THE essentials of the electrolytic zinc process, as now used in commercial plants, date back to work done by Letrange in 1881. He used sulfuric acid to leach roasted sulfide and ,oxide ores, purified his solution very much as we do now, and electrolyzed the purified zinc sulfate solution. Ten years later Hoepfner developed a process using chloride solutions, and built three plants. One in England operated until 1924 in one of the works now merged in the Imperial Chemical , Industries, Ltd. Ashcroft built a plant in 1898 in the Broken Hill district of Australia. He used both chloride and sulfate solutions.. While his work failed, the aid his published results have been to later workers has made him an outstanding contributor to the de- velopment of the electrolytic zinc process. A good deal of work was done in the following years, aiming to electrolyze zinc chloride solutions and fused zinc chloride. Quite a bit of work on sulfate solutions was also done in the last years before the war. With the outbreak of the war, metal demand and rise in metal prices provided the stimulus which resulted in the remarkably rapid commercial development of electrolytic zinc. In this last period of development, all the work brought to commercial fruition has been with sulfate solutions. The high-density process, or the Tainton process, is used, as you know, in the Sullivan electrolytic zinc plant at Kellogg, Idaho, and will be used in the Evans- Wallower plant now being built at East St. Louis. The low-density process is used by the other plants now operating in the United States and other countries. There are now in operation and under construction four electrolytic zinc plants in the United States, two in Canada, two in Italy and one each in Australia, Rhodesia, Poland, Norway and Germany.

IT IS usually assumed that chemical specifications are sufficient for steel to be used for case carburizing, and if the steel analyzes within the ordinary limits specified for steel for this purpose, no difficulty traceable to the steel used should be encountered in obtaining satisfactory results in the case carburizing and hardening. Much work has been done to determine the effect of various alloying elements on the rate of carbon penetration, etc. but, to our knowledge, little if anything has been published in regard to the effect of the quality of the steel on the final results in the hardening of case-carburized steel parts. The writers believe that the structure of the case both before and after quenching is greatly affected by the actual condition of the steel itself as made, and that for good results in the case-carburizing and hardening departments, the steel should be of the best possible quality as regards non-metallic impurities. It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the presence of excess dissolved oxides in the steel, as made in the melting furnace, affects permanently the results obtained in carburizing and hardening and that it is possible that the presence of dissolved oxide can result in total unfitness of low-carbon steel for, case hardening purposes. When races and rolls for roller bearings are made from a low-carbon steel, case carburized and hardened, it is of primary importance that the results of this treatment be of the highest quality. It is necessary, therefore, that in the case-carburizing work each detail be rigorously checked to avoid any defects which would cause the loss of much time and material. The case carburizing with which this paper deals was done in under-fired oil furnaces. The temperature of each furnace is controlled by means of a platinum platinum-rhodium thermocouple, in connection with a potentiometer indicator and potentiometer recorder. The temperature of each furnace is registered every 15 min. by an operator, who is continually checked by the automatic recorders.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) . PRIOR to 1908 the oil production in the State of California, had been almost entirely a heavy fuel, oil, with a high flash point, hut changed within a-short period to a large percentage of refining oil with a low flash, by reason of the coming in of the Santa Maria field, the Midway field, and the increased production of the Fullerton field. AN interesting study of the application of air-, conditioning to the problem of mine ventilation and cooling can be found on the Witwatersrand in South Africa. Here there are a large number of deep mines in a relatively small area. Due to the nature of the reef, many mines are working at a depth of 6000 ft. and some have gone down to 8000 and 9000 ft. below the surface. At such depths, even in a country geologically as old as Africa, the virgin rock temperature approaches 110°F. The flow of heat from the- rock to the ventilation air is tremendous though the shaft or drift may have been open to ventilation for some years. In addition, there is the heat produced by machinery, lights, and men at work and the heat of adiabatic compression of air introduced into the mine. The difference in atmosphere pressure between the collar of a shaft and a level 6000 ft. below is nearly 3lb. per sq. in., resulting in an increase in heat content of nearly four B.T.U. per pound of air delivered to the mine at surface. Further the exclusive use of wet mining to reduce the incidence of miner?s phthisis increases the latent- heat content of the air.

