Recent focus by terrestrial mineral explorers (and investors) on cobalt has increasingly highlighted the future critical need for this metal, with new-age batteries being the primary utilisation. We present an overview of the world’s current terrestrial cobalt resources and put this in perspective of currently known seabed resources, particularly polymetallic nodule and crust deposits. We focus on comparison of the key exploration, development and exploitation risks for such deposits, and provide a framework for financial evaluation and appraisal.

The University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre (UMRC) has a longstanding research reputation in mining research, with particular expertise in mining systems, mining geomechanics and excavation engineering. The UMRC is now focusing this expertise on the potential of mining Seafloor Massive Sulphides (SMS). The UMRC has initiated a three-year research project that will identify and examine the requirements to effectively and efficiently mine SMS deposits. The major aims of this project are: ? To develop an understanding of the geomechanical characteristics and local physical environmental conditions associated with a ?typical? SMS deposit. ? To develop and evaluate a range of both conventional and innovative excavation processes for mining SMS deposits, and define the engineering parameters required for each extraction option, and ? To identify the materials handling and lifting requirements of the ?mined? SMS material, and the possible integration of the lifting system with the excavation processes considered.

Ferromanganese crust samples collected from Central Pacific sea-mount areas became of special interest after surprisingly high nobel metal contents have been analyzed. Hydrogenetic crust growth is controlled by the conditions of the oceanic water column. Thicker encrustations show two crust generations of different age ranges. The mean values of the chemical composition state that the older generation is richer in P, Ca, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pt and depleted in Fe, Ti, Co, Al, and Si. The differences apparently indicate a distinct change of the geochemical environment. The Pt concentrations vary up to 1800 ppb and do not clearly correlate to one of the other metals. This might indicate a bond of multiple nature. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the Pt concentrations in ferromanganese samples. Our models consider seawater and cosmic spherules as responsible Pt sources. In seawater the main species of dissolved Pt probably exist as the doubly negatively charged tetrachloro-complex. A precipitation of Pt in seawater may take place if the chloro-complex is decomposed by reduction of pt2+ to pt0. On the other hand, the Mn02 precipitation is caused by an oxidation of Mn2+ which is supplied from the oxygen-minimum zone. On the western continental shelf of southern Africa diamonds derived from onshore sources are concentrated in gravels within drowned terrestrial and marine geomorphological features. First discovered offshore in the late 1950's, they are known to exist for about 1400 km along the Namibian and South African coast in water depths of up to 200 m. Shallow water operations yielded 1.5 Mct during the decade ending 1970 when De Beers acquired a majority of the offshore leases and commenced a 15 year exploration program. Deeper water and the prevailing sea conditions required the development of new, unique, marine mining equipment. The first large scale mining production of 22 kct was achieved by De Beers in 1989 with an output of 22 kct. Annual marine output from all sources now exceeds 0.6 Mct worth some US.$ 170 M, and rising to 0.7-0.8 Mct for 1998. Exploration has also been taking place in the waters of West Africa, Australia, and Indonesia. Exploration is by means of high resolution geophysics followed by sampling using a variety of drills, airlifts and seabed-mounted machines which imitate the eventual mining process. Surveying is now probing depths of 500 m. Smaller scale mining by several junior companies has traditionally involved diving and airlift systems. Increasingly, however, they are adopting different and improved techniques which to date have been employed only by De Beers Marine as contractor to Namdeb. Marine exploration and unit mining costs are high compared to those applicable to alluvial deposits onshore. By 1996 the total development costs incurred by De Beers alone reportedly had exceeded US.$ 500 M. However, the financial rewards are commen-surate because of the higher recovered grades. The operations are not without risk for the total of nearly 10 large and medium scale production vessels deployed by various organisations. The greatest shortfalls are experienced in the estimated throughput, not the grade.

