AT THE New York meeting of the Institute of Metals Division in February, 1927, Jeffries and Tarasov presented a paper on Tungsten and Thoria,1 in which the experimental facts were interpreted in accordance with the prevailing point of view that the thorium is present as the oxide, thoria. In discussing that paper the writer of this article stated that his own investigations, which had been unavailable to Messrs. Jeffries and Tarasov, showed that the so-called "thoriated" tungsten filament failed to disclose any sign of the oxide when subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis, but did give plenty of evidence of the presence of metallic thorium and, in certain cases, of a material believed to bean alloy of tungsten in thorium. Since these results were completely at variance with the results reported in the paper under discussion and with other papers which had preceded it from time to time in the past, it was felt that further discussion should be withheld until the new evidence could be presented adequately. Arrangements were therefore made to present that evidence at this meeting. MATERIAL EXAMINED The material examined was high-emission filament such as is used in radio tubes, supposed to contain about 0.75 per cent. thoria. The actual analysis was not stated.

This article is not intended to be a technical discussion of that act by title, subtitle, section, or supplement, nor an analysis of inter- dependent sections of the various acts over many years woven on the fiscal loom f our Congressional machine. Such a discussion would require the spinning of a web of words too long for patience. Yet ,a general statement of the underlying plan of the 1936 Act, so far as it affects dividend policies, is perhaps useful.

This paper describes the analytical characteristics of Western subbituminous coal and the manner in which these characteristics apply to their use in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares these characteristics with those of typical Midwestern coal and Eastern bituminous coal. The paper also reviews in detail the design considerations that must receive attention when various blends of these three coals, or any combinations thereof, are planned to be used. This research paper describes variations in analytical and utilization characteristics when coals from different origins are blended in order to achieve a predetermined sulfur content for the purpose of predicting sulfur oxides emissions as they affect environmental regulations and the resulting alterations in utilization characteristics such blending would cause, and how such blends of coal would affect a utility-sized steam generator.

Largest and most important of the milling plants under construction during the year is the Morenci plant of the Phelps Dodge Corp., in Arizona, where plans are being rushed for production in 1942. Grate mills will be used for fine-grinding, and in the pilot plant, classifiers of the spiral type have the preference for the closed- circuit work. The flotation units will be chiefly of the pneumatic type, with some mechanical units as auxiliaries. The Fagergren, Pan American, and Agitair machines were left in the competition as the year closed. If the absence of European markets for finished products has dislocated the mining industry, fortunately the lack of raw materials required in the beneficiation of ores has not been serious. except possibly as to the inability to import flint grinding pebbles. Some of the less important gold mines still use pebbles for grinding as is also the practice in the comminution of nonmetallics used in various industries. Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (water box) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 % reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.

