The 5-mile long Bay Tunnel is a major water supply facility to be constructed under the San Francisco Bay and adjacent marshlands between the San Andreas Fault to the west and the Hayward Fault to the east. The tunnel will have a two-pass lining system consisting of a watertight precast concrete segmental initial lining and a welded steel pipe final lining. Considering the Bay Tunnel?s location between two major active faults, the design earthquake produces a significant peak ground acceleration estimated at approximately 0.6g. To develop a design that can achieve the seismic performance objectives, full dynamic seismic analyses were performed using site-specific earthquake time histories. The analyses considered soil-structure interaction and an evaluation of the transverse and longitudinal effects of the design earthquake. This paper describes the seismic analyses and the design measures recommended to minimize potential adverse effects of the design earthquake on the tunnel final lining.

The Georgia kaolin district is the world’s largest producer of kaolin. Georgia production tripled from 2.87 Mt (3.17 million st) in 1968 to8.35 Mt (9.2 million st) in 1998. Development of the Georgia kaolin industry can be traced to the identification of the mineral resource, the adoption of innovative process technologies and the creation of markets for kaolin. Georgia kaolin is an abundant and high-quality resource that shows a range of advantageous properties. Technical developments in wet processing, delamination and calcination allowed production of high-value products. The use of kaolin pigments in the paper industry provided a market that absorbed the rapid growth in kaolin production.

Hematite floatability from two low grade banded iron ores of India, namely banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) and banded hematite jasper (BHJ) using fatty acids and amine as the collectors is investigated under identical physico-chemical conditions. The results indicated that hematite present in BHQ ore is easy to float using both the collectors, compared to BHJ ore. The difference of flotability between the two banded iron ores is that quartz grains are coarser and well liberated below 100 micron size in case of BHQ compared to BHJ ore. In case of BHJ ore, fine hematite and quartz grains are intimately inter-grown and are dispersed in thick jasper bands leading to liberation problems. Besides that, dusty jasper particles coat over hematite surface in case of BHJ ore during the process of grinding, which hinders specific adsorption of collector on hematite or quartz surfaces. This is substantiated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The flotation studies have indicated that it is possible to achieve ~64% Fe with ~67% recovery from a BHQ ore using both anionic and cationic collectors from a feed containing around 38% Fe. In contrast, the hematite recovery in BHJ ore was poor. Differences in the ore characteristics that affect the flotability of hematite present in both the ores are compared. The kinetics on the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied by use of series piezoelectric quartz crystal ( SPQC ). Arsenic ioninhibits the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, which is consistent with the previous results by other measuring method. This further demonstrates that the SPQC can monitor the chemical activity of the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Cupric ion accelerates the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The mechanism was discussed, it was considered that copper promotes the protein enzyme of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, rustic yanin, to form over the range of cupric ion concentration studied. There action order of cupric ion in accelerating the bacterial growth is 0.067. The growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is dependent on temperature, the apparent reaction activation energy decreases from25.56 kJ / mol to 18.32 kJ / mol because of the addition of 10 mg / L Cu(II) to the bacterial growth solution of pH 2.0 at initial inoculum of 10%.

