It is a peculiar anomaly that while the world uses the term "rich as a gold mine" as the superlative figure of speech descriptive of wealth, the shares of gold mines are not as popular investments in America as certain of them should be. One of the most able of Manhattan's bankers is a director in an investment trust with a portfolio the value of which has gone the way of other such portfolios. Luckily a couple of years ago a few hundred shares of Homestake were purchased, and since then the trust has not only received therefrom satisfactory dividends but has benefitted from a large appreciation in their value. At each directors' meeting, however, the banker in question, Cato-like, suggests the sale of these shares, gold shares being, in his opinion, too speculative to be included in the portfolio of any trust. A short time ago the financial pages of one of our great metropolitan papers featured an article listing the corporations still paying dividends at the 1929 rate. Gold-mining shares were, the article stated, excluded, although in reality every gold mine on the New York Stock Exchange paid higher dividends in 1932 than in 1929. This 'Alice in Wonderland' treatment of the gold-mining shares is admittedly a bit confusing to those of us who believe that the shares of certain gold-mining companies have a rightful place in any well diversified portfolio. It should, however, here be recorded that whereas, fifty years ago, in America, gold-mining shares were considered by the public as instruments of nefarious gambling, now shares of the better gold mines are sought by astute investors. In England for well over a generation their value as sound investments has been widely recognized.

"Aiming at the problems of the existing calculation methods for the support pressures of shallow tunnels in layered jointed rock strata, by using OAT (orthogonal array testing strategy) and DEM (distinct element method), 12 influencing factors including the thickness of the weathered overburden, and the states of the rock joints were considered. Then, the classification of the loosening zone was analysized. On this basis, by using the DEA (data envelopment analysis) theory, quantitative analysis on the influencing factors was conducted. By analyzing the influence of the key factors, a prediction formula of the boundary of the ringent trumpet-shaped loosening zone was established. According to principles of stress transformation, the formula of support pressures of the loosening zone which could considering the key factors were deduced. Finally, a practical case was introduced and studied to verify the proposed method.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, various urban subway tunnels are increasingly carried out through jointed rock strata in many cities. Rock masses are discontinuous mediums with fissures, fractures, joints, bedding planes, and faults. The frequency of joints, their orientation with respect to the engineering structures, and the roughness of the joint have a significant importance from the stability point of view. However, there is a lack of understanding about the influence of the joints on the stability of tunnels. Therefore, how to measure the degree of the joints’ influence is a problem that needs to be solved.For the calculation of the support pressures, until now, many research results were focused on soil ground (Bierbäumer 1913; Terzaghi, 1943; Peck, 1969; Sabatini et al., 1999). In terms of site tests and model indoor tests, by measuring strut loads and calculating earth pressure based on strut spacing, the results proposed by Peck (1969) and Tschebotarioff (1973) have been widely used in practice for designing excavation support systems under sand (drained) and clay (undrained) soil conditions. Note that, it is unclear whether these findings could be extended to rock strata. For numerical simulations, how to simulate the states of the rock joints is a key problem that needs to be solved."

"Excavation, the principal mining process, 'which hitherto has been based largely on the intuition and logic of mining men, is increasingly receiving the attention of engineers and scientists versed in rock mechanics. The paper intro-duce the principles of this science in simplified form, directed both to underground and open-pit mining. Reference is made to the large annual tonnage from ore and rock excavations, which in 1967 were responsible for 250 million tons of mineral production in Canada.The urge to transform excavation into a continuous instead of an interrupted process is discussed with references to the various types of energies employed or proposed in rock breakage or excavation. Due to the rapid decay of applied energy in the discontinuous and heterogeneous rock environment, large confined blasts proposed for in-situ mining do not give much expectation of success as yet. Raises and ventilating shafts are already bored in reasonably hard rock. Tunnelling machines will be used for drifting and cross-cutting in the future, but continuous mining machines of the cuttmg and shearing type are not 'around the corner' for stoping typical orebodies. On the other hand, bed mining, particularly of coal, has led the way in continuous mining, and Remotely Operated Long-wall Face (ROLF) experiments are progressing in an encouraging way. Some reflections on the mining environment in relation to the human element are made."

