GEOPHYSICAL exploration is continuing to expand in scope and variety of methods, in experimental studies of specific applications, and in development of theory for complex situations. Aerial surveys have been made economically more attractive by simultaneous recording of magnetic and radioactivity data, and aerial electromagnetic surveys have been attempted. The most significant success of mining geophysics was the discovery of huge lead-zinc-copper sulphide ore deposits in New Brunswick, Canada. Spectacular geophysical astivity has occurred in the area as a result of these discoveries, and geophysics is expected to continue to play a large role in this drift-covered area. Other developments this year find the Atomic Energy Commission making available monthly reports of the location of anomalous radioactivity detected in aerial and ground surveys and the AEC is installing supersensitive radioactivity assaying instruments in about 25 localities in the U. S. Interest in helicopters is being aroused because of potentialities for near-ground surveys and better location control of anomalies. Japan can be added to the list of countries using geophysical surveys extensively.

IN the long list of our illustrious and lamented dead, there are names which recall personality as well as career and achievement; social as well as scientific merit; devotion to the Institute itself as well as to some one of the professions which it represents. These men we remember because they did not forget us; besides our pride in their wider work and fame, we are proud of what they did with and through us; especially do we rejoice if our early recognition of them opened the way to a recognition by the world; and in their departure we claim to sorrow, not merely as members of an appreciative public, but also as. bereaved personal friends. In common with thousands, we regret our loss, but we do not regret only-we mourn and miss. To this group of those whose death has brought to us the double sense. of public and private grief belonged our strong, bright, dear brother, in whose memory this inadequate tribute is offered. Charles Benjamin Dudley was born July 14, 1842, at Oxford, Chenango county, N. Y. He came on both sides of New England blood, his father being from New Hampshire and his mother from Connecticut. Emigrating from the rocky hills of their native States, they. settled upon the more fertile soil of what was then regarded as the West, and, with thousands of other pilgrim sons, imitating the pilgrim fathers, contributed to the foundation of new commonwealths. The Empire State owes much to this element of its population. Dudley's early education was obtained, like that of the sons of the pioneers generally, by attending the village school and academy in the autumn and winter, while he worked upon the farm during the rest of the year. But his ambition looked forward to a college-course; and this was almost within his reach when a passion still stronger took possession of him. The out-

THE occurrence of twins in large ferrite crystals, made by a new process, was reported in a recent note. This paper describes a typical case of such twinning and suggests, on the basis of the observed facts, why smooth slip-planes are rarely observed in this metal. METHOD OF PREPARATION The material In which the crystals here dealt with were grown was made from 1/8 -in. Armco iron welding rod containing C, 0.04; S, 0.037; P, 0.003; Si, 0.008, and Mn, 0.02 per cent. This rod was cold drawn into wire about 1 mm. dia. A piece of this wire was supported vertically and was locally heated in hydrogen at atmospheric pressure to about 1400° C. by an alternating current (60 cycles per sec.) of about 35 amp., passed through it between a pair of travelling contacts about 8 cm. apart. The rate of travel for the case in hand was 12 cm. per hr. After some 30 cm. of the length of the wire had been heated and cooled in this manner the whole wire was immersed for a few seconds in dilute nitric acid, not restrained by alcohol. Etching was continued until, as nearly as could be judged by eye, the original smooth cylindrical surface of the wire was no longer capable of specular reflection.

IN Bolivia, mining is still the principal economic activity, as it was before and during the Spanish Colonial period. Tin, tungsten, antimony, copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, sulphur, and a little bismuth are produced. The Andes mountains are divided into two main ranges in Bolivia; the Western range marks the border with Chile and the Eastern range forms the backbone of the country; in the North it drops rather abruptly eastward, to the plains of the Beni, whereas in the South it splits and is separated from the Chaco flatlands by a series of folded mountain ranges. In general the mineral deposits are found within the Eastern range or in the hills that rise from the high plateau between the ranges - really parts of the Eastern range partly submerged by recent sediments. The mineral belt is thus over 500 miles long and about 100 miles wide and includes most of the principal centers of population and the most important means of communication. The region is mountainous and the roads are bad; furthermore labor is a serious problem, for the land is poor and the agricultural population is never far from hunger. The floating supply of miners is limited and soon exhausted in any emergency like the present.

