In December 2009, the Italian High Speed Rail Network AV began running over the full 1000 km system length from Turin, at the foothills of the Alps to Salerno, on the seacoast south of the volcano Mt. Vesuvius. It runs through Alpine rivers, highly seismic active zones, mountains, river plains, and through some of the most densely populated areas in Europe as well as some of its most expensive real estate. The Italian High Speed Network?s technical/economic constraints and its regulatory/socio-environmental concerns well may mirror similar obstacles set to confront the nascent California High Speed Rail Program. The two types of constraints must be dealt with together to reach the best construction solution. It is estimated that more than 20% of Italian High Speed Rail Network costs were spent on ground engineering including over 150 km of tunnels, 200 km of viaducts and bridges and 650 km of embankments and trenches. However, it also is estimated that 25% of costs were spent on social and environmental integration of the new rail lines including over 6 square miles of green offsets, 160 km of anti-noise walls, and 300 agreements for socio-environmental work. This paper will look at four examples of innovative ground engineering solutions, each with its own intricate set of constraints: ? We look at the empirical evidence of coal block auctions in India to understand how competitive intensity affects the bid amounts in common value auctions. The results suggest that competitive intensity measured through the number of bidders for a coal block is instrumental in determining the bidding outcomes. The presence of higher numbers of bidders in the auction leads to higher bids - every additional bidder causes the bid amount to rise by INR 142.67 per tonne of coal for auctions studied for 127 coal blocks from 2014 to 2023. The paper also examines the moderating and mediating effect of competition on bids and on excess of bids from the comparative market price of coal from alternative source of Coal India Limited. The results indicate that competitive intensity does not have statistically significant impact on the relationship between common value of coal blocks and bids, neither as a moderator nor as a mediator. The strategic behavior of the bidders has also been observed as bidders have been seen to bid in a higher than market price in order to outbid the competitors.

Virtually from the date of its discovery in December 1928 the Oklahoma City oil and gas field, Oklahoma County, Okla., has attracted national and international attention. The history of the field has been associated closely with rules and regulations pertaining to production control and proration practices. Early development was rapid, and Oklahoma City soon attained the distinction of being the first major field in which the producing wells were over a mile in depth. Before the structural features of the reservoir had been disclosed every outpost well was considered a "wildcat", so complex appeared the underground geology, The wells not only were deep and the reservoir pressures high, but the production from the early wells was a high A.P.I. gravity oil, accompanied by large volumes of gas. Several "blow-outs" and fired occurred during the early development, and the close proximity of these now unusual events to a large city gave the field much publicity, both local and national. Later, when its production threatened to demoralize the market for oil and its products, the Oklahoma City field again attracted wide publicity. The then little understood geology of the underground reservoir and the diversity of ownership of the land overlying the producing structure made orderly development and production difficult to enforce. Proration was enforced with difficulty., and the, rate of production from the field continued to increase until, on August 4, 1931, martial law was declared in all prorated fields of the State, and most of the wells in the Oklahoma City field wore shut n. On October 9, 1931, permission was granted t o reopen and prod e the wells in the Oklahoma City field. The order permitting production of the wells provided that during the period beginning October 10 and extending to October 20, 1931, all wells in the field that hid not produced more oil than specified under the earlier proration orders and that had been shut in for the required 55-day period were permitted to produce 5 percent of their last potential during that 10-day period. On November 7, 1931, the Corporation Commission of Oklahoma issued an order which divided the Oklahoma City field into the Wilcox, Arbuckle, and Lower Simpson zones for proration purposes. Wells producing from the Wilcox zone were allowed to produce 4 1/2 percent of their potential5/ from November 1, 1931, to January 1, 1932; Arbuckle limestone wells were allowed to produce 250 barrels of oil daily; and Simpson sandstone wells which had a potential of over 2,000 barrels per day or which made 3 percent or more water were allowed to produce 200 barrels of oil per day.

Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An invitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold(which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14%within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%)throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

Most of the recent growth in nickel demand has been for the production of stainless steels and virtually all of it has been satisfied by new ferronickel and nickel pig iron projects. But "good" laterite resources are more and more difficult to find: Ni grades are decreasing while Fe contents are increasing and SiO2/MgO ratios vary from 1 to 3 and even higher if limonites are included. Predicting the smelting behaviour of such ores requires a more fundamental understanding of the thermodynamics of these systems in commercial operations. One valid question is thus whether these furnaces are at thermodynamic equilibrium or not. The present paper investigates this question, compares calculated and measured O2 partial pressures and mechanical/chemical slag loss ratios and concludes that ferronickel furnaces are not at thermodynamic equilibrium. This departure from expectation is actually to the operators’ advantage: the targeted ferronickel grades can be obtained at lower reduction potentials than calculated from pure thermodynamics.