Drilling and blasting 12-in. blastholes started about the middle of 1946 and has worked out so well that about one half of the blasting, formerly done with 9-in. holes, is now done with 12-in. holes. In most of this work the harder benches were chosen for the 12-in. size because these were the areas where the greatest difficulty was encountered in thorough fragmentation. At the start of this experimental work a 42-T Bucyrus- Erie churn drill was available whereas all other blasthole drilling was being done with 29-T rigs. The large drill was first equipped with a standard 9-in. string of tools but it could not drill quite as fast as the 29-T drills. How- ever, when the weight of the string was increased about 700 lb, or to a total weight of about 3500 lb, it was found that the 42-T exceeded the drilling speed of the 29-T by about 25 per cent. When a 12-in. bit was substituted for the 9-in. bit the 42-T rig again dropped behind the drill- ing rate of the 29-T rigs. At this stage of the experiment the 42-T was using a 12-in. bit with detachable points and the total weight of the string of tools was about 3800 lb. It took longer to change the drill points than it did the regulation bit and this accounted for some of the slower drilling rate. When a heavier stem and standard construction 12-in. bits were used it was found that the 42-T could drill a 12-in. hole slightly faster than a 29-T could drill a 9-in. hole even in the hardest rock in the pit.

IN 1949 an orebody containing some 10 billion lb of recoverable rare earth metals was discovered in the Mountain Pass district of San Bernardino County, California.' The following year Molybdenum Corp. of America purchased a number of claims at the deposit and a mill on the property which had been constructed to process the district's gold ores. Average composition of ore from the San Bernardino deposit is less than 0.1 pct Tho2, 25 to 35 pct calcite, 10 pct rare earth oxides, 15 to 20 pct silica, and 30 to 40 pct barite.' Rare earth content of the ore analyzes 50.7 pct CeO2, 4.2 pct Pr6O11, 11.7 pct Nd2O3;, 1.3 pct Sm2O3,, and 34.3 pct La2O3 and others.' By floating the barite and depressing the bastna-site, Molybdenum Corp. of America produced a concentrate that contained 60 to 70 pct rare earth oxides. More than 25 pct of the rare earths, however, was lost in flotation. It seemed likely that a more economical method could be found. At the present time most of the rare earths in the concentrates are converted to rare earth chlorides, which are either fed to ion exchange columns for separation of the individual rare earths or reduced to misch metal. Current investigation shows that solvent extraction may achieve this separation more economically than ion exchange. The study reported here was undertaken to develop an economical method of preparing a pure rare earth nitrate mixture from California bastnasite ore. Results indicated that more than 98 pct of the rare earths could be recovered. Several possibilities were considered for processing bastnasite ore, but only the method outlined in Fig. 1 was investigated. This involved leaching the calcined ore with nitric acid. The nitric acid process is discussed under the following headings: 1) calcination of the ore, 2) leaching of calcine, 3) filtration studies, 4) solvent extraction, and 5) nitric acid recovery. Calcination: Since California bastnasite ore contains 25 to 35 pct calcite and about 10 pct bastnasite, calcination was needed to reduce the violence of reaction with nitric acid. Weight losses of 26 to 30 pct were obtained by calcining the ore at 900°C for I hr or at 800°C for 4 hr. Longer periods resulted in no further weight loss. IN 1930, Taggart, Taylor and Knoll1found that addition of various electrolytes to suspensions of ground minerals resulted in the stopping or starting of Brownian movement of the suspended particles. On the basis of the many new facts found, they rejected the "classical "[t] theory of Brownian movement and proposed an "ionization" theory. This new theory was further supported in later publications by Taggart.3,4 The acceptance of the ionization theory by men in the field of flotation may be judged by the mention given this theory in Gaudin's "Principles of Mineral Dressing,"5 Wark's "Principles of Flotation,"6 as well as in a recent paper by Fitt, Thomas and Taggart.7 The proponents of the ionization theory have gone further than the mere statement of the new theory. A parallelism between the Brownian movement of mineral particles and their behavior in flotation was reported.1,3,4 Likewise, the correlation between flocculation-dispersion of mineral particles and the Brownian movement of these particles has been investigated.7 Bankoff15 has suggested that "slime-coating" can also be directly correlated