"Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates two mines; one open pit (No. 6) and one underground (No. 12), approximately 20 miles south-west of Bathurst, New Brunswick. Both are massive sulphide deposits containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. The No. 12 property began operation in 1963 and is presently being mined at a rate of 3600 tons per day underground and is in the completion stages of an expansion to achieve 11,000 tons per day underground by the end of 1930.Originally at Brunswick Mining, acid mine drainage was added to tailings and neutralized by an excess of lime in the tailings. A conventional recycle system was established with a biostabilization pond for the treatment of thiosalts, a liming station and sludge settling area for neutralization of acidic water and a final reclaim pond with a pumping station for reclaim water.We found that not more than one third of the reclaim water could be used as it upset the flotation circuit every time it was used. It was established that the mine water and surface drainage were the cause due to oils and detergents in the water. It was also found that the biostabilization pond method Cf thiosalt treatment was not efficient for year round operation in our climate.In 1974, we reviewed the problems and began a 3 phase program to control effluents from the property:"

The paper explores the substance, circumstances and significance of the Whelpley and Storer Copper Process. The 1866 Whelpley and Storer patent specified a process combining mechanical and chemical engineering. The process called for a down-drafting shaft furnace with a horizontal flue connected at the bottom of the shaft. Powdered sulphide ore was roasted in the shaft and then sent forward fully oxidized to a bath of sulphuric acid and/or calcium chloride. The “water furnace” was developed in Boston, at a time when the city was home to most Michigan copper mining companies. The process was field-tested at Quebec’s Harvey Hill copper mine. In 1865 James Douglas, Jr. took over management of the Harvey Hill mine with the challenge of saving the family investment. He needed a way to make money from low-grade sulphides. Through his relationship with chemist T. Sterry Hunt, Douglas learned of a possible way ahead using the process developed by Whelpley and Storer. The paper confirms the centrality of publications, meetings, and networking in the advancement of metallurgy. The process is of interest historically, as much as anything, because it is one of the pillars of James Douglas’ distinguished career in copper. INTRODUCTION At the 1866 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Buffalo, New York, T. Sterry Hunt (1826–1892) read a paper “On the Metallurgical System of Messrs. Whelpley and Storer.” The paper is part of a chain of events that constitute the foundation of James Douglas’ (1837–1918) success in the copper mining industry. To understand the career of Douglas over the early years of modern copper mining, we must necessarily start with Whelpley and Storer. Going back to Hunt’s paper, he concluded his remarks by asserting that the Whelpley and Storer Process was “capable of such wide and varied application, that it is probably destined to have a very important influence on the industry of the world” (Hunt, 1867a). He reached this conclusion reasoning that the process had overcome a critical metallurgical hurdle (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt, a geo-chemist in modern terms, recalled that the chemist of those years easily separated copper from “sulphuretted” ores by converting it to a soluble salt from which pure metal was precipitated by “an equivalent of iron.” The problem was to “…apply this principle in the working of copper ores on a great scale...” (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt noted that this very problem had “…engaged the attention of many metallurgists, and has given rise to various processes for obtaining copper by the moist way, many of which are nearly or quite perfect in their operation, but are lacking in practicability and cheapness” (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt thought Whelpley and Storer had overcome the low-grade sulphide hurdle with a commercially viable engineering breakthrough. Yet in the history of copper metallurgy, the process is missing. "A methodology was developed in the mid-1980’s to predict plant performance from standard laboratory flotation tests. The technique is based on a simple, empirical kinetics model, and is tailored for use by the practical metallurgist.To date the performance of more than 20 flotation plants has been predicted, including copper, lead, zinc, phosphate, pyrite, graphite, cassiterite, platinum, nickel and various slags. The method has successfully been used to predict and size four flotation plants directly from bench-scale laboratory flotation testwork. All have since been commissioned, and have performed as predicted.The technique has now received broad acceptance within the South African mining industry, for example in the last year alone it has been used to drive flowsheet development for at least seven new plants. It is also being used to assist in the optimisation of existing operating plants.The methodology is described in this paper and verification of the methodology is presented using case studies of porphyry, polymetallic and PGM operations.INTRODUCTIONThere is considerable interest these days in the use of modelling to simulate flotation circuits, for process design and plant optimisation purposes. Although these models are proving to be useful tools for plant design and optimisation, their complexity can make them cumbersome – expensive to use and difficult for metallurgists to visualise and mentally absorb, without a background in each specific technique. In “SUPASIM” no attempt is made to measure flotation fundamentals, rather to use empirical relationships between laboratory flotation kinetics and plant performance – relationships that hold up well to validation exercises as will be demonstrated later in this paper. Although not designed to be as comprehensive as other models, “SUPASIM” is easily understood by the operating metallurgist and can be quickly and easily applied."

