A novel separation process for detoxifying cadmium-containing residues arising from zinc hydrometallurgical processes has been developed. An initial investigation indicated that a high concentration of zinc in the sulfate solution can be effectively separated from cadmium by solvent extraction with P204 (di(2-ethylhexly)phosphoric acid, D2EHPA). The mixture of sulfuric acid and ammonium citrate ((NH4)3C6H5O7) is thus used to extract metals from the residue at room temperature. Copper in the leachate is recovered by solvent extraction (SX) with LIX 973. Cobalt in the raffinate from the copper SX process is recovered by precipitation with a-nitroso-ß-naphthol. The results show that more than 50% of the copper and virtually all the zinc, cadmium and cobalt in the residue can be leached under the experimental conditions used here. Virtually all dissolved copper and cobalt can be recovered in the subsequent solvent extraction and precipitation processes. The presence of (NH4)3C6H5O7 could significantly facilitate the extraction of zinc by D2EHPA in the subsequent separation of zinc and cadmium. More than 97% of the dissolved zinc can be recovered through a two-stage counter current solvent extraction process. After separating copper, cobalt and zinc, cadmium can easily be recovered from the solution either by cementation with zinc powder or by electrowinning, while the purified solution can be recycled back to the leaching process.

"The Canadian mining industry faces the prospects of a severe shortage of graduate mining engineers over the next decade. This arises from three factors: first, a growth in industrial activity; second, the average age of company engineering and management staff; and third, the reduced number of students in engineering faculties around the world. This paper aims to identify the critical factors underlying the trend of inadequate recruitment into higher education for mining and to examine means of alleviating the problem.This paper is based upon surveys of potential and current students and graduate mining engineers from four mining schools. "This paper will initially outline the specific types of copper castings used in blast furnace iron production. Tuyeres, tuyere coolers and stack cooling plates will be discussed in some depth, with particular reference to their dimensional configuration and purpose.Following this, the failure of such cooling members will be discussed, with special focus on tuyeres. Tuyeres are the most common casting which often requires replacement. Reasons for failure and its effect on operations will also be included.The latter sections of the paper will deal with the strict specifications demanded by ironmakers regarding copper castings. The justification for such rigid demands will be explained through the material presented earlier in the paper.IntroductionThe modern 5000-tpd blast furnace, worth millions, is a large capital investment to be sitting idle. Consequently, ironmakers strive to minimize the loss in iron production and revenue from furnace downtime. Two major causes of downtime are furnace relines and shutdowns to replace damaged tuyeresor tuyere coolers. Copper ancillaries are important items in the production of iron. They are consumable items, therefore they contribute to the campaign life or to the downtime in blast furnace production.Several combinations of lining and cooling systems have been used with varying degrees of success. Blast furnace refractories have evolved from ceramic to carbonaceous linings. The Russians and Japanese have successfully introduced stave-cooled furnaces that may have several forms, such as evaporative cooling. Stelco has two furnaces which use the Russian-designed cast iron system. However, this paper will be confined to the use of copper cast cooling members in a conventional internally cooled furnace.Figure 1 is a schematic cross section of the E blast furnace. The three major sections of a blast furnace-the stack, bosh and hearth-are identified. Further, the locations of the various copper members are indicated. This furnace produces an average of 5300 tons of hot metal per day."

A numerical modelling approach was developed to explicitly simulate geomechanical characteristics of intact rock: mineralogy, grain size and fabric. The approach involved creating a representative constitutive model for each of three common rock-forming minerals: mica, quartz and feldspar. The constitutive models developed are valid within the low confinement realm of excavation boundaries, where tensile fracture processes dominate. The mineral types were assigned to numerical elements, which were associated with each other through an algorithm created in a finite difference model, FLAC 2D (Itasca 2007a), to simulate real crystal geometries and orientations. The numerical models were used in a parametric investigation of the geomechanical characteristics and compared with published observations of the rock yielding process in laboratory testing. This approach has allowed the explicit grain-scale investigation of the impact of geomechanical characteristics on rock yielding at low confinement, leading to an improved mechanistic understanding of excavation-scale rock yielding processes at excavation boundaries.

