A number of issues relating to the computational aspects of pillar design are addressed in this paper. The computation of average pillar stress values is important when attempting to establish criteria for pillar design and in the analysis of the stability of tabular pillar layouts. One of the default ?classic? numerical methods that are used to determine pillar stresses is the displacement discontinuity method. In many instances it is not clearly understood that this approach does suffer from some limitations, particularly in relation to the fact that in coarse element simulations, the simulated average pillar stress (APS) can depend on the chosen mesh size. The nature of this error is highlighted in this paper and some strategies are suggested to bound the magnitude of these errors. It is demonstrated as well that the popular linear stiffness approximation to pillar or seam compressibility does appear to allow reasonably accurate estimates of the average pillar stress when either the pillar height is varied or when the seam modulus differs from the host rock modulus. A practical implication of this study is that if the seam modulus is noticeably lower than that of the host rock, such as for coal seams, it is important to use a linear stiffness constitutive model for the pillars rather than a ?rigid? pillar assumption. This added complexity seems unnecessary, however, when simulating hard rock pillars in mines where the seam modulus is very similar to that of the surrounding rock.

Hydraulic fracturing technology is presented as a solution to improve permeability and thus solve the extraction problem of coal seam gas in low-permeability gas-bearing coal seams. Given an existing group of original cracks, the propagation of main hydraulic cracks and hydraulic wing cracks was simulated using realistic failure process analysis software. The process represents the structural transformation of hydraulic fracturing and permeability improvements caused by it. In addition, a field test for improving the permeability of gassy coal seams by hydraulic fracturing was also conducted. The propagation of the main cracks and wing cracks by hydraulic fracturing forms a network of original joint cracks, hydraulic wing cracks, and main hydraulic cracks, which improve the permeability of the coal seam. High-pressure water in the drill hole and in the main hydraulic cracks permeates the two flanks of the hole, forming the permeating water pressure. With an increase in drill water pressure and an extension of the main hydraulic cracks, the permeating water pressure on both sides of the main hydraulic cracks in the coal mass also increases. Hydraulic cracks tend to form connections through rock bridges. The extension of hydraulic wing cracks through connections in the rock bridges between the cracks transforms the rock mass to a fractured structure and improves its permeability. Hydraulic fracturing technology for improving permeability in underground conditions can increase the amount of gas drainage by a factor of 15. A stress relief area develops at a radial distance of 10-2.0 m from the hydraulic fracturing drill hole, while an area of rising stresses, called the pressurized area, develops a further 15 m away from the pressurized hole. Practice has proved the existence of the stress transfer phenomenon and the high stress area after fracturing. This kind of hydraulic fracturing technology is more effective in holes drilled from underground than in surface drill holes, with respect to costs and controllability, and is therefore the major trend in gas drainage development in coal mines.

A risk evaluation model has been developed, that enables the quantification of expected injuries and economic losses resulting from rockfalls associated with a support system in a given geotechnical environment. This enables the comparison of different support systems based on the expected frequency of injuries and the total cost of the support system, including the expected economic losses. The model takes into consideration the variability in joint orientations and joint strength within the geotechnical environment and the variability and quality of support systems. The quantification of the benefits of other rockfall risk-mitigating strategies, such as the effectiveness of barring or monitoring, are also incorporated in the model. The risk model is described in this paper and the validation of the model and case studies are described in Part II.

Low-grade, complex mineral deposits have resulted in the need for complicated large-throughput processing plants delivering increased productivity, reliability, and utilization, together with reducing operational costs. Complex mineralogy has resulted in complicated process flow sheets designed to recover minerals as efficiently as possible. In addition, the remote location of many minerals¬-processing plants, continuously rising energy costs, and fierce competition pose significant challenges to the modern mine, compounded by a global scarcity of qualified and experienced operational personnel. Over the last decade the Internet and automation technologies have undergone major advancements. Automation technologies, solutions, and concepts that existed, but were considered risky or unreliable prior to the year 2000, have now gained acceptance and matured. Furthermore, new technologies and different collaboration schemes have appeared, offering innovative solutions to the mining industry to address many of the challenges described. These advancements in reliable remote systems that access technology through the Internet provide significant opportunity to support mining operations, enhance process performance, provide engineering services, and proactively anticipate and execute maintenance services. This paper references a global survey of automation trends in the mining industry and the potential for an intelligent collaborative environment using automation technologies to exploit opportunities in operating the plant of the future, increasing effectiveness, and reducing operational costs. A variety of possibilities are described, including asset management solutions, remote access capabilities, performance monitoring solutions, advanced process control technologies, and the formation of an intelligent collaborative environment. A real example where this technology is used to support the operation and maintenance at a cement plant in Egypt is given to underpin the concepts described in this paper.

