This paper addresses the challenges of designing the underpinning of major sub-way station with 4 operating tracks. No. 7 subway extension crosses under the existing 42nd street subway station on the 8th Avenue line. Understanding the history of the original construction, of the current structures and their condition were instrumental in developing a feasible underpinning design that is integrated with the design of the new tunnels. The existing 8th Avenue subway station has a lower abandoned level. Several alignments and corresponding underpinning schemes were studied. The design allows new tunnel construction under the station without interruption of station operations.

Tround International Inc. is developing rock excavation and drilling devices which utilize a simple patented mechanism for firing frangible projectiles. This system launches a salvo of three projectiles with every shot in automatic sequence. Studies conducted by Physics International Inc. have demonstrated that firing projectiles into hard rock such as granite creates fragmentation which is much faster and cheaper than conventional drilling and blasting. The Tround salvo approach enhances this further by a controlled stresswave interaction created by a slight time difference during impact of the individual projectiles. The University of Maryland is conducting additional studies to optimize these parameters.

The US Constitution provides for regulation by the states for protecting the public's safety, health, and welfare. Hence, in the eyes of the law of all states today, this is the sole justification for registration of professional engineers. Wyoming was the first state to register professional engineers in 1907, to correct abuses of incompetent or fraudulent practices in surveying and real estate. Public safety and health are most directly affected by civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Other branches of engineering have a profound effect on the public welfare, including investors, and safety and health of employees. No arguments, pro or con, are valid except in relation to the registration laws of various states. Code of Ethics Few would argue the desirability of requiring conformance with a code of ethics. A major problem lies in enforcing compliance, since protecting the public demands a high standard of competence, yet assessing competence gets confused with restraint of trade. Bidding engineering work on price competition can lead to pressure to cut corners on engineering quality, and was therefore discouraged by codes of ethics. The Supreme Court, in a suit against the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), barred any engineering society from such bidding restriction. It has, however, upheld the right of states to impose codes of acceptable practice as part of registration laws. For example, Texas Canon I reads, "The engineer's paramount professional responsibility should be the safety, health, and welfare of the general public." Anything less makes the code practically meaningless, but there are potential conflicts of interest in many engineering organizations. How can conflicts be handled? Any corporation could improve its public image by adopting a policy that each employed PE should, without fear of recrimination, record in writing over his seal any problem or flaw in any design that comes to his attention. The policy should further require that his superior provide him a written reply pointing out that the "flaw" is accepted as requiring correction or as a calculated risk, or overruled as erroneous or as a difference of opinion. Errors in calculation of judgment are inevitable. Despite this, there are limits to how much time and money should be spent to eliminate them. It is difficult, however, to see any excuse for failure to conscientiously evaluate the opinion of a PE. This may be an impossible ideal, but how else can the profession or the industry have credibility? The National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE) has a code of ethics one presumably subscribes to by signing an application to write a Principles and Practices examination. However, NCEE has none of the power of enforcement that is available through state boards of registration. Registration Qualifications Qualifications are set by the laws of the states. In general, they require passage of an eight-hour examination in fundamentals, preferably at graduation, and, later, one in principles and practices. The examinations are compiled and distributed by NCEE. This system provides for a high degree of uniformity and reciprocity. States set the education and experience levels (typically four years after graduation) required by those desiring to write the principles and practices examination. Examinations The principles and practices examination calls for answering eight of 20 equal weight questions; one on engineering economics, 19 on engineering. Economics may enter into engineering questions, but only provided the question is not answerable by an economist without engineering training. In preparing examinations, NCEE strives to use questions that require some judgment and can be more effectively answered by someone with four years experience beyond college. "The evaluation of data and information provided by the existing traditional indicators in sustainability assessments is most important. Therefore the Institute of Mining Engineering I from the RWTH Aachen University developed indicators and an assessment system for the mineral raw materials industry on operation, company and sector level on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit, BMWA) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR). In the course of the development of indicators for the raw materials industry quality indicators on different levels of the sustainability assessment procedure have been identified and developed. The following paper describes some of the results focussing on the development and integration of quality indicators into sustainability assessment systems."

