Conventional processing of heavy mineral deposits containing radioactive rare earth minerals such as monazite and xenotime may cause industrial hygiene problems through atmospheric dust and contamination of product concentrates. An alternative procedure has been developed in which such minerals are removed from bulk heavy mineral concentrates by flotation with little loss of other economic minerals. With fine ores, recoveries of over 95 per cent have been achieved and with coarse ores over 80 per cent, in both cases at high grade. Several flotation regimes have proven effective. The potential for generation of radioactive dust or product contamination is subsequent processing is correspondingly reduced.

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. The sulphide ores of the principal lodes of the Boulder Mines are mainly composed of a schistose guess with a varying proportion of silica and lime, containing tellurides of gold, silver and mercury, associated with iron pyrites. It is a great difficultyto obtain pure and homogeneous samples of the tellurides for analysis, and from a number of tests made with excellent specimens it was found hardly possible to procure two to agree in analysis, the precious metals being found to be combinedwith tellurium in most varying proportions indeed, a close inspection of a partially crushed specimen will reveal, even to the naked eye, the various shades of colour characteristic...

A simple process for making filter aids from coal by controlled carbonization at 800-1200·C is described.Several possible variations in reactor design have been used experimentally, involving fluidized beds of carbon or inert material, reaction of the particles while entrained in air, and a combination of entrainment and fluidization.Product yields depend upon the composition of the parent coal but are always less than the sum of the ash and fixed carbon values determined by the proximate analysis. The product yield also depends on the air-to-coal ratio, which affects the amount of coal substance burned and the temperature attained. Particle residence time and reactor temperature affect the degree of devolatilization of the product and hence its wettability. The filtration behaviour of carbonaceous filter aids is greatly influenced by the size distribution, shape and physical properties of the particles-parameters which are largely determined by fue type and particle sizing of the coal used.Carbonaceous filter aids are distinctly different from other types commonly used and extensive industrial applications are anticipated in a wide range of industries ranging from food to mineral processing.

The commercial development of the shallow (2200 ft2 400 ft) Windalia sand reservoir at Barrow Island provided the opportunity to conduct an intensive drilling programme using equipment and techniques designed for optimum performance.During the initial exploratory and reservoir delineation phase, 12 specific Windalia test wells were drilled using drilling equipment with an optimum depth range of 6QOO ft - 8000 ft and a 9 5/8 in by 7 in. casing programme was employed. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release exclusive of coring for five representative wells was 187 hr during this phase.Development drilling commenced December 1966 with one rig, with the second in operation January 1967.As of January 1 1968, 168 development wells had been completed. The two rigs employed are drive-in units equipped with a telescoping .gelf raising doubles mast.Optimum depth range with 4 1/2 in. drill pipe is 2500-4000 ft. Casing programme is 8 5/8 in. by 5 1/2 in. Efficient performance was achieved immediately. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release for 15 wells drilled early in the development programme was 99 hr.By application of experience and further modification of techniques, performance was improved to an average time of 72 hr per well for 15 wells recently completed.The major drilling problem on Barrow Island is surface hole drilling due to the very hard surface limestone combined with complete loss of circulation at sea level.In this operation, significant improvements have been effected. During the exploratory phase drilling, 12 1/4 in hole to set 9 5/8 in. casing, average penetration rate was 23 ft/hr. At the commencement of the development programme penetration rate, drilling 10 5/8 in. hole to set 8 5/8 in. casing, was 28 ft/hr for the 15 early wells considered, improving to 55 ft/hr for the 15 recent wells considered.This programme is a team effort and much credit must be given to the enthusiastic co-operation of the two drilling contractors.The current field record is 2 days 4 hr with a 4 1/2 hr move including the drilling of mousehole and rathole.

The conditions under which vanadium is rendered insoluble by silica in the alkali-roast process have been investigated starting with both slag and reagent-grade materials. The inert phase is a glass formed slowlyfrom soluble NaV03 produced at lower temperatures. It contains approximately 30 per cent V in a partly reduced state; iron is not a principal component. Some of the vanadium in the inert phase is slowly returned to a soluble form by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere below the temperature at which the glass is formed (750°C). As the reaction leading to the required, soluble form of vanadium is also slow between 600 and 750° optimization and control of the temperature profile and atmosphere in the furnace, and the residence time of the solids, are necessary to ensure high vanadium extraction during subsequent leaching.

