"The emission of hydrocarbon gases from coal beds and contiguous strata causes many accidents in coal—mine workings, the number of fatalities so caused being second only to those due to falls of roof. Gases tend to increase in amount with depth of coal mining, hence the danger of explosion is increased with depth. The pressure of the gas in virgin—coal areas at a distance from mine workings likewise tends to increase with depth from the surface, probably due to corresponding increase in hydraulic head and possibly, when the gas is held in nonporous formations, to greater ground pressure. The rise in gas pressure with depth under usual conditions is shown in wells drilled from the surface and in some coal fields in drill holes into the face of workings; however, under normal conditions of coal formation gas does not issue into workings under high pressure because the coal and adjacent strata have many bedding and joint planes which allow the gas to escape freely at the face of the workings. The rare occurrence of instantaneous outbursts of gas, with violent effects referred to later, constitute the exception.Variations of volume and pressure of fire-damp or methane found in different coal beds by wells at a distance from mine workings, are analogous to variations in volume and pressure of natural gas found in different gas and oil sands, although in general the pressure tends to increase with the depth. Sometimes, however, in tight sands higher in the formation the pressure of gas therein is abnormally high, and on drilling the well deeper gas in the lower strata may be found at lower pressure."

As stated in the preface, the nomenclature to be adopted for weights and measures has presented great difficulty. Agricola uses, throughout, the Roman and the Romanized Greek scales, but in many cases he uses these terms merely as lingual equivalents for the .German quantities of his day. Moreover the classic language sometimes failed him, whereupon he coined new Latin terms adapted from the Roman scale, and thus added further confusion. We can, perhaps, make the matter dearer by an illustration of a case in weights. The Roman centumpondium, composed of zoo librae, the old German ceniner of 100 pfundt, and the English hundredweight of 1112 pounds can be called lingual equivalents. The first weighs about 494,600 Troy grains, the second 721,900, and the third 784,000. While the divisions of the centumpondium and the centner are the same, the Libra is divided into 12 unciae and the pfundt into 16 unizen, and in most places a summation of the units given proves that the author had in mind the Roman ratios. However, on p. 509 he makes the direct statement that the centumpondium weighs 146 librae, which would be about the correct weight if the centumpondium referred to was a ceniner. If we take an example such as " each centumpondium of lead contains one uncia of silver", and reduce it according to purely lingual equivalents, we should find that it runs 24.3 Troy ounces per short ton, on the basis of Roman values, and 18.25 ounces per short ton, on the basis of old German. If we were to translate these into English lingual equivalents of one ounce per hundredweight, then the value would be 17.9 ounces per short ton. [ ]

EFFORTS to obtain definite quantitative data when employing the currently used bubble pick-up method1,2 as a pre-flotation investigation tool led to the adoption of the magnifying mirror method and the microscopic method modifications. Quantitative data obtained by these two methods were converted into bubble pick-up indices and bubble pick-up coefficients. Rough correlations were established between the calculated indices and the results of contact angle testing as well as actual flotation under the same conditions. The basic steps of the magnifying mirror method are as follows: 1—mixing 200 ml distilled water, sized and cleaned mineral particles of approximately 0.5 g, pH regulator, and flotation reagents in a glass beaker; 2—swirling the mineral particles to the center of the beaker to leave a clear circumference; 3—pressing an air bubble against the mineral particles for about 1 sec, and then moving the mineralized air bubble to the clear part of the beaker; and 4—dropping all the attached mineral particles of the air bubble by tapping the bubble holder, and counting the number of the dropped particles by looking at the magnified image in the mirror positioned beneath the beaker. This method is impractical for mineral particles which are transparent in water or finer than 200 mesh. The microscopic method is essentially similar to the above described magnifying mirror method, with the exception that the mineralized air bubble was drawn up into the bubble holder and subsequently discharged onto an externally placed watch glass, where the number of pick-up particles was counted with the aid of a microscope or hand lens. Drying was necessary when the discharged liquid interfered with the counting. The results of the bubble pick-up tests can be simply expressed in the form of the actual count. However, this can be misleading because the number of pick-up particles varies not only with the size of bubble but also with the size of particles. This short-coming is largely remedied by the use of the bubble pick-up index. as calculated from the following equation: PI = (pn/p) 100 [1] in which PI and pn are respectively the pick-up index and the number of pick-up particles under any test conditions, and p is the maximum number of pick-up particles of the same mineral under optimum flotation conditions, with the same size holder and particle. The bubble pick-up coefficient is a term coined to denote the difference between the bubble pick-up index of mineral particles in a liquid and that of the same mineral-liquid mixture plus a chemical reagent at the same pH value. For example, the difference between the pick-up index of a naturally floatable bituminous coal in a solution of water and kerosene and that of the same coal in water alone is a bubble pick-up coefficient. Compared with the contact angle method, the quantitative bubble pick-up method is inferior in accuracy but superior in sensitivity. Other advantages of the bubble pick-up method are that the apparatus can be easily assembled, the mineral sample is conventionally prepared, and the test procedure is relatively simple. References S. The electrowinning of beryllium from beryllium oxide (BeO) using a molten-salt electrolyte composed of 56 LiF-37 BeF2-7 BeO (mole-percent) was investigated. Anodes made of porous carbon were found to be superior in current-carrying capacity and gave a lower cell voltage than other types of anode material tested. When porous carbon anodes were used) the resultant increase in anode area prevented anode passivation. The cell voltage was 3.3 volts) and electrode current efficiencies of 50 to 70 percent were obtained. The electrodeposited beryllium was recovered as beryllium powder or was coalesced to metal beads by heating to 1,300° C.