This paper embodies the results of his observations, plus information personally communicated by Robert Scheibe, Professor of Geology in the Mining Academy of Berlin, who at the time of the visit was completing a detailed field investigation of nearly a year's duration of the emerald deposits of Colombia. An elaborate account of this valuable work may be expected at a future date from the pen of Professor Scheibe.

The minerals barite (BaSO4-barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO3-barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modern industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry which in 1980 consumed at least 90% of the world's production of 8.8 million tons as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid, called mud, that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The remaining 10% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite occurs throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity filling, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world's demand for barite is expected to increase, and geologic circumstances are favorable for the discovery of new deposits of commercial value. Witherite is much less common and abundant than barite, although it is more desirable in many ways as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals. The United States has not produced witherite since about 1950; England is currently the chief producer of witherite. End Uses Most of the world's barite production since 1926 has been used as a weighting agent for the muds circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The muds fundamentally are mixtures of water, clay, and barite in different proportions that vary according to local reservoir conditions. Muds with a specific gravity as great as 2.5 are used. The mud is pumped down the hollow drill stem, passes through the bit at the bottom of the hole, and rises to the surface in the space between the drill stem and the wall of the hole. In the course of this circulation the drill bit is cooled, cuttings are removed, the drill stem is lubricated, the walls of the hole are sealed, and the hydrostatic head of the column of weighted fluid helps to confine high oil and gas pressures. The latter feature aids in prevention of gushers, thus reducing both environmental pollution and waste of oil and gas resources as well as conserving the natural reservoir pressure for greater production and rate of recovery of the products contained in the rocks. Barite is particularly well suited for drilling mud because it is clean, easy to handle, soft (nonabrasive), heavy, virtually inert chemically, and relatively inexpensive compared to many other available heavy materials. Barite is used in the manufacture of glass in continuous tanks. The addition of barite homogenizes the melt and gives greater brilliance and clarity to the finished glass. Ground barite, both unbleached and bleached by sulfuric acid, is a common industrial filler, extender, and weighting agent. The rubber industry is a major consumer of barite as a filler. Barite also is added to bristolboard, heavy printing paper, playing cards, rope finishes, brake linings, clutch facings, plastics, and linoleum, to name but a few uses. Bleached barite has long been an extender in white lead paint because of its weight. The low index of refraction of barite, however, makes its ability to cover marks poorer than some other substances, but its low capacity for absorption of oil is a good feature. Off-color or unbleached barite can be used as a filler in colored paints. In the construction industry, some lump barite is used in concrete aggregate to weigh down pipelines buried in marshy areas and to shield nuclear reactors. Because barite absorbs gamma radiation well, its use reduces the amount of expensive lead shielding otherwise

