The Gippsland Basin, southeastern Australia, has an Upper Cainozoic history of episodic change of hydrology and the related environment, reflected in the geomorphology and surficial deposits of the onshore basin and the hydrodynamically controlled accumulations of petroleum of the offshore basin. Succeeding this episodic pattern, man through a number of activities, has had a sudden and major impact on the hydrology and the related environment. Activities include those directly affecting the groundwater system, such as extraction of fossil fuels with the consequent threat of land subsidence; irrigation and clearing of vegetation and the consequent effect of salinisation; change of land use and installation of septic tanks with resulting nitrate pollution; damming of streams and the consequent reduction in the frequency of floods with degradation of the biological Environment; de-snagging streams and construction of cutoffs with increased stream erosion, modifying wetlands including drainage, with the consequent degradation of their ecosystems; and increase in phosphate and nitrate inputs to the coastal lakes with the risk of their eutrophication.

The location of seismic events in mines is traditionally calculated based on the arrival times of P- and S-waves for a given velocity model (homogeneous or heterogeneous). This technique is successful when the sources of seismic events are sudden and localised (eg episodes of fracturing in solid rock or dynamic slip along a plane of weakness) and thus the radiated seismic waves have clear arrivals. In massive mining operations such as block caves, strong seismic signals often originate from the movement of loose rocks on the perimeter of the fracture zone. These signals are easily recordable but do not contain easily identifiable direct P- and S-waves, making the estimation of location through traditional methods more complicated. This problem has been approached by using a ‘brightness’ location method that estimates the origin of seismic waves based on travel times of envelopes of seismic energy. This tool is extended to be applicable in a heterogeneous velocity environment that now accounts for the presence of a cave or other strong velocity perturbations. Bruce Supergroup, the Bresnahan Group, and theBangemall Group. The stratigraphy and distribution of each is described, their relative ages discussed, and a brief geological history of the whole area is presented.

The head loss caused by metallurgical sampling for slurry streams can be reduced by metallurgical sampler design. When the process volumetric flow rate is reduced by vertical static cutters before the sampling by an equal number of moving cutters to the static cutters, the installation requires less installation head space than other sampling arrangements and is easy to accommodate at suitable locations in the process. Low head loss reduces building costs for the processing plant and operational costs during the lifetime of the plant.The presence of a possible systematic bias in the particle size distribution, solids density and elemental composition between an Outotec MSA 2/50 metallurgical slurry sampler sample and MSA 2/50 manually sampled reject have been studied by a customer. The paired samples were taken as simultaneously as possible. The customer evaluated the possible bias using a paired t-test and provided the assay results to Outotec for further evaluation.The results of the paired t-test showed no systematic bias in particle size distribution, solid density or assayed analytes, except in one analyte with low content and a high relative error. The high relative error in one analyte may have been caused by the same calibration model used in a X-ray fluorescence analyser for both high elemental-content concentrate and very low elemental-content tailings samples. The sampled stream is the tailings of a previous process stage.The results of the t-test were studied further using analysis of variance to reveal the error sources in samples. The results showed no bias between the samples collected from the MSA 2/50 reject and composite samples collected of the MSA 2/50 sample stream. Many open pit mines require dewatering or need aquifer depressurisation systems to manage mine water inflow and/or mine floor stability. In many instances these mining operations impact on regional groundwater resources and therefore access to these resources by other users.As such potential exists for mine development to be hindered or even blocked by groundwater legislation that aims to prevent declining groundwater levels and demonstrate equitable use of a regional groundwater resource.There is a need to manage aquifer systems during and after the mining operations, and in some cases stresses on the aquifers and associated ecosystems may be elastic and can be managed with minimum impacts or reversed once the mine ceases to operate.This paper uses the Gippsland sedimentary basin, with a history of declining groundwater levels and mining and petroleum production, as a case study to pose the question: Should period of mining operation, aquiferÆs storage capacity and its ability to recharge be concurrently considered when granting groundwater abstraction and mining licenses for prospective mine development?It further examines that by utilising an aquiferÆs storage capacity and demonstrating an understanding of aquifer system hydrodynamics during and beyond the life of the mine (time), the approval process for groundwater abstraction and associated cost of statutory monitoring may be made less onerous.

