The Swedish mining companies LKAB and Boliden, the equipment supplier Atlas Copco, the general contractor NCC and the specialist company Reflex joined forces in 2005 to advance the field of rock technology for the purpose of mining and underground construction. The creation of the company Rock Tech Centre is part of the strategy developed by the Swedish mining industry to strengthen co-operation with industry, academia and society. This paper outlines the current R&D strategies developed for the industry in general, discusses what focus areas are selected and provides some details on the current RTC project portfolio, especially faster and better drifting.

"This paper investigates the froth function in flotation and the associated upgrading process. Flotation literature has revealed that one of the main functions of the froth phase is the cleaning of bubble-particle aggregates by rejection of entrained material. The cleaning and transport processes across the froth phase exert straining forces on these aggregates on their way up to the froth surface. These forces will impact on the recovery of bubble-particle aggregates.The grade at the top of the froth (TOF) is a parameter related to the quality of particles collected by bubbles in the pulp zone (true flotation). It has recently been demonstrated that TOF corresponds to the maximum practically attainable grade described by the recovery-grade (or enrichment ratio) curve. TOF lumps all the processes experienced by the bubble-particle aggregates before reaching the launder concentrate. This paper describes a methodology for quantifying flotation performance by means of the top of the froth sample - a touch of froth.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation may be the most important mineral processing technique, but its theory is complex and is not completely understood even though many aspects have been studied and reviewed (Teague, 1998; Wills, 1992).Two distinct particulate systems prevail in the flotation process: a pulp phase and a froth phase (Figure 1). The pulp zone had been studied extensively; however, it is only recently that techniques to measure the froth zone performance have been developed (Contini et al., 1988; Falutsu and Dobby, 1992; Feteris et al., 1987; Seaman, 2002; Vera et al., 1999b).Flotation involves a number of mass transfer processes, occurring in the pulp phase and the froth phase. The formation of the froth and its subsequent removal are considered to be two important steps of the process. Phenomena that occur in the froth phase are known to affect flotation performance significantly (Cutting et al., 1981).Because the froth has a high free surface energy (as a result of the extensive interfacial surface between liquid and air), it appears thermodynamically unstable. The foaming is a dynamic balance, as new bubbles are added continuously from the pulp, while others disappear from the top. Under steady-state conditions, the volumes of added and subtracted air are equal (Booth, 1953)."

"Fine mineral particles are difficult to process by flotation because of their low collision efficiencies with air bubbles. Decreasing air bubble size and increasing mineral particle size through flocculation are the most common approaches to improve flotation efficiencies. Herein we demonstrate that nanoparticle flotation collectors can be engineered to selectively induce fine mineral particle aggregation and promote flotation.Flotation tests of clean fine pentlandite (Pn) and Clarabelle Mill (CBM) rock tails and pyrrhotite (Po) tails that contained significant amount of fine pentlandite have confirmed that the nanoparticles can serve as both collectors and selective flocculants for fine pentlandite. In the case of clean fine Pn, the nanoparticle collectors virtually can float almost all Pn fines. Scoping tests on CBM tails have shown significant improvement in nickel recovery. Addition of nanoparticles as a flotation aid can recover 20% of the nickel contained in the rock tails and 40% of the Pn contained in the Po tails compared to current mill operations giving 0% nickel recovery from rock tails and no Pn selectivity from Po tails. Ongoing work includes attempts to identify optimal strategies for employing nanoparticles in fines flotation.IntroductionFine particle flotation is an industry-wide challenge in mineral processing. Fine mineral particles are difficult to process by flotation because fine particles have low mass and thus low momentum, which results in their low collision efficiency with air bubbles (Dai, Fornasiero, & Ralston, 1999). In addition, fine particles have not only high specific surface area but also more active surface area, which causes high reagent consumption. For base metal sulphide minerals, particle size between 10 µm and 70 µm is a typical range where high flotation recoveries can be achieved with conventional flotation chemistry and acceptable cell residence times. For pentlandite, the flotation recoveries decrease sharply when the particle size is below 10 µm and hydraulic entrainment is the dominant mechanism, giving recoveries proportional to water recovery and no Pn enrichment. "Orway Mineral Consultants Ltd (OMC) as a consultancy has specialized in comminution circuit design for over 30 years. The OMC Power Model is OMC’s in-house software for specific grinding energy power-based circuit calculations. The model uses ore hardness parameters from testwork, circuit configuration, equipment geometry and operating conditions as inputs. The model combines proprietary and published power models to predict the total specific energy and the specific energy for each of the components of the comminution circuit. This makes the software a valuable tool for the design and validation of JKSimMet modelling or actual plant performance. Proprietary calculations have been developed and reconciled with over 100 plant benchmark projects encompassing a variety of comminution circuit configurations.This paper describes the OMC approach for determining power requirements for the design of grinding circuits. The accuracy of the OMC Power Model software is confirmed through plant survey benchmark performance and comparisons are made with other power modelling techniques. Practical examples are presented, showing applications for single stage SAG (SS-SAG), SAB and SABC circuit configurations.IntroductionConventional low throughput grinding options, consisting of multi-stage crushing followed by rod and ball mills, have almost become obsolete in the move to higher milling rates required to process lower metal grades. Grinding circuits with fully autogenous (AG) or semi-autogenous (SAG) mills, often combined with ball mills are now the standard to meet the high capacity requirement for processing ores with lower metal grades. Simulation software and power-based equation methodologies have been established for designing AG/SAG based grinding circuits and predicting their energy requirements.Presently, power-based equations remain the principal method for designers to size mills and estimate the power requirement for comminution circuits. The technique is simple and it relies on the design to specify a feed and product size plus a hardness index to produce a specific energy value (kWh/t). The desired throughput of the mill is multiplied by the specific energy to give the mill power requirement, which is used in turn to size a mill for dimensions, internal geometry and loading conditions to match the power draw."

