A current trend amongst producers is the increase in dewatering of iron ore fines (<0.5 mm), due to an increase in wet beneficiation processes used to upgrade lower quality ore deposits, increased water content in orebodies located below the water table, and increasing focus on transportable moisture limits (TML). Vacuum filtration is commonly used for dewatering of iron ore fines, and as with all filtration processes performance decreases with particle size. Significant improvements are possible with the use of filter aids, usually anionic surfactants and flocculants. Anionic surfactants reduce the surface tension of the associated water, which is then removed more readily leading to improved filtercake moistures. Anionic flocculants used correctly can improve cake permeability, in turn, decreasing cake formation times and increasing filtration rates. In addition to increased throughput, savings and benefits for producers can include: moisture limit penalties, improved handleability, along with energy and water savings.The effect of filter aids on two iron ore fines samples from the Pilbara region were evaluated using a lab scale vacuum filtration unit. The first sample showed a reduction in the filtercake moisture content by 2.3 per cent weight/weight (w/w) with the use of BASF’s Drimax® 1234. For the second sample a reduction in the filtercake moisture of 3.4 per cent w/w along with an increase in filtration rate of 20 per cent was achieved by using a combination of Magnafloc® 5250 and Drimax® 1239 NF, as both filter throughput and cake moisture were considered important by site.CITATION:Haskell, T, Dickie, S and Joe, Y, 2017. Ausmelt top submerged lance technology is at the cutting edge of technological developments in non-ferrous metal smelting with commercial operations throughout the world. The Technology is being used for lead smelting, copper smelting and matte converting, fuming zinc from slags, recycling iron residue from zinc plants, processing the aluminium industry hazardous waste SPL , precious metal processing, nickel-copper residue smelting and converting, and tin smelting. The Technology is also being developed for projects involving iron-making and waste industry opportunities. There are 19 furnaces operable or under design at the time of writing. The benefits to operators using Ausmelt Technology vary depending on application, but typically result from environmental improvements, enhanced recovery of valuable products, lower capital and operating costs, more flexible operations capable of handling a wide range of feed materials, better removal of impurities, or improved product quality. Growing industry acceptance of the Technology is evidenced by the fact that more than 20 per cent of the worldÆs tin production will be extracted in systems using Ausmelt Technology when the Yunnan Tin Corporation plant starts up in 2001. Metallurgists, industrialists and investors have accepted the Technology for improved operations in both greenfield main smelters and add-on plants in Korea, China, Japan, Germany, Peru, Zimbabwe, India, Namibia and Australia. Ausmelt intends that this paper will update the industry by outlining recent achievements of the Technology in global metallurgical operations.

Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins in Western Southland include a wide range of non-marine and marine sediments, in a structurally complex setting dominated by major fault systems. A reassessment of their mineral potential confirms large quantities of nonmetallic minerals (limestone, aggregate, marl), and smaller reserves of bituminous coal, lignite, clays, and oil shale. Hydrocarbon potential is largely untested. Metallic minerals are present in trace amounts, apart from platinum group minerals and some detrital gold. In the offshore area, seismic data suggest the hydrocarbon potential is significant. The Orepuki area has the most interest onshore.

Goldfields (Tasmania) Limited operates a small, high-grade underground gold mine on the West Coast of Tasmania, 30 kilometres north of Queenstown. The main orebody, Zone 96, was discovered in 1989, with major development work commencing in 1993. The mine was officially opened in July, 1996. Initial production came from a shallow orebody known as the Sill Zone, some 50 - 150 m below surface, which was accessed by a 1 in 8 decline. Zone 96 lies between 350 m and 550 m below the surface and is accessed by a 402 m deep, 3.2 m diameter internal shaft from the collar level located 100 m below surface. The main ore extraction system in Zone 96 is mechanised cut and fill, using high density paste fill. Run of mine ore and waste are hoisted in a single 5.5 tonne overturning skip, then trucked from the underground collar to the gold plant ROM pad or waste dump, respectively. Ground conditions in the mine vary with orientation and proximity to major faults. The gold is contained in a sequence of strongly altered volcanic rocks adjacent to the Henty Fault. Most of the gold is contained in massive quartz, ranging in width from 0.5 m to 7 m, which has been subjected to substantial faulting. Average mineable grade is about 27 grams gold per tonne. Ore reserves in 1996 proved an initial mine life of approximately 4.5 years at 90 000 ounces gold per annum, with significant potential for additional resources from extensions to Zone 96 and adjacent zones. The lease is located in an environmentally sensitive area and a very high standard of environmental management is an essential part of the operation. This paper describes the relevant aspects of mining at Henty including grade control, ground support, backfill placement and environmental management.

