The possibility of cheap electric power for a number of mining areas in this country has suggested to many the idea of electric smelting of nonferrous ores in small units at or near the mines. The electric smelting of nonferrous ores was tested fairly thoroughly 20 years ago by United States Bureau of Mines and by others, and the fact that it did not achieve continuing workable success in any instance is sufficient proof that it offered no advantages at that time.

Mt Waruwari, host to the Porgera underground gold mine in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG), is a prominent ridge of sediments and dioritic intrusives rising approximately 600m above the surrounding valley floor. Consequently, mining occurs in a low stress environment where structural and material considerations are foremost in the design of ground support and reinforcement. Three major rock types are encountered in the underground mine. These are locally referred to as "black sediments" (slightly indurated mudstones and clayey siltstones), "altered sediments" (derived from black sediments by thermal metamorphism), and "intrusives" of dioritic composition. The rocks are moderately to highly fractured, the black sediments being generally weak and occasionally sheared while the altered sediments and intrusives are quite strong but often brittle. Mining takes place from a series of stopes extracted by either slot and mass blast or a modified vertical crater retreat method (VCR), which are backfilled with a cemented rock fill. Ground support and reinforcement has been relatively conserv- ative to date and generally relies on pattern reinforcement of all development with cement grouted "rebar" bolts and mesh, extending to pattern cable bolting with occasional mesh in stope backs. In addition there has been considerable reinforcement of stope hangingwalls in some cases. A programme of broad scale structural mapping, monitoring with extensometers, material property testing, and stress analysis has been devised to allow optimum design of ground support and reinforcement in the future. Considerable work remains to ,omplete this task.

This paper describes the operations of the St. Joe Mining & Milling Co. in Boulder County, Colo., as of June 1936. Later a brief visit was made to the mine in September 1936; information obtained at that time has also been recorded. The company operates a gold mine, the Grand Republic, in the Sugar Loaf mining district; a 100-ton flotation mill in Lefthand Canyon near Gold Hill; and a custom sampling punt, the Boulder Ore Sampling Works, at Boulder, Colo.

A large and increasing data base of apatite fission track results from sedimentary and granitic rocks exposed within the south-eastern highlands and along the continental margin ofAustralia provides constraints for the tectonic development of the south-eastern passive margin. The fission track results suggest that many regions of the south-eastern margin of Australia experienced distinct episodes of relatively rapid cooling during the middle Cretaceous to early Tertiary that can be attributed to the effects of rifting. One cooling episode is middle Cretaceous in age and related to denudation of the south eastern highlands from Tasmania to northern New South Wales between ~90 - 100 Ma. Rocks exposed along the present coast line record a later episode of rapid cooling, which is diachronous and decreases in age northward from ~80 to 90 Ma in northern Tasmania to southern New South Wales, ~60 - 80 Ma in central and northern New South Wales, and to ~50 - 60 Ma in southern Queensland. The results are consistent with models suggesting that underplating occurred inward of the rift along the eastern margin of Australia as a result of the onset of continental extension in the Tasman Sea at ~96 Ma. This resulted in a significant change in base level and km-scale denudation of much of the southeastern highlands. Subsequently, as breakup commenced during the Late Cretaceous at ~80 Ma and continued into the Paleocene at ~60 Ma, the second stage of cooling was imprinted on the rocks along the margin. This cooling is probably due to the relaxation of elevated geothermal gradients associated with rifting as well as some denudation. Because rifting was oblique to the present-day coast, different regions record different ages of cooling associated with the rift. The southern regions of New South Wales and Victoria yield ages associated with earlier rifting while regions of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland give ages associated with later rifting.

Mining companies are increasingly looking to the developing world for the next generation of mining projects, often in countries that have little or no previous history of large-scale mining. One of the major challenges for such projects is hiring?and retaining?personnel that have technical skills and experience in mining-related disciplines. Staffing a mine with an expatriate workforce is neither cost-effective nor sustainable, and many countries now insist that mining companies ?transform? the profile of their workforce to more closely mirror the demographic profile of the host population. The need to nurture mining-related skills in emerging mining nations is not solely limited to the workforce: there are also pressing economic and sustainability imperatives to develop capacity within local service providers such as consultants and contractors, as well as to facilitate informed engagement between mining companies, government and civil society. However, few educational institutions in emerging mining nations currently have the ability to offer practical training in mining-related disciplines. Local employees who are sponsored by companies to develop their skills through international study maybe impeded by language and cultural barriers, and may also be taught using course content that is of limited relevance to the specific challenges of their future working environment. This paper addresses the challenge of skills development and retention in emerging mining nations and uses examples from sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia Pacific region to explore practical means of developing capacity in mining-related disciplines. It examines the need for companies to implement strategies to develop local technical capacity in countries where they envisage a long-term operational future and also highlights the need to foster partnerships between academia, developmental institutions, mining companies, governments and civil society to establish the critical mass of mining-related skills required to nurture the development of a sustainable mining industry.