The mechanization of platinum group metal (PGM) underground reef mining in South Africa has posed a challenge to mining engineers for several decades. This is primarily due to the shallow dip angles and narrow thickness (<1.1m) of the tabular orebodies mined, and the issues faced in developing reliable drilling, bolting and loading machines suitable for such hard-rock mining applications. Presently, mining is typically conducted using hand drills and scraper shovels. These methods, however, are intensive in terms of manual labor, and limited in terms of productivity, and improved methods are desired. This paper will review the technical features of a 4 tonne, low-profile, LHD for narrow-reef PGM mining, developed by EJC Loaders Division.

"The Victor Diamond Mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario and was completed approximately 9 months ahead of schedule.The Victor Mine process plant flowsheet was designed to produce a 95 - 98% by weight diamond concentrate. Main processing steps include 3 stages of comminution, dense medium separation and proprietary x-ray technology for final recovery. Reagent consumption for this process is limited to flocculant, for thickening of fine processed kimberlite, and FeSi for the dense medium separation.The commissioning phase of the Victor Project was executed over a period of 6 months and commenced prior to substantial completion of construction. The approach used was to focus on and complete commissioning of the higher risk dense medium separation and recovery systems prior to construction completion of up stream systems.INTRODUCTIONThe development of the Victor Diamond Mine took place over a period of approximately 5 years and had a capital cost of CAD997 million. It was a greenfields project in an undeveloped region of northern Ontario, only accessible by winter road. Figure 1, below, displays the location of the project within Ontario.The main stages of the project included feasibility, environmental permitting, engineering, construction, and commissioning. At the onset of the engineering phase, the mine was scheduled to enter production in October 2008. Through a team effort between AMEC and DeBeers Canada, the schedule was advanced by 6 months towards the goal of project completion in April 2008. Production status was attained in January 2008, approximately 9 months ahead of the original schedule. This paper focuses on the commissioning aspects of the project and includes a less detailed discussion of the engineering stage."

