The gold mine sector is presently facing low gold prices as well as technological challenges. Its competitiveness and survival will depend on new mining methods and equipment to improve ore extraction. In 1999, Natural Resources Canada has invested new funds over a period of three years at CANMET’s Experimental Mine to establish the Narrow-Vein Mining Project. A team of engineers and researchers specialized in mining, mechanics and electronics engineering are working to meet the critical need of ore-extraction technology. CANMET’s programme in mechanization and automation for narrow-vein mining had, prior to 1999, realised several important achievements, many in co-operation with a consortium of mining companies(Soredem). The investment of new funds in this area will contribute to develop technologies to improve the productivity, as well as health and safety conditions of the narrow-vein mining industry. Several important impacts of this project will be monitored. In particular, a database of methods and equipment used in narrow-vein mining is being developed. A key thrust is to identify operators’ needs with respect to the development and automation of mining methods and equipment. Based on those needs, research and development projects will be created. The paper will present the objectives of the narrow-vein mining project and some of the results, including the web site developed to present the results of the project.

The Third International Conference on Coal Research was held in Sydney, Australia, in October 1976. The papers and proceedings of the Conference will be published in Australia on behalf of the International Committee for Coal Research in April 1977. The papers deal with the economics and practicability of coal conversion, coal winning, resources assessment, safety and dust, and coal and power generation, together with an appreciation of coal potential by the deputy chairman of the U.K. National Coal Board. Copies of the report are available to organizations within member countries of ICCR at a cost of 35 dollars (Australian), including postage, by application to the Executive Officer, Third ICCR, Box 3842 GPO Sydney, Australia 2001. Research into the ferrous metallurgy of Rhodesian Iron Age societies M. D. PRENDERGAST (Visitor) Iron-working was a widespread economic activity in Iron Age Rhodesia, and merits historical and metallurgical investigation. However, the research done so far has been incidental and poorly disseminated. This paper reviews the available evidence and the ways in which it can be interpreted by archaeologists and historical metallurgists. Interface levels in flotation columns are generally measured with the aid of a pressure-sensitive Instrument, e.g. a differential-pressure cell. This paper criticizes the use of this type of measurement, and discusses other methods that are claimed to give more accurate measures of interface levels. The paper focuses on the development of methods based on the measurement of conductivity across the froth-slurry interface. These are often sabotaged by variations in the conductivity of the feed slurry, particularly when the pH of the slurry IS being controlled, e.g. In sulphide flotation. Methods of improving the accuracy and reliability of this technique are described. The result IS a robust, easy-to maintain level-control scheme that successfully rejects large disturbances in plant operation (including a 5:1 change in slurry conductivity) while controlling levels to an accuracy of I 4 cm.

In 1988 the Japan Iron and Steel Federation started a research-and-development programme known as DIOS (direct iron-ore smelting). Eight Japanese integrated steel producers and the Coal Mining Research Centre, subsidized by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, are involved in the project. The aim of the programme is to have a 500 v/d pilot plant for the production of iron via an oxygen-coal in-bath smelting converter in operation by mid 1993. The three main components of the DIOS process are as follows: ?a fluidized bed for the pre-reduction of iron-ore fumes ?in-bath smelting reduction in a converter ?off-gas reforming by the addition of coal fines. The main drive is to provide a smelting process that is more energy-effective, using coal instead of coke and/or electricity. The advantages claimed include inter alia ?direct use of fine iron ore ?direct use of non-coking coals-low coal consumption ?low capital expenditure-replaces costly coke ovens, agglomeration plants, and the blast furnace ?economical production on mini-plant scale ?less of an impact on the environment. This concept of 'direct steel has been carried over to the production of stainless steel direct from the ores, again bypassing such energy-intensive units as the submerged-arc furnace for the production of ferrochromium. A number of Japanese companies have indicated a certain amount of success. Several interacting elements are recognized that could have a productivity-limiting aspect. The possibility of the direct production of stainless steel from chromite is discussed briefly with reference to the Highveld of the eastern Transvaal as a possible site for such a plant