The use of solid state track deters allows totally passive, integrating measurements of 222Rn (radon) or of 220Rn (thoron) plus radon. A track-detecting solid is placed in a holder that is closed by a selective membrane and exposed to the atmosphere of interest to produce an accurately time-averaged record over times of interest that range typically from a week to a year. By selection of the proper membranes, dosimetry can be done for radon or for the sum of radon and thoron. A different membrane is appropriate for measuring radon under humid conditions such as are found in the ground. Large numbers of measurements have been made with these systems both in the ground, where radon levels are high, and in indoor environments, where levels are orders of magnitude less. Calibrations have been carried out at both high and low concentrations of radon. New results in the air at the site of the Shirley Basin mine and mill give reproducible results with month-long integrating periods. The off-site background levels are in the range 0.7 to 1.0 pCi/l (26-37 Bq/m3). The average yearlong on-site level is 1.5 pCi/l (56 Bq/m3); at the mill it is 2.6 pCi/l (96 Bq/m3); and the level measured at the backhoe in the open pit mine is 3.9 pCi/l (144 Bq/m3). The region of significantly elevated radon levels is confined to a radius of 1.6 km of the mine and mill. All of the on-site radon concentrations are less than but comparable to the typical values found in the living areas of modern energy-efficient homes.

Linking Ashford International Station to the new Channel Tunnel Rail Link required over 5000 rotary bored and CFA (continuous flight auger) piles to form tunnel walls and viaduct foundations and to support overbridges and trackside barriers.. Much of the work was carried out close to the existing railway infrastructure. Plunged columns were used to maintain traffic flows over the tunnel site during construction. The results of an extensive programme of vertical and lateral load tests on bored and CFA piles in heavily overconsolidated Weald Clay are compared to illustrate the relative importance of stress relief and of prolonged exposure to bentonite. The completion on schedule of this major piling and ground engineering contract (value £30 million) demonstrates that collaborative working in partnership produced cost effective solutions to a series of challenging technical and logistical problems.

Remote control is usually associated with deep mine, continuous mining machines. This is because thin-seam operation precludes an onboard operator's compartment or the mine has approval to conduct extended cut mining. Using a tethered or radio-linked control box, the remote operator is typically situated 3 to 15 m (10 to 50 ft) from the working face. The operator receives direct operational cues through senses like vision, hearing and feel. Remote control is sometimes touted as a safety feature. However, this is not always true, as operators are not provided protection from roof and rib falls or being crushed between the machine and a rib. Remote control operators are also left exposed to dust and noise. Teleoperation described here is the computer-based, distant control of mining machinery from a protected operator compartment located out of the line-of-sight from the operational site. Video, sound and other sensory information are gathered through sensors and electronically transmitted to and displayed at the operator's location. The teleoperator responds to the information and makes decisions that are initiated by control devices (usually switches). These control commands are then electronically transmitted to the re¬mote machinery and the appropriate machine function(s) are carried out. Teleoperation increases the safety of mining machine operators as it removes them from the immediate vicinity of hazards. The US Bureau of Mines' involvement with teleoperation dates back to 1979. Following feasibility studies, a highwall milling system (HMS) was developed and tested. A deep, thin-seam, room-and-pillar system (TSRPS) has been designed and is currently being surface tested.