"With energy costs increasing and ore grades diminishing, the role of pre-concentration in hard rock mining operations has been gaining greater interest. To maximize energy conservation, the pre-concentration process should be conducted at as coarse a crush size as possible while minimizing losses of pay metals. Dense medium separation (DMS) is a robust process that can be conducted at particle sizes as coarse as 300 mm and as fine as 500 µm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the value minerals. The DMS process involves three steps: feed preparation, dense medium separation, and ferrous-based media recovery. This paper discusses each of these processing steps, but focus will be given to the dense medium separation stage. Various types of DMS equipment are reviewed. Pilot plant campaign case studies conducted at the SGS Lakefield site are presented, which have included a variety of mineral systems such as spodumene, sulphide-bearing gold ores, and complex sulphide ores. These case studies demonstrate that for amenable ores, mass rejection of 20-60% is possible while maintaining recoveries of greater than 90% in most cases.IntroductionPre-concentration is a process of rejecting mass of gangue while ensuring recovery of valuable minerals prior to more intensive, downstream processing. Pre-concentration has been practiced in industry for many years, and is gaining greater interest as the industry copes with processing lower grade, more difficult ores, typically requiring finer grind sizes and higher energy costs."

"Stillwater Mining commenced mining operations at Nye, Montana in 1987 for the recovery of platinum and palladium. Exploration identified that the J-M Reef extended for 43 km. In 1998 Stillwater Mining made the decision to develop the East Boulder mine complex, located approximately 13 miles from the Stillwater mine complex at Nye, to increase production. This paper describes the design, construction, and start-up of the East Boulder process plant.INTRODUCTIONStillwater Mining Company have been producing Platinum and Palladium from their Nye, Montana operations since 1987. The mine production from Nye had been increased in stages with mine production being delivered through several portals and one vertical shaft.The deposit is narrow veined which prevents the application of bulk mining methods and thus limits the production capabilities.In order to increase the production of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) Stillwater made the decision to access the ore from the J-M Reef from the East Boulder site. The East Boulder mine site is located about 21 km (13 miles) from Nye, however as shown in Figure 1, the travel distance is closer to 188 km (114 miles). Distance, on strike, and space availability at Nye precluded the expansion of the Nye concentrator to handle the increased mining rate and supported the decision to install a new concentrator at East Boulder."

"Minera Penmont’s La Herradura is a joint venture between Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. and Newmont Mining Corporation. The mine is located in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. La Herradura consists of an open pit mine with a two-stage crushing plant and heap leaching facility. Gold is recovered from the pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process; production began in July 1998. La Herradura produces about 130 000 oz gold per year and its treatment capacity is approximately 22 000 t/d. Ore mineralization occurs in a shear zone with quartz and native gold. Gold distribution is quite heterogeneous due to coarse visible gold, which in some cases ranges from 100 to 600 microns.Sampling and assaying protocols were established during exploration and prior to start-up of operations, based on nomographs developed from early heterogeneity tests. However, as the coarse gold problem became noticeable, it was necessary to develop new sampling protocols to have an acceptable relative standard deviation to control the fundamental error within ± 15%.An experimental program was developed and conducted on a selected ore block consisting of 195 blastholes; regular ore grade control procedures were applied to both sets of data to evaluate the difference in results between the protocol established prior to start-up of operations (existing) and the new protocol (leaching). In the existing protocol, sub-sampling is done through riffle splitters, and coning and quartering. Fire assaying was used to estimate the gold content on a 50 g sample. In the leaching protocol, a 12 000 g sample of bottle-rolled cyanide was leached, and the leach residue was assayed on a 50 g sample using fire assaying, and a weighted average total gold content was calculated. Currently, a new alternative method is being evaluated, where sub-sampling is done using rotary splitters, and fire assay on a 50 g sample; in this rotary sampling protocol and for comparison purposes, gold assays were also repeated using the leaching protocol.Test results were compared in three groups: < 0.3 g/t (below cut-off), 0.3 to 0.8 g/t, and >0.8 g/t. Overall, results show that the protocol established prior to start-up of operations underestimates the gold assays. Detailed technical results, alternative options, and their implications are discussed in the paper."

