Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is being investigated for the potential to determine roof hazards in underground mines. GPR surveys were conducted at four field sites with accompanying ground truth in order to determine the value of GPR for roof hazard detection. The resolution of the current system allows detection of gross roof fractures (>63 cm (s1/4 in) zone) or rider beds in coal measure roof. Data quality is not yet sufficient to detect small bed separations or subtle lithologic changes in the roof. Differences in data quality are discussed, as well as suggestions for collecting improved data.

Planning the use of South Africa's energy resources, especially coal, is of the utmost importance. The State and the mining industry require reliable official estimates of the economically mineable coal reserves for planning purposes. An overview of al the previous reserve estimates is given, with specific attention to the two most recent estimates-those of Petrick and De Jager. The differences between these two estimates are highlighted. The following important aspects are discussed: . the need to update the information regarding South Africa's mineable coal reserves, . the necessity of understanding and agreement between the coal-mining industry and the State department responsible for updating the coal-reserve data, and . the importance of the specific assumptions used in the updating of the data. A downward adjustment of mineable reserve figures is proposed, and the factors that influence the meaningful exploitation of the coal reserves are discussed. A recommendation is made as to how the Waterberg coal reserve should be exploited, and it is concluded that the Soutpansberg Coalfield cannot be exploited economically in the foreseeable future. An evaluation of the status of the coal-export trade is made and compared with the assumptions and targets set at the start of the coal-exportation scheme. The comparison shows the extent to which the exploitation of the coal reserves is being negatively influenced by the current market situation. Recommendations are made regarding planning for the coal-export market, and the aspects that have to be taken into account to keep South Africa in the export market are identified. Reference is made to the fact that the present unrestrained wage and salary adjustments, which show a total disregard of South Africa's poor productivity record, require serious thought and speedy rectification if the country is to survive in the export market. A salary and wage strategy must be developed to suit the specific needs of the Republic of South Africa.

This report describes laboratory studies by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the suitability of a static oxygen (OJ adsorption test for evaluating the self-heating tendencies of coals. Reliable minimum self-heating temperature (SHT) values from adiabatic oven tests were used as standards for comparison and evaluation. A suite of six coals was tested in the adiabatic oven and in sealed flasks. In the latter tests, both undried and dried samples, in a range of four particle sizes, were examined. Miniature pressure trans-ducers monitored pressures in the flasks, and gas samples taken at the end of the tests quantified all the gases present. An excellent correlation was found between the minimum SHT's and amounts of O2 adsorbed over a 7-day period for dried coals, independent of particle size. In addition, a good correlation was obtained between the minimum SHT's and pressure changes in the flasks at the end of the test for the same coals, also independent of particle size. Based on these results, the sealed flask test can be reliably used to determine the self-heating tendency of a bituminous coal sample.

The proposed Gautrain Rapid Rail Link (GRRL) will require approximately 15 km of double or twin high-speed rail track tunnels located for the greater part beneath the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, including Houghton, Rosebank and Sandton. During the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) it became clear that potential surface vibration above and in the vicinity of the tunnels was a matter of serious concern to the residents of the affected properties and that the impact required assessment. The general method proposed is based on a US Department of Transportation, 1998, publication in which abase vibration curve derived for typical high-speed passenger trains is adjusted for the topological, geological and other features to predict the surface vibration and the associated ground-borne noise. The predictions indicate that some isolated areas might be impacted but that the impact will likely be limited, and it is possible to mitigate the impact using suitable track construction methods and track support systems.