"This study presents the first catalogue of marine mineral deposits and energy resources along the continental margin of Spain. Aggregates, oil and gas and metalliferous mineral areas have been defined and mapped. The catalogue, implemented in a geographic information system (GIS), is conceived as a first national database within the European network, which is being built as part of the EMODnet-Geology project. It comprises 8 types of mineral and energy resources for the Spanish margins: aggregates, hydrocarbons, evaporites, placer deposits, phosphorites, polymetallic sulfides, polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Figures 1 and 2). The catalogue stores a total of 409 marine mineral deposits and compiles information such as name, deposit type, main morphology, main minerals, setting or area extent for each mineral deposit. By number of deposits compiled, the aggregates are the most abundant (286) followed by hydrocarbons (62), cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (32), evaporites (9), placer deposits (8), phosphorites (5), polymetallic nodules (4) and polymetallic sulphide deposits (3). Considering the total extension, hydrocarbons (32,386 km2) and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (24,951 km2) represent the biggest areas.The Geological Survey of Spain (IGME) is developing a new tool in the catalogue, according the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Database parameters, for individual samples on each ferromanganese deposit. The database includes an extensive collection of records that comprise five information groups: general cruise and sample data, physical properties, mineralogy, geochemistry and acronyms used. New attributes have been incorporated, in example: geophysical, sedimentological and petrological data in the deposit area, sample weight, porosity, morphology, textural and structural features, geochemistry of major, minor and trace elements (included REEs and PGEs) and supplementary cruise and laboratory reports. This new database complements the EMODnet-Geology project minerals catalogue, offering a deeper level of information for the areas with major potential for mineral or energy resources as they are the Canary Island Seamount Province, the West Margin of Galicia and the Gulf of Cadiz."

Environmental considerations are a key driver within the marine mining consenting process across different national and international legislative regimes and are critical in shaping the global public perception of the industry. As a result, it is vital that mining companies seeking to operate within marine environments establish a robust understanding of the sensitivities of the seabed environments in which they are active, the impacts of their activities and the ability of the environment to recover from these impacts. The significant risks of failing to do so include an inability to either obtain or maintain operating permits. The risks can be mitigated by the common application of existing seabed biological expertise in baseline assessment and monitoring. The key ingredients of a fit-for-purpose, cost-effective seabed ecological assessment include early consideration of ecological issues within the project life-cycle through undertaking detailed desk-top studies as-wellas the multiple-use of data that have been acquired as a consequence of prospecting processes, with such data including remote acoustic data, seabed imagery and sediment samples. These data can be used to inform the design of robust benthic baseline surveys which provide adequate information on the ecological character of the environment in question and habitats and species of conservation importance - decreasing project risk and increasing the likelihood of securing consent.

The resources and reserves calculation of marine diamond deposits should be based on a systematic sampling grid. The distribution of the sample grade results tends to be very skew and has a large variance. A bias is easily introduced due to the fact that the grade distribution of the samples is very different from the grades of the area of influence. The temptation is always there to extrapolate the highest grade samples simply to their area of influence. If this is done, the higher grade areas will be systematically overestimated, while the lower grade areas will be underestimated. Such a bias should surely be avoided by weighing the sample grades in such a way with their neighbours, so that the estimated grades have a similar distribution as the grades of the blocks. The grade distribution of small mining blocks tend to be lognormal-like. If the coefficient of variation is known, i.e. the standard deviation divided by the mean, then the grade distribution of the small mining blocks is relatively well-defined. The distribution of the diamonds within the deposits can be simulated, based on the histogram of the sample results and on the semivariogram. The diamonds tend to cluster in trapsites. From the semivariogram and the histogram, the average size and spacing between trapsites, and the grade distribution within the trapsites, can be calculated using the model of the General Family of Discrete Distributions. Using such a simulated deposit, the grade distribution for different block sizes can be obtained. The grade distributions become more lognormal-like with increasing block sizes, as the trapsite effect is reduced.