A typical high silica low grade magnesite from the Salem area of Southern India, was used in studies to develop a suitable flotation system involving commercially inexpensive sodium oleate as the collector together with other reagents which can give a product of the required grade with an acceptable recovery. It was found that the presence of metallic ions such as Cu+, Fe+++ or Ca++ introduced by the addition of their salts, or by their formation with the addition of hydrochloric acid to react with magnesium and calcium carbonate in the me, can act as effective depressants for silica. The addition of 'hydrochloric acid' was found to give best results.

Effective land-use planning requires accurate knowledge of mineral resource potential. Mineral companies during reconnaissance exploration, feasibility investigations and mine development also use this type of analysis. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a two-year project reviewing the resource potential of the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Spatial prospectivity models have been developed as part of this resource assessment process, using computer based statistical pattern recognition techniques to delineate areas that are prospective for mineral deposits and to test deposit genesis models. Digital GIS data-sets of mineral occurrence were correlated against geology and exploration information. The distribution of mesotherrnal shear zone gold deposits in the Reefton Goldfield, were examined against geological data-sets from both the regional (QMAP) and local prospect-scale mapping. Weights of evidence analysis generated a correlation matrix that highlights relationships and degrees of association that might otherwise not normally be recognised.   Mesothermal shear zone gold deposits have strong positive spatial correlations with Greenland Group host rocks and areas with moderate to high quartz vein densities; moderate-strong positive correlation with regions <500 m from folds, with regions <600 m from faults and five to eight kilometres from granite contacts; moderate correlations with Ntrending fault and fold segments; and no/weak/poor correlations with fault intersections, fold-fault intersections, bends in regional structures and magnetic and radiometric data. The regional and prospect scale data sets give different results, with the more detailed prospect scale mapping giving generally better correlations. This emphasises the value of detailed geological mapping in the exploration process.   Maps generated by prospectivity modelling consistently highlighted areas of known mineralisation and generate targets where follow-up investigation is warranted. The prospectivity per unit area provides a measurable value that should change as new information comes to hand and, in addition to highlighting targets, can be used to measure the impact of increased exploration expenditure and assess the effectiveness of exploration investment.

Geophysical methods are useful non-invasive means of collecting subsurface information on the environmental impacts of resource developments. Techniques such as seismic refraction, ground probing radar and magnetics are well established tools for environmental studies of waste disposal sites. Repeat resistivity surveys, gravity surveys, and infrared or multispectral remote sensing hold great promise for monitoring environmental changes. Examples from New Zealand include geothermal field monitoring, which may involve the use of geophysics for .detecting changes of surface thermal activity, hydrothermal eruptions, induced earthquakes, contamination or depletion of shallow groundwater, and subsurface fluid recharge. Other examples include resistivity monitoring of contained effluent disposal ponds, tailings dams and landfills. Experience has shown that care is necessary to identify the natural variability of the parameter measured before drawing conclusions regarding an observed change.

Sedimentary pyrites from Tasmania have Se contents that are high for it province showing no overall Se enrichment. Sulphides from Devonian granitic rocks, and related cassiterite-sulphide deposits, Sn-Wand PbZn-Ag fissure veins have similar and relatively low Se contents, and pyrites from Devonian gold-quartz veins have very low Se contents. The high concentrations of Se at Mount Lyell are consistent with enrichment in pyritic Cu deposits in volcanic rocks elsewhere, and the dispersion of Se is consistent with a surface volcanic origin for several of the orebodies. In contrast, sulphides from Cambrian volcanic rocks and associated granitic rocks, and from the Rosebery and Hercules pyritic PbZn deposits, also believed to be of volcanic origin, are impoverished in Se.In the Mount Bischoff cassiterite-sulphide deposits there is no relationship between Se content of sulphides and temperature of formation as indicated by fluid inclusion studies, and sulphides from Devonian ores with different temperatures of formation have similar Se contents.The Se content of Tasmanian sulphides appears to be an unsatisfactory discriminant of their genesis and temperature of formation but in volcanic terrains may be a useful pathfinder for Cu concentrations.