SUMMARY RADIOACTIVE dynamite has been prepared by introducing a small amount of antimony-124 into the explosive. Test work is described on the effectiveness of this tracer, on radiation levels in its neighbourhood, and on different methods of .application. Factors determining the choice of isotope, amount of activity, and overall cost of this process are discussed. INTRODUCTION Instances are known in which dynamite remains unexploded in drill holes in mining operations. Usually such 'bootlegs' are easily located by inspection of the face and the powder is removed before subsequent drilling is started. Occasionally, however, serious accidents occur because workmen drill into an undetected piece of dynamite. In order to avoid such accidents it was suggested that a different method of location might be tied, such as that afforded by the use of radioactive tracers. This paper describes some experiments that were carried out under the auspices of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, with the active co-operation of Canadian Industries Ltd. and Canadian Refractories Ltd., to test the feasibility of such a scheme.

"This paper describes the recent pilot-plant work carried out on two alternative processes capable of producing an effluent containing less than 10 pCi/L total radium-226 activity and very close to 3 pCi/L dissolved radium-226. The processes incorporate coprecipitation of radium with barium sulphate by the addition of barium chloride in continuously stirred tank reactors followed by either chemical coagulation with ferric chloride, flocculation and clarification, or polymer-aided dual-media filtration. IntroductionUranium mines in Canada have practiced radium removal from tailings basin effluents since 1965. Treatment consists of addition of barium chloride to precipitate radium as barium- radium sulphate and provision of natural or constructed settling ponds for sedimentation. This process, however, has been identified as being deficient in that it allows particulate or suspended radium-226 releases which are higher than the regulated dissolved values». Also, the large size of some of the settling ponds is believed to represent a real limitation of the present technology because of inferred difficulty in recovery of barium-radium sulphate precipitates.The Federal Government Mining Task Force established a Radioactivity Sub-Group in 1974 to assist in the development of effluent regulations and guidelines for the uranium mining industry. Among the recommendations of the Sub-Group was the need to seek more effective methods of radium removal, including development of physical/chemical treatment systems as an alternative to settling ponds. In response to the SubGroup recommendations, a bench-scale study began in March 1976at the Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC) of Environment Canada . The results of this study indicated that coagulation and flocculation of the precipitate from barium chloride addition is a viable alternative to sedimentation in settling ponds(3). The bench work was expanded and accelerated in 1977, with financial assistance provided by the Atomic Energy Control Board. Subsequently, a research program with a larger scope was developed; this program is jointly managed and funded by government and industry, as shown in Table I.One of the goals of the joint program is to develop, at pilot scale, a physicalI chemical process to reduce the radium-226 content of uranium mining and milling effluents. Target radium-226 activities for treated tailings basin effluents were set: namely, 10 pCil L total and 3 pCil L dissolved radium 226. Extensive bench-scale and pilot-scale work was conducted through 1978 and 1979 and has culminated in the development of two physical/chemical processes. This paper describes work carried out at a pilot plant which led to the selection of the two physical I chemical processes for demonstration. In short-term tests, the processes produced effluents meeting the radium-226 target activities."

