"Exploration and development of mineral resources in developing countries by Canadian-based multinational mining companies is becoming increasingly common. One problem being encountered is that the objectives of the governments of developing countries can differ from those of developed countries. These objectives are not always consistent with maximizing returns from the projects, which can create conflicts between the mining company's responsibility to its shareholders and the desire to be a good corporate citizen. This article discusses how a mining tax regime can be designed to make the social goals of a government consistent with the economic goals of the company.IntroductionAt the recent International Seminar on Mining Taxation organized by CIM and the United Nations there was considerable discussion about the role of international mining companies operating in developing countries. Not surprisingly, given the diversity of backgrounds of individuals attending the Seminar, there were different opinions about what this role should be.Government PositionRepresentatives of governments pointed out the strong desires of their countries for technology, high-level technical training of their workforce, increased employment, and development of social infrastructure. They pointed out that, to a large extent, these objectives could be more efficiently met by mining companies operating in the country than by the governments themselves. For example, a multinational mining company (""MMC"") would have extensive knowledge of the various technologies available, and would have performed a detailed evaluation of the mineral resources before choosing the most cost-efficient technology for that project. They would, therefore be in an ideal position to assist the country in importing and developing such technology. Similarly, the company could provide opportunities for hands-on training, both at the technical and managerial levels, which would otherwise be unavailable to the government."

"Seven lithologic units, informally characterized, were recognized in the vicinity of the Montauban orebody. The first five lie in stratigraphic order. From structural bottom to structural top these are: (1) grey composite gneiss; (2) dark grey quartz-biotite gneiss; (3) quartz-biotite-garnet gneiss hosting several calcareous, aluminous and magnesian members and gold mineralization; (4) light grey quartz-muscovite-(sericite)-biotite gneiss; and (5) metabasafts. The last two intrude the sequence: (6) amphibolite dykes and (7) pegmatite veins. The orebody lies on the inverted limb of an overturned synform verging to the west with the metabasafts marking the core of the fold. As the foliation is folded, this fold is attributed to deformation ""D2""; deformation ""DI"" being responsible for the formation of the foliation. A late brittle deformation developed shear zones with probable strike-slip motions. The refined stratigraphy and the identification of the structural position of the orebody provide new tools for regional interpretation and prospecting.RESUMESept unités lithologiques ont été définies informeffement à proximité du gisement de Montauban. "In mineral exploration and mining applications, it is sometimes necessary to reduce sampling error in order to improve representivity of individual sample assays. Historic efforts to reduce sampling error have relied on the belief that larger samples exhibit less sampling error. Justifications for this belief traditionally have coupled the binomial theorem with an ideal geological material consisting of ore and gangue particles of equal size and shape (an equant grain model) and empirical tests of geological materials, to illustrate an inverse relationship between sample size and sampling variance. To date, no proof exists of this sample size-sampling variance relationship in real geological materials exhibiting variations in grain size, shape, composition, and degree of liberation.Using first principles calculus and the formula for the mean, sample mass and sampling variance are proven to be inversely proportional in all geological materials. Distribution assumptions and physically ideal geological models are not used in this proof. Furthermore, algebraic manipulations of expressions describing the variances of equant grain models consistent with binomial, hypergeometric, and Poisson distributions reveal that these models also exhibit an inverse sample size-sampling variance relationship. Thus, the sampling behaviors of these models are numerically consistent with the sampling behaviors of real geological materials, and these models can be used to estimate sampling errors in real geological materials using simple sampling parameters."

