Selection of the best possible truck type (model) is of crucial importance for the mine decision-makers. In this paper, authors contribute to the body of knowledge by developing a novel methodology for the selection of mining truck. Both the Coefficient of Technical Level (CTL) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods were used in this study. The CTL represents a mathematical function which takes into consideration the interrelations among the main technical parameters of mining trucks. The authors developed a hierarchical structure where both attribute categories and their importance, i.e. priority or weight in the selection process were determined. For each category, a number of sub-attributes and their priorities were assigned, and a pairwise comparison among them was performed using the AHP method. In the final part of the study, the CTL was integrated into the AHP and represents a holistic approach in the selection of mining trucks. A case study on 180 tonnes truck category offered by five manufacturers was carried out. A sensitivity study of obtained results was also performed indicating a very stable solution. The methodology presented in this paper may be used by mining operators to help in the selection of a specific type when acquiring a new truck. It may also be used by equipment manufacturers to help in analysis of potential benefits of envisaged modifications concerning an existing truck type and/or development of a new type.

The Himalayan ranges have complex geological formation induced with locked up tectonic stresses and squeezing ground conditions. High overburden, steep slopes, perennial snow, and forest cover restricts accurate prediction of geological features, resulting in surprises during excavation. The tunnel planning under high altitude, extreme climatic, and unfavorable approachability conditions requires elaborate detailing. The construction technique and working faces for excavation are influenced by site accessibility/high overburden conditions, restricting the provision of access tunnel or shaft. The paper discusses site constraints influencing construction method and working faces for 8.9 km long highway tunnel at elevation 3,000 m under 1,900 mover burden through quartz-mica-schist formation.

A unique judicial opportunity allowed measurement of the response of three cracks in residential structure to blasting for underground aggregate mining. Instrumented cracks were located in the interior basement CMU mortar and upstairs dry wall as well as exterior brickwork. The dynamic environment was unusual. Even though the blasting occurred some 490 m (1600 ft) away, excitation frequencies were unusually high and there were no apparent surface waves. In addition there was no air overpressure wave to produce secondary crack response. As is typical, long term environmental effects produced greater crack response than did the blast induced ground motions.

Alluvial gold mining is thriving in the Yukon Territory and Alaska. The scale of many operations is similar to those in New Zealand but there is greater government support for research and test work. As a result a great deal of information on equipment for the recovery of alluvial gold has been obtained. This paper is a review of the information with the aim of making relevant data available in New Zealand.

The Florida phosphate industry currently produces more than 80 pct of the total U.S. marketable output of phosphate rock. Because phosphate is one of three principal nutrients used in formulating a complete fertilizer, it is imperative that an uninterrupted supply of this material be available to meet the agricultural requirements of the United States while maintaining a viable phosphate industry which is competitive in world markets. As a result of an evaluation made by the Bureau of Mines, five areas were identified that affect the overall production and projected growth of the phosphate industry in Florida. These areas relate to the technological ability of the industry to comply with environmental regulations and performance standards by using the best available technology. The most significant technical problem facing the industry is the management of the clay fraction rejected during the beneficiation of phosphate ores. Other areas of concern are environmental restrictions and regulatory requirements, issues associated with mining and reclamation of wetlands, reclamation of other disturbed lands, and consumptive water use. Each of these areas is reviewed, with major emphasis placed on the current state-of-the-art processes for treatment and management of phosphatic clays.

"IntroductionThe Bureau of Mines is investigating the fundamental factors in breaking down coal at the face, which govern the production of lump coal in typical mines working, different coal beds. Tiffany and Nelson in 1923-21 conducted tests on methods of blasting and use of different explosives, in a mine working the Pittsburgh bed in Pennsylvania. They determined come of these factors quantitatively, and compared their results with those obtained when the regular mine practice was followed.Results of Previous InvestigationThe tests by Tiffany and Nelson showed that the use of the cartridge of smaller diameter than that used in mine practice, resulted in an increase of 5 per cent in the amount of lump coal passing over a 1-1/4-inch bar screen, with a reduction of 32 per cent by weight in amount of explosive required. On the other hand, they found that on reducing the weight of charge 20 per cent, and using the cartridge of larger diameter, the round would not throw down the coal satisfactorily.Experiments with ""snubbing"" showed a similar improvement in quantity of lump coal, end the coal that was blasted rolled forward into the working place. however, in recent tests at another mine where the coal Lad different physical characteristics, snubbing did not always result in the coal rolling forward, on account of clinging to the ribs, and was not found to be an advantage. Therein the writers of this paper recommend that tests be made before deciding upon the adoption of snubbing in a particular mine."