The paper provides the most recent information on the construction of the AP60 phase 1 plant of Jonquiere which is due to be commissioned and started up in the first quarter of 2013. HSE management on site by RTA, and cooperation with local equipment manufacturers and contractors of the Saguenay-Lac Saint Jean region are highlighted in this section. The AP60 phase 1 Jonquiere plant aims to demonstrate of the AP60 technology at an industrial scale and allows the further developments of the AP60 cell. The advantages of the AP60 cell technology in terms of productivity, power consumption and environmental footprint are also briefly presented in the paper.

"Mineable coal seams in the East Kootenay region belong to the Mist Mountain Formation of the Jurassic -Cretaceous Kootenay Group. Three structurally separate coal fields (Crowsnest, Elk Valley and Flathead) are recognized, all of which are characterized by compressional tectonic features such as f aiding and thrust faulting, and by /ate-stage normal faulting. Tectonic history has greatly influenced coal mineability and quality. Coals range in rank from low to highvolatile bituminous, and reactive maceral content ranges from less than 60% to greater than 90%. A wide range of metallurgical and thermal coal qualities is found. Measured reserves (up to 1981) include 1.03 billion metric tonnes metallurgical and 165 million metric tonnes thermal coal. Introduction a) Location -Coal fields of the East Kootenays region occur in the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains, within 30 km of the Alberta -British Columbia boundary (Fig. 1). They extend over 175 km north from near the U.S. border, and occupy the regions of the Crowsnest Pass and Elk and Flathead River drainages. The deposits are accessible from Highway 3 (Fig. 1) and various secondary roads. The towns of Fernie, Sparwood, Elkford, Coleman and Blairmore serve the coal industry. East Kootenay coal deposits are contained in three structurally separate coal fields, the Crowsnest, Elk Valley, and Flathead coal fields (Fig. 1). Coal is currently being produced by B.C. Coal (now Westar Mining Ltd.) at Sparwood, by Fording Coal 20 km north of Elkford, by Crows Nest Resources at Line Creek 15 km southeast of Elkford, and by Byron Creek Collieries at Corbin. Westar Mining has also constructed a new mine on the Greenhills Range 8 km northeast of Elkford. Pre-requisite engineering and environmental studies have been carried out on the Elco Mining property, 35 km north of Elkford, and on the Sage Creek coal property near the U.S. border (Fig. 1). b) Coal land tenure -Coal rights in the East Kootenays are either held as freehold land, or are licensed from the provincial government. The former category includes lands acquired under the Railroad Act of 1890. Shortly after this the federal government also obtained 50,000 acres of coal-bearing lands from the Crown Provincial, the so-called Dominion Government Coal Blocks. Major holders of coal rights in the area are Westar Mining and Crows Nest Resources. Large blocks are also held by Fording Coal and related companies, Sage Creek Coal, and Canada Permanent Trust Company as trustee for Elco Mining, and small blocks are held by Byron Creek Collieries and Coleman Collieries. In addition the provincial government holds an area in reserve for possible future use of B.C. Hydro at the extreme north end of the Elk Valley coal field."

"IntroductionThe purpose of this chapter is to describe current practices in operation and maintenance of flotation circuits in Canadian mineral processing plants. The chapter consists of five sections covering description of equipment, typical flow diagrams, operating practice, instrumentation and maintenance. The approach to this subject matter is intended to be practical in nature, hence no deeply technical treatment of flotation theory will be included.Flotation is an extremely common method of beneficiation of ores. Reasons are the relatively low cost of flotation compared to many other processes, the wide range of minerals to which flotation may be applied and the high efficiency of separation which can usually be achieved. The flotation process as we know it today has been developed within this century and it has had a major impact on the mining industry. While flotation is commonly considered to be important because it provides a relatively simple method of separating minerals in complex ores, the availability of flotation has also made a multitude of mineral deposits in Canada into economically viable mining operations because it allowed production of a concentrate of valuable minerals from the ore. These concentrates could then be transported from geographically remote locations to centraHzed plants for further processing, although the existence of the remote and perhaps small ore body alone would not have justified installation of metallurgical processing plants on site and the grade of ore would not have justified direct shipment of ore.Some of the more common minerals concentrated by flotation are sulphides of copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, zinc, molybdenum, lead and arsenic, as well as non-sulphides such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, phosphates, silicates, chromite, fluorite, limestone and coal. Precious metals are also recovered by flotation, generally in association with another sulphide mineral."