The ability to conduct real-time material tracking in mines has been a long-standing challenge. Technological innovations such as radio frequency identification technology (RFID) have over the years contributed to the effective tracking of material flow and reporting of metal content. This paper outlines the laboratory procedures and results from testing the suitability of microdot technology as a viable technique for real-time material tracking in mining. The paper clarifies the reasons for conducting the test and presents the material safety data sheet (MSDS) from a South African and Canadian perspective. Microdots from three aerosol systems were immersed in water, heated to 100°C, and crushed into coarse and fine material. These tests were used to ascertain if the technology could withstand mining conditions. A strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis was used to evaluate and compare microdot technology with RFID. It was shown that microdot technology has some potential to track ore parcels because data integrity was retained after exposure to post-blast mining conditions. However, more improvement is required to digitally detect microdots before the technology can be implemented at scale in the mining industry.

Comminution is a critical stage of mineral processing which aims to reduce the size of ore particles through breakage, consequently increasing the likelihood of liberation of valuable minerals. Several factors, such as pre-existing cracks, mineralogical composition and particle size, are known to affect ore breakage behaviour. While investigating the contributing role of each factor is essential to improve understanding of breakage, isolating individual factors by experiment is typically impractical. Numerical techniques such as the Bonded Particle Model-Discrete Element Method (BPM-DEM) have been developed as a means of studying closely controlled breakage conditions. This study evaluates this technique in modelling the effect of pre-existing cracks breakage behaviour for synthetic ore specimens during impact breakage in a short impact load cell (SILC). Synthetic ore was modelled as a collection of discrete entities connected by brittle-elastic beams. Model parameters were calibrated against macroscopic material properties of a conventional homogenous synthetic ore. The extent of pre-existing cracks within specimens was prescribed by varying discontinuities between the connecting entities. An approach with the insertion of seed points was used to model the mineralogy of the specimens. Results showed that pre-existing cracks resulted in a decrease in the fracture force as the crack density increased. Additionally, the irregularity of fracture patterns within rock specimens after impact became more apparent as the crack density increased. The findings were used to emphasise some of the attributable causes of the variation observed between ore hardness characterisation tests and in situ ore behaviour. ABSTRACT: The Berg Bock Freeway Tunnel represents the southernmost link of the "Thuringian tunnel chain" of the new freeway A71 located in the eastern part of Germany. It comprises two tubes each 2700 m in length. From north to south, it passes through the Suhl granite, the base sediments and the porphyrite of the New Red as well as the layers of the Middle Bunter. The two tunnel tubes were driven by the shotcrete method within appr. 10 months. With four tunnel faces, maximum performances totalling appr. 30 m/d were attained. Additional, supplementary demands on the safety conception, resulting from the findings from and the analysis of fire accidents in tunnels in recent years, had to be fulfilled in the execution planning at short notice. The inner lining is largely constructed using non-reinforced concrete. Reinforcement is only installed in the portal zones, in tunnel sections in less stable rock and in areas with a special cross-section as for instance cross connections and niches. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Autobahntunnel Berg Bock stellt das südlichste Glied der "Thüringer Tunnelkette" auf der Autobahn A71 dar, die im Osten von Deutschland liegt. Er besteht aus zwei Röhren von je 2700 m Länge. Vom Norden nach Süden durchörtert er den Suhler Granit, die Basissedimente und den Porphyrit des Rotliegenden, sowie die Schichten des Mittleren Buntsandsteins. Die beiden Tunnelröhren wurden in Spritzbetonbauweise in einer Bauzeit von etwa zehn Monaten aufgefahren. An vier Vortriebsorten wurden Spitzenleistungen von insgesamt etwa 30 m/d erzielt. Ergänzende Anforderungen an das Sicherheitskonzept, die sich auf der Grundlage der Auswertung der in den letzten Jahren aufgetretenen Brandunfälle in Tunneln ergeben haben, wurden im Rahmen der Ausführungsplanung kurzfristig berücksichtigt. Die Tunnelinnenschale wurde weitgehend aus nicht bewehrtem Beton hergestellt. Nur in den Portalzonen, in Tunnelabschnitten mit weniger standsicherem Fels und in Bereichen mit speziellen Querschnitten, wie beispielsweise im Bereich von Querstollen und Nischen, wurde bewehrter Beton ausgeführt. RÉSUMÉ: Le tunnel d'autoroute de Berg Bock représente le plus méridional maillon de la "chaîne thuringienne de tunnels" sur l'autoroute A71 dans l'est de l'Allemagne. Il se compose de deux tubes d'une longueur de 2700 m chacun. Du nord vers le sud, il traverse le granit de Suhl, les sédiments de base et le porphyrite du Rotliegendes, aussi que les strates du grès bigarré intermédiaire. Les deux tubes étaient creusés en méthode de construction de béton projeté dans une période de construction d'environ dix mois. À quatre fronts de taille rendements maximaux collectifs d'environ 30 m par jour étaient obtenus. On a eu égard à court terme dans la conception d'exécution à des demandes supplémentaires vers la conception de sécurité, qui ont résulté sur la base de l'interprétation des accidents d'incendie dans des tunnels dans les années dernières. La paroi intérieure était construite largement de béton non armé.

