The following procedure was used to determine cut-off grades: define the orebody profile; plan the stope layout and quantify the work involved; formulate equipment-performance norms; calculate unit costs; input process recoveries and metal prices; and calculate the cut-off grade. Use of the method is illustrated using data from a copper mining complex in India. Results from the study led to the following conclusions for underground mines in general. Cut-off dependent costs vary significantly with the stoping method employed, orebody thickness, the degree of mechanisation and the working efficiencies of the workforce and equipment. This applies even within the same deposit. Sub-level stoping and its variants can be operated at a lower cut-off grade than cut-and-fill and its variants. Thinner orebodies affect cut-off grades adversely, but with thinner orebodies very little further reduction in cut-off grade can be achieved once a certain minimum width has been exceeded. For the same stoping method and in the same mine the cut-off grade varies with the degree of mechanisation. Labour-intensive methods require higher cut-off grades. An allowance for working efficiency should be made when calculating cut-off grades. Higher process recoveries allow a significant lowering of cut-off grades

The surface chemistry of particulates from mineral processing streams can be determined by laser-probe microanalysis. The small area of analysis (2-30 micrometres) enables the surfaces of individual grains to be characterised. Conclusions are based on data acquired from a statistically significant number of grains of a given type. Maps showing the distribution of elements on the surface of mineral particulates can be obtained by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. The importance of such analyses in understanding the response of minerals to beneficiation practices is discussed with reference to three examples. The first relates to the loss of selectivity in the differential flotation of a base-metal ore, the second to the different flotabilities of coarse- and fine-grained pentlandite from a Cu-Ni ore and the third concerns the preg-robbing effects of organic matter in a carbonaceous gold ore.

"Study of gravity concentrates from the gold-recovery circuit of the Kambalda nickel mill has enabled an assessment to be made of the nature, relative abundance and compositional variability of platinum group element (PGE) minerals and other associated heavy minerals that are present in the Kambalda nickel deposits. The major platinum minerals are sperrylite, PtAs2, and nioncheite, (Pt. Pd, Ni)(Te, Bi)2, and the major palladium minerals are sudburvite, (Pd, Pt, Ni)(Sb, Te, Bi), stibiopalladinite, Pd6Sb2, and palladoarsenide, Pd2 (As, Sb), together with a palladium antimonide and a palladium arsenide that have not been fully characterized. Palladian melonites, which contain up to 10 wt% Pd, and palladian nickeline are also important PGE hosts. Sperrylite and sudburyite are by far the most abundant discrete minerals in the gravity concentrates.Gold occurs as argentian, cuprian and nickeloan—cuprian gold, and as the tellurides calaverite, petzite and auriferous hessite. Silver is present in petzite, hessite and volynskite. Other rare phases contained in the gravity concentrates include native bismuth, altaite, frohbergite, breithauptite, gersdorffite, parkerite, scheelite, tantalite, cassiterite, rutile, bunsenite, gahnite, barite and uvarovite.Descriptions of in-situ occurrences of PGE minerals at Kambalda are rare. Michenerite, PdBiTe, and testibiopalladite, PdSbTe, have been described from a telluride-rich quartz-carbonate vein that intersects massive sulphide ore in Lunnon Shoot. Moncheite has been observed in chalcopyrite-rich stringers, and sudburyite occurs as inclusions in nickeline in a quartz- carbonate veinlet. No discrete PGE minerals have been found within the massive and matrix ore zones in the Kambalda ore- shoots, and the geochemical distribution of PGE suggests that the formation of discrete PGE phases may be related to post- magmatic processes—in particular, metamorphic segregation of sulphides, and the interaction of the ore sulphides, containing PGE in solid solution, with younger hydrothermal fluids. This has led to local redistribution of the PGE, with concentration in footwall stringers and veins, and in reaction zones."

The mineralisation is associated with a composite diorite to quartz monzonite stock of Permian to Triassic age that intrudes Devonian carbonate strata. In the intrusive rocks it is associated with potassic alteration and in the carbonate wall rocks it is hosted by prograde garnet-rich and retrograde epidote-rich skarn. Both porphyry and skarn mineralisation include disseminated and fracture-controlled mineralisation, the latter probably accounting for the major part of the contained minerals. Copper, gold, silver and zinc are strongly positively correlated within the mineralised zones, although there are small differences in metal ratios between the different ore types; molybdenum appears to be negatively correlated with copper and gold. Ore minerals include chalcopyrite, magnetite and pyrite in porphyry-type mineralisation and bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, magnetite and lesser haematite in skarn.

