A set of six design principles for rock engineering was developed by Bieniawski: design objectives; minimum uncertainty; simplicity of design components; state-of-the-art practice; optimization; and constructability. These principles translate into a ten-step design process. Although this methodology was developed for rock engineering, it is applicable to any design process, feasibility study, etc. Diligent use of such a process will ensure that a defensible design or evaluation has been carried out. Recently a ?strategic conversation? process has been identified by Ilbury and Sunter that includes the following ten steps: scope; players; rules of the game; key uncertainties; scenarios; SWOT analysis; options; decisions; measurable outcomes; and meaning of winning. A comparison of these steps with those of the design process shows a remarkable correlation. This is perhaps not surprising since engineering design is a strategic up-front issue, and front end loading in a project is critical to achieve the expected project performance. Based on the close correlation between the strategic conversation and engineering design processes, a circular design process, rather than a linear process, is proposed. The ?circle of design? better reflects the importance of review and monitoring in the two phases of successful design and implementation?defining the design, and executing the design.

A detailed fundamental study has been made of the various factors that influence the partial reactions comprising the electrochemical model of the cementation of gold from cyanide solutions by zinc. The effects of cyanide concentration, pH, agitation, additions of lead, and the presence of various impurity ions on both the anodic dissolution of zinc and the cathodic reduction of gold have been investigated. The results are used to explain the influence of these variables on the rate of cementation, and possible implications of this work for plant practice are discussed.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. Orebodies that contain more than one economically important mineral are generally evaluated by parametric cut-off grades. This approach often leads to mis-valuation of mineral deposits because cut-off grades are not based on the grades of each individual mineral and, because of the parametric formulation, are only indirectly related to the individual grade distributions. The only realistic approach is a formulation that accounts separately for each component mineral. The grid search method can be used as a means of multi-mineral cut-off grade optimization in this context. This paper describes the use of the grid search method in cut-off grade optimization for multi-mineral deposits. The authors introduce the general concepts of the method and formulate its application to cut-off grade optimization; they describe a software implementation of the method that can accommodate cut-off grade optimization for mineral deposits that contain up to three economic minerals. There are many potential uses in gold mining for an initially stiff element of backfill that will yield at a predetermined load and maintain that load to beyond a compression of 30%. Such elements could be used as yielding rib pillars, as replacements for more conventional supporting packs, as con- fining bulkheads for mass backfill, as supports to provide lateral constraint, and load-carrying augmentation to overloaded rock pillars. The paper describes a system of reinforced cemented backfill that can be used to provide the above requirements. The necessary characteristics of the reinforcing and the cemented tailings are described together with the method of design to obtain a predetermined stiffness and yield load. The load-compression characteristics of the reinforced tailings elements are described and the effect of changing various of the design parameters is demonstrated.

"Low-cost calcium lignosulphonate (CL), which is a byproduct of the wood pulping industry, was investigated as a potential binder during laboratoryscale pelletization of inertinite-rich high-ash coal fines from the Highveld Coalfield of South Africa. Coal-binder mixtures containing between 1 and 15% calcium lignosulphonate were prepared, pressed, and ultimate, proximate, porosity, XRD, and XRF analyses obtained. It was found that increased pressure during pelletization results in increased attractive forces, due to increased interparticle contact areas. FTIR analysis showed that chemical interactions occur between coal fines and the binder, as evidenced by the formation of new C-O ether-type bonds. The presence of moisture during pelletization enhanced surfactant activity of the binder. Chemical interactions between the coal and the binder seem to be mainly electrostatic, driven by Ca2+ from the calcium lignosulphonate, which may act as a bridge between the anionic parts of the binder and the surface of the coal. IntroductionCoal has over the years remained South Africa’s major energy source, with over 90% of the country’s electricity being produced via coal-fired processes (Arndt et al., 2016). Sasol’s coal conversion technology alone provides more than 40% of South Africa’s liquid fuel requirements (van Dyk, Keyser, and Coertzen, 2006). The production of high-grade coal requires the processing of run-of-mine (ROM) resources by a combination of processes which include crushing, screening, and washing (Radloff, Kirsten, and Anderson, 2003). These processes result in the generation of coal fines (< 0.5 mm) which, until recently, have been discarded into slimes dams (le Roux, Campbell, and Smit, 2012). Several issues are associated with slimes dams, among which are the costs of transportation of these fines from the place of origin to the discard point (often a considerable distance), and the potential environmental effects due to seepage of toxic materials into surrounding ecosystems (Clausen, 1973).Consequently, utilization of these coal fines is an area of great interest. Mechanical densification of fine coal by means of pelletization and/or briquetting to larger sizes for use in technologies that require lump coal, such as chain-grate stokers and fixed-bed gasifiers, has been shown not only to reduce environmental risks (Mangena et al., 2004), but also to significantly reduce storage and transportation costs (Mani et al., 2001). Pelletization is the process by which solid particles are consolidated into uniform, usually hard, impact-resistant agglomerates, rendering them useful as a fuel with sufficient calorific value for domestic and industrial utilization (Finney, Sharifi, and Swithenbank, 2009)."