The Kell Process has been developed for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) and base metals from sulphide flotation concentrates. The process has been successfully tested on several different sulphide flotation concentrates, including those from the UG2 chromitite horizon and the Platreef mafic/ultramafic layer. It has been shown to provide high (>95 per cent) and selective extraction efficiencies for the key valuable metals, i.e. Pt, Pd, Rh, Au, Ni, Co, and Cu. The Kell Process consists of several commercially proven unit operations. S, Ni, Co, and Cu are first selectively removed by use of a pressure oxidation step during which the dissolution of PGMs is minimized. The residue from pressure oxidation is subjected to a thermal treatment to ensure efficient PGM recovery by subsequent chlorination. All the core steps are very similar to well-proven conventional unit operations in common use, as are the subsequent metal recovery steps to provide marketable end products. Typical metallurgical responses of flotation concentrates from UG2 and Platreef to the Kell Process are provided, and key outcomes of an energy comparison study with smelting are summarized in this paper. Kell presents a potentially substantial improvement in PGM concentrate processing technology, in terms of economics via much-reduced power costs, ease of processing, and various environmental benefits. It allows for the treatment of high-chromium low-grade 'dirty' concentrates, such as secondary concentrates from the platinum industry's 'mill-float-mill-float' (MF2) flotation circuits and concentrates from retreatment of tailings. It allows greater concentrate mass pulls, has higher tolerance to gangue intergrowths in concentrates, and its use can provide substantial increases in overall PGM recovery. Its adoption would be a step change in the platinum industry, and given the commercially proven unit operations embodied in the Kell Process, at much-reduced risk compared with other more experimental technologies. Since the initial process development work, significant improvements and refinements have been introduced as a result of further compre¬hensive testing and process modelling. Pilot-scale testing and engineering study work is in progress for several selected sites.

AFTER more than fifty years of investigation and continuing failure in service, a satisfactory mechanism to explain stress corrosion cracking in homogeneous alloys is still lacking. The relative chemical activity of grain boundaries and adjacent grains, inferred from the boundary structure, has been used to explain intergranular cracking in a brass.' This concept is probably correct as a general hypothesis, but it requires much more extensive development in order to explain satisfactorily the observed phenomena. For example, the specific function of the solute in an alloy must be considered, because intergranular failure does not occur in pure metals,' which are structurally similar to homogeneous alloys. Also, in this connection, an inter crystalline fracture path in binary copper alloys can be changed to a transcrystalline path by relatively small ternary additions.' The fracture path in ß brass is predominantly transcrystalline,' in contrast with an inter crystalline path in a brass. Whether the two different fracture paths are the result of a difference in composition, crystal structure, or the state of long range order is unknown and cannot be determined with ß brass, because only the ordered state can be obtained at room temperature. The study of chemical activity at structural sites in the Cu-Zn system is restricted by the formation of opaque films in an ammonia environment in which stress corrosion cracking is generally observed. Furthermore, both components of the alloy are chemically active and the interpretation of observations is therefore relatively complicated. The Cu-Au system is a better choice for the purpose of studying structural factors. In particular, CuAu is very susceptible to cracking in ferric chloride and opaque films are not formed in this solution; it may be obtained in different states of long and short range order; and, finally, only copper is oxidized in dilute ferric chloride, which considerably simplifies the chemical problem. To provide information necessary for a more general explanation of stress corrosion cracking in homogeneous solid solutions, the following structural factors have been investigated in a Cu-Au alloy having a composition corresponding to Cu,Au: 1) the effect of long and short range order; 2) the structural sites from which copper is removed from the annealed and cold worked polycrystalline alloy; and 3) the effect of annealing time and temperature on structural reactions in the cold worked alloy. Experimental Procedure A Cu-Au alloy of nominal Cu3Au composition was cast from cathode copper and high purity gold and fabricated into sheet and wire. Chemical analysis for copper and gold indicated 48.92 wt pct Cu and 51.01 pct Au. Quantitative spectrographic analysis indicated 0.01 pct Ag, 0.002 pct Pd, 0.001 pct Pb, and 0.002 pct Fe, with traces of magnesium, silicon, and zinc. Presumably most of the remaining 0.055 pct corresponds to the limits of analytical precision. Heat treatments of wire and sheet were conducted in argon or vacuum. Magnesia minerals are included in most iron ore sinter mixes to provide the MgO requirements of blast furnace slag. The properties of these minerals have an influence on the eventual sintering properties of the mixes. A detailed study was undertaken of serpentine and dolomite and the use of limestone, olivine and magnesite was also investigated. A consideration of particle properties indicated that as these materials calcine a reduction in size can occur together with cracking and changes in surface properties. These changes could affect the permeability of the sintering bed and sintering performance. Studies of sintering reactions showed that magnesium and calcium, formed from the calcination of dolomite, are extremely mobile before the formation of melt. Evidence suggests that the movement of these oxides into surrounding areas is via a solid-state diffusion process. The diffusion of Ca into the surrounding hematite particles is faster than that of Mg, resulting in the formation of dicalcium ferrite and magnetite or magnesioferrite, the last two subsequently being converted to dicalcium ferrite in the presence of Ca with removal of Mg from the structure as ferroan periclase. Studies of pilot-plant sinters indicated that reaction mechanisms formulated from the bench-scale studies were occurring in actual sintering processes. The differences in sintering reactions between dolomite and serpentine were considered to be the major cause of differences in the availability of lime for bonding phase formation. Pilot-scale studies indicated that the sintering properties of a mix containing dolomite could be improved by increasing the basicity of the sinter mix while keeping the MgO level constant