In report the results of performance of research works on building up of the connected geoecological and geomechanical monitoring system for modelling and study of a state of mining massif in a region with large-scale underground mining works are discussed. The connected geoecological monitoring requires radical change of methodology of carried out works. To carry out modelling and researches it is impossible without construction of the integrated connected information model of region. Basis of construction of information systems and databases for all sections of Earth Sciences is the set of the approaches, among which, for example, methods of remote sounding, GIS- and GPS-technology etc. Computer technologies are basis on the "supercomputer" technology. The results of performance of some researches for regions of excavation of deposits of potash salts in Russia and Belarus are presented.

Agapito Associates (AAI) provides consulting services in geo-engineering, mining engineering and related disciplines. Founded in 1978, the firm operates out of offices in Grand Junction, CO, Golden, CO and Lombard, IL. Members of the staff include mining, civil and geological engineers, physicists, geologists, numerical analysts, computer specialists, instrumentation specialists, plus administration and technical support personnel. AAI has provided consulting and engineering services to mining companies producing base metals, precious metals, coal, potash, trona, limestone, oil shale and salt, and to defense and nuclear-waste disposal industries. AAI also provides services for measuring in situ horizontal stresses using an advanced biaxial overcore stress downhole measurement system developed by Sigra of Australia. Since 1978, AAI has measured in situ stress in copper, oil shale, molybdenum, trona, limestone and coal mines, and in tunnels and concrete structures. Since 1994, the staff has completed 527 overcore stress determinations. AAI has the equipment and personnel for overcoring, sample coring and instrumentation installation in limited access, surface and underground mines. Portable Longyear CP-65 drills, borehole deformation gauges and strain indicators are used for difficult-access overcoring and are permissible for use in gassy mines.

