Copper cyanide is a common component of cyanide-treatable precious metal ores. The copper concentration in production heaps can be predicted from laboratory column tests, but the exact correlation is not necessarily intuitive. Generally, heap leach operators like to keep copper concentrations in solution below 300?500 ppm and may note problems with gold recovery and cyanide consumption when copper concentrations exceed this amount. There are several methods of copper removal from cyanide solutions including ion exchange; direct electrowinning; acidification, volatilization, and recovery (AVR); and sulphide precipitation such as the sulphidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening (SART) process. SART involves acidification with addition of soluble sulphide, separation of the resulting copper sulphide precipitate, and addition of lime to re-establish alkalinity prior to returning the solution to the leaching process, recovering both copper and cyanide as valuable products. In principle SART is very simple. Yet some SART plants that have been built may have been unnecessarily complex. This paper explores the basics of SART and makes the case for a simple plant design as applied to the heap leaching circuit.

Computational modelling methods and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) were employed to investigate the interaction of a pyrite surface with thiol collectors. Modelling work was conducted in the presence and absence of water. Microcalorimetry was employed to investigate the resultant energy of interaction pyrite as a result of mineral-collector interactions. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX), diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) and diethyl dithiophosphate (DTP) were investigated in this study. The results showed that the calculated surface energies and morphologies for FeS2 showed that (100) and (111) are the most stable surfaces. The morphology also indicated the appearance of the (100) and (111) surface facets and no presence of others. The calculated adsorption energies between thiol collectors and the pyrite surface were always more exothermic than the experimentally determined ones. When comparing different ligand types with the same alkyl chain length, the heat of adsorption of diethyl-DTC was greater than that of ethyl xanthate and diethyl-DTP for pyrite. Experimentally, the diethyl DTP barely adsorbed onto the pyrite surface and this may be due to a different mechanism of action. In computational calculations, water adsorption was found to reduce the reactivity of the Fe atom for the interaction with thiol collectors, and bring the adsorption energies closer to the magnitude of the experimental values. Transition metals have been widely used in medicine throughout history. The medicinal use of metals extends back to the earliest recorded history when the Chinese used gold as treatment for a variety of ailments. The ancient Egyptians used copper to sterilize water and mercury was reportedly used by Hippocrates in 400BC. Thereafter, numerous other metals have been used as treatment throughout the centuries. For example, zinc sulphate was used as an emetic in the 17th century and zinc oxide was used to treat epilepsy in the 18th century. This use of metals, and numerous other instances, which have been well described in Sneader 2008,1 make for interesting reading but largely occurred prior to the advent of rigorous scientific method. Therefore, although there are exemptions, most therapeutic applications of metals prior to the modern age lack scientific grounding and have been found to be mostly ineffective. Of more relevance are metal-based medicines approved by regulatory bodies (i.e. Food and Drug Administration; FDA) that are in current use as therapeutic drugs. There are presently a large number of metal-based drugs that are approved for use by the FDA ranging from over the counter medicines, such as bismuth subsalicylate for gastrointestinal problems, to prescription drugs such as lithium carbonate for the treatment of manic depression. The list of metal-based medicines approved by the FDA not only incorporates base metals but also includes precious metals. Platinum complexes have been found to be potently active against several different types of cancers while gold complexes have shown application as treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). With the well-established foundation that exists for metal-based medicines, it is imperative to continue exploration into new therapeutic areas. The precious metals; gold, ruthenium and platinum, continue to attract scientific interest in the field of biomedicine and have been widely researched. Scientific studies conducted on gold complexes have demonstrated the potential of this metal for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, cancer and malaria. These diseases are also specific health concerns for developing nations; countries where disease has devastating impact. Within South Africa alone, an estimated 5.7 million people are infected with HIV/AIDS,2 approximately 7 000 new cases of malaria are reported annually, and it is projected that 1 in 4 persons will develop cancer. Continuous development of therapeutic drugs to combat these diseases is therefore apriority, and the exploration of gold-based compounds for this purpose is warranted.

