Confidence in the strength of the U.S. economic recovery was considerably enhanced by third quarter 1983 profits, which showed a 12.8-percent increase over those in the second quarter (table I). Although the increases were not as great as between the first and second quarter of 1983, profits have grown each quarter since fourth quarter 1982. Both total profits and profits per unit of output increased, which the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) attributes to decreases in labor and nonlabor costs (per unit of output), as well as to moderate price increases. [ ] A number of durable goods sectors, however, continue to show profit declines, especially electrical and non-electrical machinery. Profits in the primary metal industry are still negative, but the economic picture of this industry is improving. Between the second and third quarters of 1983, capacity utilization increased somewhat in primary metal manufacturing and stone and earth mineral mining but did not change at all in metal mining. Capacity utilization in metal materials increased from 47.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 1982 to 64.2 percent in the third quarter of 1983 (table 2).

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree A study into the stability of strike gullies at TauTona mine was to be carried out. In reaching the conclusions to follow, a three-stage process was followed. ?A literature study as well as discussions with management and workers alike to gain their inputs and perceptions. ?An ESH Department survey into the history of transgression from proper mine standard in TauTona strike gullies. Unfortunately records were found to be scarce and obscure and the importance of better inter-departmental recordings cannot be stressed enough. ?An underground survey of 11 pre-selected gullies distributed in both the UCL and LCL reef horizons. This stage is to carry the greatest weight in the points to be brought forward in this report. The process highlighted and ranked the following areas as the most critical role players in the deterioration of strike gullies: ?Poor blasting practice ?Sub-standard siding depth and lead-lags ?Split sets ?Off line gully development ?Adverse geological features. The following has been suggested to the mine to help reduce strike gully instability. ?Where possible, maintain lead-lags below 7 m?else increase the siding depth to suit. ?Decrease the gully width standard to 1.2 m (especially in ?high risk areas?). ?Discourage drillers from drilling side holes in gully face blast pattern. This will allow for time in which tendon support can be kept up to date. ?Ensure split sets are installed 1 m behind the gully face so as to prevent opening up of fractures. ?Utilize the centre split set in the 1:2:1 pattern to maintain the proper gully line. ?When adverse conditions prevail, it is necessary to apply a special support plan not only to the panel face, but also (just as importantly) to the gully as well. Shotcreting of the gully hanging is a suitable long-term consideration for providing the additional a real coverage needed. THE investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at the Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word "Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 percent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy, " or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limit" has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend' test developed by Howard Scott.1 In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

"Current understanding of the mechanisms by which glassy and crystalline thin ribbons are formed in high speed continuous casting processes is considered. A computer model of the combined heat and momentum transfer during melt spinning has been developed. The influence of roll velocity and of heat transfer coefficient (between the melt and the roll) on the temperature and velocity distributions within the melt puddle is analysed and the thickness of the extracted ribbon computed. The relative importance of heat and momentum transfer under different conditions is assessed and differences between the casting of crystalline and amorphous strip highlighted.IntroductionHigh speed continuous casting of thin metallic ribbon and strip is currently of considerable interest both to metal processers and to those studying process mechanisms. The practical interest arises both from the potential economic benefits to be gained from a shorter and more energy-efficient production route and from the ability to obtain extended and uniform thin strip having a metastable microcrystalline or amorphous structure with enhanced or unique properties. The latter arise from the rapid solidification associated with the cooling of very thin sections of melt brought into intimate thermal contact with one or two rapidly moving heat sinks.The principal processes for casting thin strip include free jet, chill-block melt-spinning (GBMS) (1), melt drag (MD) (2), planar flow casting (PFG) (3) and twin-roll casting (TRG) (4). For the first three of these, all essentially variants of melt-spinning, melt flows through a nozzle onto the circumferential surface of a rapidly rotating roll, whereas for TRG the melt passes into the nip between two contra-rotating rolls. We shall be concerned in this paper with the single-roll melt spinning processes only. For these, a puddle is established where the melt contacts the roll surface and the length of this puddle l is a function of the process conditions, notably the circumferential velocity of the roll Us and the volumetric flow rate of the melt Q. The contact time between any point on the roll surface and this puddle, or residence time eR(= l /Us) determines the thickness of ribbon t extracted from the puddle. This thickness, in turn, partly governs the cooling rate T and the amount of undercooling in the melt and thus the microstructure of the solidified ribbon."

