MOST of us are far .from home, and yet our Japanese hosts- have made us feel very much at home. Here in the Orient we engineers are .learning a new meaning for the word "orientation"- hereafter that engineering term will be a synonym for gracious hospitality, and "to orient" will mean to turn a whole country over to the World Engineering Congress. Mere geographic distance is no longer able to separate nations, for the conquest of distance is one of the triumphs of 'modern engineering. We of the Americas are fortunate in the position of our continents: with their shores lapped by the waves of two oceans, we face' two great civilizations, the' Occidental and the Oriental, and thus we can share the intellectual resources of these two older cultures.

ON the morning of Monday, Nov. 9, 1936, two motorcycles, with sirens screeching, - escorted a procession of 70 automobiles from the Colonia Railway Station in Mexico City to the Hotel Geneve. Riding in' the cars were just over 200 visitors- members of the A.I.M.E. and their guests. They had come, via St. Louis, in two special trains from 24 different states for the 146th General Meeting of the Institute. During the morning they and 200 others, who had come from the United States by automobile or from various cities and mining camps in Mexico, duly registered with !efficient Mme. Irma Ordoiiez de Obregon and her assistants. Then started a week of strenuous but delightful activity that will never be forgotten by the participants. WHEN lead production began to recede from the peak productions of 1929 many plants took advantage of the curtailed operations to make necessary improvements and repairs about the plant. There followed a period of adjustment to synchronize production and demand, which merged in the present period of marking time. The lead smelting and refining industry has produced little that is new during the past year except in what might be called makeshifts, which have been introduced to make operation at fractional capacity profitable. The engineer and the conservationist agree that effective water drive is the desirable reservoir production mechanism. Water drive may result either from the expansion of edge water, the reservoir water bordering an oil pool, or from the artesian flow of edge water from the outcrop. Thus, the extent of the reservoir has an important bearing upon both the rate and the ultimate quantity of water influx to an oil pool. Lens-type reservoirs are generally recognizable, but the complete structure of the more important domal types, having possible limitations from crestal and synclinal faulting, is not well understood. The delineation from cores, electrical logs and exploitation phenomena of the crestal portions of reservoirs is increasingly exact. This paper suggests that inference from these factual pictures, combined with the scattered well and geophysical data of the synclines and with consideration of the dynamics of structural formation, may be applied to solving the complete geologic structure. Since faulting on the domes and in the synclines may effectively seal and thus limit the size of a reservoir and bar additional water influx, consideration of geologic structure and its possible effects is essential to complete analysis and prediction of reservoir performance. Introduction Implicit in reservoir studies is the fact that the oil must be displaced from the reservoir rock by some other fluid, either gas or water, and this understanding yields the terms descriptive of the major reservoir production mechanisms, gas expansion and water drive' Three recent papers1-2-3 make clear the economic and conservation preeminence of Water drive as a production mechanism; in fact, the title of the latest of these is " Production under Effective Water Drive as a Standard for Conservation Practice." There appears to be an assumption at times among analysts that the effectiveness of a water drive is solely dependent on the rate of oil production; that is, if water drive appears to be insufficient or lacking, a lower oil-recovery rate would increase or reveal it. This assumption might result from the fact that the analysis has been wholly developed during the period of production curtailment; that is, since 1929. The writer takes it that the recurrent phrase in De Golyer's paper,3 "some degree of water drive," is related to this assumption. In California, an extraordinary phrase, "inactive water drive," is rather common and the connotation of uncertainty regarding our knowledge of reservoir performance is evident. Wyckoff2 speaks of the type of reservoir and performance as follows: "In general, reservoirs may be any one or a combination of domal, faulted, lenticular, or stratigraphic traps. Insofar as the dynamic performance of such reservoirs is concerned, the particular type merely determines whether regional flow is symmetrical as in a uniformly developed domal or lenticular type, or one-sided as in many stratigraphic or faulted traps." The age-hardening of Fe-18 to 21 pct Ni marten-sites containing small amounts of titanium, aluminum, copper, or molybdenum has been studied by hardness measurements, transmission electron microscopy, extraction replicas, and X-ray and electron diffraction. Electyon-probe microanaly-sis of the extracted precipitates was also performed. The effects of temperature and composition on the aging kinetics have been studied in detail for Fe-20 pctNi-Ti martensites. All the martensites hardened on aging at 400" to 500 "C with a single aging peak. In the Fe-20 pct Ni-Ti martensites hardening was associated with the formation of a fine dispersion of NisTi. No precipitation was observed in an Fe-21 pct Ni-2.6 pct A1 alloy, although the hardness increased from 