In early 1990s, the Korean government has launched a deep-sea research program to secure the stable long-term supply of strategic metallic minerals including Cr, Cu and Ni. Through the pioneering surveys, Korea registered 150,000 km2 of Mn-nodule field in the Clarion-Clipperton area, the NE equatorial Pacific to the international sea-bed authority (ISA) in 1994. Following the ISA exploration code, the final exclusive exploration area of 75,000 Km2 was assigned in 2002, based on results of eight-year researches of chemicophysical properties of nodules, bottom profiles and sediment properties. Since that time, environmental studies, mining technical developments including robot miner and lifting system and establishment of smelting systems were accompanied with the detailed geophysical studies to decipher the priori mining area until 2009. Major points of the recent Korea Mn-nodule program are deployed on a commercial scale until 2015. In order to meet the goals, detailed 25,000 scaled mining maps in the priori area will be prepared, which can provide operation roots of the miner. In addition, an environmental-friendly mining strategy will be pursued based on the environmental impact test and environmental monitoring.

The chemical composition of the nodules varies with the type of manganese minerals and the size and characteristics of their nucleus, but those who have an economic interest have the following composition: Mn 29%, Fe 6% Si 5%, Al 3%, Ni 1.4%, Cu 1.3%, Co 0.25%, Na 1.5%, Ca 1.5%, Mg 0.5%, K 0.5%, Ti 0.2 0.2% and Ba 0.2% (Morgan, 2000; ISA, 2002). The Pacific Rim is an area of abundant occurrence of polymetallic nodules (Glasby et al., 1980; Morgan, 2000). According to these authors, the Pacific sea floor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is one of the most interesting areas in regard to the genesis of polymetallic nodules. Their abundance in the ocean floor is very variable, as there are places where they cover more than 70% of the ocean floor. The nodules can be found at any depth, but the highest concentrations are between 4000 and 6000m (Morgan et al., 1993). In studies conducted in the EEZ of the Mexican Pacific are those made within the project "Research on the origin, process and distribution of minerals in the Pacific ocean floor in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico". Within this project Rosales (1989) conducted studies on the origin, process and distribution of polymetallic nodules, finding that a number of processes give origin to nodules, being diagenesis one of the main mechanisms of elements that contribute to the nodules. Besides hydrothermal processes that are carried near the East Pacific Rise at 21° N, inputs are contributing to the nodules metallic elements and sediments, especially in regions close to the dorsal, as a greater influence hydrogenetic processes occurs westward (Rosales and Carranza, 1990). In 1993, after cruise MIMAR II, Carranza and Rosales refer that metals such as Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn and Ba may have a relationship with the East Pacific hydrothermal activity and sea currents carry these metals in solution to the Clarion-Clipperton fracture area, where there are hydrogenic metals sources (Al, Fe and Mn).

Mining the deep ocean by the year 2000 may seem far fetched. The year 2000 is but a decade away, a scant 10 years. Remember, the youngsters of today will grow up in a little more than a decade and rebut the wisdom of the ages, especially the traditions of their elders. Rude perhaps, but none the less a fact of life. Ocean mining exhibits many of these same traits. We should all brace ourselves for some rude shifts in our rapidly moving society. Major shifts in economics, politics, and social orders are the rule of the day. Communism is in retreat, our own economic structures chaotic. So in this moment of cataclysmic change, a shift in the international market place of mineral resources should not be a great surprise.

The face of mining as we know is changing as mining companies all over the globe realize the reality of accessing the vast mineral wealth contained on, and under, our ocean floors. With some land based mineral deposits being fully exploited across the world, deep sea mining is set to revolutionize global approaches to the search for precious metals and other sought after minerals. Previously, the financial and technological implications of deep sea mining outweighed the benefits of access to the mineral rich deposits identified all around the world. The process of marine diamond mining off the west coast of southern Africa started in the late 1950s, and subsequently continued by De Beers to the present day, has proven to be an excellent proving ground for the development of technology and mining systems that ensure a sustainable and financially viable business.