The pile capacity gain with time evaluated and implemented for the construction of the Route 21 Viaduct in Newark, NJ, U.S.A is discussed in this paper. The project consisted of the replacement of more than 3.2 km of viaduct and ramps. The project site consists of thick residual materials deposited by the Wisconsin Glacier over sedimentary rocks. The upper portion is glacial-lacustrine deposit underlain by marginal morainic till and stratified drift. Subsurface investigations identified significant variations in layer thickness and grain size consistency. The site was characterized into 4 Soil types, based on subsurface soil behavior. Closed end 600 mm and 450 mm diameter driven pipe piles were used for the foundation. Loading tests conducted during an advanced construction contract, established that a significant soil set-up could be expected. For the first construction contract, a pilot loading test program consisting of 112 dynamic loading tests and 77 re-strikes (at 2 to 4 weeks) using the PDA (Pile Driving Analyzer) with CAPWAP (Case Pile Wave Analyses Program) was conducted to establish the soil set-up behavior. Nine (9) quick static loading tests were conducted to substantiate the long-term pile capacity. Based on the loading test results, average set-up factors were established and utilized for developing production pile driving criteria. Bearing resistance with depth was analyzed and reviewed. The set-up factors varied significantly, ranging from 1.05 to 1.89, and averaged about 1.30. Conclusions are derived. Set-up factors behavior for each soil type plotted by linear regression are presented and discussed. An appropriate set-up with time relationship for a glacial soil is suggested.

Extending an organization?s knowledge base throughout the entire enterprise can improve operations. Until recently, though, field operations were often left out of the information loop, as extending high-bandwidth communications into harsh environments often proved impossible due to thermal extremes, physical hazards and caustic chemicals. However, advances in the design and manufacture of rugged fiberoptic cables have now enabled the successful installation of 10-gigabit transmission links to places such as mining operations. The experience of Consol Energy exemplifies how plant managers can successfully enlist ruggedized tight buffered cables to help carry the efficiency of ERP communications into even the most challenging work environments. ?As part of our ERP implementation, we extended our corporate network underground into our mines using fi beroptic cable,? said Tom Prokop, manager-site support for Consol Energy. ?We?ve actually had rooffalls bury the cable between rocks and still did not lose data communications. Our maintenance personnel are now able to access our ERP system while underground at locations that can be up to 32 km (20 miles) away from their desks or the warehouse. Access to the corporate network allows them to order parts, look at electronic schematics, access monitoring data, no matter where they are in the mine. With a few hundred workers below ground, this immediate access translates into a time-savings that adds up in a hurry.?

In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. Shield recovery in a longwall move is normally conducted from tailgate to headgate. However, if the face is wide and the immediate roof is weak, difficult conditions with considerable roof sag, excessive shield load, and local roof falls could occur as the shield recovery proceeds to the middle of the face, causing delays in shield recovery. The situation could be aggravated when a pre-driven longwall recovery room is employed. Alternatively, a bi-directional approach for shield recovery, i.e. shield recovery starting from the middle of the face towards both tailgate and headgate, can alleviate the roof sag significantly by quickly withdrawing the shields towards the lower abutment pressure zones at the headgate and tailgate sides. In this case, the bi-directional shield recovery approach was used in a longwall move for a 1450 ft wide face under weak roof conditions. Shields were successfully withdrawn within five days without experiencing significant roof sag. The time-dependent roof-to-floor convergence, shield pressure, and roof conditions were monitored during shield recovery. 3-D finite element modeling was conducted prior to longwall move to evaluate the difference between a uni-directional and a bi-directional shield recovery during a longwall face move. Vertical stress, yield zone in and around the recovery room, load on the shields, and convergence at the center of the shield canopy were obtained from computer modeling, and compared with the data from field monitoring. Finally, the advantages of the bi-directional shield recovery are discussed.