Despite economic law and policy instruments with righteous intentions, the politics of resource nationalism could render these instruments unworkable. South Africa is a case in point. After the establishment of democracy, the country's outdated law and policy framework was replaced with a modern system, and in many respects an exemplary one. Converting the privately-owned mineral right system into a scheme of state custodianship allowed for several resource nationalism instruments, in addition to a resources royalty structure that first, compensates for the loss of a non-renewable resource; second, provides for optimal resource use through encouraging value addition to mineral production; and third, effectively targets economic rents. However, despite these improvements, the country went through a process of fierce debate on whether or not mines should be nationalized: the debate was fuelled by public anger with claims of political non-delivery. The result was considerable noise because of public unawareness of facts and distortion of the facts in political rhetoric. The purpose of this article is, first, to establish the status of resource nationalism in South Africa's mineral and fiscal frameworks; second, to give an opinion on the findings of the African National Congress's document on state intervention (Maximising the Developmental Impact of the People's Mineral Assets: State Intervention in the Minerals Sector (SIMS), 2012); and third, to fruitfully contribute to the fundamental discussion on how South Africans benefit from their mineral riches. The methodology is to start with explaining resource nationalism as an international issue for the extractive industries; then to offer an overview of existing resource nationalism instruments in South Africa-along with their effectiveness in attracting rents and investment. The major finding is that South Africa has resource nationalism firmly ingrained in its current suite of instruments. However, it is necessary to address the perceptions of bad governance, and above all, maintain the stability of the rules governing mineral development in South Africa.

