INTERNATIONAL SOLVENT EXTRACTION CONFERENCE, 1971 The Society of Chemical Industry has agreed to sponsor an International Conference devoted to the science and technology of solvent extraction. This will be held in The Hague in the Netherlands during the week commencing 19th April, 1971. The organisation of the Conference will be in the hands of a Conference Committee under the chairmanship of Mr B. F. Warner. The emphasis of the Conference will be on technical solvent extraction of both inorganic and organic substances, including basic principles and practical applications. Sessions are envisaged covering the chemistry of solvent extraction, industrial processes and economics, the performance of contacting equipment and the underlying phenomena involved, and the response characteristics and control of such units. The Conference Committee will welcome offers of papers for presentation at the Conference. In the firts instance, intending authors should submit a preliminary title and an indication of the scope of their contribution to the Conference Secretary: Dr. C. Hanson, University of Bradford 7, U.K. It is hoped to have available in September a first circular giving further details of the Conference. SOUTH AFRICAN TUNNELLING CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN 1970 A South African Tunnelling Conference, to be known as TUNCON 70, is to be held in Johannesburg during the latter half of July, 1970. South Africa, in common with other countries, has a vital and growing interest in tunnelling. Apart from the 800 kilometres of tunnel excavated annually in the gold mines, the 82 kilometre-long Orange-Fish Tunnel is being driven to carry water from the Orange River to the drier areas of the Eastern Cape Province. This and the realization that services such as water and transport are increasingly being carried underground in various parts of the world have emphasized the need for a forum at which the technology and potential of tunnelling can be discussed. TUNCON 70 is being supported by three professional engineering societies representing some 6,000 engineers, namely, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the South African Institute of Civil Engineers and the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineers, as well as by the Geological Society of South Africa. The conference has three main purposes. Firstly, to pool and exchange expertise by authorities on tunnelling; secondly, to discuss future developments in tunnelling technology with the aim of making those concerned with long-term planning aware of the potentialities of tunnelling; thirdly, to propose standards for tunnel shapes and sizes. Adoption of standards for tunnelling equipment and accessories would be a major step forward in improving tunnelling efficiency. The five themes of the conference will be: tunnel utilisation, exploration, design, construction and standards. The conference will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, from 21st to 24th July, 1970. SYNOPSIS The effect of conditioning energy on the flotation of gold, U308, and pyrite was investigated in the range 0,1 to 100 kWh per tonne of dry ore for various combinations of conditioning time and impeller speed in a cylindrical con¬ditioning tank. It was found that, when the conditioning energy was increased to between 5 and 10 kWh per tonne of dry ore, the total recovery and flotation rate of the valuable minerals (expressed as Klimpel parameters) increas¬ed substantially. The Klimpel parameters are dependent on conditioning energy, but are independent of condition¬ing time or impeller speed (at constant conditioning energy). The Klimpel parameters of the gangue are indepen¬dent of conditioning energy.

Labour-intensive narrow reef stoping, as traditionally practised in South African gold and platinum mines, is almost unique in the modern first-world mechanized mining environment. Shortcomings of the system include the ever increasing cost of labour, a cap on achievable productivity and a poor safety record, particularly in the field of rock-related accidents. In the absence of sustainable alternative technologies, the South African mining industry has spent millions of rands improving the present system, focusing on improving workplace safety. This paper details the changes to stope support at Impala Platinum?s Rustenburg operations, and the impact on rock-related safety performance. Teck Metals Ltd operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Since 1997, KIVCETTM flash smelting technology has been utilized for the treatment of zinc plant residues and lead concentrates. Trail Operations’ furnace uses four water-cooled jackets for bullion tapping. This paper provides an overview of KIVCET bullion tapping for the past 16 years, and discusses successes and challenges encountered with respect to operations, training, and monitoring.

