Artificial release of snow avalanches, through the use of explosives, is a necessary component of safety planning and operations for ski areas throughout the Western United States, as well as in other alpine regions of the world. Climatic, meteorological and terrain factors leading to the development of avalanche conditions, in addition to release mechanisms and magnitude of the avalanche problem to ski areas will be discussed.

There are several ways to get a positive reaction from neighbors to blasting projects. When you need to enter structures to conduct a pre-blast inspection, the impression you make on the structure owner must be positive from the very start. Public relations with neighbors is the key. The purpose of all communications with persons residing near planned blasting operations is to educate structure owners as to what will take place during the blasting operations, to explain that safe blasting practices will be followed and vibration and airblast limits will be imposed to protect surrounding structures from damage. Once access into the structure is obtained, the structure owner can be shown, by careful documentation, all existing cracks and defects in the structure prior to blasting and construction. The objective of your visit and all communications is get your foot into the door and win the confidence of the structure owner so that he or she understands blasting will not compromise the structure.

This paper considers the current methods of analysis employed, the validity of assumptions made and the reliability of results and predictions derived; where appropriate, alternative methods are proposed which are more accurate and can be applied with greater confidence. In regard to data collection, new local blasting data has been analysed and conclusions drawn but, due to the restricted amount of space available, reference to data set A only has been made in the text. The problem of mathematical model choice is considered and results for two and three parameter power laws are compared. The very important matter of parameter determination is discussed fully, with major emphasis being placed on the comparative merits of log-log linear, log-log planar and direct power law regression. Supporting data analysis examples are included. Assumptions regarding the normality of ‘best-fit’ regression model residual distributions are questioned and the reliability of associated safety limit determinations is discussed.

Identification of seismic events detected under a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty requires a clear physical understanding of the different types of seismic sources including mining explosions, rock bursts, mine collapse and small, shallow earthquakes. Constraint of the operative physical processes in the source region and linkage to the generation of seismic waveforms with particular emphasis on regional seismograms is needed. In order to properly address the multi-dimensional aspect of data sets designed to constrain these sources, we are investigating a number of modern visualization tools that have only recently become available with new, highspeed graphical computers that can utilize relatively large data sets. The results of this study will provide a basis for identifying important physical processes in the source region that contribute to regional seismograms.

To meet salt production needs over the remaining life of the Cayuga Mine at Lansing, New York, the Salt Division of Cargill, Inc. decided to build a new underground screening plant. The new plant required a chamber 50 feet wide by 250 feet long and nearly 70 feet high. On advice of their mining contractor, Dynatec Mining Company, the company chose an ingenious excavation method similar to sublevel stoping. This method eliminated the need for an access ramp, reduced equipment needs and excavation time substantially.

SAFEX International, as the name suggests, is a global organisation, which has the fundamental objective of improving the safety of operations concerned with the manufacture, storage, transport, and use of commercial and military explosives and pyrotechnic products throughout the world. It is a nonprofit making organisation of manufacturers of explosives from all parts of the world, founded in 1954 with the aim of exchanging experiences within the explosives industry. Every third year SAFEX organises a Congress during which members present papers on selected themes and discuss reports of significant incidents that occurred since the previous Congress. Admission is for SAFEX members only, thereby creating a safe environment for discussing problems “within the family”. The XV Congress will celebrate the Association’s 50th anniversary in Geneva where it was founded. An overview of the Congress indicates its structure and covers aspects such as the training event, technical seminars and the themes for the plenary sessions and associated workshops. The paper also highlights the special event for the chief executives of member companies and the review of incidents that occurred in the industry since the last Congress. The Congress concludes with a social programme for delegates and their partners on the last day.

In this paper, the model of optimizing selection on preparation of Powdery Emulsion Explosives(PEE) is established by the Neural Net Theory(NNT). On the basis of some data in the study of PEE, the training, prediction and optimizing selection of the Neural Net (NN) model are finished by a compiling procedure. In our previous work, the results of photographic observation using a high speed framing camera showed that the difference between precursor air shock wave velocity and detonation velocity was primary factor for the channel effect. It is assumed that the decreasing precursor air shock wave velocity can prevent the channel effect in charge hole.

Increased pressure by government agencies, higher safety standards, new levels of technology and mandatory certification programs, are forcing us to expand our awareness and increase our levels of efficiency. These higher standards require increased awareness. Increased awareness requires better training programs and better supervision with emphasis on production and the employee. This means the desire to improve must be instilled from the top down. this paper will explore the current impediments to this goal and discuss the possible solutions for achieving greater safety awareness, increased production and higher levels of personal achievement. Through the use of audio/visual aids, I will attempt to show the discrepancies as well as the solutions."