Underground mining method selection (UMMS) is one of the most important issues in mining engineering. Underground mining method should be primarily selected to make use of underground resources optimally. It is nearly impossible to change the mining method once selected by the reasons of rising costs and mining losses. Because of these reasons, UMMS process is extremely important in mine designs and economics. The strategy of underground mining method selection has been studied by different researchers in the literature. Boshkov and Wright (1973) proposed a classification system; Morrison (1976) suggested a selection chart; Laubscher (1981) proposed a selection methodology; Nicholas (1981) presented a classification system; Hartman (1987) developed a selection chart and Miller-Tait et al. (1995) modified the Nicholas? system and developed the UBC mining method selection process. In reality, UMMS is one of the important Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problems and mining engineers have always some difficulties in making the right decision in the multiple criteria environment. To make a right decision on UMMS, all known criteria related to the mining method selection should be analyzed and the problem solved according to suitable decision making techniques. A review of the literature reveals that decision making techniques have been used for UMMS applications. Kesimal and Bascetin (2002), Bitarafan and Ataei (2004), Bascetin et al. (2006), Alpay and Yavuz (2007), Karadogan et al. (2008) and Samimi Namin et al. (2008) used decision making techniques in UMMS applications. In this paper, two different MADM methods: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision Making (FMADM) are applied to select the optimal underground mining method for a chromite mine and final solutions are then compared. THE AHP METHODOLOGY The AHP method developed by Saaty gives an opportunity to represent the interaction of multiple factors in complex unstructured situations (Triantaphyllou, 2000). The method is based on the pair-wise comparison of components with respect to attributes and alternatives. A pair-wise comparison matrix n×n is constructed, where n is the number of elements to be compared. The method is applied for the hierarchy problem structuring. The problem is divided in to three levels: problem statement, object identification to solve the problem and selection of evaluation criteria for each object. After the hierarchy structuring, the pair-wise comparison matrix is constructed for each level where a nominal discrete scale from 1 to 9 is used for the evaluation as shown in Table 1 (Saaty, 1980; Saaty, 2000). The next step is to find the relative priorities of criteria or alternatives implied by this comparison. The relative priorities are worked out using the theory of eigenvector. For example, if the pair comparison matrix is A, then, [Amax=××- [1] ] To calculate the eigenvalue ??max? and eigenvector w=(w1, w2,..., wn), weights can be estimated as relative priorities of criteria or alternatives. [ ] Since the comparison is based on the subjective evaluation, a consistency ratio is required to ensure the selection accuracy. The Consistency Index (CI) of the comparison matrix is computed as follows: [CImax--= [2] ] where ?max is maximal or principal eigenvalue, and n is the matrix size. ABSTRACT Health and safety indicators help mine sites predict the likelihood of an event, advance initiatives to control risks, and track progress. Although useful to encourage organizations to work together, executing such risk assessments comes with challenges. This paper focuses on one trona mine’s experience in the development and implementation of a field level risk assessment program to help its entire organization understand and manage risk to an acceptable level. Through a transformational process of ongoing support and communication, Solvay Green River fostered a culture of trust and safety grounded in risk assessment, safety interactions, and hazard correction. The application of consistent risk assessment (RA) tools was critical to create a participatory workforce that not only talks about safety, but actively identifies energies that contribute to hazards and potential incidents. In this paper, reflecting on the mine’s process of RA implementation provides examples of likely barriers that sites may encounter when trying to document and manage risks. As discussed, consistent efforts to establish a participatory risk management program are worth the initial struggle to ultimately reduce incidents. INTRODUCTION Work-related health and safety (H&S) incidents often account for lost days on the job, contributing to organizational/financial and personal/social burdens [1-2]. Accompanying research demonstrates that risk and ambiguity around risk contribute to almost every decision that individuals make throughout the day [3-4]. In response, understanding individual attitudes toward risk has been unquestionably linked to predicting H&S behavior [5]. Although an obvious need exists to identify more comprehensive methods to assess and mitigate potential hazards, some argue that risk management is not given adequate attention in occupational H&S [6]. Additionally, research suggests that a current lack of knowledge, skills, and motivation are primary barriers to mitigating workplace risks [3-6]. Therefore, enhancing knowledge and awareness around risk-based decisions, including individuals’ abilities to understand, measure, and assign levels of risk to determine an appropriate response, is increasingly important in hazardous environments to predict and prevent incidents. This paper focuses on tailored approaches to field level risk assessment (FLRA), measurement, and common barriers to participating in such activities. The authors use a trona mine in Green River, Wyoming, as a case study to illustrate how the organization overcame widespread and site-specific challenges to implement a proactive risk management program. By discussing the mine’s tailored FLRA program, this case study contributes to the literature by first, providing examples of critical components that need to be in place to ensure successful risk management and second, context for continuous quality improvement that can foster a higher level of trust and empowerment on site."

The purpose of this project is to convey sanitary sewage from an existing pump station to a new waste water treatment plant. This paper will discuss the design and construction aspects of the project. The scope includes construction of three main shafts ranging from 34 to 100 feet in diameter at depths of 200 to 230 feet and 21,000feet of tunnel. Shaft construction consisted of slurry wall excavations keyed into claystone and limestone at depths ranging from 114 to 130 feet, followed by rock excavation utilizing drill and blast methods. The tunnel is being excavated in the Warsaw and Salem shale and limestone formations utilizing a 12'-6" diameter Wirth hard rock TBM.