THIS study of the ternary has been made as one phase of a metallurgical investigation which began nearly four years ago in the General Electric Company's Research Laboratory in Schenectady, N. Y. The objective of this program is the discovery of new metallurgical information which will lead to the development of better high-temperature materials. Combinations of the four pure base elements—iron, chromium, nickel, and cobalt—are being studied at the present time. It is essential in an investigation such as this to know as much as possible about the constitutional diagrams involved. The study of the iron-chromium-nickel system has been made to this end. Preliminary Explanation of Experimental Procedure: In all, fifty-five alloys at steps of 10 at. pct were made for the investigation of this ternary. Several ternary alloys in the chromium rich corner had to be omitted because their extreme brittleness made testing impractical. All alloys were vacuum melted with hydrogen reduction and centrifugally cast. The apparatus and technique of this process has been described in detail by Nisbet.1,2 The purity of the alloys prepared in this way is considered to be quite good. Impurities are listed as follows: Pct Carbon.............................0.02 Oxygen................................0.02 Nitrogen.........................0.005 Magnesium..................0.03-0.05 Sulphur...........................trace Hydrogen....................trace Phosphorous..................trace Silicon........................ trace After casting, all samples were given a homo-genization treatment which consisted of holding them for 15 hr at 1150°C (2100°F) and water quenching. Testing was begun with the samples in this condition. The tests employed in the study of this system were (1) dilatometer, (2) hardness versus aging temperature, (3) tensile strength and elongation versus temperature, (4) microstructure analysis, and (5) electrical resistance versus temperature. Dilatometer tests were made at the rather rapid heating rate of 1093°C (2000°F) in one hour on a Bristol-Rockwell type instrument. Hardness data were taken on specimens cooled from 204", 427", 649°, 760°, 871°, 982°, and 1093°C under conditions which are thought sufficient to bring the specimens to equilibrium in all but the cases of the very sluggish transformations. Electrical resistance data for several specimens were taken for both heating and cooling conditions in a vacuum furnace especially designed for this work by D. W. Bainbridge, formerly of this laboratory. Provisions were made for heating and cooling standard specimens at a constant rate, while autographic records of resistance and temperature were made simultaneously. Micrographs of all the alloys were made in the quenched condition. Some question may exist as to how such physical values as hardness, tensile strength, and elongation were interpreted to indicate a change in phase. Original data were recorded on physical property versus temperature graphs, each of which was made from the data of a single alloy (fig. la). From these, another series of graphs were plotted with the physical property as a function of composition for constant temperatures (fig. 1b). Sharp deviations in the slope of these composition versus hardness curves often indicate a change in phase. The example of fig. 1 will serve to describe this experimental technique. The plotting of a single point from graph "a" to graph "b," and finally to the phase diagram "c," is illustrated. The location of the point on graph "b" is indicated as point (1). If all the alloys of the A-B binary system were solid solutions at temperature X, the hardness in this curve would be expected to rise at a fairly even rate as A is diluted with B to a maximum at some intermediate value between A and B, as

THE following notes, prepared in 1908, as the result of a personal examination and extensive explorations under my direction in 1906, have been revised and greatly augmented after two subsequent visits and further explorations in 191.0. The hard iron-ores of the south coast of Oriente Province, in the island of Cuba, have been known for many years, in fact one mine has been in operation for more than 20 years ; but it is only within the past four years that the large mantle-deposits of brown ores of the north coast have attracted serious attention. A. C. Spencer 1 has described these ores in a paper, entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, which refers to the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas deposits. C. M. Weld,2 in a scholarly paper on The Residual Brown Iron-Ores of Cuba, has discussed the character and possible genesis of these deposits with particular reference to the Moa field, calling attention also to the Taco and Navas fields in addition to those described by Spencer. Descriptive articles with reference to the Mayari field, and a few words about the Moa deposit, have also appeared.3 It is the purpose of the present paper to give some account of the exploration of the Moa deposit and to call attention to its commercial importance. LOCATION. The Moa district is situated on the north coast of the . Province of Oriente, which is the most easterly province of the island of Cuba. J. S. HALDANE, M. D., F. R. S., Oxford, England (communication to the Secretary?).-The valuable paper of Messrs. Burrell and Gauger is of special interest to me as, through the courtesy of the management, I had an opportunity of visiting the Portland mine, Cripple Creek, in 1911, in connection with the investigations on acclimatization to high altitudes, carried out on Pike's Peak, near Cripple Creek, by Professors Yandell, Henderson and Schneider, Dr. Douglas and myself.1 The analyses of one or two samples of the vitiated air were entirely confirmatory of those of the authors. A fatal accident owing to two men being lowered down a shaft filled with the gas had occurred in a neighboring mine just before our visit.

THE Salt Creek Oil Field of Wyoming occupies a unique position among the major oil fields of this country. Many years before the beginning of actual production in this area, in 1911, it had attracted country-wide attention as a district holding oil possi¬bilities. Even foreign capital, mainly French and Belgian, had sought out this district as having oil values and spent many thousands of dollars 'in an effort to acquire property rights' in this field which was very largely located on the public domain. Owing to inadequate laws governing the acquisition of oil lands on the Federal domain and a careless practice having grown up among oil land locators of that time, a complicated title situation quickly developed in Salt Creek. This condition of uncertain titles together with the isolation of the field from industrial centers were doubtless the two most potent factors in retarding its early development. After actual production began in 1911 governmental regulations, suits between the government, and the locator, disputed ownerships between locators and claim and counterclaim continued to retard the field's development. It is believed that the title situation in the Salt Creek Field, where potential values of such magnitudes were involved, was responsible more than any other factor for the ultimate passage of the government leasing act in 1920 affecting all oil lands on the Federal domain.

