Historical In the course of a paper which is necessarily limited in length, such as the present one, it is obviously impossible to describe in detail the history, development, and present position of coal preparation in Western Europe. Great Britain has been blessed with large deposits of excellent coal of nearly every type, ranging from the high-grade anthracites of South Wales, which are characterised by their very low ash and volatile con-tents, to the superb coking coals of South Wales and Durham -probably the finest in the world -with their low ash and sulphur contents, the latter constituent often well be-low l per cent. Gas coals abound in Lancashire and Yorkshire, while coals from the East Midlands, Northumberland, and Scotland are excellent for steam-raising and other industrial purposes. The excellent quality of these various coals has, in years gone by, ensured ready .sales abroad and it is not surprising, therefore; that methods of coal preparation were largely developed on the Continent in an endeavour to upgrade the inferior fuels found there, so that the prepared product could compete with British coals on the European market.

L'approche analytique choisie doit tenir compte de plusieurs facteurs, les plus importants étant: le type de materiel analysé, sa representativite, la sensibitite de la methode et les cotits reliés à son utilisation. Dans cette optique, plusieurs démarches ana/ytiquessont possibles, toutes requérant une étape de préconcentration. L 'une des plus adéquate consiste à effectuer une préconcentration par fusion plombeuse suivie d'une analyse par émission au plasma, cette procédure permettant de mesurer Ie platine, la palladium et Ie rhodium à des couts compétitifs (15 $/échantillon). Advenant 10 presence de teneurs appréciables de l'un ou plusieurs de ces éléments, une préconcentration par fusion au sulfure de nickel suivie d 'une analyse par activation neutronique assure alors la mesure de tous les EGP ainsi que celie de l’or (90 $/échantillon). Il est important de noter que Ie nickel, ades teneurs superieures à 4%, interfère au cours de l'étape de préconcentration par fusion plombeuse, ce qui se traduit pas sous-dosage des concentrations en platine, effectivement presentes dans l'échantillon. Ainsi, les géologues à la recherche d'EPG dans des environnements géologiques riches en nickel devraient s'assurer que l'analyse utilise, au cours de l'étape de préconcentration, une fusion au sulfure de nickel.

"Heap leaching of low-grade copper-cobalt oxidized ore and solvent extraction of copper, cobalt, manganese, and zinc were investigated. Heap-leaching parameters were optimized using agitated and tray batch leaching tests, capped by tests on a pilot semicontinuous heap-leach plant. The optimum pregnant leach solution yielded 2,350 mg/L Cu, 3,800 mg/L Co, 3,600 mg/L Fe, 130 mg/L Mn, 25 mg/L Zn, and 0.58 g/L solids in suspension, with pH and acidity of 1.27 and 3.66 g/L, respectively. Copper, cobalt, and impurities (Mn and Zn) were extracted using (v/v) 30% CP-150, 20% IONQUEST® 290, and 20% D2EHPA, respectively; overall recoveries of copper, cobalt, and impurities were 98, 99, and 70%, respectively.RÉSUMÉ La lixiviation en tas des minerais oxydés de cuivre et de cobalt et l’extraction par solvant du cuivre, du cobalt, du manganèse et du zinc ont été étudiés. Les paramètres de lixiviation en tas ont été optimisés à l’aide d’essais de lixiviation en discontinu sur un plateau, complétés par des essais relatifs à une usine pilote de lixiviation en tas en semi-continu. It treats oxidized ores of copper and cobalt that are recovered by sulphuric acid heap leaching (Trujillo, Cisternas, Gálvez, & Mellado, 2014; Kime, Kanowa, Mulaba- Bafubiandi, & Diyambi, 2016) and solvent extraction processes (Crane, Urbani, Dudley, Horner, & Virnig, 2009; Fisher, 2011; Kime et al., 2016). The ore to the plant is primarily sourced from the Luita and Mukondo mines. Geological prospecting work by Gecamines and Boss Mining showed that the Mukondo mine contains a very large cobalt reserve not yet exploited, but with grades as low as 0.2%.Currently, Boss Mining is focusing on the production of copper, but is investigating methods to efficiently produce both copper and cobalt. A challenge in the production of cobalt from this ore is its presence in the third oxidation state. This requires the addition of reducing agents, which increases the overall operating cost (Kime & Makgoale, 2016). Cobalt solvent extraction is also very sensitive to impurities such as nickel, zinc, manganese, and aluminum, which are often co-extracted (Swartz, Donegan, & Amos, 2009). This sensitivity to impurities requires the optimization of operational parameters to lower impurity levels as much as possible in the electrolyte."