"Changes have recently been applied to the Sullivan Concentrator lead and zinc circuits to treat fine-grained ores which make-up the majority of ore reserves in the mine. Pilot plant test work conducted in 1990-91 indicated that concentrate grades would be substantially improved by reducing the particle size (P,0) of the lead from 38 to 15 µm and the zinc from 45 to 24 µm.Circuit revisions involved installation of major new equipment including: two GUO kilowatt Vertimills for regrinding, a 4 metre diameter column flotation cell and a 4 metre diameter hyperbaric pressure filter for dewatering. Duties of the existing regrind mills were reassigned.IntroductionThe Sullivan ore body is a massive sulphide deposit consisting of fine grained mixtures of sulphides, sometimes inter-banded with country rock and varying widely in their content of lead, zinc, iron and silicates. Principal economic minerals are marmatite and galena. Iron is mainly present as pyrrhotite (85%), and to a lesser extent as pyrite (15%) .The orebody has been actively mined since 1923, with 1992 ore reserves estimated at 15,800,000 tonnes with an average grade of 4. 7% lead and 7. 9% zinc. Current plans call for treatment of 1,600,000 tonnes/year, (7,000 tonnes per operating day), with flotation feed grades of 5.9% lead, 10.1% zinc, and 22.0% iron."

L 'objectif principal de SIDBEC-NORMINES est de produire six millions de tonnes de boulettes d'oxyde de fer par année, dont trois millions auront une faible teneur en silice afin de répondre aux exigences de la réduction directe. Les installations de SIDBEC-NORMINES sont adjacentes aux installations portuaires de la Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier, à l'est de la ville de Port-Cartier. L 'ensemble est conçu pour produire les deux types de boulettes avec deux circuits d'agglomération installes en parallèle. La production de concentré enrichi (68% Fe et plus) est obtenue dans une usine d'enrichissement utilisant le precédé de séparation magnétique hum ide ahaute intensite (separateurs Jones). In a radio frequency and optoelectoronic device packaging, Gold-Tin (Au-20 wt% Sn eutectic) solder is used widely due to the excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, high strength, and negligible creep characteristic under repetitive thermal cycling. With the recent lead-free movement, Gold-Tin solder is recognized as an alternative material for high temperature Lead-Tin solder. Generally, Gold-Tin solder is supplied in the forms such as ribbons, pellets, and ring frames. However, these forms must be set-up accurately on the joint area to press chips in bonding, therefore, it is difficult for these forms to satisfy the recent requirements for the down sizing in the connection areas. On the other hand, Au-20 wt% Sn solder paste can be applied flexibly to various supplying methods, such as printing, dispensing system and pin transcript. These methods also make it possible to reduce the production cost. However, in the case of using the solder paste, the void issue is one of the most undesirable problems. The void causes the degradation of the characteristics such as the bond strength, electrical characteristic and thermal conductivity. We have been intensifying the development of the void free paste, and have achieved void reduction by optimizing the powder size, the flux composition and the reflow condition.

"Canada is scheduled to become the 4th highest diamond revenue producing country in the world by year 2004 with the already operating Ekati Mine and the anticipated operation of the Jericho Mine in 2002 and the Diavik Mine in 2003.This paper provides an overview of worldwide diamond production statistics and a brief introduction to a diamond processing plant. The dense medium separation (DMS) extraction process is presented and this process is discussed in more detail with respect to the extraction of diamonds in terms of feed preparation, dense medium, dense medium cyclones, ferrosilicon recovery and dense medium cyclone operating efficiencies.INTRODUCTIONThe Ekati Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories started commercial production of diamonds in the 4* quarter of 1998. At full production, the mine is anticipated to produce annually some 3 million carats of diamonds. The Jericho Mine in Nunavut Territory and the Diavik Mine in the Northwest Territories are anticipated to come into production in the 1'' quarter of 2002 and 1st half of 2003 respectively. The combined annual diamond production of these three mines will total approximately 10.34 million carats by 2004, making Canada the 4~ highest diamond revenue producing country in the world.A diamond processing plant initially utilizes crushing, scrubbing and screening in the beneficiation process to liberate diamonds from kimberlite ore and size the product for further treatment through DMS. Alluvial diamond operations do not require initial crushing and scrubbing but incorporate a feed preparation and sometimes a recrush facility with the DMS plant. The heavy sink product from the DMS, which contains diamonds, is further upgraded through x-ray separation and high intensity magnetic separation prior to producing the final diamond product.DMS is a relatively simple separating principle. A mixture of particles of different density is immersed in a dense fluid, so that particles having a density lower than that of the fluid will float while those of heavier density will sink. The translation of the float-sink principle from a laboratory method to continuous industrial practice offers the prospect of very precise mineral separations based on density differences alone."

