Mining is a water intensive sector, contributing to declining water resource quality around the world. Improvements to current mine water management practices can help reduce the amount of water utilised by the mining sector and the impact on water resources. Creating a water account can help companies understand water use in their operations and identify areas where water reduction is possible. Water accounting methods include the Water Footprint Network method and the WaterMiner tool.The Water Footprint Network method is used to determine the amount of direct and indirect water used by an organisation either in a process or to manufacture a product. The total water footprint is divided into the blue, green and grey water footprints. Blue water is the amount of water abstracted from surface and ground water resources. Green water is the amount of rain water utilised. Grey water is the amount of freshwater required to assimilate the waste stream to the natural resource and still conform to ambient water quality standards.The WaterMiner tool is a program available via the internet, which can be used to model water use of mineral processing sites. The program reports the amount of raw, worked and treated water used by the process and recommends flows that can be added to reduce the amount of fresh water required by the process.To gain information on mine water management practices in South Africa, a water account for a platinum mine was developed using the Water Footprint Network method and WaterMiner tool. The particle dynamics of a mixture of coal and zircon system wasstudied in a scaled-down cold model of an industrial kiln. Thefactors investigated in the study were rotational speed (N),zircon-to-coal feed ratio (B), coal particle size (dpc) and the angle of inclination (*) of the kiln. The technique used is the residence time distribution (RTD) method. It was found that rotational speed and angle of inclination are important parameters that affect the residence time of particles in the kiln. A mathematical model for predicting the mean residence time of particles in the rotary kiln was developed. Comparisons with reported models for such systems are discussed.

Coal exploration has traditionally involved the acquisition of data to enable a resource to be quantified and qualified to the extent that its economic potential can be determined. This process commonly relied on: drilling to determine the depth and thickness of coal seams, broad characterisation of the overburden and interburden, and to provide cores for coal quality analyses; basic wireline logging to cross-check the depth and thickness of coal seams and provide some indication of rock mass strength; and basic surface geophysics and remote sensing to identify major geological structures. In recent years, the adoption of the JORC Code as a basis for the reporting of resources and reserves has placed a greater emphasis on the need for detailed, reproducible data sets that not only satisfy the traditional requirements of mine planners, but also satisfy the governance requirements of corporate and financial institutions. Similarly, the development of sophisticated numerical modelling techniques for use in both open cut and underground mine design, has seen a greater demand for precise geotechnical data, in situ stress characterisation and hydrological information as routine input to the design process. These requirements, coupled with the prevailing trend toward high capital, relatively inflexible mining techniques less tolerant of geological surprises, and the need for consideration of environmental issues such as groundwater impacts and surface subsidence, requires that modern exploration programs be multifaceted, and designed to commence capturing data relevant to ædownstream issuesÆ even during the initial phases of exploration planning.

The traditional measure of Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) as a measure of improvement in safety performance is recognised as inadequate and misleading, lulling managers into believing that safety is improving. It is a reactive measure, and steadily declining LTIFRs around the world have failed to be accompanied by a similar reduction in the fatality rate. This paper confronts the industry with the attitudes of some mining managers, such as one that allowed fatalities to occur in the case of a gold mining company at a rate of one death per 150 000 ounces of gold produced while claiming their safety record has improved, as shown by a falling LTIFR, and viewing fatality reductions as a long-term goal instead of an immediate priority. A quantum shift in management attitudes is required to focus on proactive measurements to detect the indicators of an impending disaster, and to predict conditions conducive to fatalities. Corporate CEOs are challenged to attend the funerals of all workers killed in the workplace. CEOs who fail to attend such funerals send a message to employees that the CEOÆs priorities lie elsewhere, and that profits take priority over workersÆ lives. The dichotomy of whether mining companies are run for the benefit of shareholders or whether companies owe social responsibility to the community is examined. The role of individual responsibility for personal safety is examined, together with the psychology of employees in the mining industry. A number of proactive measurable indicators are suggested to stimulate discussion on developing robust measuring tools to predict and therefore prevent fatalities.

As the theme of the conference is ære-discover Otago' from the minerals point of view, it is also timely. Of the eight million ounces of gold recorded produced from Otago, perhaps a quarter of this came from the goldfields of St Bathans, Vinegar Hill and Cambrians. The most notable among them was the Kildare Hill Mine, which is the so-called Blue Lake at St Bathans today. The bottom wash encountered in this mine contained the famous Kildare lead, which averaged 7 1/2 dwt to the dish, and is still one of the richest leads of alluvial gold known in the world. The richness of this lead, the best encountered in these gold fields, is otherwise stated to have yielded more than 42 ounces of gold to the cubic yard. It should be borne in mind that this equates to about $22 000 per cubic metre, in todayÆs values. I have been told by older residents of this district that in fact about 1 million ounces came out of the Kildare mine and associated workings. In todayÆs values, this would be about 530 million dollars worth of gold. The largest mines in the district were at Surface Hill, Kildare Hill, Nicholsons, Vinegar Hill, the Never Fail claim at Shepherds Flat nearby, and at Cambrians. It would appear that in almost every case, work stopped when the bottom wash progressed too deep down dip of the anticline hills on which it was initially found. The mining methods were sluicing and hydraulic elevating, and although the gold bearing ground did not stop, eventually it exceeded the ability of the mining methods then available years ago, to work it further. When it is realised that the previous mining has removed what is likely to be only a low percentage of the gold resources in these fields, a tantalising situation presents itself today in that mining technology now available will enable another cut to be taken off these fields. As in the past, I believe this will be million ounce plus and multi-million dollar scenarios, where the economic and social benefits will become widespread prizes.