"Metallurgical extraction processes often call for the heating of aqueous slurries. Indirect heat exchangers are generally not feasible for service with high yield stress slurries because of low heat transfer rates. It is more appropriate to heat the slurry by direct contact, typically with steam as the heating medium. Although having a long and successful history, direct-contact heat transfer to aqueous slurries has been used without the support of pilot plant research. This paper provides results of the needed research, the work being done at a scale large enough to enable direct scale up to commercial operations. A pilot plant heater was constructed and tested to develop an understanding of the slurry heating process and to ensure that commercial scale heaters were appropriately sized.INTRODUCTIONPressure Leaching OperationsPressure leaching operations are often used to oxidise sulphide gold ores, or for extraction of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores with sulphuric acid. Where there is sufficient sulphur available, the exothermic pressure oxidation reactions can be self sustaining at temperatures as high as 225 ºC, without having to preheat the feed slurry. At lower sulphur levels, slurry preheating is required. This is typically achieved by utilising the flash steam released from the slurry letdown stages and contacting this directly with cold incoming slurry ahead of the autoclave. The vessels where this slurry-steam contact is made are known as heaters or condensers, with the number of pre-heat stages varying, depending on how much heat is evolved in the oxidation reaction (Mason, 1990).In nickel laterite pressure acid leaching processes, which operate between 245 and 270 ºC, the only significant exothermic reactions are those associated with dilution of sulphuric acid in the leach. As a consequence, slurry preheating with flash steam is always used commercially. In practice the number of flash steam preheating stages required varies from 1 to 3, driven by a number of factors, including other uses for flash steam and the upper temperature limit at which preheated slurry can be pumped. A diagram of a typical pressure acid leach train is shown in Figure 1.For pressure acid leaching operations and at low sulphur levels in pressure oxidation, boiler generated direct steam addition to the autoclave is required to sustain the reaction temperature. For this reason it is imperative that the flash steam – slurry heat transfer is efficient and the slurry temperature approaches that of the flash steam closely."

"There has been a continuous evolution with the use of pre-cast concrete elements in the construction of aluminum smelters. In 1990, Phase I of Alouette was built using cast-in-place concrete exclusively. Whereas, other AP 30 technology plants such as Hillside 2 in the mid-1990s used pre-cast concrete beams with cast-in-place floors. Mozal 2, in 2002, used pre-cast concrete beams with pre-cast partial-slab operating floors. Alouette Phase II went further. Not only were the potroom building beams and floors pre-cast, but the entire pot support system, insulating walls and basement jersey walls were pre-cast. Once the techniques for bending and welding the reinforcement bars and the design for attaching electrical insulating plates to the concrete was perfected, the challenge for the project remained only in the logistics of transporting the pieces to site and simple erection. The overall impact on the project was dramatic. Using prefabricated concrete not only allowed advancement of the schedule, but totally eliminated formwork, re-bar installation, and form removal activities along with the handling of all the materials involved with these activities. With the elimination of these labour and material-intensive portions of the job, exposure to work injuries was dramatically reduced. The most prevalent activity for lost time accidents is during the rough work associated with concrete formwork, placing concrete and form removal. Another area where prefabricated elements were successfully used on Alouette Phase II was for the insulating walls enclosing the pot area, known as the ""claustra walls"". Usually these walls are constructed in-situ using mortar and breeze block. Success was also achieved with prefabrication of the perimetric walls that are installed at the lower floor of the potroom. A big advantage of using prefabricated concrete in the electrolysis area is in assuring electrical isolation for the operating floors. "Aggregates are the low-cost mineral raw material of building construction. Large volumes of aggregate are consumed each year. The availability of aggregates in southern Ontario is discussed in the context of the geological formations in which they occur. Sand and gravel are abundant in glacial deposits and in recent sediments. A knowledge of the glacial history is important for their discovery. Bedrock formations provide a variety of aggregates in Ontario. Knowledge of the rock types involved and of the depth of overburden are important for evaluation of the aggregate potential of bedrock resources in an area. Utilization of available resources intensifies as the population increases. Urban development makes it progressively more difficult to satisfy the demands of the construction industry. The effects of urban development on the aggregate resource base of an area are illustrated by developments and consumption statistics in the Toronto- centred region. There is an obvious need for a comprehensive survey of available resources in urban areas to serve as a guide in land-use planning. To fill this need, staff members of the Industrial Minerals Section, Geological Branch, Ontario Department of Mines and Northern Affairs, are engaged in mapping projects and mineral resource studies in southern Ontario as well as in some urban areas of northern Ontario."