A series of tests was carried out on one of the rock-pebble milling circuits treating complex nickel ores at Kambalda Nickel Operations of Western Mining Corporation. A mathematical model to describe the behaviour of a 508 mm hydrocyclone was developed from the data.A "flat" reduced efficiency curve was observed for the system. This was attributed to a marked difference in the specific gravity of different size fractions of the feed. A modified approach in describing the shape or the reduced efficiency curve resulted in accurate prediction of the hydrocyclone performance.

During the last several years, implementation of trusses, in lieu of wood cribs, has been successful for supplemental tailgate support in the Pittsburgh seam. This paper reviews, the truss support system provided by the new high strength 0.6" tensioned cable truss, which is now also being used in cribless tailgates. Cable loading and roof deformation were monitored to evaluate roof and floor performance. The test results indicate that the cable truss system successfully controlled the roof and floor during the first and second panel extraction. This paper will describe the advantages of cable trusses and their load transfer mechanism as well as mine evaluation.

For short tunnels, a reinforced cast-in-place lining is not economical and shotcreteis a logical substitution. In the past, reinforced shotcrete linings have been constructed with lattice girders and welded wire fabric. For the Russia Wharf Tunnel in Boston, MA, the Contractor, with the help of the Dr. G. Sauer Corporation offered the MBTA a VECP to substitute the reinforced cast-in-place concrete lining with a steel fiber reinforced shotcrete lining. The challenge was to adequately model the ductility of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete and to test the shotcrete prior to and during construction to assure quality control. To our knowledge, this type of numerical simulation has not been used on any other tunnels in the US.

"Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce the risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm in diameter, in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity of 3.6 m/s (700 fpm). Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle should be operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings agree with past respirable dust control research, providing guidance on spray selection and spray array design in ongoing efforts to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. IntroductionCoal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 µm in diameter, are deposited in the return entries of coal mines and can be reentrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal-dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions."

