Automatic control of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills has often been considered complex. Recent experiences at Century Zinc (worldÆs second largest open pit zinc mine) refute this. Together with operating knowledge and appropriate control techniques high quality control is achievable. In this application model-based, constraint, and multiple output control were employed. The control was implemented using standard blocks in the plant DCS. The resulting overall control strategy fulfils the operating objectives and controls the mill with minimal operator involvement over 95 per cent of the time. Previous campaigns using expert systems and complex DCS based control have lacked durability. Their fall into disuse is briefly discussed.

The definition of an ore handling system and its consequent layout design is of crucial importance in cave mining projects. It not only represents the main driver in the production capacity and reliability of the mining system, it is also a fundamental variable in the footprint’s development time and cost.In recent decades, load-haul-dump (LHD) tramming distance optimisation through the allocation of several orepasses inside the footprint has been the most common practice in ore handling system layout definition at Codelco’s operations. Today, the improvement of existing technology, such as higher-capacity LHDs and jaw-gyratory crushers, and intensive preconditioning techniques to improve fragmentation allow the conceptualisation of simple and highly productive ore handling system layouts for wide caving areas that avoid the complexity and high cost of developing numerous orepasses inside the footprint.The initial macroblocks of the Chuquicamata underground mine project (PMCHS) consider an ore handling system layout in which LHDs dump into orepasses located inside the footprint area. The ore is then transferred into crusher chambers located below the production level, where it is crushed by jaw crushers and then conveyed to surface. In an effort to reduce development time and costs, a new ore handling system layout for the PMCHS experimental macroblocks was engineered using improved technologies and techniques in a simpler mining system. The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. For small particles of niekel flotation eoncentrate (av. size 50 pm) the predominant heat transfer mechanism under suspension smelting conditions, prior to ignition, is conduction from the gas and not radiation from nearby hot bodies. Results of laboratory tests using gas temperatures 380-700°C and furnace wall temperatures 380-1100°C were in accord with heat transfer theory. In practieal flash smelters earlier ignition, and hence better utilization of the space in the shaft, would result from introduetion at the top of the shaft of gases hotter than the ignition temperature of 500-600°C.

In setting out to describe the methods and machinery employed at Iron Knob the writer does not attempt to give any information as to the situation, topography or geological features of the locality. This, together with estimates of the quantities of ore still available, has been carried out in a most thorough manner by R. L. Jackr and F. R. Hockey. This essay is intended to deal with working methods as they exist to-day, beginning with drilling, blasting, quarry traction, etc., and touching on such details as the supplyof electricity, water and compressed air.At the present time almost the entire output of ore is won from the hill known as Iron Monarch. The granulites and related "dry" igneous rocks tend to be passed over during exploration for metals. Preliminary data show that high trace concentrations of eu, Ni, and other metals of economic interest are commonin orthopyroxene and some of the other granulite minerals. During retrograde metamorphism of granulites, pyroxenes are converted to amphiboles or phyllosilicates, and significant quantities of metals are released andbecome available for incorporation into new mineral phases, or may be transported elsewhere. S-rich scapolite is the normal scapolite of granulites. Its retrogression to secondary plagioclase provides much S which scavengesCu and Ni, from pyroxenes undergoing retrogression, thus producing ore-fluids. A full analysis of a scapolite with 5·10 per cent SOg is given.Beryl is unstable in granulites but the rare Be mineral taaffeite (Al4Mg(Be, FeII)Os) with 5·50 per cent BeO occurs in central Australia as a pale green tabular mineral easily confused for chloritoid in hand-specimen.Metamorphic differentiation and mobilization of primary ore concentrations are major factors controlling their post-granulite attitude and grade.Zones of retrograde metamorphism are commonly found cutting or engirdling granulite terranes. As the "volatiles" for the new hydrous minerals of many of these zones are of deep-seated origin and may be juvenile, sulphide mineralization in them may also be of mantle origin. However, it is likely that much of the metal content could be scavenged from the granulites as they are down-graded by juvenile volatiles. Major Bouguer gravity anomalies delineate some granulite terranes (e.g. Fraser Block, Western Australia), and are related to deep-seated geosutures and mantle disturbances.Many granulite terranes are linear belts and appear to be welded to older cratonic blocks.