Falkie summarized the following formal contribution prepared jointly with Dr R. V. Ramani, describing the work that has been done at the Pennsylvania State University in the development of simulation programs for mine planning over the past 15 years:During the late 50's and early 60's, Monte Carlo simulators were developed to model continuous miner-shuttle car transport systems, track haulage systems, belt conveyor networks, etc. In the mid-60's attention was directed towards deterministic simulation of equipment performance, given the equipment characteristics and the system profile. In the late (10's all these systems (miners, shuttle cars, belts and trains) were integrated together to form a complete coal mine simulator and the program could predict the output potential of the system, given the mining dimensions, method and equipment employed. The actual sequence of coal-cutting operations is entered into the computer through the use of a special programming language which permits any type of mining configuration to be simulated. The simulator is hybrid in nature in that the shuttle cars, trains and belts are simulated deterministically, whereas rate functions with delay frequencies are entered for the continuous mining operations of sumping, shearing, fleeting, cleaning, etc. With suitable manipulation of the data, the program may be applied to all belt or conventional mining sections. Most of these simulators were developed through the assistance of grants from the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and are available from the Coal Research Board of the Commonwealth,"

WORLD production of the three major nonferrous metals, copper, lead, and zinc, in 1939 will aggregate about 6,050;000 tons, compared with the all-time peak of 6,237,944 tons in 1937, and the previous peak of 5,679,442 tons in 1929. The United States will furnish 30.9 per cent of the total compared with 30.4 per cent in 1937 and 41.3 per cent in 1929. Table 1 gives the details of the three metals.

The industrial minerals industry in the Atlanta, Ga., area was studied in order to better understand problems associated with exploiting mineral resources in and near metropolitan areas. A method for delineating the Atlanta urban area and its component parts was developed so that the factors affecting the location of the minerals industry could be viewed mere objectively in the urban context. Major attention is focused on the area's dominant crushed stone subindustry Demographic and socioeconomic analysis of the Atlanta, Ga., area shows that expansion of the metropolis and its environs will probably eliminate potential mineral resources from the mineral resource base in the area, and that the expanding metropolis will be the primary determinant of future mining sites. Competition for land is accentuated to varying degrees by the incompatibility of wining operations with residential and other environmental requirements. Areas of consideration are suggested to provide maximum development of land and resources for greatest economic benefits it minimum social cost. Further research is recommended to determine market locations in urban areas, optimum operating levels for industrial minerals plants, and alternatives to surface mining.

This report presents the results of a study examining the relationship between supervisor characteristics and performance in underground coal mines, The specific objectives of the research include; document tasks performed by first-line supervisors during a normal shift; explain why supervisors carry out their duties as they do: identify salient characteristics of effective first-line supervisors; and formulate criteria for selecting and developing candidate supervisors. To accomplish the study objectives, on-site observation and data collection was carried out at 13 underground mines in Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. One hundred thirty-eight first-line supervisors were observed during a full work-shift and discussions with the supervisors and the mine superintendent were held during the course of the visit. The observational data from the study provide a detailed description of what supervisors to during their shift. The report begins with an introduction discussing the problem being studied and objectives of the research. The literature related to supervisor selection is then reviewed. The following section describes the research design including data collection procedures and statistical methodology used in the study. The next sections present the analysis of mine, section, crew, and supervisor characteristics. The report concludes with a discussion of the results of the study and recommendations concerning supervisor selection and development.

THE solid nonmetallic inclusions present to some extent in all commercial steels have been variously designated. In early references they were usually called slag inclusions, and this terminology is still retained to some extent. On the premise that all nonmetallic matter produced in a metallurgical process is slag, this can be justified. We have come to think of slag, however, in a more restricted sense, and calling these particles slag inclusions is further objectionable because it fosters the erroneous concept that they are actually incorporated portions of furnace slag. Rarely is this true. The term sonims (coined from solid nonmetallic impurities) was proposed many years ago but never came into common use. In general, the term non-metallic inclusions seems to be satisfactory and adequate. NATURE AND CONS1lTUTION OF NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS From the standpoint of origin, inclusions fall naturally into two classes: (1) those occurring as a result of reactions taking place in the body of molten or solidifying metal and (2) those resulting from mechanical incorporation of refractories or other materials with which molten steel comes in contact. The former are by far the more numerous and have been called indigenous, natural, or native inclusions. The latter are by their very nature sporadic in occurrence and have been called exogenous, accidental, adventitious, or foreign inclusions. They are often referred to as the "slag-stringer" type, though here also the material is not likely to be furnace slag. Substances Found in Inclusions. Nonmetallic inclusions are composed principally of oxides and sulfides but carbides and nitrides sometimes play an important role. In the case of indigenous inclusions the reactions by which these particles are precipitated from molten or solidifying steel may be caused by: (1) oxidation such as may occur during refining or during tapping and teeming, (2) deoxidation by added alloys, (3) change