"An introduction and case study of Mintek's latest generation of Milling Circuit controller, the MillStarTM with IES (Interpreting Expert System) is presented. This paper also describes as a case study its installation on a Southern African base metals concentrator plant which has demonstrated improved operation, greatly reduced variation in product quality, as well as increased capacity and availability of the circuit.In this case study, the MillStarTMw as installed along with several other enhancements, including hydrocyclone underflow monitoring, product particle size estimation and flotation circuit stabilisation. MillStarTM utilised the particle size measurement to control grind to within 2% of setpoint, all the while ensuring sump level control, density control as well as mill power optimisation. Mintek' s expertise in the modelling of tumbling mills allowed the development of a specialised optimising controller that ensured the mill was kept in the most efficient operating region.MillStarTM augments the automatic control with useful user interface features, such as on-line trends of any logged variables, historic data warehousing and retrieval and production summary reports.A novel feature that distinguishes the MillStarTMi s the IES (Interpreting Expert System). This is a feature of the software that works with the automatic control code to generate explanations for control actions made by the controller. Often complex control systems are mysterious in nature, reducing trust and eventually resulting in them being switched off. "The planning and construction of prime coking coal beneficiation plants in the nationalized mines in India are reviewed. Flow schemes, construction practice, materials consumption, and costs are detailed.Medium-capacity beneficiation plants with multiple loops are recommended under Indian conditions.IntroductionThe reserve of high-grade and easily washed metallurgical coal in India are quite limited. Prime coking coal constitutes approximately 22% of the total resources and occurs exclusively in the Jharia coalfield in the state of Bihar. Bharat Coking Coal Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) the nationalized mining sector of India) owns 80% of the Jharia collieries. The development of Jharia coalfield in the pre-nationalized period before 1971 has been characterized by a large number of small mines with primitive mining methods and low productivity. The production of prime coking coal to meet the demand of the steel industry in India has to increase from the existing level of 11.1 million tonnes to 43.4 million tonnes per annum by 2000 AD, thereby producing 5.61 million tonnes and 22.7 million tonnes of clean coal respectively. An ambitious program has been undertaken for development of bigger mines with an average production of 1 to 3 million tonnes per annum. With the fast dwindling reserves of good quality coking coal, more inferior grade coal seams, having difficult washing characteristics, are now being mined. All the coal from the future mines will have to be beneficiated to make it suitable for consumption of steel plants; the following washeries are being planned for construction by 2000 AD:"

In the last years, supported gold catalysts with particle sizes smaller than 10 nm have attracted a lot of attention. While gold bulk metal is rather inert in chemical reactions and, thus, is of low interest for catalysis, highly dispersed gold particles supported on oxides as TiO2 or ZrO2 show surprisingly high activities in some reactions important for the chemical industry. The oxidation of carbon monoxide at low temperatures is mainly used as model reaction to study the unusual properties of gold catalysts [1]. On the other hand, to evaluate the catalytic potential of gold, other chemical reactions which allow to control also the selectivity have to be considered. The selective hydrogenation of ???-unsaturated aldehydes to allylic alcohols is of both commercial relevance (e.g. in fine chemical and pharmaceutical intermediate production) and specific scientific interest [2]. Note that thermodynamics favors hydrogenation of the C=C over the C=O group (stronger negative free reaction enthalpy of 35 kJ/mol), and for kinetic reasons the C=C bond is more reactive than the C=O group. Thus, in the presence of most of the conventional hydrogenation catalysts, based on Pt, Rh or Pd, -unsaturated aldehydes such as acrolein and crotonaldehyde are hydrogenated predominantly to the saturated aldehydes and only to a minor extent to unsaturated alcohols. Therefore, it is desirable to find catalysts which are able to control the intramolecular selectivity by hydrogenation preferentially the C=O group while keeping the olefinic double bond intact (Fig. 1).