Analysis of reported injuries for off-highway haul trucks indicated that 42.7% were slip and fall, and of these 34.1% occurred mounting and dismounting the machine. Redesign of the lower steps was concluded to provide the most overall improvement for increased safety and accident reduction. Various existing, innovative and conceptual designs were reviewed and evaluated. The most promising candidate designs were the four-spring supported lower steps and the center tube mounted lower steps. Both configurations proved to be viable designs as they passed successfully human factors and survivability tests conducted at a large copper mine.

"Abstract Deep foundations of buildings using driven ductile iron micropiles TRIM solutions, leads to recognized advantages, from technical, schedule and economic points of view. High production rates together with the possibility of using conventional equipment, duly adapted, confer this solution a high versatility.The aim of this paper is to describe the main design criteria adopted for the foundations of the Church ""Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes"" building in Lisbon - Portugal. In addition, results of a full scale load test carried out at site are presented, confirming the adequacy of the solution to the geological and geotechnical scenario, which is characterized by the proximity of the Tagus River Basin as well as the presence of heterogeneous landfill material and alluvial layers of soft clay (muds).1. INTRODUCTION Located on the right bank of the Tagus River, in Lisbon, the new Church building of ""Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes"", patroness of fisherman and navigators, with three or four upper floors, is surrounded by a school and by new residential buildings.The Tagus River basin is known by its alluvial soft soils, achieving, in certain areas, more than 50m meters depth, challenging the construction of new facilities due to the significant unfavorable geotechnical conditions.With a modern an unusual architecture, allusive to the ships used by the Portuguese navigators, the building has a reinforced concrete structure, with one basement and three upper floors. A bell tower with about 40m high, emerging from the structure, marks the landscape with the presence of this religious building (figure 2).For all the reasons previously described, geotechnical engineers play a crucial role on the design of valid foundation solutions, from both technical and economic point of view. Ideally, the solutions adopted should be supported by full scale load tests, performed at site, so that design assumptions could be verified and adjusted on time."