"Rio Tinto Fer et Titane processes the ore extracted from the Lac Tio orebody to concentrate the hemo-ilmenite (FeO.TiO2-Fe2O3) mineral that is subsequently smelted to produce pig iron and titanium oxide slag. The ore is crushed, heat treated (roasted) and concentrated using dry magnetic separators. This paper describes a model to predict the magnetic susceptibility of the roasted ore and its behaviour in the magnetic separation plant. The model uses a classification of the ore as a function of the size and magnetic susceptibility of the particles. A subsequent division into mineral species allows the simulation of the magnetic separation process. The model is used to assess various operating options when process disturbances occur.INTRODUCTIONOre processing operations consist of ore size reduction followed by the recovery of valuable species in a concentrate that is subsequently sold for its minerals or metal content. The concentration processes are based on the physical and/or chemical properties of the minerals contained in the ore. Flotation is typically used to recover minerals of base metals such as copper, zinc, lead or nickel. Iron ore and other dense minerals are typically concentrated by gravity separation processes. Magnetic separation uses the magnetic properties of the minerals to concentrate magnetite and other minerals, to clean coal concentrate and to recycle ferrosilicon for dense separation processes (Brophy, 1985).Magnetic separators can be divided into low and high intensity separators and high gradient magnetic separators (Gillet, 2008). Most of the low gradient magnetic separators are built as rotary drums that are operated in wet or dry conditions. Dry magnetic drum separators are used by Rio Tinto Fer et Titane in Sorel-Tracy, Canada to concentrate hemo-ilmenite from the ore extracted at the Lac Tio Lake mine near Havre St-Pierre, Canada. The analysis of production data suggests that process improvement could be achieved by identifying key variables for the control of the magnetic separation circuit and/or by modification to the circuit flowsheet. The use of a process model was considered to be an effective approach to conduct a preliminary analysis of the circuit with a view toward process optimization. However, the literature contains few detailed studies dealing with the modelling of magnetic separation processes."

"Highland Valley Copper is a conventional truck-shovel mining and flotation concentrator operation located 75 km southwest of Kamloops, British Columbia (Fig. 1).The ore is situated within a porphyry copper deposit and is mined at a rate of 135,000 mt/day from two separate open pits. The nearby mill produces concentrates containing 375 million pounds of copper and 5 million pounds of molybdenum metal yearly. In the Valley pit, head grades are roughly 0.40% Cu at a 0.23% Cu equivalent cut-off. The Valley pit strip ratio currently sits at 0.55:1 with waste quantities made up of separate rock and unconsolidated overburden units. From the mill, concentrates are trucked to nearby Ashcroft and then hauled by rail to ocean port facilities in Vancouver. The mine employs 950 people and is planned to operate until 2009. The operation is a partnership between Teck Cominco (63.9%), BHP Billiton (33.6%), and others (2.5%). Management is shared by the two principal owners and directed by a management committee."

"This paper studies the progress made by hydraulic shovel manufacturers over the last few years, particularly in the areas of productivity increase and operating cost reductions.Five years ago, it was widely considered that the unit production cost for a hydraulic shovel in a mining application was double that of a cable shovel in the same application. The hydraulic machine manufacturers have taken up this challenge, and modern improvements in design, coupled with changes in maintenance techniques, have narrowed the gap to the point where it is valid to ask the question ""will the cable shovel exist in ten years&apos; time?"".Historical BackgroundThe history of the cable shovel goes back to the early 19th century and the industrial revolution. Early machines were steam-powered and ran on rails.The ""power shovel"" and the ""dragline"" were the only mechanical means of mass excavation until the early 1950s. Rail-mounted units gave way to crawlers, which increased flexibility considerably. Some shovels were redesigned as backhoes, and some became extremely large when designed as stripping shovels primarily used in North American coal mines.In the early 1950s growth in hydraulic technology spawned the introduction of the hydraulic excavator, which soon began to replace the smaller cable shovels and backhoes used in the construction industry. They were completely self-contained with either a gasoline or diesel engine and, being much lighter, were more readily transportable.As the excavators grew in size from its early models of 0.5 m3 or less, many of the cable shovel models were discontinued. This was not surprising for several reasons, but the most obvious is that both were often made by the same manufacturer."