"In response to needs created by intensive exploration and accelerating expansion of coal mining in the Western provinces, Canadian R & D on coal is progressively widening its scope. Principal interests continue to lie in coal geology, preparation and processing, carbonization, combustion and transportation, but much active work is also in progress with respect to mine environments, mined-land reclamation, and environmental consequences of coal mining, processing and use. Long-range 'basic' research, which characterized much of the R & D pattern in the fifties and early sixties and which was often no more than an attempt to prevent total extinction of a dying industry, has been somewhat de-emphasized, except insofar as it relates to 'safe' coal storage and to coal-based carbons (which are beginning to command attention as pollution control media).In this review, recent exploration, mine development and new preparation facilities are noted, and current R & D in transportation, processing, handling, carbonization and combustion is summarized. Reference is also made to investigations bearing on non-fuel uses of coal (notably as source-materials for carbons and agrobiological products)."

"Of the 135 current or past-producing 'gold-only' mines in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield which have produced more than 100,000 tons of ore, the 33 mines which have produced one million ounces or more of gold have accounted for over 84o/o of the total production of 137 million ounces. The published literature on these 33 deposits was reviewed in order to determine the geological setting of the mineralization on a regional (mining camp) and local (mine) scale. The dominant rock types underlying the mining camps are mafic, variolitic, tholeiitic volcanic rocks with a significant ultramafic (komatiitic) component, and clastic and/ or exhalative sedimentary rocks. Felsic volcanic rocks are generally subordinate. Most mining camps are located at or near the top of the mafic-ultramafic sequence, and generally there is a major sedimentary-volcanic contact present which may be 1) a stratigraphic superposition of volcanic and sedimentary units, 2) a rapid, along-strike gradation from dominantly volcanic to dominantly sedimentary units due to facies change, or to the formation of structurally controlled sedimentary basins during volcanism, or 3) frequently (at 40o/o of the camps) a juxtaposition of sedimentary and volcanic sequences across a major fault zone or 'break', which in many instances may represent a reactivated, syn-volcanic basin-margin fault.In contrast to the regional setting, on a local or mine scale over 90o/o of the 33 mines contain felsic intrusions and/ or extrusions within mine workings. The felsic rocks may be quartzbearing (commonly quartz-feldspar porphyries) or dominantly quartz-free (commonly feldspar porphyry syenites or monzonites), and appear to have been emplaced in two different depth-zone environments: an epizonal intrusive environment, and a volcanic vent environment. Although the distinction between epizonal intrusive and volcanic intrusive-extrusive rocks is uncertain in many deposits, the two are tentatively separated on the basis of the grain size of the rock matrix (medium to coarse grained vs aphanitic to fine grained), homogeneity (multi-phased and/ or compositionally zoned vs compositionally homogeneous), and the shape and relationship to stratigraphy of the igneous body (circular or oval in cross section, and cutting the stratigraphy at a low angle vs lenticular and either stratiform or cutting the stratigraphy at a high angle). In