Ghana currently exports its bauxite raw without any value addition. Gradual depletion of high grade bauxite (with high alumina content) and the emergence of low grade bauxite (with high iron oxide content) calls for novel and inexpensive ways to recover alumina from these low grade ores. Bauxite users have indicated their willingness to pay 10% to 50% higher for a corresponding reduction in impurities by a similar amount. This project therefore investigates the carbothermal upgrading of the Ghana Awaso bauxite using waste polypropylene as reductant in a locally designed gas-fired furnace. Composite pellets of low grade bauxite sample (assaying 45% Al2O3) containing pulverised waste polypropylene were formed, oven dried, placed in fireclay crucible and fired for 30 minutes. The magnetic fraction after reduction was separated by a Low Intensity Magnet and weighed. It was observed that up to 97% of the iron oxides (occurring as hematite and goethite) could be separated into the magnetic fraction as magnetite leaving a nonmagnetic fraction with over 98% Al2O3 as opposed to the 45% Al2O3 in the as-received bauxite sample. This research direction provides yet another simple but effective way for simultaneously upgrading low grade bauxite and recycling waste polypropylene, whilst at the same time decreasing the amount of waste material generated as red mud after the Bayer process.

The ASTM B108 Mould and a Modified Mould were used to cast test bars under a variety of conditions: mould and pouring temperatures, mould coating and tilt. Mechanical properties were determined in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The ASTM Mould is less sensitive to casting variables. Enlarging the gating system and adding additional gates to the ASTM mould can improve properties in the tilt position. The reproducibility of properties in as-cast and T6 heat treated bars was investigated.

"Like other operating mine sites, Placer Dome Inc. - Campbell Mine has taken important steps over the last few years to address environmental issues.This paper will provide specific insights into the implementation of an environmental management system at Campbell. In particular, it will focus on how Campbell developed its plan of action; the lessons that have been learned; the over-all steps that are being taken to enhance environmental stewardship and effectively manage relationships with key stakeholders.IntroductionThe development of an Environmental Management System at Campbell Mine has been part of a general development in management practices which has taken place at the mine during 1990. This paper will discuss the components of the management system in the topic areas of: direction setting; environmental organization; issue assessment; emergency response plan; training ; monitoring/verification; reporting and data management; and relationship management.Although this paper focuses on environmental management systems, the development of this system has partly been a function of responses to other issues which have been addressed concurrently with environmental concerns. These other issues include development of operations management, human resources practices, and safety management practices at the mine. As the Environmental Management System developed, various stakeholders associated with local environmental concerns were identified. This group of stakeholders include the local community; municipal, provincial and federal governments; government agencies; Campbell employees; and the Placer Dome Inc. Corporation."