An investigation on the breakage characteristics of closely sized orc samples at different levels of input energy was carried out to determine an appearance function for possible use in ball mill modelling. A consistent pattern of breakage behaviour was observed and the resultant size distributions could be described by a one-parameter, ('t'), family of curves. For each particle size range tested, this parameter 't' has an exponential relationship with input energy below an upper energy limit. A tentative linear relationship between the input energy at a constant value of 't' and the work-index leads to reconstruction of 'I' - input-energy curves from the work-index values. To normalise the efrect of particle size and input energy, multidimensional cubic spline regression was performed on thc entire range of data. The results indicated that the parameter 't' can be determined, reasonably accurately, as a function of Ln (input energy, kWh/tonne) and Ln (particle size, mm) for input energies between 0.5 and 8.0 kWh/tonne.

Apatite Fission Track Analysis (AFTA) is a thermal history reconstruction tool that enables determination of magnitude and timing of maximum paleotemperature and paleo-geothermal gradient at the time of maximum paleotemperatures. From this information, the amount of section missing at major unconfornities can be estimated and incorporated into basin models. The Gippsland Basin has a number of distinct problems that can be tackled using AFTA. 1. The nature of the regional break between the Late Cretaceous-Tertiary Latrobe Group and the underlying Early Cretaceous Strzelecki Group. 2. The tectonic history of the basement flanking the basin and its effect on sediment composition. 3. The age of igneous activity in the basin, as typified by the widespread basaltic plugs and dykes intruding the outcropping Strzelecki Group. Major uplift and erosion within, and adjacent to, the early Cretaceous rift basin in the Mid-Cretaceous, at -95 to 100 Ma, initially constrained the Latrobe Group depositional area to the central deep of the Gippsland Basin and provided an elevated source of quartz-rich detritus for the Latrobe Group reservoirs. This is in marked contrast to the preceding period in the early Cretaceous when contemporaneous volcanism dominated as a source of detritus, producing quartz-poor lithic sandstones, in which a host of attendant diagenetic reactions destroyed their reservoir potential. Initial uplift and erosion of the volcanogenic Strzelecki Group also occurred in the mid-Cretaceous as revealed by a number of distinct inversion structures, and erosion of this material will have locally provided very poor quality sand to the basal Latrobe Group.

The underground Neves Corvo copper-tin mine in southern Portugal currently disposes of its tailings in a ætraditionalÆ wet tailings impoundment. With the development of new technologies for preparation and transport of thickened tailings or paste, alternative tailings disposal options have become available that provide a more sustainable water management system and a higher degree of environmental protection. In addition, growing European resistance towards subaqueous disposal may well result in mandatory use of dry disposal methods in the near future. Twenty-four tailings disposal alternatives were evaluated through a cost-effective and easily-implementable bench-scale geochemical screening program conducted at site. Since the tailings are pyrite-rich and highly acid generating, particular emphasis was placed on monitoring likely indicators of sulfide oxidation under the various simulated disposal scenarios. Dependent parameters investigated as part of the program included moisture content, use of alkaline additives (lime, cement), use of a bactericide, and agitation. Response parameters included paste pH, specific conductance, and temperature as indicators of oxidation. The testing was carried out for 30 weeks. Results indicate that a number of relationships between the geochemical stability of the samples (ie sulfide oxidation) and sample characteristics can be readily identified. Based on the results of the screening program, a limited number of tailings mixtures have been selected for further long-term testing in field weathering cells to aid in the identification of the optimal mix design for future tailings disposal at the Neves Corvo Mine. This type of testing provides an inexpensive and reliable methodology for semi-quantitative comparison between tailings disposal alternatives, in particular at locations where more rigorous evaluation through long-term, fully replicated testing is not immediately feasible.