addition, felsic intrusions of the volcanic environment commonly grade into tuffs or breccias of extrusive origin, whereas epizonal intrusions do not.Stratiform ore zones of possible exhalative sedimentary origin appear to be confined to deposits in which volcanic felsic rocks are present, and are absent from deposits in which only epizonal felsic intrusions are present. Pervasive carbonate- rich alteration, commonly in roughly stratabound zones of regional extent, and carbonate-rich chemical sedimentary rocks are present in over three-quarters of the deposits containing quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but are much less common in deposits with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. The host sequences of epizonal felsic intrusions which are quartzfree are more commonly sedimentary than those of quartz-bearing epizonal felsic intrusions.Quartz, carbonate minerals, arsenopyrite, scheelite, tourmaline and Cr-muscovite ('juchsite') are the most common mineralogical associates of gold. Arsenopyrite is essentially restricted to the volcanic environment, occurring in about twothirds of the deposits with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks and less than half of the deposits with quartz-free volcanic rocks. Tourmaline, on the other hand, is almost ubiquitous in deposits associated with epizonal intrusions and also occurs in about two-thirds of the deposits associated with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but in only one of the eight deposits associated with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. "Abstract - The Kori Kollo gold deposit is hosted by a c.15 Ma sericitized dacite stock in the La Joya district on the Bolivian Altiplano. The mineralization is of the Bolivian polymetallic vein (BPV) type, with a significant amount of the gold reserves contained in the oxide cap. Field and microscopic studies, K-Ar dating, ??34S values of pyrite, alunite and jarosite, and ??18O values of alunite and jarosite demonstrate that some of this gold is supergene. Two types of supergene gold are present: minute gold grains, 1 to 10 microns across, of high fineness and associated with jarosite and iron oxy-hydroxides; and ‘invisible’ gold, which is probably sorbed onto minerals such as jarosite and iron oxy-hydroxides.Pyrite ??34S values fall in the limited range -3.5 ± 0.6‰, consistent with a magmatic origin. Sulfate ??34S values are homogeneous and overlap closely with those of pyrite (-1.2 ± 2.1‰), which supports petrographic evidence that sulfates replaced pyrite. By contrast, sulfate ??18O values are inhomogeneous with a large range (alunite +2 to 26‰, jarosite -5 to +18‰). These data are interpreted as reflecting kinetically controlled reactions involving various proportions of atmospheric oxygen and local meteoric water. This is typical of supergene alteration and is due to the seasonally dry climate of the Altiplano.The oxide-zone mineralogy is dominated by sulfates and iron oxy-hydroxide minerals with some phosphates and halides, which indicates that the groundwaters were acidic, oxidizing and relatively saline. Under these conditions the most likely complexes responsible for gold mobilization are halides.Geological data and K-Ar ages indicate that oxidation of the BPV deposits began at least around 11 Ma and possibly up to 15 Ma ago, and that supergene alteration lasted until around 4 Ma. During this period, erosion was minimal. Although supergene processes have been active on the Bolivian Altiplano since the Middle Miocene, in contrast to Northern Chile, enrichment of gold has not occurred."