with the Brownian movement of the slime particles. In each of the instances mentioned it is the ionization theory of Brownian movement that has been used to "explain" the correlations that were found. The essential conflict between the kinetic theory and the ionization theory can be understood best by a brief description of each. The kinetic theory* proposes that Brownian movement is caused by the impacts of liquid molecules against the solid particles. At any instant of time, the molecular impacts on all sides of the solid particle will not balance, and the particle will receive a push in some direction. According to this theory, all particles suspended in a liquid are in Brownian movement. However, if the particle is very large, the impacts on all sides will very nearly balance and the motion will not be noticeable. Another factor, besides the size of the particle, that affects the magnitude of the Brownian movement is the viscosity of the liquid-the greater the viscosity, the less the displacement of particles by Brownian movement. This theory has been verified experimentally by measurement of the velocity of Brownian movement, and by measurement of the compacting of suspensoid particles under the influence of gravity.2 The originators of the ionization theory found that the addition of various electrolytes to slime pulps caused cessation or commencement of Brownian movement, depending upon the chemical nature of the particle and the electrolyte. THERE have been many attempts to prove that platinum was known to the ancients, but since no traces of the metal have been found in the relics of early times, it must be concluded that it was not known to them. As far as records go, it was actually first discovered in the 16th century in a Spanish mine on the Pinto River in South America; from which source it received its name of Platina del Pinto (little silver from the Pinto). It was more or less of a rarity and was a subject of interest to a few chemists only, until the year 1822 when the metal was first discovered in Russia. In 1819 there were noticed in the washings of the gold sands of the southern part of the Ural Mountains, grains of a heavy white substance, but it was not until three years later that this substance was found to contain platinum. While at first the amounts of platinum brought from the Urals were meager, prospecting soon disclosed rich deposits extending over a considerable area, and nuggets from 10 to 20 lb. were by no means rare. This discovery assured to chemists an ample supply of platinum for their crucibles, etc. The ore is now found in various parts of the world but the richest deposits are still found in the Ural Mountains. The platinum of commerce is obtained entirely from alluvial deposits at depths varying from 6 to 40 ft. The sand and gravel of former river beds are subjected to a series of screenings and washings to effect the separation of the ore. Actually, probably all gold-bearing gravel beds of the world contain platinum, and it is more than likely that large quantities of platinum ore have been thrown away with the black sand washings from gold placer deposits. This is especially true of the alluvial deposits of the Pacific Coast in California and Oregon. Platinum ore is usually found in the form of rounded or flattened grains of "sand," and occasionally in irregular lumps of the size of peas. Large nuggets are very rare. The ore has a metallic luster and is distinguished by its steel gray color, but shows light gray streak when rubbed on a hard white surface; it has a high specific gravity, 16 to 19; is infusible in the hottest blast furnaces, and insoluble in any single acid. CREATION of a "committee on promotion of student interest in coal mining" has an encouraging implication for the coal industry. It is indicative that mining men, both in the field and in the educational centers, realize that the problems of the industry require the best talent available. Young men are being invited into coal on the premise that it needs them, that it offers opportunity for creative work and the realization of their objectives. In initiating a movement which purports to meet the objectives of any young man who spends four or five years of his life in college, the industry does so with a full realization of its obligations.

Delving into the nature of the physical world, they break down a supposedly indivisible element, hydrogen. Not content with terrestrial problems, they peer back along the cosmic ray into iaterstellar space, glimpsing forces that are, apparently, still busy with the task of atom-making. Mastering and organizing the material and physical, they advance steadily toward that borderland of science where the concept of matter itself seems abandoned, and force is the substance left.