The Greymouth Coal Project is a proposal to mine by the application of proven hydraulic, and room and pillar underground mining methods; and to process the equivalent of an average of 1.7 million tonnes per year over a forty-year period. The proposed mine site is located ten kilometres north of Greymouth, on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Of the three separate mineable seam groups, the thick Main Seam Group, which makes up 77% of the total resource, will be mined by hydraulic mining technology.   It is proposed to market and produce a high volatile bituminous type coal with low ash (6%) and sulphur (0.4%). Because the inherent ash content is low, the requirement for coal treatment will only be the use of a single cell jig circuit to control the effects of rock dilution and partings. The resulting coal product is tentatively planned to be transported by rail to the port at Lyttelton for loading on to Panamax or Post Panamax size vessels.

X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is a non-destructive technique that allows the exploration of the internal structure of solid objects in 3D. Over the past ten years, the combination of XCT with more conventional 2D techniques and quantitative 3D image processing and analysis (commonly referred to as digital rocks) has allowed us to address some of the most challenging problems in ore deposit studies. The range of X-ray energies used in XCT allows the X-rays to be transmitted through complex and dense materials including iron ores (eg sinters, lumps, granules). Recent high-resolution XCT scanners have the ability to generate multiscale (25 down to 0.3 µm voxel size) imaging of a given sample enabling the characterisation of 3D textures across a range of scales. This paper will focus on the application of digital rocks to iron ore sinter particles (using filtered polychromatic X-ray beam). The paper is divided into three parts and includes: i) details on the methodologies including their benefits and limitations and the effect of spatial resolution; (ii) the quantification of pore network topology and pore characteristics (eg open versus closed pores, pore size distribution and pore morphologies; degree of connectivity of the pore network and its tortuosity); and (iii) the evaluation of the technique to characterise various phases within the material and quantify 3D mineral textures.CITATION:Godel, B, Ellis, B, O’Dea, D, Honeyands, T and Harvey, T, 2017. A detailed examination of carbonic acid leaching of crude iron-containing magnesia derived from Savage River magnesite shows that the rate and extent of magnesium and iron dissolution are affected by the slake time, leaching temperature, carbon dioxide pressure, pulp density and rate of agitation. In order to produce high-purity magnesia from the leachate by precipitation and calcination, the optimum leaching conditions, which are those that yield maximum magnesium and minimum iron dissolution, have to be a compromise in terms of the above parameters. For example, iron dissolution can be limited by leaching at an elevated temperature (-45°C), but because the maximum concentration of magnesium biearbonate decreases rapidly with an increase in temperature, it is necessary to use a low pulp density (-2 per cent solids) in order to achieve an acceptable degree of magnesium dissolution.Evidence is obtained that iron dissolution involves the formation of a soluble ferric bicarbonate complex that decomposes at elevated temperatures. The extent of iron dissolution is much higher than might be expected and it is probably because the original magnesite contains siderite in solid solution with the magnesite; on calcination, the hematite whieh is formed is in a very finely divided condition and hence more reactive.

The poor flotation response of many coals has in the past been attributed to such factors as differences in rank, differences in degree of oxidation, differences in petrographic composition, or slime coatings. The present work shows that while all these factors undoubtedly influence flotation, the size distribution of the feed may override these. Evidence is presented which shows how this factor can lead to substantial losses of coarse coal (>250 µm)from a coal which would normally be considered amenable to flotation. Reasons for this loss of flotation response are suggested together with means of overcoming the problem.

Filtration of pulps of varying densities is an essential operation in the hydro-metallurgical production of zinc. The use of filters naturally applies only to the "wet" plants, and in these varying types and sizes are in commission. At Risdon, the Moore suction filter is used for the heavier pulps, except in one instance, where a modification of the Butters-Cassell filter is installed.Filter presses are in general use, and of these, one is a washing unit; the plates, and frames are of cast iron or mild steel, except in one case which is a centre feed press having wooden frames.FILTER DESIGNThe problem of filtration presented itself very early in the history of Risdon and the first developments occurred in what was termed the 250 -lb. plant. Here experiments were made with many types of filters, and as this was the pilot plant on which the design of the 10 ton plant (10 tons of zinc per day) was based, quick decisions were necessary.An Oliver type filter was chosen for the heavier pulp or residue, and a Shriver wooden frame filter press for the lighter pulps.To this day, but with a number of variations, filter presses continue to function unopposed in their particular field; however, the Oliver filter was soon superseded because it was found impossible to wash the filter cake efficiently without repulping; consequently its use was abandoned and the Moore filter adopted.Both- these filters have been modified and developed in many ways to meet the requirements of a zinc plant, but they retain their original basic features.

