Recent drilling programs have shown that the in-situ coal resources of Nova Scotia are very substantial. The grand totals of the measured, indicated and inferred categories amount to 232 m, 646m and 993 m tons, respectively. This vast quantity of coal occurs essentially in five main fields: Sydney, Mabou, Port Hood, Pictou and Springhill. The largest resources (84% of the total) occur in the submarine area of the Sydney coalfield. With a 65% recovery rate, there are at present 150m tons of proven, recoverable coal in Nova Scotia. At a predicted maximum annual production of 5 m tons, this amount equals a lifespan of 30 years. However, additional drilling, particularly in the Sydney offshore area, holds promise of increasing the recoverable reserve tonnage to at least 350 m tons. This figure may be compared with the 484 m tons production obtained during 191 years of mining (from 1785-1976). The geological appraisal of the remaining coal resources in the five fields mentioned is presented in three-dimensional diagrams, per individual seam and corresponding reserve area. In addition, the submarine extensions of the Sydney and Mabou coalfields are discussed in light of results obtained from off shore oil exploration wells. The terminology and standards of coal resource calculations are pointed out, and the phenomenon of seam splitting and its prediction from geological data is illustrated. The availability in Nova Scotia of either thermal or metallurgical coal is considered in relation to rank and sulphur content. This paper was presented in June 1977 at the 90th Annual Meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia. The coal resource estimates, however, have been updated to include the results obtained with the offshore drilling in the Sydney Coalfield to November 1977.

The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. In the past decade, as a result of increasing iron loads, Canadian Electrolytic Zinc (CEZinc) has become a pioneer in understanding the critical factors that affect the roasting of concentrates with high pyrite contents as well as those factors governing the effects of high iron loads on the leaching circuit. De-bottlenecking efforts in the roaster and acid plant section of CEZinc have given rise to a better appreciation of the impact of iron on roaster productivity. High standards for impure solution quality, zinc recoveries and residue disposal have all led to an increased comprehension of the limits of the leaching circuit and the optimization potentials with respect to iron and ferrites. In this paper, the impact of iron on the roasting and leaching circuits of CEZinc will be reviewed and special emphasis will be given to some of the more recent process optimization and improvement activities.

"Mine Gallen is a zinc-rich pyritic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit that occurs in a fault-bounded block of intermediate volcanic rocks. The block is completely surrounded at the present erosion level by the eastern part of the Lac Dufault granodiorite. The volcanic succession includes a massive feldspar porphyry that is probably a subvolcanic intrusion, an andesitic flow unit and lapilli tuffs. The latter are variably sericitized and pyritic, especially in the vicinity of the massive sulphide into which they grade.The ore body is predominantly pyritewith local sphalerite contents as high as 20%; minor chalcopyrite and trace galena are disseminated, but are found mainly along late cleavage. Most ore is a breccia of massive to banded pyrite-sphalerite, veined by massive and complexly banded sulphides. These structures formed by repeated blocky jointing, cracking, sealing, healing and annealing as hydrothermal fluid repeatedly passed through a developing sulphide mound. The deposit is interpreted to have grown on the seafloor in a manner similar to active mounds in the Galapagos rift.RESUME La Mine Gallen exploite un gisement de sulfures massifs volcan géniques comprenant essentiellement de la pyrite riche en zinc. "AbstractAttention is drawn to the ventilation problems arising from the use of diesel vehicles underground, especially in view of the fact that diesel fumes in combination with other pollutants may be more harmful than diesel fumes alone or the other pollutants alone.Means for minimizing the harmful effects of using diesels underground are listed, and the quantities of air' required in mines in which diesel-powered vehicles are used are discussed. Mines are classified in three categories on the basis of severity of ventilation problems, and statistics are given for these categories.Details of the various components contributing to total ventilation needs are given, and the ventilation needs of individual mines in the three categories are listed. "A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. La presence de grains de feldspath-K et d'amphibole est inhabituelle comparativement aux arenites quartziques typiques de l’Athabasca; initialement, ces mineraux constituaient probablement des inclusions dans le quartz detritique qui ont ete subsequemment liberees pendant la fracturation. Les textures et les caracteristiques de l'alteration suggerent que cette unite a subi une fracturation hydraulique et a ete alteree par un fluide hydrothermal - possiblement en lien avec les effets distaux de mise en place de la mineralisation en l'uranium."