Tin in ores containing 0·025 to 1·5 per cent tin can be determined polarographically by the reduction of the chlorostannite ion at the dropping mercury electrode in 2M hydrochloric acid solution containing 15 per cent ammonium chloride. The tin is separated from interfering elements by distillation as the tetrabromide and collected from the distillate by co-precipitation with aluminium hydroxide. The method can detect 0·01 per cent tin in ore.INTRODUCTIONAn iodimetric method, suitable for routine analysis of titrating tin in concentrations down to 1 per cent, has been available for some years (Low, Weinig, and Schoder, 1939).As concentrations fall below 1 per cent tin, there is increasing difficulty in obtaining a distinct end point due to large amounts of iron and silica normally present after fusion of the ore. Since concentrations of tin down to 0·02 per cent are significant in ore dressing products it was necessary to examine methods to determine such low concentrations, and to adapt these to tin ores containing a wide variety of other minerals.EXPERIMENTALDigestion and separationCassiterite, the principal tin mineral, is refractory but readily attacked by a sodium peroxide flux to yield soluble sodium stannate. Have technological advancements in underground coal mining driven people's skills to new highs or have the expanded skills of mining people driven the industry's technological advancements. Who knows? What we do know is that both our technology and our people have made meaningful and significant advancements. Overall, longwall systems continue to increase productivity and retreat faster. Globally, gate road development is the primary bottleneck in a longwall mine. The primary bottleneck in gate road development is roofbolting. Generally, roofbolting is the bottleneck in room and pillar operations as well. This paper will present an integrated manufacturer's (Joy Mining Machinery) vision of the future in comparison to current equipment performance. Particular emphasis will be placed on roofbolter technologies.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical investigations for tunneling projects typically use vertical test borings and, to a lesser extent, angled borings. Horizontal drilling applications were often limited to specialty testing programs and to perform probe drilling from a tunnel boring machine (TBM) as part of production tunneling. The former often involved cumbersome setups with skid rigs and cribbing in a pilot tunnel or shaft. The latter usually was limited to generic probing for rock quality and ground water conditions with no sampling. Neither yielded continuous core at production rates suitable for design and construction planning. Conventional vertical investigations still make sense in many instances, particularly for tunnels planned beneath urban settings where truck access is convenient and where the tunnel horizon is not readily accessible via a portal or shaft. However, equipment is presently available to conduct horizontal geotechnicall investigations at reasonable production rates and cost. Advantages include continuously sampling the tunneling horizon and minimizing “access drilling” to get the zone of interest at the underground construction horizon. Horizontal boring lengths of up to approximately 800 m are considered feasible and those in the range of 150 to300 m are now routine. These capabilities make horizontal borings an attractive option to consider when looking at deep tunnels beneath ridges, especially where access is limited. Fewer drilling staging sites can also mean reduced environmental impacts when investigating tunnels proposed beneath sensitive lands such as public wilderness areas. Investment in early construction packages to develop portals for investigation access and, possibly in excavating test shafts for the same purpose should even be considered. Potential benefits in the form of achieving improved overall project costs using horizontal borings exist because of the significant additional data collected in the tunnel horizon. For this reason they should be considered during the routine cost-benefit analyses generally conducted for planning geotechnical investigations for tunneling. There is a strong focus in the mining industry to limit its impact on water quality and usage. This is even more evident in developing countries, where mining companies operate within local communities and have to be diligent not to affect them negatively. In mineral processing operations, the vast majority of water reclamation occurs at the tailings thickener area and tailings storage dam. It is often more effective to maximise water recovery at the tailings thickener before material transport to the tailings dam. Tailing dams are relatively inefficient, and experience a high degree of water loss due to evaporation, seepage and water retention. In addition, tailings dams present the biggest environmental liability for mineral resource projects, so it is beneficial to limit their size and loading.In the past, it was common for tailings thickener areas to have a significant footprint with several large diameter conventional thickeners, producing underflows of between 45-55% solids (w/w). At times, these multiple thickeners were difficult to operate, leading to inefficiencies in water recovery and quality. The development of High-Rate Thickeners (HRT) has resulted in improved settling properties and HRTs usually operate at significantly higher solids loadings (= 1.2 t/m2.h) when compared to conventional thickeners (= 0.1 t/m2.h). Subsequently, thickener diameters have reduced in size and HRT technology has become the preferred option for thickener circuit design in both new and existing operations. HRTs also produce higher water recoveries with increased underflow densities = 55% solids (w/w).The Carmen Copper Corporation (“Carmen Copper”) circuit upgrade is a recent example of these HRT benefits, where one, 39 m diameter, Outotec HRT treats the solids flow rate of five 76 m diameter conventional thickeners. This has allowed operations to increase dry plant tonnage by 50%, maintain key performance targets and provide a framework for further plant expansion. Les remblais en pâte cimentés sont de plus en plus utilisés dans les exploitations minières souterraines. Une autre alternative d?utilisation du remblai en pâte consiste à le pomper et à le stocker dans des empilements de surface. En plus d?avoir des avantages d?un point de vue de stabilité physique des ouvrages, le remblai en pâte cimenté en surface permettrait également de stabiliser les contaminants dans la matrice du remblai à l?aide du processus de solidification et de stabilisation. Dans cette étude, des remblais en pâte constitués d?un résidu minier sulfuré renfermant beaucoup d?arsenic et de différents liants ont été testés afin d?évaluer la stabilisation des contaminants dans la matrice de remblai. La méthode utilisée pour évaluer la stabilisation et la solidification des contaminants est le test de lixiviation en extracteur de Soxhlet. Les résultats géochimiques issus de ces essais ainsi que la caractérisation chimico-minéralogique des remblais lixiviés ont été analysés pour comprendre les phénomènes chimiques présents dans les remblais durant le temps de cure. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les sulfures présents dans les remblais étudiés (pyrite FeS2 et arsénopyrite FeAsS) s?oxydent et provoquent la dissolution des hydrates les plus vulnérables (dissolution de la portlandite Ca(OH)2 et/ou décalcification des gels CSH). Le calcium produit permet de précipiter les sulfates (essentiellement sous forme de gypse plus ou moins hydraté) et l?arsenic sous forme d?arséniates de calcium plus stables. Les différents liants utilisés donnent des résultats différents en termes de stabilisation et de solidification qui seront discutés dans cet article.