A new Scramble has hit the African continent. This Scramble has many drivers: the 1978 Deng Xiao Ping liberalizations in China; the 1989 collapse of the Soviet empire; the ICT revolution; the ease of global communications. The underlying dynamic is the end of the bipolar world of the Cold War and its replacement with multipolarity. According to HSBC (2011), in 2050 China will be the world?s largest economy, with India number 3 and Brazil number 7. Russia will be 15th (below its old rival, Turkey). South Africa maybe ranked 30th, yet has been invited to join the exclusive (BRIC) club. One has to ask, why? It is sad to note how low South Africa is assessed to be?currently it is around number 24 in the world; the reason for the fall is that the HSBC model includes population growth, and it is in this domain that South Africa is a loser, being constrained by the impact of HIV/AIDS on its life expectancy. The original four BRIC nations include the factory of the world (China), the garden of the world (Brazil), the gas station of the world (Russia), and the back office of the world (India). South Africa comes to the club both as jeweller of the world and as gatekeeper. China, Brazil, and Russia all have considerable expertise in mining exploration, extraction, and processing.

Right now the South African mining industry is a high-profile, vital contributor to the nation just as it has been for the past one hundred and twenty-six years since the discovery of diamonds-perhaps even further back if the mining of copper, iron ore, tin, and other minerals in earlier centuries is included. The media in 1995, as has been the case over the years, bear testimony to the complex interactions between the industry and its stakeholders: shareholders, government, employees and their unions, training and educational institutions, researchers, markets, the public, and suppliers of goods, services, and infrastructure. The pressures and challenges that the industry continues to face can be summarized as safety and health, competitiveness, and social and environmental responsibility. There are no surprises here. The motivation for the industry to perform well in these areas is clear; the focus I intend to bring is on the most important tool required for success-that of good mining engineering. This Address sets out - to review the mining aspects that have been discussed in South Africa during the first five years of the decade, a discussion that shows the return of the country as an important mining forum, confirms the role of professional institutes and associations in the development of mining engineering, and brings current relevant issues into focus - to highlight the vital role of mining engineering in the industry, and to identify priorities for the remainder of the decade - to provide the prospective mining engineer, the mining-engineering student and trainee, and the practising mining engineer and mine manager with a better appreciation of the mining-engineering discipline. institutes and ssociations

The main sulphide zone (MSZ) of the Great Dyke is cryptic and without obvious stratigraphic markers. Although there are trends in the dimensions of the PGE and base metal profiles across the Hartley Complex, the profiles are invariant within a particular mining area. Ratios derived from these profiles are used to interpret diamond drill cores drilled ahead of underground development. Detailed logging of oriented core shows the exact position and attitude of intersected faults. Metal ratios are used to estimate fault throw to within 25 cm. It is possible to draw detailed sections showing the extent of ground disturbance well ahead of mining. Mine water poses a significant problem in lignite coal mining. The drainage of mine water is the fundamental prerequisite of mining operations. Under the legislation of the Czech Republic, mine water that discharges into surface watercourse is subject to the permission of the state administration body in the water management sector. The permission also stipulates the limits for mine water pollution. Therefore, mine water has to be purified prior to discharge. Although all mining companies operate mine water treatment plants, there is hardly any utilization of the final effluent. The high expenditure involved in the more sophisticated methods of mine water treatment has fuelled the search for the commercial utilization of the effluent.