"The similar flotability of scheelite, fluorite, and calcite resulted in the difficult separation by flotation. This work revealed the effect of water glass on the flotation of scheelite by FTIR and the wettability change of the usual cleavage plane, and proved that water glass inevitably influenced the flotation of tungsten minerals to a large extend in traditional fatty acid flotation process. A new collector, benzohydroxamic acid complexes, was found to be selective for the separation of scheelite and calcium minerals with little water glass. Hence a novel flotation process was developed for the recovery of tungsten minerals in shizhuyuan mine in China. Normal temperature flotation of tungsten minerals was developed to instead of the classical “Petrov's process” for scheelite-calcite-fluorite type ores. Compared with the traditional process, the recovery was improved by 10% and the grade of scheelite concentrate was above 55%. The disappearance or decreasing of water glass contributed to improving the recovery of tungsten and fluorite and the circulation of water and reagents.INTRODUCTIONChina is rich in tungsten resources and the proved reserves accounted for 60% of the world's reserves (Cai Gaipin et al., 2009). However the wolframite has been dried up and the scheelite resource has become the main resource of the tungsten metal. Scheelite deposits were classified to scheelite-silicate type and scheelite-calcite-fluorite type based on the associated gangue minerals. Scheelite was easy to separate from the silicate minerals. Flotation separation of scheelite from calcium minerals creates difficulties because of the existence of the same cation in the minerals and similar physicochemical characteristics such as solubility, hardness, specific gravity, PZC (point of zero charge) etc.(Arnold & Warren, 1974; Yongxin & Changgen, 1983; Ozcan & Bulutcu, 1993a; Deng et al., 2015, 2016;). The conventional collectors used in the flotation of scheelite ores are generally fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives ( Yongxin & Changgen, 1983; Oliveira & Sampaio, 1988; Sivamohan, 1988; Shi et al., 2014; Bo et al., 2015). It is difficult to separate scheelite especially from calcite with these reagents because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface (Atademir et al., 1979; Changgen and Yongxin, 1983; Hiçyìlmaz et al., 1993; Hu et al., 2011). Therefore, it is almost impossible to separate them by fatty acid flotation without using any selective depressant. Although oleoyl sarcosine was used as a selective collector in the flotation of fluorite and siliceous scheelite ores (Ozcan & Bulutcu, 1993b; Ozcan et al., 1994), this selectivity is not adequate for a low-grade calcitic scheelite ore. Unfortunately, the reagents such as organic colloids (dextrine, starch), quebracho, sodium phosphates, sodium silicate solutions containing polyvalent cations (hydrosols), etc. (Yongxin and Changgen, 1983; Schubert et al., 1990; Shi et al., 2014; Bo et al., 2015) used for calcite depression also depress scheelite to a large extent."

This report presents a review of the distribution and exploration potential of platinum-group elements (PGE) in Québec; it is based on published and unpublished analytical data. This qualitative evaluation of the PGE potential, whether in PGE-dominant deposits or in Ni-Cu-dominant deposits with co-product PGE, is based on interelement ratios such as Ni/Pd, Cu/Ir, Cu/Pt, and Cu/Pd. Good PGE targets, i.e., deposits associated with magmas fertile in PGE, are identified. Less favorable PGE targets, i.e., deposits associated with PGE-depleted magmas, are also mentioned. The importance of exploring for deposits similar to those at lac des Îles and East Bull Lake (Ontario) is emphasized.

This paper presents a novel model to assess the risk of adjacent buildings in tunnelling environments based on Extended Cloud Model (ECM). ECM is an organic integration of Extension Theory (ET) and Cloud Model (CM), where ET is appropriately employed to flexibly expand the variable range from [0, 1] to (-8, +8), and CM is used to overcome the randomness and fuzziness during the gradation of evaluation factors. The risk level of a specific adjacent building is assessed by the correlation with the cloud models. A confidence indicator ? is proposed to illustrate the rationality and reliability of evaluating results. Ten buildings adjacent to Wuhan Metro Line Two (WMLT) are randomly chosen among hundreds of adjacent buildings for a case study. Results have proved to be consistent with the actual situation. Compared with other traditional evaluation methods, ECM has been verified to be a more competitive solution with high calculation accuracy, wide adaptability, as well as simplified computer programming. There are no stringent requirements on the quantity of training data during the modelling process, and the original data can be directly entered into ECM without a normalization procedure, avoiding the potential information loss. ECM can be offered as a decision support tool for the risk assessment in urban tunnelling construction and worth popularizing in other similar complicated projects.