The occurrence of iron ore deposits in the State of Western Australia has been known at least since the 1930's,3 but the true significance of the deposits has only come to light within the past four years. Although they are widely distributed throughout the State, it is now known that more than 90% of the available iron ore reserves are located in the "Hamersley Iron Province". Western Australia may well contain the world's largest known reserves of iron ore. Recent reports place this reserve at 15 billion tons and an even higher figure may appear in the future. LOCATION, CULTURE AND COMMUNICATIONS It is difficult to comprehend the immense size of Western Australia (Fig. 1). The State occupies almost one million sq miles and it is more than 2000 miles from north to south. More specifically, it stretches from the 14th to the 35th parallel of latitude south. The Ophthalmia Region in the Hamersley Iron Province is barely halfway up the long dimension of the State. Nevertheless, the region is 800 miles north of Perth, a distance comparable to that from New York to Chicago or to that from Chicago to New Orleans. The Hamersley Iron Province (so named in 1963 to distinguish it from the Pilbara mineral district adjacent to it on the north) covers an area of approximately 30,000 sq miles in the northwestern part of the State. It extends in a roughly oval form from the Indian Ocean to the Gibson Desert of the interior, a distance of about 300 miles. With the exception of the small coastal towns of Onslow, Roebourne and Port Hedland and a few other communities such as the asbestos-mining town of Wittenoom, the region is very sparsely populated. Sheep and cattle stations are scattered thfough the region and these and the main towns are connected by truck tracks and a few main highways. THE purpose of this investigation was to prepare high-purity iron-carbon alloys, to determine as precisely as possible the A3(GOS), the Acm(SE), and the A1(PSK) transformation temperatures in the meta-stable iron-iron carbide system (up to 1.4 per cent C), and to study the influence of carefully controlled and constant rates of heating and cooling (1/8 to 2° C. per minute) upon the transformation temperature and upon the resulting microstructure. Apart from the general metallurgical importance attending the completion of such a task, it will be noted that highly precise transformation temperatures are of interest and importance in the thermodynamic study of this system1. Several determinations of the iron-iron carbide diagram have been made. These suffer generally from the low purity of the alloys used, and from the application of methods of investigation of low sensitivity. Attempts to compare and weight the many data available in an effort to construct as accurate a diagram as possible have, in the main, been unsuccessful. In general, the wide differences in the results of different workers, the lack of complete analytical data, the omission of important details relating to the heat-treatment of the alloys, and the meager description of the methods of investigation applied, render such a process of averaging nearly meaningless. It may be seen from the summaries by Epstein2 and Körber and Oelsen1 that variations as great as 30° C. exist in the reported data on the A3 temperatures in iron-carbon alloys. For-tunately, the A3 temperature in pure iron is now known to be 910° C. ± 1° C.3 The best recent work on iron-carbon alloys is that of Esser4 on hypoeutectoid steels and that of Sato' on both hypoeutectoid and hyper-eutectoid steels.

NOT only has the demonstration of progress in all fields of science been characteristic of the Chicago "Century of Progress," but the manner in which the fundamentals of these sciences have been displayed captivated the visitor's eye and ear at the same time. The average individual is interested most in progress which concerns his every-day life. He is fairly well educated in medicine, biology and certain aspects of physics. But how raw materials and chiefly minerals occur, how they are located, taken out of the ground and refined, is something which appears to be more remote from the every-day line of interest, and about which, therefore, the public knows comparatively little. This is particularly true of the oil industry, although it ranks in size second only to agriculture in the United States. In appreciation of the tremendous educational value which a complete exhibit on all phases of the mineral industries would have, both mining and metallurgical as well as oil inter¬ests took steps early to make these exhibits at Chicago a reality. The board of directors of the A. I. M. E. authorized an advisory committee to the Museum of Science and Industry early in 1932. It is divided into four subcommittees - for geology and petroleum, for metal mining, for coal mining, and for metallurgy respectively. The entire committee held its first meeting in Chicago on April 11 and 12, 1932, to advise with the Museum's officials and experts about the most advantageous arrangement of the minerals industries' and geology exhibits.