"The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. La Diabase de Nipissing, mise en place vers 2219 Ma et qui constitue un réseau de sills et de dykes d’importance régionale, est présente dans l’ensemble de l’échancrure et constitue la roche-hôte principale des systèmes de veines aurifères-polymétalliques de la propriété Merico-Ethel, près de la bordure nord-est de l’Échancrure de Cobalt. Ces veines à minéralisation aurifère et polymétallique constituent un système de veines de calcite-quartz sécantes d’orientation principalement est-ouest et à pendage fort qui se sont formées peu de temps après la cristallisation de la Diabase de Nipissing (à ~15 Ma près, d’après les âges Pb-Pb). Au printemps 2011, la Corporation minière Osisko met en production le gisement Canadian Malartic, qui devient la plus importante mine d?or à ciel ouvert au Canada. Pour lui faire place, elle a déménagé un quartier de 205 maisons et construit 6 nouveaux bâtiments institutionnels. Les démarches ont commencé en 2006. La compagnie a d?abord établi l?emplacement du nouveau quartier résidentiel, en collaboration avec la Ville de Malartic, puis fait la conception de ce quartier de manière à refléter au mieux les caractéristiques du quartier à déménager. Elle a ensuite effectué une opération d?assignation consistant à proposer à chaque propriétaire intéressé un lot dans le nouveau quartier. Au total, 140 résidences ont été déménagées en 2008 et 2009 et 65 été rachetées par la compagnie, le tout par des ententes de gré à gré sauf pour un seul cas. La réussite d?une opération d?une telle importance sociale n?a été possible que parce que la compagnie s?est assurée d?un soutien massif de la population et des autorités pendant tout le processus. Cette expérience peut être fort utile pour les nombreux projets miniers dont l?insertion dans la communauté est un enjeu important.

The Japanese government enforced the "Small Domestic Appliances (SDAs) Recycling Law" in 2013. The law targets metals such as Ta, Nd, Dy, Co, and W to be recycled. Considerable amounts of these minor rare metals are mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs) of the SDAs and/or e-scrap (electric and electronic scraps). Although precious metals and copper can be recovered from the e-scrap in non-ferrous metals smelters, most of the minor rare metals report to the slag in these smelters in non-recoverable forms. These metals are often used in particular types of devices, and therefore it is possible to concentrate them by separating such devices before feeding to the smelters. In previous work we developed technology for "Device Separation" to concentrate several minor rare metals, but some problems remained, such as how to remove the PCBs from e-scrap bodies, and how to detach devices from PCBs after their removal from escrap bodies. This paper proposes a two-stage crushing process in which, firstly, PCBs are removed from the e-scrap body with various crushers, and secondly, devices are detached from the PCBs involving the application of elevated temperatures. It was found that in the first stage, crushers with physically flexible rotating media such as chains, which provide high collision probability with the sample and consume relatively low energy, can quite effectively separate the PCBs from the e-scrap bodies non-destructively. In the second stage, heating was found to be remarkably effective in helping to detach mounted devices from PCBs, also non-destructively. This paper will also discuss the detailed mechanism of the heating effect on the detachment of devices from PCBs.

"This paper describes a method of deciding on various design parameters for a sublevel caving layout. Layout design curves are obtained from the output of a computer optimization program. The program uses mathematical relationships derived from the theory of gravity flow of material to optimize the large number of interdependent design variables which are involved.IntroductionIn the design of an efficient sublevel caving mining system, a large number of interrelated variables need to be considered. Although many papers discuss individual variables, very little exists in the literature to show how these variables interact to achieve optimum results. This can lead to trial and error in sublevel caving design, which can prove costly, particularly because sublevel caving is a mining method which requires integration with sublevels above and below. With no pillars being left, experimental stopes cannot be isolated for study. Unfortunately, the complexity of layout design and the costs associated with trial and error have caused many planning engineers to choose more tried and tested mining methods.Sublevel caving works best to extract low-value ore surrounded by incompetent rock. All phases of the mining method can be highly mechanized, allowing low operating costs and high production rates. Good safety records are achieved, as workers are always in &apos;good&apos; ground and the method is regular, making it comparable to an industrial process."