Relationships of Noranda sulphide deposits to volcanic rocks are reviewed and chemical variations within the volcanic sequence are described. The assemblages of minor elements in the pyrites and pyrrhotites of the Noranda and l\llatagami deposits are similar and are characterized by a high content of cobalt, tin and other elements. Isotopic compositions of lead, other geochronological data and stratigraphically disposed zonal distributions of sulphides and minor elements indicate that the deposits were formed prior to folding and metamorphism. Lead isotope data indicate that the Matagami deposits, and several others, were probably formed about 2.95 x 109 years ago and that the Noranda deposits may be about 50 million years younger. The volcanic sequence at Noranda is younger than the thick sequences bordering it on the east and on the west. The relationships are consistent with the hypothesis that these strata-bound sul1>hide de-posits are coeval with their associated volcanic rocks. "The use of calcine for selective zinc precipitation requires specialist knowledge to achieve satisfactory flowsheet design. Calcine from the bed of a fluid roaster is preferred, and factors such as the size distribution of ground calcine, the stoichiometric ratio of the calcine precipitant to the initial dissolved zinc concentration and the moisture content of the resultant filter cake are parameters which require critical attention. Extensive testing in a fully-integrated electrolytic zinc plant pilot plant has demonstrated that properly designed selective zinc precipitation plants using calcine as the precipitant are reliable operating units.The advantages of using calcine instead of limestone for selective zinc precipitation include a decreased cost of reagents, as well as avoiding the formation of by-product gypsum.Process simulation modelling has demonstrated that the use of calcine in this context has widespread application in the design of zinc plants with superior impurity and water balance control characteristics. A particularly powerful approach involves closed circuit washing. In this mode, filtrate from the selective zinc precipitation step is used to wash a zinc plant residue such as jarosite, and the resulting filtrate is returned to the selective zinc precipitation section. IntroductionThe Selective Zinc Precipitation (SZP) Process, developed and patented by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) may be used to achieve simultaneously, water balance and impurity control in an electrolytic zinc plantO,2). Impurities which may be controlled by the SZP process include chlorine, magnesium, manganese, potassium and sodium.In the SZP process, basic zinc sulphate is precipitated from a zinc sulphate solution by either limestone, lime or a compound containing zinc oxide, usually calcined zinc sulphide concentrate (calcine) or alternatively zinc oxide fume .The solids containing basic zinc sulphate are separated, typically, by filtration and returned to the zinc plant circuit as a neutralizing agent. The zinc depleted solution can either be discarded, or used to wash residues, thereby achieving water balance and impurity control (Fig. I)."

THE Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, as a coal mining concern and as a steel industry, has much pumping to do, and the conditions are as varied as it is possible to make them. We are faced with handling large quantities of water at low heads, and small quantities of water at high heads. We have fresh water, we have salt water, and we have highly acidulous water (see Table II). Our pumping problems are concerned chiefly with mechanical reliability, continuous, reliable operation, first cost, and operating cost. The Corporation is actually expending more than 15 per cent of its power consumption at the mines in pumping water, and at the steel plant about 17 per cent; that is to say, 16 per cent of the Corporation's entire power consumption goes into pumping water ( see Table I). We are pumping out of the mines 2 ½ tons of water for every tan of coal that is produced. At the Steel Plant, we are pumping 188 tans of water for every ton of steel we produce. (See Tables III and IV). The mine is pumping at high heads, up to as high as 1,400 feet in one lift ; in the Steel Plant it is, fortunately, at lower heads, 250 feet or 110 lb. being the general maximum. It behooves us, therefore, to look into the question of efficiency. In whatever direction we can gain something, it will be worth while. The centrifugal pump is not an adaptable machine. That is, a pump designed for some particular location and purpose will not always work efficiently if installed in some other place and used for some other purpose. It must generally be designed for the particular job it has to do. Reciprocating pumps are not so sensitive. We have Cameron plunger pumps that can be set up almost anywhere in a mine and they will work, but for big jobs they are apt to be clumsy and the driving power becomes a factor- which is, in fact, the controlling factor in deciding the type of pump we use. One disadvantage of the a.c. induction motor, however, is that its speed cannot easily be controlled. At its rated speed and output, it is a highly efficient machine, but, with any change in these, its efficiency goes all to pieces.

"The combination of A C induction motor and flu id coupling, of either the fixed or variable filling type, constitutes a simple, low cost, highly reliable drive unit, with many applications in the mining field.The paper will, however, concentrate on the variable filling fluid coupling in three principal applications-conveyor starting, infinitely variable speed control for slurry and slimes pumping and dewatering pumps for deep mines. Fluid couplings can be used with standard or custom-built control gear equipment, ranging from the most simple, time-based open loop types, to those having the latest microprocessor techniques.IntroductionThe first industrial applications of fluid couplings included their use in the mining field as hydraulic slip regulators for flywheel generating sets. These installations, usually rated at around 1700 to 2500 hp, were located at mine shafts where the electrical grid transmission lines were not strong enough to cater for the peak power demands of the cage winding cycle. In Canada, the first two significant examples of variable filling fluid couplings for mining were on conveyor drives, at Steep Rock Mines Limited, closely followed by the major iron ore handling term inal on the St. Lawrence River at Sept-Iles. Successful and reliable operat ion of the fluid couplings at these two sites set the pattern for use on many subsequent mining projects throughout the Canadian Continent."