The Piedras Verdes copper mine is a new run-of-mine (ROM), heap leach, solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) operation located 21 km (13 miles) north-northwest of the town of Alamos in the state of Sonora, Mexico. The Piedras Verdes copper mine is wholly owned by Frontera Copper Corp. (FCC), a Canadian corporation, through its 100 percent beneficial interest in Cobre del Mayo S.A. de C.V. (CDM), a Mexican registered company. The January 2008, minable reserves were estimated to be 193.6 Mt (213 million st) at a grade of 0.36 percent copper. The overall recovery of total copper was estimated to be 61.9 percent. The property has an additional 17-year life and is designed to produce 31.7 kt/a (70 million lbs/year) of cathode copper. Construction commenced in early October 2005. The first copper cathode was produced 12 months later at a total capital cost of $100 million. Elevations at the site range from 150 to 300 m (490 to 985 ft) above sea level. The area has excellent infra-structure in the form of towns, power, water, roads, rail, airfield and access to the deepwater port of Guaymas (Fig. 1). The surrounding area is also famous for its numerous polymetallic (lead, zinc, copper, silver and gold) epithermal veins. Some of these were mined for more than 200 years and provided the wealth on which the town of Alamos was built. The original village of Piedras Verdes was located in the area of the proposed openpit mine and, consequently, it was necessary to construct a new townsite 6 km (3.7 miles) to the south before project development could commence. The new town site (Fig. 2), complete with power and water supplies, roads, sewer system, schools, clinic and recreational facilities, was completed and occupied by 49 families in September 2005. CDM received its remaining permits from the Mexican environmental authorities on Sept. 20, 2005. This enabled the company to proceed with full-scale development. CDM owns or controls 27 mining concessions covering the resource. Surface rights to the Piedras Verdes project were controlled by four Ejidos (communal agrarian and/or ranching societies) and five individual landowners. CDM has acquired all surface rights necessary for its mining operations and associated facilities either through outright purchase or long term lease agreements.

The No. 10 metro line of Shanghai city is 36 kilometers in length and will pass through the operating airport runway by using tunnel boring machine with earth pres-sure balance mode. Although there are examples through world that tunnels pass through airport runway and tunnelling underground is not a difficult undertaking technically, there is rare experience in China for the similar projects especially in Shanghai saturated soft soil region. Shanghai soft earth is famous for its high compressibility, high rate of water content, weakness in strength, large deformation and different characteristics in earth strata. Besides, the whole construction process will be under ultra-large airplane dynamic load on the surface ground over the tunnel, which increases the risks of construction process. This paper evaluates the feasibility of building the metro tunnel under such an extremely serious condition, especially the subsidence of ground surface caused by advancing of tunnel boring machine, which also is the most important control target for the safe operating of the runway. Furthermore, this paper discusses the effective measures to keep the settlements in the permissible level during the whole working period for the tunnel from aspects of plan, design and construction.

INTRODUCTION The Norad Expansion Project was located 10 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, within Cheyenne Mountain. The expansion areas to be excavated would be adjacent to the existing underground Norad complex, which would remain in operation during the work on the expansion. The original complex had been constructed approximately eight years earlier and had been in full operation for approximately five years. Phase I, Excavation was awarded the Tiro Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of Harrison Western Corporation, Denver, Colorado, in the fall of 1970. Notice to Proceed was given to Tiro on 28 December 1970. The project owner was the U. S. Air Force, design was performed by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, who would also serve as the construction agency. [ ]

