Post-mining land use for the production of industrial crops has the potential to mitigate environmental and socio-economic impacts of mine closure and stimulate post-mining economic growth. Fibre-rich plants are of particular interest due to their multi-product potential. In the South African context, where there are many abandoned and end-of-life mines near human settlements, an opportunity presents to assess the feasibility of transforming post-mining land into productive land and building resilient communities through the development of multi-product value chains from fibre-rich plants such as kenaf, hemp or bamboo. This paper provides an overview of the plant selection criteria, phytoremediation potential and the downstream options for the recovery of products and value from bast fibre plants (hemp and kenaf) and bamboo. Based on findings from a comprehensive review of the published literature, as well as interviews with relevant experts within South Africa, it appears that bast fibre plants are the best downstream option for producing ‘green’ textiles and high-end niche products, whereas bamboo is more suitable as a replacement for conventional timber. Although fibre plants have the potential to extract metals from soils, high concentrations may inhibit plant growth and affect the quality of the final fibre product. Further site-specific studies would thus be required to select the best route for both land remediation and optimal product recovery. Comminution tests are an essential element in the design of ore beneficiation plants. Many methods have been developed to assess the breakage characteristics of rocks to generate parameters for modelling. However, most of the existing methods are laborious, expensive and require large samples. Consequently, test work has been traditionally conducted with a few representative reference samples. On the other hand, geometallurgical modelling programs require an extensive amount of test work to allow understanding the variability of ore properties within the deposit and establish spatial geometallurgical domains that show the differential responses to mineral processing. Therefore, comminution tests for geometallurgy need to be more efficient in terms of time, cost and sample size. This paper introduces a new testing device (Geopyörä) which is capable of measuring forces and energy applied to rock particles during the breakage process. The new testing method uses smaller samples and can be up to 50 times faster than other commonly used tests in the industry. This paper presents the concept prototype and the preliminary test work results, which have been benchmarked against some of the industry standard tests, such as the JK Drop Weight Test (JKDWT), the SMC Test® and the Bond ball mill test. Introduction Zircon is a natural occurring mineral and may exhibit natural low level radioactivity. It contains trace levels (90 to120 pCi/g and 110 to 115 pCi/g respectively or 3.3 to 4.4Bq/g and 4.1 to 4.3 Bq/g) of naturally occurring radioactive uranium and thorium. This mineral is often found in a suiteof minerals (rutile, ilmenite and monazite) Due to the overlap in physical properties of monazite (containing 4–7% thorium) with some of the zircon (slight magnetic susceptibility) it often contaminates the zircon, adding to the levels of thorium in the product. Hazards associated with the products from zircon and its processing is inhalation of respirable dust (generated by milling) containing radioactive uranium and thorium which may cause cancer of the lungs. Legislature regulates the transport, use, workplace environment exposure and storage of radioactive material. In America the general regulation for the unlicensed use of low levels of radioactive materials limits the concentration to 500 ppm (U plus Th). Europe (IAEA) specifies a limit of10 Bg/g (Bequerels per gram) on the parents for transport only which is a higher level of U+Th. Companies selling into these markets need to comply with these regulations and certification is therefore required, not only of the major constituents determining the price, but of the U and Th levels as well. Exceeding the limits for U and Th may result in material being returned to the country of origin. However, for the analyst the requirement is to analyse for these elements throughout the production process as well as the analysis of the ‘tails’ that is returned to the mine area. This requires a wide range of concentration to be analysed. Methods of analysis A wide variety of methods exist for the analysis of U and Th in a range of matrices. (Table I) All these methods have been used with varying degrees of success in terms of accuracy. Overall precision for the different techniques varies from 5 to 25% relative. Time to produce results from these methods vary from a few minutes to several days. The Production Chemist is expected to produce between5 and 10 analyses per hour for process control purposes. A suitable technique that fits this requirement is X-Ray Fluorescence. Both Wavelength Dispersive (WDXRF) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) instruments are suitable. X-Ray analysis in general has a few major advantages over competitive techniques. •It is fairly simple to set up and interferences are known and easy to correct •It has multi-element analysis capabilities •Clean spectral lines for U and Th (in zircon specifically) •Uncomplicated and easy to measure background •Low detection limits (3 to 5 ppm) •A very high degree of precision •Sample preparation is uncomplicated and fast (pressed powders and fused beads). In Zircon (ZrSiO4) processed sands the matrix is constant(>99% ZrSiO4) and the background is thus essentially constant. High density slurry and paste tailings systems offer significant environmental benefits primarily related to reduced water consumption. However, these potential advantages need to be evaluated on a project-by-project basis. The successful design of a thickened or paste tailings system requires that the system is designed to accommodate the effect of the high density slurry on pumps, pipelines and the overall system operation. The transport system must be designed as an integrated unit and the interaction of all the components need to be considered. The transport system includes the slurry preparation plant, the pump station and the pipeline. This paper assesses the impact of increasing the slurry density in a platinum tailings system from conventional densities to thickened and paste tailings densities. As slurry density and rheology increase, there is a sharp increase in energy consumption for the additional water savings and this additional cost needs to be considered. A case study shows that there is a considerable benefit in increasing densities to the point at which tailings can be still be deposited in the standard manner. For existing systems, increasing density can result in an increased capacity at a marginal power cost, provided that the slurry is not too viscous. For a new system, a smaller pump and pipeline can result in lower capital costs and a marginally higher energy cost, if the optimum density is selected. Keywords: tailings, paste, pumping, slurry