Diamondiferous linear beaches in Mining Area No. 1 have been the mainstay of Namdeb?s diamond production for more than 80 years. Most of the onshore beaches have been mined out, but in recent years mining has been extended offshore into the surf zone through a process of beach accretion. A total of 61.6 million carats has been produced from the gravel beaches since their discovery in 1928, and Mining Area No. 1 is considered to have great remaining potential from areas currently submerged under water. To date, the surf zone has remained largely unexplored due to the consistently strong winds, currents, and large waves which make access to this area extremely difficult. This paper describes the processes used in developing a practical methodology for exploration of the surf zone in a domain extending approximately 22 km long in a northwest?southeast direction and 0.3 km wide in a perpendicular direction adjacent to the current Mining Area No 1. The vigorous surf zone poses multiple technical challenges in terms of obtaining geological and diamond information. In order to access the area for sampling, a jack-up walking probe drill platform (PDP) with a 5-inch diameter reverse-circulation drill has been developed to carry out exploration drilling in the dynamic surf zone. The hydraulically driven platform has eight legs, each of which is 18 m long. Four of the legs are in fixed positions on the fore and aft sides of the platform. The other four moveable legs are fitted to sliding frames attached to the port and starboard sides of the platform. The sets of fixed and moveable legs can be raised and lowered by hydraulically powered jacking stations. By alternately lifting and lowering the sets of fixed and moveable legs in conjunction with the frames moving back and forth horizontally, a walking action is performed by the PDP. The platform can walk at a speed of 10?15 m/h, depending on weather and footwall conditions. Optimization of sampling for diamondiferous gravel occurrence in Mining Area No.1 was undertaken through creation of a virtual orebody on which different sample configurations were tested. The input data for the construction of a virtual orebody comprises a set of drilling data, collected from recently accreted areas directly adjacent to the 22 km × 0.3 km target domain. The input drilling data covers only 34% of the domain, and for the purpose of this study, a single realization is deemed to be sufficient. The texture obtained from using only the drilling data to construct a simulation did not make geological sense; hence it was necessary to make use of analog data in order to improve the simulation. The first analog data used consists of the gully patterns found in the metasedimentary Precambrian bedrock footwall. Gullies are, in general, gravel filled and it is fair to assume that gully patterns form a subset of the total gravel occurrence. Total gravel occurrence includes marine terraces (governed by sealevel stands) above bedrock peaks, together with gravel within gullies below bedrock peaks. The second analog ?data? introduced is through the use of ?expert interpretation?. The indicator drilling data is interpreted by expert opinion and the 2-dimensional result is hand-sketched, digitized, and then pixelated. The pixelated data set is then used as input for variogram calculation. This study cannot provide a single definite optimization result as the nature of the data does not permit this. The use of different validation approaches (conditioning data, where available; expert interpretation; and gully pattern data), however, can give a very good indication of how to balance sampling effort with de-risking aspects related to geological continuity. Work undertaken by sampling the simulation will give an assessment of the relative probabilities of determining gravel occurrence in the study area. This study showed that a 50 m × 400 m cross-configuration will be a good initial sample spacing for highlighting areas where gravel may be absent, and further infill drilling may be required. The relative efficiency of a 50 m × 400 m cross off-set sampling configuration has been demonstrated using a trumpet curve versus sampling effort when using kriging as the estimation method. To evaluate the quantitative tunnel behavior influenced by characteristics of discontinuity, this pa-per executes the parametric study using 2 and 3-dimensional DEM analysis. First of all, this study finds that displacement and the stress of shortcrete are proportioned to frequency of joint and rockbolt axial force is adversely proportioned too. Secondly, it is found that the most sensitive in-put parameter used in Barton-Bandis(BB) model is residual friction angle. Finally, when joint sets are encountered at tunnel excavation face, to identify the most critical joint orientation is very crucial for a stability of tunnel. La thèse a pour but d’étudier les influences sur la stabilité du tunnel, au niveau du réseau de la discontinuité et de la valeur de sa nature aquis par le projet récemment exécuté en vue de mener à l’analyse quantitative de cette stabilité, en appliquant chaque différent paramètre comme la fréquence de diaclase, la constante de résistance des modèles de Barton-Bandis(BB) ainsi que la relation entre le sens d’excavation du tunnel et le réseau de diaclase en 3 dimensions. En fait, cette étude nous a montré que la fréquence de diaclase s’accroît proportionnellement au déplacement et à la contrainte du béton projeté. L’angle de friction résiduel s’est montré le plus sensible à la stabilité du tunnel parmi les modèles de BB. Aussi à travers l’analyse à 3 dimensions, il s’est vérifié que si l’angle de pente du groupe de diaclase est horizontal entre l’axe du tunnel et la direction, il donne une influence importante sur le comportement du tunnel. En particulier, l’influence était la plus importante sur un fond rocheux dont la diaclase horizontale est grande. Auch wird hier eine zweidimensionale Analyse von Ver-bindungen verschiedener Frequenzen in der Gesteinsmasse, eine sensitive Analyse von allen der im Barton-Bandis-Modell (BB) genutzten Parameter und eine Dreidimensional-Analyse mit ver-schiedenen dreidimensionalen geometrischen Veteilungen von Verbindungen ausgefuehrt. Erstens: Die Studie findet heraus, dass Vedraengung und Druck im Shortcrete proportional zur Frequenz von Verbindungen und Axialkraft der Steinbolzen antiproportinal ist. Zweitens: Es wird herausge-funden, dass die am meisten Sensitiven der im BB-Modell angewendeten Eingaben die am Ende uebriggebliebenen Reibungswinkel sind. Und schliesslich wird herausgefunden, dass wenn Ver-bindungsteile an der Tunnelaushoelungsoberflaeche ausgemacht werden, fuer die Tunnelstabiltaet die Identifikation der meist kritischen Verbindungsorientierung sehr bedeutungsvoll.

The minerals industry is committed to the principles of sustain-ability. Reducing water consumption is a priority area, especially for regions of water scarcity. This paper presents a systemic optimization of the water balance of the Skorpion Zinc refinery with the aim of reducing water consumption. An Aspen Plus simulation of the process is used. The validity of the simulation is tested by measuring key output variables and comparing results to plant data. A number of water minimization scenarios are investigated, Including unit operation and circuit configuration changes. The scenarios leading to the largest reduction in water consumption are through the full recycle of treated effluent water, which results in water savings of up to 19%. Reducing process water and/or recycling of untreated water is prohibited by the build-up of trace elements, which affect product purity. The Skorpion process already features a highly optimized water balance, with unit operational changes merely resulting in a shift in the water balance. 1. ANTECEDENTS This present communication refers to the results of the research project entitled "Training in the correct use of chemical oxygen self rescue apparatus and also an analysis of apparatus autonomy", carried out under the auspices of the Specific Collaboration Agreement signed between the Industry Council of the Principality of Asturias (Spain) and INSALUD (National Silicosis Institute, Spain). The antecedents of this project lie in work undertaken by the National Silicosis Institute aimed at optimising efficiency in the use of chemical oxygen self rescuers through improvements in worker training. To be precise, by means of Agreements drawn up between the above-mentioned parties, a simulator was designed and incorporated as the basis of a training station within the " Fundación Barredo" of the Industry Council of the Principality of Asturias. This has been operative since the year 2001 and, up to the present, 2300 Asturian coal mine workers have been trained there. What prompted this activity was the observation of various errors in the use of the self rescuers, deriving from their innate characteristics, especially with respect to the sensation of discomfort - the high temperature and humidity of the breathed oxygen, resistance and inconvenience - and limited autonomy. It was precisely this insight that, in critical situations, lack of familiarity with the conditions of discomfort likely to be experienced during the evacuation process might lead to rejection of the equipment, with fatal consequences, that has justified the setting up of this training and simulation centre. The centre is able to provide all mine workers with the necessary training, and experience of the characteristic sensations experienced when using such equipment (Fig.. 1).