Cobalt sulfate solutions containing ammonium acetate and chloroplatinic acid were reduced by hydrogen in a pyrex-glass lined autoclave in the temperature range of 170o to 232°C and hydrogen partial pressure range of 115 to 830 psia. The reduction rate was directly proportional to the hydrogen partial pressure and surface area of the pyrex glass and was independent of the quantity of chloroplatinic acid added initially. Experiments involving the variation of the relative concentration of ammonium acetate indicated that the reducible cobalt complex was probably the diacetate complex of cobalt, Co(AC)4H20, or a new mononcetate complex Co Ac, which was in solubility equilibrium with a pink precipitate of CO(AC)-4HzO. THE reaction in which a metal is dissolved by an acid to produce gaseous hydrogen and a salt solution was discovered early in the history of chemistry. In 1859 Beketoff found experimentally that this reaction could be reversed; i.e., a salt solution could be reduced by gaseous hydrogen to produce a metal and an acid. A review of work done on this phenomenon since that time may be found elsewhere., The hydrogen reduction of a cobalt salt solution is facilitated by complexing the cobalt ion. An ammonia complex of cobalt has been reduced commercially in the recovery of cobalt metal. A new reducible complex of cobalt was discovered5 when it was found that a co-baltous sulfate solution containing ammonium acetate could be reduced by hydrogen at temperatures in the region of 200°C. When a cobalt sulfate-ammonium acetate solution was heated to a temperature below its normal boiling point, a violet color became apparent, indicating complex formation. The nature of this complex was investigated5 by the addition of NH4Ac to a CoSO4 solution maintained at 85o. During the first additions of NH, Ac, the pH of the solution remained fairly constant at about 5.85. However, as the ratio of NH,Ac to CoSO, approached two, the pH rose and then leveled off at about 6.05. The absorption spectra of a Co(Ac), solution and a CoSO,, NH Ac solution were obtained at 85°C and were compared and found to be the same. These findings suggested that the diacetate complex of cobalt, Co(Ac),.4H20, was formed at 85°C. When a cobalt sulfate-ammonium acetate solution was heated to a temperature above about 165o, a finely divided pink precipitate appeared. The X-ray diffraction pattern of this precipitate indicated that it was Co(Ac), - 4H,O. In addition, it was discovered that when chloroplatinic acid, H,PtCl;, was added initially to the cobalt sulfate-ammonium acetate solution, a faster reduction was obtained. The roles of the solution complex, pink precipitate and chloroplatinic acid in the reduction process were then investigated. APPARATUS The experimental work was carried out in a two-liter stainless-steel autoclave. Adetailed description of the autoclave and the auxiliary equipment used in maintaining constant temperature and pressure may be found elsewhere.= Because the stainless steel was corroded, and also because it acted as a hydrogena-tion catalyst, an all-glass liner was fabricated such that the solution came only into contact with flame-polished pyrex glass. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The solutions used in the experimental work were prepared by dissolving reagent grade chemicals in distilled water. Although variation of the brand of ammonium acetate appeared to have no effect on the experimental results, CoSO, 7H O from the J. T. Baker Chemical Co. of Phillipsburg, N. J.,was found to give faster reductions than that prepared by Allied Chemical and Dye Corp., N. Y. The former was used throughout the course of the experimental work and was weighed up at the outset of each experiment. The ammonium acetate was dissolved to form a 6M stock solution, which was stored under refrigeration. A 10 pct solution of chloroplatinic acid (J. T. Baker Chemical Co.) was diluted to a 1.15 x 1Q2 M stock solution, which was standardized by precipitation of K,PtCl, as outlined by Scott. The appropriate volume of the chloroplatinic acid, H,PtCl,, solution was pipetted into the clean, dry glass liner. This paper generalizes the results of the recent theoretical and experimental investigations on the air-pulsated jigs in Japan. The pulsating mechanism is analyzed as a special vibratory system, and the jigging mechanism as a mass system subjected to the law of hindered settling. The results of investigations on the following items are reviewed: dynamics of the pulsating mechanism; pulsation in a practical TACUB jig development of a new type of air valve; uniform pulsation in a large Baum jig; motion and mobility of bed particles; separating speed in hindered conditions; and standard deviation in practical jigs.

IN the past five years, and without much fanfare, Turkey has emerged as a significant figure in the world mining picture. This has been accomplished by a five-year plan now in its last year. A second five-year plan is already under way, ahead of schedule. It will concentrate even more than the first in developing Turkish mines in order to increase present exports of coal, chrome ore, and copper, and to develop new mineral exports as well. To be fully understand the republicic?s mining program should be considered as something more than merely tapping rich resources in the East along the Aegean Sea, in the North among the mountains descending to the Black Sea, and in the West at the foot of the Taurus Mountains. It should also be viewed in the light of a strong nationalist policy with many aspects of state socialism. Turkey declares frankly that all mineral re- sources belong to the nation and all exploitation should be by the state for the twin purpose of modernizing the state and securing foreign exchange for the state by exports. Accordingly, the principal mines are state-operated and a few lesser enterprises, although not state-owned, have at least been put in the hands of Turkish capital.