Detailed porewater profiles of arsenic and other interstitial metabolites were used to assess the relationship between trophic status, sediment redox chemistry and arsenic mobility in a historic tailings repository. The results demonstrate that in eutrophied systems which exhibit greater sediment oxygen demand, the depth of the Fe(III) redoxcline, and hence depth of arsenic release, may lie in close proximity to the sediment-water interface. As a result, arsenic scavenging mechanisms are significantly reduced, resulting in a greater flux of arsenic to the water column. Such considerations have important implications for the management of pit lakes, tailings ponds and contaminated lakes which may consider: 1) the discharge of sewage to the water body during operations; and/or 2) post-closure fertilization as a remediation strategy.

Four companies mined ball clay in four States during2004. They were H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals) Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys),Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.46 Mt (1.61 million st) valued at about $56.9 million, based on a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. In 2003, production was 1.31 Mt (1.44 million st) valued at $56.2 million. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of production. It was followed by Texas, Kentucky and Mississippi.

To investigate the differences in the radial drag pick cutting performance in dry and saturated sandstone, a suite of linear rock cutting test was performed using linear rock cutting machine (LRCM). Experimental results of 50 data passes, incorporating 350 data cuts were used to compute cutting, normal and side forces required for determination of other performance related parameters. Although the forces required to cut the dry and saturated rock were in congruence for most of the spacing and depths of cut combinations; but the overall averaged cutting and normal forces for saturated rock cutting were found to be 9.9% and 9.4% respectively higher than the dry rock cutting. The increase in the overall averaged forces was attributed to strength variability of one of the saturated block affecting the overall forces. The side forces experienced a negligible drop in saturated rock cutting. An increase of 28% and 9% in the actual and nominal specific energy values respectively was also recorded when cutting saturated rock as compared to the dry rock cutting. The increase in saturated rock specific energy is attributed to production of large amount of fines and few large sized chips directly contributing towards increase in specific energy. The optimum s/d ratio for dry rock tests was found to lie between 6 and 8 whereas for saturated rock cuts this value lied between 5 and 9.

Comingling filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailingsdominated mixture is a mine waste management strategy that has the potential to create geotechnically and geochemically stable landforms. Potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock can be sequestered within a filtered tailings matrix to enhance water retention and decrease hydraulic conductivity relative to a waste rock pile, potentially minimizing acid rock drainage (ARD). Enhanced water retention can reduce oxygen ingress limiting oxidation and resultant acid generation. Reduced hydraulic conductivity can slow inward percolation and outward drainage. In dry climates, the tailings matrix can hold precipitation near the ground surface accessible to evaporation and transpiration, thereby decreasing percolation. This paper presents an evaluation of comingled filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailings-dominated mixture (termed GeoWaste herein) and illustrates that ARD can be reduced under field conditions in a subtropical–highland climate.

Despite the fact that the New Austrian Tunneling Method; NATM, has been used in the United States for the past 23 years or so, still considerable misconceptions exist in the industry about the nature of the method and its implementation. In the authors’ view its implications are usually not well understood. The paper provides an overview of the highlights of NATM usage over the past two decades to illustrate the point that NATM is now a well-established tunneling method in the U.S.A. Accordingly the thrust of this paper is on the more pragmatic aspects of the NATM technology usage as it concerns the Owners, Designers and the Contractors. Prior to examining the implications of NATM usage from the viewpoints of various stakeholders, it should be helpful to first briefly provide an overview of the history of the method as it was introduced and implemented on several key tunneling projects in the US, over the last 2 plus decades.

Globalization was the key word for the mining industry during the 1990s, just as productivity was the key word of the 1980s. And globalization will remain the key word as the industry enters the 21st century, according to speakers at the Colorado MPD Meeting held in Colorado Springs, CO in May. The meeting, put on by the Colorado Section SME Minerals Processing Division, drew about 120 people to the Broadmoor Hotel. “Operating Globally” was the theme of the 49th annual conference. Speakers addressed the reasons why mining companies have limited their spending in the United States and have moved into Third World and developing nations.