AS a rule the thoughts of engineers are more often directed toward the mechanical and physical conditions of mining practice than they are toward the disposition and the marketing of the product. This, I think, has been true of the coal industry to the present time not only among the engineering force but also generally true of operators. There has been a tendency to place the sales department in a rather secondary position; for a great many years there was a greater demand for coal than the supply would meet, so it was only necessary to increase production: either by expansion of operating mines, or opening new mines of greater capacity. While the production of coal is still a highly important phase of the industry, its enormous development throughout the country, the great advance in fuel, efficiency and economy, and the discovery of new reserves of competitive fuels have combined to create a buyers' market and force the present-day attention upon merchandising in modern ways. A buyers' market has a natural tendency to develop the keenest competition, frequently unscrupulous and nearly always profit-wrecking. Under such conditions bad practices are bound to grow and to extend until the industry is wrecked, or until wiser heads get together to reduce or eliminate unfair methods of competition. This is not so recent a condition as one might believe.

IT is with sincere appreciation and a deep sense of responsibility that I accept the honor of delivering the Howe Memorial Lecture. In our time metallurgical research has delved into phenomena ever more complex in character, so that much of this work must be done by organized teams. We, of the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories and the Electro Metallurgical Co., are truly a team and the lecture which is to follow is due largely to a few of the outstanding members of that team here cited and well known to you in their own right: John Lamont, whose work deserves special recognition, Walter Crafts, William Forgeng, William Binder, Robert Fowler, and David Swan. Thus it is a fitting pleasure to accept this honor for the research institution which I represent. Henry Marion Howe was truly inspirational and his breadth of view was such that he could use either the method of rigid proof or implied mechanism to further the broad understanding. But perhaps his outstanding characteristic was his sound judgment and his ability to weigh observations. The following is replete with observations and judgment as to their implication. We would like to feel that it is the type of dissertation which Howe, himself, would have enjoyed. Chromium carbides in stainless steel have, in a sense, been a key to the progress of the stainless steel industry. Brearley's first stainless steel, containing approximately 0.30 pct C, was successful because it differed from previous Fe-Cr alloys in that the carbides were present in such amount and form as to provide the stainless and cutting properties. Again, the 12 pct Cr die steels with a carbon content of 1.5 pct or more achieved their properties by virtue of the form and distribution of the chromium carbides. In the straight chromium steels with from 12 to 25 pct Cr, chromium carbide amount and distribution are once more the determinants with respect to physical properties and corrosion resistance. In each of the cases just cited the role of the carbide is in essence similar to that of iron carbide in carbon steel and this story is so well known that we need not dwell on it. In the austenitic stainless steels, the chromium carbide plays only a minor positive role with respect to mechanical properties, and for corrosion resistance the objective is to achieve maximum homogeneity. Thus the tendency has been to ever lower the carbon and correlatively the chromium carbide content of the austenitic steels. Today stainless steels with carbon less than 0.03 pct are beginning to find their true place, and this is being aided in major degree by our Company's introduction of a new type of ferrochromium having negligible carbon. The role of carbon in these austenitic steels has long been recognized, and a truly enormous amount of research has been devoted to the subject. Much has been learned about corrosion resistance, but the attack on the problem from the point of view of carbide precipitation and the nature thereof has left much to be understood. Because of its fundamental importance to the future of stainless steels, further study of the mechanism of carbide formation in austenitic steels is of interest. In the 18-8 Cr-Ni steels, which are typical of the austenitic class of steel, carbon is soluble in the aus-tenite to the extent of approximately 0.15 pct at 1832°F (1000°C). The solubility becomes less with decreasing temperature, so that at 1652°F (900°C) the solubility limit is approximately 0.06 pct, at 