Since AlphaGo defeated the best human player in the game of Go in 2016 - something thought to be an impossible achievement - machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning have caught the attention of scientists, the media and the general public alike. This recent development in machine learning (let us remember that neural networks have been available for decades now) opens new possibilities in the areas of modelling and process control. However, little has been reported in the minerals processing industry about these new possibilities and opportunities. This paper presents and introduces the topic of reinforcement learning and the different platforms that allow its implementation. The paper shows the consequences of using reinforcement learning for the specific area of process control and optimisation. As an example, the authors present the use of reinforcement learning for the control of a SAG mill closed with a pebble crusher using industrial data from an operation. A comparison with advanced model-based process control is provided, showing the benefits and shortcomings of reinforcement learning as a new control and optimisation technique. This paper examines manning best practice in the Australian mining industry, comparing the mining of gold with mining of other commodities. In particular, the paper considers a range of mining operations and their manning levels as measured by operational benchmarking. The benchmarking results presented cover 7 open pit and 14 underground studies of gold mines in Australia from a database of over 50 studies. The data were collected as part of AMC?s benchmarking and operational improvement studies conducted between 1999 and 2009. The results examine overall manning levels in mining, processing and administration functions. Manning levels for a range of mining methods, including open pit and underground methods, are segmented. Productivity measures such as ore tonnes per man day and metres developed per man day are presented and where direct relationships can be established, the relationships are described. The proportion of supervisory to operations personnel and labour costs as a percentage of total operating costs is highlighted. Minimum manning requirements for the range of mining methods are indicated, irrespective of the size of the operation. The benchmarking results provide guidance by indicating a range of manning numbers and trends which are likely to be appropriate for the scale and type for a range of mining operations. When combined with benchmarked productivity and cost data, manning results help identify potential areas for business improvement, driving gains in the efficiency of labour. Finally, the paper considers perspectives on best practice for manning and the limitations in application of this type of analysis in a global context.

The concept of caring is in most cases confused with material needs and not psychological needs. By giving employees a job, most managers think that employees should be grateful and return the favour by being loyal, productive and working safely. Other managers hold the view that employees can be lucky to have a job. To show and demonstrate that management are caring for the safety of the workforce requires involvement, dedication and commitment. Obtaining the trust and respect of the workforce should be the main thrust of any organization because within trust and respect lie the secret of optimal safety performance. In the last 70 years, all the fatalities and serious injuries that occurred in the mining industry can be traced back to one thing, non-caring. The same safety non-compliances are still observed, reported and planned against as 70 years ago, and strange as it may sound, the same injuries occur the same way. The question could be asked: Does the mining industry need more risk assessments? More codes of conduct? More engineering. Or does the mining industry need more caring?