"The processing behaviours of ores such as their liberation characteristics in comminution and their response in separation processes are affected by their mineralogical characteristics. Key ore characteristics which are relevant to processing, such as mineral proportions, mineral grain size, grain shape and mineral associations are routinely measured at the micro-scale in polished section using optical microscopes and SEM-based automated mineralogy systems. The application of X-ray micro-tomography to mineral processing provides the means to quantify these important micro-textural characteristics in three dimensions, removing the stereological issues encountered when measuring volumetric information in two-dimensional polished sections. In this paper we present several examples of ore textures to illustrate where X-ray micro-tomography can be applied successfully to obtain quantitative measures of ore characteristics which are useful in a variety of process modelling applications.INTRODUCTION X-ray tomography has been used as a tool in medicine for some years and is being applied in a wider range of fields including geology, palaeontology and mineralogy. In this paper we present some applications of X-ray tomography in mineral processing applications being developed at JKMRC. The availability of SEM-based automated mineralogy systems such as MLA and QEMSCAN has seen the increased use of quantitative mineralogical data measured in two dimensions in the design, operation and simulation of mineral processing plants. When the ore is amenable to measurement by X-ray tomography this technique can provide quantitative data for characteristics such as mineral grain size, shape, mineral associations and liberation in three-dimensions. The advantage of measuring these characteristics in three-dimensions is that the stereological issues which bias measurements made on polished sections are removed. X-ray tomography also quantifies the location of mineral grains relative to one another in space - a useful descriptor of ore texture. Like many measurement techniques X-ray tomography has advantages and disadvantages when compared to other techniques. One limitation is that the ability of the X-ray tomography system to discriminate between minerals is a function of the X-ray attenuation of those minerals. While the X-ray attenuation of many common minerals is sufficiently different for X-ray tomography to distinguish between them, there are some where the overlap in X-ray attenuation makes discrimination on the basis of this characteristic alone impossible. An example of this would be chalcopyrite and magnetite. However where the ore mineralogy is suitable to apply X-ray tomography, the technique provides some exciting opportunities to explore the relationship between texture and ore processability."

"Sonar array-based non-invasive flow measurement technology is becoming an accepted and many times a preferred method of measuring challenging single and multi-phase flows in the mineral processing industry. This fundamental sensor and measurement technology has been extended to two developments that provide new measurement capabilities useful for monitoring and managing slurry flows and pipes.The first development is the non-invasive measurement of real-time velocity profile of slurry flow in horizontal pipes. Multiple non-invasive passive sensors measure localized velocities and are combined to provide a velocity profile measurement. This information can be used to determine the approach and onset of solid deposition on the bottom of the pipe. Having this information in real time can enable operation at lower velocities and/or higher solids concentration while avoiding solids deposition or plugging and its associated operational costs.The second development is the non-invasive measurement of pipe wear on slurry lines. Presently, such measurements are made by hand-held portable ultrasonic thickness gages. The numerous shortfalls associated with the manual method are overcome with a set of permanently or semi-permanently installed transducers clamped onto the outside of the pipe. This ring of sensors contains a series of conformable ultrasonic transducers spaced around the circumference, which are used to measure the thickness of the pipe under their respective locations. Compared to manual methods, this system and approach results in better repeatability and accuracy. It also decreases inspection labor costs and pipe access requirements. The minimal accuracy variations in the presence of varying environmental temperatures will be shown. Trending of pipe wall thicknesses in high wear pipelines will be illustrated. The benefits of significantly improved pipe wear monitoring in hydrotransport lines with abrasive solids, and associated improvement in the ability to insure safe operation and avoidance of costly environmental damage due to leaks caused by pipe wear will be discussed."

"EPD (Electric Pulse disaggregation) and HS (hydroseparation) are exceptional technologies for research, concentration, evaluation, and mineral extraction of specific minerals such as precious metals (Au, Ag, PGM), kimberlites (extraction and concentration of indicator minerals), zircons and baddeleyite (recovery of objects for geochronology), and even gemstones (method of evaluation and production of the 100% gemstone concentrate of ideal crystals) etc. EPD is used for recovery of pristine undamaged crystals of diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire etc, including large crystals. It was tested on various hard ores and was especially successful for recovery of “soft” minerals from “hard” matrix. EPD products are very convenient for HS processing, resulting in representative concentrates of all heavy minerals including the finest particles (5-10 µm). The combined EPD and HS method enables high sensitivity (20 ppb) for evaluation of precious metal ores providing objective information about original grain size, associations, and recovery using a very small amount of sample (1-3 kg). Latest developments of EPD and HS techniques at CNT Mineral Consulting Inc. include the HS-21 hydroseparator (50 kg/hr) and the Spark-21 EPD (5 t/hr), which enables use of both techniques for prospecting and mineral processing of industrial size samples of certain ores.INTRODUCTIONThe main task for mineral processors is to find a reliable technology for testing of mining feasibility and the efficiency of mineral extraction procedures. Among various mineral processing approaches of extraction and concentration there are two alternative cost-effective methods that can be described as the most environmentally benign and complementary: electric-pulse disaggregation and hydroseparation. These techniques were tested on many different ore types and process products with great success providing a precise and comprehensive mineralogical determination of different accessory precious metal and other useful minerals constituent in rocks, ores, and tailings.This article describes several examples of EPD and HS use: native gold from the Kostomuksha deposit (Karelia, Russia), a Ag-Au deposit in South America, zircons from ancient ultramafic igneous rocks of SW Greenland, bauxites of West Australia, PGM from the Driekop dunite pipe and gemstones (ruby, sapphire, emerald and demantoid) from different deposits."