The Karangahake gold-silver deposit is located 11 km west of Waihi in the southern part of the Hauraki Goldfield. Historically it was the second largest bullion producer in the goldfield with a past production (1882 - 1944) of 126.712 tonnes of gold-silver bullion (Au:Ag ratio of 1:3.3) from 1 142 315 tonnes of ore grading 27.4 g/tonne gold equivalents.

Major operating aspects of the Mary Kathleen Uranium Ltd. treatment plant are discussed with partkular reference to those which are peculiar to this operation.Problems associated with the production of a penalty free uranium oxide product are examined and the methods developed to overcome them are described in detail.INTRODUCTIONMary K,athleen Uranium Ltd. is the largest of the Australian uranium producers. The flow-sheet is based on fine grinding, standard sulphuric acid leach, ion exchange concentration, and magnesia precipitation of the final product, with certain modifications introduced as the result of pilot plant investigations at the South Australian Department of Mines Research Laboratories in Adelaide.The plant commenced operations in June, 1958, attained design tonnlige of 1,120 tons per day in September of that year and has since operated continuously with a throughput in excess of 1,000 tons per day. Pilot plant recommendations generally have been followed, and predicted results have been attained. The only exception has been the silica and rare earth content of the product produced during the early months of operation. Considerable modification of the early resin regeneration techniques resulted in the reduction of the silica content of the product to within specification limits. Research work in the ion exchange section has also resulted in the reduction of the rare earth content of the product to below specification levels. All product now being produced is completely within the agreed specification limits of impurities.

In the course of work being carried out in the Lubricants and Bearings Section of the Council lor Scientific and Industrial Research on the production of copper4ead 'bearings for 'use in aircraft, it has been found necessary to develop special metallographic methods. For proper control of the production of steel-backed copper-lead bearings it is necessary to adhere to rigidly controlled conditions, and it is essential that a method of examination be adopted which will readily detect actual defects or any variations in quality. Some defects can be observed with the naked eye, whilst others are detected by radiographic examination. This latter method is invaluable as a rapid, reliable test in the production of aircraft bearings, but it is necessary to observe the structure of the alloys under the microscope, both to be able to interpret the radiograph correctly and to determine what has occurred to the metal during and after solidification. The use of a sound metallographic technique is'particularly important in developmental work and research connected with these bearings.Polishing TechniqueCopper and lead are practically immiscible in the solid state, but whilst they are miscible only in certain limited proportions in the liquid state; consequently "alloys" of copper and lead consist of a mixture of the constituent metals. The metallographic difficulties are obvious. Copper is a relatively tough metal, although it readily scratches, whilst lead is extremely soft and easily deformed. It wouId be expected if any normal polishing technique were applied that the lead would be readily torn out of the surface being prepared, and, in addition, that the lead would tarnish very easily.Grange(2) has described a method by which these difficulties can be overcome. The method involves an etch-polish procedure using "chrome regia" as an etchant for the copper. The chrome regia was a solution of chromium trioxide and hydrochloric acid in water. This type of etchant has been adopted, but it was found necessary to make certain changes.The method now adopted in this laboratory is as follows: The specimen (which is usually mounted in bakelite) is wet ground in a series of successively finer Hydro-Durexsil emery papers down to 60.0· grit paper.The specimen is then etched in the chrome regis, etchant (the composition of this etchant will pe discussed later) for approximately five seconds.Most efficient etching is obtained by swabbing the surface of the specimen...

The Commission maintains a data base first computerised in 1957 and containing information from over 18 000 boreholes located mainly in the Latrobe Valley area. Some of the borehole derived information dates from the turn of the century, although most of it has been collected as a result of Commission investigations conducted over the past 40 years. The Resource Data Base contains not only information gained directly from the drilling itself but includes the results of chemical and physical testing on many hundreds of thousands of samples retrieved from boreholes. Replacement value of the Resource Data Base has been estimated to be around $200 million, and it's integrity and accessibility is clearly of paramount importance, not only to existing mining and power generating functions but to the future evaluation and use of the vast brown coal Resource.