Medium and low carbon steels, modified with uranium, were studied in order to evaluate the influence of uranium on forge ability, mechanical 11roperties, response to heat treatment and microstructure. Uranium contents ranged up to 0.70 per cent. The medium carbon steels are hot short if the uranium content exceeds about 0.35 per cent. More uranium can be tolerated in low carbon steels. The hot shortness is caused by the formation of intergranular phase UFe2. Critical transformation temperatures, Jominy hardenability, and resistance to tempering are not significantly affected by the 11resence of uranium. Similarly, uranium has little or no effect on the tensile properties of carbon steels. The addition of uranium has a favourable effect 11n the stress-rupture characteristics and some beneficial effect on fatigue properties. However, more results are required for verification. In the steels investigated, it seems that most of the uranium carbide combines to form complex inclusions of U (0, C, N) or (C, N), rich in oxygen or nitrogen or both.

This can be accomplished in three major ways: 1.Screening or sizing 2.-Mixrng or blending 3.-Cleaning By combinations of any or all of these methods we can prepare coal to meet standard specifications-a process of standardization which is the more desirable the more nearly it approaches the unvarying quality of packaged goods, where the package you buy today and tomorrow is the same as that you bought yesterday. It should be noted that it is readily possible to get good cleaning and still have poor preparation because of faulty screening and mixing, and, on the other hand, it is possible to get a passable grade of cleaning, combined with good screening and mixing facilities.

Simulation techniques have offered significant boosts toward a cost-and-time-optimized planning of construction projects by enabling project managers to effectively comprehend the behavior of projects. Using historic data from projects of like nature, simulation considers uncertainties involved in a project through accommodating the stochastic modeling parameters. However, the heavy reliance on the statistical data and not taking into account the context-specific features of the project cause the degradation in the realism and accuracy of the simulation models. Similarly, the extent to which a historic pattern could be retrofitted to new projects will decrease in line with the growing uniqueness of the projects and the novelty of construction methods. Furthermore, the existing real-time simulation frameworks are not capable of distinguishing the transient environmental changes, with minimal long-term impacts on the productivity, from the influential changes that will greatly impact an operation. In addition, existing simulation tools are devoid of location awareness, resulting in the inability to consider safety threats in their representation of the project. To address these issues, this research proposes a framework based on the integration of new tracking technologies used in Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) with simulation-driven 4D modeling methods. The proposed framework automates the adjustment of the simulation model based on the updated data from the site, and thus transforms simulation from a predictive tool used at the planning phase to a proactive monitoring platform usable throughout the planning and construction phases. A prototype is developed to test and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

"Abstract - The 12.1 Mt Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposit (New Brunswick, Canada) lies between two subaqueous felsic volcanic formations near the base of the Middle Ordovician Tetagouche Group. The footwall comprises rhyodacitic pyroclastic rocks (Nepisiguit Falls Formation), whereas the hanging wall comprises a sequence of rhyolitic flows, breccias, and hyaloclastites (Flat Landing Brook Formation), with an age difference of less than 3 m.y. The Brunswick No. 6 deposit is a proximal autochthonous deposit with a well-zoned massive sulfide body and a basal Cu zone that, at depth, develops into a stockwork stringer sulfide (feeder) system. The massive sulfides are capped sharply by a layered magnetite-chert unit that extends regionally beyond the deposit. The deposit has a keel shape (sheath) formed by the F1F2 interference pattern. The heterogeneous ductile deformation and upper greenschist-grade regional metamorphism has transposed many of the epigenetic stockwork structures and alteration within the host sequence. Hydrothermal alteration is much more extensive, both vertically and laterally, in the footwall (a few 100 m) than in the hanging wall (<100 m). Anomalies farther up in the hanging wall sequence seem to be associated with independent alteration systems related to the rhyolite domes. The least-altered footwall units exhibit keratophyric alteration (albite or adularia) and weak Mg enrichment (chlorite). More intense micaceous (sericite and Mg-rich chlorite) alteration occurs around the footwall sequence. The transposed stockwork stringer sulfides are typically composed of Fe-rich chlorite (± sericite, ± silica) with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and sphalerite. The (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) and base metal alteration indices are the best practical lithogeochemical vectoring tools at this deposit. Le mur consiste en roches pyroclastiques rhyodacitiques (Formation de Nepisiguit Falls) tandis que le toit consiste en une séquence de coulées, de brèches et d’hyaloclastites de composition rhyolitique (Formation de Flat Landing Brook); la différence d’âge entre les deux est de moins de 3 m.y. Le gisement Brunswick No. 6 est un gîte autochtone proximal comprenant un corps de sulfures massifs clairement zoné ainsi qu’une zone cuprifère basale qui passe progressivement à un stockwork de filonnets de sulfure en profondeur (feeder). Les sulfures massifs sont abruptement surmontés d’une unité laminaire de chert et de magnétite dont l’extension par delà le gisement est régionale. Le gisement affecte la forme d’une quille (fourreau) résultant d’un patron d’interférence F1F2. Plusieurs des structures épigénétiques du stockwork et des patrons d’altération de l’encaissant ont été transposés par la déformation ductile hétérogène ainsi que par le métamorphisme régional au faciès des schistes verts. L’altération hydrothermale est beaucoup plus importante, tant verticalement qu’horizontalement, dans le mur (quelques 100 m) que dans le toit (<100 m). Les anomalies situées plus haut dans le mur semblent être reliées à des systèmes d’altération indépendants associés aux dômes de rhyolite. Les unités les moins altérées du mur une altération kératophyrique (en albite ou en adulaire) ainsi qu’un faible enrichissement en Mg (chlorite). Une altération en mica (séricite et chlorite magnésienne) plus intense est présente autour de la séquence du mur. Les sulfures du stockwork de filonnets transposés consistent typiquement en chlorite ferrifère (± séricite, ± silice) accompagnée de pyrite, de pyrrhotite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite et de sphalérite. L’indice d’altération (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) et l’indice des métaux usuels sont les outils d’exploration les plus appropriés dans ce gisement."