"The role of flash flotation in precious metal recovery is reviewed. Interacting flash flotation and gravity recovery is discussed. The GRG test can be used, when linked to the behaviour of gold in grinding and classification units, to predict the recovery of GRG by flash flotation. The Cadia mill in New South Wales is used as a case study of circuit design, performance and simulation. It is shown that high throughput coarse grind applications such as Cadia require very effective fine GRG recovery systems in the primary grinding loop, which are more consistent with flash flotation than batch centrifuge concentrators (BCCs). BCCs can effectively recover a significant fraction of the GRG from flash concentrates, as predicted by laboratory testing and confirmed at a growing number of mill sites.INTRODUCTIONThe GRG test was designed to characterize Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG) ten years ago (Woodcock and Laplante, 1993; Laplante et al, 2000), in response to the need to predict how much gold could be recovered from the main circulating load of grinding circuits using centrifuge concentration. The amount of GRG is not itself a prediction of gravity recovery: the performance of a gravity circuit nested in a circulating load also depends on the type and size of unit used, how much of the circulating load is treated, and how many times GRG is recycled and presented to the recovery circuit. The GRG test was first used in a simulator to predict gravity recovery (Laplante et al, 1995), and indeed most of the early tests targeted ores or prospective ores for which gravity recovery was an obvious match. As the test became more accepted, more and more samples returned a verdict that precluded the use of gravity recovery, or made it marginal. Typically, such ores are either copper-gold or base metal ores in which the GRG content is often fine (largely below 105 um) and ranges from 8 to 33%. Extensive simulation and plant sampling tests, either published (Laplante et al, 1997) or proprietary, show that full scale gravity recovery for these applications is generally below lo%, and can be as low as 2%. Not in all cases are such low recoveries economically unjustifiable, since there is documented evidence (Darnton et al, 1992) that a significant proportion of the gold recovered, at least in the case of base metal ores, would not have reported to the copper or zinc concentrate and received NSR credits."

Standard depressants used in the selective separation of copper and molybdenum sulfides by flotation pose environmental and health hazards. In this investigation, the floatability of chalcopyrite and molybdenite in the presence of six well-characterized lignosulfonates was studied through Hallimond tube flotation and adsorption tests. The results define the physicochemical conditions (lignosulfonate type and dosage, pH, presence of ions) for possible selective separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite. Dissolved polyvalent cations, especially calcium, appear to serve as "activators" for lignosulfonate adsorption on both minerals. From this point of view, the use of lime as a pH modifier is not always appropriate for optimum selectivity since high dosages of lime to produce high pH tend to indiscriminately depress both sulfides.

It can improve productivity for the overall benefit of an operation. Organizations can therefore use training as a mean to achieve their specific goals. Training is not the solution to every performance problem. However, in many cases, it can be a very effective way to attain desired performance.The benefits of training are often difficult to assess. However, to remain competitive, organizations must introduce new products and innovative technologies. Often, they can do both most effectively through suitable training interventions.In order for the effort and investment of training to provide optimal results, two points of view should be adopted.• An overall view of the system in which training is to be applied.• A systematic approach to the design of training (Stolovitch and Keeps, 1989)."