Some observations on 'ancient' mining at Phalaborwa C. E. MORE. B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) A brief account is given of historical references to the Phalaborwa area, the first being to the mountain of copper and iron sought by Francois de Cuiper in 1725. These are followed by a description of several finds in the area, which are related to finds described in the literature and to Bantu tradition on the subject. Phalaborwa is one of the earliest known mining sites in the Republic of South Africa, Loolekop having been a mining centre, as shown by carbon-14 dating, since 770 A.D.

Soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDAs) are proving to be the future of sustainable and environmental-friendly mining. These expansive chemicals become critical when there is a need to break rock close to communities, environmentally sensitive areas, and critical structures and infrastructure. Unlike explosives, the SCDAs do not generate air-blast, ground vibrations, flyrock, noise, dust, and noxious fumes, which can negatively affect the environment, surrounding communities, sensitive areas, and critical structures and infrastructure. Over the years, several types of SCDA products have been used successfully in the civil and construction industries for the demolition of old and dilapidated buildings near vibrations and environmentally sensitive areas. They have also been used to fragment boulders in the mining and construction industries. However, to date, no study has investigated the applications of soundless chemical demolition on a large-scale in opencast mines. Therefore, this study evaluated whether soundless chemical demolition can break large volumes of in situ rock. This was done by conducting five trials using Nex-Pand soundless chemical demolition agents in four different surface mining sites. Trial 1 was unsuccessful as it was unable to break the rock due to the large confinement between the drilled holes and the use of a hole diameter that was 182% larger than recommended. Trial 2 was a success as it was able to fracture the rock with a crack width that reached 110 mm after 72 hours. Trial 3 generated cracks at the biggest hole diameter of 102 mm. The cracks developed and ceased to increase after 96 hours at a crack width of 100 mm. Trial 4 achieved the smallest crack width due to a very competent rock compared to the other sites. Trial 5 generated cracks at a slower rate than other trials because of the use of Nex-Pand powder at lower ambient temperatures than recommended. These trials proved that soundless chemical demolition agents can replace explosives in areas closer to sensitive infrastructure and communities. This will ultimately enable mines to unlock value and access deposits in these areas.

AK6 is a Cretaceous aged kimberlite located in the north-east of Botswana, close to Debswana's Drapa and Letlhakane Mines. It was discovered by Debswana in 1969, but was considered unattractive from an economic perspective. In 2003, Debot Prospecting Pty Ltd ('Debot') re-assessed the area and with the advent of new prospecting technology, particularly large diameter drilling ('LDD') and more detailed ground geophysical surveys found AK6 to be of interest. In 2005, the Boteti joint venture was formed between Debot and African Diamonds plc ('AFD'), which covered a number of Prospecting Licenses, including that which contained AK6.