THE Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the com-position as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash, Hardgrove grindability index, and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4 issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of delivered coal and "tipple" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) are valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation, control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background / experience, and the essential backing / support of the operations management team together leading to higher value delivery. Robust solutions can be realised, considerably minimising process variation, thus leading to process optimisation. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimised process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? In this paper, these questions and their possible answers are discussed."

NASA has received direction for lunar habitation beginning in 2024. Prior to then, it will be necessary to learn about how lunar soil can be used to promote civilization on the moon. Questions must be answered: ?Will it support plant life?,? ?Can it be used as a construction material?,? ?What is needed to maximize health and safety?,? and ?Will it affect equipment, tools, machinery, and clothes?? The only samples available for study came from the Apollo Missions. Because the expense of bringing more material back to Earth is prohibitive, there is not enough available to perform studies to answer the above questions. Hence, there is a great need for its synthesis. Most efforts to date have concentrated on making ?simulant? from single natural resources of volcanic rock. However, another possibility is to use resources here on Earth to extract the minerals of interest into concentrates or so-called ?separates? using traditional mineral processing techniques, and then mix the separates in appropriate ratios to simulate the lunar soil. In this paper, results from a study in which dry Road Norite outcrop and wet mill tailings from the Stillwater Mining Company?s Concentrator located near Nye, MT were examined. Of course, the in-side challenge is to make ?separates? from gangue minerals.

"The Quintette coal property lies in the Rocky Mountain foothills of northeastern British Columbia (see Figure 1). Quintette and the adjacent Bullmoose property of Teck Corporation are soon to become the first commercial coal mines in the Peace River Coal Field, which is estir1ated to contain 10 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal reserves.Denison Mines Limited acquired the original Quintette coal licenses in 1969 and 1970. Exploration began soon after and the first feasibility study was conducted in 1975. Denison devoted the following six years to extensive planning and feasibility studies of the project. During this period, the provincial and federal governments also undertook studies to assess infrastructure requirements and economic viability of development in this part of the province. Many of the proposed mine sites such as Bullmoose and Quintette were at least 100 to 150 kilometres from the towns of Chetwynd and Dawson Creek, the nearest centres serviced by good highways and a railroad, and a complete network of services would have to be provided if such mines were to be developed. The overall project became known as the North East Coal Development.Concurrently with the feasibility studies, numerous technical and sales missions to Japan were made by representatives of Canadian industry and government, culminating in January 1981 with agreements for Quintette Coal Limited and Teck Corporation to supply a total of 115 million tonnes 8 million tonnes per year for 15 years of primarily metallurgical coal to the Japanese Steel Industry."

The plant and processing site at Porgera has been built on a levelled mudstone ridge about lkm E of the mine. Excavation of 7xl06m3 of soil and rock was necessary to achieve the required area. The exposed mudstone belongs to the Chico Formation and is weak, sheared and readily breaks down by slaking upon exposure. Tectonic uplift and subsequent erosion have produced the present landscape of narrow bedrock ridges, with deep colluvium in the incised valleys. The deep excavation to a maximum of 60m, has rapidly unloaded the mudstone, and subsequent stress relief has caused rebound and dilation of the material. The processes of pore pressure equilibration, softening, progressive failure and loosening, combine to deteriorate the newly exposed rock mass. "The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units."

This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

THE township of Costerfield is situated in the parish of Costerfield, county of Dalhousie, and lies 6 miles east of Heathcote and 30 miles south-east of Bendigo. It is separated from Heathcote by the Mt. Ida Range, which forms the western boundary of the Silurian formation. It is situated at the head-waters of Tin-pot Creek, a small southerly tributary of the Deegay Ponds Creek, which flows east to the Goulburn River.The field was discovered in 1860 by two prospectors, Coster and Field, who were guided there by a shepherd, M Nicol Coster and Field had already discovered an antimony lode about three miles nearer Heathcote, when M Nicol offered to guide them to the larger outcrop. The main Costerfield reef at that time projected above the surface, and was white through oxidation, though the bluey sulphide showed on fracture. No alluvial gold of any consequence was obtained at Costerfield, but a little was obtained, at Redcastle, 7 miles to the north, and in some of the gullies to the east.Following its discovery there came a period of prosperity to Costerfield, while the mining operations were confined to the oxidized zone. The early success of mining at Costerfield was due to the gold values, and it is probable that the oxidized zone was secondarily enriched. The earliest available record of values is a crushing of Coster and Co. on the Antimony reef (now known as the Costerfield reef), when 200 tons from a depth of 70 ft. averaged 4 oz. per ton in July, 1861. At this time a crushing mill had not yet been erected at Costerfield, and the ore was carted and treated at Redcastle. The massive antimony ore, consisting of mixed oxides and sulphides, was separated by hand-picking as "marketable ore," and the remainder crushed for gold. A higher average is recorded from South Costerfield in September, 1861, when a 15' cwt. parcel...