"Koudiat Aïcha is a small Zn-Pb-Cu deposit, enclosed in the Visean Sarhlef volcano-sedimentary series of the Moroccan Hercynian Jebilet massif. Base metal mineralization is located between a basal unit consisting of black argillite with arenite intercalations, and an upper unit composed of black argillite with locally fossiliferous calcareous units towards the top. Paraconcordant gabbro sills are present in both the upper and basal units, and the enclosing strata. Three successive phases of deformation linked to regional deformation overprint the volcano-sedimentary rocks and gabbros, as well as the sulfide mineralization.The mineral deposit includes several lenses of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite, 1 to 20 m thick, with a large halo of disseminated sulfide veinlets and sulfide nodules within a zone of intense chlorite alteration in the footwall. The ore mineralogy consists of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite with lesser amounts of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, pyrite, and stannite.Lead isotope results (206Pb/204Pb averaging 18.27) suggest that the metals of the Koudiat Aïcha deposit are derived from the volcano-sedimentary host rocks. Sulfur isotopes also indicate a volcano-sedimentary origin, with bacterial reduction of sulfate (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ to -10.5‰). The conditions for sulfide meta-morphic equilibration range from 250° to 330°C (sphalerite and chlorite geothermometers). The gabbroic sills could have been a local heat source for hydrothermal circulation. Based on these geological and mineralogical features, a Besshi-type model seems appropriate for the genesis of the Koudiat Aïcha mineralization.Koudiat Aïcha est un petit dépôt de Zn-Pb-Cu, encaissé dans la série volcano-sédimentaire Viséenne de Sarhlef dans le massif Hercynien de Jebilet au Maroc. La minéralisation en métaux usuels se situe entre une unité basale d’argilite noire interlitée d’arénite et une unité supérieure composée d’argilite noire comprenant localement des calcaires fossilifères près de son sommet. Des sills de gabbro paraconcordants sont présent à la fois dans les unités basale et supérieure, ainsi que dans les strates environnantes. Trois phases de déformation successives associées a la déformation régionale superposent leurs effets sur les roches volcano-sédimentaires, les gabbros, ainsi que la minéralisation sulfurée. Ce gîte comprend plusieurs lentilles de pyrrhotite massive a semimassive de 1 a 20 m d’épaisseur au sein d’un large halo de veinules de sulfures disséminés et en nodules au sein d’une zone intensément chloritisée dans le mur du gisement. Le minerai consiste en pyrrhotite massive à semimassive avec des quantités subordonnées de sphalérite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite, de galène, de pyrite, et de stannite. Les résultats de l’analyse des isotopes du plomb (206Pb/204Pb moyen de 18.27) suggèrent que les métaux du gîte Koudiat Aïcha proviennent des roches volcano-sédimentaires encaissantes. Les isotopes du souf¬fre indiquent eux-aussi une origine volcano-sédimentaire, impliquant la réduction bactérienne des sulfates (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ et -10.5‰). "The recovery of gold from ores is often accompanied by the release of other species in the leach solution. This state of affairs leads to depleted free cyanide levels in the slurry. Therefore, separation and quantification of these cyanicides and free cyanide at different stages of the cyanidation process as well as in waste solutions is crucial to provide mitigation tools by preventing leaching of deleterious metals for environmental considerations.COREM and the research group of Prof. Larachi have been working together on the control of gold passivation and cyanicides during cyanidation for several years. Previously, a first capillary electrophoresis (CE) protocol for the speciation of sulfur and cyanicides (SCN-, Cu, Fe) during cyanidation of gold complex sulfide ores was developed and validated for assessing industrial process water.The separation of zinc cyanide complexes used to be confronted with a number of difficulties due to the weak and/or undetectable cyanocomplexes in formally available CE protocols. Moreover, according to our knowledge, no direct CE protocol exists to separate free cyanide. Therefore, a new study aimed at developing a second CE protocol for the detection and quantification of cyanide complexes of zinc and nickel as well as of free cyanide in the cyanidation process water.To achieve this goal, six common carrier electrolytes such as pyridine, trimellitic acid, 4-methylbenzylamine, sodium chromate, phthalic acid and tris base were studied, using an indirect UV detection method. The best results were obtained using sodium chromate for which all ions were successfully separated and quantified. In addition, the effect of electric field strength, injection volume, electro-osmotic flow (EOF) modifier and background electrolyte (BGE) concentration were examined, while peak height, peak area and noise were considered for optimization.As a result, the new protocol is expected to complete the initial CE protocol by detecting cyanide complexes of zinc and nickel as well as free cyanide. Moreover, analytical determination of free cyanide in the presence of weak cyanide complexes achieved by the new protocol was also compared to conventional titration using silver nitrate solution. This new CE protocol will contribute to applied research and help plants to better understand and eventually control the behaviour of cyanidation circuits."

For many years, sulfuric acid producers all over the world have been forced to meet ever more strict environmental regulations to reduce SO2 emissions. The sulfuric acid industry has implemented new solutions in order to comply with the new lower SO2 emissions target. Haldor Topsoe (Topsoe) has responded to this challenge by continuously improving the range of VK sulfuric acid catalysts and providing tailor-made catalyst solutions to meet the demands of the sulfuric acid producers for lower SO2 emissions. Reducing emissions through catalysis: requires less capital than installing a scrubber, requires no additional process chemicals, generates no waste or by-product to dispose of. In 1996 Topsoe introduced VK69, a cesium-promoted vanadium catalyst, designed for operation in the pass(es) after the intermediate absorption tower in double absorption plants. The high activity of VK69 allows for a more than 50% reduction in SO2 emissions from existing double-absorption plants. Topsoe currently has more than 110 installations of VK69. To comply with the still more stringent regulations being placed on the sulfuric acid industry to lower SO2 emissions, Topsoe has developed a new sulfuric acid catalyst designated VK-701 LEAP5™. This catalyst was introduced to the market in 2010. VK-701 LEAP5™ is based on a novel technology which circumvents the internal transport deficiencies of existing commercial sulfuric acid catalysts and thereby offers exceptionally high activity in strong, SO3 rich gases. Sulfuric acid plants have used this catalyst to meet emissions requirements lower than previously believed possible with a catalyst only solution. This paper will present examples on how to reduce emissions by implementing a tailor-made catalyst solution using VK69 and VK-701 LEAP5™.