"Stillwater Mining Company recovers platinum and palladium from their Nye Montana operations. Mining first commenced at Nye in 1987 at a milling rate of 455 t/d (500 stpd). The plant was expanded in 1995 with the replacement of the ball mill and the addition of flotation capacity to increase mill throughput to 1820 t/d (2000 stpd). The applications for platinum and palladium have increased in recent years particularly in the automotive industry and the supply of the metals has remained fairly constant with prices for both platinum and palladium increasing and remaining very stable. In 1997 Stillwater initiated the expansion of their operations to increase production of platinum and palladium. Projects were initiated to expand production at the Nye operations, increase smelter and refining capacities at the Columbus facilities and to develop the extension of the orebody at the East Boulder site. This paper will discuss the changes at the Nye concentrator which were completed to increase production from 1820 t/d (2000 stpd) to 2730 t/d (3000 stpd) and eliminate some of the process bottlenecks.IntroductionStillwater Mining Company is mining the only significant primary source of PGMs outside of South Africa. The J-M Reef is an extensive mineralized zone containing PGMs that has been traced over a strike length of about 43 km (27 miles) in the southwest region of Montana. Stillwater controls the entire PGM mineralized zone.Johns-Manville geologists discovered palladium and platinum in the early 1970’s. In 1979, a Manville subsidiary entered into a partnership with Chevron, USA to develop the project. In 1 987, operations at the Stillwater property near Nye, Montana commenced."

"An increasing number of mobile phones is increasing the number of the discarded mobile phones. Many efforts are thus being made to collect and recycle these devices. This paper is a short introduction of the recycling system of precious metals from the discarded mobile phone, currently available in Japan. Moreover, an attempt has been made to compare the energy recovery and the mechanical recycling of plastic wastes from the discarded mobile phone. The assessment has been carried out in the context of the life cycle assessment methodology (LCA). The environmental impact of each option was assessed by calculating the following impact indicators: depletion of abiotic resources (ADP), and global warming potential (GWP). 1. Introduction In 2003, the demand for mobile phones was increased since the camera was included in a mobile phone and the 3rd generation of mobile phones was introduced. In turn, the number of discarded mobile phone is rising sharply. Generally speaking, all the metallic parts of mobile phones can be recovered and recycled by using smelting and purification techniques. The recycled materials are then used to fabricate other new products."

The forecasting of floating earth inrush into the working is to a great extent connected with the investigation of the rock mass stressed-deformed state around the working. The aim of such investigations is to estimate the carrier ability of the protective layer (which is stabilized by the physico-chemical mode of fixing) and to determine it's thickness, which is to be sufficient to present the floating earth inrush into the working. We consider the protective layer to have exhausted it's carrier ability if the rocks of this layer reached the overlimit phase of deformation and it's greater part (section), which adjoins the working. is destroyed up to the limit of the remaining strength. So, the aim of investigations is to determine the size of the rocks inelastic deformation zone in the roof of the working. It is necessary to take into account the presence of water saturated seam in the roof and the overlimit characteristics of the rocks, their ability to lower the carrier capacity up to the level of the remaining strength.

This iron ore mine site, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, commenced operations in 1998, with ore derived by mining of open-cut pits in Channel Iron Deposits (CIDs). A portion of the ore extracted at the mine is processed at wet processing plants that produce both ore saleable product and waste fines (i.e. tailings) slurry. The waste fines produced at the wet plants are presently stored within Waste Fines Cells (WFCs).Waste fines cells A (WFCA) and B (WFCB) are located within an Autonomous Haul System (AHS) area and consist of embankments that span the width of the pit in east-west alignments. Technical studies and design analyses were carried out to support embankment raises and ongoing development of the WFCs. During operation and development of the WFCs, a multitude of simultaneous activities took place to the immediate north and south of WFCA respectively. These activities included the construction of the embankment raises using the AHS fleet, mining of the CID to not only mine the ore but to also create future deposition space for WFCB, blasting next to the WFC embankments as part of the mining activities, seepage collection and dewatering of the pit in the vicinity of the WFC.This paper discusses the material characteristics, design approach, construction staging and equipment requirements, blasting near embankments, water management, facility consequence category and closure concept.CITATION:Boshoff, J J, 2018. "A number of coal mines in India are affected by fire. Most of coking coal reserves in the country are located in Jharia coalfield where more than 18 sq. km is in the grip of fire. Generally such fires are confined in areas near to our crops. About 37 million tonnes of coking coal are lost in recent yearsdue to fire and another 48 million tonnes are blocked in fire areas. Preventive measures adopted to control fires were only partially successful and the cost of such measures was exorbitant I Temperature of blast holes in fire area varies between 60 and 300° C or even more. Even after thorough quenching of holes with water, it become difficult to bring down the temperature below SO"" C. For blasting hot holes primary need is to select safe and suitable commercial explosives and detonating fuse and to measure hot hole temperatures. VWiOUs types of commercially available explosives including Nitro Glycerine bare, slurries, site mixed slurries (SMS), emulsion5 ,detonating fuses and detonators were tested to determine their thermal behaviour at elevated temperatures under field simulated conditions in the Copyright © 2000 International Society of Explosives Engineers 1993g - Studies on Safe Blasting Technique in Fire Area of Coal Mines laboratory and in hot blast holes in field . More than 50 round of blast were conducted in fire areas. NG base compositions and detonators were found unsafe at temperature above SO0 C andtherefore, they are not permitted to be used in hot holes. Slurries and emulsion are stable upto 1200 c. For blasting at temperature exceeding SO0 C a heat resistant gel/ solution was developed by the authors and is being used in number of fire areas."