These programs are managed by the Director and two Deputy Directors, who formulate general policy and program direction from the Washington, D.C., headquarters. A senior advisory staff, consisting of the Chief Staff Officer, Chief Scientist, and Chief Mining Engineer, provides advice and consultation to the Director on a wide range of scientific and technical matters and acts on behalf of the Director to maintain liaisons with other government agencies, mineral industries, and professional societies. Bureau program activities are classified into two major functions: (1) Developing new and improved technology that will make the production and processing of minerals more efficient, safer and more healthful for mineral workers and the public, and more compatible with a quality environment.

"Permanent magnets have been applied extensively to several electronic products such as printers, TV sets, microphones, microcomputers and headphones, presently manufactured in large scale by industrial economies. Sm-Co alloys represent about 20% of the world market for permanent magnets and their industrial processors generate 20-30% of magnetic scraps which can be recycled. This paper discusses a process route to recycle SmCo5 using acid treatment, solvent extraction of Sm and electrowinning of Co. The results confirm the feasibility of the alternative proposed. Basic operational variables are suggested as guidelines to design a plant for recycling magnetic scraps.The use of hydrometallurgical processes to recycle scraps from the industry of permanent magnets has been suggested in some recent papers related to recycling of metallic alloys [ 1 ]. These research efforts might be understood as a worldwide tendency towards the development of self sustainable metallurgical processes which mean the reduction of environmental impacts.CETEM -Center for Mineral Technology leads in Brazil several research programs concerning recycling and treatment of industrial residues. The work on samarium purification and concentration by solvent extraction, producing also a solution of cobalt sulfate as partially reported here is one of these programs. The Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek prospects occur in an area of ~3.0 km by 2.5 km (~7.5 km2) in the Hauraki goldfield. The prospects are hosted by andesitic to dacitic flows, autoclastic breccias and localised pyroclastic and air fall deposits. Jubilee and Sovereign prospects lie along the northern and southern parts of the Waitekauri Fault, respectively, whereas Scotia is located ~1 km to the E, and Jasper Creek a further ~1.2 km to the ENE. Wall rocks are typically intensely altered, although the degree of alteration becomes more variable east of Scotia and at Jasper Creek. Alteration minerals include quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite, smectite and calcite. Several of these minerals have distributions that show distinct zonation with adularia most abundant at Sovereign and Jasper Creek, but restricted to shallow levels at Scotia. Illite occurs throughout Sovereign and Jubilee plus the western margin of Scotia where it grades into interstratified illite-smectite; smectite predominates at Jasper Creek. Veins are uncommon and typically narrow, but show distinct zonations. Quartz veins are more abundant at Sovereign and Jubilee, whereas calcite veins are more abundant at Scotia and Jasper Creek. Laumontite veins occur at Scotia, and rare clinoptilolite, mordenite and stilbite veinlets with calcite occur at Jasper Creek. Fluid inclusion in quartz and calcite homogenised between 141¦ to 272¦C and trapped a dilute solution with an apparent salinity of less than 2.6 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Homogenisation temperatures are hottest at Sovereign (average 241¦C) and Jubilee (average 239¦C), cooler at Scotia (average 204¦C) and coolest at Jasper Creek (average 162¦C). Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest the water table was 680 m to 750 m above sea level at Sovereign and Jubilee, 450 m at Scotia and 225 m at Jasper Creek. The current data suggest three scenarios that can explain why Sovereign and Jubilee are deep and hot, whereas Jasper Creek is cool, shallow and marginal; 1.   some or all of the prospects may represent separate overlapping hydrothermal system, 2.   a high-relief hydrothermal system on the side of volcano with an inclined water table and outflow towards Jasper Creek, and 3.   a low-relief hydrothermal system that has been either tilted or block faulted with greatest uplift and erosion to the west.