The importance of timbering, not only from a financial point of view but from an actual mining point of view, is so often overlooked or slightly glossed over by the average expert and investor, that I have thought it would prove interesting to go into the matter and to invite discussion upon the subject. We will first take small veins, or reefs as they are termed in some mining countries; and by small veins it is intended to denote fissures from a few inches to three feet. The ore body is supposed to be confined within well defined walls free from gangue matter, unless the casing can be defined as such. Now, if the walls are smooth and moderately hard, no timbering is required other than the stulls, which are braced from wall to wall in order to form platforms or stages to stope from. Should the reef from wall to wall prove payable, or should the vein be of a character to prohibit cleaning or sorting; and it be determined to send the whole of the stone to the, reduction works, the stuUs should be left in place until the section or block of ground is worked out, in order that if a weak spot in the walls (especially the hanging) occur, it would be possible, without any particularly extra expense or difficulty often times accompanied by danger to brace and secure the slabs. After the block became entirely stoped, it would pay where labour was cheap to remove the majority of timbers to stull another section.

The Porgera gold deposit is an epithermal gold base-metal deposit located in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold-silver-sphalerite-galena-pyrite mineralisation is related to stocks and dykes of dioritic composition which have intruded a series of folded marine sediments, mainly shales and siltstones, often with calcareous and carbonaceous horizons, of middle Jurassic to middle Eocene age. The most intensely mineralised zone is at Waruwari Hill, where the mineralisation occurs predominantly as massive mixed sulphide veins, and less frequently as quartz-chlorite veins and as disseminations. Mineralisation occurs in all rock types and several phases of mineralisation have been recognised.

This paper summarises the development t,) date for the Hidden Valley Gold (HVG) Project. It starts with the original exploration work, covers the detailed feasibility study activities and concludes with the current phase of extra exploration drilling. A brief technical summary has been made from the various mining, process and environmental studies that were undertaken as part of the project approval process. A discussion of the influential non-technical factors is included, as well as a view of the future prospects for an operating mine. The project was always seen as marginal, given the low grades, small resource and short mine life. However the capital and operating costs were lowered with aggressive design and it was regarded an acceptable development by CRA. The opportunity was taken to review the project when delays in start-up were encountered. An updated financial evaluation showed a subeconomic resource in 1990 terms and this resulted in a new exploration phase to identify a larger deposit.