"A brief summary of the different membrane separation options currently available to the mining industry will be presented and discussed. The processes described involve operating membrane plants on the following applications: pregnant leach solutions (PLS) in the copper and gold industries, fractionation and concentration of metals and acids in refineries, and wastewater treatments to meet state-of-the-art surface discharge criteria.Included is a specific discussion on cost savings resulting from an operating membrane treatment system of nearly 3,500 m3/hr barren water relative to the prior, conventional precipitation practice at a major heap leach gold mine. This Engineered Membrane Separation® (EMS®) plant has produced water for six years that has met all standards for direct discharge into the environment, and captures and returns to the operation valuable minerals and solvents which were not previously being extracted in the Merrill-Crowe process.INTRODUCTIONMembrane technology has been available for more than 35 years, but has been used sparingly in the mining industry. However, recent developments in polymer chemistry, spiral-wound element design and construction, water clarification pretreatment equipment and techniques, and an expanded understanding of membrane fouling and cleaning techniques have dramatically improved the reliability and robustness of membrane-based systems for potential use by the mining industry.In the past 15 years large operating plants have successfully demonstrated the use of this “new” membrane technology to include the separation of pay-metals from large-volume acid and cyanide heap leach mining solutions containing copper, zinc, gold and silver. Moreover, variations on these same membrane technologies are ideally suited to fractionations that add value to processing fluids from refineries, like separating metals from acids or concentrating acids and producing high-quality process fluids."

"Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10,000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in threes individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream x-ray analysis. Recently this system was further automated by adding computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery 0.8%, zinc recovery 1.6%, and reduced reagent costs by 12%. Although not anticipated, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved modestly as well.INTRODUCTIONSEcstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, one of the world's major base metal producers, near the old gold mining centre of Timmins, Ontario. Discovered in 1964, the property was brought into production in November, 1966. Originally designed for 9,000 tons per day, the operation now treats 10,000 tons per day of two different ore types mined from a single open pit. In the near future, open pit ore will be supplemented by ore from an underground operation now being readied for productionAt the Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. The whole plant is highly automated and control is coordinated from a central control room. The treatment process follows conventional practices although fine grinding is required for optimum flotation recoveries. Normally, two circuits treat copper-zinc ore at a combined rate of 6,500 tons per day while the third circuit treats 3,500 tons per day of silver-lead-zinc ore. Special production averages 2,400 tons per day."

This paper summarizes diamond exploration techniques used in glaciated terrain, focusing on indicator mineral and geochemical methods applied to glacial sediments. Understanding the ice flow history, depositional history, and stratigraphy of glacial sediments are essential to successful sampling, interpretation and follow-up of indicator mineral and geochemical anomalies related to kimberlites. Kimberlite indicator minerals survive glacial transport over long distances and the relative abundance of each mineral in till is a function of the primary mineralogy of individual kimberlites. Indicator mineral distributions observed at a regional scale define the net effect of glacial dispersal, often along different ice flow directions. Local-scale distributions define individual dispersal trains. The medium sand (0.25 to 0.5 mm) fraction of heavy mineral concentrates prepared from glacial sediment samples is best suited for indicator mineral surveys. The application of till geochemistry to diamond exploration is increasing because it is significantly cheaper than indicator mineral analysis and it can be performed quickly. The <0.063 mm (silt+clay) and 0.5 to 2.0 mm (coarse sand) fractions provide the best geochemical contrast between background and kimberlite-rich till. Kimberlite pathfinder elements that provide good contrast include Ni, Cr, Ba, Co, Sr, Rb, Nb, Mg, Ta, Ca, Fe, K, Ti and REE, the relative importance of which will depend on kimberlite composition as well as that of the surrounding bedrock.