327 to 545 Dph during aging at 500°C. Copper was precgitated from an Fe-20 pct Ni-10.7pct Cu alloy, at least during the later stages of age-hardening. Hardening in an Fe-18 pctNi-5pct Mo alloy was associated with the precipitation of an intemzetallic compound tentatively identified as NisMo. The formation of austenite and the recovery of the defect structure of the martensite occur simultaneously with the normal precipitation processes &ring aging of these alloys. THE age-hardening of substitutional iron-base martensites is an important subject for study since age-hardening is one of the principal means of strengthening the substitutional iron-base martensites in precipitation-hardening stainless steels1 and maraging steels.a~4 In contrast to Fe-C martensites, these martensites are relatively soft and ductile in the as-quenched condition, due to the low solid-solution hardening effect of the substitutional elements as compared to carbon. Also, these martensites are hardened by aging at low temperatures in contrast to Fe-C martensites which generally soften on tempering. Titanium and aluminum, singly or in combination, as well as copper and molybdenum, have been the principal alloying additions to stainless steels to obtain an age-hardening reaction.' Ti-A1 or Co-Mo-Ti combinations have been used in the case of maraging steels.3"4 The present work has been confined to a study of the age-hardening characteristics of an Fe-18 to 21 pct Ni martensite to which small amounts of titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum were added in order to study the effects of each alloying element separately. The age-hardening characteristics of these alloys were studied by hardness measurements, transmission electron microscopy, extraction replicas, and X-ray and electron diffraction. Electron-probe micro-analysis of the extracted precipitates was also performed. The types and dispersion of precipitates, the formation of austenite, and the recovery of the defect structure of the martensite all were studied. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys. The compositions of the alloys studied are listed in Table I. The level of 18 to 21 pct Ni was chosen to assure complete transformation to martensite on quenching and is the same nickel level used in maraging steels. The concentrations of titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum were chosen after a study of the and Fe-Ni-MO' ternary diagrams indicated how much of each alloying element could be dissolved in austenite. Alloys with 2 and 4 pct Cu were also studied, but these did not show precipitation hardening at the nickel levels studied and will not be discussed further. The alloys were prepared from electrolytic iron and high-purity* nickel, titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum by vacuum melting of 20-lb heats. These were vacuum-cast into two 8-lb ingots. The ingots were hot-rolled at 1100°C to 1/2-in. plate and subsequently cut into 3/8-in. cubes. The cubes were sealed in evacuated quartz capsules and solution-treated for 16 hr at 1100°C, except for the Fe-20 pct Ni-10.7 pct Cu alloy and Fe-21 pct Ni-2.6 pct A1 alloys which were solution-treated for 16 hr at 1300" and at 1250"C, respectively. MARCH 15-Industry is rapidly snapping back from another coal crisis, other business news is in general favorable and the outlook through the Spring is by most observers considered quite promising. Most industries report comfortable backlogs of unfilled orders, department store sales in recent weeks have equalled in dollars those of the corresponding period last year, retail sales of automobiles show again over the same period a year ago, and new orders for machine tools are at the highest figures since August 1946. Orders for railway freight cars have shown a very encouraging pickup, with a total of 9385 cars in January and the N. Y. Central alone ordering 4500 in February. Construction continues very active. In January new housing starts totaled 80,000 against 50,000 a year ago and the daily average contract awards, according to the Dodge reports, were 57 pct larger. In the first 22 days of February the increase in awards was 27 pct. Lumber orders since Jan. 1 have run 22 pct above last year. All of these favorable factors bolster the opinion that the upturn in industrial output and employment which began last summer has not yet spent itself and that the setback caused by the strikes will be made up when people get back to work. Only in a few lines are there indications that primary production may be outrunning the consumption of finished goods, although inventory build-up would seem to be rather modest as the National Association of Purchasing Agents reported in February that 78 pct of its members were buying for 60 days or less. Industrial prices as a whole show no significant trend despite the continued alarm over both the immediate and the long-term possibility of inflation caused primarily by the government's increasing expenditure and its inability to balance the budget. A recent advance of 1.9 pct in primary market prices is viewed by some people as the surface symptom of renewed inflation, but even so it is more than two years since the alltime high was reached by the daily index of sensitive commodities in November 1947. Over two years have passed since prices received by farmers hit their peak and about a year and a half since all wholesale prices and the consumer price index touched their highest points in August 1948. The decline in the wholesale price index has been almost continuous, interrupted only twice by slight advances in the monthly figures from February to March 1949, and, later in the year, from August to September. Of course, this continued