This report describes development and demonstration of an upgraded stench fire warning system for underground wines. Current systems, which have been used since before 1920, release an ethyl mercaptan mixture into the mines' compressed and/or ventilation air during emergencies. Miners, when smelling ethyl mercaptan, evacuate the mine according to predetermined plans. These systems, while simple, have problems with safety and reliability. The upgraded system overcomes these problems. The system uses a different stench agent, is less toxic, less nauseating, and less corrosive than ethyl mercaptan. These combined with the feature of thiophane not reacting with iron oxides, makes the upgraded system safer and more reliable. The system also uses a combination of two simple principles: a standpipe with pressure balancing to provide a constant head, and a sized orifice to control the rate of release of the stench agent. This system enables the mine to release the agent for a longer period which provides better coverage and to ensure that miners will not be exposed to potentially toxic concentrations of the stench agent. The system is easy to operate, requiring only the turning of two 1/4-turn ball valves. The upgraded system has been successfully tested during two evacuation drills at an underground uranium mine. Using three injectors (one on the compressed air line and one on each of two intake air shafts), the system exhibited significant improvements in warning times over the mine's existing system. This report provides a detailed description of the system design and its demonstrated performance in two mine demonstrations.

In March, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) held its annual conference in Toronto, Ontario. This is the third PDAC meeting the author has attended. The following are some impressions of the meeting. And the author looks forward to the joint meeting of the PDAC and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum to be held March 5-10, 2000, entitled Mining Millennium 2000. One of the features of next year’s gathering is a proposed forum of world mining ministers, the first ever to be held anywhere.

Fluid flow properties of porous media have long been of interest in such varied disciplines as geology, geophysics, soil mechanics, and chemical, civil, and mechanical engineering. This interest has resulted in numerous models of porous media that have been proposed, tested, and found to be useful under, at best, only special circumstances. A critical review of most of these models is given by Scheidegger. 1 The application of each new tool to the study of porous media has helped to test some of the existing theories and to form new ideas based on the new parameters being measured. In the application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to the study of the properties of fluids in porous media, the theoretical studies of Korringa et al.2 resulted in a model for the relaxation of spin polarization of protons in a hydrogenous fluid in a pore of a solid. Seevers3,4 verified this model, established a method for measuring the surface-to-volume-ratio distribution in a porous medium, and proposed a technique for determining specific permeability in sandstones. In the present investigation, the uses of NMR methods are extended and a simple model of porous media is developed from an analysis of pulsed NMR measurements. In this model, the pore spaces of a porous medium are divided into three groups on the basis of their surface-to-volume ratios. To evaluate predictions of the NMR model, laboratory measurements of spin-lattice relaxation time, porosity, permeability, and residual (irreducible) water saturation were conducted on more than 150 sandstone samples obtained from four oil fields in North America. Applications are discussed for estimating the volume of movable fluid, ?p, and the specific permeability, k, of sandstone samples. The former parameter, which can be considered as producible porosity, is expressed by ?p = [1 -- (Swr/100)]? , .... (1) where + is porosity in percent of bulk volume and Swr is the residual (irreducible) water saturation in percent of pore volume at a capillary pressure of 50 Psi. Fast, nondestructive laboratory methods are described for determining porosity, movable fluid, and permeability of sandstone samples from measurements with a pulsed NMR (spin-echo) apparatus. Procedures are given for adapting these methods to samples of irregular shape and small size. Theory General In the Korringa, Seevers, and Torrey2 (KST) model the observed decrease in the spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, of protons of a hydrogenous liquid contained in the pore spaces of a porous solid is attributed to an increase in the correlation time for the random motion of the water molecules and to the presence of paramagnetic centers at the liquid-solid interface. This old and well-known method of determining silver is, in bullion work, so far superior to the furnace-assay that it is looked upon with reverential awe by many, if not by most, users, and its ease of execution, with proper equipment, commends it highly where much commercial bullion work on silver is required. The method is so thoroughly well known that a description of it here may seem to be unnecessary, but many thousands of determinations are annually made by it in the U. S. Mint Service and its practice is there reduced to an art. This is necessary both for the sake of economy of time, and because high-grade work with it requires constant practice. It is useless for a person who uses it only occasionally to expect to attain high accuracy with it, without spending more time upon a detemination than is warranted in a busy commercial laboratory. It is always employed in the Mint service whenever possible, but its chief field is in the determination of silver in standard silver (ingots and coin), which is 900 fine in silver and 100 fine in copper, and I shall first briefly outline its use on this metal and then take up various points in detail, especially as related to the accuracy of the results obtained. For this determination 1,115 mg. of standard metal are weighed and transferred to a glass-stoppered bottle, the metal is dissolved in nitric acid, and 100 cc. of a standard solution of NaCl run in. The bottle is then vigorously shaken and a measured portion of a decimal salt solution added, and again shaken, if necessary. These operations are repeated until the silver is precipitated. Standard metal being 900 fine, 1,115 mg. should carry 1,003.5 mg. of silver, which is a convenient figure to work with.