Two sessions during the recent AMC Mining Convention in Los Angeles, September 23-26, served to update industry personnel on the status of health and safety regulations in the US. As reflected by the American Mining Congress resolution on mine safety and health, "Based on experience with the federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, (AMC) does not believe that laws designed to force compliance with regulations through the imposition of criminal or civil penalties will result in safer mines. (AMC) feels that the government's participation will be much more productive if greater emphasis is placed on research, training, and inspections aimed primarily at assisting operators and employees in recognizing and eliminating hazardous conditions and practices.

Resistant Tape A new oil-resistant tape for rapid insulation build-up on splices in large power cables has been announced by Minnesota Mining & Mfg. Co. Designated Scotch brand electrical tape No. 25 is made of synthetic rubber providing greater dielectric strength and resistance to high temperatures. The chemical-resistant qualities of the tape make it suitable for use in oil drilling, mining and underground [ ] cable operations, while the 40-mil thickness and extreme stretch (1500 pct breaking point) make possible smooth insulation wraps on irregular surfaces. Dielectric strength is 15,000 v and 10,000 v at 500 pct elongation. It has an electrolytic corrosion factor of 1.0 and an insulation resistance of 100,000 megohms. Circle No. 1 Hydra-Lift The Pitman Mfg. Co. announces that is now has in production a new model of the Pitman hydra-lift, recently-developed crane with hydraulically-powered boom that can be mounted on the frame of any truck, 1 ½ tons or larger. According to the manufacturer, the new model hydralift model B features a variety of improvements over the original production model, introduced late in 1950. Changes incorporated in the new model, according to officials, not only have resulted in improved crane, but also have given the unit a new profile which distinguishes it sharply from the original model. The two chief improvements in the new model are: a big increase in the unit's safety margin and the fact that it is now shipped almost completely preassembled, cutting the time and cost of installation. Rated capacities of the hydra-lift are based on the tipping factor of a 1 1/2 ton truck, with outriggers down, and thus have not been increased. Circle No. 2