The Channar Iron Ore Mining Project (the Project) is a joint venture involving the Hamersley Holdings group (Hamersley) and the China Metallurgical Import and Export Corporation (CMIEC). The Project represents the first new iron ore mine development in Australia since 1971/72 and is the first major overseas mining investment by the People's Republic of China (PRC). The Channar mine is being constructed in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and will operate for more than 20 years supplying the PRC with 200 M tonne of high grade iron ore. The Project is configured to take advantage of Hamersley's existing production and support facilities. The Joint Venturers will invest A$280 million to achieve an initial production rate of 3 M tonne/yr and an additional A$120 million over the next 8 years to achieve full capacity of 10 M tonne/yr. Financing the Project to meet the requirements of both Hamersley and CMIEC, with the dependance of the Project on Hamersley's infrastructure, and in a depressed iron ore market, required an innovative financial structure to be arranged in a limited period. This paper describes both the financial structure and its implementation, and draws a number of conclusions regarding the financing of resource projects.

Studies to enhance the FLSmidth forced air machine through changes in the design, showed important improvements through changes in the number of Rotor blades, stator designs, rotor air distribution and other designs features. The main outcomes from this study highlighted that increasing the number of rotor blades increased the selectivity while decreasing power requirements while stators with slots have better results in terms of recovery, flotation efficiency and selectivity than without slots.Also the rotor air distribution makes a difference in the design when comparing different distribution criteria whilst keeping all features of shape and number of blades etc constant. At the most efficient rotor air distribution design, copper recovery reached one of the highest values while keeping good selectivity. The possible explanation for that is the increase in the pump capacity indicated by the increase in the specific power.It was seen as significant that reduction in specific power for some designs tested compared with the then current standard design had an average of 30% less power consumption.As a result, FLSmidth was able to identify new designs that decreased power and improved recovery, as well as, identifying some designs that specifically improved fine and/or coarse particle recovery.CITATION:Silva, R, Caldwell, K, Bell, D, Olson, T and Vianna, S, 2013. Isa): I found many ideas to interest me in Haddon King's paper "Notes on Ore Occurrences in Highly Metamorphosed Precambrian Rocks" (Stillwell Anniversary Volume).At Mount Isa I have not been happy about some of the longstanding appreciations of the geological evidence as fresh data accumulated, and as more and more knowledge has been building up outside Mount Isa in recent years of sedimentary deposition of sulphides.Accordingly, I organized a small section of the Geological Department at Mount Isa at the beginning of 1958 under Senior Geologist, W. J. Murray to reappraise our geological record and investigate old interpretations and new ones that arise. The work is expected to take several years to complete, but it is hoped that sufficient will be done before then to permit the most plausible story on the ore genesis to be chosen. In the meantime, W. J. Murray has proposed, in a Company Report, that the.epigenetic features of the silver,lead-zinc deposits, which are essentially conformable with the shales, could have resulted from remobilized syngenetic deposits.Haddon King, on p. 159; has listed six assumptions that are required by a magmatic-hydrothermal theory of, origin for conformable deposits. Tumbling mills and some theoretical and practical aspects of milling are discussed. Attention is directed towards the difficulty of relating the dynamical analyses of the motions of particles within mills to the existing treatments of breakage processes. This synthesis may be advanced by a study of milling that utilizes the matrix analysis of breakage processes. Application of the matrix analysis to results obtained on (i) grinding in open-circuit a zinc ore in a conical pebble mill and in a modified conical mill, (ii) "grinding of cement clinker in a compound mill, and (iii) to some drop-weight grindability tests is discussed. It is shown that the 'IT-breakage model adequately describes the breakage processes of each of the tests. (The proportion broken in each breakage cycle is given by 'IT and is independent of particle size.)The size distributions of the products are accurately predicted in the cases considered. Matrix analyses of the breakage of coals, various ores and a cement clinker have been made. Appendices give an elementary account of the matrix methods and give the equations fully describing reverse order closed circuit operations. It is merely a synopsis of some of the conclusions recently arrived at in regard to the stratigraphic and structural geology, compiled to act as a guide to those members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy attending the Queenstown meeting who are interested in economic geology. Studies of the Main Seam in the Rapahoe Sector of Greymouth Coalfield have shown that the proportions of palynomorphs and palynomorph groups vary vertically within the seam, but remain laterally consistent. Subsequent examinations of other seams in the Rapahoe Sector have demonstrated that the changes in palynomorph proportions observed in the Main Seam are specific to that seam, effectively providing a seam 'fingerprint'. Such a characteristic signature may be used to identify the Main Seam where faulting or seam splitting confuses seam correlation between drillhole intersections. Palynomorph assemblages are derived from the original plants which formed the peat mire, and yield information on mire conditions such as climate, mineral matter input and chemistry. These depositional factors influence coal properties such as mineral content, volatile matter yields and coal breakability. Palynological data can therefore assist in development of depositional lTIodels for prediction of coal quality variations. Several other, thiner seams in the Rapahoe Sector have been demonstrated to also contain recognisable palynomorph assemblages, suggesting that other seams may also possess distinct palynomorph abundance profiles.

Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited (OceanaGold) has commenced mining operations at the Globe-Progress mine in the Reefton Goldfield, an area that historically produced 2.1 million ounces of gold from underground quartz lode deposits. During the construction phase of the operation, advanced exploration programmes targeting near-mine prospects commenced. The focus of this ongoing exploration is the discovery of near surface, refractory gold deposits that are amenable to open-pit mining methods and treatment through the Globe-Progress process plant.   One such discovery is the Supreme deposit, located along strike approximately 3 kilometres to the south of the Globe-Progress mine. The Supreme area was tested extensively with diamond drilling in 2006, defining a deposit with similar mineralisation styles and grade to the Globe-Progress deposit. The mineralisation comprises a central core of gold-bearing quartz veins, locally containing visible gold, surrounded by a more extensive halo of refractory, disseminated gold associated with an arsenopyrite-pyrite sulphide mineral assemblage. Three subparallel mineralised structures host the mineralisation. These structures are highly oblique to the country rock orientations, extending approximately 250 metres along a northeast-southwest strike and at least 220 metres down-dip, with an average thickness of 12 metres and moderate dip to the southeast. Records of historical workings indicate that mineralisation extends further down-dip and remains open at depth. 5175 ounces of gold were mined historically at the Supreme deposit. OceanaGold have defined an Inferred Resource for the Supreme deposit of 0.84 million tonnes at 1.46 grams per tonne for a total of 40 000 ounces (at a 0.8 grams per tonne cut-off). Higher-grade zones of mineralisation exist within the deposit and further drilling is planned to test the extent, continuity and geological controls of the mineralised structures.

In gold ores, the range of value disclosed by ordinary mine sampling is very wide, and the number of 'samples required for a reliable average is correspondingly great. Even where a large number of samples is available the weighted mean value of the samplesalmost invariably exceeds the true gold content. In operating mines this disparity is overcome by arbitrary reduction of high assays until reconciliation is achieved, but it is frequently necessary, especIallyin exploration, to base an estimate or to reach a decision on a relatively small number of samples from underground openings or even on a few drill hole intersections. In these circumstances, a decisive influence may be exercised by the weight allowed to high assays and to low grade intersections, both of which events are, of course, dependent on the metal distribution in the ore. Where sufficient data are available, statistical analysis will measure the risk involved, but as this information is seldom to be had, the final choice becomes largely a matter of personal judgment.With this problem in mind, a study was made some years ago of the distribution of values in four Western Australian gold ores, with the primary purpose of learning from actual ore-bodies of differing types, something of the metal distribution in the smallquantities of ore involved in individual routine mine samples, and of the importance in each case of high assays. Adequate and suitable data were available in .four cases, in three of which high assays were of frequent occurrence due to the presence of free gold. The results give concrete expression to well known differences of metal distribution, and it is proposed, firstly to record the observed distribution; secondly to examine some of the consequences of the differences in the distributions limd thirdly, to comment, in the light of this data, on the vexed question of the treatment of high assays. Standard statistical procedure was employed in the compilation of the data. The assays were classified by value into groups, each group covering a range of value of 1 dwt. per ton. Assays of less than 1.0 dwt. per ton form the first group; assays equal to or greater than 1.0 dwt. and less than 2.0 dwt. comprise the second group; those equal to or greater than 2.0 dwt. and less than 3.0 dwt. appear in the third group; and so on. Where the number of samples is large, it can be assumed that the mid-value of the group is the mean value of all the samples in the group, thus the mean values of the first three groups are 0.5 dwt., 1.5 dwt. and 2.5 dwt. respectively.The number of samples in the group is the frequency of the group, but for convenience of plotting this frequency is converted into percentage of all the samples in the series.