The land disposal of voluminous fine-grained tailings from the processing of mined ore bodies poses a long-term risk to the surrounding environment and local communities, while also representing a loss of valuable natural resources; including water, land and mined minerals. To date, the development and practical implementation of alternative approaches and technologies for removing risk and reducing the burden associated with these wastes, particularly in South Africa, remains limited, and value recovery is largely limited to the extraction of precious metals. To this end, researchers at the University of Cape Town have developed a programmatic multi-phased approach to explore and develop opportunities for the valorisation of large-volume mine wastes, based on the innovation value chain. This paper outlines this conceptual approach and presents key outcomes from its application for the specific case of sulfide-bearing coal processing wastes from South African collieries. Through the application of a combination of qualitative and quantitative tools and methodologies, a number of potentially viable opportunities and processing routes for value recovery and bulk re-purposing of these wastes have been identified and tested on a laboratory scale. Studies have, however, also shown that there are several technical and non-technical factors currently constraining commercial application of these opportunities. Overcoming these constraints will require a commitment to innovative waste management approaches and effective multi-sectoral collaboration. In this paper, which is aimed to serve as a review article, first of all a breakdown of the earth?s total water reserves is given. The usage areas of water in the mining industry are mentioned and these uses are briefly outlined, together with the main pollution potential of each. According to this, most of the water (almost 80% of it) is utilized in processing. Later on, probable damages that the mining would give to groundwater as a result of acid mine drainage, heavy metal pollution, euthrophication and deoxygenation is described. Finally, the measures and controls that should be taken against water contamination in mines are presented.

The paper describes a CFD model developed for 76mm Dense Medium Cyclone (DMC) using Ansys Fluent Software to gain insights into the separation of particles according to their size and density. The simulation used in this paper includes the Reynolds stress model to predict the turbulence inside the cyclone body. An Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase CFD model was applied to model a number of physical aspects such as the separation of coal particles and the segregation of magnetite media solids. The experimental results generated in a laboratory scale DMC were used for the validation purpose and the predicted results of CFD have been validated for the flow splits of water, magnetite and coal. The simulation results obtained from the Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase model revealed that the prediction agreed with experimental results, and matched reasonably well in terms of the mass flow rates of water, magnetite and coal. Furthermore, the partition curve of the DMC when mapped for the separation of - 3.0+0.50 mm size also showed to be in agreement with the experimentally obtained curves. The gravity of cut (SG50), also predicted by the Eulerian-Eulerain multiphase CFD model, was found to be in the vicinity of observed experimental value of SG50. As part of a broad program to optimise the performance of their grinding circuit, BHP Billiton Cannington have installed an OCS© Expert system together with three VisioRockTM online particle size analysis cameras. The main purpose of the system is to stabilise grind size and feed to the flotation circuit. This particular application of OCS© is the first installation to incorporate Metso Minerals Process Technology-Asia Pacific&apos;s (MMPT AP) Dynamic SAG/AG Mill Model, which is able to predict numerous mill parameters that were previously unable to be measured with the existing plant instrumentation. Integrated into the logic of the control algorithm are online vision based, particle size measurements of the AG mill feed and recycle crusher product. This paper will describe the history of the project from initiation to date, the model and OCS© logic configuration, and demonstrate the significant benefits realised at Cannington mine.

Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. Wilson M.Sc., M.I.M.M., F.S.A.I.M.M., M.A.I.M.E. and P. C. Graham M.Sc. (Eng.) Gold mining is being carried out at ever-increasing depths in South Africa. For reasons of safety and human comfort, it is becoming imperative for raises to be developed by means other than conventional drilling and blasting. Raise-boring is an attractive alternative method. Initial raise-boring experiences in South African gold mines showed disappointingly high costs due to the abrasivity and difficulty of drilling Witwatersrand quartzites. Consequently, a research and development project was instigated with the objective of making raise-boring an economically viable technique in hard abrasive rock. A Robbins 61R raise-borer was made available to the Research and Development team and a number of raises have been drilled. During these trials two advances in cutter design were tested. This paper presents the results obtained, including drilling costs, and provides details of the equipment used.

The Mine Planning Department of Rio Tinto Management Services South Africa has installed an interactive graphic work station to assist with the long- term mine planning of Palabora. Previously, the planning was drafted manually after which digitised areas were fed to the computerised ore reserve system. This method was slow, tedious, prone to error and was becoming incapable of meeting new planning parameters. To assist the planning engineer an interactive graphic system was developed, and subsequently a rewrite of the ore reserve reporting system was incorporated. The work station has reasonable computing power and, when not utilised for graphics, has been found suitable for the evaluation of various non- graphical applications, a recent example of which was the in-pit crusher investigation. This project, in contrast to similar studies, was not based on a fixed system throughput but rather on a well designed system which would be operated at its own optimum capacity. In order to determine the probable throughput a simple simulator was designed to model the crushing and conveying system. This paper describes the investigation into the specifications for the work station, the selection of hardware, operating system and languages. An over- view is then given of the graphic planning system. The in-pit crushing simulation has been included as an example of how the work station has been applied to other, non graphical, applications.

To improve the climatic environment underground the German coal mining industry has installed refrigerators with a capacity of 300 MW cooling power. One third of this total is accounted for by central refrigeration plants with more than 5 MW capacity. The central refrigeration comprises three stages: mechanical cooling, transport and distribution of chilled water via pipelines and exchange of heat in the air coolers. Of these three stages only the mechanical generation of chilled water has been resolved satisfactorily. Transport (including distribution) and exchange require further technical research. The Mining Institute of the Aachen University of Technology has done extensive studies on this subject, concentrating on controlling the flow of chilled water according to demand in the mine. Additionally, the favourable exchange in the air coolers is taken into account. The studies are based on a model mine which simulates the conditions in deep coal mines in Germany. The simulation program represents firstly the condition of the mine air at the location of the air being cooled, then the heat exchange in the air cooler itself, and finally the transport of the chilled water from the central refrigerator to the consumer. The program also reproduces the seasonal and operational changes in conditions of mine air as well as different air cooler designs. A regulated distribution of chilled water is also suggested. Finally, estimations of costs can be made as an aid for further planning.

Dredging is an industry in constant transformation. It has changed tremendously in the last decades. The traditional dredging activity, like construction and maintaining ports and harbours, desilting of drainage and irrigation channels, keeping reservoirs at depths and removing sediments from waterways, is still of importance. However, it is surpassed by other applications of dredging technology. Reclamation is an important example, where large amounts of sand are dredged, transported over large distances and used to make new land for industrial, housing, airport and other infrastructural purposes. Beach nourishment and other protective measurements should be mentioned here as well. Other applications like offshore winning of oil and gas, environmental clean-up, mining of interesting minerals like gold, diamonds, titanium and tin as well as aggregates from inland and offshore deposits are of importance. For all of these dredging applications equipment is required, and with changing circumstances and constraints, the design and use altered significantly. Larger dredging depths and increasing capacities require an impressive scale-up of equipment and tools. A demand for higher accuracy and selectivity set the requirement for a higher level of automation and control in combination with a well trained crew. Operations under more difficult circumstances and with other soil characteristics necessitated the development of new dredging components and systems. A sound basis for all developments was and still is a better understanding of the various dredging processes. This paper will highlight some eye-catching developments in the dredging industry. It will focus on issues in the field of hydraulic transport such as ever increasing capacity and dredging depth, as well as the pumping of large size materials.