Others apply to subsequent mining unit operations and can generate data for objective assessment of blasting results. These new technologies can accurately capture the information component of blasthole drilling, andindeed of each unit operation. Knowledge can be extracted from this information and passed forward and back through the mining system to improve operations and factually assess results. Blast-induced damage criterion based on the peak particle velocity has worked reasonably well for estimating building damage. However, the same criterion cannot be used to estimate damage to rock and mine structures such as shaft and tunnel walls. It does not take into account the nature of seismic radiation pattern in the near-field, which is very different than what is obtained at far-off distances. To investigate this phenomenon, a systematic study has been carried out involving single-hole blasts and normal production blasts, with explosive source ranging from nearly point source charges to standard borehole sizes (6-7 m long explosive column), with charge weight varying from 0.5 kg to 30 kg. In the near-field, it is shown that, both P-wave and S-wave take a dominant position compared to the mainly surface waves measured in the far-field. These are shown to depend strongly not only on the length of the explosive column but also the way it is initiated in the borehole (i.e. direct vs. reverse initiation in the borehole) with respect to the target location. The seismic radiation patterns were recorded by high-frequency triaxial accelerometer stations grouted in the rock mass. This study describes the nature of seismic radiation in the near-field from long and short charges, the role of initiation direction and their effect on frequency with respect to sensor locations or target area of interest, and their implication in prediction of blast-induced damage in the near field.

Westslope Cutthroat trout have declined in distribution and abundance across their range and currently occupy about 59% of their historic habitat. Due to hybridization with non-native species such as rainbow trout, genetically pure populations persist in only 10% of that range. A westslope cutthroat trout population with relatively high genetic purity (97%) and conservation importance persists in less than two linear stream miles in the headwaters of the South Fork Madison River in southwest Montana. The relative purity of this population has been maintained through the presence of a downstream intermittent reach. However, spring flows fill the intermittent reach, creating a connection between occupied westslope cutthroat trout habitat in the headwaters and the habitat of competing trout species downstream.

In underground mining a great deal of time, money, effort, and resources have been used in the effort to minimize blast-induced damage. This damage occurs to the back, ribs, and pillars when the energy of the explosive is released back into the rock due to over confinement or the overloading of explosives in the perimeter holes. This damage can result in roof falls, dilution of ore, excessive rock bolting, scaling, screening, shot-creteing and other safety and support issues.

For the majority of open pit precious metal mines in the western United States, grade control practices have evolved as a direct result of the variable geology of the ore body and the lack of a clear visual or geologic distinction between ore and waste material. These practices often include the extensive use of buffer or choke blasting, in an attempt to minimize lateral movement of the muckpile. The Mackay School of Mines is conducting ongoing research, which aims to develop a practical method of measuring the movement of discrete “targets” placed within the body of the blast. The movement experienced by these targets can then be used to interpolate the movement of the blast as a whole. Typically, the boundaries between different material types are known as digging limits or polygons and are marked using colored flagging on the muckpile. If material movement can be measured using targets placed in the blast, these digging limits can be altered to reflect the blast-induced rock movement, reducing dilution and improving value recovery.

The long awaited arrival of a high accuracy detonator to reach the explosives end user will provide new opportunities the blasting community to become better equipped and able to improve upon the current approaches and methodologies used in blast design as they apply to the mitigation of adverse effects from blasting. This paper will detail the approach and findings throughout a several month research project to quantify the high accuracy detonator benefits and to mitigate a long standing vibration problem at a hard rock stone quarry in the state of New York. The tests conducted in this study were designed to provide important information as to the relationship between the use of high accuracy detonators and overall blast performance in terms of ground vibration prediction, control and improved rock fragmentation.

ALFRED NOBEL was born at Stockholm on October 21st. 1833, and died on December 10th, 1896. Although Sobrero’s discovery of nitroglycerin dated back to 1847, this explosive was manufactured on a commercial scale for the first time in 1862, by Nobel at a factory which he erected at Heleneborg, near Stockholm. These works were entirely wrecked by an explosion in 1864. In 1865, he erected works, which are still in existence, at Winterviken, near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel introduced modifications in the manufacture of nitroglycerin which were the subject of a patent (see footnote No. 1), and at the same time, claimed a process for the detonation of nitroglycerin. Nobel states that, up to that time, the method used for the manufacture of nitroglycerin consisted in pouring glycerin, drop by drop, into a mixture of sulphuric acid and nitric acid contained in a refrigerating mixture. In order that the nitroglycerin should not be decomposed, the temperature was not allowed to rise above 0° C.