Heavy mineral deposits often contain relatively high levels of radioactive elements (thorium and uranium in particular).It is difficult to obtain clean separation of ilmenite and monazite (the main impurity mineral containing radioactive elements), and physical intergrowths of the two minerals are, in fact, not uncommon. As a result, ilmenite concentrates obtained from such deposits often contain high levels of thorium and uranium. Because of the large negative free energies of formation of ThO2and U3O8boththorium and uranium report to the slag during smelting and if an ilmenite concentrate contaminated with monazite is used to make high titania slag, the concentrations of these elements in the slag end up about 40% higher than in the ilmenite feed. Previous work, patented by RGC Mineral Sands Limited, and subsequently confirmed by Mintek, showed that radioactivity may be reduced by roasting an ilmenite concentrate with borax at 1000°C to 1100°C and leaching it with hydrochloric acid1. It is evident that the cost of an ilmenite roast/leach process will be high and there may be economic benefits in removing the radioactive elements from the slag instead (the volume of slag to be treated is smaller than the volume of ilmenite feed). To remove radioactive elements from the slag it is necessary to know how these elements occur in the slag. Inother words, the distribution of uranium and thorium between the various oxide, silicate and metallic phases in high titania slag must be determined. Once the deportment of thorium and uranium between the various phases ha sbeen determined, an appropriate process for slag purification can be developed. Test samples High-titania slag was prepared in a pilot-scale DC furnace from ilmenite concentrates with different levels of uranium and thorium. Subsequently, ten slag samples representing a range of compositions were selected for bulk chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro-analysis. The samples were crushed to a maximum particle size of 1 mm and from each sample a 20-kg batch was riffled out for analysis. Bulk chemical composition Chemical compositions of the samples selected for test work are given in Table I. TiO2, Al2O3, SiO2, MgO, MnO, FeO and V2O5were analysed by ICP-OES, Na2O, CaO andCr2O3by atomic absorption spectroscopy and U and Th by XRF (the XRF detection limit for U and Th was around 4 ppm). The ?B? series has a higher silica content than the others as a result of small silica additions that were made during smelting. All samples have elevated alumina levels as a result of furnace refractory contamination during smelting. As expected, there is an inverse relationship between the concentrations of TiO2and FeO in the samples (Figure 1).The TiO2and FeO levels are similar to the levels found in industrial slags2. Extreme conditions of reduction under which reduction of more ?refractory? oxides (e.g., chromia, magnesia, silica, alumina and even urania and thoria) might take place were not explored in the study. Note that BB1and BBB1 contain more than 7% combined silica and alumina (SiO2as a flux addition during smelting, and Al2O3from refractory contamination) and they do not fall on the general trend defined by the other samples. The U and Th concentrations of sample E2 is noteworthy. In the preparation of slag E2, monazite concentrate was added to the ilmenite to increase the concentrations of radioactive elements in the slag. This was done primarily to facilitate the detection of Th and U during the phase chemical characterization of the slag. In many practical situations, calculation of the point semivariogram is not necessary. Such a case is analysed in this chapter. The purpose of this analysis is to give a better understanding of the meaning of the mathematical formulae developed in the previous chapters. The assessment of backfill as a support medium in gold mines has been based generally on its ability to reduce the amount of potential energy available to cause damaging rockbursts. While this regional support effect is very important, the methods of analysis commonly used to quantify it predict that, owing to the very compressible nature of the fill, the support provided in areas of small convergence will be negligible. This prediction, however, is contrary to the conditions observed in practice, namely that weak fill does provide a discernible beneficial effect. In addition to the regional support effect, several mechanisms of secondary support, particularly those applicable to areas of low convergence, are identified and discussed. These include the mechanism of deformation of the detached hangingwall beam, rotational and shear effects on bedding, joints and fractures, joint infill, the continuous support effect of the backfill under static and dynamic conditions, the preservation of the integrity of the hangingwall beam, and the potential modification of local stress fields. Confidence in the validity of some of these mechanisms is afforded by the results of theoretical investigations into the behaviour of backfill- supported stopes. The results dealt with are: ? the behaviour of the hangingwall as a beam on an elastic foundation; ? the behaviour of stope/backfill, modelling the surrounding rock as a jointed rock mass.

This paper presents the results of a study of the mechanics of methane gas flow in coal. Desorption tests carried out on cylindrical coal specimens showed that an analytical formulation can be made to model the process of gas flow in coal based on an integration of Darcy's law, Fick's law and Langmuir's relation. The diffusivity term in the flow equation varies directly with local gas content. Permeability tests carried out on the same coal result in permeability constants with values higher than equivalent permeabilities obtained from desorption tests by many orders of magnitude. The study also revealed that permeability is highly dependent on the applied gas pressure and the rock stress.

It should be possible to use an oxygen probe to follow iron removal during converting, if local equilibrium is established between iron in the matte and the iron oxides in the fayalitic slag. The oxygen activity is expected to increase strongly as the iron content of the matte decreases (and the iron activity in the matte drops) while the iron oxide activity in the slag remains constant. To test this idea, oxygen activities were measured in synthetic mattes (made up of mixture of Cu2S, FeS and Ni3S2) when in contact with silica saturated SiO2-FeO slags, and silica and (initially) magnetite saturated SiO2-FeO-Fe3O4slags. The measurements were performed on laboratory scale at 1250°C, using an oxygen probe consisting of a stabilized zirconia electrolyte and Fe/FeO reference, and containing the sample in a silica crucible. Electrical contact to the matte was by means of a platinum wire. The measured oxygen activity was sensitive to the iron content of the matte, and insensitive to the composition of the gas atmosphere over the melt. The measured oxygen activity was generally close to that predicted by Fact Sage calculations. This indicates that such oxygen activity measurements could be useful to monitor iron removal during converting of nickel-copper-iron mattes.

