Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterised by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25 %-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18 %-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating cost, offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously de-bottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. Mining operations are generally reluctant to install high-cost sampling systems at operations that have been functioning for many years. The principal objection to installing appropriate equipment to extract correct and representative samples in process flows is the time and costs involved. The Theory of Sampling (TOS) provides a structured framework for identifying and quantifying the errors and bias associated with any sampling event, but this may be insufficient to initiate substantial investment in correctly designed sampling equipment. Financial losses arising from substandard sampling installations are usually disregarded because the value-add from a good quality sampling solution is invisible, but the cost is quite obvious. Depending on the needs, a less-than-perfect or fit-for-purpose sampling solution may be acceptable, provided the magnitude of sampling errors is understood and the assay results are interpreted accordingly. Categorical levels of acceptable accuracy and precision can be established depending on the sampling position in the mining value chain and the nature of the decisions to be made. The objective benefits of proposed fit-for-purpose sampling solutions should be presented to relevant decision-makers in such a way that adverse subjective decisions are countered so that appropriate solutions are implemented. Practical examples of the benefits from motivating the implementation of fit for purpose sampling solutions at sampling facilities around the world are provided.

Uncertainties in the forecasting of the volume of groundwater likely to enter underground workings present difficulties for mine management in planning and costing the water-related activities of mining. This paper describes a technique that was developed to assess future inflows into a gold mine in the Orange Free State. The approach employed was based on the interactive operation of two separate computer models: a regional-flow model and an inflow model. As a first stage, a regional finite-element model of groundwater flow was set up and calibrated. Predictive runs were made to establish the influence of mining on the water levels from base-line conditions. This step was necessary since observations of the regional water levels were sparse. The predicted water levels were transferred to the inflow model, and the future flowrates were calculated. Both models were calibrated by trial and error until a satisfactory match was obtained between historical records and the values predicted by modeling. In this way, an improved monitoring system to record regional water levels and pressure heads within a mine was established. By the use of information, the initial model predictions can be refined as mining progresses. The models used are based on a non-linear relationship between the area mined and the inflows. A phased behaviour in the rates of inflow increase was noted. In conclusion, the modeling approach can provide mine management with guidelines for dewatering requirements. The confidence levels depend upon the records that have been collected during the mine's history.

In this research, in order to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV)(as vibration indicator) caused by blasting projects in the excavations of the Karoun III power plant and dam, three techniques including statistical, empirical, and neural network were used and their results were interpreted and compared. First, multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) was used as statistical approach. Next, PPV was predicted using some widely used empirical models. Lastly, an artificial neural network was used. In the ANN model, maximum charge per delay, total charge per round, distance from blast site, direction of firing, blasthole length, number of blastholes, total delay in milliseconds, number of delay intervals, and average specific charge were taken into consideration as input parameters and consequently the PPV as output parameter. The results of the techniques were interpreted from two points of view. Firstly, the correlation between the observed data and predicted ones, secondly the total error between observed data and predicted ones. The MVRA had a satisfactory correlation but its error of estimation was comparatively very high. The empirical model had reliable correlation and a small error of estimation; in total the results of empirical method were more reliable than those of MVRA. Generally, the ANN approach showed very high correlation and a very small error. The results of this research indicated that the ANN model is the best predicting model for PPV in comparison with other approaches.