"The sulphide copper deposits from the Carajás area (North region of Brazil) were generated by the percolation of hydrothermal fluids in volcanic and granitic rock and are denominated as IOCG deposits (iron oxide copper-gold deposits). During these hydrothermal events a wide variety of gangue minerals such as amphiboles, biotite and fluorite were formed. These gangue minerals are enriched in fluorine and chlorine which are deleterious elements in the copper concentrate. Chalcopyrite and bornite are the main copper-bearing minerals and they can occur in veins, in brecchia or disseminated in gangue.The study, which included bench scale flotation tests and minipilot plant tests was aimed at improving the fluorine rejection in the flotation process during the flowsheet design for one of these Carajás sulphide copper deposit. All of the study was supported by quantitative mineralogical techniques such as QEMSCAN and the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM).This paper describes and discusses the results obtained in the metallurgical tests and emphasizes the importance of the quantitative mineralogical characterization during the process conditions optimization and flowsheet design.INTRODUCTIONIron oxide copper-gold (IOCG) deposits encompass a wide spectrum of sulphide-deficient low-Ti magnetite and/or hematite ore bodies of hydrothermal origin and normally have important copper sulphide reserves. In the Carajás mineral province, located at the southeast part of the Amazon Craton in Pará State (Brazil), there is a variety of world-class (>200 million tonnes) Fe-oxide Cu-Au deposits (e.g. Salobo, Cristalino and Sossego), whose genesis has been assigned to hydrothermal fluid percolation in volcanic and granitic rocks. Figure 1 displays the location of the Carajás area.The hydrothermal thermal fluid composition was extremely variable. It may have contained gases, salts (brine) and metals. The metals were carried as various complexes and it is thought to have involved sulphur, chlorine and fluorine containing species. This resulted in some minerals formed during the hydrothermal alteration having high fluorine and chlorine contents. These elements result in smelter penalties in a copper concentrate because they cause the smelter off-gases to be more corrosive."

"Acid mine drainage (AMD), the very acidic and heavy metal-contaminated leachate generated when pyrite-bearing rocks are exposed to surface oxidizing conditions, is a serious environmental problem encountered after the closure of mines and mineral processing operations. In this study, we investigated the effects of soluble phases and metallic oxides, which are commonly found in strongly weathered pyritic wastes, on pyrite oxidation. Strongly weathered pyrite containing melanterite (FeSO4·7H2O) as the main soluble phase was obtained from Furikusa mine, Japan. The sample was washed using two methods to vary the relative amounts of melanterite in the sample. The effect of metallic oxides on pyrite oxidation was evaluated using ultrapure hematite suspensions. Our results showed that under acidic conditions, the effect of soluble salts on the oxidation of pyrite was stronger than hematite. More thorough washing of the sample resulted in the formation of an arsenic-bearing iron-oxyhydroxysulfate coating that minimized pyrite dissolution. This oxidized layer became relatively thicker and mechanically stronger when hematite was introduced after the more thorough removal of soluble salts. Characterization of this “coating” coupled with geochemical modeling suggest that it is most probably composed of two materials: schwertmannite and scorodite. Based on these results, a new approach to suppress pyrite oxidation by directly using iron-oxyhydroxysulfate as coating material is introduced.INTRODUCTION Acid mine drainage (AMD), the very acidic and heavy metals-contaminated leachate produced in closed/abandoned mine sites (Evangelou, 1995), mineral processing and coal cleaning tailings (Evangelou, 1995), and tunnel construction waste rocks (Tabelin and Igarashi, 2009, Tabelin et al., 2012), is one of the oldest and probably the most serious environmental problem of anthropogenic origin. "The Sarcheshmeh mine processes 40,000 t/d of ore grading 0.9% Cu and 0.035% Mo. Grinding is effected in single stage ball mills using 80 mm forged steel balls, with an average consumption of 850 g/t. One of its 5 m diameter, 8 m length ball mills was emptied to measure the ball size distribution. The broken balls were first separated from the total charge, and the remaining balls classified into five size intervals of +7O mm, -70 +60 mm, -60+50 mm, -50+40 mm, -40 mm.The charge was composed of 280,534 balls (excluding broken balls) with a total mass of 305,180 kg. It was found that 4.0 % of the balls were broken; the size distribution of the charge was also markedly different from the desired one, in particular for the small-sized balls. For instance, 9% of the balls were expected to measure 2.54 to 3.18 cm in diameter, but none was found. On the other hand, the amount of top size balls was 30% higher than expected. The radial hardness of balls, which was determined by cutting the balls in halves, showed that the hardness sharply drops when the balls become smaller than 65 mm. The unexpected ball size distribution was attributed to the rapid change in the balls radial hardness. Based on the measured ball size distribution, a new ball make-up charge which uses 80% of 80 mm and 20% of 60 mm balls instead of 100% of 80 mm was proposed and implemented. The effect of the new ball make-up procedure in terms of ball consumption and grinding efficiency is being investigated."