decline in the last half of 1949 largely reflects a downward movement in farm and food prices. Wholesale prices for commodities other than farm and food leveled out after June and now stand only slightly under the June level. Farm products are down by 22 pct from January and by 18.6 pct from August 1948. Food prices are down only slightly less. Consequently, the farm price support program is in serious trouble and has imposed a heavy financial burden on the Treasury. In those commodities other than farm products only building materials, chemicals and textiles have come down as much as the average, while housefurnishings and metals and their products have fallen hardly at all. Glancing away from the domestic front, the results of the British general election indicated a highly inconvenient situation, that public opinion there is so exactly deadlocked as to divest the victors of much ability to make forceful decisions or create significant policy. It is generally considered that another election in the near future would give substantially the same result. The British people are equally divided and the politicians are not likely to precipitate another appeal to the country until there is manifest reason to believe that external and internal circumstances have changed sufficiently to permit one party or the other to obtain a decisive verdict. Because of the lack of a clear mandate steel nationalization will likely lag in Britain. In the meantime there is considerable discussion going on as to whether the European steel industries as a whole are at a disadvantage in world competition with the American industry. An article in the "Statistical Bulletin" for January of the British Iron and Steel Federation takes issue on this point with the authors of the Geneva report, observing that they wrote before devaluation, and this particular conclusion "has been overtaken by events." The "Bulletin" also contends that the statement was in any case incorrect so far as Britain was concerned, and that it was based on scanty and insufficient evidence. To support the rebuttal a detailed and extensive comparison is made of the home prices of certain steel products in Britain and in other countries of the world. The accompanying table gives a selection of the prices published. It sets out the changed position since devaluation and since the recent increases in American steel prices. These are home market prices; no doubt in competitive export business some of the price levels could be brought closer together at need.

This plant, near Marysville, Mont., was planned to treat the ore from the Piegan and Gloster mines, the latter being one of the early and famous producers of the Marysville district. When the mill was closed in 1888, treatment consisted of stamp milling, followed by pans and settlers for pan amalgamation. The extraction was evidently poor, because, a few years later, thousands of tons of tailings were re-treated by the ranchers in the valley below the mill, by the then new cyanide process, and gave a handsome profit. In 1914, the present owners, after laboratory tests and an experimental mill run, decided upon the following treatment: crushing to 40 mesh in cyanide solution, concentration, amalgamation, classification, and cyani-dation of sands by leaching, and of slime by agitation and decantation in charges. The ore averaged about $7 per ton, gold and silver, the ratio of weight being 1 oz. gold to 7.56 oz. silver. The ratio of gold and silver in tailings was 1 oz. Au to 36.6 oz. Ag; the quartz was sharp and sandy, however finely ground, and rather difficult to slime. The mechanical equipment was a No. 5 Symons gyratory crusher; three 10-ft. Lane slow-speed Chilean mills; one Wilfley roughing and one finishing table; one submerged-type Akins classifier; five 26 by 10-ft. fir leaching tanks; one 24 by 7-ft. Dorr thickener; four 14 by 16-ft. Dorr agitators; four 6-compartment double-row zinc-boxes having compartments 18 in. wide, 18 in. deep, and 34 in. long; Johnson zinc lathe; acid and vacuum filter tanks for treating precipitate; roasting furnace; and Case tilting No. 275 crucible furnace for melting precipitate. The mill is driven by electric power supplied by the Montana Power Co. at the following rates, per kw.-hr.: 200 to 300 hp., 0.68 c.; 300 to 500 hp., 0.61 c.; 500 to 750 hp., 0.55 c.; plus $1 per month per installed motor horsepower. The plant as above described was operated from May, 1915, to the end of the year, when an additional Dorr thickener and a 12 by 12-ft. Portland revolving filter were added, increasing the nominal capacity of 100 tons per 24 hr., but not the percentage of extraction. After months of negotiations, the U. S. has agreed to buy between 6000 and 7000 long tons of Bolivian tin now stockpiled at Peruvian and Chilean ports, at $1.175 per lb, f.o.b. South American Ports. Harry A. McDonald of the Reconstruction Finance Corp. signed the contract with Victor Andrade, Bolivian ambassador. The Mercantile Metals and Ore Corp., of New York City, acted as the agent of Bolivia's Banco Minero in negotiating the deal. The contract is a short term one. Throughout the talks, the U. S. refused to make a long term agreement because of the possibility that Bolivia will soon nationalize its mines. The Bolivians desired to sell the U. S. 18,000 tons during a one-year pact. The price agreed upon is roughly the same as with Malayan producers. In the meantime, American Smelting & Refining Co., signed over control of its operations to the Bolivian Government. The formal act of leasing the mines to the Bolivian Government follows the announcement last July by the company that it was closing operations because of high costs. Contract terms were not disclosed.