Geogrids can be used as surface control on both the roof and rib in underground mines to prevent the fall of small pieces of rock and material from between the primary supports. The use of screen material such as geogrid can significantly reduce the number of ground fall injuries caused by these small rock falls. Because of the potential for reducing injuries through the use of screen, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests on screen materials including geogrid to determine their support characteristics and identify parameters that can affect their performance with respect to maintaining broken or failed rock. A specially designed test frame installed in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) has been used to evaluate the load and stiffness characteristics of the screen material. Two types of geogrids with various designs have been tested-a polyester yarn and a polypropylene grid. The load-displacement characteristics of these grids were determined and the load capacity and stiffness were calculated through 20in of displacement. The load capacity and stiffness of the geogrid in general are shown to be related to the ultimate tensile strength of the screen material.

For research and test data to serve a useful purpose, it is essential that it be derived from some known standard test procedure that allows for comparative analysis as well as independent replication and verification. Fan performance data provided by manufacturers is not absolute, and is influenced by the geometry of the test installation. For these reasons, fan test standards have been prepared in order to establish a clearly defined test procedure that allows for comparison of different fan designs, and also allows for the independent verification of test data. Internationally recognized Standards such as BS848, ISO5801, and AMCA 210 etc. are highly prescriptive, and precisely specify test duct configurations, measurement procedures, measurement planes and instrumentation to be used. Provided the laboratory tests are conducted strictly in accordance with the relevant Standard, the performance data will accurately reflect fan performance within the appropriate tolerances for efficiency, pressure and flow when tested in the defined configuration. Major differences in performance exist between a fan tested in accordance with a Fan Test Standard, and an identical fan installed in a mine ventilation system. The aerodynamic performance of any fan will be influenced by the quality of the fan manufacture, the flow system within which it is operating, the location of measurement planes, and the system stability. The flow distributions present in a standardized Laboratory test are unlikely to be repeated in mine ventilation systems, and this will also disadvantage fan performance. Unless the fan supplier takes all of these influences into account, there will an inevitable reduction in fan aerodynamic performance, and the end user will experience a shortfall in expected flow through the mine. The effect on fan performance can range from minor inconvenience to catastrophic fan failure resulting in major rectification costs and significant loss of mine production.

The CTC (Certified Trading Chains) mineral certification system has been piloted in Rwanda since late 2008. CTC project implementation is jointly driven by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and the Rwanda Geology and Mines Authority (OGMR), in cooperation with other national stakeholders. Five Rwandan mineral producers participate in the CTC project with their flagship mining concessions. Based on independent third-party audits, CTC certifies supply chain due diligence measures of these companies engaged in the artisanal mining sector through on-the-ground assessments of mining conditions, transparency, as well as mineral origin and traceability. The CTC system thus allows responsible mineral producers and their clients to verifiably demonstrate supply chain due diligence and good governance in conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

Proper illumination is critical to a miner?s ability to detect hazards in underground mines. Moving hazards are often located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view, while slip/trip/fall hazards are often located in the forward field-of-view. The objective of the research described in this paper was to determine if light-emitting diodes (LEDs) improve visual performance as compared to traditional incandescent (INC) cap lamps. The research presented focuses on comparative studies of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) prototype LED, a commercial LED, and an INC camp lamp. Thirty subjects participated in these studies; ten subjects in each of the age groups: 18 to 25 years, 40 to 50 years, and 51+ years. Visual performance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy in detecting hazards, while visual performance for disability glare was quantified by the use of contrast sensitivity tests. Results suggest that LEDs with a visible spectrum containing a higher concentration of the shorter wavelengths can enable visual performance improvements with respect to disability glare, the detection of moving hazards in the peripheral field-of-view, and the detection of floor hazards in the forward field-of-view. The NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp provided the best visual performance improvements for the older age groups in every test. Starting in 1980, a committee of the National Research Council studied the question of why some underground coal mines are safer than others and what could be done to improve the ones with poorer performance. The results indicated that safety is improved by management commitment to safety, by cooperation between labor and management on safety matters, and by quality training of employees and managers. Younger miners have higher accident frequencies, but are less likely to be killed or permanently disabled by a lost-time accident. Methods for improving safety performance are proposed.
