The knowledge of the final location of a drillhole is critical in obtaining the expected blasting results. This paper proposes a new methodology to control the drilling accuracy in open-pit mines using aerial images and machine learning. Specifically, it investigates how support vector machines (SVM) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) are useful for automatically detecting blastholes over drone images captured in blasting patterns. Several datasets were obtained from different mines in Nevada (USA) and were used to train and test models. We then processed those images to create orthomosaic and digital elevation representations of the patterns. Thousands of patches were then extracted and augmented to develop SVM and CNN models. The results demonstrate that machine learning is useful for drillhole detection and, in this way, to control the drilling accuracy and use the explosive energy more efficiently.

Steel is produced in a basic oxygen furnace from hot metal obtained from a blast furnace. A sintered iron ore with good hightemperature properties (strength and permeability) should be used as feed to the blast furnace. The quality of this sintered ore depends on the reactivity of the iron ore used as feed to the sinter plant during the lime assimilation step in the sintering process. The penetration test is the standard method for evaluating the reactivity of iron ore with lime. It is, however, difficult to determine the exact depth of penetration from the standard test. A new test method is proposed that allows automatic evaluation of iron ores in terms of lime assimilation with increasing temperature. A comparison of the coefficients of variation for the new and standard methods for each ore type demonstrates that the results of the new test are more reproducible and more precise than those of the standard method. The test is also less time-consuming and easier to implement.

South Africa is one of the leading producers and exporters of coal globally. A significant amount of the country’s production is obtained from previously mined underground bord and pillar workings. This coal is in the form of pillars and remnants on the roof and floor of the old workings. The good quality coal pillars were left behind as primary support during underground bord and pillar mining operations. Due to the depletion of virgin coal reserves, the pillars and remnant coal are now removed using opencast mining rather than underground methods. However, the secondary extraction of pillars and remnant coal from the old workings using opencast methods entails some serious challenges that have a negative impact on the safety and productivity of the operations, affecting both personnel and machinery. If these risk factors and challenges are managed properly, then the opencast mining operations could remove the pillars safely at recoveries competitive with those of virgin coal operations. In this study we review the recurring challenges affecting opencast pillar mining by means of field investigations and consultations with experts at five opencast pillar mining operations, and evaluate the best practices used to combat these challenges. It was found that each mine has its own unique conditions and challenges.

A recent experimental pillar extraction project at a UG2 bord-and-pillar mine presented a unique opportunity to compile a new pillar database. Currently, the South African hard rock bordand- pillar mines are designed using the Hedley and Grant formula with a modified K-value. This empirically derived formula was developed for uranium mines in the Elliot Lake district of Canada. The use of this formula for the design of pillars in South Africa is questionable. Very few pillar failures have nevertheless been observed and its current calibrations for the various reef types are possibly too conservative. A new UG2 pillar database of 66 pillars, of which seven are classified as failed, was compiled by the authors. This enabled a revised ‘first-order’ calibration of the K-value for the Hedley and Grant formula. The new estimated value for the UG2 is K = 75 MPa. This gives a pillar strength that is more conservative than the PlatMine formula. This work should nevertheless be considered as only a preliminary calibration as the database was small. Further work is also required to determine whether the exponents in the formula for the width and height parameters are appropriate for UG2 pillars.