"Rare earth resources usually contain minor amounts of radioactive elements. The most widely recognised sources of radioactivity are associated with thorium and uranium. However, also present in the resources are isotopes of rare earth elements (REE) that are themselves radioactive, including lanthanum (La-138), lutetium (Lu-176) and samarium (Sm-147). These radioisotopes, as well as remnants of the natural thorium (Th-232) and uranium (U-238, U-235) decay series, can contribute to significant levels of radioactivity in mixed REE concentrates and in separated products. Levels such as these can present challenges for transport, transboundary movement, product storage, workers’ health and safety, as well as waste management issues at the facilities that separate out the individual REE’s. These are discussed in this paper. A particularly challenging radioactive isotope is Ac-227 (a decay product in the U-235 decay series). Actinium behaves chemically similar to lanthanides and hence normally concentrates with REE multi-element composites. Reliable analysis of Ac-227 is not widely available and the methodology required to deal with this challenge is briefly described. A principle reason for minimization of radioactive content throughout REE processing is restrictive specifications by concentrate purchasers in order to reduce waste management challenges. Approaches to the minimization of radioisotope content in REE concentrates and separated products are outlined in this paper."

"Murrin Murrin Operations has not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues many of which are the result of design decisions have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are:1. the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency;2. the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids;3. the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and4. the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system.In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system through mechanical modification as follows:•, CCD1 has a modified rake mechanism that now allows central vertical lift of 600 mm;•, CCD1 has forced dilution using the Outokumpu Turbodil® technology and replacing the E-Duc® technology of Eimco;The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system are discussed in this paper. The installation was justified on improved operational robustness and an increase in the in the underflow density of 1 per cent (per cent w/w). At approximately the same time process modifications in the solution neutralisation circuit were implemented and these changes altered the rheology of the slurry reporting to CCD1. Since the modifications to CCD1 and the solution neutralisation circuit, the CCD circuit has averaged a 2 per cent improvement in the circuit underflow density.The CCD1 modification was completed on time and mechanically has performed well. From a risk point of view, the central rake-lift and Turbodil®dilution system add a degree of freedom and robustness to CCD1 operation that has extended the range of operational confidence. In this respect, the modification has been a success and is complementary solution neutralisation improvements."

"As part of a larger research program, a number of MEGATEM airborne electromagnetic (EM) test flights were flown over the Gallen massive sulfide deposit in northwest Québec. A particularity of this test site is that a major part of the ore body was extracted before the MEGATEM survey. Therefore one of the purposes of this study was to verify the ability of the system to detect the remaining massive sulfides below the water in the open pit. The open pit is also surrounded by a metallic fence, and a power line is present in the vicinity. A large part of the case study involved accounting for the impact of infrastructure and acidic water on the survey, which will help in the interpretation of airborne EM responses in complex exploration situations.The Gallen deposit was also previously flown with the INPUT and GEOTEM airborne EM systems before the major exploitation period. A comparison between the results from the different survey results allows estimation of the physical properties of the Gallen deposit, which is a relatively poor conductor.A new method for removing the power line signal shows amplitudes with a smaller residual associated with the emanating fields, and more compact, cleaner responses associated with induced currents. This will make it easier to identify bedrock conductors close to power lines"

"The successful introduction of new high intensity stirred milling technologies (e.g. IsaMill, SMDetritor) to the mining industry in recent years prompted Noranda-Falconbridge to initiate a study comparing these technologies to the conventional technologies of ball milling and existing vertical stirred mills (e.g. VertiMill). The study was unique in that it utilized the same material (Brunswick Mine zinc cleaner regrind mill feed), the same sizing instrument (a Malvern laser difractometer) and sampling protocol, and media size and type (for the high intensity stirred mills). The paper compares the net energy efficiency (kWh/t) of the various technologies, their power intensity (kW/m3) and product size distribution spread (P80/P20). A key finding is that media size is critical to achieving optimal performance. As part of the performance comparison, an analysis of the four methods of power measurement was made (Prony brake, shaft torque, grinding chamber reaction torque, “no-load” correction) and followed-up with an experimental test procedure using three of these methods. The findings include divergent results for power measurements and some explanations based on the observations are proposed. The direct shaft torque and Prony brake calibration methods are shown to be the methods most suitable for stirred mills.INTRODUCTIONThe motivation for the investigation reported here was the lack of a suitable comparison within the available literature of relative grinding efficiency for the emerging crop of new industrial fine grinding technologies. Such comparisons are potentially fraught with inconsistency, from ore samples and grinding media used, to testing methodology, to size measurement techniques, to the power measurements themselves. The collaboration of the industrial suppliers (at the time MIM Technologies and Svedala, now Xstrada Technologies and Metso Minerals) and McGill University (P. Radsiszewski) were sought in order to ensure as valid a comparison as possible. The work was performed between October 2000 and November 2002, led by the mineral processing group at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. The paper is presented in two sections; Part A considers the different power measurement methods and a comparison of the results for the SMDetritor (SMD) technology, while Part B reviews the grinding performance of the 5 technologies investigated using the selected performance criteria."