The Chairman rendered a report on the activities of the Section during the past year and the Treasurer presented a financial report. THE memorable features of American history have been making fast during the last century, and notably so since 1860; and they are by no means confined to political or to any one branch of scientific development. Of all the industrial arts, none show a greater change or a mightier progress than the Bessemer manufacture. And this year, while we are celebrating the first centennial of our national life, we can also celebrate the first decennial of American Bessemer practice. While not forgetting or undervaluing what has been done in other countries, I have thought that a brief history of the introduction and development of the Pneumatic or Bessemer process in America would be of interest. In 1863 the Kelly Pneumatic Process Company was formed and an arrangement entered into with William Kelly, who had taken out letters-patent of the United States, Nos. 16,444 ; 17,628, re¬issued as 505; 18,910, dated January 10th, 1857 ; June 23d, 1857; November 3d, 1857; and December 22d, 1857, respectively. This association was composed of the Cambria Iron Company, E. B. Ward, Park Brothers & Co., Lyon, Shorb & Co., Z. S. Durfee, and, later, Chouteau, Harrison & Valle joined the combination. Not satisfied with possessing the control of the Kelly patent, they sent Mr. Z. S. Durfee to England, to secure for this country Mushet's patent on recarburization, No. 17,389, dated May 26th, 1857, the same having been taken out in England on September 22d, 1856. In this Mr. Durfee was successful. Previous to the application of William Kelly for a patent, Henry Bessemer, of England, had taken out patents dated February 12th, 1856, and August 25th, 1856, in this country. Kelly claimed priority in the discovery of the principles of the process, and the Patent-office allowed his claim by granting him his patents. In the autumn of 1862 Mr. Alexander L. Holley, while in England, was impressed with the importance of Mr. Bessemer's inven¬tion, and so fully foresaw its future, that, upon his return to the United States, he induced Messrs. John A. Griswold and John F. Winslow, of Troy, New York, to join him in endeavoring to possess Bessemer's American patents. Mr. Holley returned to England in

THE hall of the Western Iron and Nail Associations having kindly been placed at the service of the Institute, the opening session was held at 3 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, May 13th, with an attendance of about one hundred and twenty-five members. Mr. William Metcalf, of Pittsburgh, read an address of welcome on behalf of the Local Committee of Arrangements, to which President E. B. Coxe responded. The following papers were then read and discussed : Regenerative Stoves; a Sketch of their History and Notes on their Use, by John M. Hartman, of Philadelphia. Some Curious Phenomena Observed on Making a Test of a Piece of Bessemer Steel, by William Kent, of Pittsburgh. On the Use of Determining Slag Densities in Smelting, by Thomas Macfarlane, of Wyandotte, Michigan. After the reading of these papers each member was presented by the Local Committee with a schedule of excursions, a specially prepared map of Pittsburgh and surroundings, and a directory of industrial works, all tastefully bound, and also with a metal badge bearing the seal of the Institute, to be worn on the excursions. In addition to ten papers (all preprinted) on properties, structure, aid hardenability of, carbon and alloy steels, eight formal papers were presented on one or more phases of steelmaklng, and a symposium on the determination of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel. This last started at 2 p.m. and was going strong with more than a third of the audience still present at 6 p.m.