In this paper, some of the constraints to applying bioremediation to the decontamination of polluted soils are introduced. Particularly, attention has been given to those associated with the geology of the polluted site. Areas which require further research have been addressed and indicate that geologists will play a key role, alongside microbial ecologists and engineers, in designing and implementing bioremediation strategies.

When production targets are not being reached it is essential to determine what the operating problems are so that remedial action can be taken. It is also imperative that all persons who are part of the production stream within a mining operation know and understand what the operating difficulties and delays are so that corrective action is effective. This includes the supervisors, superintendents, planning team members and managers. A new approach recently adopted at Hilton Mine to help identify these operating difficulties has been to use short-term schedules and reports known as the Daily Shift Schedule Controls (DSSC), and the Daily Weekly Operating Reports (DWOR) respectively. These control elements have enabled management and supervisory staff to accurately identify labour inefficiencies and ultimately determine capital resources.

For resources projects with healthy net present value (NPV) and low cash flow volatility, conventional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis will continue to provide the dominant investment decision-making criteria. However, DCF analysis can be biased because it often applies a single risk-adjusted discount rate (RADR) to compare the value of projects with different risk characteristics. Many of the difficulties with DCF modelling arise from analystsÆ inability to determine appropriate risk discounts and to estimate expected spot prices inputs for the commodities produced over the life of the project. Modern asset pricing (MAP) is a very valuable complement to DCF analysis in addressing some of these issues. Most papers dealing with MAP, however, while academically rigorous, tend not to be explicit in terms of practical application of this methodology in routine project evaluation. This paper has the objective of reviewing the MAP methodology and of demystifying its complexity, by providing a simple but realistic step-by-step evaluation of a mining project, comparing its DCF and MAP NPV values. The paper concludes that MAP provides a minimum, risk-adjusted æfloorÆ value, thus representing a valuable complement to any DCF valuation.

The Telfer concentrator, located in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia, consists of a dual train gold/copper operation processing ore from one underground and, currently, two open pit mines with differing mineralogy. The flotation circuit of each train was designed to operate in several modes depending on the feed mineralogy. The majority of ore mined at Telfer is processed in a sequential mode where copper minerals are first floated into a saleable copper concentrate followed by the flotation of an auriferous pyrite concentrate which is treated in an on-site hydrometallurgical plant (carbon-in-leach (CIL)). Gold is recovered as a gravity product within the primary grinding circuit, to the copper concentrate, and to a lesser extent, the CIL circuit.Since Telfer was re-opened, with a new concentrator, in 2004, the processing plant has struggled with poor copper concentrate grades, partially due to the excessive entrainment of non-sulfide gangue minerals in the copper flotation circuit and, more recently, due to composite copper particles produced when processing ore from a supplementary satellite pit that has not previously been processed through the new Telfer concentrator. Gold recoveries in the CIL circuit have also been below industry standard. This paper presents the implementation of recent changes made to the circuit to address these performance issues. The reconfiguration of the circuit has involved the installation of the following major equipment items: two ISAMillsÖ in ultra-fine grinding applications (one in the copper circuit and one in the pyrite circuit), two Jameson Cells to improve fine gangue rejection and a bank of 5 + Outotec TC30s to recovery copper and gold from the reground pyrite stream. The correct specification and then selection of primary or major fans for an underground mine is a critical decision not only in terms of fan capital and operating costs, but also safety and reliability which usually has a major impact on mine production. In addition, fan manufacturers may spend tens of thousands of dollars preparing proposals for a purchase enquiry for primary fans especially where they have complete responsibility for the installation (turnkey projects). There are many good reasons to thoroughly and fairly adjudicate fan tenders. Iran has had an active mining sector for some 7000 years. Exceptional in terms of its mineral diversity, Iran produces 62 minerals, and is ranked among the world’s 15 most mineral-rich countries. Many people around the world know Iran as one of the major petroleum exporters. Oil and natural gas dominate Iran’s economy, and oil exports provide the principal source of income, contributing more than 80 per cent of foreign exchange earnings. Transformation of Iran from an oil exporter to an independent country to oil has been on the table for many years, even before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Development of the Iran’s mineral industry is one of the major replacements for petroleum exports. In the last decade, Iran invested billion dollars in the mining and mineral industry sectors and to increase the added value, tried to export processed minerals instead of the raw materials. In accordance with the ‘20-year Perspective 2025’ that targeted by the Supreme Leader, Iran will be a country with the first rank in economy, science and technology in its region. The objectives over this perspective include briefly increasing annual production to 55 Mt of crude steel, 800 000 tonne of copper cathode, 1.5 Mt of aluminium, 200 Mt mineral products, 300 000 tonne of zinc and 5 000 kg of gold. These goals are achievable in normal circumstances, but concurrency of the 20-year Perspective 2025 with commencement of the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, frustrated objectives of the perspective, at least the ones related to the mining and mineral industry sectors. This paper tries to elaborate the development programs and following challenges for the mining activities of Iran by 2025.