"This article is devoted to the introduction of a new technique of electrical resistivity data processing called residual resistivity (RR). We define RR as measured resistivity minus background resistivity. To determine the background resistivity, the data acquired from electrical resistivity measurements along a given survey line is evaluated, and then an equation is fitted to the data corresponding to a chosen measurement station as a function of current electrode spacing (or array length). The RR technique was applied to several synthetic models to compare the conventional resistivity inversion of each model with its RR-based inversion. A case study was carried out in a karstic area in Zarrinabad, Lorestan Province, western Iran, to detect the location and geometry of probable cavities by conventional resistivity inversion and RR-based inversion. The results showed that the anomalous zones are better highlighted in the RR-based inversion images in comparison with the conventional inversion images. In some cases, anomalies detected by the RR-based images were hidden in the conventional method. IntroductionThe geoelectrical resistivity method has been widely used since the early 20th century, and plays an important role in several fields such as groundwater and subsurface mineral exploration, geotechnical and environmental investigations, and archeological studies (Bayrak and Senel, 2012; Candansayar and Basokur, 2001; Fehdi et al., 2011; Hee et al., 2010; Osella et al., 2003; Wilkinson et al., 2010). The goal of geoelectrical resistivity surveys is to determine the distribution of subsurface resistivity by measuring the current-potential difference on the ground surface (Aizebeokhai et al., 2010). In the electrical resistivity method, an electrical current is injected into the ground by two electrodes, called current electrodes (AB), and the potential difference is measured between another pair of electrodes, the potential electrodes (MN). Several methods of interpretation are available for application to electrical resistivity data, the simplest being the graphical interpretation of the apparent electrical resistivity pseudo-sections along each survey line. A second method, electrical resistivity inversion, has been developed to create relatively accurate two- and threedimensional computational resistivity models of subsurface sections (Loke and Barker, 1996; Niwas and Mehrotra, 1997; Nordiana et al., 2014; Oldenburg and Li, 1994; Papadopoulos et al., 2009; Yilmaz and Narman, 2014). In the inversion method, models of subsurface objectives are mathematically inverted to reach optimal solutions subject to prescribed objective functions, constrains, and convergence criteria. A common problem when using the electrical resistivity inversion method is that the inversion model of an electrical resistivity profile may be non-unique because different inhomogeneities in the investigation media can result in the same electrical response (Smith and Vozzof, 1984)."

This article captures the intrinsic differences of thermal coal products, their utilization and their substitution characteristics. South Africa produces approximately 245 million tonnes of coal annually. Eskom consumes 46% (approximately 112 million tonnes), 26% (approximately 65 million tonnes) is exported, and SASOL Synthetic Fuels consumes 18% (approximately 44 million tonnes) and a further 9% (approximately 22 million tonnes) is consumed by domestic users in various different industries. Marketing theory contributes significantly to understanding the importance of technical product and quality appreciation and comprehension, encompassing elements of price, distribution, and promotion. Coal product specification is determined by the inherent geology of a resource and the number of complex actions to market the product to a specific consuming market. Sampling, analyses, beneficiation application, and an array of parameters contribute to matching thermal coal products to the value-in-use it provides to the different markets and its consuming industries. Coal producer shave come under increased scrutiny since South Africa has been experiencing electricity shortages since early 2008. General misunderstandings were declared on public forums and in the media by both legislators and the South African public since a perception developed that South African coal producers are exporting coal that could be utilized by Eskom.

Float-and-sink analysis is widely used in the coal industry to obtain washability data, yielding important information about beneficiation potential and performance. This method is associated with health and environmental problems, and research into alternative densimetric methods is important. The RhoVol is a new technology developed by De Beers Group Technology South Africa (DebTech) for the image-based generation of densimetric data from ores. The analysis is done on a per-particle basis, within a size range of +3 mm –8 mm. In this paper we compare the established methods used for the float-and-sink analysis of coal with a new method using RhoVol. The aim of the study was to determine the validity of the information obtained from the RhoVol analyser by performing comparative densimetric analysis on three different coal samples. The results showed that the RhoVol method was more rapid, safe, and precise, but tended to consistently underestimate the density of the coal sample, probably due to varying coal porosity.

The paper will attempt to identify the threats, however obscure, that could confront the South African platinum industry. South Africa has the largest reserves of platinum group metals in the world, and is the largest producer of those metals. This situation is no different from that which existed in the gold sector fifty years ago. Since then South Africa?s share of world gold production has dwindled, and the gold mining industry has lost its dominance. Unlike gold, platinum has widespread use as an industrial commodity. Its investment value is a minor portion of its total value. It is therefore subject to different market forces. The sheer magnitude of the industry in South Africa obscures the fact that it is a wasting industry, and that South Africa exports almost all its production as a refined metal in the form of autocatalyst. Since Hotelling published his seminal work The economics of non-renewable resource in 1931,the science of mineral economics has developed exponentially. The paper will present a background of mineral economic theory and compare to this the development of the South African platinum industry. Of particular concern to a mineral exporting country is the question of mineral rent?its definition and employment. This will be the mail theme of the paper.