"In the last few decades, microwave energy has been widely employed in food processing, rubber and plastics curing, and in ceramic sintering. Recently, the application of micro waves as an energy source in extractive metallurgy has received considerable attention from a number of researchers. During the period from the mid-1960s to about 1988, the majority of the research was focussed on the behaviour of materials in microwave radiation. These research activities will continue to be important, since fundamental data on the interaction of microwaves with materials are vital for the successful application of the technology. Since1990, a number of potential applications of microwave processing have been investigated.These include: pretreatment of ores and concentrates, leaching, reduction, preheating of refractories, heating of slags and waste treatment. In this paper, the interaction of micro -waves with materials of interest in extractive metallurgy are reviewed and potential applications are discussed.IntroductionMicrowaves were first used in 1946 for the heating of materials, shortly after radar equipment was invented during the second world war. It was evident that microwaves were very effective for heating water and the technology was quickly adopted for drying and cooking. Since the introduction of the first microwave oven by Raytheon in 1952, many millions of domestic microwave ovens have been sold annually (National Research Council,1994; Atomic Energy of Canada and Voss Associates Engineering, 1990).In extractive metallurgy, microwaves are in the early stages of development (National Research Council, 1994; Atomic Energy of Canada and Voss Associates, 1990; McGill and Walkiewicz, 1987; Bradhurst and Worner, 1990;Peng et al., 1993). However, there are several reasons for the growing interest in the use of this technology in the field of metals extraction. These include the following potential advantages of microwaves: (1) rapid and selective heating of materials; (2) reactions can be catalyzed because the heating occurs on a molecular or atomic level; (3) clean and controllable energy source; (4) the gas volume is reduced and the atmosphere can be controlled as there are no gaseous combustion products; (5) the material is heated internally in comparison to external heating with conventional methods; (6)the temperature of the refractory can be minimized; and (7) the working environment is improved."

"As part of a major reconstruction and expansion of the Majdanpek Copper Mine, an investigation and optimization of the flotation collector regime was undertaken. The flotation response of the major minerals to various reagents and the effect of pulp chemistry was studied from both a fundamental and practical point of view. These studies led to plant trials and the eventual adoption of a modified collector suite which improved both copper and gold recoveries.INTRODUCTIONThe Majdanpek Copper Mine processes 40,000 tons per day of ore containing about 0.43% cu. In addition to copper, the ore also contains recoverable quantities of molybdenite and gold. The mine has been in operation since 1961 and is the largest in Yugoslavia. It is currently undergoing major reconstruction and expansion. The flowsheet of the Majdanpek concentrator is shown on Figure 1.The ore body is variable in composition and changes in mill feed require proper control of operating variables to achieve the optimum metallurgical results. A detailed study including grindability, flotation response, and solid-liquid separation was carried out on several samples of the ore. Flotation response and the choice of reagent chemistry were found to be very important in achieving the highest recoveries of metal values. An automatic reagent control scheme insured that optimum dosages were used in the plant.The flotation collectors used at the present time include sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX), AERO 3302 Promoter and AERO 5415 Promoter. The addition of AERO 5415 to the reagent suite is a recent development and was based on the favorable results obtained in the extensive laboratory testing program conducted to establish the optimum reagent combination and dosages. Subsequent plant tests confirmed that AERO 5415 provided significant improvements in copper and gold recoveries. A description of the mineralogy of the Majdanpek ore and details of laboratory and plant metallurgical data are given in this paper. The chemistry of AERO 5415 Promoter and its interaction with minerals relevant to Majdanpek ore are also discussed."

Nickel laterite deposits are typically formed from tropically weathered mafic-to-ultramafic complexes. The resulting nickel concentration is found within soil horizons and is mineable with regular dozer units. At the time of mining, digging elevations are needed at selective mining units (SMUs) or representative dozer regions (RDRs). Moreover, for mine planning, the costs due to dilution and lost ore require mining elevations to be specified. A conditional simulation approach is used to calculate “optimum” RDR mining elevations. Multiple realizations of the ore base surface are simulated. For a single bottom surface realization, dilution and lost ore costs are calculated over the entire vertical extent of each RDR. The optimum mining elevation is the elevation where the lowest summed cost of “accepting dilution” and “wasting ore” occurs. The reported RDR dilution is the cost of mining the volume of waste located below the bottom surface and above the optimum mining elevation. The reported RDR lost ore is the cost of not mining the volume of ore above the bottom surface and below the optimum mining elevation. For all ore bottom surface realizations, optimum RDR mining elevations and their associated dilution and lost ore costs are calculated and compiled to represent production uncertainty.