[Selenium and tellurium are rare elements in the earth's crust. Their scarcity and primary dependence of supply on copper and lead output are in consonance with the relatively small quantities consumed at 1964 level. Production depending on output of copper and lead creates a supply situation- which would appear to militate against development of large-scale usage of these elements. However, supplies have adequately met. demand in the past decade and can be increased substantially if warranted by new uses for either selenium or tellurium Ores of copper and lead re the principal sources of selenium and tellurium. Byproducts from the smelting and refining of copper and lead concentrates are incorporated in refinery anode slimes from which selenium and tellurium metal are recovered.]

Computer control has been one of the fastest moving and most glamorous fields of industrial development in the past decade. A review of this period shows some truly remarkable accomplishments in both system development and applications. In addition, work now under way promises results which will continue the rate of progress of the past. This paper will review the history and status of the field of computer control and point out the major breakthroughs which have occurred. It will analyze the present trends and extrapolate them to predict the early future developments in the field.

General economic conditions continued to improve in the second quarter of 1984 as real gross national product advanced at an annual rate of 7.5 percent (table 1). This followed an even larger first quarter annual rate increase of 10.1 percent. The slower second quarter growth was greeted as a sign that the economy is not over-heating. The signs of slowed growth in some sectors suggest that the recovery may continue well into 1985 without the inflation symptomatic of a rapid recovery. Most of the slowdown in growth was absorbed by business inventories, personal consumption of durable goods, and residential fixed investment. Business inventories grew by only 68 percent as much as in the first quarter, personal consumption for durable goods grew by 58 percent of the first quarter rate, and residential fixed investment slowed to only 44 percent of the first quarter growth. Sectors with accelerated growth in the second quarter included personal consumption of nondurable goods and of services, which increased at annual rates of 9.6 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively, and Federal purchases of goods and services, which increased at an annual rate of 47.9 percent.

The use of the Scanning Electron Microscope to characterize Coal Mine Dust has been possible because of two circumstances. First, the imaging process of the SEM allows multiple signals (secondary electrons, back scattered electrons, x-ray emission, etc.) to be viewed. Second, the use of a computer to analyze the signals and perform statistical tests on the results. The parameters described are size, shape, chemical composition, mass distributions, and particle thickness. Although the system is intended for particular systems, those of agglomerates (whether tile same or not) are handled by special aspects of the computer programs. The work on fibers is not completed at the time of this report. This work discusses the hardware (developed especially for this process) and software (both on an IBM 360/370 and a PDP 11/20). The latter system allows direct interaction between the operator of the SEM and computer for maximum information at the least time.

Service failures of seemingly conventional galvanized bolts, in normal operation, on transmission towers in New Brunswick have been found to be the result of hydrogen cracking. In both these cases, similar failures elsewhere can be avoided by suitable clauses in the purchase specifications. In the first case described, the manufacturing procedure was responsible for strengthening and embrittling a standard, soft, constructional steel. In this case, a fracture mechanics analysis predicted critical crack depths for final fracture very similar to those found in practice. This case reveals an apparent cooperative connection between hydrogen embrittlement and strain ageing in plain carbon steels. In the second case described, the steel was simply a high strength steel which should not have been made into galvanized bolts.

Since the publications of Gy’s initial work, many authors have discussed the approaches to estimate the variance of the fundamental sampling error (FSE). Experimental tests suggested by Pitard and François-Bongarçon determine the sampling parameters K and a to calibrate Gy’s formula. The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method are well known and broadly used for many commodities. However, prior to the analysis, the collection of a representative sample is an intriguingly difficult task. The composite for the heterogeneity tests often consists of run-?of-?mine material or processed ore on a conveyor belt. In most cases the final sample does not have enough mass, mixes different geological units, represents a rare blend and does not characterise the deposit. In order to obtain a reliable composite for trace elements and low-grade ores, sampling practitioners suggest at least half a ton of material.To prevent the common representative pitfalls in the FSE, this case study focuses on a single gold-?bearing geological unit collected in situ. With this unit being structured by the mine geologists, but with the interaction between engineers and chemists, it was possible to validate the reconciliation suggested by Pitard (2015). The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method were performed using 500 kg of a smoky quartz from a single geological domain and the results were compared to Gy’s formula. The logging practice by the geologists was modified, emphasising the definition of the size of the gold nugget or its cluster, number of grains and association. Finally, a mineralogical study was conducted on the geological unit to define the liberation factor.
