Traditionally fine aluminum is not used in dry commercial explosives due to the hazard associated with aluminum dust explosions during mixing. An industrial process has been developed which enables the safe use of paint grade Aluminum with ANFO. The addition of fine aluminum particles resulted in increased velocity of detonation of ANFO compositions. Velocities of detonation, in 52mm (2 1/16 in.) diameter confined charges were 20% higher than velocities of detonation of straight ANFO. The detonation performance of fine grained ANFO was not benefited by Al at the diameter tested. Furthermore use of larger Al flakes resulted in decreased velocities of detonation. The results are compatible with the experience of Al addition to high explosives. Tests were also conducted using bio-diesel, finding no substantial difference in the performance of AN fuel explosive compositions which used bio-diesel.

The Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation, and Enforcement (OSM) cited a large surface coal mine for a series of flyrock incidents that occurred when blasting close to the mining lease perimeter. The OSM placed the company on a pattern of violation status. It was determined through analysis of blasting practices that flyrock could be controlled at the mine by drilling a smaller diameter hole and stemming with crushed rock when blasting within 1,000’ (304 m) of the lease line. The procedure to install and remove the small diameter drill steel was cumbersome and dangerous because it was a manual transition. The drill carousel could only hold one diameter at the time the project was initiated. The process was very time consuming, involving a mechanic to transport the steel to the drill and spend up to 1.5 hours of downtime switching the steel. In addition, the hydraulically operated break-out wrench and break-out fork on the SKS Infinity Redrill® is only designed to work with one diameter, so these tools could not be used to disconnect subs and steels on the string. At the time, the mine’s breakdown was between 30-40% small diameter (6 ¾” (171 mm)) versus large diameter drilling (10 5/8” (270 mm)). The drill and blast group was challenged with the task to implement a 6s (Six Sigma) project that would reduce the amount of time spent on steel change-outs on the rotary drills while improving the safety of the task. A solution was proposed to carry the small diameter drill pipe, lower small diameter sub, and small diameter bit on board the drill at all times. The goal of the project was to carry the steel in the carousel after modification so that the driller could change the diameter himself on board the drill in less than 45 minutes without any assistance from a mechanic. The drill had to be modified so that the hydraulic operated break out wrench and deck fork could be utilized on both diameters. The drill accessory supplier and the mine worked together to design and implement design changes and new equipment onto two rotary drills, and new standard operating procedures (SOPs) were created for the new process. The project has been in the sustaining phase for approximately three months now and all steel diameter changes are completed by the operator under the allowable time limit.

Specialized marine blasting techniques were required to deepen and widen the access channel and turning basin of the Sudeste Port Terminal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This terminal has been designed to handle the exports of iron ore and other bulk solid cargoes to international markets. The Sudeste Port Terminal is connected to the iron ore quadrangle in Minas Gerais State by a dedicated railway line, giving Brazil’s independent miners a seamless access to global markets. However, the Sudeste Port Project is located in a protected marine environment. Blasting in this area has required a comprehensive blast induced ground vibrations monitoring and analysis program to ensure the safety of the sensitive structures surrounding of the blast areas. Nevertheless, the risk of generating higher ground vibrations on nearby structures due to the combination of short distances, larger excavations layers and complex geology, increased the complexity of the blast due to the limitations imposed by the maximum instantaneous charge and a demanding project schedule. Site-specific test blast programs were planned and executed in order to obtain in-situ vibration data to establish the local attenuation law, and also to better understand the role of dominant frequencies before production blasting started. This paper summarizes the main findings and solutions applied during the marine blasting project in the Sudeste Port Project.

Despite increasing competition from mechanical methods of tunnelling, the drill and blast method is often still the most viable method of excavating tunnels in strong and abrasive rock. To advance a tunnel using drill and blast, explosives are loaded into boreholes in the rock and detonated according to a prearranged sequence. On detonation of the explosive, the rock is fractured and displaced from its original position, leaving behind the desired void. Among the secondary effects of a tunnel blast are ground vibrations caused by elastic disturbances that propagate away from the blasted tunnel face. The possibility that such ground vibrations may cause permanent damage to property and substantial nuisance has generated significant opposition to the use of drill and blast, particularly in urban areas. It is therefore essential that the blasting engineer is able to predict Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) vibration levels at locations in the vicinity of the blast site. Such predictive capability enables the engineer to design blasts so as to ensure that ground vibrations can be kept within acceptable levels. The objective of this project was to analyse data obtained from the ground vibration monitoring program undertaken during the drill and blast excavation of a hard rock tunnel in Central England. Seismograph recordings of tunnel blasts contain a vast amount of information that cannot possibly be expressed using a single PPV value. The main focus of the study was to investigate whether predictive capability could be improved by using scaled distance models derived for selected PPV components relating to specific detonator timings in a given tunnel round. This study has established a method of analysis that can unlock this information for predictive purposes. By permitting the extraction of sub-event Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) values and allowing Scaled Distance (SD) models to be derived for individual period numbers or groups of period numbers, the method has the potential to vastly improve PPV prediction from tunnel blasting. The method established could also help diagnose blasting problems and help target blast design modifications, resulting in improved efficiency and excavation rates.