This paper addresses the challenge to define a concept of entropy (state of order) for a textured particle system. Both the particle texture, the intergrowth respectively, and the particle size influence the order of a particle system. The smaller the particles become, the more particles form the solid system and the more permutations of the structure of the particle bed are possible. The texture within a particle is fixed, as long as it is not subjected to changes due to comminution, flocculation or agglomeration. The paper will present a definition of entropy, which is able to reflect qualitatively and quantitatively the intergrowth and the size (distribution) of the particles. Theoretical examples will show how different breakage mechanisms can be identified using the entropy definition. The objective of this paper was to investigate the possibility of reducing process (fresh) water and increasing recycled water (thickener tank overflow water). As part of the investigation, rougher flotation tests were done with the two water types and a mixture of the two (50%/50%). The effect of recycled water on the grade-recovery response and rougher recoveries was investigated. When thickener tank overflow was used (50% and 100%), the nickel+copper grade versus nickel recovery decreased. The decrease in the grade-recovery was due to higher pyrrhotite recovery. Also, there were no effects on nickel and copper recoveries, which was confirmed using multivariate statistical analysis at the 95% significance level. "The modes of occurrence of arsenic and the effects of low-intensity leaching-flotation on arsenic removal from coal slime from the Tanggongta Plant, Inner Mongolia, China were investigated. The coal slime was examined using hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and X-ray diffraction to obtain the content of elements and the major minerals. The modes of occurrence of arsenic in minerals were determined using selective leaching, float-and-sink analysis, and polarized light microscopy. The results indicate that pyrite is the dominant carrier of arsenic in the coal slime, which predominantly exists in association with clay. Significant proportion of the arsenic is removed by a low-intensity leaching-flotation process, consistent with the data from selective leaching and flotation of gangue. The results show that low intensity leaching-alkali washing-flotation is more efficient than direct flotation and low-intensity leaching-flotation.IntroductionUnderstanding the occurrence of arsenic in coal and its removal is significant in optimizing coal utilization, because arsenic in the environment is viewed as a potentially toxic trace element (Finkelman, Belkin, and Zhang, 1999; Hall, 2002; Smith et al., 1992; Smedley et al., 2003; Zheng et al., 1999). Many studies on the modes of occurrence and concentration trends of arsenic in different coal and washing products have been performed (Diehl, Goldhaber, and Hatch, 2004; Kolker et al., 2000; Quick and Irons, 2002; Wang et al., 2006; Fan et al., 2016). Trace elements are usually preferentially associated with certain minerals and the form that these minerals take will influence the efficiency of removal during cleaning (Quick and Irons, 2002). Arsenic is mainly associated with minerals such as pyrite, carbonate, and silicate (Demir et al., 1998; Diehl, Goldhaber, and Hatch, 2004; Zhou et al., 2014). The existence of organically bound arsenic was also confirmed using X-ray absorption (Kolker et al., 2000). However, inorganic arsenic is the principal source of pollution because of its leachability and high concentration compared with organic arsenic (Fujino et al., 2004; Gao, Lu, and Wang, 2010; Jiang et al., 2008; Kolker et al., 2000)."

Waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are a metals-rich fraction of electronic waste (e-waste) streams, and globally it has been demonstrated that they can be recycled gainfully to recover the metals. Reported successful cases of PCB recycling are carried out in large volumes, using high-level technology and high capital investment smelter house operations. This presents entry barriers for recyclers in developing economies where capital may not be accessible, and the waste volumes are not sufficient to warrant large scale operations. Hydrometallurgical processes have the potential to provide an option for the scalable processing of smaller volumes of PCBs and can be set up at relatively lower capital costs. However, to date, the hydrometallurgical treatment options available rely on precursor communition and classification processes that also require high capital and energy costs. This paper presents an overview of the work done under the Minerals to Metals signature theme towards understanding e-waste recycling processes and developing pre-processing and characterisation of PCBs in order to unlock potential for local end processing in developing economies, using South Africa as a case study. The structure of PCBs is reviewed, and the current size reduction techniques and the subsequent leaching processes are discussed. In this study, a newly developed plaster stemming method is studied and compared with the usual dry drill cuttings stemming method for surface blasting in mines and quarries. Drill cuttings are generally used in open pits and quarries as the most common stemming material since these are most readily available at blast sites. However, dry drill cuttings eject very easily from blastholes without offering much resistance to blast energy. The plaster stemming method has been found to be better than the drill cuttings stemming method due to increased confinement inside the hole and better utilization of blast explosive energy in the rock. The main advantage of the new stemming method is the reduction in the cost of blasting. In one series of blast tests, blasting costs per unit volume of rock were reduced to 16 per cent by increasing burden and spacing distances. Also, better fragmentation was obtained by using the plaster stemming method. Blast trials showed that plaster stemming produced finer material. In the same blast tests, +30 cm size fragments reduced to 5.4 per cent of the total, compared to 37.7 per cent in the conventional method of drill cuttings stemming. With this method of stemming, vibration and air shock values increased slightly due to more blast energy being available for rock breakage, but these increased values were small and under the permitted limit for blast damage criteria.