Introduction Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) is an improvement over coal-fired boiler design. It offers several advantages over conventional boilers. AFBC can meet sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission regulations without the need for add-on flue gas treatment equipment. The relatively low combustion temperature inhibits ash melting, thus reducing slagging and fouling that can in turn increase a boiler's fuel flexibility. AFBC process The fluidized bed boiler that operates at atmospheric pressure on the fire side (AFBC) is relatively simple and no different in purpose from those pulverized coal boilers used by utilities today. Fluidized bed boilers can generate steam at the pressure and temperature needed by modern steam turbines. Only the firing system is different. In fluidized bed combustion, the fuel can be almost any coal or waste fuel. It is burned in the presence of a bubbling bed of limestone. Air is forced through the bed at a velocity sufficient to support the weight of the bed particles. When the bed is fully fluidized, it bubbles like a boiling liquid. Although the burning coal makes up less than 1% of the fluidized bed, all the bed particles are heated quickly by the turbulence. The calcium in limestone reacts with sulfur dioxide produced in coal combustion to form calcium sulfate in a dry solid state. In this way, sulfur emissions regulations can be met without installing flue gas desulfurization equipment. Boiler tubes submerged in the bed absorb heat directly from the turbulent solids. The heat converts water in the tubes to steam or superheats the steam. Because of the intimate contact of the boiler tubes with the fluidized bed, heat transfer is highly efficient. Consequently, less boiler tubing surface is needed to generate the same amount of steam as in a comparable pulverized coal boiler. The optimum temperature for sulfur capture is relatively low, about 815°C (1500°F) as opposed to 1370°C (2500°F) for pulverized coal boilers. This results in the formation of lower levels of NON. Because operating temperatures are below those that fuse coal ash, a single design can burn a variety of coals without slagging or fouling problems. TVA's AFBC development program Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) involvement in AFBC development began in 1974 and has addressed the technical uncertainties through a comprehensive program of design, experimental, and analytical studies. In 1979, TVA and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) developed plans for a 20-MW AFBC pilot plant, a 10-fold scale-up over the next largest test facility. In 1900, as far as available records show, there were only two producer-gas power installations in the United States. In June, 1915, the number probably exceeded 1,000. Of this number, some 84.5 per cent comprised small plants using anthracite, and only about 15 per cent of the total number utilized bituminous coal and lignite. In addition to these, two plants used wood, and three or four used oil. In the main, however, the larger sized units are operating on bituminous coal and lignite.

A review is made of the limited published experience of the effects of cemented fill in flotation.A general approach is adopted in listing and discussing possible sources of, and reasons for, ore contamination by cemented fill, together with basic, fundamental approaches to minimizing this contamination. These approaches involve basic mining design, effect of fill placement density, optimization of curing time and of cement content, variation of fill particle grading, use of flocculants and of pozzolans, fill placement and dewatering, and or blasting and handling practice.

In 1988, Albania's centrally planned economy continued to decline. The country's officially published yearend economic report did not contain concrete results such as the growth of national income or industrial output. 2 The shortfall for central budget earnings for 1988 amounted to 9% below the planned target. Losses in industry were attributed to poor management and organization, as well as to low technical standards and excessive consumption of fuels and raw materials. The construction, energy, and mining sectors of industry did not meet their annual production plans. As in 1987, within these sectors, the chromite and petroleum extracting and processing industries continued to lag in output. Both chromite and petroleum remained Albania's chief sources of foreign exchange; the production downturn of these commodities continued to negatively affect the country's foreign trade position, especially in view of constitutional prohibitions against using foreign credit to finance trade. The chief events in the minerals industry in 1988 included the construction startup of the first of four planned new concentrators at the Bulquize chromite mine, as well as the construction startup of new ferrochromium capacities at Elbasan. Also, the copper mining industry reported the completion of facility expansion at the Perlat mine in the Mid-rite district. Albania began new facility construction at the Dinamo heavy-equipment enterprise at Tirana to maximize self-sufficiency in mining equipment production. Upon completion, the new factory would double the out-put of mining equipment at the enterprise and would introduce new designs for electric trucks and pneumatic drills for the mining industry. The new facility would also increase the production of new machinery and equipment for the country's beneficiation plants.

This study investigates the enrichment of a low-grade colemanite concentrate (-3 mm) using a Knelson centrifugal gravity concentrator. Due to its low boron content, the concentrate is unsaleable and has to be stored under appropriate conditions to avoid potential environmental problems. The low-grade colemanite concentrate was comminuted to size fractions of-1 mm, -0.5 mm, and -0.15 mm before treatment in the Knelson Concentrator. The effects of particle size, fluidizing water velocity, and bowl speed on the enrichment process were examined. The B2O3content of the concentrate was increased from 33.96% to a maximum of 45.52%. B2O3recovery increased with increasing bowl speed and particle size, and decreased with increasing fluidizing water velocity. The enrichment process also rejected arsenic and iron to some extent, with a maximum reduction of arsenic from 1360 g/t to 765 g/t and iron from 0.88% to0.33%.

The need for legislative reform of health and safety legislation has been recognised in New Zealand for about a decade. Previous legislation did not cover all work places, many areas were excluded from coverage, and there were at least 14 different acts and dozens of sets of regulations dealing with various aspects of health and safety.
