Australian researchers have developed new technologies aimed at improving safety and productivity at openpit mines. A data acquisition and feedback system for electric rope shovels has been shown to substantially reduce cycle times and decrease excessive machine duty caused by stalls. This data acquisition system was developed by the Cooperative Research Center for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). It has been tested on a P&H 4100A shovel at Coal & Allied’s Hunter Valley operations and a P&H 4100XPB at BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s Goonyella Riverside Mine in Central Queensland. In addition, CMTE member P&H Mine Pro Services has used the technology to acquire field data from a P&H 4100XPBrope shovel at RAG’s Belle Ayr Mine in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin.

THE PROBLEM Two and a half years have gone by since the December, 1976 Civil Engineering article on subway costs caused such a furore. What has happened in this interval? Even after discounting the crushing inflation rate, costs are still increasing, and there is no sign of a turndown, even in the rate of increase. Some steps outlined in the article have been taken. In April this year, the first D.O.T.-sponsored Peer Review Group, made up of managers of other transit properties, met in Boston to review MBTA's $500 million Red Line Extension-Northwest for cost effectiveness. While the impact of a review at the end of the design phase, with substantial segments under contract, cannot be as effective as a review early in the design phase, it is nevertheless a start. This first meeting will be followed by a review of Boston's Orange Line relocation, the final design for which is just underway. In the industry at large two facts are evident: 1. We are failing to reduce underground construction costs. 2. Underground construction is in danger of pricing itself out of the market place. It has always been a greater challenge to design a Chevvy than to design a Cadillac, but it is the Chevvy we need today. Much attention has been focussed in the past on engineering design in the narrow sense: areas such as ground loading conditions and concrete design. This paper reflects the challenges encountered during the construction of the light rail tunnels under Boyle Heights, in Los Angeles, California. Equipped with two state-of-the-art EPB TBMs, the construction team undertook the mining of twin bored tunnels in the Los Angeles alluvium. The gassy underground conditions dictated many aspects of the design of the tunnels, as well as the tools and means used for their construction. This paper will detail the challenges encountered during construction, as well as the means, methods and logistics used on the project. Discussion includes: EPB TBM machines with some very unique/specific features; complex assembly sequence due to limited shaft access; final precast concrete liner with double gaskets; NATM cross passage excavation in soft ground and below the water table; compensation grouting; mucking shaft arrangement.

Recent advances in GPS, machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50mm (2 inches).Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining – even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste: tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine: real time productivity monitoring: detailed post accident safety analysis: tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. Upbeat, surprisingly so, might describe the mood at the2002 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Phoenix, AZ. More than 4,000 mineral professionals gathered for three days of education, networking and product perusal. The Annual Meeting featured the theme, “Minerals for the Future@ SME” at the Feb. 25-27 gathering. Meeting attendance reached 4,039along with 479 exhibit booths show-casing 325 companies. Exhibitors found a good mix of industry types:37% from mining, 19% from processing, 20% from manufacturing and 28% from environment, education and government.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) study in the Russian Exploration Area at the northern equatorial Mid Atlantic Ridge began after signing the contract with International Seabed Authority in 2012. In order to evaluate the SMS resources in the course of exploration the major and rare metals with economic value should be determined. The evaluation is based on geochemistry and mineralogy and particularly on the type of rare metals occurrence in the SMS. As a case study research of the Semyenov cluster of SMS deposits have been conducted.

The proposed Second Avenue Subway Project in New York City is approximately 8.5 miles long, up to a depth of 120 feet beneath grade and runs the length of the eastern side of the island of Manhattan from Harlem in the north to the financial district in the south. It will reduce overcrowding and delays on the existing parallel line, improving travel for both city and suburban commuters, and upgrading access to mass transit for residents of the East Side of Manhattan. This subway line will have 16 new stations providing transfers to the existing Metro-North commuter rail service and to New York City Transit subway lines and bus services. The first phase of construction includes two TBM rock tunnels 2.4 miles long and two new large and shallow rock cavern stations with clear span openings ranging from 70 to 100 feet and length in excess of 1000 feet with 615 feet center platform, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 20 feet to 40 feet. The design methodology for these large and shallow rock caverns consists of using well known empirical methods for initial estimate of support requirements and then two and three dimensional continuum and discontinuum analyses for verification of the selected excavation sequence and support system. This paper describes the analysis and design methodologies used for the two large and shallow rock caverns with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is a non-profit organization whose objectives are public education about the mineral industries. It also recognizes outstanding accomplishments in and contributions to the fields of fuel and mineral resources.