Pyrometallurgical smelters utilise tap-holes, through which liquid metal, matte and/or slag are tapped at regular intervals. However, tap-hole failures can have a devastating impact on smelters, which includes loss of equipment, human life and business interruptions. Contributing factors to tap-hole failures include poor and/or incorrect refractory material selection, including tap-hole clays. The functions of tap-hole clays in smelters include their ability to be extruded and drilled with ease at the end and beginning of a tap, and their ability to resist chemical wear due to molten metal and slag during tapping. Mintek is currently developing methods of evaluating properties of tap-hole clays with a specific focus on workability, and wear mechanisms of clays due to ferrochrome alloy and slag. Of particular interest to this study was the characterisation of various tap-hole clays. This paper evaluates the chemical and phase chemical properties of three different tap-hole clays. The bulk chemical composition of the tap-hole clays was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, proximate analyses and combustion methods. The bulk phase compositions and specific phase chemical compositions were studied using quantitative X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and electron probe microanalyses techniques. The Technical Programme Committee-Metals Technology of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, in association with its Vaal Triangle Branch, held a one-day colloquium on 18th April, 1989, the theme being 'Ferous Pyrometalurgy: A Challenge for South Africa'. The venue was the Auditorium 100 at the campus of the Vaal Triangle Technikon in Vanderbijlpark. Project and contract management A Project and Contract Management Conference is to be held on 19th and 20th September, 1989, at the C SIR, Pretoria. Powder metallurgy The PM 90 exhibition is to be held in Wembley, London, from 2nd to 6th July, 1990. The wide range of powders, processing machinery, and powder-metallurgy components at the exhibition will reflect the growth in this highly specialist industry. Castings and forgings Exhibition organizers, FMJ International Publications Ltd, are set to build upon the success of Castings & Forgings '88, which was held as a joint event with Pat- Cast '88. Castings & Forgings '89-with Pat-Cast '89- has already generated a high level of interest, which has been reflected in the demand for stands. "Excavation of an industrial-scale submerged arc furnace, utilized in the production of silicomanganese, identified two high-wear areas in the refractory lining: the tap-hole, built with cold rammed carbon paste and SiC bricks, and the hearth, built with cold rammed carbon paste. To obtain insight into the potential causes of wear, thermodynamic calculations were conducted on eight sets of data, obtained for seven furnaces on three plants based in South Africa. FACTsage software and associated databases – FACTPS, FToxid, and FSstel – as well as the Mn-Fe-Si-C database of Tang and Olsen (2006), were applied. Theoretical indications are that chemical reaction between carbon refractory and slag, as well as dissolution of carbon and SiC refractory in metal, contributed to tap-hole refractory wear; and dissolution of carbon in metal contributed to hearth refractory wear. IntroductionDuring the excavation of a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace (SAF) used for silicomanganese (SiMn) production, it was found that the taphole and hearth were high refractory wear areas (Steenkamp, 2014). In both these highwear areas, carbon-based cold ramming paste formed the hot face refractory lining (crucible). The wear profile of this SAF is presented in Figure 1.The hot face refractory lining was formed by cold ramming of high-grade carbon ramming material. This material consisted of 50–70% anthracite, 15–25% graphite, 6–12% resin, 2–7% tar, 1–5% clay, and 1–5% alumina. The tap-hole was built using SiC bricks, consisting of 75% SiC, 23.4% Si3N4, 0.3% Fe2O3, 0.3% Al2O3, and 0.2% CaO.In the tap-hole area, the wear of the SiC refractory material was estimated at 0.4 t, and that of the high-grade carbon ramming material, at 1.9 t (Steenkamp, Pistorius, and Tangstad, 2015). The amounts of slag and metal tapped during six years of operation of the tap-hole (September 2007 to April 2013) were estimated at 33 088 t (Steenkamp et al.,2015) and 41 360 t, respectively."