The JKRBT (JK Rotary Breakage Tester) is a newly developed impact breakage testing device for rapid ore breakage characterisation, and has recently been commercialised after a three year comprehensive validation study, involving five major mining companies and six industrialised JKRBT units deployed worldwide. Comparisons of breakage mechanisms and characterisation data between the JKRBT and the Drop Weight Tester (DWT) indicate that, despite the differences in the breakage modes, the JKRBT can provide statistically similar A*b parameters, by using a data reduction procedure which takes into account the difference in the number of contact points, strain rate and potential for secondary breakage. Feedback from the validation sponsors has indicated higher productivity and better repeatability of the JKRBT compared with the DWT. This better precision, combined with the JKRBT?s wider particle size capability and wider specific energy range, provide a more powerful tool, ideally suited to rapid mapping of ore hardness in geometallurgical and comminution applications.

"The gently-dipping Devonian dolomite beds south of Great Slave lake in northern Canada are nearly every-where concealed by a cover of glacial drift and muskeg. Nevertheless, in 1898 or earlier, four small outcropping areas of dolomite, richly mineralized with lead and zinc sulphides, were discovered. Exploration work performed here up to the end of 1930, included intensive trenching and drilling of the showings, together with mapping and wide-spaced drilling in the surrounding region. This work proved that the discoveries are isolated pockets of mineralization much too small to be commercially valuable by themselves. No evidence of orebodies elsewhere was reported.Meanwhile, mapping by the G.S.C. in the Shield far to the east disclosed major Precambrian faults, some of which can be projected southwesterly (under a cover of Paleozoic sediments) to the vicinity of Pine Point. During the period from 1940 to 1947, consideration was given, by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd., to evidence of a theoretical possibility that, although apparently dormant in Paleozoic times, these faults may have provided a structural control and a source of ore-bearing solutions in some post-Devonian period. From this, it was postulated that the breaks might have created, in the overlying dolomite, a linear array of orebodies concealed by overburden but lying in a belt of considerable length and in a position predictable within practical limits. A program of drilling designed to test and exploit this specific concept was conducted from 1948 to 1955.he drilling within the new, theoretically-defined search area resulted in the discovery of many lead-zinc ore-bodies, none of which was exposed at the surface. Some of these are large and (as indicated by 1965 production records) very rich. They are situated 1 to several miles distant from, and apparently not connected to, the earlier-known surface discoveries. The drilling also disclosed that the ore, which consists of disseminated sphalerite and galena replacements together with colloform sphalerite and coarse galena cavity fillings, occurs mainly at certain stratigraphic horizons within a large, coarsely-recrystallized dolomite barrier reef. Considerable fracturing and folding was found. It has been suggested that reef development was influenced by post-Precambrian tectonic movements associated with the old faults in the basement complex. The ore may have been deposited by solutions moving from distant sources to favourable structural and chemical environments in or related to the reef.In more recent exploration performed in the course of preparing for mining production, the rate of ore discovery within the same general geological context has been greatly accelerated by the use of new geophysical techniques and drilling equipment. Reserves of 21.5 million tons, averaging 4 per cent lead and 7.2 per cent zinc, were reported in 1965, and production from open pits at the rate of approximately 248,000 tons of concentrates per year is in progress"

Any attempt, therefore, to appraise the international situation today must take into consideration the metal and mineral resources of the world. If, as some believe, the world is divided into two distinct ideologies of political belief, one unalterably opposed to the other, so that armed conflict is unavoidable, then the question of national strength in mineral resources becomes of paramount importance. If, however, it is possible to avoid war by raising the standard of living in the underdeveloped ?areas of the world, thus ensuring all peoples everywhere against the dread spectres of starvation and disease, then the development of the world&apos;s mineral resources assumes even greater importance. Today it is difficult to realize that, prior to the industrial revolution in Great Britain, only a few of the metals and minerals now in common use entered into the everyday life of the people. !iron and steel, copper, lead, tin, and zinc, usually in .their unalloyed forms, along with the more common industrial minerals, were those most widely used, and then only in limited amount. With the advance of technology in metallurgy and in fabricating skills, the list of commercial metals and minerals has expanded until today they number more than eighty.