"A hydrometallurgical route was developed to extract metals such as gold, silver, copper, and selenium from anode slime from Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex in Iran. For the extraction of copper by leaching, the anode slime was heated and stirred with 4 M sulphuric acid in the presence of oxygen. Optimal conditions for recovery of copper were temperature 80°C, mixing time 5 hours, and oxygen flow rate 2 L/min, resulting in a copper recovery of 94.47%. Silver and selenium were dissolved by leaching anode slime from which the copper had been removed with nitric acid. For gold extraction, anode slime was heated with aqua regia at 90°, and the gold then extracted with 2-ethyl-hexanol at a concentration of 0.5 M and phase ratio of 4. The extract was then stripped with soda solution at pH=10.5 and a phase ratio of 5. Finally, gold was recovered by precipitation with oxalic acid at a ratio of mass to volume 10 g/L. Total gold recovery was 80%. IntroductionDuring the electrorefining of copper, some metals are accumulated in the byproduct anode slime, which is an important source for recycling and recovery of these metals (Petkova, 1994). In this paper, a hydrometallurgical route is described for the recovery of precious metals from copper anode slime of Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, which is located in southeastern Iran .Copper anode slime is black or gray powder with a particle size less than 200 mesh. Approximately 2 to 20 kg of anode slime is produced per ton of copper cathode. The slime is characterized by higher amount of Ag, Se, Pb, and Cu compared to other metals and a very low Au content (Khaleghi and Ghader, 2013).The copper anode slimes are composed of 11.69% selenium, 3.93% copper, 5.26% silver, 0.13% gold, and 45% barite, plus lead, tellurium, antimony, sulphur, and silica with small amounts of nickel, iron, zinc, and bismuth. Gold is one of the most important noble metals due to its wide applications in industry and economic importance, so recovery of gold from slime is more appealing than that of other metals. According to the World Gold Council (2013), the demand for gold has increased during the last decade. This increase is due not only to the increasing demands of the jewellery market, but also to the increasing demand for gold in industrial as well as medical applications (Ranjbar et al., 2014)."

Human beings have been dependent on metals and alloys for livelihoods since time immemorial. In fact, there is irrefutable evidence that successful ancient civilizations achieved supremacy over their environments through the mastery of metals and alloys (Miller, 1995; Mtetwa, 2022). Over time, metals and alloys have evolved to become ubiquitous engineering materials indispensable to mankind, with applications in industrial and residential infrastructure, agriculture, energy generation and storage, transportation and communication systems, and manufacturing, among others (Elshkaki et al., 2018; Watari et al., 2021). Population growth, technological developments, and increase in urbanization and industrialization are all intricately linked to the intensity of use of metals and alloys. With up to 5 billion people estimated to live in urban areas by 2030 (Armstrong, 2009), the demand for metals and alloys will inevitably increase in order to satisfy the increased demand for infrastructure, machinery, and other human needs (Elshkaki et al., 2018; Watari et al., 2021). According to LePan (2022), urbanization and growth of mega-cities will increase the demand for metals and alloys, such as nickel, steel, aluminium, and copper by 116%, 50%, 57%, and 26%, respectively, between 2019 and 2035. Naturally, the production of metals and alloys from natural ores, secondary resources, and/or a combination of both, to meet this increased demand will invariably lead to the increase in generation of deleterious emissions in the form of wastes. In fact, mining and metallurgical wastes currently constitute the world’s largest anthropogenic streams by mass, often containing a high concentration of elements and compounds that can cause potential damage to natural ecosystems and humans (Hudson-Edwards et al., 2011; Lottermoser, 2011; Matinde et al., 2018; Seetharaman et al., 2022). Obviously, society’s heavy reliance on new mineral resources to drive the emerging energy transition entails that the legacy of these waste streams will continue unabated for the near-foreseeable future. The scarcity of high-grade mineral reserves, coupled with deliberate efforts to solve the anthropogenic circularity conundrum, therefore introduces a high level of urgency in the metal extraction industry to develop nascent and more eco-friendly processes and technologies. Cemented backfilling has enabled underground hard rock mines to extract orebodies more safely with improved ore recovery. It is important to estimate the minimum required strength parameters for a backfill mix by optimizing the binder percentage to enable cost-effective and safe stoping operations. We conducted three-dimensional numerical modelling to study the effect of various stoping parameters on the stability of a free-standing backfill wall. A Mohr-Coulomb material model was used for the backfill material and the rock-fill interface. A strength reduction technique, excluding friction angle, was employed to arrive at a minimum stable strength value for the backfill. For a given combination of strength values, the stability state of the backfill wall could be demarcated using a displacement and yield zone tracking method. The numerical modelling results are compared to some earlier theoretical models. From the simulations, a predictive equation is developed to predict the required strength parameters for a backfill mix to ensure a stable free-standing wall. Examples are given of the successful use of the predictive equation at some underground hard rock mine sites in India.