"Multiple-point simulation (MPS) methods have been developed over the last decade as a means of reproducing complex geological patterns while generating stochastic simulations. Some geological spatial configurations are complex, such as the spatial geometries and patterns of diamondbearing kimberlite pipes and their internal facies controlling diamond quality and distribution.Two MPS methods were tested for modelling the geology of a diamond pipe located at the Ekati mine, NT, Canada. These are the single normal equation simulation algorithm SNESIM, which captures different patterns from a training image (TI), and the filter simulation algorithm FILTERSIM, which classifies the patterns founded on the TI. Both methods were tested in the stochastic simulation of a four-category geology model: crater, diatreme, xenoliths, and host rock. Soft information about the location of host rock was also used. The validation of the simulation results shows a reasonable reproduction of the geometry and data proportions for all geological units considered; the validation of spatial statistics, however, shows that although simulated realizations from both methods reasonably reproduce the fourth-order spatial statistics of the TI, they do not reproduce well the same spatial statistics of the available data (when this differs from the TI). An interesting observation is that SNESIM better imitated the shape of the pipe, while FILTERSIM yielded a better reproduction of the xenolith bodies. IntroductionThe simulation of geological units poses several technical problems that challenge the capabilities of available geostatistical simulation approaches and their ability to deal with spatial complexity of categorical variables. The spatial geometry of diamondbearing pipes and their internal facies controlling diamond distributions are a specific and well-known difficult modelling problem. The geometry of a kimberlite pipe is typically like an inverted cone (Figure 1); the wider part is known as the crater and is located near the surface, and the narrower, deeper part is known as the diatreme. Xenolith bodies can also be found inside the pipe. A very important contribution to the geological modelling of the contours of the pipe is the measure of uncertainty about the location of the contact between the kimberlite pipe and the host rock."

A new methodology is proposed for the preliminary assessment of coal blend quality, which combines gamma-ray spectrometry and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This methodology does not replacethe conventional methods of assessing coal quality, but can help to control the quality of the coal blending process, as well as reduce the amount of proximate analysis required and the determinations of calorific value and total sulphur. The methodology includes five steps. First, both geophysical measurements aremade with handheld equipment. The samples with magnetic susceptibility ≤ 1 × 10-3 SI are then separated. From these samples, those with total gamma intensity ≤ 20 nGy/h are separated. These samples have a higher calorific value and lower ash and moisture content. To separate the samples of better quality and with lower total sulphur content, in step four the samples with total gamma intensity > 20 nGy/h are separated from those with magnetic susceptibility ≤ 1 × 10-3 SI. This last group includes samplesthat will cause less total sulphur-related environmental pollution. In the final step, the quality of both radioactive sample groups is corroborated from the calorific value measurement and ash, moisture, andtotal sulphur contents in at least 10% of all coal blend samples from both groups. In this study, more than1000 samples were analysed with this new methodology, and the results are remarkably similar to the ASTM classification of the Sabinas Basin coals.

"Bench-scale flotation tests play a major role in the geometallurgical process value chain. Despite their apparent simplicity, these tests pose pitfalls in terms of operation, as well as the interpretation and modelling of results. In this paper we highlight key aspects to consider in generating accurate and reproducible experimental results, and critically review some assumptions relating to the estimation of entrainment and froth recovery. We subsequently focus on first-order equations to model kinetics and propose a method that accounts more realistically for the decay in kinetics over the duration of a float, and the contributions of froth stability and hence mass pull. The method was applied to three case studies on platinum group metal (PGM) ores and matched or outperformed first-order, two-component models. Also, it allows for a deeper analysis of the integrity of the bench-scale flotation results. IntroductionGeometallurgy is a structured, multidisciplinary approach that integrates key data from the geological, mining, mineralogical, and metallurgical aspects of the value chain to construct spatial models of an ore deposit such that the overall economic benefit and sustainability of an operation can be optimized. Process geometallurgy is aimed primarily at enhancing metallurgical efficiency and plant throughput by the application of appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as supporting production planning and operational strategies to reduce the impact of highly variable ores. With flotation being the dominant concentrating process in the mineral value chain, the bench-scale flotation test is an important characterization tool – a relatively cheap, simple, and rapid way to obtain key information about the ore and its amenability to economic extraction of valuable minerals. This includes the evaluation of different ore types and the implications of mineralogical composition and texture for comminution and floatability, the effect of the grinding environment on the liberation of minerals, the electrochemical environment in the pulp (Bradshaw et al., 2006), the screening of reagents to improve floatability (Ekmekci et al., 2003), and the role of hydrodynamics in the recovery of valuables and the entrainment of gangue (Amini et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2016). It is also a critical tool in auditing the performance of a flotation plant by hot floats, paving the way for concept and feasibility studies and providing essential data on kinetics for the purposes of scale-up, optimization, and simulation of flotation circuits."