The Alusaf aluminium smelter at Richards Bay by H. T. KAISER, B.Sc. (Pta), M.B.L. (Unisa) (Visitor) and P. DE WAAL, B.Sc., B.lng. (Mech.) (Stell.) (Visitor) A description is given of the aluminium smelter at Richards Bay, which operates on the Hall-Heroult electrolysis principle. The annual output of metal (average 99,7 per cent aluminium) is approximately 7S 000 tons. Since its commissioning in 1971, the plant has fulfilled South Africa's total demand for low-alloy rolling slabs, extrusion billets, remelt ingots, and electrical conductor rod. The plant layout allows for sufficient expansion of its capacity to meet longterm increases in demand.

The impoved densification of sludge from neutralized acid mine drainage. by D. J. BOSMAN, B.Sc., (Member) The paper describes an investigation aimed at finding a solution to the accumulation of acid mine drainage in the old workings at Coronation Collieries, Kromdraai. The problem involved the neutralization of the acid in the water, without the large volumes of sludge and the large amounts of dissolved solids that usually result from neutralization. Pilot-plant work on the site using a limeneutralization process developed at Bethlehem Steel Corporation (U.S.A.) showed this to be a feasible method. A sludge of 22 per cent density was obtained under optimum operating parameters. The amount of suspended solids in the overflow water was very high, but this does not give rise to concern because the full-scale plant at Kromdraai will practise secondary sedimentation by running the thickener overflow through large dams with a theoretical retention time of 25 days. An analysis of the theory underlying the process is also made.

Some aspects of the mechanical behaviour of chromium-containing dual-phase 3CR12 steel were investigated as a function of the temperature and strain rate. The yield stress was found to depend on both the temperature and the strain rate, with no substantial differences between the longitudinal and the transverse directions. The strain-rate sensitivity decreased with increasing temperature. The yield stress could be presented as a function of a temperature-strain-rate parameter. Impact test results showed substantial differences between the energy absorption of the transverse and longitudinal specimens above the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Changes in energy absorption with temperature were gradual for specimens in both orientations, and the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour occurred between 373 and 173 K. Strain rates ahead of the tip of notches with different geometries were calculated and measured experimentally.

It is generally recognized that a large proportion of the gold remaining in the residues from metallurgical plants on the Witwatersrand is occluded in pyrite. The conventional flotation-roasting process typically recovers approximately 40 per cent of this gold. The process described here is an unconventional route involving bacterial oxidation, which can achieve a gold recovery of approximately80 per cent. The paper describes tests carried out in the laboratory, as well as on a slimes dam. The results show that recovery of gold can be noticeably enhanced through the use of bacteria under conditions of controlled pH, moisture, and aeration. Biological oxidation of the pyrite releases the occluded gold, which then becomes amenable cyanidation.