"The by-product potential of light rare-earth elements (LREE, La, Ce, Nd) and rare-metals (W, Nb, Sn) within the St Austell kaolin deposits (UK) is related to the kaolinisation process, which liberates the accessory heavy minerals of the host granite in the clay matrix and allows their separation in the waste streams. As a consequence these minerals are pre-concentrated in the micaceous residue which displays relatively high LREE content (around 170 ppm) hosted by monazite which is mainly distributed (up to 95%) in the -100 µm fraction. A combined gravity/flotation concentration flowsheet, starting with classification of the residue into 3 size fractions (+150 µm, 150-53 µm and -53µm) was developed. This study presents the results of the clay-rich -53 µm size fraction beneficiation by flotation using sodium oleate and hydroxamate as collectors.The effect of dispersant addition during de-sliming operations on flotation efficiency was also investigated. The LREE grade in the floated product obtained with sodium oleate increased from 3370 ppm to 5350 ppm and recovery from 30% to 80% with dispersant which is attributed to clay coating. Comparison of flotation performance and Falcon Ultra-Fine (UF) concentration of monazite to previous results obtained with Falcon Semi-Batch (SB) gravity concentrator on the unscreened raw residue clearly shows that flotation of the fine residue is more efficient than Falcon UF and Falcon SB. Indeed Falcon UF produced high recoveries (87-95%) but with almost no enrichment (1.3-1.4 ratios) whereas Falcon SB concentration of unscreened residue produced higher grades (up to 0.6 % LREE) but with low recoveries (17-22 %). These preliminary results show that LREE can be pre-concentrated suggesting that the micaceous residue stream (and the associated tailings dams) could be considered as a potential resource for these metals."

"Audrey Resources' Mobrun Mine is located in Dufresnoy Township some 30 km to the northeast of Rouyn-Noranda. The Mobrun tine deposits consist of two major massive sulphide lenses; the newly discovered 1100 lens located 450 m south of the Main zone, and one ntellite lens, the 850-870-930 complex.The 1100 lens is hosted in a large pyroclastic unit bounded to the mouth by rhyolite and andesite flows and by a thick rhyolite unit to the art h. stratigraphically belon the three lenses. It consists of approximately 15 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 10.4 Mt are of economic ade. The Main lens lies comformably above thick rhyolite flows, ecciated and pyritized by the sulphide horizon, and is overlain by ttercalated ash tuffs and rhyolites which host the over-lying satellite ns. The Main lens consists of 3,3 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 523 000 tgrade0.80% Cu, 2.44%Zn,30.19 g/t Ag, and2.2 g/t Au he richer satellite lens (180 000 t) is part of the same volcanic stem and resulted from a resurgence of hydrothermal activity. ructure played a role in the final geometry of the deposits but did not eatly affect the volcanogenic and stratabound nature of the lens. Total production since the start of operations in 1985 amounts to 58 000 t and is restricted to the Main lens. La lentille Principale repose sur d’épaisses coulées rhyolitiques brechifiees et pyritisees à proximité de l’horizon de sulfures; elle est recouverte de tufs a cendres et de rhyolites interlitees qui contiennent la lentille satellite. La lentille Principale est constitute de 3,3 M t de sulfures massifs dont 1 523 000 t sont économiques avec une teneur moyenne de 0,80% Cu, 2,44% Zn, 30,19 g/t Ag, et 2,2 glt Au. Faisant partie de ce second épisode volcanique, la riche lentille satellite (180 000 t) temoigne d’une recrudescence de l’activité hydrothermale. La structure joue un rôle important dans la géométrie finale des dépôts mais ellen' affecte pas, de fa~on significative, la nature volcan génique des lentilles. Depuis le début des opérations, en 1985, la production totale est d’environ 568 000 t, provenant essentiellement de la lentille Principale. La mise en production de la lentille 1100 est prévue pour 1992, alors que les réserves des lentilles Principale et Satellite seront probablement épuisés."