The South African democratically-elected government instituted policies and legislation that are intended to bring about change and transformation in the country and have drastically affected different industries, among others, the mining industry. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter (Mining Charter) were introduced in order to redress previous inequalities and to promote women's employment in the mining industry. This research evaluates the practical implementation of the MPRDA and the Mining Charter with specific reference to women in underground mining. A quantitative research paradigm was used. Data were collected through a process of a face-to-face interview surveys utilizing a structured questionnaire. The research setting was limited to the platinum-mining industry in the area of Rustenburg in the North West Province. The study population consisted of 195 available women working undergound at the mine. It is clear from the findings that mining companies are facing major challenges in their attempt to incorporate women in underground mining activities. Company policies regarding these issues must be firmly in place; however, the challenge lies in the translation of these policies into practice. In this regard, managers will have to play a leading role in the successful phasing in of women into the underground mining arena.

Mine planning is a complex function and also a vital one. The quality of the planning has a profound effect on the efficiency and the economics of every mining operation. It is therefore important that the function should not be reliant upon only a few techniques but should have command of an orchestra of them. Then the most appropriate can be selected for each application or, if it is advantageous, a group can be employed in concert. This paper introduces peripheral algebra as a set of techniques which should be included in the mine planning orchestra. Its objective is primarily to stimulate more development not only of these techniques but also others of a similar kind which will increase the effectiveness of mine planning.

This paper examine the optimization of a beneficiation plant for recovering marketable barites from crude ores of different characteristics. The plant, part of a mining complex in Sardinia, consists of a jig section integrated with a flotation line. The problem has been studied using a suitable model of the process, based upon experimental and field data pertaining to both the characteristics of the feed material and the performance of machinery. Data have been automatically processed with the aid of a computer to find the optimum setting of each section, in order to maximize profit for each kind of ore separately fed to the plant. Moreover, the advantages of blending the various concentrates - not all of them individually marketable - are also demonstrated. The overall economic result can be improved provided suitable proportions of each kind of ore are fed to the plant. Such information is fundamental for the long-term planning of exploitation of available reserves, and provides guidelines for further prospecting. The paper illustrates the washability characteristics of the ore's and describes in detail the model adopted. The results of data processing are then presented in the form of computer graphs and discussed. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the advantages of resorting to Operations Research as an aid to management.

"The objective of the study was to determine the type and distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in the phosphate flotation concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant in central Iran, in order to understand their leaching behaviour. Samples of the concentrate were prepared and analysed using XRF, XRD, ICP, and EMPA. The Ce, Nd, La, and Y contents were 5608, 2227, 1959, and 679.7 mg/kg, respectively. The main REEbearing minerals in the concentrate are fluorapatite, monazite, and xenotime. Apatite is the chief mineral of the concentrate and the ratio of apatite to monazite is greater than 60. From EMPA analysis, monazite contains a much higher proportion of REEs than apatite, but more than 50% of the REE content of the concentrate is in apatite, as this is the main mineral constituent of the concentrate. During the leaching of REEs in the phosphoric acid production process, more than 99% of the total rare earth values report to the large amounts of phosphogypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) formed during the dissolution reaction. Accordingly, two process options are suggested for treating the Esfordi concentrate. In the first option, the concentrate is treated with 98% H2SO4 at 200–300°C. After digestion and water leaching, phosphorus and REEs are precipitated out of solution. In the second option, the concentrate is treated in a pre-leach stage. The process residue from the pre-leach stage is then subjected to acid digestion at elevated temperature for phosphoric acid production.IntroductionThe rare earth elements (REEs) comprise a set of 17 chemical elements in the periodic table, specifically the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. REEs and alloys that contain them are used in devices such as computer memory, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, catalytic converters, magnets, fluorescent lighting, and many more (Krishnamurthy and Gupta, 2004). China supplies about 94% of the REE demand, with the remaining 6% coming from Russia and Estonia, the USA, India, Malaysia, and Brazil (Zhanheng, 2011). Increased industrial development in China has prompted the Chinese government to limit annual export quotas to approximately 35 kt of rare earth oxides (REOs), while non-Chinese annual demand is expected to reach 80 kt by the year 2015. This constriction of supply is being met by the development of many new rare earth mining projects, each of which has its own unique mining and processing challenges (Jordens, Cheng, and Waters, 2013). One of these projects is the Esfordi phosphate project, which is located in Yazd Province in central Iran. The concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant contains 1.2–1.5% REEs."