Serrated plastic flow in stable austenitic alloys based on Fe/Ni has been shown to be related to the presence of carbon and/or chromium in the systems. Strength peaks and plateaus in the serrated-flow temperature region for a commercial alloy correlate with an increased dislocation content, arising, presumably, from enhanced multiplication as a result of a strong interaction between dislocations and solute atoms. The data generally support a mechanism controlled by migration of vacancies, with the energy for vacancy motion being modified by the presence of chromium. Chromium atom -dislocation interaction is responsible for effects above 500°C, whereas the defect interacting with dislocations between 200" and 500°C is suggested to be a carbon-vacancy Pair. ThE phenomenon of jerky flow, serrated flow, or the Portevin-le Chatelier (P-C) effect in austenitic stainless steels is usually attributed to substitutional at1,2 mospheres1,2 or to precipitates&apos;-4 which form at dislocations during plastic deformation. On the other hand, evidence exists which supports a direct inter-stitial-dislocation interaction mechanism for serrated flow in fcc Ni-C,5,6 Ni-H7-9 and in nickel-austenites containing carbon." The present work consists in a study of serrated plastic flow in stable austenitic al-loys. The effects of carbon and of chromium were investigated separately, and a commercial stainless steel with different levels of interstitial impurity concentration was studied in an attempt to delineate the combined effects of the alloying elements. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES a) Materials and Fabrication. A commercial AISI 330 stainless steel and several specially prepared aus-tenitic alloys have been studied. The experimental alloys were prepared by arc melting the constituents under purified argon. Analyses of the materials are given in Table I. The commercial alloy was obtained as 5/8 in. bar stock and rolled to 0.092 in. sq, with several intermediate anneals. At this stage some of the material was annealed in Pd-purified hydrogen at 1100°C to establish different levels of interstitial content. All other heat treatments were in vacuum (10-5 torr). The "pure" alloy ingots were swaged to 0.120-in. rod and annealed in Pd-purified hydrogen at 1100°C. The analyses for these conditions are also contained in Table I. Sonon. were obtained by either swaging or cold drawing. The test results did not vary with these techniques. b) Specimen Preparation. Two sizes of specimen and two gripping systems were used. i) 0.070-in. wire with a chemically milled gage section: 0.75 in. long, 0.060 in. in diam. These were fastened into grips containing tapped grooves. ii) 0.050 in. wire, gage length 1.5 in. Ball bearings were welded to the ends of the wires and the gage length was taken to include all material between the welds. Socket-type grips were used with these specimens. With specimens of type ii), joining was performed in a specially constructed brass jig, under argon, and automatic timing was utilized in the procedure. No adverse effects of welding were noted. Specimens were encapsulated and solution treated for 1 hr at temperatures selected to produce the same average grain size, -50 µ. Annealing twin boundaries as well as normal crystal boundaries were counted. The temperatures used are listed in Table 11. Table 11. Specimen Size. INTRODUCTION Leasing has become a major industry in many countries because of the advantages it affords. Whilst the accounting, legal and tax treatment of leasing varies from country to country, there is far more similarity than difference. The general approach to the subject is largely the same. This paper looks to the basic financial considerations in the decision to lease or buy. TYPES OF LEASES Before embarking upon the subject, it would seem appropriate to define a "lease". A lease may be defined as: "an agreement granting one party the right to use, for a specified period of time, property owned by another party in return for a series of payments of rental by the user to the owner&apos;&apos;. Ownership, of course, generally entitles the owner to unrestricted use of the asset over its useful life in contrast to a lease which gives the lessee use over a limited period. The distinction between the status of owner and a lessee often is fairly small. In this case we are dealing with what is generally termed a "finance lease". A finance lease is one which substantially transfers the risks and benefits of ownership from the legal owner to the lessee. For example, a finance lease would exist where the lessee enters into a lease of an asset for most of its useful life and has an option to buy the asset at the end of the lease for a price which takes cognisance of the rentals already paid. Where a lease does not substantially transfer the benefits and risks of ownership to the lessee, i.e. those benefits and risks remain with the owner and lessor, the lease is termed an "operating lease" and is an agreement for the renting and usage by the lessee of an asset owned by the lessor for a limited period. An example of an operating lease might be where a tenant leases a building for a defined period say 6 years with the rent and occupancy subject to renegotiation at the end of the lease term. The economic consequences of the distinction between a finance and an operating lease is very important. With a finance lease, the lessee has a de facto economic interest in the asset and the alternative to a finance lease is some form of purchase; with an operating lease, the lessee does not have a basic economic interest in the asset and consequently a comparison with a purchase option involves far more than simply a funding comparison. Some of the principal differences between finance and operating leases can be summarised as follows: (a) finance leases: -the risks and benefits of ownership are substantially transferred to the lessee; -the lessor normally recovers his investment during the term of the lease; -the lessor in entering into the transaction is relying more on the creditworthiness of the lessee than the underlying value of the asset; - the lease is either non-cancellable or a large penalty will apply for unilateral cancellation by the lessee; (b) operating leases -the risks and benefits of ownership remain essentially with the lessor; -the lease rental income would not normally cover the recovery of the lessor&apos;s investment; -the lessor evaluates his risk in terms of the underlying value of the assets;

Culm is a general term used in the anthracite regions for many years to denote a mixture of coal, bony coal and impurities which is sent to the refuse-banks. Thus, 35 years ago culm contained the pea and buckwheat sizes of anthracite; but to-day, and as mentioned in this paper, culm is used specifically to denote the material which passes through the smallest screen in the anthracite-breaker. The smallest size of commercial anthracite is known as No. 3 buckwheat, barley, or bird&apos;s-eye coal, and is ordinarily made through a round-punched plate having openings & in. in diameter, and over a round-punched plate with openings 3/32 in. or 1/16 in. in diameter. Thus culm will consist of coal, bony coal, slate, gravel, iron pyrite, etc., ranging in size from 3/32 in. down to dust. Other local terms for culm are " slush," " silt," and " dirt." The first experiments towards the utilization of anthracite culm by briquetting, and the first briquetting-work done in this country, were in 1872 at Port Richmond Piers, Philadelphia, Pa., by E. F. Loiseau.1 Clay was used as a binder and the finished briquette was water-proofed with shellac, etc. Excessive cost was given as the reason for discontinuing work at this plant.