Microindentation testing using the square–pyramid–shaped Vickers indenter is a well-established technique to determine the microhardness of minerals and materials. However there is a paucity of published microhardness data from Fe ore samples. It is acknowledged that an iron ore’s particle mineralogy and texture is critical to its processing properties, and it is therefore considered that the microhardness of different mineralogical/textural types may also relate to these properties. Mineral microhardness potentially provides inputs to the modelling of breakage characteristics during comminution, as well as the relationship between mineral chemistry and microhardness, and mineral microporosity and microhardness. Microhardness can be determined as single crystal microhardness, for more coarsely microcrystalline samples, or as ‘aggregate microhardness’ for cryptocrystalline or finely microcrystalline samples.Variations in the texture and mineral chemistry of common Fe ore minerals (eg martite and microplaty hematite, ochreous and vitreous goethite etc) are well established and this study provides microhardness data on different textural forms of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides from a variety of different Fe ore deposits. The data indicated that in general, the mineral grain size, microporosity and texture were the main influences on Fe (oxyhydr)oxide microhardness. There were no apparent systematic variations between microhardness and minor element mineral chemistry, with the possible exception of Al content in goethite (for goethites with Al content >0.5 wt per cent), and for goethite total element contents >90 wt per cent (determined by electron probe microanalysis, EPMA). Higher Al concentrations and lower total element concentrations in goethite EPMA analyses correlated with lower goethite microhardness. Microporosity and grain size were more important than texture to hematite microhardness. Different textural forms of dense hematite (eg martite, recrystallised interlocking hematite and specular hematite) with similar grain size exhibited comparable microhardness. Microhardness values for hematite and hydrohematite with little or no evident microporosity were also similar, whereas more porous forms of martite, microplaty hematite or hydrohematite exhibited lower microhardness.CITATION:Peterson, M J, Manuel, J R and Hapugoda, S, 2017. The history of soft and hard rock underground mining is blemished with regional instabilities of mine workings. Whilst the potential consequences of regional instability events are recognised to be high, there is a false perception that the probability of them occurring is very low. In fact, Australia has averaged more than one event per year for the past 20 years. At least five fatalities and over $100 million of losses have been associated with the events. As such, they are a core risk to underground mining and have a significant effect on the quadruple bottom line of business û safety, environment, community acceptance and economics. This paper explores the important roles that risk management has in reducing the probability and consequences of regional instabilities. It concludes that education and continuing professional development are essential elements for effectively managing the risk.

This paper examines the recent trend towards sustainability reporting and the application of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) æSustainability Reporting GuidelinesÆ. It also reviews reporting in the context of the Australian Minerals Industry Code for Environmental Management, as well as the status of public sustainability reporting globally in the minerals industry. The public reporting of environmental, health and safety, social/community and economic performance has evolved over the past two decades. Initially, separate and to some degree disparate documents were produced to report performance in each distinct area. In the early to mid 1980Æs some organisations had begun to report their environmental performance through some minor commentary in their annual financial reports or through ætokenisticÆ leaflets, often used as public relations exercises. Due to more media coverage and an elevated level of public scrutiny, organisations are no longer merely reporting their good performance, but also their bad and indifferent performance. In recent years these once separate environment, health and safety and community public reports have further evolved to become more integrated, reflecting organisations embarking on the reporting of their progress towards sustainable development. The primary factor in driving the evolution of sustainability reporting has been the increasing influence of stakeholders. Two groups of external stakeholders that have had a significant influence over public sustainability reporting in recent years have been non government organisations (NGOs) and socially responsible investment funds. Significant expenditure is involved in the preparation and publication of a sustainability report however many organisations do not appear to have examined in detail what they are really trying to achieve from their public reporting process. It is important to establish objectives for the public reporting process to achieve maximum benefits. Without a framework of public reporting objectives, the benefits of the reporting process to the organisation will not be recognised and the considerable expenditure involved will be increasingly difficult to justify. We believe that by focussing on the process rather than the document, significant benefits to the organisation can be gained. Indeed, with a proper framework of objectives and targets, the reporting process can be used as a vehicle to drive organisational change, implement management systems and improve performance. An idealised framework for a public sustainability reporting process sees the organisationÆs sustainability policies drive the entire process and determine the sustainability objectives. Specific targets are then set to realise those objectives. The targets will govern performance indicators that should be used to measure the success of target achievement and which will also define what data need to be collected. Evaluation is a key component of the reporting process to measure the success of target achievement and progress in realising objectives, as well as review the need for new targets to be set. The actual production of a public document is only one, albeit important, component of the overall reporting process. The challenges that lie ahead for sustainability reporting primarily relate to the integration of environmental, social and economic performance reporting as organisations integrate their approach to these areas. This will only happen as the culture of an organisation changes to not only accept the principles of sustainable development but to implement those principles in daily operations. The reporting process has the potential to drive that cultural change by communicating the organisationÆs sustainability objectives and setting challenging targets for their realisation. Public sustainability reporting will only achieve its maximum value when it forms an integral part of an organisationÆs sustainability management system and culture.