Following two years of laboratory research with bench scale reactors, a 9 m3 experimental process demonstration reactor was installed at Budelco's zinc refinery to treat their underlying groundwater. A 600-fold scale-up was successfully achieved. It has demonstrated that this anaerobic microbial process can remove a wide range of heavy metals and sulphate to the required levels. Extended operation of the demonstration unit has shown that the process is robust, can withstand wide variations in feed composition, rapidly recovers from operational upsets and is easy to start up and shut down. The metal sludge produced can be processed in a metal refinery to recover both metals and sulphur.

An algorithm is proposed for updating the probability of slope failure on the basis of sequential testing using Bayesian probability theory. The approach is novel and computationally straightforward since, unlike other methods, updating of the probability of failure is carried out directly. This is because the probability is treated as a random variable whereas other methods have considered it as a purely deterministic value or as a function of shear strength parameters that are updated individually. The prior information required for the Bayesian analysis is obtained by a conventional probabilistic analysis. An exponential distribution is then used for the probability of failure, applying the principle of maximum entropy. This distribution is continually updated for individual slope cells, where repetitive excavation creates several such cells and a corresponding series of Bayesian estimates of the probability of failure is obtained. The approach is applicable to most simulations but there are limitations on its use. A more mathematically rigorous refinement using the beta distribution is currently under development

The previous papers have been concerned only with the atmospheric oxidation of coals from the Barnsley Seam, for which it has been shown that an adequate explanation of the origin and nature of gob-fires can be based on the reaction between the coal itself and the oxygen of the air without the intervention of any other substance. It becomes of importance, therefore, to ascertain how far a similar explanation will hold good for spontaneous heating in other seams, and with this object in view samples including anthracite and lignite have been taken from a considerable number of pits in different parts of the UK (south Wales, Northumberland and Durham, north Staffordshire, Portrush and Ayrshire), some liable to fire, others not. There is abundant evidence to support the commonly-accepted view that spontaneous heating is due to the heat evolved during the absorption of oxygen from the air by coal or pyrites. The quantity of heat produced by the reaction has been measured and it has been shown that the observed rate of heating of a sample of coal agrees with the rate calculated from the heat of reaction and the rate of absorption of oxygen

Natural graphite is used in refractories, which accounts for ca. 20% of global demand and is forecast to grow by 2-4%/a to 2020, while the largest growth in demand (increases of 10-15%/a) is estimated to come from its application in anodes for lithium-ion batteries, especially those in hybrid electric vehicles. In 1991 the problems of water inflow at the mine were addressed by a three-phase study. A three-dimensional finite-element computer code, CFEST (Coupled Fluid, Energy and Solute Transport), was used to model the system of groundwater flow around the mine, allowing assessment of the nature of the hydrological regime and of the various recharge mechanisms and sources of inflow. A regional (111 km2) model was used to simulate conditions of low to average mine inflow and provide boundary conditions for the subsequent local (16.8 km2) model. The regional model produced inflows of 0.26 m3/s and the local model 0.25 m3/s. With the use of constant head conditions to simulate a saturated flood plain along the Gays River and on doubling the rate of surface recharge, the local model produced a maximum mine inflow of 0.255 m3/s, in contrast to a measured peak mine inflow of 0.37 m3/s. The discrepancy suggests that during periods of high river level surface water gains access to features with high permeability, such as sinkholes, that may be connected directly or indirectly to the mine workings. Improved simulation of high inflow conditions can probably be achieved by determining the hydraulic conductivity of the river-bed and flood-plain sediments and modelling known sinkholes as discrete units. Possibilities for controlling the amount of inflow to the mine include sealing the flood plain with dykes, checking regularly for new sinkholes, which should be filled and capped, maintaining adequate mine drainage, and monitoring well levels and pressures on a continuous basis.