A Seminar to discuss 'Reactivity of Line in Steel Making' was held in the auditorium of Iscor's Headquarters Building in Pretoria on the 5th August, 1971. The Institute organised this Seminar on the occasion of the visit of Dr Obst of the Rheinische Kalkstein Werke GMBH, Wuelfrath, West Germany. The latter is one of the largest lime companies in the world and Dr Obst is in charge of their research laboratory. He and his co-workers have earned a reputation for their research into reactivity of lime in steel making. This work is also of great importance to the steel industry in this country, particularly with the changes which are occurring with the introduction of basic oxygen furnaces. Some 80 persons representing most of the major steel companies attended this Seminar. Dr Obst presented his most interesting paper which he illustrated with projector slides. This paper is printed in full in this journal. This was followed by several contributions and active discussions. The first contribution was made by Dr T. B. Beeton of the Research and Development Department, Iscor. He gave a brief summary of the studies on reactive lime carried out at Iscor since 1968. Their work was particularly related to the selection and definition of the various reactivity tests and the correlation of these with plant results. He demonstrated that the DIN methods, particularly the Din (40°) test, gave the best results and reported that good agreement had been reached between Iscor, Highveld and Northern Lime on future test procedures. Mr B. Lowther of The Northern Lime Company then dealt with problems associated with the production of high reactive lime. The rotary kilns at The Northern Lime plant at Lime Acres are particularly suitable for the production of high-reactive lime, because this type of kiln lends itself to accurate control of temperatures and retention times. Several problems, however, exist. Because of the long haul distances and the deterioration of reactive lime by absorption of CO2 and water, high reactive lime is not suitable for most customers. To constantly be changing kiln conditions to produce relatively small quantities of high-reactive lime, therefore, causes problems. Highveld Steel at present is the only company requiring high-reactive lime and a satisfactory product is now being produced at a cost because kiln capacity is reduced and fuel costs are higher. Dr P. R. Jochens, of the National Institute for Metallurgy then submitted data to show how the reactivity of soft burnt reactive lime deteriorated due to long railage hauls. Detailed sampling of trucks had been carried out leaving the lime works and on receipt at Highveld and it was demonstrated that there was deterioration in the top layers of the truck. This top layer protected the balance of the lime which is still in good condition on arrival at Highveld. Exposure to atmosphere by further handling and storage into the bunkers at Highveld, however, resulted in further severe deterioration in the lime reactivity and the lime when finally fed to the Basic Oxygen Furnace is reduced to one third to one quarter of the original reactivity value. The same deterioration does not occur with normal run of kiln lime, which is burnt harder, but still has a satisfactory reactivity for most purposes. Mr A. A. Hejja of the Department of Metallurgy, Witwatersrand University then made a contribution on the metallurgical aspects of the use of lime of different reactivities in the Basic Oxygen Furnace and the effect on desulphurization efficiencies. He gave a wealth of data on actual tests which had been carried out and came up with the surprising conclusion that the deterioration of high-reactive lime due to transport did not have as serious an effect on the efficiency of desulphurization as one would have expected. The efficiency was good provided high-reactive lime in the first instance had been produced, irrespective of whether it had deteriorated thereafter. Poor efficiency was obtained only when the lime in the first instance was produced in an unreactive form. The temperature rise in the Basic Oxygen Furnace also has a definite effect. If lime is introduced when the temperature is too high, soft burnt reactive lime becomes hard burnt and unreactive before it can dissolve in the slag. Use of ferromanganese slag assists dissolution of lime. There was a great deal of discussion following these contributions. Particular interest was expres8ed in the special lime described by Dr Obst. This consists of a mixture of fine lime which is premixed with fluxes and either briquetted or pelletised. The question of injecting finely ground lime as an alternative was also discussed. Both these systems eliminate the necessity for highly reactive lime. With smaller lime particles, larger surfaces are exposed thereby ensuring more rapid dissolution in the molten slag. The discussions generally were lively and informative and all present derived benefit from learning of the experiences of others.