"Mineral texture is a critical factor which controls ore variability and is an important attribute in geometallurgy. In relation to downstream processes, it affects the fracture pattern during breakage, where rock strength is inherently a function of mineral texture. Because of the subjective nature of mineral texture, it has not been easy to quantify, especially in the context of a measurement suitable for use in geometallurgical programmes. The aim of this paper is to present the first steps in developing a 3D mineral texture quantification method for drill core and to assess its sensitivity to differences in rock strength using a case study. The methodology includes classifying the textural information using the 3D grey level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM) and X-ray computed tomography (XCT) coupled method. Rock strength tests were performed using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The case study investigates a heterogeneous polymetallic sulphide deposit and a homogeneous shale subdivided into three ’mineral textural types’. The variability is largely captured by the GLCM matrices, and preliminary trends can be observed where the shale is finer grained and has a higher yield strength in comparison with the coarser grained polymetallic sulphide ore. IntroductionModern mining requires the exploitation of lower grade and more complex, heterogeneous orebodies to address the growing industry demands. Historically, processing plants were designed and built based on average ore characteristics and therefore are relatively inflexible when facing the full spectrum of ore variability in heterogeneous orebodies (Lamberg, 2011; Lotter, 2011; Schouwstra et al., 2013). The practice of geometallurgy represents an opportunity to manage ore variability in the mining industry (Powell 2013; Baum, 2014; Yildirim et al., 2014; Nguyen, 2013). It focuses on quantifying the relationships between ore characteristics and their downstream mining and processing responses, often starting with small-scale laboratory testing. The purpose of geometallurgy is linked to maximizing the net present value (NPV) of an orebody by minimizing technical and operational risk – where ‘ore variability’ is considered one of the most significant technical risks."