Luscar Stereo commenced construction of the mine at Coal Valley, Alberta, in August, 1976. It is designed to produce approximately 2.5 million clean short tons of steam coal annually - 2.0 million tons per year being committed to Ontario Hydro and 0.5 million tons per year being committed to Neptune Terminals for sale on the export market. The project involves constructing a heavy-media coal preparation plant, erecting a 42-cubic-yard dragline, constructing a shop/office complex, and developing three surface mining zones and associated facilities. As there were no existing facilities in the Coal Valley area, it was necessary to establish access roads, an airstrip, temporary utilities, fuel supplies, a construction camp, rail upgrading and communication services.

"The structural design of mine headframes is challenging due to the significant differences in the geometry, rigidity, and behaviour of these structures compared to conventional buildings. The differences are related to the main purpose of these structures, which is not human occupancy, but rather the support of hoisting equipment. The main objective of this paper is to present the seismic elastic behaviour of headframe structures in comparison with conventional buildings, which is the base case for the definition of seismic loads. This paper highlights the impact of backlegs on the dynamic behaviour of mine headframes, more specifically the resulting torsional sensitivity. INTRODUCTION The design of industrial structures is often governed by industrial processes rather than by architectural constraints. In ground-mounted hoisting plants, the structural configuration of headframes must allow clearances around conveyances and ropes while resisting the lateral loads associated with the hoisting equipment. Typically, these structures use backlegs to withstand the lateral loads, which leads to highly irregular structures with unconventional dynamic behaviour. The codes and standards applicable to the structural design of mine headframes in Canada are often incomplete or not adapted to the reality of practising engineers. This situation creates confusion, and engineers must look at various guidelines and international standards to support the engineering calculations required for the design of these structures. The loads resulting from the support of hoisting equipment, such as ropes and conveyances, are usually simple to calculate and are determined based on the information from manufacturer and industry related guidelines. Moreover, the loads associated with snow accumulation and wind are calculated applying the same methodology used for conventional buildings, without any major issues. On the other hand, the seismic loads are often difficult to calculate based on the methodology from the National Building Code of Canada due to the significant differences in the dynamic behaviour of the structures. The resulting structures may be either over-designed or worse, under-designed. Hence, there is a lack of uniformity in engineers’ designs. The latest edition of CSA S16-14 “Design of steel structures” includes Annex M (Informative) “Seismic design of industrial steel structures” to help designers close the gap between the requirements of traditional regulations and actual engineering practice."

The Águas Claras and Pico mines are two world-class, iron-ore mines hosted within Lower- Proterozoic banded iron-formations (locally known as itabirites) of the Minas Supergroup located in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero District, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Águas Claras orebody consists of a 2,500 m long roughly tabular-shaped lens hosted within the dolomitic itabirite of the Cauê Formation. Dolomitic itabirite is the protore of the soft high-grade iron ore, which is the main ore type of the Águas Claras orebody, and represents more than 85% of the 284 Mt mined since 1973. Hematite is the main constituent of the iron ores. It occurs as martite, granular hematite and, locally, as specularite. Magnetite appears subordinately as relicts within martite and hematite crystals. Gangue minerals are very rare. These consist of dolomite, chlorite, talc and apatite and are especially common close to the contact with the protore. This virtual absence of gangue minerals is reflected in the chemistry of ores which are characterized by very high Fe contents (an average of 68.2% Fe). The Pico orebody is a continuous ~3,000 m long body of lenticular shape hosted within quartz itabirite, which is the protore of the soft high- and low-grade ores at the Pico mine. The soft high-grade ores, together with the low-grade ores, called iron-rich itabirite, are the main types of ores at the Pico mine, respectively representing approximately 51 % and 29 % of the reserves within the pit. The iron oxide mineralogy is the same as that of the Águas Claras mine, but in different proportions. Gangue minerals are very rare in the high-grade ores, but are slightly more common in the iron-rich itabirite. Quartz is the dominant gangue mineral, and is found with minor quantities of chlorite. The chemistry of the high-grade ores is characterized by high Fe contents (an average of 67.0 %) and low P, Al2O3, and SiO2 which are concentrated in the fines. Iron rich itabirites average 58.6% Fe and 13.5% SiO2.