A long the mighty Andean Cordillera, there is splendor beyond imagination-in the natural beauty of the mountains and in daring engineering and lavish investment in the mines. This is the story of the great copper mines of Chile and Peru. Each mine has a special quality which has tested the physical and spiritual resources of the founder. In the early days of the older mines, the mining engineer of song and story was more the rule than the exception. He was physically tough, ingenious and a leader of men. In the current political and social environment of Chile and Peru, the foreign contract mining engineer is still needed; but he must be a different type of man. To John J. Selters at Cerro's Rio Blanco, the principal ingredient is still "toughness," but it is "toughness of mind" that is needed. "He probably should be a teacher." The copper mines are not new. They were, almost without exception, worked by Indians (La Exotica might prove the rule), and later by the intrepid Spaniards. Modern mining began after the turn of the century. In Chile, the first of the big ones was the Braden Copper Co. founded on the El Teniente deposit. This development was followed by Chile Exploration Co. at Chuquicamata and Andes Copper at Potrerillos. These properties have been developed over the years by vast expenditures of money and a monumental amount of labor. None was free of technical problems-metallurgy at Chuqui, marginal grade of the old mine at Andes, avalanches and the great fire at El Teniente. The evolution which has brought the established mines of Chile, and the new ones coming on stream, to their present state of development is in reality the work of wonders of input-money, engineering and responsible management in an atmosphere of political stability. Without any one of these, the result would have been failure.

Wollastonite is a calcium metasilicate, with the formula CaSiO3; containing theoretically 48.3 pct CaO and 51.7 pct Si02. It is one of many natural and synthetic silicates with varying CaO/SiO2 ratios, with and without water of crystallization. While it is a very common mineral, deposits of sufficient size and purity to be of commercial interest are unusual. There is only one producer (1958) of wollastonite for industrial use in the United States, Godfrey L. Cabot, Inc. at Willsboro, New York. There has been a small production of surface material for ornamental use from near Blythe, California. Carload tests have been made on California wollastonite for making mineral wool and a commercial plant for this purpose was projected in 1957. Properties Wollastonite is monoclinic and commonly occurs in masses or aggregates of bladed or needle-like crystals. It has a perfect cleavage parallel to the long prismatic axis. It is rather brittle and some types grind easily to a very finely fibrous product, but other types, due to interlacing of fibers, are tough and difficult to grind. Mobs hardness is 4.5 to 5; specific gravity 2.8-2.9; index of refraction 1.616 to 1.631; melting point 1,512°C. Color when pure is a brilliant white, but when less pure it may be gray or brown. Luster is vitreous, transparent to translucent. Common mineral associates are garnet (several varieties), diopside, calcite and quartz. The nature of the mineral impurities determines to a large degree the commercial value of a deposit. At Willsboro, New York, the impurities consist chiefly of iron garnet and iron diopside which are both magnetic and so are easily removable by magnetic separation, yielding a nearly theoretically pure product. Some deposits in California contain calcite and quartz which cannot be removed cheaply, thus limiting market possibilities. Occurrence Wollastonite is a contact metamorphic mineral occurring in most places within or associated with impure limestones. The deposits at Willsboro, New York1,2,3,5 consist of two or more beds dipping 15-50°E and striking NW-SE. The main bed, 30 to 70 ft thick, may be traced on the surface for at least 2 ½ miles. In this belt, the Pre-Cambrian Grenville limestone has been injected and partially replaced by the more liquid portions of an anorthositic magma. Buddington and Whitcomb3 have described the rock as "Mixed gneisses, pyroxenite and garnetiferous gneisses and skarns." Prospecting revealed the wollastonite at ten different places in the belt, overlain in most places by a garnet rock. Diamond drilling has proven several million tons with probable reserves around 15 million tons. Interbedded with the wollastonite are beds of garnet from a few inches to several feet in thickness. In the wollastonite ore itself the chief and almost only associated minerals are garnet (mostly almandite but some andradite and grossularite) with small amounts of green hedenbergite. Inasmuch as the almandite and diopside are magnetic they are easily separated from the wollastonite in high intensity magnetic separators. If grossularite should occur in quantity other means of separation would be needed. Wollastonite has been reported at 35 localities in California12 but only those in the Big Maria and Little Maria Mountains, 16 to 20 miles north of Blythe, Riverside County, are