"SynopsisSilicon carbide nanopowders were produced using a microwave-induced plasma process operating at 15 kPa absolute and at atmospheric pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) served as precursor, due to its advantageous stoichiometric silicon-to-carbon ratio of unity, allowing it to act as both carbon and silicon source. Argon served as carrier gas, and an additional hydrogen feed helped ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. The parameters under investigation were the H2:MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy. The particle size distribution ranged from 20 nm upwards, as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H2:MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. The adhesion of particles was a common occurrence during the process, resulting in larger agglomerate sizes. SiC layers were deposited at 15 kPa with thicknesses ranging from 5.8 to 15 µm.IntroductionIt is well known that methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3 or MTS) decomposes to form silicon carbide (SiC) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) as shown in Equation [1]. The magnesia-carbon refractories used in the ConArc process experience severe wear as a result of the varying slag composition during the blowing phase. This work determines the basicity range in which minimum as well as maximum refractory wear was experienced by the magnesia-carbon refractories during service. In order to determine an optimum slag composition, the crucible test in an induction furnace was used. The magnesia-carbon refractory bricks were cut into cylindrical crucibles to which a synthetic slag in the form of pellets was added. The basicity (B2) of the slag was varied from 0.5 to 3. Tests were done at 1 600°C for one hour. Apart from the crucible test in an induction furnace, visual inspection and SEM analysis were also done to investigate the corrosion mechanism. FACTSage® predictions about the interaction between refractories and slag were also done. These predictions were compared to the actual results attained. It was found that the extent of corrosion by slag attack decreases as the basicity increases. The most severe corrosion of the MgO-C refractories occurred at a basicity of 0.5 whereas the optimum basicity is above 2.0. SEM analysis indicated severe slag attack at the lower basicities with no visible refractory-slag interaction at higher basicities. TheFACTSage® predictions supported most of the actual findings. This paper explores how to apply system dynamics principles to surface mining problems towards understanding the consequences of mining efficiencies. Some simulation examples related to machine and people performance have been used to demonstrate systems engineering concepts to mining engineers. The simulation tool used is Vensim, which is widely used in industrial engineering applicable to systems thinking, and systems dynamics. The science and mathematics behind the system dynamics as well as benefits and typical challenges are discussed to explore the applicability to mining problems. The benefit of having one less drill is easily quantifiable with the developed model which is one of many other measurable benefits, using the developed model. Some of the benefits of the improved quality of drill holes are not fully quantified as this depends on the mine specific inputs. There are examples of quantifying this in the other industries using system dynamics tools.

"The copper smelting industry faces increasingly stringent environmental regulations and must continue driving innovation to reduce energy usage in its production chain. With the coming of age of ‘bottom-blowing’ copper technologies in China over the last decade, much renewed attention has been brought to tuyere bath smelting for clean copper-making. Since bottom-blowing sonic injection was originally developed and implemented in steelmaking in the 1970s and lead smelting in the 1990s, the time seems appropriate to revisit the sonic injection concepts and dispel some myths. After reviewing the trends in the copper industry and providing a brief historical context of research and development related to sonic injection, the author presents a comparison of the main submerged tuyere bath smelting technologies, namely the Noranda Reactor (NR), the Teniente Converter (TC), and the Chinese Bottom-Blowing Smelting Furnace (SKS/BBS) for copper, and the Queneau-Schuhmann-Lurgi Reactor (QSL) for lead. The core of this article, however, consists of a brief description of the fundamental theories for sonic injection (jetting regime) and ‘sonic flow mapping’ to illustrate the relationship between the minimum tuyere back-pressure required to achieve sonic flow and the tuyere internal diameter. The article also offers a comparison between side- and bottom-blowing in jetting regime before concluding with the author’s vision of the new trend in submerged tuyere bath smelting. IntroductionIn the last decade, developments in the copper smelting industry have been driven by two key concepts: (1) increasing cleaner smelting capacity to meet the world’s growing copper demand, as illustrated in Figure 1, and (2) increasing process off-gas capture to comply with more stringent environmental regulations and abide by a corporate social responsibility ethic of a clean work environment (for smelter employees) and clean air (for families living around smelters). The copper smelting industry has also faced some major challenges in the last few decades, including (1) low treatment and refining charges (TC/RC or processing fees) impacting custom smelters, (2) lower concentrate quality and grades with higher levels of impurities (e.g. As and Hg), (3) higher processing and transportation costs due to the rising cost of energy, (4) restrictions in process intensification (tonnage oxygen usage) due to furnace integrity limits, and (5) scarcity of educated and trained personnel due to fewer metallurgists graduating from pyrometallurgical school programmes combined with a high retirement rate of skilled workers."