"Arsenic is widely known as a toxic element for humans, animals and plants. Because of more stringent wastewater standards not only in Japan but also around the world, research for appropriate and efficient treatment method for arsenic is becoming increasingly important. Coprecipitation or adsorption process using ferrihydrite is widely implemented for dilute As(V) removal from wastewater. In this study, the sorption mechanism of dilute As(V) with ferrihydrite in coprecipitation or adsorption process was investigated. To accomplish this, we conducted batch experiments of coprecipitation or adsorption and compared these results for sorption isotherm and zeta potential. These experimental results showed that sorption mechanism in coprecipitation process depends on the initial As/Fe molar ratio; simple twodimensional adsorption onto the surface of ferrihydrite when the initial As/Fe molar ratio was < 0.4, and some three-dimensional uptake with ferrihydrite when it was = 0.4. We also evaluated the sorption mechanim by analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS). XRD or XAFS spectra showed that surface precipitation of amorphous ferric arsenate was formed when the initial as/Fe molar ratio was = 0.4, beyond the thermodynamic bulk precipitation range for ferric arsenate.INTRODUCTIONArsenic is toxic to animals, including humans, and long-term exposure to arsenic via drinkingwater causes cancer of the skin, lungs, urinary bladder, and kidneys, as well as other effects on the skin such as changes in pigmentation and thickening (Ghosha et al., 2008). Elevated levels of arsenic are often present in the environment as a result of the weathering and dissolution of minerals as well as in response to numerous anthropogenic sources including the discharge of mine wastes, coal fly ash and the use of pesticides that contain arsenic (Nriagu, 1994; Singh et al., 2007). Indeed, the potential for arsenic exposure affects many people, as evidenced by several million people in Bangladesh and India being at risk of exposure via drinking water obtained from contaminated groundwater sources (Ahmed, 2001).Acid mine drainage (AMD) containing arsenic is a global environmental problem (Dold, 2008; Liang and Thomson, 2008) that also affects Japan, which has many abandoned or closed mines that have been generating AMD for the last few decades (Masuda et al., 2008). Several such facilities in Japan produce AMD containing dilute concentrations of arsenic that exceed Japanese effluent standards (0.1 mg/dm3) (METI, 2006). For example, AMD from the abandoned Horobetsu sulfur mine, the largest AMD source in Japan, contains approximately 10 mg/dm3 arsenic."

The flotation mill of Dentonia Mines, Limited, at Greenwood, B.C., went into operation on April 20th, 1934, and by October 11th a total of 15,000 tons of ore had been treated. It is intended in this paper to describe briefly the operation and to give some of the operating data which have been gathered. The metallic minerals in the Dentonia ore are pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, and, occasionally, native gold, and the gangue includes chloritic material, vein quartz, and calcite. Pyrite makes up about 90 per cent of the metallic content of the ore, in which it is disseminated as irregular grains and well-formed cubes. An average analysis of the ore is: gold, 0.27 oz. per ton; silver, 1.73 oz. per ton; copper, 0.12 per cent; lead, 0.31 per cent; and zinc, trace. From the mine ore-bin, situated near the portal of the tunnel at the mine, the ore is hauled by motor truck to the mill, a distance of three-quarters of a mile, and there dumped into the receiving bin, which has a capacity of fifty tons. The hauling is done during one eight-hour shift, commencing at 7 a.m. The maximum size of the ore fed to the mill-bin is ten inches. Lumps larger than this are broken by sledge hammer to pass through grizzly bars, spaced ten inches apart, installed above the bin. The ore is drawn from the bin by a 30-inch, 6-ply conveyor belt, 18 feet 6 inches long. In the near future, when the cross-cut tunnel is completed, the ore will be trammed to the receiving bin. This will effect a considerable saving in cost. At the same time, the bin will be set back several feet, so that the length of the conveyor belt may be doubled. This will make efficient ore-sorting possible, and so ensure a minimum of waste rock in the mill feed.