A LARGE part of the molybdenum produced in Colorado is converted and consumed in the Eastern States. As the raw materials and the power needed for the conversion of the Colorado concentrate are also accessible in the Eastern States, the conversion plant has been installed some 1500 miles east of where the ore is mined and milled. When concentrate was first produced at Climax in 1918, a custom smelter converted the product into ferromolybdenum. By 1924, the Company had decided to produce calcium molybdate and rented a building and installed equipment for that purpose at Langeloth, near Burgettstown, Pa., about thirty miles west of Pittsburgh. For the first few years the plant was a simple one of small capacity. A small hand-rabbled roaster was used, the product of which was made iota calcium molybdate by a conventional method; then an eight hearth mechanically rabbled roaster was installed to increase and speed up production. The output was considerably less than a million pounds of contained molybdenum annually until 1928, when a small part of the produc-

The New London copper mine, about 8 1/2 miles east of Frederick, Md., was visited by the writers for a few hours in the spring of 1909 and the following brief notes on ore specimens collected are presented as a contribution to studies in chalcocite ores. For certain data on the structural and areal geology of this portion of Maryland the writers are under obligation to the unpublished notes and maps of Arthur Keith. The detailed study of the ores is the work of B. S. Butler. The deposit here discussed has many similarities to those of the Virginia district of Virginia and North Carolina, which have been described by Gratonl and Laney,2 except that in the deposits of the New London mine chalcocite is by far the most important ore mineral, while in the Virginia deposits bornite is commonly the most important sulphide. In the New London occurrence calcite is the most important gangue mineral. Field relations The -town of Frederick lies in the center of a narrow belt of limestone ranging in age from Ordovician on the east to Cambrian on the west. This belt is about + mile wide at Noland's Ferry, on the Potomac, and broadens to a width of 3 miles at Frederick. The general direction is east of north. The eastern boundary is, in places, a fault plane along which a series of metamorphic rocks of presumptive pre-Cambrian age have been thrust up. These ancient rocks, for several miles east and west of New London, are phyllites in the main, but closely inter-folded near the New London mine are long, narrow lenses of epidote

TECHNICAL SESSIONS. The first session, held Tuesday evening, Mar. 1, 1910, in the large lecture hall of the Carnegie Institute, was called to order by Harrison W. Craver, Secretary of the Local Committee. Mr. Craver introduced Dr. John A. Brashear, who extended to the members and guests a hearty welcome to the city of Pittsburg, to which David W. THE Institute met on Wednesday evening, May 22d, in the parlor of the Stanton House, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, President, in the chair. The President delivered an introductory address on the Brown Hematite Deposits of the Great Valley, after which the following papers were read and discussed : Note on the Result of an Experiment with the Wheeler Process of Combining Iron and Steel in the Head of a Rail, by W. E. C. Coxe, of Reading, Pa. On the Jenks Corundum Mine, Macon County, N. C., by Dr. R. W. Raymond, of New York City. On Wednesday afternoon, previous to the opening session, the members who had already arrived in Chattanooga, were taken by the Local Committee to the works of the Roane Iron Company, and Chattanooga Iron Company, and then to the top of Lookout Mountain, where, at the request of the members present, Dr. Hunt described the geological and geographical features of the Chattanooga region, with the magnificent panorama spread out before them as a map. On Thursday morning an excursion was made by steamboat down the Tennessee River as far as Shellmound. Here cars were taken to the coal mines of the Dade Coal Company, where the members were courteously received by Mr. E. B. Wells, the Superintendent. After a trip through the mines the party partook of a collation provided by the company. South Pittsburgh, on the Tennessee River, was next visited, where the Southern States Coal, Iron and Land Company have a large blast-furnace plant in the course of erection. After conducting the party through the works, shops, etc., Mr. James Bowron, the manager, entertained the members with graceful hospitality at dinner. The second session was held on Thursday evening for the transaction of business. The President, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, appointed Messrs. W. E. C. Coxe, R. H. Richards, and F. J. Slade, scrutineers, to examine the ballots for officers for the ensuing year.