The Fifth International Heavy Minerals Conference (HMC) was held Oct. 16-19, 2005, at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort in Ponte Vedra, FL. With SME as sponsor, the 2005 conference marked the first time that the HMC was held in North America. The conference is held every two years and provides an important forum for professionals in the heavy minerals and related industries to meet and discuss issues related to heavy mineral exploration, mining, processing and marketing. Previous locations included Australia and South Africa. The conference consisted of technical presentations, field trips to heavy mineral operations, a trade show and social activities. It was appropriate that Ponte Vedra was selected as the location for the conference. Ponte Vedra, located on the Atlantic Coast 17 km (10 miles) southeast of Jacksonville, FL, is the birthplace of heavy minerals mining in North America. Ponte Vedra beaches were mined from 1916 to 1929 in what was then called Mineral City. Though Ponte Vedra is now a golf and beach resort, there are still four heavy mineral mines operating within an hour’s drive. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site.

A stochastic approach was developed and applied to the Butte, Montana Hillside abandoned mining site for modeling stormwater runoff and subsequent receiving stream loadings. This approach enabled capture and quantification of the uncertainty associated with stormwater quality data and allowed the prediction of copper and zinc concentrations in the receiving stream caused by runoff from the Butte Hillside during storm events. Runoff flows and stormwater concentrations were input to the model as probability distribution functions. Monte Carlo simulation allowed prediction of expected instream concentrations in the form of cumulative distributions functions. The modeling results allowed evaluation of current best management practices (BMPs), targeting of future BMPs, and identification of key data gaps to fill during future sampling activities. This modeling approach is considered extendable to other active and inactive mining sites. Output from a model of this type is easily understood and can be used to communicate effective stormwater management to site regulators. Furthermore, application of this modeling approach will facilitate the development and implementation of a site-specific stormwater management plan and will optimize efforts to achieve standards for compliance with stormwater discharge permits.

MULTIFLUX, a new thermal, hydrologic, and airflow model and software is being developed to solve the flow of heat, moisture, and air in and around an underground opening. MULTIFLUX couples two distinct domains that are solved separately first and re-coupled as an iterative task: (1) the rockmass, and (2) the airway. The airway is solved with a lumped-parameter Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) module which is an embedded part of the MULTIFLUX code. The CFD model includes convection, conduction, and radiation for heat, as well as convection and diffusion for moisture transport in an air-filled opening. The CFD model also solves for the airflow field. The surrounding rockmass model may be from any analytical solution, or from a complex thermal-hydrologic numerical model such as NUFT or TOUGH2. The rockmass model is interfaced to MULTIFLUX using a novel technique called Numerical Transport Code Functionalization (NTCF). The method provides fast convergence on a personal computer platform. The paper reports the results of MULTIFLUX simulations for a mine drift, comparing calculations with a known mine climate software, CLIMSIM, and with measured data. Through this validation example, the performance of MULTIFLUX is demonstrated. The results show excellent agreement due to the use of realistic modeling assumptions and boundary conditions.

The intent of geomorphic landform design is to mimic the function of the natural landscape. In a surface mine reclamation application, geomorphic landform design has the potential to mitigate stream loss. This research quantified features of reference landforms and performed computer modeling of a conceptual valley-fill design using geomorphic landform principles. A design was created using published design parameters with a software design tool (Carlson Natural Regrade with GeoFluv). Three additional designs, incorporating field-obtained regional geomorphic landform parameters, were completed and resulted in a geomorphic landform design specific to southern West Virginia. This work illustrates the importance of field determination of the ridge to head-of-channel input and drainage density parameters. Values of ridge to head-of-channel distance measured in this study were consistently an order of magnitude greater than software recommended values (SRV); SRV = 24 m (80 ft) versus field= 220 m (720 ft). Similarly, for the drainage density parameter, the software recommended range is 6 to 9 km-1 (80-120 ft/ac). The field measurements for central Appalachia quantified the drainage density to range from 5 to 5.3 km-1 (67-70 ft/ac). This affects Appalachian valley-fill stream construction by making the stream lengths shorter and the land slopes steeper with straighter headwater channels compared with areas in the southwestern United States. While the application of geomorphic landform design to surface mine sites presents challenges, this work provides support for future applications.

Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. The United States Antarctic Program (USAP), through its principal support contractor Raytheon Polar Services Co. (RPSC), has recently completed a three-year project comprising nearly 936 m (3,071 ft) of undersnow utility tunnels at Amundsen-Scott Station, South Pole, Antarctica. The tunnel serves the new station facilities that are currently under construction. It houses the piping that conveys fresh water from current and future water well sites, as well as waste water to repositories in abandoned wells. The undersnow tunnels permit year-round access for system operations and maintenance. The network of tunnels is entirely unlined and unsupported. And, for the most part, it maintains a rectangular cross section of 1.8-m-wide x 3-m-high (6 x 10 ft).The tunnel runs from 6 to 14 m (18 to 45 ft) below the surface. Eight 1-m- (3.3-ft-) diam raises bored from the surface serve the network as emergency escapeways.

Your assessment of the minerals business. The global mining industry is strong. I am convinced it will continue meeting the mineral needs of the world population for the foreseeable future. Two developments have greatly enhanced the industry’s ability to produce low-cost minerals. Technological innovations have resulted in increased productivity. And there has also been a dramatic expansion of the number of favorable countries in which to explore and mine. Capital expenditures have flowed to the low-production-cost mines and development projects as well as to the exploration projects and stable countries having the best potential for valuable mineral discoveries.

The search for precious metals opened up the American West. And Nevada was right in the heart of this development. In the mid-19th century, prospectors seeking gold roamed the hills of Nevada and discovered the ComstockLode. The development of this huge silver and gold deposit began in1859 and was responsible for Nevada’s early entry to statehood. Mining was Nevada’s first industry. In more recent years, the Nevada mining industry has led the nation in gold, silver and barite production. Nevada also produces many other minerals. These include aggregates, clays, copper, diatomite, dolomite, gypsum, lime and limestone, lithium and magnesium compounds, perlite, salt and silica. Even today, Nevada’s mining industry continues to be a major economic force in the state. The mining industry has made more than $10 billion in capital investments in Nevada since 1985. And the value of Nevada’s mineral production last year was about $2.7 billion.

"Dare-Zereshk deposit is one of the deposits supplies ore for Taft copper Complex in Iran Yazd province. This deposit is situated underneath a village the same name. Prior to mining activities, the village and its agricultural lands should be dislocated and deserted. This paper discusses about sustainability factors in this area including: Social and environmental effects of mining, dislocation and substitution of communities, created and lost jobs, financial and economic factors, quality of life index, infrastructures and post-mining land use. Studies have been performed by coupling Geographical Information System (GIS) with decision support tools such as Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM), Through these studies revealed that considering the infrastructures developed for mine and plants, earned incomes and changing the community, mining activity in this area not only increases the social and regional sustainability but also improves it to a higher level."

As the techniques and resolution for 3-D spatial analysis have advanced in the last decade, it is now possible to map in detail the microstructure of multiphase materials in three-dimensional digital space. In this regard, three-dimensional x-ray microtomography offers a unique imaging capability. Spatial resolution on the order of ten microns can be achieved with the use of microfocus x-ray generators. Recently, a state-of-the-art cone beam x-ray microtomography system has been installed at the University of Utah for the quantitative analysis of multiphase materials in three dimensions. This facility has been designed to obtain 2048 x 2048 pixel reconstruction over a 10-mm diameter, while also allowing for the imaging of somewhat larger (40-mm) objects. The system is capable of handling high-density materials, even materials having a density as high as 8.0 g/cm3. This unique, one-of-a-kind, instrument will be used to obtain three-dimensional spatial reconstruction for such applications as specific examples 3D liberation analysis, pore structure analysis of particle beds during filtration and air-void system of concrete structures. The utilization of x-ray microtomography not only will allow for quantitative analysis of multiphase systems but also allow for textural characterization and the determination of phase continuity. In this paper, we present information regarding the current use of this new facility and reviewed potential applications for the advanced analytical system.