Geographically situated on the Porcupine-Destor Fault, the mine and mill in Stock township is positioned in the heart of Northeastern Ontario's goldmining communities.In July 1988, a 600 ft. shaft, hoist, and compressors were already in place when construction started on a 500 T.P.D. capacity C.I.P. mill and crushing plant.By June 15, 1989 the mill was commissioned and attained the design capacity by August of that same year. "Bubble surface area flux (Sb) is the surface area of bubbles per unit time per unit cross-sectional area of flotation machine. The units are: (m2 bubble surface/s)/(m2 cell) or s -1. For bubbles of mean size db (m), s b = 6-Qg/A db where Qg is the gas rate (m3/s), and A the cell cross-section (m'). This parameter is now receiving wide attention as the possible key machine variable in flotation diagnosis and modelling. The concept is described and the potential use of sb is illustrated by work on flotation columns and mechanical cells. In column flotation of recycled paper, the dependence of ink recovery on s b was the same regardless of size of column or type of sparger. In mechanical cells, it has been established that the rate constant is related to Sb independent of impeller type.The use of s b is limited by the problem of measurement, primarily that of estimating db. A prototype probe designed to estimate db (and hence sb) based on conductivity measurements is described. Exploratory work with the probe in a mechanical cell suggests the promise of making estimation of s b routine.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is the result of interaction among variables associated with the feed particles, chemistry and the machine (flotation cell). Trying to isolate the effects of each aids in process diagnosis and is at the centre of attempts to model flotation. The machine variables that have been investigated include the air flow number, the power number and specific power (Harris, 1976). None have survived as the basis for predicting flotation response perhaps because they did not include directly the properties of the bubble swarm (or dispersion). Recently, Gorain (1 997) explored the relationship between the flotation rate constant and various ""gas dispersion"" parameters notably: superficial air rate (Jg = Qg/A, where Qg is the volumetric gas rate and A is cross-sectional area of cell), bubble size (db), gas holdup (Eg, i.e., the volumetric fraction of a cell occupied by gas) and bubble surface area flux (sb = 6.Jg/db). Of them all, Gorain et al. (1997) conclude that the latter, the surface area flux, correlated best with the flotation rate constant. This concept was adopted from column flotation where it was used to estimate, among other factors, the maximum amount of gas that could be injected (Finch and Dobby), 1990). Let's start by reviewing the concept. Following that some examples of where the concept has been applied will be described to illustrate the current interest and finally we will consider how to measure the surface area flux."

"Selbaie is located northwest of Joutel, in what is known as the fourth east-west volcanic sediment group in northwestern Quebec. The main metals produced are copper and zinc, with important contents of both silver and gold. Production comes from an open pit mine on the A-I zone and from two underground mines on the B zone and the A-2 zone. Each mine gave rise to important capital investment programs for construction and mine development, all of which were managed and staffed with company-hired, non-union personnel. Production from all sources now exceeds 7000 tonnes per day, with a workforce of540 regular employees. Of particular interest technically is the high recovery of B zone reserves underneath 40 m of overburden cover, the low-cost capital development of the A-2 zone, the computerized control of open pit mining, and the successful copper-zinc separation of the A-1 zone ore. Due to the low grades of the mineral deposits, efficiency in all aspects of the production process, is essential to the success of the operation.LocationThe Selbaie Mine is located 82 km northwest of the locality of Joutel in northwestern Quebec (Fig. 1). Access to the mine is by an all-weather road, 32 km of which is paved. A second road access to the site is via La Sarre, 134km to the southwest. Employee access, materials transport and haulage of copper and zinc concentrates take place over both of these roads."

"This paper provides a critical review of the development and application of advanced controls in mineral processing at the industrial level. These algorithms can be sub-divided into four broad categories: Kalman filter, self-tuning, extended horizon, and knowledge based or expert systems. Applications from each category are described outlining the benefits derived, the relative advantages of that particular controller, and potential limitations of the controller which may inhibit their more widespread application. The paper will conclude with a description of control algorithms which are currently in the rudimentary design stage, but may hold tremendous potential for mineral processing control systems in the next decade. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian mining industry has a large installed milling base and many plants are run with manual or low level automatic process control. The competitive pressures imposed by the market will not allow these operations to ignore the significant increase in efficiency that can be achieved through the effective application of advanced process control. These improvements will come in the form of better quality, higher productivity and reduced costs.There have been quite a number of reports of successful applications of advanced control in mineral processing applications. As this trend continues, and more of the work is documented, the technology will be more effectively transferred to process and control engineers. It is the authors' opinion that the most difficult problems facing process control are not really technical in nature. Rather, they lie more in process control education. This extends from management, through engineering to the operators.The purpose of this paper is to provide a tutorial type overview of some of the more frequently encountered advanced control algorithms. The assumption is that the reader has a superficial knowledge of this technology. In the discussions which follow, several techniques are explored within the framework of simple process examples. Industrial examples are cited for each and an evaluation of the expected longer term potential is given."