The following contributions were received to the paper entitled &apos;Safety in South African mines: An analysis of accident statistics&apos;, by H.S. Eisner and J.P. Leger, which appeared in the J. S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metal., vol. 88, no. 1, Jan. 1988, pp. 1-7. Contribution by H. WAGNER* The paper by Dr H.S. Eisner and Mr J.P. Leger is critical of the safety situation on South African mines and portrays the industry as having little concern for the health and safety of its workers. Moreover, the casual reader gains the impression of deliberate misinformation by the industry to the public concerning safety maters. Furthermore, certain socio-economic reasons are advanced for the apparent differences between the fatality and injury rates reported for coal mines in South Africa and those for the United Kingdom. Contribution by S.A. WATTS. Authors Eisner and Leger are to be commended on their paper, which highlights, according to their interpretation, various shortcomings of both the Chamber of Mines accident statistics and those published by the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs. Authors&apos; Reply We gratefully acknowledge Dr Wagner&apos;s contribution to the discussion on our paper. For convenience, we shal use his sequence of comments in our reply. Before doing so, however, it may be useful to explain how our paper came to be written. After the explosion at Hlobane Colliery in 1983, one of us (HSE), in February 1984, was retained by the lawyers acting for some of the dependants of the victims to advise on technical maters relating to the explosion. Contribution by Ms S.A. Wats Some of the points made by Ms Wats have already been answered in our comments on Dr Wagner&apos;s contribution. We are fully aware that the number of accidents leading to absences of less than 4 days would be much greater than shown in our bar chart, and are grateful to Ms Wats for drawing attention to the specific exceptions that can make a 1-3 day accident compensable and that are clearly responsible for the relatively low count in that category of the chart.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng) (Chemical) The generation and control of manganese sulphide particle size distribution using various mixing configurations were investigated. Specifically, this paper discusses how varying mixing intensities on a macro and micro scale affect the resultant manganese sulphide particle size distribution (PSD) at a constant concentration. The mixing variations were achieved using various Y- and T-mixers as premixing devices into a jacketed, agitated vessel. The reagents used to generate the seeds were aqueous manganese sulphate and sodium sulphide solutions. The results showed that the absence of micromixing resulted in very poor control of the particle size distribution, the particle size and the number of particles produced. This was due to the fact that the macromixing time is much greater than the corresponding precipitation time, resulting in different mixing regions existing within the reactor. From the micromixing experiments, the T?mixer was found to be the most effective mixing device at lower concentrations due to the T-mixer providing a faster mixing time than the other mixing configurations, thereby effectively localizing the supersaturation and hence controlling the precipitation. The results obtained from the direct addition without the extension pipe (i.e. short mixing time) indicated a general increase in mean particle size and decrease in total particle number at reagent concentration of 0.007 mol.dm-3as compared to the corresponding micromixing experiments. The phenomenon may be due to incomplete crystallization at the immediate exit of the mixing device. Further experiments need to be conducted before any conclusions can be drawn about the precipitation mechanisms.

A colloquium on &apos;Recent Developments in Wearresistant Materials&apos;, organized by the Technical Programme Committee: Physical Metallurgy of the SAIMM, was held at Mintek on 7th May, 1985. After delegates had been welcomed by Dr P.T. Wedepohl, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr J.D. Austin, President of the SAIMM, delivered the opening address. Corrigenda to article on copper* I read with considerable interest the recent articles on copper by Mr C.O. Beale as published in the Journal. However, in Part 11 the section dealing with Prieska Copper Mines (Pty) Limited contained several factual errors, details of which are given below.