The tests reported in this paper were made in the East Texas field in the summer and fall of 1932 as a part of the Bureau of Mines study of the operation of flowing wells and reservoir performance; and to determine, if possible, the minimum reservoir pressure necessary to produce the wells in this field by natural flow through different sizes of flow strings. The minimum reservoir pressure that would be required to maintain natural flow through 2 1/2-inch tubing was determined experimentally for the existing energy conditions in the East Texas field. With the present available data, however, it 'is impossible to predict accurately or to determine by calculation the necessary energy requirements for maintaining the vertical flow of oil and gas mixtures under all conditions. Although some valuable data were obtained which seem to have application to the solution of problems involving vertical flow, this important research of the petroleum industry is so involved that more study of the complicating factors influencing the flow of oil-gas mixtures through vertical pipes is required. Versluys4 has presented a mathematical analysis of the vertical flow of oil and gas mixtures which covers the fundamental theories of the problem-although, as he points cut, there are factors, particularly friction, slippage, and solubility of the gas in the oil that must be mown or determined experimentally before the equations he has developed can be applied to actual

Flooding of open pits now receives considerable attention from the mining industry as an option that may minimize environmental impacts, particularly when anoxia in pit lake deep waters can effectively eliminate oxidation of pit-wall sulphides. A state-of-the-art, coupled physical-geochemical pit lake model is used to verify that a cost-effective, environmentally responsible closure strategy for the open pit at the Kori Kollo gold mine, southeast of La Paz, Bolivia is to adopt a controlled, two-stage infilling of the open pit upon cessation of operations. By filling the pit initially with highly saline waters from evaporation/infiltration basins and naturally saline deep groundwater, followed by capping with fresh river water, a very stable and strongly stratified pit lake will be developed. In addition, the stratification will result in the isolation of metal-rich saline bottom waters from surface waters of good quality. Results of this model provide defensible predictions of the physical stability and evolution of water quality in the Kori Kollo pit lake over time. The model results indicate that anoxic conditions will develop below the fresh-saline water boundary within 1 to 2 years, followed by the rapid onset of sulphate reducing conditions in the bottom waters. Hydrogen sulphide produced by sulphate reduction will readily react with dissolved metals to form highly insoluble metal sulphides. The process results in the gradual removal of metals from the water column and the concomitant improvement of water quality over time. A notable benefit of this strategy is that it can be fully integrated with other mine site closure options as well as future environmental management strategies. The proposed plan allows for: 1) safe storage of saline evaporation basin waters; 2) the potential for passive treatment in anoxic bottom waters of ARD seepages from other mine site operations should they arise; and 3) a repository for future reactive wastes that could be effectively isolated in a physically and chemically stable environment.

Man has been engaged in the construction of tunnels in. rock for several thousand years. During that time, methods of tunneling have changed drastically. Hordes of men chipping away at the tunnel face have been replaced by mechanical drills and explosives and by tunnel boring machines. Spoil is no longer carried on the backs of humans, but is now removed by trains, trucks or conveyor systems. These and other changes have had the effect of greatly increasing the rate of tunneling, while at the same time, greatly decreasing the potential dangers to workmen. Although the techniques, equipment and material used for tunneling are being continually improved, rock tunneling is still a slow and expensive process. Significant improvements and innovations are needed to reduce the cost and time required for tunneling if we are to fully utilize the subsurface to aid in the solution of urban problems and in the conservation of resources. This report is intended to facilitate the orderly development of tunneling technology by focusing attention on the inadequacies of rock tunneling and the improvements that are needed. The data presented were derived from the results of a comprehensive questionnaire that was completed during the summer of 1969 by more than 600 individuals and organizations in 17 countries. Table 1 lists the countries and the number of replies from each. Appendix A contains a summary profile of the national responses, while the text presents the results and a brief analysis of the conclusions that might be derived from the data in the questionnaire. The data shown in Appendix A represent the consensus opinion of each of the 17 nations without regard to the number of individual replies or the amount of tunneling activity that is represented. The national consensus was determined for each country by a plurality of the individual responses, in some cases modified by the opinion of the rapporteur. Tire above procedures can lead to situations which are misleading. For example, experience and activity arc a rational basis for analysis; but, if national replies are weighted on this basis (i.e., number of responses), informed and valuable opinion of less active countries would probably be overwhelmed and lost. In analysing the data on the basis of national responses without weighting, it becomes apparent that many of the same problems exist under a given set of conditions regardless of the number of tunnels that have been driven.