Supply and Demand After a dismal first half, the industry saw a marked improvement in its markets during the final six months of 1983. Domestic consumption was 17.6% higher in the second half of the year, primarily due to a surge in electric power requirements. The sharp increase in demand for electric power during the third and fourth quarters afforded utilities the opportunity to lower stocks that had accumulated to record levels during 1982. Consumer stocks were reduced from 179 Mt (197 million st) at the end of June to 153 Mt (169 million st) by the end of the year. That is the largest inventory drawdown on record during a six-month period without a major coal strike. Despite the huge depletion in inventories, coal production in the second half of 1983 rose 1.3% above output in the second half of 1982. However, because of the disappointing first half, production in 1983 totaled only 712 Mt (785 million st), 6.4% less than the 760 Mt (838 million st) produced in 1982. Demand The extent to which the economic recovery affected coal markets in 1983 varied: • total domestic coal consumption increased 4.2%; • electric utility coal consumption increased 5.3%; • exports declined by about one-fourth; • coal consumption at coke plants declined 9.5%; and • coal consumption in the other industrial sectors increased 2.9%. Domestic coal consumption totaled 667 Mt (737 million st) it 1983, 27 Mt (30 million st) more than 1982. Electric utility consumption increased from 539 M1 (594 million st) in 1982 to 567 M1 (625 million st) in 1983. Coal consumption at coke plants declined from 37 Mt (41 million st) to 34 M1 (37 million st). Residential and commercial use increased 181 kt (200,000 st) - from 7.4 to 7.6 Mt (8.2 to 8.4 million st). Electric Utilities: Electric power generation increased 3.1% in 1983. Demand for electric power increased in all major consumer categories. Residential and commercial use rose 2.7% and 3.3%, respectively. The most striking increase, however, and indicative of the economy's strong upturn, was the increase in industrial electric power use. Industrial power requirements, which declined 9.8% in 1982, rose 4.1% in 1983. As open pit mines continue to grow deeper and productivity continues to increase, the management of respirable dust and noxious gases can become a challenge. The natural wind flow in open pit mines is often recirculatory. This recirculation traps dust and gases in deep open pit mines. This problem is particularly acute in high latitude open pit mines due to a phenomenon known as an atmospheric inversion. In the winter, arctic and subarctic regions experience short days and long nights. This deficit of solar radiation creates a situation in which cold, still air accumulates near the bottom of the pit. In open pit mines, this can result in unhealthy accumulations of gases and other contaminants in the open pit mines. In this study, the natural wind flow patterns in and around open pit mines were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program. Two dimensional models were created for a variety of pit geometries. The effect of depth, slope angle, and wind speed on the recirculation pattern in the pit was examined.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008 ? ?I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated? (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and often spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep the operation running. With examination there are some things that can be done to make the best use of ventilation systems. Should there be surplus air, in which some of these options may result - financial and other benefits can be obtained. Some of the issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and non-metal mines. Also, operations are faced with demands from reserves that are deeper, hotter and further away from fans and shafts, not to mention increased production demands. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal non-metal operations but some may be applicable to coal too. OPTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT Some of the areas to be addressed are shop ventilation methods, auxiliary equipment areas, dedicated intakes and returns, optimizing development, examination of mine airway utilization and alternative ventilation methods. UNDERGROUND SHOPS First, examine what is being done with the underground shop air. If it is being coursed directly to the returns there may be some potential to better utilize this, in most cases, relatively contaminant free air. Research the legal options for ventilating mine shops. MSHA regulations in 30CFR 57.4761 (1) allow the following options: To confine or prevent the spread of toxic gases from a fire originating in an underground shop where maintenance work is routinely done on mobile equipment, one of the following measures shall be taken: use of control doors or bulkheads, routing of the mine shop air directly to an exhaust system, reversal of mechanical ventilation, or use of an automatic fire suppression system in conjunction with an alternate escape route. The alternative used shall at all times provide at least the same degree of safety as control doors or bulkheads. Discussion This regulation gives some operators flexibility in ventilating underground shop facilities. If shop air is to be coursed through the work area, and then directly to the mine return, the question should be asked ? is the quality of air good enough to be reused in the mine, and if so, what are the risks? Can the risks be accommodated and managed to accomplish the change? If so, a considerable increase in mine level airflow could be attained by reusing shop air. Clearly, regulations are a minimum standard, and can be exceeded. Metal non-metal mine regulations are not as specific as coal due to the multitude of different mining methods and conditions utilized. Risks must be thoroughly examined and addressed to assure a safe environment. Issues Determine what contaminants are being produced in the work area ? welding fumes, diesel exhaust, paint fumes, chemicals and solvents, etc. Survey the area and determine exposures. MSHA requires exposure monitoring in 30 CFR 57.5002 (1) of dust, gasses mists and fumes to assure air quality is being met. Perform surveys and examine existing data to quantify personal and area concentrations of contaminants. Often there is adequate circulation such that exposure levels in shop work areas are low. After sending shop air back into the system any contaminants would be further lowered by dilution with other mine intake air downstream. Look at the shop work schedule. If only on day shift, the other two shifts and possibly weekends have no activity or source of contamination to affect the ventilation system. The worst case planning scenario would be a shop fire. Study and simulate how this would affect the mine and shop area. MSHA regulations require an escape route and a fire suppression system be installed and maintained as follows in 30 CFR 57.4671 (1): (d) Automatic fire suppression system and escape route. If used as an alternative, the automatic fire suppression system and alternate escape route shall meet the following requirements: (1) The suppression system shall be? (d)(1)(i) Located in the shop area; (d)(1)(ii) The appropriate size and type for the particular fire hazards involved; and (d)(1)(iii) Inspected at weekly intervals and properly maintained. (2) The escape route shall bypass the shop area so that the route will not be affected by a fire in the shop area. Case Study In an underground room and pillar mine, active mine workings were advancing further away from the mine shaft with deteriorated returns and leakage having a negative effect on ventilation airflows to the face. Mine level airflows were 236 m3/s (500,000 cfm) and shop airflows were 24 m3/s (50,000 cfm) (see Figure 1A). No additional capacity was available at the main surface fan. A solution was to utilize the shop air then send it to the mine areas instead of directly to the return. Considerable information on shop air quality and exposures from many years of operation was examined and no negative data was discovered. A risk analysis determined that moving forward with a shop air reuse program was desirable. A plan was developed, analyzed and decision to proceed approved by mine management. The change was simulated on the computer with the USBM/MTU MFire program before being implemented. This included utilizing fire scenarios to examine potential exposures to inby mining sections and plan escape routes. The Bolivar Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the Piedras Verdes mining district of Chihuahua is one of many base and precious metal deposits in the north-northwest trending Sierra Madre Belt extending across the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Sonora in northwestern Mexico. The information presented here is drawn from two papers on the Bolivar property1,4 plus new information. Historical mining and exploration for polymetallic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au deposits in the Sierra Madre Belt dates to Spanish Colonial days. Access to the Bolivar Property (Figure 1) is by paved road (approximately 305 km southwest from Chihuahua) and approximately 80 km by all-season gravel roads to the villages of Cieneguita (population ~1,000) and Piedras Verdes (population ~500) adjacent to the property. [ ] The Bolivar property comprises an old Cu-Zn producer (the Bolivar Mine), exploration concessions adjacent to the Bolivar Mine, and a new camp at the mine that supports mining, exploration and maintenance. From 1980 to 2000, former operators extracted approximately 300,000 tonnes of ore that was hand sorted to an average grade of 5-6% Cu and 25-30% Zn. From 2005-2010, Dia Bras produced from the mine just over 600,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.7% Cu and 8.6% Zn. Dia Bras transported mineralized rock 275 km by truck and rail to its Malpaso mill, located about 30 km west of Cuauhtémoc in central Chihuahua, from 2005 until October 2011 when the new Piedras Verde mill was commissioned only 5 km from the mine. (Note: the Company cannot use the term ?ore? because it has never completed a feasibility study.)