The three-product cyclone was originally developed in Russia and is now extensively used in China. The cyclone has recently entered the South African coal industry, and with the obvious advantages that this item of process equipment offers our ever-evolving industry it is safe to assume that it will add value to dense medium circuits in South Africa. Some of the possible applications include: ? Producing multiple products using a single dense medium circuit. These can typically be a primary product with calorific value of 27.50 MJ/kg and a secondary (middling) product with a calorific value of 22 MJ/kg ? High-density separation with a low circulating medium density. Anglo Thermal Coal and Exxaro have pioneered the use of these units at Umlalazi and New Clydesdale respectively. Extensive test work has been performed at Umlalazi to determine the efficiency of the unit and to determine how it compares with the conventional DSM (Dutch School of Mines) cyclone. Some people in the coal industry were initially sceptical and expected the performance of the three-product cyclone to be inferior to that of the conventional dense medium cyclone. The results of the test work have, however, shown that the efficiency of the unit is comparable to that of the cyclones currently employed. A valid concern expressed is the control over the cut-point density of the second stage separation, and work is on-going to find the optimal way to control the secondary separation density. Theoretically, the secondary separation density can be manipulated by changing the orifices of the unit, especially the spigot of the secondary stage. This remains to be proven, and a series of tests is currently being planned. Whatever the result of these tests may be, the three-product cyclone definitely has a place in the South African coal processing industry as it offers a low OPEX and CAPEX solution for producing multiple products from a single circuit, as well as the ability to operate at very high separation densities, while making use of low-density circulating medium. Nanotechnology can provide solutions to many of the world?s socio-economic challenges. The application of nanomaterials for water treatment and analysis, point-of-care diagnostics and targeted drug delivery systems or devices could improve the quality of life for people in developing countries. Gold colloids have a long history (dating back to the 4th century AD) and are particularly well known for their aesthetic appeal and their therapeutic properties. Since Faraday published a report on the synthesis and properties of colloidal gold in 1857, a reasonable insight into the nature of gold sols (nucleation, growth and kinetics of coagulation) has been developed. Considerable attention has been drawn during the past few decades to the development and optimization of methods for the preparation of gold nanoparticles. In nanoscience and nanotechnology today, gold nanomaterials appear to be the most widely used material by both academics and industrialists. This is due to the extraordinary properties of gold nanoparticles (e.g. optical, catalytic, and magnetic?they are also known to act as strong Raman enhancers and may also amplify fluorescence under certain circumstances). Mintek, through Project AuTEK and the DST/Mintek Nanotechnology Innovation Centre (NIC), has been at the forefront of the development of new industrial uses for gold. Mintek?s gold nanotechnology programme focuses on the development of gold-based nanostructured materials and their applications in health, water and other related areas. While few projects use gold nanoparticles for water treatment and analysis, Mintek?s gold nanoparticles are widely used in the health sector. For example, gold nanoparticles are engineered and produced in large quantities as systems for targeted drug delivery. They are also used as tools for advanced rapid diagnostic tests. Both optical and electrochemical rapid diagnostic methods are developed for the human and animal health sectors for point-of-care testing. This paper gives a brief introduction and overview of gold nanotechnology, and desrcibes the development of some of Mintek?s gold nanoparticle targeted drug delivery systems and lateral flow point of care prototype devices.

In South Africa reprocessing used oil into industrial fuel is commercially attractive. The reprocessed product is sold as a substitute for heavy fuel oil that is derived from crude oil (Rose Foundation, 2008). The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the use of petroleum products such as oil, petrol and diesel in Driefontein Gold Mine. The recovery of oil through recycling has costs implications to the mine while the release of petroleum hydrocarbons due to the poor management of the use of petroleum products has potential to cause pollution and negatively affect soil and water. Environmental legislation such as the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (Act 28, 2002) requires that such negative impacts to the environment be rehabilitated. The rehabilitation cost of pollution caused by petroleum products to the environment increases operational costs in business. Field assessment is conducted to identify the main sources of petroleum product contamination such as leaks in piping, overfills and petroleum spills. The areas that require mitigation would be mapped in the study. Recommendations for mitigation measures will focus on using the best practicable environmental option (BPEO) as well as the best available technology not exceeding excessive cost (BATNEEC). The recovery of oil from the mining industry is generally low and very poor. In this study, the effect of proper management of petroleum products to the mine?s operational costs is investigated and compared to there mediation costs of the impacts caused due to poor management of these products. The study investigates the financial benefit that could be obtained from proper environmental practices and efficient usage of petroleum products in the mining.

In 1994, Nkana smelter commissioned a Multimillion US$ Dollar Chilean Teniente converter (CT) in its operations in order to improve its smelting technological base. The main objective was to reduce the overall smelting energy costs and increase the sulfur capture for sulphuric acid production to support the company?s leaching operations at Nchanga Tailings Leach Plant. A decade of CT operations have since ensured following its installation and startup. This paper provides a Technical and Operational Audit of the performance of the CT in the first 10 years of its operations at Nkana smelter.