Introduction The writer was instructed to visit the Chibougamau region during the field season of 1927 and report on the mineral discoveries that had been made there since 1911. lt was deemed advisable to obtain detailed information regarding the rocks underlying the area in the vicinity of these recent discoveries. Accordingly an area 60 square miles in extent was mapped. The outcrops were studied along the water courses and along bush traverses spaced at half-mile intervals between these water courses. The completion of the rest of the summer's programme allowed only three weeks for this work. lt is from this small, mapped area, and this necessarily cursory survey, that the material for this paper was obtained. Location And Means Of Access The name Chibougamau district is applied loosely to an ill-defined area of about 1,000 square miles lying mostly north and west of Chibougamau lake in the Province of Quebec. The lake is approximately half way between lake St. John and James bay. It lies 150 miles north of the Canadian National railway and 40 miles south of Mistassini?lake.

This paper, dealing with network planning in an industrial complex, discusses the type and size of project that can be handled on a manual basis. After a review of the fundamentals of network planning, and specifically of the Critical Path Method, the author analyses several different types of projects, each with its own characteristics. Some can be handled in conjunction with a computer, but others can be dealt with equally well without one. Among the projects discussed are a blast furnace reline, the installation of a billet mill flying shear, and routine maintenance-type operations.

Information technology (IT) initiatives in the past have tended to be sold on their ability to maximize resource output and return on capital by using assets more effectively and efficiently. Many IT projects fail, not delivering return on their investment. This is known in the IT industry as the ?productivity paradox,? where increasing investments in IT do not result in comparable increases in productivity. Experiences and studies of most business sectors reveal that this paradox is rooted in the false assumption that more IT spending automatically results in financial benefit, whereas the true source of benefits is in how effectively IT is used. Most business sectors have accepted that the reengineering of processes is required to gain the full benefits promised of IT. A mining operation has organizational processes similar to most business sectors but unique operational processes. The lessons of changing business practice in more common business processes such as inventory control and customer-supplier relationships can be adequately transposed into a mine. The unique operational processes in mines, in turn require unique redesign efforts. Several enabling information technology opportunities have recently become available, such as more integrated mine production management systems and tactical manger training simulators. This paper reviews the latest IT products and ou lines the processes and kinds of change that will be required in order to benefit from these new investment options.

AT the present time we hear a great deal about organization of labour, collective bargaining, workmen's councils, and company unions; about C.1.0. with its principle of vertical unions and A.F.L., largely based on craft unions; and about provincial and federal laws for protection of labour's right to collective bargaining. What we perhaps hear too little about is corresponding organization of the employers, although it recently is mentioned more frequently. I will only mention W. H. Davis, Chairman of the United States War Labour Board, who has had and is having plenty of experience in this field and has also studied labour conditions in Europe-in Sweden for instance. He has repeatedly expressed the opinion that where employer-employee problems are involved, a thing badly needed in America is organization of employers as well as employees to get some order in the present chaos. With this I agree. I believe a strong organization on one side necessitates a correspondingly strong organization on the other side; that has at least been the experience in the industrialized countries in Europe. I happen to be fairly familiar with conditions in Norway, where they have struggled with these problems for fifty years, and a talk on the history, development, and present state of employer-employee relations in that country might perhaps be of interest as giving a general picture of the development of such relations in the northwestern European countries as a whole. The talk was originally given to the Fourth Year students in Mining and Metallurgy at the University of Toronto. I have changed it somewhat to fit a different audience, but I hope you will make allowances if you now and then are reminded of the school auditorium. I will try to be as objective and factual as possible, but it is probably unavoidable that some of what is said is coloured by personal opinion.

RICE LAKE-BERESFORD LAKE area, situated 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1), is Manitoba's foremost gold mining district, although it is exceeded in gold production in the Province by the Flin Flon base-metal mining district. At present, the area is producing at the rate of about one and three-quarter million dollars annually, almost entirely from the San Antonio and Gunnar mines. The total production to date is about $14,000,000. Of this total, over $7,000,000 has come from the San Antonio mine, over $2,000,000 from the Gunnar mine, about $4,000,000 from the Central Manitoba mine, and the balance from several smaller properties. The writer has led Geological Survey parties in the area for the past four summers. The present paper gives a summary of the results of this work and also includes the findings of C. S. Lord, who was in charge of a party for one year. Much valuable information was obtained from earlier published reports on the area and from officials of mining companies, to whom the writer is indebted for their kindly co-operation. It is impossible in this short paper to give proper credit to the earlier workers or to discuss certain points o disagreement between their conclusions and those presented here. The goal of this paper is to present the carbon footprint of Chilean cathodic copper, as a function of the electricity generation mix, ore grade, and process efficiency. Ore grades and acid leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning (LX-SX-EW) yields in the range 0.5-1.0% and 60-80%, respectively, were considered here. Additionally, electricity supply from two Chilean suppliers, SING (1.0 ton CO2/MWh) and SIC (0.4 ton CO2/MWh) was assessed. Simulation results show that oxide plants located in northern Chile, served by the SING network, feature carbon footprint within 4.3 - 11.4 MWh I ton cathodic copper, as compared with 3.5 - 9.3 MWh I ton copper in plants served by SIC. The footprint was found to increase as ore wade and process yields decrease.