ST Equipment & Technology (STET)’s tribo-electrostatic belt separator technology allows for the beneficiation of fine mineral powders by means of an entirely water-free technology with high throughput and low energy consumption. The STET separator is suited for separation of very fine (<1 μm) to moderately coarse (500 μm) particles, in contrast to other electrostatic processes that are typically limited to particles >75 μm in size. STET has performed exploratory studies with several iron ores including tailings and experimental results to date have demonstrated that low-grade iron fines can be upgraded by means of STET tribo-electrostatic separator to commercial grades (58-65%Fe). Experimental results together with high-level economic evaluations indicate that scavenging processes involving low drying costs, DSO operations and tailings beneficiation offer a commercially viable processing method to recover fine iron that would otherwise be lost by traditional processing. Dry electrostatic processing of iron ore presents a clean, low-energy opportunity for iron producers to reduce costs and wet tailings generation associated with traditional gravimetric, flotation and wet magnetic separation circuits. Moreover, STET technology allows for mining waste utilisation and resource recovery from iron ore fines and tailings, therefore offering processors a novel method to recover fines that would otherwise be difficult to process to sellable grades with existing technologies. Hydrocyclones are widely used in wet mineral classification applications and can be notoriously prone to wear. The methods currently used for quantifying hydrocyclone wear profiles are mostly twodimensional. In this paper it was attempted to quantify and monitor wear in three-dimensions, using a micro-CT scanner (Nikon XTH 225 ST). Hydrocyclone wear and, more specifically, spigot wear was investigated on a Multotec HC250 (Dc 250 mm, barrel diameter) hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone is lined by a vulcanised natural rubber compound within a metal shell, with a thermosetting polyurethane spigot and vortex finder. Tests were conducted on the hydrocyclone in a pilot-scale recirculating test setup. The wear rate of the spigot was quantified by measuring the volume change within the spigot over 122 days in operation, using the micro-CT scanner. After 122 days in operation (recirculating feed materials) the wear in the hydrocyclone led to only a 13.67% loss of spigot volume. The relatively low wear rate could be related to the fact that material recirculation led to particle smoothing and a reduction in size, thereby decreasing the wear rate. This also shows the enormous influence that particle shape and size have on wear. The research was conducted with the support of Multotec, NECSA and the University of Pretoria. Coal is a complex mixture of organic and mineral constituents and is the most abundant resource of fossil energy in the world. In recent years, significant research into dry coal beneficiation has gained much attention, primarily due to the need to improve grades and reduce the environmental contaminants in coal without the use of water, and to achieve this in as cost-effective manner as possible, relative to wet beneficiation processes. This paper seeks to review the application of various electrostatic separators with their process principles, to draw comparisons between different dry beneficiation techniques with specific emphasis on the tribo-electrostatic separation method, and finally to report the results of tribo electrostatic separation conducted on various South African coals. Previous research conducted on Indian, European and American coals has indicated that this technique is likely to lead to significant economic benefit through the reduction of ash content, NOx and more specifically Sox by separating out the liberated Fe-S-bearing minerals prior to utilization. The removal of the latter suite of minerals is also likely to significantly reduce or eliminate the emissions of associated trace elements, including mercury and arsenic. The research results reported in this paper indicate that the rotary tribo-electrostatic process has the potential for significant upgrading of high ash pulverized South African coal. The impact of various operational parameters was investigated and key factors established for the optimum recovery of low ash and low sulphur fine coal.

The Council for Geoscience (CGS) performed a macroseismic investigation following the occurrence of an earthquake in the Boksburg area on 11 June 2023. The event had a magnitude of ML 4.4 and a focal mechanism that showed the event as having strike-slip motion along a northwest-southeast oriented fault. The event resulted in aftershocks, some of which occurred away from the causative fault in the east in an area without a mapped fault. However, the cluster of past events in that area suggests that there is an active fault. Due to the size of the main earthquake, a macroseismic survey was conducted to determine its impact on the community in the region. Analysis of observed data obtained from questionnaires resulted in the creation of 153 intensity data points. Their distribution showed high intensity values close to the earthquake source area. However, the investigation highlighted a number of anomalies, such as the higher than expected intensity values observed far from the event epicentre. It could be that these anomalies are caused by site conditions, for example, amplification of ground motion due to thick soil layers.