Over the last four years, an international initiative, championed by Vehicle Projects LLC, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute and Natural Resources Canada, has been active in carrying out research projects to prove out the concept of applying fuelcell technology to underground mining vehicles. These have been carried out by a consortium consisting of mining companies, equipment manufacturers, technology developers, national laboratories and consultants, with the participation of Canadian and U.S. mine regulatory agencies. This clean technology, which produces only water and electricity, would allow several advantages to be obtained, in the health area (by eliminating diesel emissions and reducing noise generation), in lowering production costs (such as reducing ventilation required) and lowering green house gas emissions. This article outlines the results obtained in several key areas, such as the operation of fuelcells in underground conditions, risk issues related to underground and surface operation of hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen production and delivery systems, and the design and mining performance of the world?s first hydrogen mining vehicle, a mine production locomotive. The work to date on the fuelcell loader, designing the power plant and power transmission systems, operational requirements, and operating cost reductions, is also presented. There is also an evaluation of the overall mining applications and advantages this technology can bring to underground mining, including the facilitation of automation and tele-remote operation.

"Paste backfill has replaced cemented rock fill as one of the components to improve ground · control and mine safety at the Macassa Operation of Kinross Gold Corporation in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. It is the first operation to utilize "" flash thickening ""of very fine gold tailings to a paste consistency in the ""Paste Production and Storage Mechanism"", a joint technical development of Inco and GL&V. The tailings paste is mixed with alluvial sand to produce an engineered quality paste backfill. The development leading up to the decision to proceed with this novel technology is discussed, as well as commissioning of the backfill operation.IntroductionThe occurrence of a major rockburst on November 23, 1993 prompted a review of mining and backfill procedures at the Macassa No 3 shaft . This shaft is some 7238 ft deep and lies in a mining belt that is prone to seismic events. The recommendations were to change the mining from underhand cut and fill to mechanized long hole stopping and to look at alternatives to the rockfill backfill system in place. The Macassa cemented rock backfill operation, while producing the desired fill stiffness had drawbacks as compared to paste fill. With paste fill, placement rates are faster, more openings can be filled, it is less expensive and less prone to the occurrences of compensable incidents.Macassa mining personnel visited the Sudbury operations of Inco in 1993, where development on paste backfill was in progress. As some of the R&D was taking place with funding from the Premier's Council Technology Fund of the Ministry of Trade and Technology of the Province of Ontario , Inco personnel at that time did some feasibility and conceptual consulting on the use of paste fill for the industry. Inco had developed the use of alluvial sand paste fill, an engineered blend of alluvial sand and tailings fines and was doing development work to eliminate the ""conventional"" way of producing paste from mill tailing by thickening and filtration. This latter development work was taking place with GL&V Ontario. That work led to the filing of a joint Inca/ GL&V patent application for the PPSM, the Paste Production and Storage Mechanism with all marketing rights being held by GL&V."