The paper discusses the treatment problem of mine (waste) water for enterprises of the Russian Arctic. The wide range of relevant pollutants, financial resources, the availability of land for the construction of a treatment plant, waste generated during the treatment process are some of the factors controlling current and future process design solutions. All mining operations have adopted water treatment and water quality monitoring solutions, however there is no single approach to the problem and each industry participant operates within the scope of its available resources. The range of existing and emerging methods is extensive — from using constructed wetlands for the deposition of mineral nitrogen compounds in settling ponds, reagent deposition and chemical coagulation in exhausted mine workings, and filtering dams on the surface to retrofitting existing mine drainage treatment plants with the adoption of the electrochemical coagulation process. Methods of wastewater treatment from heavy metals, oil products, and nitrogen compounds are demonstrated in the example of two industrial facilities in the Murmansk region. It was found that the use of electrochemical coagulation provides effective treatment of mine water from NO3, NO2, Ni, Fetotal and petroleum hydrocarbons (the degree of purification from 50.5-99.7%), the use of phytotreatment system provides wastewater treatment from ammonium ions and nitrite ions by 53-84%, nitrate ions - by 22%. "In mineral resource evaluations, geostatistical methods known as global change of support allow prediction of the theoretical histogram and gradetonnage curves prior to interpolations or simulations of grades. Two methods commonly used by professionals to guide the choice of interpolation parameters and assess results are the discrete Gaussian model (DGM) and the indirect lognormal correction (IndLog). These models rely upon an estimate of the dispersion variance of the blocks, which is derived by numerical integration of the variogram model over a discretized block. Due to difficulties in obtaining well-formed traditional experimental variograms (especially in the presence of outliers and limited clustered data), many professionals prefer to use ‘normalized’ variograms such as correlogram (non-ergodic variogram), pairwise-relative, or variogram of the normal score transform. A series of simulations with different grade distributions and variogram models are used to assess the performances and robustness of the various variogram estimators with respect to the DGM and IndLog global change of support. Our results show that the traditional variogram, the correlogram, and normal score variogram have better performances, compared to pairwise, for both DGM and IndLog. Moreover, DGM provided better results than IndLog for the grade distributions that are not strictly lognormal. These findings provide valuable guides for geostatistics practitioners. One cangenerally recognize three main parts directlyrelated to the block model:•,Pre-processing: exploratory data analysis (EDA), domaining, capping, compositing, declustering, variography•,Processing: block size, neighbourhood, interpolation types (linear or nonlinear)•,Post-processing: classification, reporting.Pre-processing aims to simplify and strengthen the processing step. Ideally, domaining, capping. and compositing is aimed at defining a single homogenous population. During the processing phase, a common practice is to use a block size corresponding to the planned selective mining unit (SMU). In most precious metal deposits (gold, notably), the SMU size is frequently smaller than the recommended half data spacing (Journel and Huijbregts 1978), resulting in high estimation variance and either a high degree of smoothing if the regression slope is managed or a high degree of conditional bias if it is not. Most actual resource estimates are made using block sizes between one-quarter to one-sixth of the average data spacing, sometimes even smaller. In addition to the block size, the interpolation choices for the neighbourhood selection and interpolator (e.g. inverse distance (ID) or ordinary kriging) are often based on the Qualified Person’s (the QP) experience and some basic validation plots that often do not consider the conditional bias (e.g. trends or SWATHs plots, which are designed to compare two sets of population using a one-dimensional graph)."

"Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

Insurers are hesitant to provide coverage for Open cast Pit side wall collapse, and even the consequent damage to plant and equipment in the pit as well as the resulting interference with the mining operations. After a general introduction to relevant principles of insurance, this paper addresses some of the major reasons for that reluctance based upon the authors? extensive claims experience, examines what limited coverage can still be obtained and looks to the future possibilities. Confidentiality of sources and examples referred to in this presentation is a natural imperative so that a bibliography is not provided but reference is made to relevant sample insurance policy wordings.

Introducing your Council. Mr J. S. Freer, Pr. Eng., after matriculating at Michaelhouse in 1944, obtained a B.8c. degree in chemistry and biology (1948) and a B.Sc. (Hons.) in chemistry (1949) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Mr G. C. Thompson matriculated at Dale College in 1951. He then attended the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c. (Min. Eng.) in 1959. Mr P. T. Fewell was born and educated in the United Kingdom. After obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) in 1958 at Sheffield University, he emigrated to South Africa. DtP. R. Jochens, Pr. Eng., has been a member of Council since 1974, serving as President in 1980-1981.

The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk.

{Figure 1} The Placer Dome-Western Areas Joint Venture?s South Deep Twin Shaft Complex, has been planned and dreamt of for nearly 20 years. [ ] The gold reserve at the bottom of these shafts is one of the largest single intact gold deposits remaining in the world today, containing an estimated 57 million ounces. This is about the size of the fictitious reserve created by inventive prospectors for the infamous BREEX scam in Kalimantan about ten years ago and about the size of the reserve Harmony claims as its own in it?s current hostile takeover bid for Gold Fields. So it is certainly of the magnitude that dreams are made of.