During one, what had been a colonial agricultural economy began to industrialize; water power, then steam after 1794, were the energy sources; coal and iron were the essential ingredients. The second stage started after 1850; aided by rich and diverse mineral resources, the country began its transition from the Iron Age to the Age of Metals. Early civilizations had been built on stone, and fairly high levels were sustained on iron. But the spectacular advances in the past century in communication, in construction, in transportation by sea, rail, land and air, and in much that characterizes modern civilization have depended increasingly on the use of the complete metallic and nonmetallic resources of the earth&apos;s crust. Thus it was appropriate to define the Industrial Revolution as “the period during which man&apos;s relationship to natural resources became utterly changed”, 1 with minerals playing a major and indispensable role. But we are now becoming aware that the relationship of man to natural resources must change again. On every hand the dangers inherent in the contamination of land, sea and air by the wastes of civilization are becoming apparent. And from the growing realization that mineral wealth is finite must eventually come other far reaching changes in mineral use and distribution. For on the scale of centuries we cannot continue to exploit mineral resources even at present rates, let alone at expanded rates, without eventual depletion of the more abundant resources, and early exhaustion of the less abundant. With the exception of the exhaustive paper on the Father de Smet mill, by its designer, Mr. A. J. Bowie, Jr. (Bans., x. 87), nothing, so far as the writer is aware, has as yet appeared on the stamp-mills of the Black Hills of Dakota, although they have been steady producers for the last ten years. Within the small area of about 6000 by 1600 feet, $2,271,341.14 was produced in 1887† from rock averaging $4 per ton in free gold. I. The Ores. Character of the Ores.—The gold of the district is found in quartz and pyrites finely distributed through vast bodies of mica- and amphibole-schists, argillites and phyllites, and also impregnating the schists themselves. The " Belt," embracing the section of Lead City, Terraville and Central City, is the only part worked at present. The principal associated mineral is iron pyrites, with some arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, garnet and asbestos. The ores from open cuts and upper levels are more free-milling. than those from underground workings below water-line. Hence