1472°F (800°C) it is about 0.03 pct, and at 932°F (500°C) it is approximately 0.01 pct. Obviously this is the ideal situation for the classical precipitation phenomenon. It is true that, in a sense, 18-8 austenite resulting from annealing is in a metastable state, and the phenomenon of ferritic precipitation from this austenite should be considered. However, in a so-called fully austenitic 18-8 steel this is secondary with respect to the carbides and can be neglected. A wide variety of chromium carbides is known. Only one chromium carbide, Cr,,C,,, frequently referred to as Cr,C, has been found in unmodified low carbon 18-8 steel. This, fortunately, simplifies the study of the precipitation phenomena. For this study an A.I.S.I. type 304 stainless steel of commercial quality was selected. Analysis showed C 0.07 pct, Mn 0.49 pct, Si 0.33 pct, Ni 9.34 pct, Cr 18.91 pct, and N 0.033 pct. As expected with this composition the steel was homogeneous after annealing except for a few pools of ferrite, which were disregarded in that their location was not coincident with subsequent carbide precipitation areas. On corrosion testing the steel was normal and typical of good commercial quality. Specimens 1/2xlx4 in. were annealed and subjected to precipitation heat treatment for 100 hr at 100" temperature intervals from 1000° to 1500°F and for ten selected intervals ranging from 5 min to 64 hr at 1300°F. The Ozark Lead Company operating facilities are located in Reynolds County at the south end of the "New Lead Belt" of southeast Missouri. Development of this wholly owned subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation started in May 1964, with a six foot diameter by 1250 foot deep steel lined shaft. A 20-foot diameter, 1480 foot deep, concrete lined production shaft was collared in March 1968. Production from the facilities began that month and has reached a present average of approximately 6000 tons per day. This paper describes the fully automatic system used to hoist the lead-zinc ore from a depth of 1420 feet to the surface crushing and concentrating facilities, as well as the man and materials hoisting system which allows the lowering of large equipment into the mine. MINING Galena, sphalerite and some copper minerals are found in several mineralized zones of the relatively flat lying dolomite of the "Bonneterre formation". The mineable ore zones vary from 10 feet to 110 feet thick, from 200 feet to 1200 feet wide, and several thousands of feet on strike. Two-boom diesel-hydraulic jumbos equipped with rotary percussion drills are used for both development and production. The jumbos are used principally to open the room and pillar stopes, and a track mounted down hole drill is used to bench in areas where the ore thickness warrants. Explosives used are ANFO, dynamite, and water-jell which are detonated by electric blasting caps. Broken ore (and waste) is hauled by rubber tired transports to chuted transfer raises. Approximately every 500 feet, these raises connect the orebody to the 15 foot by 28 foot train haulage level below. Two twenty ton diesel-hydraulic locomotives haul 160 tons per trip to storage pockets which have a total storage of 1500 tons of material. From these pockets the material is fed over a 6 foot by 20 foot mechanical vibrating feeder which includes one 4 foot by 6 foot grizzly section to a 48 inch by 60 inch jaw crusher. The grizzly and crusher products are transferred horizontally 45 feet on a 48 inch conveyor belt, to one of two 750 ton storage pockets. The material can flow unimpeded into one pocket or be deflected into the second pocket by a movable rock filled hopper. LOADING POCKET The material in each storage pocket is controlled by six lengths of ship anchor chain. The upper end of the 20 foot chain is anchored behind a brow in the pocket, while the lower ends are joined by a header. The lower ends of the chains are raised by two electric powered marine barge winches using 3/4 inch cables. The crusher operator controls the raising and lowering of these chains from a console in the crusher station. The upper and lower travel of the chains is controlled by cams and limit switches on the winch drive. The winches are located within 5 feet of the shaft, and shaft water continually causes problems with the electric components. A malfunction in the upper travel switch will cause the winch to pull the chains into the cable sheave (breaking the cable or sheave), while the lower switch causes the winch to unwind too much rope. Serious consideration is being given to changing the electric motors to pneumatic, since pneumatic motors will eliminate the need of any electrics at the winches. The winches can be "bottomed out" against the sheave without damage to the cable or sheave when raising the chains, and can be allowed to "free wheel" to lower the chains.