This paper briefly reviews the adequacy of existing management theories and practices and the managerial proficiency or competency in the South African mining industry. The investigation revealed that existing management practices are totally inadequate to enable all employees on all the levels of the mining industry to achieve the results required from them, in all aspects, at all times. As a result, the South African mining industry is gradually losing its long standing reputation as a relative cheap, competitive, and reliable supplier of minerals to the local and global markets. According to some prominent management authors and theorists, an all-inclusive unified management theory does not exist at present. In this paper the authors summarize the main aspects of a newly developed comprehensive, practical, and integrated management method. It is believed that the application of this method would significantly improve the future performance and competitiveness of the South African mining industry

The Candrill was developed with Soredem as a one-operator rockdrill for Canadian narrow vein mining. It provides the benefits of increased drilling rates, lower noise and vibration, mass reduction of 20% and system cost saving. The Candrill is to be commercialised at the end of 2001 together with a stoper drill through Parts Headquarters, Novatek's Canadian agent. The Candrill or pneumatic drills may be further exploited using a simple mechanised drilling system to further reduce operator labour, improve drilling speeds by up to 50% and to enhance drilling accuracy. Novatek's drilling system for simple mechanisation in gold and platinum mines is integrated with roof supports, can operate in stope widths as low as 800 mm and has resulted in labour savings of 50%, improved advances per blast of 20 to 50% and improved operator safety and ergonomics.

"INTRODUCTION The Lookout Mountain coal deposits were examined by J.L. Stratton, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in April and May 1943. The area investigated includes that part of southern Lookout Mountain in townships 4 to 8, south, ranges-9 to 11 east, and contains approximately 140 square miles in DeKalb and Cherokee Counties in northeastern Alabama (fig. 1.)Six coal seams having a minable thickness of 18 or more inches are represented in the area. The third seam, known locally as the Hill seam, has been correlated with the Upper Cliff No.1 seam and is referred to as such throughout this report. The preliminary investigation indicated that the Upper Cliff No. 1 seam is a low-volatile, high-grade coking coal. The work done on this project was confined principally to determining the amount and grade of coal in this seam.The only existing maps of mines in the area were one of the Lookout Fuel Co. at Lahusage, Ala. (fig. 2), and one of the Lookout Mountain Iron Co. at Battelle, Ala. (fig. 3), Consequently, to gain some knowledge of the grade and tonnage mined, surveys of the other mines were necessary. Many of them were caved, and many were filled with water, necessitating considerable preliminary work."

A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as derived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems.

The AusIMM/AMIC code for reporting Reserves seeks to improve the calibre of professional reporting on this subject. But have they gone far enough? Should the code appreciate that the degree of reliability of estimates required will vary with the type of mining planned? How does one "confirm continuity" as required by the code? The aim of optimum development drilling is to achieve appropriate ore zone definition for acceptable estimates of reserves and their economic extraction. Can this procedure be in conflict with the code? How does it affect finance decisions?