The El Salvador porphyry Cu deposit (26¦ 15Æ Lat S, ~2700 masl) and associated exotic mineralisation is situated at the back-scarp of the late middle Miocene Atacama pediplain in the western Precordillera. New, together with published 40Ar-39Ar data from El Salvador combined with morphologic analysis reveal that the palaeospring plumbing system related to exotic mineralisation at the Damiana exotic Cu deposit and the local geomorphology has not changed fundamentally between the late Eocene and late Miocene. Stable H/D isotope data on supergene alunite from El Salvador indicate an overall increase in dD values (VSMOW) from -74ë at 35.82 ¦ 0.95 Ma to -23ë at ~11 Ma. The transition from strongly to moderately negative deuterium values occurred between ~16 and ~13.5 Ma. Supergene alunite from the El Hueso (3950 masl) sedimentary rock-hosted epithermal deposit ca 35 km SE from El Salvador was dated at 8.19 ¦ 0.01 Ma and yielded a dD value of -25ë. We interpret the increasing deuterium excess as the result of strong evaporation and recycling of meteoric water after ~15 Ma and as indicative for a change in precipitation patterns and climate desiccation. In contrast, the strongly negative dD value for late Eocene supergene alunite points to a more humid climate and an elevation similar to the present. The late Miocene supergene activity at El Hueso is probably related to an uplift of the Precordillera to elevations sufficient for capture of orographically controlled precipitation. The investigation of the potential of the Webb/Baynes block of the Buller coalfield for anode carbon manufacture has generated much information on the physical beneficiation characteristics of the Buller coals in general. A further 36 drill holes of the block in question and several other samples have been analysed by sink/float analysis, either at a single density or over a range of densities. In addition, many samples have been beneficiated on a laboratory shaking table or by flotation. The ash content can be reduced by a variable factor. The reduction factor of between two and four by sink/float analysts is understandably less for tabling where separation is not perfect. All Buller coals behave similarly, there being greater ash reduction factors for higher ash coals.

The mineral processing industry is in boom times. The focus on mill availability and therefore profitability has never been greater, as grinding mill maintenance often dictates the entire plant shut down duration. Advances in mill systemsÆ quality and reliability and the faster, safer relining afforded by RMEÆs Mill Relining Systems have significantly enhanced grinding plant availability and utilisation. Yet relining performance is still affected by the design and planning by a team of stakeholders long before the maintenance team set foot in the mill. For a greenfield grinding plant project, these team players include: 1. project owner, 2. project manager, 3. mill supplier, 4. liner supplier, 5. plant operating personnel, 6. plant maintenance personnel, 7. mill relining crew, and  8. mill reline system supplier (RME). The complex and sometimes competing design demands of mill construction and operation together with the pressure of tight timelines can result in even simple maintenance requirements being overlooked let alone optimising plant design and planning for maintenance. This paper identifies all the involved stakeholders in an effective mill relining 'team' and gives principles and considerations for each to more effectively achieve the goals within their vital roles. This paper is aimed to be a practical guide for grinding mill designers and planners to more fully exploit the advances in Mill Relining Systems and improve their mill profitability.

"This paper discusses a method to build a calibrated comminution circuit model, using historic operating data and blend information that is useful for forecasting and optimising plant performance, as well as evaluating expansion opportunities. A preferred method for building a calibrated power-based comminution model is discussed and justified based on two case studies, offering low-cost and effective strategies to utilise existing information for the maximum possible benefit.The first example is the Lefa Gold Mine located in Guinea, West Africa operating a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling circuit with recycle crushing (SABC). Daily blend information and operating data was utilised to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit. The least squares regression method was used to solve the SAG mill specific energy requirement and the operating work index (Wio) for each individual ore type. The calibrated model was used to evaluate expansion strategies to sustain throughput at higher proportions of fresh ore based on the proposed life-of-mine schedule.The second example is the Ok Tedi Copper-Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea operating a SAG and ball milling circuit (SAB). The circuit limitation would often shift between the SAG mill and the ball mill due to variable ore characteristics and feed blend. Typical SAG mill relief strategies, such as recycle crushing or secondary crushing, required significant capital expenditure and the potential throughput benefit would vary depending on ore type, making economic justification difficult. Daily blend information and operating data was used to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit to identify ore types that might benefit from higher blast intensities to increase fines content, thus relieving the SAG mill limitation and increasing overall throughput without a major capital investment.Citation:Zawadski, A L and Putland, B G, 2016. The Morobe Province of central Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been mined for gold for nearly a century, although it is only in the past decade that large-scale modern mining commenced. The Hidden Valley gold-silver project began construction in mid-2006 and production by August 2009, and is located in the mountains above Wau in the headwaters of the Watut River. The mine is owned and operated by the Morobe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV), which also owns the Wafi-Golpu project, comprising the Wafi gold deposit and Golpu copper-gold deposit, situated in the Watut River Valley. Together they represent a potential mine of the scale of Ok Tedi or Bougainville or bigger. The MMJV is owned in equal shares by Newcrest Mining from Australia and Harmony Gold from South Africa. Although Hidden Valley was the first large-scale mine in PNG to engineer and build a tailings storage facility, poor environmental management during construction and early operations led to significant erosion of waste rock and sedimentation impacts throughout the ~200 km length of the Watut River. Since then, substantial efforts have been made to improve environmental management, especially waste rock placement and storage and water quality management. While the impacts from the Hidden Valley project appear to be reducing, the saga has heightened concerns by many along the Watut River and across PNG about ongoing impacts from mining.This paper presents the results of an ongoing project in the Morobe Province conducted by the Mineral Policy Institute examining the historical, current and future impacts of mining, including community views, social and environmental impacts and the monitoring and regulation of mining. Overall, there is a clear need to more fully integrate social and environmental issues into life-of-mine planning and go above and beyond regulatory requirements. Tonnage and grade are the principal reported components of mineral resource estimates but tonnage is a derivative of two more fundamental estimates; volume and bulk density. Typically, most of the effort in a resource estimation study is directed towards grade and volume, yet poor application of bulk density data to resource models can result in significant biases. The impact on tonnage estimates is easily recognised but poor density estimates may also introduce subtle biases into the grade estimates. Methods for measuring bulk density have been discussed previously. This paper focuses on the manipulation of bulk density data and the extension of bulk density from essentially point measurements to block estimates within resource models. Bulk density is a continuous, geologically controlled, spatial variable and should be treated as such. Issues such as combining data from multiple sources, sample support and the interdependence of bulk density and grade estimates must be resolved. The statistical and geostatistical techniques used for grade estimation are, under the right circumstances, equally applicable to bulk density. The importance of bulk density needs to be recognised. With robust raw data and correct estimation procedures, better estimates of bulk density can be obtained and both local and global tonnage and grade estimates can be improved.