The sixth underground pumped powerhouse cavern is under construction now in Korea. For the stability analysis of the five underground powerhouses, finite element method was used. For this analysis, in-situ rock stresses were measured by overcoring method and horizontal to vertical stress ratio was calculated 1.07-1.32 at four sites. Rock mass strength and elasticity were assumed from intact rock properties. The ratio of elasticity of rock mass was 0.16-0.55 of intact rock core elasticity. In general, elasto-plasticity with Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was applied and the input cohesion and internal friction angle were approximately 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 of intact rock strength parameters, respectively. Der sechste Untergrund-gepumpt-Powerhouse-Cavern ist jetzt im Bau in Korea. Für die vergan-gene Stabilitätsanalyse des fünf unterirdischen Powerhouses in Gebrauch wurde ein begrenztess Elementsmethode benutzt. Für die Analyse wurden In-Situ Felsenspannungen von overcoring Methode gemessen und Horizontale zu senkrechtem Spannungsverhältnis waren als 1.07-1.32 an vier Stellen kalkuliert. L'intensite et l'elasticite de la masse de roche ont ete estimees de la roche intacte. Quant a l'elastic-ite, sa masse de roche etait 0.16-0.55 fois que celle de la roche intacte. En general, elasto-plasticite avec le critere de defaut Mohr-Coulomb etait utilisee et sa cohesion d'energie et son angle de friction interieure etaient supposees respectivement 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 fois que la parametre de l'intensite de roche intacte.

Reduced downtime and maximized availability of mining machines are the key factors in optimizing production rates. As technology moves industry towards an age of ?intelligent machines? it sets the foundation for change in mining equipment design, functionality, and maintenance. Recent mining machine designs are integrating more and more electronic components into the core functionality of individual piece of equipment due to regulatory and legislative requirements, such as TIER rating, as well as from a safety aspect such as personal detection systems. This paper describes the use of existing on-board electronic equipment to increase machine availability through automated maintenance planning and diagnostic fault-finding capability. The automated maintenance planning takes place on the machine itself in order to be independent of the mine?s infrastructure, while the diagnostic capabilities allow for reduced downtime. The paper also presents a concept to transfer operational data to surface to be able to optimize planning of maintenance and to reduce downtime. Case studies are presented where such systems have been commissioned and are currently in operation, the possibilities of this technology application for the future are examined.

In the chlorination process for TiO2 pigment production, blends of titania feedstocks such as ilmenite, synthetic rutile (SR), natural rutile, upgraded slag, and chloride-grade slag are reacted with coke and chlorine at a temperature of around 1000°C to form TiCl4, which is the main product, and other waste metal chlorides. TiCl4 is the main feed material for the TiO2 pigment-making process. Feeding different titania materials to the chlorinator affects the amounts of coke and chlorine required for the process, the amount of waste generated, waste disposal costs, the amount of TiCl4 produced, and bed build-up rates. These factors influence the value of the feedstock. Generally, a higher TiO2 feedstock is more valued since less waste is generated and less reagents are consumed. To quantify the impact of different feedstocks on the chlorinator, a techno-economic model was developed to describe the chlorination process and estimate process variables at steady state. This paper describes the development of the model and studies in which the model has been used to quantify the effects of using different feedstocks.

Recovered activated carbon fines result from processing of ore and concentrates via cyanide leaching and sorption of valuable metals on carbon at gold-mining plants. This intermediate product is characterised by the particles sized smaller than 0.6 mm and gold grade up to 300-500 g/t. Processing of carbon fines with recovery of valuable metals is not available at many plants due to the lack of optimal technology. The paper describes the testwork and development of an efficient technology to process carbon fines with the recovery of valuable metals into the target gold alloy. This innovative technology involves pelletising of fine activated carbon particles using an organic binder, drying and further firing of pellets in a grate fired furnace at 800-900 °С. The produced ash is subject to sintering with sodium nitrate and hydroxide at 600-700°С. The sintered ash is then leached in water. The insoluble residue containing gold and silver is removed by filtration, dried and smelted to produce gold alloy. Water solution containing sulphur and arsenic is subject to detoxification. Processing of recovered carbon fines according to the developed technology implies the use of standard full-scale equipment. The offered method to treat gold-bearing carbon fines was patented by the Eurasian Patent Office.