"Selectively recovering pentlandite from high levels of pyrrhotite presents a technical and operational challenge. The liberation characteristics and also the chemical environment is critical to performing a successful separation. Reviewing the mineralogy to understand the characteristics of the ore and the plant flotation behavior is fundamental to designing a successful improvement program.At Savannah Nickel the challenges presented by a falling nickel price required a rethink of the flowsheet to improve the project economics through improving the concentrate grade and recoveries. Glencore Technology reviewed the plant performance and proposed and tested solutions to improve the grade performance of the concentrator with the support of the plant team. A pilot plant comprising a M20 IsamillTM followed by an L500/1 Jameson Cell was operated on various plant streams. In addition to the pilot plant, flotation surveys and a plant based laboratory program was used to supplement the plant understanding and within two weeks significant improvements were identified and demonstrated. The combination of the pilot operation and the plant based laboratory program was able to quickly demonstrate the improvements and test with equipment that is fully scaleable from pilot plant to full scale.IntroductionPanoramic Resources Limited is a Western Australian mining company formed in 2001 for the purpose of developing the Savannah Nickel Project in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Panoramic successfully commissioned the $65 million Savannah Project in late 2004. The process plant at Savannah comprises a single stage crusher, SAG mill, flotation, thickening and filtering stages to produce a bulk nickel, copper, cobalt concentrate. Metallurgical recoveries average 86-89% for nickel, 94-97% for copper and 89-92% for cobalt. The plant was originally designed for a throughput of 750,000 tonnes per annum, but has consistently outperformed the design specifications.Due to low nickel prices the Savannah Nickel mine and processing plant were placed into care and maintenance in May 2016. Prior to suspending production Glencore Technology was engaged to investigate options to improve the concentrate grade. With the discovery of Savannah North in 2014 and the Savannah North Scoping Study demonstrating LoM ~8 years and Mining Inventory of 6.07Mt @ 1.26% Ni, 0.64% Cu and 0.09% Co significant future potential exists. By completing pilot plant studies prior to shutting down, the plant engineering studies can be completed and the plant readied for restart by the time the nickel price improves."

This paper presents the results of a research study that is being conducted by the Mine Effluents Program, Mining and Mineral Science Laboratory (MMSL), Natural Resources Canada aimed at evaluating biotechnology processes for the treatment of nitrogen compounds such as thiocyanide (CNS) and ammonia (NH4-N) which are present in gold mill effluents. A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology, commonly used for the biological treatment of municipal and industrial effluents, was used in this study. In the SBR process, the micro-organisms were able to degrade CNS to NH4-N and NH4-N to nitrate (NO3-N) at operating conditions of two 12 h treatment cycles per day, with pH maintained in the 7.4 to 7.6 range, and at room temperature (approximately 21°C) and also at 12 °C. The end products of CNS and NH4-N biological oxidation were NO3-N and sulphate (SO4) that are relatively non-toxic. Partial removal of NO3-N was achieved by biological denitrification reactions in the SBR process. The SBR process effluent was measured to be non-toxic to rainbow trout based on the 96 h acute toxicity test. The microbial consortium isolated from the SBR treating a simulated effluent was able to effectively oxidize CNS and NH4-N to NO3-N in water samples (under batch conditions) collected at three mine sites located in Quebec, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon.

"The last time I spoke to you the potash industry was at a low point. Markets were bad and the industry depressed. Many people had left and there was very little being done in terms of development. The current situation is very much changed. The oversupply conditions have given way to a very tight supply capability. All of the firms in the business are expanding in one way or another. These expansions will run from simple debottlenecking through to complete new projects.In New Brunswick, the Potash Corporation of America is proceeding with a new project and the Dennison - Potacan Project is in progress. In Saskatchewan, the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan has an ambitious 2.5 billion dollar expansion program underway while those in the private sector are taking a somewhat less ambitious but equally significant approach to obtain further tonnage out of existing facilities.The significance of these expansions to mineral processors is that we can expect to see expanded employment opportunities and through necessity a surge in innovation and development in an industry that has been traditionally very conservative. This presentation will review potash processing with a view towards highlighting some of the more recent developments."