This work goes beyond the general perception of how the well-known mine to mill process can be applied, by applying deeper knowledge along the mining chain. Grade deportment and dilution are considered at the mining stage, and modelled with the new SMI blast movement simulator, linking with the block model data. Assessing the shift to a considerably more competent section of the orebody is quantified via substantial milling trials at standard and higher-intensity blasts. These were stockpiled for batch processing through the mill to ensure feed integrity. The trial work included operating the mill at widely different fillings to develop Grindcurve milling responses. Additionally, model informed process control is initiated via a mill prediction tool.It has been found that accounting for blast movement for the higher intensity blasts could generate additional value of around $1.5M per blast. With the high-intensity blast and changing mill control, the plant was easily able to exceed projected mill throughputs with the far more competent Pipeline ore. Strategies to shift the workload and debottleneck the milling circuit were proposed and proven during the milling trials, demonstrating an increase in throughput of 7 per cent despite running at a lower SAG mill speed, and potential of 16 per cent for increasing the SAG mill to standard operating speed. A number of process improvement opportunities have been identified to enhance current productivity and ensure long term capability to process the considerably more competent future ores. All of this is being linked in with the major digitisation program at the Barrick Cortez site, with an objective of linking all the data into a mine-wide process optimisation system, that can embed the processes by providing process-wide data access and production support via the future dynamic models linking ore body knowledge to productivity along the full process chain.CITATION:Powell, M, Yahyaei, M, Geronimo, J, Yussupova, Z and Kumar, P, 2018. The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New- York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company's faith in pioneering' this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three-year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.

Bioremediation of Acid Mine Water Using Fly Ash and Desulfotomaculum nigrificans One of the major concerns for the mining industry especially after the mine closure is the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD), and its discharge into the environment surrounding the abandoned mines, leading to serious environmental pollution. AMD is usually characterized by high concentration of dissolved metal ions, sulfate and low pH. The efficacy of fly ash was assessed for the removal of metal ions such as iron, zinc and copper as well as sulfate from synthetic acid mine water. Complete removal of ferric and ferrous, 80 per cent of Zn, 83 per cent of Cu and 62 per cent sulfate removal could be achieved, with a concomitant increase in the pH value from 2.3 to 7 using fly ash as an adsorbent under appropriate conditions. The free energy of adsorption of the metal ions onto fly ash was found to be negative, while the adsorption process was endothermic and adhered to the Lagergren pseudo-first order rate equation. Bioremediation studies using a typical sulfate reducing bacterium namely Desulfotomaculum nigrificans, after pre-treatment of the synthetic acid mine water with fly ash, cumulatively resulted in about 94 per cent zinc, 100 per cent copper and 90 per cent sulfate removal. The possible mechanisms of metal ion removal and sulfate reduction from acid mine water utilising Desulfotomaculum nigrificans are discussed.

Project-finance risk assessment is mature and approached systematically. Mining industry due diligence remains fragmented with specialists addressing different aspects of the project such as reserves/JORC, environmental impact, commodity market, even financial analysis/ modelling. Each professional has a natural tendency to believe that the risk factors they have examined are the key ones necessary to be reviewed, as if their review will stand in isolation from others in the way a project materialises. By first laying out the project risk categories and risk matrices, this paper examines the due diligence process with a keen eye to the risk assessment and overlap/interaction. Some cross fertilisation of due diligence techniques from other industry sectors is placed into the mining context. Six case studies are then presented with regards to due diligence features in each projectÆs feasibility review or financial information/ offering memorandum. A power case first shows the differences between the due diligence expectations of banks versus bond financings. Then some Australian and Indonesian mining development cases are analysed to see the due diligence learning points. Some of these were project/due diligence failures. The conclusion focuses on the value of a systematic risk assessment for project evaluation, all from the project-finance perspective.