This paper presents the results of theoretical investigations of the energy requirements of the hydraulic lifting of mined materials from the seabed to the sea surface in the deep-sea mining of solid minerals such as manganese nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the Pacific, situated on the sea floor in water depths of 4,500 m or more. The principal element of the developed underwater transport system is the Underwater Chamber, which is connected by flexible pipeline to a mining machine that gathers nodules from the seabed, mixes them with seawater, and feeds them into a flexible pipeline. In this paper, we discuss the question of the optimum water depth for placement of the Chamber, the interior of which is designed to maintain a 1-atmosphere pressure. We present a method for calculating this depth as it relates to the mechanical characteristics of solid particles, the shapes and size distributions of the particles, particle and slurry density, and other properties. These investigations were carried out in hydro-transport laboratory of the Saint-Petersburg Mining Institute and the hydraulic laboratory of Faculty Environmental Engineering in Wroclaw Agricultural University. Active development of the exploration and further exploitation of deep-sea minerals requires special emphasis on the protection of the marine environment. The complexity of this subject lies in the fact that potential impact and effects of future mining activity are not completely known. One of the main sources of potential impact near the seafloor, as it expected, would be a generation of sediment plumes, their dispersion and redeposition of sediment. Meanwhile, their dimensions, rates of dispersion and redeposition are a big issue. Other plumes are expected in the surface layer as a result of discharges of processing waters and particles after sorting on board of mining vessel, and their features are also not clear. At the same time, understanding of these aspects would be crucial for definition of environment impact area, delineation and designation of different types of protected areas (Areas of Particular Environmental Interest, Impact and Preservation Reference Zones) and future assessment of environmental impacts. Attempts to address these issues demonstrated wide variations between the data of field experiments on the one hand and the results of analytical and numerical models on the other. According to in situ measurements, plumes were detected at a distance vary from one to less than 20 km [e.g., Burns et al., 1980; Sharma et al., 2001; Nautilus Minerals, 2008 etc.], whilst some models show results up to 100 km [Rolinski S. et al., 2001] and more. It seemed that results of in-situ experiments are preferable, but they were not many indeed. However, these data were used in different investigations rather widely, but their focus, as far as we know, was not on the matters related directly with plumes.

Co-rich hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts are typical marine interface products of growth processes taking place on sediment-free substrate rocks on the seafloor. They grow very slowly and preferentially in water depths below the oxygen-minimum zone (OMZ) and have so far been found even in water depths of up to more than 5000 m, i.e. also below the calcite compensation depth (CCD); these deep ferromanganese crusts are particularly rich in Fe. It is assumed that the O2-minimum zone is the most important source layer of dissolved manganese, the decomposition of fecal pellets here also contributes to this Mn-budget. The process of hydrogenetic precipitation is basically an inorganic colloidal-chemical as well as a surface-chemical mechanism. Microbial mediations can be assumed, in particular since steps of redox-reactions are involved. The two main components of the hydrogenetic substance are hydrated d-MnO2 (vernadite) and x-ray amorphous Fe-oxyhydroxide, both of which are intimately intergrown with each other forming the extremely fine-grained hydrous oxidic material. In seawater, elements occur as dissolved hydrated ions or as inorganic as well as organic complexes which, in general, have either a positive or a negative surface charge depending on the pH of the respective marine environment. These complexes form hydrated colloids that interact with each other or with other dissolved hydrous metal ions. The main agent to oxidize the dissolved Mn2+ ions is oxygen, transported upwards from deeper water by turbulent eddy diffusion and turbulent rise processes at seamount slopes.

Nautilus Minerals is exploring for high-grade gold, silver, copper, and zinc-rich submarine massive sulphide deposits (SMS) within the territorial waters of the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea. Work to date has shown that these systems contain spectacularly high metal grades. To date a total of 88 surface sulphide grab samples have been collected from Nautilus’ Solwara 1 Prospect within EL 1196 in the Manus Basin, returning average grades of 15.5 g/t gold, 191g/t silver, 10.8% copper, and 4.7% Zn. Drilling in January/February 2006 confirmed the presence of this high grade system, with sulphide intersections up to 19m below the sea floor, with a best intersection of 11.6m at 9.1 g/t Au and 13.1% Cu.

The Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center has recently completed field tests of the percussion- waterlift drill and the vibracore/vibralift convertible drill. The two systems have been modified from existing drills to increase their effectiveness and flexibility for nearshore minerals exploration. Originally the percussion-waterlift drill was designed for iand based operations, but it has been modified for use in protected shallow water areas. This drill is easily maintained, inexpensive to construct and operate, and is able to accurately recover representative samples from a variety of sedimentary deposits. Sampling is accomplished using either a reverse circulation method for the recovery of a slurry of sediment cuttings and water or employing a thin walled "Shelby tube" to core zones of interest. The vibracore/vibralift convertible drill is a modification of the remote placer drill (RPD). By combining these drills into one convertible system, it is possible to recover continuous cores of unconsolidated fine-grained sediments (vibracore), a slurry of clay to gravel size sediments over 1.0 meter intervals (vibralift), and to sample sedimentary material in environments where indurated

This is a part of the joint KIGAM-GNS-NIWA 3-year study of ferromanganese nodules on the Campbell Drift, east of Campbell Plateau to determine age distribution, growth rates and geochemical evolution in relation to geographic setting. During the research voyage SAA3 by R/V Tangaroa (TAN 9909) in July-August 1999, seafloor sampling and camera towing were conducted along the two transects across the known flow path of the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) perpendicular to the lowermost margin of the Campbell Plateau and Bollons Seamount. The four major nodule facies, SHH (slope hydrogenetic nodules with high density), AHH (abyssal hydrogenetic nodules with high density), ADH (abyssal diagenetic nodules with high density), and ADL (abyssal diagenetic nodules with low density) were identified. Two additional minor nodule facies, SIB (slope irregular nodules with ice-rafted boulders) and SHB (slope hydrogenetic nodules with boulders and crust), of localized distributions are also identified.

"With the expansion of “green” energy technologies, the demand for the critical raw materials required to sustain this growth is increasing. Many E-tech elements, including tellurium (Te) and rare earth elements (REEs), suffer from high supply shortage risk and the need for more diversified metal supply routes is driving research into alternative resources. Hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts, seafloor deposits of Fe- and Mnoxyhydroxides that form from the direct precipitation from seawater, present a potentially important future source of E-tech elements. With growing interest in the potential wealth of these deposits and the issuing of permits for deep-sea mining and exploration, more work is underway to understand the nature of ferromanganese crust deposits, their elemental concentrations and distributions, and the potential impacts of mining activities.This research focusses on the formation of ferromanganese crust deposits and processes that control the extreme enrichment of elements such as Te, Co and REEs. The crusts were systematically sampled and mapped between ~ 1000 – 4000 m depths using ROV ISIS, from a range of environments, substrates and morphologies from Tropic Seamount (NE Atlantic) in order to determine the seamount-scale factors that control major and trace elemental concentration variations. These factors include depth, surface roughness and micro-bathymetry, location relative to long-term mean current direction and energy, influence of tidal energy dispersion across the seamount, sediment supply, substrate lithology, biological productivity and phosphatisation. The study analyses trace-element characteristics of 100 ferromanganese crust samples alongside standard reference materials NOD-A-1 and NOD-P-1 (US Geological Survey manganese nodules). At this initial stage, we report results from whole rock acid digestion and ICP-MS analyses."

Deep sea mining operations by nature are performed (or planned) in challenging environments. Another typifying characteristic of deep sea mining operations is the relatively high investment cost. This combination challenges engineers to design configurations able to mine the desired production rate in an efficient way. As design choices made for individual systems impact other parts of the system, it is vital to follow an integral approach to establish the one optimal overall system. Dredging and especially dredge mining learns that the excavation system, the slurry transportation system and the processing plant cannot be considered as individual sub-systems. These systems in any ?traditional dredge mining? operation interrelate to such extend that they must be developed towards an integral solution. The nominal production, peak production and variability of these figures must match for all subsystems in the overall mining system to optimize the mining efficiency. We call this the ?game of capacities?.