In this study, potassium ferrocyanide, a non-toxic cyanide precursor in dark and diffuse reflection environments, was applied as a reagent for the leaching of gold. The free cyanide ions were gradually released from the potassium ferrocyanide solution under the ultraviolet light. Orthogonal leaching experiments were performed in gold ore to analyse the effect of solution pH, potassium ferrocyanide dosage, and temperature in potassium ferrocyanide solution system under UV light. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to explore the role of potassium ferrocyanide in gold leaching, Optimised results showed that the gold recovery reached 67.74% in a high-alkaline environment at a 12.6 pH, 3.8 kg/t potassium ferrocyanide dosage, 62°C, and irradiance of 10mW/cm-2. The gold leaching kinetics was monitored by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) of potassium ferrocyanide solution. The results indicate that the gold extraction process consists of two processes: adsorption and leaching, and a rigid adsorption layer formed on the reaction surface. Furthermore, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the gold sensor surface after leaching reaction showed that -C≡N appears on the gold sensor surface, and the gold is oxidised to form AuCN complexes. This paper shows, through a case study, the impact of multivariate grade modelling upon mine design and mine planning. A deposit explored by drill holes is considered, in which the grades of five elements (copper, silver, molybdenum, arsenic, and antimony) are of interest. Forty alternative models of the deposit are constructed by fitting the joint correlation structure of the grade variables and using conditional cosimulation. In addition, a reference model, obtained by averaging the alternative models, is also considered. The study shows that the resulting mine design (final pit characteristics and production schedules) is sensitive to the grade model under consideration, and that the design based on the reference model may not be optimal when compared to the alternative models based on cosimulation. However, when assuming a given long-term plan and extraction sequence, the grades and net present value (NPV) calculated on the reference model are unbiased with respect to those calculated on the alternative models with the same extraction sequence. The latter allow assessing the possible dispersion of the actual grades and NPV around their expected values, and are useful for the planner in order to determine the probability of meeting given production targets and of exceeding or falling short of given threshold grades. Additionally, unlike cosimulation, the separate simulation of each grade variable leads to unrealistic resource models and to biased results in mine design and mine planning. This approach should therefore be avoided, unless the grade variables are spatially uncorrelated.

The diamond industry is no newcomer to High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) as it has used the technology for more than 20 years, predominantly in secondary crushing and recrushing roles. In fact it could be argued that the diamond industry has led the way for the wider minerals industry to consider its application. In existing conventional secondary cone crushing applications, large valuable diamonds are" won" through meticulously managing the recovery process within defined particle size ranges. Conventional crushers operate with relatively large closed side settings, but have the potential to damage diamonds by making direct contact with the sides of the crusher. Cone crushers also result in steep product size distributions that run a high risk of losing many of the smaller, unliberated but more abundant diamonds from the rock. This current comminution paradigm of particle size reduction management results in recrushing processing applications or plants where HPGRs are often used.

Preconcentration of precious and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, the development and the operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. Ore preconcentration designates an operation consisting of sorting an ore to reduce the quantity of waste material sent to the concentrator. It can be seen as rejecting waste material as much as possible, without compromising the recovery, or as the recovery of as much valuable metal as possible into an optimum mass yield. Benefits of preconcentration are multiple: grinding energy savings, costs reduction, lower environmental footprint, extension of the reserves, etc. However, all of these benefits do not apply simultaneously and are not applicable to each ore type. Technologies employed for preconcentration are highly dependent on ore properties, especially on the particle size at which the gangue is liberated. Thus, from coarser to finer particle sizes, technologies such as screening, ore sorting, gravity separation (Dense Media Separation (DMS) and jigs) and coarse flotation could be used for the rejection of liberated gangue. The difficulty starts when a benchmark is needed to select a suitable technology, especially for low-grade gold deposits. This paper presents the challenges of comparing lab-scale technologies (DMS versus jig) for gold preconcentration. The experimental data will show to what extent comparing two lab-scale gravity technologies for gold preconcentration can be challenging. An attempt to evaluate the energy savings by assessing the hardness of the tailings after gravity separation will also be presented.