This paper presents preliminary test results obtained with a 0.38 kg/s (3000 lb-hr) beta prototype MagMill™. In processing Upper Freeport coal the beta prototype recovered 82% of the weight of the feed and 91% of the heat content while reducing the potential emissions of sulfur, kgSO2/GJ(lbSO2/MBtu), by 61%. Pyritic sulfur in the MagMill™ product was reduced by 78% compared to that in the feed. For all runs, the mill product was controlled between 70 to 80% finer than 74 µ particle size. Recoveries of mercury, arsenic, and selenium ranged from 35 to 45% of that in the feed. Power draw was reduced by 26% and mill throughput was increased by 9% compared to the pulverizer operating with no magnetic separator attached.

High-angle in-pit conveying is an idea that is being seriously studied by a number of important mining companies in North America. Its application in coal, iron ore, and copper mining is expected to reduce mine operating costs considerably compared with the conventional discontinuous methods, such as truck haulage, which are fuel, labor, and maintenance intensive. Therefore, a mine introducing high-angle in-pit conveyors will gain a competitive advantage over mines which continue to use conventional haulage. While the capital outlay for in-pit conveyor systems obviously varies depending on pit depth, the angle of incline, and the capacity required, it generally will not exceed that of truck haulage when all Factors are taken into consideration. These factors include the cost of excavation, as measured in relation to the volume of minerals mined, the cost of building truck ramps and roads, and the capital outlay for the trucks and maintenance facilities. In many cases, in Fact, the capital outlay will be less than for truck haulage. This cost advantage will best be realized by new mines, whereas in existing producing mines the switch from truck haulage may involve the abandonment of a substantial capital asset.