It has been pointed out by Stead1 that grains of considerable coarseness may be developed in steels containing from 3 to 5 per cent. of silicon, and in a previous paper2 the present author has shown that under the proper conditions of annealing single grains having an area of 50 sq. cm. may be obtained. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss in more detail the conditions promoting the growth of these grains, in the hope that the experiments described may throw some additional light upon the general problem of grain growth in metals. These silicon steels lend themselves particularly&apos; well to such experiments because of the ease with which the change in structure may be followed and because of the fact that the effect of the carbon present is largely obliterated by the high percentage of silicon. This forms a solid solution with the iron, which acts very much like a pure metal. This alloy has been found to have but one critical point, viz., Ar2. This point, determined by Roberts-Austen for Hadfield&apos;s 4 per cent. Si alloy, was found to lie at 703" C. Vigouroux3, in working with pure Fe-Si alloys, finds this point to rise from 750" C. for 0.5 per cent. Si to 860" for 6 per cent. alloy, with a flat region in the curve from 3 to 4 per cent. Si. No accurate determination of this point has been undertaken by the present author, but it has been roughly determined to lie between 730" and 750:. In the preliminary experiments, some of which have been described in a previous paper, it was found that practically all of these steels, when annealed to 1,200" C. or higher, showed grains of comparatively large size. These grains varied in size, however, from about 4 sq. mm. to 50 sq. cm. (see Figs. 1 and 2) under the same conditions of anneal, and it was for the purpose of determining the cause of this difference in size that the experiments herein described were undertaken. There are m -I conditions for the stability of a solution of m components with respect to infinitesinzal flucturations. However, in most cases, only one of these conditions has to be considered to determine the domain of instability and the existence of this more restrictive condition greatly simplifies the calculations. It may be used advantageously for the prediction of miscibility gaps and the method is illustrated in details for the case of the Ag-Pb-Zn system. THE thermodynamic conditions for the formation of a miscibility gap may be viewed as a necessary consequence of the conditions for spinodal decomposition. A previous article1 has examined in detail the form of these conditions for multicomponent systems. There is only one condition for the stability of a binary system (with respect to infinitesimal fluctuations), but there are two conditions for a ternary system, and m — 1 conditions for an m-component system. The probability of violating a stability condition, and thus forming a miscibility gap, obviously increases with the number of components, a result which is rather intuitive since the atoms of the solution have now many more ways of redistributing themselves and introducing complexities in the form of the free energy hy-persurface. It is of interest to take advantage of this possibility of precipitating new phases and to examine which stability condition is the likeliest to be violated, that is, which stability condition is thermodynamically the most restrictive. The finding of such a condition would greatly simplify the application of the stability criteria since only one condition could then be considered, instead of m - 1. In Ref. 1, coherency strain energy terms were neglected, thus restricting the applications of the treatment to solutions where they are negligible, such as liquid alloys. In the following study the same assumption will be made. To generalize the treatment to systems where the strain energy terms are sizable, the reader is referred to Cahn&apos;s classical article on spinodal decomposition.2 Let us designate by Gij the second derivative of the Gibbs free energy with respect to the number of moles ni and n j. There are several equivalent sets of m — 1 stability conditions.&apos; The one considered here expresses that the successive diagonal determinants of order 1, 2, ... m — 1, associated with the symmetric Gij matrix (for 2 5 i, j 5 m) are positive.&apos; For a binary solution 1-2, the condition for stability is: O(u=G22^0 [1] For a ternary system 1-2-3, the condition [I.] is re- tained (the value of G22 will differ, of course, according to the concentration of 3) and another condition is introduced: £>(21 = G22G33 - Gl3 ^ 0 [2] In a composition diagram, these two conditions define two domains of instability. Starting at a point where the solution is stable (for instance at a point where the solution is very dilute) we gradually change the composition until the condition [I] or [2] is violated. As already noted in the literature, e.g., in the work of Prigogine and Defay,3 it is the boundary of the domain (2) which is first crossed. For if we assume that the boundary of the domain (1) is reached first, at this point G22 = 0 and the second condition is necessarily violated (D(2) = -& 5 0), in contradiction with our original assumption. An exhaustive study of the ternary regular solution case may be found in the work of Meijering.4 Moreover if the boundaries of the two domains have a common point, they also have a common tangent. For if the two lines were to cross each other as is illustrated in Fig. 1(a) any point M in the line QP would be such that £> = 0 and 0"&apos; > 0 which, as shown above, are incompatible results. Thus, the two lines must be tangent at their common point Q as illustrated in the example of Fig. l(b). The reasoning of Fig. l(a) implies that the point Q is not a "singular" point for either boundary line. This singularity may be of two types. First, the lines meet without crossing each other and without being tangent. Second, the tangent at Q for D"&apos; or 0"&apos; is not single-valued. Other types of singularity are unlikely because of the usual analytical forms of D"&apos; and 0"&apos;. The exception to the common tangent requirement due to the first type of singularity was pointed out by John Morral;5 it occurs when the common point, Q&apos; or (3" in Fig. l(b), is located at a boundary of the composition diagram, e.g., at the line X3 = 0. It may also be noted that at the common nonsingular point Q of D(1) and D(2), Fig. 1(b), G23 is necessarily equal to zero, whereas at a point such as Q&apos; or Q", this conclusion is no longer valid because the product G22G33 is now indefinite (of the form 0. a). The exception to the common tangent requirement due to the second type of singularity occurs when two branches of the same boundary line intersect, for example when D(1)or D(2) decomposes into a product of functions, at a point which belongs to the boundary of the other condition. It is possible to show by a simple analytical calculation that, in this case, if Q is a singular point of D(1), then it is necessarily a singular point of D(2), and that the reciprocal is true except if G33 = 0 at Q. For the present article, however, more elaboration on these singularities appears to be unwarranted. To generalize the previous results to an m -component system, we use the mathematical theorem stating that if the diagonal determinant D(r) = 0, then
