When a thin film of volatile matter is deposited under vacuum on a polished coal surface, and the coated surface is examined microscopically in plane-polarized reflected light, colour changes are observed which are characteristic of the various macerals present. The colour changes appear to be mainly due to interference between light reflected at the upper surface of the film and at the film!coal interface. A variety of source materials for the volatile matter required have been tested, including powdered bituminous coal, coal tars, boron oxide, and certain resins. Bituminous coal gave the best results.

Host-rock û wallrock major and trace element geochemistry associated with epithermal gold mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand is poorly documented, even though rock geochemistry is a recognised tool in exploration. Such responses assist in recognition of the regional scale imprint of fossil hydrothermal activity, and indicate targets for detailed evaluation within these alteration zones.   Recent investigation of gold deposits in the Waihi (Gladstone), Golden Cross (Empire), Thames (Waiotahi) and Coromandel (Tokatea) areas indicate enrichments of Au, As and Sb in the andesitic wallrocks hosting mineralisation. Of the other elements examined, Si, K and Rb are enriched, and Na, Ca, and Sr are depleted at all deposits. These trends are best developed in the vicinity of veining. In deposits with clay alteration dominating (Waiotahi and Tokatea) there is also depletion of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. Ba and Cr are variably enriched or depleted within different styles of alteration. Base-metal enrichment in the wallrocks is not a feature of Hauraki deposits.

As high grade ore deposits are depleted, remaining deposits are generally lower grade and require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. These low grade deposits often contain a large proportion of barren gangue. Pre-concentration aims to remove this barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible. This has the potential to reduce processing costs, energy and water consumption, increase production and improve resource utilisation.There are several technologies that may be applicable for pre-concentration. This paper looks specifically at bulk ore sorting and how it can be integrated into existing or new mining operations to improve profitability and reduce environmental impact. Bulk ore sorting is the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor measurement. It may be used to increase the production rate through fixed plant capacity, or increase production and/or reduce the size of downstream processing equipment in Greenfield operations. Marginal ore sub-economic reserves may be upgraded, making them economic to treat and improving the resource utilization. Bulk ore sorting could also be used to reduce dilution and ore loss in mining operations by improving grade control, or to separate ore types to treat via different process routes. Various applications of bulk ore sorting are discussed in this paper, and three cases are investigated considering the impact on the overall operation and the associated benefits.CITATION:Duffy, K, Valery, W, Jankovic, A and Holtham, P, 2015. A genesis based on new developments in the physical chemistry and flow properties of colloidal substances is proposed for the pipe-like Peko orebody. The rheological behaviour of sediments is governed by the contained colloids. Remobilization of thick pasty sediment during diagenesis is regarded as an essential step in the concentration of metal dispersed in sediments. At a high concentration the sediment pore fluid is a dense gelloid such that van der Waals attractive forces between the colloidal particles exceeds the coulombic repulsion. This permits accretion of the colloids into globular clots and their fracture fragments. These have a uniform size distribution dependent upon the rate of shear, and the sediment lithifies to clotted, porphyry-like, "gritty", dolomitic or igneous-looking intrusions and flows. The physical chemical properties of natural sediment colloids appear adequate to account for ore formation.Adsorption accounts for the dispersion and retention of metal in sediments. Accretion accounts for the segregation of the colloidal materials to give the various types of clotted igneous-looking intrusive source rocks. Syneresis enables the colloids to spontaneously draw together and to dehydrate. Formation of an ordered lattice achieves a lower energy state and desorbs metals and insoluble metal compounds "particle by particle" into the escaping water of hydration and pore water. Peptization enables migration of the metal hydrosols as stable dispersions until they merge for outflow through seepage zones or water extrusion channels. Nucleation and concretion precipitate the metal dispersoids from pore waters seeping through hydrous parts of the source rock, porous beds, faults, and zones of weakness by which the connate waters leave the lithifying sediments. Gelatinous precipitated mineral matter in the ore channels is capable of thixotropic reliquefaction when disturbed by shock or movement. Local reintrusion, flowage, interveinings,brecciation, and intermixing of the materials is the result.The principles of the suggested genesis are applicable to both syngenetic and epigenetic mineral accumulations.

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. The reduction was carried out at 800-900° C., a rapid flow of hydrogen being maintained in order to remove the water vapour' formed as a result of the reactions:

Owing to the number of chemical processes now in use for the separation of metals from their ores, and the consequent employment of chemicals at the mine, it is sometimes necessary to be able to produce them on the spot. This particularlyapplies to sulphuric acid which may be required for the manufacture of chlorine and of sulphate of copper, or for the treatment of'sulphides and other purposes. It can be made from brimstone for rather less than £3 per ton, but when delivered to any distance from the works, the cost of packages and other charges would amount to more than the value of the acid.I hope therefore, that to any of the members of the Institute who may find it necessary to make sulphuric acid for their own requirements an outline of the process, and some details of the plant etc may be useful, and perhaps lead to their devising improvements, mechanical or otherwise. Though acid can be made from pyrites in Europe for about 15/- per ton, it is probable that for most metaIIurgical purposes the quantity required. and the uncertainty as to how long it would be needed, would make it advisable to spend as little as possible on plant, and so use brimstone, though more expensive, I have therefore given no details of pyrites burning, which is very fully treated by Prof, Lunge in his work on " Sulphuric Acid and Alkali."