Introduction Hydrometallurgical solvent extraction (SX) processes – featuring large quantities of combustible or flammable organic solvents - are common in the mining industry for recovering non-ferrous metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, uranium, tungsten, iodine and lithium. Recent fire loss incidents and the widespread use of sub-grade tank farms and piping trenches, plastic piping, poor drainage, and closely spaced buildings demonstrate opportunities to improve the use of Inherent Safety (IS) in this industry. The mining industry has designed and constructed facilities with an emphasis on personnel safety, production efficiency and cost effectiveness. The use of IS to eliminate or minimize property fire exposures has not seen widespread practice. Lessons learned from the mainstream CPI have not been communicated or applied. As an example, copper SX plants have consistently used design of gravity flow as a cost and production-effective solution for transferring liquids and minerals through the process. In fact, Jergensen1 recommends to “utilize gravity to the fullest extent possible” in design of SX plants. This philosophy has been achieved by laying out SX plants with process equipment at different grade levels so that solutions can flow “downhill”. Because of the use of large quantities of flammable liquids and the potential for these liquids - if released – to flow unimpeded into other areas – gravity SX processes represent severe inherent fire consequences unless costly barriers, drainage and channeling are also provided. It appears that little thought has been given to the fire protection consequences and challenges of this design feature during the evolution of SX plants and most copper SX plants constructed today use some form of a sub-grade processing area (tank farm) and one-way gravity flow. While this layout is used to assure a cost effective operation it has resulted in significant exposures to high value production. The use of sub-grade production units is an inherently unsafe layout where flammable liquids are used and is a layout that would rarely if ever be used today by the mainstream CPI. Gravity-assist layout is only one example where copper SX plants have been designed and constructed without IS in mind. The use of combustible and frangible corrosion-resistant materials – such as glass, wood and plastic - for flammable liquid storage, processing and piping systems has significantly increased the hazards of these facilities. These materials of construction are not rigorous and allow for rapid failure and release of flammable contents during fire exposure. The use of combustible or frangible systems to handle or transport flammable liquids is not a practice seen today in the CPI.

The HB 2500 hydraulic breaker attachment from Atlas Copco Construction Tools features Krupp percussion technology and a service weight of 2,500 kg (5,512 lbs). This makes it ideal for demolition, tunneling, trenching, foundation work, rock mining and secondary breaking. Suitable for carriers in the 29-to 43-t (32-to 47-st) weight class, the HB 2500 accepts maximum hydraulic flow of 219 L/min (58 gpm) at 18 MPa (2,610 psi) of pressure, and delivers an impact rate of up to 550 blows per minute. The HB 2500 features PowerAdapt, a new system that automatically shuts down the breaker in the event that it receives excessive oil pressure from the carrier.

The ability to identify hazards during a workplace examination is a critical skill for mineworkers to have in order to maintain a safe workplace. While research suggests that being able to successfully recognize hazards requires a complex set of competencies, it is unclear which competencies are most critical to adequately perform a workplace examination. This paper presents a hazard recognition competencies framework as an explanation of the competencies that affect mineworker hazard recognition. To better understand how the industry is selecting and preparing workplace examiners, researchers fromthe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) interviewed nine health and safety (H&S) professionals at surface stone, sand, and gravel mine sites throughout the USA. A primary purpose of these interviews was to verify the competencies included in the hazard recognition competencies framework and to understand why these competencies are critical. Finally, the results of this study are presented within the context of current NIOSH research findings related to hazard recognition.

A new high intensity grinding technology has been developed and is now being commercialized by Hicom International of Australia. This has led to the development and manufacture of Hicom 120 grinding mills which are now being sold internationally for a range of mining industry applications. The first commercial process application has been for the diamond sector, where the ability of the mill to remove host kimberlite rock by attritioning, with no damage to the thereby liberated diamonds, is seen to be a most beneficial attribute. There are, however, many other mineral industry applications for this mill. The design of the Hicom mill is unique. Based on a high speed centrifugal motion of the grinding chamber, very high power intensity is delivered to the grinding process. Most significantly, a high acceleration field, 50 times stronger than gravity is produced, creating very high power input per unit of mill volume, and exceptionally fast particle breakage rates, typically 50 - 100 times greater than those in conventional tumbling mills. A mill developing such forces has significant implications to comminution technology and practice.