The Finnish Defence Forces Technical Research Centre (PVTT) studied the effect of shape of boost-er to its ability to ignite insensitive (IM) plastic bonded explosive (PBX). Therefore an explosive fac-tory produced 20 insensitive (IM) plastic bonded explosive (PBX) charges for the tests. The mass of each of the charges was exactly 9.2 kg (20.3 lb). The charges were equipped by two different type of boosters; RDX and PETN. Both the explosives contained some parts of plasticizers. The weight of all the boosters was exactly 300 g (0.66lb). On the bases of their shape, the boosters were also divid-ed into two different groups, cylindrical and “pancake”. In the middle of the “pancakes” there was also shaped a small cone in such away that the detonation could accelerate to its full speed after the charge was ignited. Soviet precursors to Cunningham’s Kuz-Ram model from 1983 are described. They are rooted in the mean fragment size and Rosin-Rammler (RR) fits to sieving data and rely on approximations. Three versions of Kuz-Ram model are presented and all three are de facto based on the median fragment size x50, even if the term mean is used in the papers. This discrepancy caused Spathis in 2004 to suggest a correction procedure for the Kuz-Ram rock factor A, which was said to explain some of the missing fines in the model. This correction, while applicable to Cunningham’s 1983 paper, does not apply to his 1987 paper in which he presents his own A factor. Common fixes of the Kuz-Ram model’s fines issue are fragmentation models where the fines are mainly generated in a crushed zone around a blast hole. This is contradicted by careful model blasting tests. The lack of a largest block size in the RR function may lead to spurious values of the uniformity coefficient n, e.g. in conjunction with image based fragmentation measurements or crusher modeling. These issues may be solved by using the transformed RR function, which has a largest block size xmax or its replacement by the Swebrec function such as in the KCO model.

The recent drop in the value of the South African Rand has resulted in an increased export value for South African coal and has lead to new coal reserves becoming available for mining. Very often these reserves are in close proximity to existing structures and utilities thus calling for stringent blast control measures to keep the risk of vibration, air blast and fly rock damage to a minimum.

The mining industry is in the midst of dramatic change. Mining activities are moving from industrialized first world countries (Canada, Australia, and the United States) to the third world. This shift is occurring due to depleted reserves, tough environmental standards, and expensive labor in traditional mining countries. During a recent trip to South Africa, I was asked, owing to my educational background in economics and an international involvement in drilling and blasting, what changes could be anticipated in third world blasting practices as labor costs increase. It is from that beginning that this presentation has evolved.

Very few records seem to have been kept as to the cost of such work, and although it is difficult for this reason, to set a fair price for breaking up and handling boulders of various sizes, yet the cost of this detail work enters very materially into the cost of solid rock excavation. Recent developments in hardware and software have made accurate measurement of Underground Face (Development) Drilling a reality. New and compact laser profiling equipment makes it possible to measure drilled material left on the face as well as the actual tracks of the holes drilled in the rounds. Utilization of these available technologies makes it possible to correctly define the drilling accuracy and the blasting pull. Through the use of actual face round measurements, I will show the level of definition and amount of information that can be collected.

The purpose of this paper is to identify and examine alternative methods (other than shovel/truck stripping) of effecting the pre-stripping of consolidated overburden, in conjunction with dragline stripping operations, at surface coal mines. The analysis will be case study oriented with practical mining considerations and comparative economics being evaluated. Alternatives that will be examined include blast casting, dozer push, and multiple pass dragline sequences.

With the aim of a clearer understanding of the applicability of existing empirical equations for blast induced ground vibration, an investigation has been conducted on three mostly applied forms of such equations. The effect of explosive type on the applicability of these equations has been assessed by analysing 44 sets of data produced by using two types of explosives, namely ANFO and slurry explosive, in an open pit coal mine. The analysis of the data has revealed that the type of explosive affects the applicability of the criteria of the three equations. All three criteria have better correlation with the data of shots in which ANFO was used than the shots with slurry explosive. However, the applicability of one of the criteria is reduced, by far, only by replacing ANFO with slurry explosive for the same ground conditions. It was also found that one of the parameters of these criteria (i.e. “k”) is significantly sensitive to the type of explosive in all the three equations. The degree of influence to the values of “k” obtained by the variation of explosive from ANFO to slurry explosive in the three equations is 76.3%, 811% and 39%. This implies that “k” is not only dependant on ground conditions, as stated in most previous publications, but is also strongly a function of the type of explosive.