Crushing has proven to be of fundamental importance in mine mill integration at Highland Valley Copper (HVC). Highland Valley Copper has achieved large throughput and good quality control through the gyratory crushers by proper blast design and better gap control. The next step, in optimizing the mine mill relationship, is evaluating the crusher liner wear and its shape influence on performance and product size reduction. To do this a laser measurement device has been developed and data is being recorded on the concave and mantle liner wear. This paper will outline the work to date and indicate specific objectives of the work.

At Renlou Coal Mine, Huaibei Mine Area, the track entry deformed significantly after longwall mining in an overlying multiple seams. The supporting characteristics of primary roof bolts and shotcrete with wire mesh are closely related to the movement of the mine?s surrounding strata. A case study of a track entry deformation was monitored during the longwall mining of a selected overlying panel. The measured data showed the unique entry deformation pattern during the longwall mining in the overlying seam. Underground extensometer measurement showed that entry stability was mainly affected by the periodic roof weighting of longwall mining in the overlying seam. The displacement of the deeper strata occurred a head of the immediate vicinity of the entry. Thereafter, deformation of the roof and floor strata was in the form of shearing of the shallower strata. Due to the use of heavy-duty roof bolting with wire-mesh, the roof-tofloor and rib-to-rib convergences were small, but the floor heave was large, greater than 80% of the roof-to-floor convergence. The measured displacement from extensometers varied with the position of the monitored cross-sections and depth into the roof. There were several deformation patterns, such as shearing movement, compression, and expansion, and the variations between compression and expansion. Strata compression at the entry surface was always accompanied with shearing movement at the deeper strata. During the longwall mining, the whole surrounding strata of the entry moved toward the opening. Underground practical experience indicated that prior to mining, the entry was supported very well in excellent conditions. After mining, however, it deformed greatly. The current entry support technology was not effectively control the severe deformation incurred in entries driven in soft strata due to the following reasons: (1) little is known about the entry deformation behavior of the strata surrounding the opening and (2) the degree of interactions between entry deformation and roof bolting with wire mesh is not well understood. Consequently, effective supporting systems cannot be properly selected to control its deformation and maintain a stable supported surrounding structure.

Arrium’s magnetite concentrator has recently completed a modification program to improve the process that has been in operation in Whyalla, South Australia for the previous seven years. The magnetite concentrate is pumped via pipeline to the coast and serves as pellet plant feed, eventually being turned into steel in the Whyalla blast furnace. With the addition of a new 3MW IsaMill at the concentrator, the plant has seen increased production from a reduced feed grade, enabling Arrium to treat ores previously stockpiled as waste. This paper will focus on the design work and commissioning of the fine grinding circuit along with the year of optimisation that followed, taking the IsaMill up to 350+ tph of throughput.CITATION:Larson, M, Anderson, G, Mativenga, M and Stanton, C, 2015. Elongates are commonly used as stope support in South African gold and platinum mines. To evaluate the effect of the inherent strength, stiffness and yield variability associated with elongates, a statistical method is presented which addresses and quantifies the support performance at various levels of certainty. The analysis, which is based on a normal distribution, makes use of force-deformation curves determined from multiple laboratory compression tests on the same support type. The applicability of the method is illustrated making use of actual performance capabilities of various types of elongates. In order to ensure a high probability that support units installed underground exceed the standard support performance curve established by means of laboratory tests, the statistical mean of a suite of tests based on the same support type is downgraded. The ?correction factor? is a function of the mean and standard deviation of the test data, as well as the sample size of units deemed to control the local rock mass stability. It is shown that downgraded performance curves based on a high probability (90 to 95percent) of support units exceeding this performance level are suitable to ensure that the design of support systems will in variably meet the design criteria. In the highly discontinuous hangingwall rock mass typically associated with intermediate- and deep-level mining operations, the interaction between adjacent support units is comparatively limited (at the support spacings commonly used). Therefore, the appropriate sample size (n) of the support units controlling the local rock mass stability should be n= 1. In shallow mining conditions, sample sizes of up to n=5 may be warranted, depending on the spacing of joints and other discontinuities in the hangingwall.