For years urethane screen surfaces have been used in a wide range of wet screening applications where openings as fine as 75 microns and coarser have been used. In dry screening operations these same urethane screen surfaces have been relegated to only the coarser separation ranging from 1.0 mm and larger. The purpose of this paper is to expose the reader to new developments in both screen surface and screening equipment technologies, which allow an end user to consider urethane screen surfaces for dry screening operations where separations as fine as 75 microns are required. These technologies allow an end user to realize the inherent advantages of urethane in wear resistance while also realizing the benefits that a high open area urethane screen surface can bring. These benefits include non-blinding characteristics and feed capacities, which rival that of traditional stainless-steel woven wire mesh screen surfaces. The paper will highlight the features of this patented urethane screen surface technology and the screening machines in conjunction with which they are used. There will also be a presentation of several case studies of commercial installations where these technologies are utilized. These case studies are from the mineral sands industry; therefore relevance to the conference is direct and not inferred. Included in the paper will also be constraints, which must be taken into account when considering urethane screen surfaces such as temperature and chemical attack. This paper will expose potential end users to a possibility of using screens to achieve extremely accurate size separations in applications where screens were previously not considered. The paper will explain and demonstrate that prior concerns of screen surface blinding, high screen surface consumption rates and large screen surface area requirements can be eliminated by proper utilization of high open area urethane screen surfaces.

The dewatering of coal, and particularly fine coal, continues to challenge coal prepatration engineers to find a cost-effective solution. With known world oil reserves being depleted daily, it is envisaged that the future price of coal may justify the use of thermal drying to achieve lower coal product moisture levels. The effect of exposure of the coal to elevated toemperatures on the mechanical strength of the coal was investigated. It was found that temperature does not play a major role in determining the volume breakage of a particle and that other variables such as orientation during impact has a much greater influence. A double breakage mechanism was reported during the grindability tests. Surface, as well as volume breakage, occurs for the first 4 minutes while only surface breakage takes place thereafter. Due to this double breakage action, it was found that exposure to temperature does play a role in the amount of breakage and breakage rates during grindability tests. It was also concluded that a particle will break to an optimum size due to impact, after which only its surface will grind away as it is subjected to breakage forces.

Anglo Platinum's Polokwane Smelter is situated outside Polokwane, in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Wet concentrate is received from various concentrators along the Eastern Bushveld Complex. Approximately 60% of the total concentrate received is from UG2 Reef, and 40% is from Merensky Reef. The concentrate is dried in two flash dryers, and smelted in a single 168 MVA furnace. A PGM-rich nickel-copper matte is cast, crushed and transported to Rustenburg for converting. The plant was commissioned in March 2003. The wet concentrate, containing 12-18% moisture, is weighed, sampled by one of two auger samplers, and off-loaded into a concentrate shed, either directly through a grizzly into a hopper, or onto the floor. From the shed the concentrate is conveyed to 12 concrete silos. Each of the two identical flash dryers can be fed from six silos. From the flash dryers concentrate is transported pneumatically to a 3 000-ton dry concentrate storage silo. The flash dryers are rated at a nominal 66 tph of dry concentrate at 14% moisture, while the furnace can smelt 90 tph of dry concentrate. Therefore both flash dryers are required to operate when the furnace runs at design throughput. Each flash dryer consists of a hot gas generator (HGG), a disintegrator and drying column, and a section for gas/solids separation. In the HGG, gas heated up to 700° C is produced from the combustion of coal peas in a fluidized sand bed. The hot gas and wet concentrate are introduced to the disintegrator at the bottom of the drying column. The disintegrator breaks up any lumps of concentrate, and throws the concentrate up into the drying column, where it travels co-currently with the hot gas. A fan draws the hot gas from the drying column and through the gas/solids separation section, which consists of three primary cyclones, a multiclone and a high-temperature bag house. The dry concentrate reports to a 450-ton dry concentrate storage bin. A portion of dry concentrate is recycled to the wet concentrate feed in a paddle mixer, so that concentrate that is too wet does not enter the disintegrator. The drying column outlet temperature is controlled at 120° C. Coal is received by road, screened for oversize and conveyed to a 400-ton concrete silo. From here it is pneumatically conveyed to a small feed bin at each of the HGG' s. The optimization work consists of process control improvements relating to the HGG outlet temperature, to control the drying column temperature during the ramp-up of the HGG outlet temperature and bag filters. Furthermore a heat balance is used to evaluate options to increase the instantaneous drying capacity of the existing equipment. The coal consumption derived from the heat balance is compared with the actual coal consumption. The purpose of the optimization work is to achieve an operating schedule for the flash dryers such that they operate simultaneously for as short time as possible. Most of the time one flash dryer should operate, allowing maintenance to be done on the other flash dryer, while drawing down the dry concentrate stock.