"SynopsisMining value chains are dynamic systems and should be managed according to systemic flow-based principles. This includes a detailed focus on the impact of variable geological conditions on material flow, product quality, and production cost, visibility of the total mining system to operators and managers, as well as the synchronization of resources and activities in downstream processes. Thirty mining operations across the African continent were studied to establish to what extent systemic flowbased principles are applied in day-to-day operations. The study indicated that although most mining operations have identified the relevant geoprocessing variables, only a small number apply this information in a flow-based management approach. Most mining operators do not focus on developing a clear flow view of the mining value chain and on making it visible to operators and managers to enable them to optimally set and reset operations. Daily synchronization of geoprocessing variables is limited to a small number of variables, e.g. synchronizing ore hardness with drilling or milling requirements, in less than 30% of the operations evaluated. Operations where these principles have been adopted reported a noteworthy improvement in performance. The study indicates that notable potential exists in most of the operations evaluated to implement flowbased management principles, including geometallurgical principles. This can significantly improve value chain performance without exorbitant capital layouts and enhance ROCE. IntroductionObjective of the studyThe study seeks to establish to what extent systemic flow-based principles have been adopted in the southern African mining industry and the implications thereof. Specific attention is given to the importance of defining and managing geoprocessing dependencies (geological variables directly impacting mining and plant performance – the geometallurgical approach), establishing a flow view of the mining system, which typically includes a dashboard of the flow of ore/product quality and cost from the mining face to the customer, and limiting the impact of dependencies through synchronization of activities and resources, e.g. ensuring that a continuous miner does not wait for a roofbolter, or that reagent addition rates are matched with a specific ore/concentrate composition."

This paper describes the engineering properties of Givi dam foundation. Givi dam will be built across the Givi River on the andesitic rocks (Karaj formation) in Ardabil province (northeast of Iran). Geotechnical investigations including drilling, pumping tests, sampling for laboratory testing and discontinuity survey. Physical and mechanical properties of andesitic rocks such as density, water absorption, porosity, uniaxial compressive strength, triaxial compressive strength, durability and direct shear tests are evaluated in this paper. Discontinuity data are process for the determination of dominant sets and for the rock mass characterization in terms of classification systems ( RMR, Q and RSR ). Correlations between these three classifications are discussed. Chromite beneficiation is generally performed by crushing and density separation using spirals. At the Dwarsrivier Chrome mine spiral efficiencies seam to vary, the reason for which is not evident. This sometimes results in the production of low-grade products, which are sold at relatively low prices. This paper represents a Qemscan® study that investigated mineralogical reasons for these variations. Variations in liberation of chromite particles as well as variations in chromite compositions were investigated. The results showed that the so-called low grade chromite product can be improved to become a high grade chromite product by means of a refinement in mineral processing. A detailed Qemscan® database (SIP file) was developed to account for variations in chromite chemistries. It can be shown that chemical variations with respect to Cr, Al, Mg and Fe in chromite particles reporting to the scavenger tails are larger than in the high grade product. A combination of these chemical variations together with a decrease in liberation of chromite particles in the scavenger tails can potentially help to recover more chromite particles from this specific process stream.

The conference was attended by traditional leaders in the North-West Province, officials from the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, and executives from the mining industry. The presentation concerned traditional governance in mining, communities? rights in terms of applicable legislation, and the corporatization of community affairs.

Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and the rate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