"This paper reviews the Falconbridge- SMRQ’s Raglan project in northern Quebec and the process that was used in developing its current long-term mine plan. Challenges were many and not only limited to the longevity of the project, numerous ore deposits (both underground and open pit), and a 40 km property strike length. As a result of its remote northern location, other factors such as progressive reclamation, leachable mine waste, water treatment, and waste management were also part of the plan. A combination of modern planning tools were used to formulate the plan including DataMine, Mine 2-4D, AutoMod Simulation, and an Excel-based financial spreadsheet to bring the total plan together. The focus of the paper is to show the complexity of modern mine planning and associated economic modelling of mine processes. IntroductionThe Raglan project is located 1660 km directly north of Quebec at the northern tip of the Quebec Peninsula in Nunavik. The main property is 40 km in length stretching from the Donaldson airport area at the eastern edge of the property to East Lake at the western edge. The Deception Bay port is 90 km north of the main complex/mill situated at Katinniq which lies approximately in the middle of the property (Fig. 1). The mine processes 1 000 000 tpy of ore from both open pit and underground sources. The mill is forecasted this year to produce more than 150 000 t of concentrate grading more than 18% nickel. All personnel and critical cargo are transported to the site via a company-leased 737 jet from Rouyn-Noranda where the main administration office is located. The majority of cargo is shipped to the site via Deception Bay from Quebec and on the return trip, nickel concentrate is shipped back. The Canadian steel industry is now in many ways a mature one, having achieved many technical successes during its hundred-year history. It is interesting to look back over this period, to learn something of the histories of the different producers and of the people and forces that shaped their development. The following article provides a thumbnail sketch of the Canadian steel industry as it exists today. It is intended for the general reader, not for the specialist who will want to consult the several books and theses written on the development of the industry during the last hundred years. The famous Les Forges du Saint-Maurice, an important iron producer for a century and a half, provides a natural historical starting point for a look at the four major players - Dosco, Algoma, Stelco and Dofasco - who have provided most of the hundreds of millions of tonnes of steel, in every form from horseshoes to tinplate, needed in the twentieth century. The smaller companies which have sprung up in the last 20 or 30 years are dealt with briefly - but only because their history is so recent. Not so long ago the mini-mill, based on scrap rather than on the blast furnace, was thought to be specially suited to the economies of the smaller developing countries of the Third World. However, recent history has made it evident that the small plant, specializing in a few basic products (e.g. reinforcing bar) or taking advantage of special circumstances, can successfully compete with the large blast furnace/primary steel producers.

"In the past, smelting and refining of the precious metals recovered from ore has been generally looked upon as a small and relatively minor component of the business of gold mining. This is not surprising when one considers that the manpower, space and capital components of a gold refinery at an operating mine can be several orders of magnitude smaller than other unit operations at the same location. This philosophy is changing however, as economic and environmental pressure are forcing a re-evaluation of all aspects of gold mining and milling.This paper describes and evaluates three furnace technologies available and used by precious metal operators. The operation of arc, induction, and reverberatory furnaces are discussed and their strengths and weaknesses with respect to capital cost, impurity removal, slag quality, and environmental concerns highlighted.INTRODUCTIONIn the past, smelting and refining of precious metals recovered from ore has been generally looked upon as a small and relatively minor component of the business of gold mining. Generally, gold producers will spend a great deal of effort to squeeze the last drop of efficiency out of a leach or grinding circuit via simulation or testwork but will design and build the refinery based upon past practices or industry standards. That past practices or industry standards will provide a functional refinery is undisputed; that this philosophy achieves the efficiencies that are possible or demanded in other plant operations is debatable.Environmental and worker hygiene requirements are considerations as well. Pollution control equipment can become a substantial contributor to both the capital and operating costs of a refinery and furnace selection has a marked influence upon the type and cost of this equipment. Slag characteristics and subsequent processing options available also play a role in furnace selection as precious metal slag losses and the recovery effort can greatly influence the cost / benefit analysis of a particular technology."

ASARCO LLC (Asarco) Hayden Copper smelter, in Hayden, Arizona, has operated continuously (except for minor labor and economic curtailments) since 1912. The current plant configuration comprises INCO flash smelting, Peirce Smith (P-S) converting and fire refining/anode casting. In order to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 1-hour National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for sulfur dioxide promulgated in June 2010, the Hayden smelter had to increase overall sulfur fixation from approximately 95 % to 99+ %, requiring a retrofit of the existing converter department and upgrade of associated emissions controls systems. The Converter Retrofit Project (CRP) involved replacing the five existing 13’ diameter Peirce-Smith converters (2 blowing, 2 hot standby) with three new 15’ diameter Peirce- Smith converters (1 blowing, 1 hot standby) to allow for more effective process gas capture using the existing acid plant contact section. Significant upgrades were made to the acid plant wet gas cleaning section and converter primary gas handling system to improve capture performance, reliability, and sludge handling. In addition, a new tertiary gas capture system was installed to further minimize fugitive emissions from the converter aisle. The existing furnace tapping ventilation ESP was replaced with a new baghouse to enable at least 50% SO2 removal using high-surface-area dry lime injection, which was also implemented on the existing converter secondary gas baghouse system. The first two converters and all gas handling system improvements were started up in April 2018, and the third converter was brought online in November 2018. This paper presents the regulatory context; genesis and rationale for CRP; detailed description of the project; challenges during commissioning; system improvements implemented, and design considerations made, and systems performance and process optimization achieved since startup.