Rib brows present a significant safety hazard in underground coal mines in the United States. To address this issue, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) are developing a practical tool to assess both the potential of rib brow formation and the stability of any formed brows. As part of this effort, a monitoring study was conducted to assess the potential for rib brow formation in coal pillar ribs. This study was conducted in a room-and-pillar coal mine where coal pillar ribs are prone to developing rib brows. Although no rib brows formed in the instrumented pillar, data from monitoring and visual observations provided valuable insights into the loading mechanisms impacting the instrumented pillar. These findings helped identify factors that may reduce rib brow formation, including the cavability of the roof in mined areas, the applied rib support, the strength of rock partings, and the overall integrity of the coal seam. The scientific findings published in the case study aid in assessing the potential of brow formation, offering additional evidence for the need to improve rib control methods in underground coal mines.

Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the US mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the available research literature is timely. This paper describes a rapid review that identifies, characterizes, and classifies the research literature to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a Technology Readiness Assessment. Systematic search methods were applied to three electronic databases, and relevant articles were identified through the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sixty-four articles from 2000 to 2020 met these criteria and were categorized into seven CXS technology categories. Review and assessment of the articles indicates that much of the literature-based evidence for CXS technology lies within lower levels of maturity (i.e., components and prototypes tested under laboratory conditions and in relevant environments). However, less evidence exists for CXS technology at higher levels of maturity (i.e., complete systems evaluated within operational environments) despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for systematic peer-reviewed research to evaluate the performance of CXS technologies and demonstrate the efficacy of prototypes or commercial products, which could be fostered by more collaboration between academia, research institutions, manufacturers, and mining companies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions. However, this contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate that most haul truck fatal accidents are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions (e.g., traveling through a berm). Lastly, the relatively small amount of literature and segmented nature of the included studies suggests that there is a need for incremental progress or more stepwise research that would facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies over time. This progression over time could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.

The bioleaching of sulfide minerals involves a ferric attack of the mineral with the role of the micro-organisms being the oxidation of the ferrous-iron back to the ferric form, and the oxidation of sulfur, either via thiosulfate or polysulfides, to sulfate. The kinetics of bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation and the chemical ferric leach kinetics of sulfide minerals can both be described as functions of the ferric/ferrous-iron ratio. The independently determined bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation and chemical ferric-iron leaching kinetics have been successfully used to predict continuous bioleaching operations.

INTRODUCTION Gas hydrates have considerable potential to be a major energy resource owing to their apparent abundance in Arctic regions and along continental margins throughout the world (Kvenvolden, 1988). Yet, the oil and gas industry has been slow to pursue this opportunity. The primary reasons for this are the large conventional reserve base for natural gas worldwide and the perception that gas hydrate will not be a viable resource for another twenty or thirty years. Gas hydrates are thus viewed as a potential resource for the distant future, but not a valid investment for the near term. This paper addresses both global gas markets and gas hydrate technology, and shows that the commercial development of gas hydrate could proceed rapidly enough to constitute a near-term energy resource. GLOBAL GAS MARKETS The proven worldwide reserves of conventional natural gas are truly enormous, totaling over 6,000 TCF according to BP (2004). Moreover, those reserves have nearly doubled during the past two decades and now represent 67 years of consumption at the current production rates of 80 TCF per year (Fig. 1). This reserve increase has occurred even as global production of natural gas has increased by 67% during the same two decades (Fig. 2). While declining conventional gas reserves are a concern in North America, especially in regions where established infrastructure exists to bring gas to consumers, large new discoveries continue to be made elsewhere in the world. Indeed, in many parts of the world (such as the Middle East and parts of West Africa), natural gas has been regarded as an essentially worthless byproduct of oil production or exists in stranded gas fields. Given this situation, pursuing unconventional gas resources that are inherently riskier exploration targets and more expensive to produce would appear to have little rationale from a business standpoint.