"Synorogenic mafic intrusions are a common feature of the northern Appalachians. Two sulphide-bearing intrusions in central Maine that have been investigated revealed a number of important features that illustrate sulphide-silicate interaction that relates to magmatic sulphides. The Moxie Pluton is a large mafic intrusion emplaced during the Devonian Acadian orogeny. The Katahdin gabbro is a small mafic body that is probably genetically and temporally related to the Moxie Pluton. Both intrusions were formed bv the intrusion of variably fractionated magmas into irregular chambers and feeder zones. The southern half of the Moxie Pluton contains three small sulphide accumulations, whereas the Katahdin gabbro hosts a large, predominantly massive, sulphide body. Textural evidence clearly documents the magmatic origin of these sulphides.The three Moxie Pluton sulphide bodies are located at or very close to the intersection between the intrusion and the sulphidebearing Hildreths Formation. Sulphur assimilation, suggested by this relationship, is supported by the isotopically light (634S = —8 to —25) and the selenium-poor (S/Se - 25 000-48 000) character of the Moxie sulphides and correlation with the Hildreths Formation sulphides (S34S = —25, S/Se = 25 000-48 000). Isotopically light sulphur (534S = —20 to —21) and high S/Se ratios indicate that the majority of sulphur in the Katahdin sulphide body was also derived from an unexposed country rock source. The volume of sulphide in this example illustrates the potential efficiency of the sulphur assimilation process—so efficient in this case that marked dilution of the economic chalcophile elements resulted from the addition of so much external sulphur.The three Moxie Pluton sulphide occurrences are all impoverished in Ni and Cu (1.87-0.44% Ni; 0.72—0.32% Cu in massive sulphide), but contain normal Co contents (0.22-0.13%) relative to typical magmatic sulphides. The Katahdin sulphides show a greater Ni and Cu impoverishment (0.2% Ni; 0.1% Cu in massive sulphide) with similar Co (0.17%). The Ni content of the Moxie Pluton olivines document the fractional removal of sulphides during crystallization of the host magma, which resulted in the progressive depletion of the chalcophile metals in this magma. Modelling that involved the fractional crystallization of the magma coupled with the fractional removal of a specified proportion of sulphide has successfully duplicated the Moxie Pluton sulphide compositions. A similar magmatic model has been postulated for the Katahdin sulphides with a greater degree of sulphide fractionation. This latter model is again supported by extremely low Ni/forsterite ratios in olivines, though the compositional range is insufficient to document fractionation. These magmatic models are not unique, but they provide a relatively constrained and consistent explanation for the sulphide compositions.The Ni contents of olivines are the most important indicator of sulphide-silicate interaction in mafic magmas and have exploration potential. They provide a means of assessing the timing and extent of sulphur saturation in an intrusion and are a guide to the Ni content of a sulphide accumulation in equilibrium with olivine. In the Maine examples they provide strong evidence of the magmatic origin of the sulphide accumulations and justification for magmatic modelling."

An image analysis technique has been used in the assessment of subsurface fracture levels in the context of water inflow into longwall mine workings. The technique was used to analyse results from physical modelling which are represented by black and white photographs taken directly from the model tests. Binary images of fracture patterns are obtained by scanning the photographs with an image analyser coupled to a video camera. The images are manipulated by a C program which allows them to be processed in vertical and horizontal directions and filtered to differentiate quantitatively between vertical and horizontal fracture intensities. The fracture density distributions provide a valuable database for further numerical and statistical analysis. This allows assessment in terms of water inflow into the excavation. A comprehensive image analysis was undertaken on several extraction models. Results indicate that extraction thickness has a significant effect on the fracture pattern and the fracture density distributions. The results can be used to adapt model findings to situations with a range of extraction thicknesses. The technique has allowed improvement in image enhancement and in the interpretation of model results. In particular, a qualitative comparison between different models is possible.

This step was found to be the chloridisation of the oxide copper minerals in the ore. The link between the rate of chloridisation and the overall rate of segregation is demonstrated experimentally. Vapour pressures of sulphur have been measured over the temperature range 340-1039°C by means of boiling-point measurements, an internally heated pressure vessel being employed with argon as the pressure medium. The results are expressed satisfactorily by a four-term pressure-temperature relation. At the cited critical temperature of 1040°C the calculated critical pressure is 204 atm. From the pressure-temperature relation and available thermal data for the vapour, the approximate composition of the saturated vapour in terms of the various molecular species has been derived for the critical point

Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan. The conclusions reached in this paper may be summarized briefly as follows: (1) The method of estimating moisture in coal by determining the loss in weight of a sample heated to 105°-110° Cent, in an air-bath for an hour is untrustworthy, the results so obtained being too low. (2) Dried coal has a very considerable power of absorbing moisture, and a sample, after being dried, must be protected instantly if it is to remain free from moisture. (3) A fairly accurate estimation may be made by heating the coal in a current of dry air at 105° to 110° Cent., and collecting the moisture evolved. (4) In cases in which it is proposed to use the dried coal for any further experiments, the drying must be done in the absence of oxygen, and this can be done simply and quickly by the vacuum method now described

This paper has formulated the methods, both medical and engineering, for the control of pneumokoniosis in the haematite-mining industry in West Cumberland, but this is only part of a general service to improve the lot of the worker in these mines, to make him a better and happier workman, and to permit him to enjoy his work and leisure in comfort and good health. This organization has now been functioning for more than ten years and the results are indeed heartening, but it is only as a result of constant vigilance from the mining and medical point of view that such a plan can operate efficiently. The human element and its full understanding is by no means the least of the problems.