INTRODUCTION The Brightwater conveyance system project in King County, Washington consists of constructing about 21 km (13 mile) of effluent and combined influent and effluent tunnels. The influent tunnels will collect sanitary sewerage from the service area and convey it to the new wastewater treatment plant (WTP) site at Route 9 in Woodinville, Snohomish County, Washington. The effluent tunnels will convey treated effluent from the WTP to an outfall at Puget Sound. The tunnels will be constructed primarily under residential areas, busy suburban roads and state highways. This 21 Km (13-mile) soft ground tunneling project faced many design challenges because of the geologic and hydrostatic conditions, long tunnel reaches, and large overburden depths. Boring depths typically varied from 45.7 M (150 ft) to 114 M(375 ft) with a maximum depth of 185.6 M (566 ft) deep. Conventional empirical methods for non-mountain terrain based on a 1:1 ratio of drilled footage per foot of tunnel bore (National Research Council, 1984) for evenly spaced borings provided a good start for the Phase 1 explorations. However a continuation of this approach with closer spacing was deemed inadequate by the geotechnical team for efficiently allocating geotechnical exploration resources for the final design. This paper presents a rational approach that was used to evaluate the value of a particular geotechnical exploration boring, pump test or other in-situ test. The method of analysis, which was initially developed for rock tunnels (Einstein et al., 1978), was modified for the Brightwater project. The method considers the potential construction cost risks resulting from variable geologic conditions, the cost and reliability of the geotechnical exploration and the earned value (cost risk reduction) of performing the geotechnical exploration. "Highwall miners have been widely used to extract additional coal reserves from existing surface operations, particularly on contour operations in the Appalachian coalfields. Using a continuous miner cutting head, coal may be extracted from significant depths (such as 150 m), leaving behind an array of web and barrier pillars with the purpose of maintaining highwall stability. This method inherently involves elevated risks to both equipment and personnel due to proximity to and increased exposure time near highwalls. As a result, modern operations should actively design web and barrier pillars to maximize extraction while providing adequate stability. The ARMPS-HWM software, an empirical-based program created for the design of web and barrier pillars at highwall mining operations, is one such approach. The calculated stability factor is compared with empirically established guidelines produced from examining case histories.The ARMPS-HWM program is a handy tool for initial design, but understanding the site’s structurally significant geologic features and geomechanical behavior is important and may potentially increase extraction. We created a two-dimensional numerical model using FLAC3D and calibrated it to ensure pillar strength, closely following the Mark- Bieniawski formula for a typical range of pillar geometries and overburden properties. The development of pillar stresses along a highwall panel was then numerically investigated as mining progressed, and the stress distribution between barrier pillars was found to be asymmetric, which can result in an over-design of the closeout web pillars if tributary area loading is assumed. Finally, the importance of adequate barrier pillar stability is highlighted."

Construction law in general and the law of deep foundations in particular continues to develop rapidly, particularly in the areas of risk allocation. Public and private owners are increasingly using contractual disclaimers to shift the risk of differing site conditions to contractors, and courts are increasingly willing to enforce these contractual devices. Perhaps also in an effort to control costs, public and private owners are turning to design-build contracting techniques. While design-build offers many advantages over traditional project delivery systems, it does not answer all of the risk-allocation questions that frequently arise. Even in design-build, problems with unanticipated subsurface conditions and defective design are not easily addressed. Finally, developments in electronic commerce present the potential to transform the construction industry.

The New Hope field was selected for study by; Bureau of lanes engineers because many problems met by, the operators during development and operation were unique to petroleum-engineering experience. Solving these problems is believed to have doubled the ultimate recovery of oil from the field. Since the discovery well was 'completed, in April 1943, an oil-productive area of 4,950 acres- has been delineated by the drilling of 64 wells, four of which were dry holes. Four oil-bearing reservoirs - the Bacon oolitic limestone, and the Hill, Pittsburg) and Elledge sandstones, all, in the Trinity group of the Lower Cretaceous series-- have been penetrated at depths ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet. Three of these reservoirs were found to be closed-type or solution gas-drive reservoirs, and one - the Hill - was an open-type or water-drive reservoir. During the course of the study, the Tide Water Associated, Oil Co. and -Seaboard al Co. of Delaware made available to the writers all well records, electric logs; and coring, production,, and pressure data. The ,writers performed Certain field and laboratory- tests on cores of ,the reservoir racks and' samples -of the reservoir Oils. Analyses of cores from the four reservoirs showed average .porosities ranging from 10 to 18 percent, average permeabilities of 17 to 297 millidarcys, and -average 'connate water contents ranging from 25.4 to 30.6 percent. Subsurface and recombined samples of reservoir oils indicated that the oils in the Bacon Hill, and Pittsburg reservoirs contained ,206 to 422 cubic feet of gas in solution per barrel initially, and that the, reservoir oils were undersaturated with gas. No samples' of oil from the Elledge reservoir were analyzed, and because of meager data this reservoir was not studied in detail. 4 The presence of free 'gas' or a' gas cap, however, indicated that the oil in the Elledge reservoir was saturated with gas. The rapid decline in pressures in- the' four reservoirs during the 'first year of operation alarmed the operators and provoked them to investigate the reservoir conditions to determine the cause.