CERTAIN physical and chemical properties of copper are so intimately related that a change in variation of the physical properties indicates a certain chemical change. The standard specifications of copper of the American Society for Testing Materials are based upon physical characteristics with one exception, namely, the copper contents. Certain phenomena of the surface indicate the adaptability of the metal for forging or rolling. The writer believes that it is much simpler to produce shapes that are metallurgically correct than those that are mechanically satisfactory. The appearance of the surface of the copper when cooled is considered as to its "pitch," or the general contour of the surface, and the "set," or the decail appearance of the surface of the shape. The set of the copper is, in a very large measure, directly related to the pitch; and so intimately are these characteristics connected that they are often used as synonymous terms by the refiner when he is speaking of well-refined copper. Oxygen is often spoken of as a medicine for copper, it being used to regulate the pitch.

WET processes for the extraction of copper from its ores have of late attracted much attention, especially in Europe, where the use of oupriferous iron-pyrites as a' source of sulphur prevails. These processes present an additional interest, when, as is often the case, the copper-ore's to be treated contain one or both of the precious metals, since the complete separation of these from copper, either in the dry or the moist way, is, as is well known, one of the difficult problems of metallurgy. The principal wet processes hitherto in use for the extraction of copper from its ores, may be included under three classes : I. Those in which the copper in snlphuretted ores is rendered soluble in water by calcining them, after a preliminary roasting which removes the greater part of their sulphur, with a portion of common salt, by which the copper is converted into a chloride (Long-maid and Henderson), or with sulphate of soda, by which sulphate of copper is formed (Monnier). Allied to these is the method by which a portion of the copper is got as soluble sulphate by roasting without addition, a process which is sometimes modified and rendered more complete by re-roasting the lixiviated residues with the addition of a portion of raw sulphuretted ore (Bankart). II. Those methods in which free chlorhydric or sulphuric acid is used to dissolve the copper- from oxidized or roasted ores. These, while simple and efficient, are too costly, except in certain localities where chlorhydric acid is a waste product. Related to them is the plan which consists in exposing the oxidized and moistened ores to the slow action of sulphurous acid mixed with air, by which a soluble sulphate of copper is formed. It has been proposed to decompose the solutions of sulphate or chloride of copper by sulphuretted hydrogen, thus separating the copper as sulphide, and using the liberated acid to dissolve fresh portions of oxidized copper. It is, however, the almost universal practice to throw down the copper from its solutions, however obtained, in the metallic state by the use of iron, either scrap-iron or iron-sponge; although in some instances

It seems a specially fitting opportunity to present a paper on the alloys of iron and aluminum at the New York meeting of this Institute, owing to the fact that America has, more than any other country, originated and developed the manufacture of cheap aluminum. The Cowles, Castner, and Hall systems have all originated in the ever-busy brain of our cousin across the water. The problem of cheaply producing this valuable metal has been a difficult one, but to the writer it seems that the more arduous the task the greater the delight with which our American friend attempts to overcome the difficulties surrounding it, and the more vim he throws into the work. Another and equally striking proof of this is to be found in the recent appearance of the already wellknown remarkable work, The Mefallurgy of Steel, by Mr. H. M. Howe, of the Institute of Technology, Boston, Mass. It is to be hopel that this Institute will not be slow to recognize by some special mark its appreciation of this signally valuable and original work. The writer has been led to describe the following experiments, believing that so far no full and exact report has yet been presented to this Institute as to the effect of aluminum alloyed or combined with the metal iron. It has been a special object to make the material as far as possible a true alloy or combination of aluminum and iron, with as small quantities as possible of other disturbing ingredients, such as silicon, manganese, etc. In the material described in these experiments, the total amounts of other elements present (sulphur and phosphorus being disregarded as present in such small quantities) do not exceed about 0.5 per cent. Such material may therefore be probably taken as fairly illustrative of the effect of the metal aluminum upon iron. Since completing the experiments the writer