"For over 50 years, Derrick Corporation has been renowned for its innovative and durable fine screening equipment and screen surface technology. Derrick’s latest innovation, the patented Stack Sizer, offers mineral processors both high tonnage capacity and high separation efficiency on an extremely small footprint.The Stack Sizer is suitable for separations from 6.3 mm down to 75 microns (200 mesh). The Stack Sizer, coupled with Derrick’s patented urethane screen surface technology, offers an extremely economical alternative to hydraulic classifiers, hydrocyclones, and less efficient low volume wet screening systems. Stack Sizers have been used in feed preparation for flotation, spirals, and a variety of jigs. Mineral processors wishing to reduce grinding circuit circulating loads and generation of slimes due to over grinding, thereby enhancing the efficiency of flotation and gravity circuits, now have another technology at their disposal to perform this critical sizing and grade control function.Over 200 Stack Sizers have been installed in numerous mineral processing applications worldwide attesting to the rapid acceptance of this technology. Stack Sizers are currently screening ferrous and non-ferrous metal ores, mineral sands, silica sand, kaolin clay, feldspar, garnet, phosphate, aluminum dross, potash, coal, tantalum, spodumene, niobium, and other rare earth mineral ores.INTRODUCTIONDerrick engineers have long understood and demonstrated the importance of screen width in coupling both high capacity and high separation efficiency for fine wet sizing applications. As opposed to fine dry sizing, where the length of the screening machine is critical for high separation efficiency, introducing slurry feed to screens in a thin and even layer at minimal velocities across wider screen surfaces allows for high capacities and efficiencies, with maximum screen cloth life. This is due primarily to the combination of free liquid and high frequency vibration of the Derrick motors, which allow fine undersize material to pass through the screen apertures. Lacking either of these factors would be extremely detrimental to the screening process. Without the high frequency vibration of the motor, the screen is essentially a low efficiency sieve bend. Without the free liquid to carry fines through the screen openings, the screen is for all intents and purposes a glorified conveyor or dewatering unit, as little or no sizing takes place once the screen is devoid of free liquid. For optimal screening results, Derrick recommends feeding slurry to a screen at approximately 20% solids by volume. Figure 1 shows the Stack Sizer design concept. Note that a single feed point is used to evenly distribute the flow to the five separate feed points."

NICICO has recently installed flotation columns operating in rougher, cleaner and re-cleaner circuits at three new copper concentrators; Miduk, Sungun and Sarcheshmeh. Miduk is probably one of the unique operations that use flotation columns in a rougher circuit. The Miduk rougher circuit comprises five CISA parallel columns. The rougher concentrate constitutes 88% of final concentrate and reports to concentrate thickener. The rougher tailings are scavenged with ten 50 m3 mechanical cells. The scavenger concentrate is then reground and cleaned in three 3.2 m columns in parallel. The cleaner tailings are scavenged in six 50 m37mechanical cells. The cleaner tailings along with the rougher scavenger constitute final tailings.In Sarcheshmeh, the cleaner concentrate is re-cleaned in a column. The column tailings are sent back to the cleaning circuit and the concentrate is reported to the concentrate thickener.This paper reviews performance details of the flotation columns utilized in rougher circuits at Miduk and compares their metallurgical performances in an industrial scale with columns at cleaning circuits for copper flotation. Practical limitations for applying the flotation columns in rougher circuits will be discussed in details.INTRODUCTIONThe use of flotation columns has grown rapidly since the first successful commercial application at Mines Gaspe, where columns were used in a cleaning circuit to float molybdenite. Early applications of columns were restricted to replacing or adding final cleaning stages in existing circuits. Columns can achieve superior cleaning as compared to conventional cells due to their ability to support a large froth depth and the use of water for washing froth. Wash water travels down through the froth and crosses the pulp/froth interface, replaces the entrained particles reporting to the froth from pulp and improve the concentrate grade."