"Although diamond mining is a relative newcomer to the Canadian mining industry, with the first diamond mine coming on stream in 1998, Canada is already a significant producer of high quality diamonds. This paper will review diamond production trends and highlight some of the projects currently under development, which have the potential to enhance Canada’s role as a significant diamond producer.Diamond recovery plants generally incorporate well-established mineral processing and recovery techniques, with issues such as product security, cut-off sizes, and diamond preservation becoming important considerations when developing process flowsheets. A diamond processing plant must achieve three key objectives, namely:• Liberation of the diamonds from the host rock;• Separation of the heavy minerals, which include the diamonds, from the host rock;• Recovery of the diamonds from the heavy mineral concentrates.Processing technologies and equipment commonly utilized in diamond processing plants will be reviewed and some of the significant issues associated with each option briefly discussed.Typical process flowsheets will be presented.Finally, an overview of De Beers’ Victor diamond project, located in northern Ontario, will be provided. This potentially significant diamond producer is currently at a pre-feasibility stage of development.DIAMONDS IN CANADAWorld Diamond ProductionCommercial diamond mining commenced in earnest with the discovery of the Kimberley diamondfields in South Africa in the late 1800s, and this resulted in a dramatic increase in the supply of diamonds. As can be seen from figure 1, world diamond production, mainly from South Africa, Angola, Congo, and Namibia, remained relatively constant through the early 1900s until the development of the large Russian kimberlite pipes in the 1950s. Production increased again in the 1960s and 70s with the development of the Botswana mines, but the most significant increase in global production came from the Argyle mine in Australia, which came on stream in 1983 and produced a peak of almost 43 million carats in 1994, representing approximately 40% of the world market. Production from Argyle has since fallen-off as grades have declined and the strip ratio has increased with the deepening of the open pit."

"Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10,000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in threes individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream x-ray analysis. Recently this system was further automated by adding computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery 0.8%, zinc recovery 1.6%, and reduced reagent costs by 12%. Although not anticipated, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved modestly as well.INTRODUCTIONSEcstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, one of the world's major base metal producers, near the old gold mining centre of Timmins, Ontario. Discovered in 1964, the property was brought into production in November, 1966. Originally designed for 9,000 tons per day, the operation now treats 10,000 tons per day of two different ore types mined from a single open pit. In the near future, open pit ore will be supplemented by ore from an underground operation now being readied for productionAt the Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. The whole plant is highly automated and control is coordinated from a central control room. The treatment process follows conventional practices although fine grinding is required for optimum flotation recoveries. Normally, two circuits treat copper-zinc ore at a combined rate of 6,500 tons per day while the third circuit treats 3,500 tons per day of silver-lead-zinc ore. Special production averages 2,400 tons per day."