THE Wellington Lake power plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, about 25 miles from Goldfields, Saskatchewan, is the second hydro-electric project operating in that Province, the first being the Island Falls plant of the Churchill River Power Company which serves the operations of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The Churchill River project develops 90,000 h.p. at 56-ft. head; the Wellington Lake plant 3,300 h.p. at 75-ft. with pro-vision for an additional 3,300 h.p. unit. Churchill River power is trans-mitted at 110,000 volts over a 58-mile line of steel towers to Flin Flon and an additional 45 miles over a wooden pole-line to Sherritt-Gordon. Our steel tower-line is 22 miles long, and the voltage is 60,000; this choice be-cause certain such equipment was available from Trail. The diversion of 15,000? second-feet at 56-ft. head for 90,000 h. p. at Churchill river dwarfs our 500 second-feet flow at 75-ft. head for 3,300 h.p. In both cases, the main obstacles to be overcome during plant construction were the lack of transport facilities and the short open season. Let it be noted here that this paper deals mainly with those phases of plant construction which were particularly interesting to the writer. With-out these variations from the ordinary routine, this is just another power project whose story is better told by the accompanying charts and pictures. To many members of the Institute it is still just that; but I am writing for those who, like myself, have been too seldom responsible for major under-rakings at an appreciable distance from a railway siding. When it was planned in early 1937 to erect a 1,000-ton mill at our Box mine, both hydro and Diesel power were discussed. With ten years' ore in sight, even an expensive hydro project, such as ours turned out to be, produces kilowatts materially below the 2-cent operating cost of a Diesel plant using fuel-oil at 14 cents a gallon.

"Block and panel cave mining methods are being increasingly proposed as they allow massive, deeply situated ore-bodies to be mined economically at a time when discovery rates of significant near surface deposits are declining. Cave-to-Mill, a mine-to-mill approach for block cave mines, defines ore block models with respect to both mine and mill performance. A cave-to-mill study for the New Afton block caving operation focused on identifying value opportunities related to fragmentation and sorting for a future lift as development progresses deeper. The lack of selectivity and potential for dilution associated with the block cave mining method results in many caving operations having to mine and either dispose of or process material that is below cut-off grade at certain stages of production. As an outcome of the study, the variation in cave fragmentation size and the sensitivity of mill throughput to feed size was examined. To evaluate the amenability of bulk and particle sorting, Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis and X-Ray Fluorescence sensors were tested. A conceptual bulk and particle sorting flowsheet is presented. Grade data from regular underground sampling was used to predict the performance of a bulk sorter. A heterogeneity analysis of material reporting to drawpoints helped to identify areas of the extraction level that experience high variations in grade and thereby stand to benefit from dedicated ore and waste material handling systems should underground bulk sorting be implemented.INTRODUCTION Block and panel caving are low-cost underground mass mining methods that are suitable for excavating weak, massive and steeply-dipping orebodies. Accordingly, cave mining methods have predominantly been used to mine copper porphyry and diamond bearing deposits. Due to the increasing depletion of near-surface orebodies, it is expected that block and panel caving methods will be increasingly used in the copper-gold industry. Their implementation holds significant potential to extend the life of existing open-pit operations by providing an economic means to access ore located at depths that are beyond the practical limits of open-pit mining. Examples of cave mines proposed for British Columbia include the Kwanika Mine, Red Chris underground, Kemess Underground project, and the Iron Cap and Mitchell cave mines of the Kerr-Sulphurets and Mitchell (KSM) project (Moose Mountain Technical Services, 2017; Imperial Metals, 2017; Golder Associates, 2017; Tetra Tech, 2016)."

The slag in iron ore pellets allows wet sintering during firing and leads to suitable bounding. The process of slag formation differs whether it takes place in the core or in the external zone of a pellet. In the core, hematite can be reduced to secondary hematite, depending on the temperature and on the carbon monoxide/dioxide partial pressure ratio. The reaction rim that appears at the outskirts of a silica particle in contact with the FeO bearing magnetite is considered as the slag precursor in the core of the pellet. By contrast, in the external zone of a pellet, where O2 is available and CO partial pressure is very low, the first step towards slag formation is flux decomposition, mainly dolomite and limestone. The CaO liberated through this reaction will be available to react with hematite by solid diffusion to form calcioferrites, which play an active part in the slag evolution process. These two slag formation paths will be explained.