Traditionally comminution optimisation has been focused on energy minimisation, whereas flotation optimisation has been focused on recovery improvement. One of the largest, if not the largest, operating cost over the life of a flotation circuit is electrical energy. With increasing pressure on operators to lower production costs and the cost of energy increasing, reducing the energy consumption of the flotation circuit can be beneficial to site economics. This paper reviews the use of energy by mechanically agitated flotation machines and discusses the measurement and benchmarking of energy consumption in modern flotation concentrators. This paper endeavours to lay as concisely as possible, before the members the salient features of local gold milling practice, and to point out in what respects this practice differs from that of other large mining camps. This is essentially a free milling ore the gangue being quartz and the gold occurring in a coarse form. At times the ore crushed contains a good deal of slate, the latter imparting to the tailings a somewhat leaden hue.Small amounts of sulphides, chiefly iron pyrites, and at times smaller quantities of arsenical pyrites, zinc blende, and galena are contained in the stone. The average amount of sulphides contained in the ore cannot well be ascertained, as the concentrate obtained in all cases contain too much silica to form a basis of calculation...

Development of SAG liners has always been a strong focus and interest in mineral processing as SAG liners significantly impact on plant performance (throughput and grind size), material costs and plant downtime. SAG shell relines typically determine the frequency and duration of plant shutdowns. Early SAG shell liner designs relied heavily on practical experiences and were limited in their size due to weight restrictions. Significant developments in Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling, material and manufacturing technologies and larger reline machines have resulted in new and improved liner designs. This paper discusses the evolution of SAG shell liner design and its progression to the Skip Row design. Case studies have been provided for the Skip Row design in a variety of applications such as Single Stage SAG (SSS), SAG and Ball (SAB), SAG and Ball with Crushing (SABC) and Pre-Crush at a variety of mill diameters ranging from 24 foot to 34 foot. A detailed assessment has also been carried out comparing liner service life, ease of reline and performance (throughput, power and grind size) for a large 34 foot SAG mill when compared to the previous design.CITATION:Toor, P, Swart, M and Ståhlbröst, H, 2017. Three large deposits of good quality lignite were located and delineated in the Central Otago region between October 1978 and July 1979. The program was initiated and funded by Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy as part of the national Coal Resource Survey. The exploration work was carried out by Lime and Marble Limited on a contract basis (Bowman, 1980). The three deposits were all potentially mineable by open cast methods and possessed combined indicated and, inferred reserves in the order of 1000 x 106 tonnes. They ranked with the previously discovered Eastern Southland 1ignites and as such constituted an important national energy resource. Fifteen months later a second more detailed investigation of similar duration was undertaken by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB). The objective was to upgrade and refine the geological data base of all of the nine South Island 1ignite deposits in order to make preliminary economic assessments of their potential. Again Lime and Marble Limited acted as the exploration operator (Bowman, 1981a, 1981b, 1981c).

Ground conditions at the Kencana mine, Indonesia, are generally poor and an underhand cut and fill mining method is used for extraction. Due to these poor ground conditions, all vertical development has been conducted using blind, top-down, sink and line excavation methods. Due to time constraints, raiseboring was considered the only viable excavation method for the installation of a return ventilation system for the K2 (Kencana extension) project. In order to achieve successful raiseboring in the poor ground conditions a number of strategies were used including: a detailed geotechnical study for optimal position of the shaft/s, splitting shaft excavation vertically, raiseboring of multiple smaller diameter shafts, extensive pregrouting, installation of drainage holes, and rapid installation of support following excavation.

Since its enactment in 1991, the Resource Management Act (RMA) has generated both praise and criticism. The major criticism is in relation to the costs the Act poses to industry and the time it takes to work through the process. In response to such criticisms the Minister for the Environment has initiated a review of the implementation of the RMA. The Minister's proposals for reform have not yet been released and the discussion that follows is based upon the report by the Minister's Review Group which was released in September.

Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits, which form in quasi-hydrostatic convective hydrothermal systems, frequently contain chalcedony within high-grade ore, which has been interpreted to be a crystallisation product of amorphous silica. To deposit amorphous silica rather than another silica polymorph at elevated temperatures requires very high silica concentrations, because of its relatively high solubility. Only extreme boiling caused by decompression followed by wall rock heating upon structural dilation, can achieve this. As gold deposits with amorphous silica it must be produced by the same mechanism, particularly since extreme boiling is also a very effective mechanism for gold deposition. Recent developments support this view; the first is the detailed isotopic analysis of chalcedony-bearing high-grade veins reported from Hishikari, Japan, in which oxygen isotope results are indicative of extreme boiling and hydrogen isotopes indicate initial deposition of amorphous silica. The second is the finding of chalcedony within geothermal pipe work in the Rotokawa geothermal field in New Zealand. Rotokawa is a comparatively hot field (335¦C at depth); hence separation of the steam-water mixture produced by the wells is undertaken at a comparatively high temperature (220¦C) to minimise down-stream silica scaling. Even so, silica scale, some of which is chalcedony, does occur, under similar conditions to that in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. Evidence of chalcedony forming under these conditions, reinforces the interpretation that decompressive boiling is the main deposition mechanism for gold in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. It is possible that there is sufficient drop in temperature due to decompression that, at least initially, the silica deposits directly as chalcedony. Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits that do not contain chalcedony, such as those in the Philippines, may form at temperatures too high for chalcedony to directly form. The recognition of decompressive boiling as the main deposition mechanism in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits means that exploration can focus on zones where this has taken place by combining paleohydrological reconstruction and structural geology.

The observation of lower-than-predicted Fe/Cu ratios in the cementation of copper on iron in tests at elevated temperatures indicated that some other reaction was contributing to the reduction of cupric sulphate in addition to the reduction by elemental iron. Experiments showed that the copper sponge, which initially formed on the iron, subsequently reduced the cupric sulphate giving the products cuprous oxide and sulphuric acid.Tests were undertaken to determine the rate and equilibrium conditions of the reduction reaction with variations in the types of the reducing agent and solution parameters. The reaction first became apparent at temperatures above 50°C and as it ceased at pH 1·8 it was possible to induce further reaction by alkali addition.