OBITUARY The President: "It is my sad duty to announce the death of Henrik Johannes Van Eck, Honorary Life Member, who joined the Institute in 1929 and passed away on 18th February, 1970. Dr van Eck started life as a chemist and chemical engineer and, as we all know, he rose to become one of our most distinguished leaders of industry in the country. On many important occasions we, in this Institute, have been privileged to have him address us on subjects which were always of great importance and relevance to the developments in this country. He was a man of great vision and imagination and could put across his ideas in a most eloquent and convincing manner. In his important position as chairman of the Industrial Development Corporation and of Iscor, whatever he said carried great weight. Busy as he was he always found time to participate not only in the affairs of this Institute but in many other technical and public bodies. His passing is a great loss to South Africa and we in this Institute wish to associate ourselves with the many other tributes which have been paid to this great man. We extend our sympathy to his wife and family and as a mark of respect I would ask you to rise and observe a few moments silence." PAPERS FOR PRESENTATION The President: (i) "Mr Lee, may I call on you to deliver your paper entitled 'A new bubble pick-up technique as a rapid flotation test method'." After the presentation of the paper the President said: "The paper which Mr Lee introduced this afternoon was a short one but was nonetheless important in that it described a new tool for use in flotation test work. Those of us who have experienced the frustration of trying to solve flotation problems by trial and error methods know what this means. I well remember 25 years ago at T.G.M.E. trying to improve the recovery from the flotation plant there by trying various combinations of reagents and then having to wait a couple of days for the assay office to give results. Even then, on the small scale laboratory tests which had to precede full scale tests one could never be sure that the results obtained were reproducible on the full scale. Here it seems we have a relatively simple apparatus which can measure instantly the effectiveness of various reagents under different concentrations and pH values, etc. It is most important, I believe, that developments of this kind be reported in our journal for the benefit of all involved in such work, not only so that we know about it but also in order to provoke constructive discussion which might lead to further developments. "The ventilation system of the Pyhasalmi Mine is described. The mine is located in an area where the annual atmospheric temperature may vary from +30°C to -30°C. Natural ventilation causes serious difficulties because the underground mine is connected by drifts and finger raises to the bottom of the 120 m-deep open pit.The natural ventilation tends to make the ventilation net unstable. The paper describes how the instability characteristics of the ventilation net can be studied and how they have been taken into account when automating the control of the ventilation. In addition, the software, hardware and costs of the system are described. The system consists of 12 automated ventilation doors, two mine fans, 8 elements for sensing the air flow and temperatures, a control panel and a process computer."

Recovery of precious metals from hydrochloric solution using sulfur-impregnated carbonaceous adsorbent was examined. Sulfur-impregnated adsorbent with adsorption abilities of precious metals can be prepared from activated carbon using pyrolysis at 600 oC under 10 % H2S gas flow, and the adsorbed Au and Pd were precipitated as metal phase on the surface of the adsorbent. The adsorbents after precious metals adsorption were burned at 700 oC to obtain the residue mainly containing precious metals. The adsorbent was found to be highly efficient and selective for the uptake of precious metals, especially Au, in the presence of excess base metal ions from simulated spent automotive catalyst eluted solution using a column pack test. This study investigates the effect of ammonium thiosulfate on the leaching of gold from the contacts of unpopulated cut electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs). Studies in the literature show ammonium thiosulfate to be a viable option in comparison to the commonly used but hazardous cyanide leaching route. However, the simultaneous dissolution of Cu interferes with the Au leaching reaction, often limiting the extraction to moderate levels. To optimize the system, an ammoniumthiosulfate system containing 0.5M ammonia, 0.5M ammonium thiosulfate, and Cu(II) sulfate at varying concentrations was studied as an alternative hydrometallurgical option for the recovery of gold from PCB. Tests were done with unpopulated standardized model PCBs (cut to 15 x 30mm pieces). Gold extraction of 47.3% was achieved after a 24-hour leaching experiment with a 0.02M copper background concentration. Further experiments focused using different initial background Cu concentrations (0M – 0.1M) to determine its effect on both gold and copper extractions. An initial Cu concentration of 0.045M resulted in the highest gold extraction, with 93.7% extraction after 6 hours of leaching. Further analysis of the data shows that the kinetic rate of gold leaching is correlated in a first-order dependence with the actual copper concentration in the solution, which increases with the concomitant dissolution of copper and gold from the PCBs. A lower threshold of 0.017M and an upper threshold of 0.15M copper in solution were determined, in between which gold extraction shows this first-order rate increase. The upper threshold is potentially linked to the onset of copper precipitation, which blinds the metal surfaces, slowing further leaching. The findings of this study suggest that in an industrial recovery operation of gold from waste PCB using the thiosulfate method, copper concentrations need to be carefully monitored, and the process should preferably operate with uncut or coarsely cut untreated boards to minimize exposure to copper circuits.