A willemite concentrate consisting mainly of willemite (55.3%) and dolomite (15.6%) was reduced in a tube furnace with charcoal as reductant. The effects of temperature and varying reductant additions on zinc extraction were studied. A zinc recovery of 86% was achieved with 20% reductant in the charge at 1100°C. During reduction, the calcium oxide generated through calcination of the dolomite promoted decomposition of the willemite, thus lowering the temperature at which reduction took place. The presence of CaO improved the zinc recovery at all temperatures studied. The best zinc recovery (93%) was obtained in the presence of 5% CaO, 20% charcoal reductant, and at a temperature of 1100°C. The results show that the willemite concentrate studied has great potential to be used as a raw material for the Waelz process.

A mechanistic description of axial segregation in rotating drum flows remains an open question. Consequently, optimal mixing of grinding balls and rocks for efficient breakage, maximum production of fines, and slurry transport is seldom achieved. Experimental and numerical studies of granular mixtures in rotating drums identify alternating axial bands that eventually coarsen in the long-term limit. Most models of axial segregation are limited to binary mixtures and cannot always predict the logarithmic coarsening effects observed experimentally. A key missing factor is a robust description of the axial free surface profile that is valid across a wide range of flow regimes. We present a practical model of the axial free surface profile by linking it to readily-derived geometric features of the cross-sectional S-shaped free surface profile. A parametric study shows good agreement with experimental measurements reported in the literature and heuristically valid trends.

[ ] Great Basin Gold Ltd. (GBG) owns the Hollister Mine and operates it through the wholly owned subsidiary Rodeo Creek Gold, Inc. The property is located in northern Nevada on the Carlin Trend gold belt within the historic Ivanhoe Mining District. The mine is located on the western edge of the Northern Nevada Rift, a major north-northwest trending structural zone that has localized middle Miocene volcanic rocks and numerous epithermal gold deposits. The precious metal deposits are low-sulfidation epithermal systems characterized by banded quartz veins with electrum and silver selenides. The Hollister Mine will employ the selective underground mining method of cut and fill. This will be combined with split shooting (resuing mining method) to optimize recovery and reduce dilution. The focus of mining will be on extraction of ?ounces? from the narrow-veins rather than trying to maximize tons. The initial drifts will be excavated along the strike of the vein and then capped with a substantial concrete sill pillar. Back stoping with hand held drills will be used to selectively mine the vein. The stopes will be backfilled with waste rock material. With every lift, an 18 inch concrete cap will be poured onto the backfill waste rock to prevent gold values from being lost into the fill. Targeted ore production rate will be over 400 tons per day. With current ore reserves, project life is estimated to be around eight years; however, Hollister geologists view the site as one of the most prospective systems for bonanza vein deposits in Nevada. Optimization of panels, haulage fleet, and waiting area involves deterministic and low-fidelity methods and experiential knowledge. The process is challenging because coal recovery and operational capabilities must be considered in the solution. The approach in this manuscript comprises the development of an integrated stochastic simulation model of a coal room-and-pillar system that addresses these challenges. The decision variables evaluated are panel width, number of shuttle cars, and change-out time (COT). The results show that the mine should implement the shortest possible COT, decreasing the cycle time and thereby increasing productivity and continuous miner (CM) utilization. The highest productivity and CM utilization for a fleet size of three shuttle cars is found in the 15-entry panel width. For the evaluated fleet sizes, the 19-entry panel width is optimal for the four and five shuttle cars. Among the three variables studied, panel width and fleet size had the most significant effects (5% increase) on the CM productivity, cycle time, and utilization.