The United States is rapidly depleting many of its most important minerals and fuels. The first two Annual Reports by the Secretary of the Interior, under the Mining and Minerals Policy Act of 1970, made us acutely aware that the natural resources that enabled this Nation to attain an unprecedented growth in terms of economic well-being, and to set an example of independent strength through the democratic process, are finite. Once they are depleted, large imports will be required. Simultaneously, competition for available supplies, especially of petroleum, is increasing in the expanding European and Japanese industrial communities and in the underdeveloped nations of the world. Even before the crisis of late 1973, the oil-producing nations of the world, principally in the Middle East, but including Canada and Latin America, were recognizing that the worldwide need for crude oil, petroleum products, and natural gas could be translated into an unprecedented economic bargaining position. Thus, the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) raised the price of their crude twice during the first 6 months of 1973. By yearend the energy situation had be-come acute, and it seemed probable that regardless of current political developments, the era of cheap energy was over.

This publication contains 14,242 analyses of gas samples from oil and gas wells and natural gas pipelines in 40 States and 24 foreign countries. These gas samples were collected in the period 1917-85 as part of the Bureau of Mines survey for helium occurrences. The gas analyses contained herein were made by several methods over the period covered. Analytical work on samples collected early in the period was done on the Orsat apparatus. The one-cut apparatus and four-cut fractional distillation equipment were added later. A mass spectrometer was acquired in 1949 and used for all gas analyses made after that time. From 1917 to 1978, helium analyses were made on special helium analytical equipment designed and built by the Bureau of Mines Helium Operations Laboratory. In 1978, this apparatus was replaced in the quantitative helium analysis work by a gas chromatograph.

"Introduction In studying the mine disaster files of the Bureau of Mires for preparation of a bulletin on coal-mine explosions, a table was compiled covering various features of fan installations and the handling of air currents at the time of and after the disasters. As a sidelight on this discussion, there was tabulated the loss of life and number of men injured.Discussion of collected dataOf the 164 disasters tabulated, 148 were explosions, 14 were fires, and 2 involved both fire and explosion. The total loss of life was 4,158 and 412 were injured. There were 145 disasters in bituminous coal mines, 13 in anthratice mines, 2 in lignite mines, 1 in a cannel coal nine, and 3 in metal mines. By States, 35 took place in Pennsylvania; 17 in West Virginia; 16 in Oklahoma and Alabama; 15 in. Kansas and Illinois; 12 in Indiana; 7 in Colorado; 6 in Kentucky; 3 each in Ohio Tennessee and Wyoming; 2 each in Arkansas, Montana, Washington, Virginia, New Mexico and Utah and 1 each in Iowa, Missouri, Maryland, and California."

"l. IntroductionA reliable sampling system is the basis for an on-stream analyzer. This was realized in Outokumpu company when the development work of the Courier 300 On-Stream X-ray analysis system was started. Because Outokumpu Oy is a mining and mineral processing company, its engineers have been able to thoroughly test sampler prototypes in actual operating situations. The sampler development has been going for several years in close co-operation between company's concentrators, the Institute of Physics and the Instrument Division of Outokumpu Oy. The most active part of the work was done between 1969- 1972. Besides the reliable operation of a sampler special attention was paid to the representatively of the samples taken by the samplers. 2. The Courier 300 Sampling SystemThe sampling system comprises up to fourteen sampling circuits in one Courier analysis system. Each circuit consists of the following components:1. Primary sampler 2. Secondary sampler 3. Cleaner screen 4. Feeding tank5. Sample cell6. Timer-controlled sampler7. Pumps, sumps and pipesSecondary samplers, cleaner screen and feeding tanks are included in the secondary sct1npling system. The sample cells are located in the spectrometer cabinet of the analyzer."

Thermodynamic calculations based on the ideal system NiO - Fe203 - H2(g) - CO(g) - H2O(g) - CO2(g) show that it is not possible to selectively reduce nickel oxide in the presence of hematite because ferronickel is the zero-valent nickel-containing product. The calculations show that temperature, reducing atmosphere composition and oxide to reductant ratio have a marked effect on the nickel content of the ferronickel alloy and the amount of nickel reporting jn the alloy. The general trends based on the calculations correlltte well with experimental observations.