During 2015 and 2016, the authors conducted a number of surveys, workshops and reviews of ventilation and gas management practices in Australian underground coalmines. The study was funded by ACARP with a brief to identify gaps in ventilation and gas management practices for current and future needs, and to prepare a road map for change that would assist in delivering improvements.The study found that despite many examples of leading practice, gas and ventilation management is not afforded the attention and priority that is warranted and that this must be remedied if future operational performance targets are to be achieved and the safety of the industry protected. Most people are familiar with Euclidean dimensions: zero for a point; one for a line; two for a plane; and three for a volume. Howeverbobjects are not actually Euclidean, but lie somewhere between Euclidean æend-membersÆ with a non-integer fractal (or æfractionalÆ) dimension. The fractal dimension D is a measure of the relative importance of large versus small. Consider the trace of a coastline on a map. It has a fractal dimension (1 =D =2) somewhere between a line (dimension = 1) and a plane (dimension = 2). The more tortuous the coastline, the higher the fractal dimension, and the closer it becomes towards a plane. The concepts of fractals and spatial geometry can be applied to a wide range of geologicaVmining problems as well as than those dealing with space. One commonly quoted fractal relation is the log-log relationship of ore-grade and tonnage. Until recently, we have never been able to define or measure spatial-geometry, but new developments in mathematics have provided a means by which to quantity and apply it to our problems.

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements com- menced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and com- pared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Program- mable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

Herbert Stream, a tributary of the Waimangaroa River on the Stockton Plateau, has elevated metal concentrations and low pH characteristic of acid mine drainage (AMD). Dissolved aluminium concentrations average 8.3 ppm, iron 1.4 ppm, manganese 0.69 ppm, and zinc 0.12 ppm and pH ranges from 2.8 to 3.2. Flow rates range from 2.3 to 26.6 L/s with an average of 5.3 L/s. To determine the effectiveness of different treatment strategies, a small amount of the AMD was diverted through three small-scale passive AMD remediation systems over an eight month period. These included a reducing and alkalinity producing system (RAPS), a limestone leaching bed (LLB), and an open limestone channel (OLC). Both the RAPS and the LLB performed well, effectively removing metals and restoring pH. The RAPS lowered aluminium concentrations by up to 99%, iron 97%, manganese 95%, and zinc 80% and the LLB lowered aluminium concentrations by up to 99%, iron 99%, manganese 92%, and zinc 91%. The pH was restored to between 6.4 and 7.4 by the RAPS and to between 7.3 and 7.9 by the LLB. The OLC performed well as long as the residence time was similar to that of the other treatment systems. OLC removal rates for aluminium was up to 99%, iron 94%, and manganese 21%, and the pH was restored up to 5.6. Due to its simplicity and effectiveness, it is proposed the LLB be constructed to fullscale size to treat the entire Herbert Stream.

Solid Energy New Zealand Limited owns and operates the Ohai coal field (Wairaki Coal Mining Licence, CML) in western Southland. The Morley Stream passes directly through the middle of the CML and has required diversion in the past to enable open cast mining to proceed. Solid Energy is evaluating two new open cast pits at Ohai. Commissioning these new pits would necessitate further diversion of the Morley Stream. One of these potential new mines is adjacent to an abandoned State Coal Mines (State Coal) pit and there is an opportunity to substantially rehabilitate this old pit as a corollary to the new mine and the stream diversion project.   Past Morley Stream diversions were undertaken by State Coal and so they predated the Resource Management Act 1991 and the degree of community environmental awareness and involvement that has become the norm these days. Not surprisingly the design and construction of the historic stream diversions was based purely upon mining (operational) and engineering considerations. This led to the stream being diverted in a manner that achieved the clinical conveyance of design volumes of water from points A and B.   Solid Energy realised that the proposed new diversions need to adopt more holistic and environmentally sustainable design principles while also including appropriate mining and engineering constraints. This project involved the design of a 1.7 km diversion of the Morley Stream (median flow of about 1000 litres/second) that would enable progressive prestripping and development of the new mines and would also address final rehabilitation (of the stream), geotechnical risks, hydrological and ecological issues. To address all of these factors the project required a multidisciplinary approach. Moreover, it required a clear understanding of how the mining operational constraints could be integrated with the environmental considerations. A significant aspect of the project was how to take account of fishery instream habitat needs, the resource consent requirements and most of all, the involvement of key stakeholders such as the Fish & Game Council, Department of Conservation, the Iwi and local community in the design process. This was achieved through coordinated consultation and stakeholder involvement in a technical design workshop.