THE information obtained by examining and analyzing the core drillings from 15 diamond-drill holes shows that with the proper equipment little difficulty should be experienced while sinking the shafts at the 15 selected sites. Although a number of holes penetrated formations containing a high percentage of silica,, the health hazard from dust can be removed by using proper dust-control equipment. Methane was detected in small amounts in only one (hole 5) of the boreholes. The methane hazard should present no difficulty if adequate ventilation is employed while sinking the shafts.

Sustainable development is at odds with reality in the minerals industry. Increasing world population and aspirations are leading to increased energy and mineral consumption. Non-renewable fossil fuels are being exploited at a much faster rate than they are being discovered. Mineral reserves are diminishing and of lower grade. Despite recycling, many of the economic reserves of the rarer metals on which technological society has come to depend are being depleted, and many of the bulk metals are being exploited at ever increasing rates. And yet, mining continues, with a long-term downtrend in commodity prices, matched by more efficient mining and processing. Will society turn to a low carbon economy before fossil fuels are depleted? Will prices come to better reflect the full cost of mineral production? Will technology save us, or is it at the root of the problem? The key drivers continue to be an ever increasing aspirational population and the law of supply and demand, rather than sustainability considerations. The paper illustrates this with examples of worldwide and Australian data.

La actividad bacteriana se define como la capacidad de adaptación que tienen las bacterias en medios lixiviantes para elevar la velocidad de oxidación del ión ferroso y convertirlo en férrico y es el mecanismo para la lixiviación del sulfuro primario o calcopirita, el resultado de la interacción de las bacterias ferrooxidantes, el oxígeno y el control de ácido que mantienen un pH por debajo de 2.1. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala las pruebas de lixiviación de concentrados que incluyen estos últimos conceptos, con el objetivo de evaluar la factibilidad técnica y económica de obtener licores de cobre que puedan ser aprovechados utilizando la capacidad existente de extracción por solventes y electrodepositación de la planta LESDE Toquepala.

Residual aeolian placers (RAPs) are formed by the wind, by preferential entrainment and removal of small and low-density detritusfrom a pre-existing, typically sedimentary sequence containing heavy minerals. Heavy minerals that are resistant to chemical alteration and either soft and malleable (gold), or extremely hard (diamond, sapphire, ruby, etc), are concentrated as a residual on the wind deflation surface, typically in the interstices between larger resistant clasts. RAPs form preferentially in arid or semi arid areas, where the vegetation is sparse or absent, and where topography and surface gradients are low, but may also form on beaches and in periglacial environments. RAPs consist of a continuous or discontinuous, planar or gently undulating horizon of heavy minerals in a single-clast-thick pavement of resistant pebbles, cobbles, or boulders, which mantles the present topography or palaeo-topography. Extreme wind erosion and surface deflation may condense the full pre-existing sequence into a layer of heavy minerals only. The grade of RAPs is substantially higher than in the precursor deposit, and commonly much higher than those typically found in most other placer types. Aside from their general occurrence as a thin pavement of resistant clasts, the best indicators of residual aeolian gold placers are the presence of wind-eroded stones (ventifacts) on the pavement, and the distinctive and unique shapes of aeolian gold grains themselves. The shape of the gold grains is progressively transformed by sand blasting during placer development, from grains with thickened rims, to toroidal grains on which the rims are æsplitÆ and peened inward toward the grain centre on one or both of the grain sides, to hemispherical or sub-spherical grains that are fully encapsulated by the in-turned rims. Gold that has undergone aeolian shape transformation is difficult to entrain and transport away from the site of aeolian concentration by anything other than mass movement or glacial processes. It is also easily retained by commercial recovery plants of any configuration.