The purpose of this paper is to cover in a general way the extent, geology, quality of product, working methods and trials of the coal mining industry. of New South Wales from 1946 to the present day, with particular reference to the Western field.It must be clearly understood that any opinions expressed are those of the author and not necessarily those of the Joint Coal Board.The extent of the Western coal field at the present stage of investigation may be said to be from a few miles east of Katoomha to a few miles north-west of the township of Ulan, the total distance being 150 miles.To the west of a line from the Western Highway from Lithgow through Wallerawang, PortIand, Tyldesley, Ben Bullen, Kandos and Rylstone, there are no signs of coal except for one or two outiiers in the neighbourhood of Portland. To the east of this line the coal-bearing areas extend to the seaboard approximately 80 miles to the east.GEOLOGY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COAL SEAMSThe Western coal measures belong to the Upper or Newcastle series, which have been correlated with the Sciritheru or lllawarra, and the North-western or Gunnedah measures. Being close to the margin of the coal basin the Western measures have an average thickness of only 200 ft. to 500 ft., or approximately one-half of the maximum development of the Newcastle measures. They are underlain by Upper Marine beds which in turn rest directly on Devonian rocks.

The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

The passage of chloroform vapour in a carrier of oxygen through two nickel sulphide ores heated to 380°C converted the nickel to the water soluble chloride form. In one ore the nickel (2·75 per cent) was presentas violarite ((Ni, Fe)3S4) whereas in the second it was present as pentlandite, ((Fe, Ni)9S8) (4·9 per cent Ni).A similar technique was utilized to convert nickel in nickeliferous laterites (1·6 per cent Ni) into a soluble chloride using town gas instead of oxygen as a carrier.With both techniques greater than 90 per cent extraction was achieved.

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is second in size only to Norilsk, the gigantic metalliferous deposit. Olympic Dam is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. The deposit is typified by texturally destructive brecciation and intense iron metasomatism of the Roxby Downs Granite, bedded clastic facies rocks and mafic-ultramafic dykes. The deposit contains over 100 minerals. Copper mineralisation consists of chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite. Uraninite, coffinite and brannerite are the dominant uranium-bearing minerals. Gold mineralisation consists of electrum, tellurides and Au-Cu alloys. Hessite is the major silver-bearing mineral. The economic minerals are disseminated throughout the breccia matrix where the average grain sizes of the Cu-sulfide, uranium, gold and silver minerals are ~50, 20, <5, <5 microns, respectively.A significant number of sampling theory-based test programs have been completed since the mid-1990s to establish sampling nomographs, select appropriate sampling (ie split versus chip and interval lengths) and sample preparation protocols, quantify the errors associated with each subsampling stage, determine the practical uncertainty limits of Olympic Dam matrix-matched standards, and identify improvement opportunities related to the ongoing assaying quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) program. Invaluable knowledge and unexpected insights gained from sampling studies at Olympic Dam have helped to improve our understanding of the distribution of economic and deleterious elements within the Olympic Dam deposit.CITATION:Ehrig, K J and Pitard, F F, 2017. Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Relationships identified between existing BID mineralisation, geology and structure has aided in targeting additional mineralisation across the tenement and highlighted other previously untested areas that warrant further investigation.CITATION:Tylkowski, L N, Corlis, N J, McDonald, G D, Petts, A E, Jennings, M F and Thomas, B J, 2013. It is a great honour to address our Institute as President, but the choice of a suitable subject was not an easy one. In the past when the presidential address was given at an annual conference the subject usually related to the conference or industry concerned; more recently the subjects have been more philosophical and this is a distinct advantage to me.I appreciate that I am addressing an informed audience and I am sure' that you are well advised in many of the points that I hope to leave with you. Unlike the specialist who gets to know more and more about less and less and eventually knows everything about nothing, I am one of the group who gets to know less and less about more and more and eventually knows nothing about everything.I hope you will appreciate this point whilst you are listening to me.In recent years I have been closely associated with the problem that troubles most governments of our time: the competition of many groups of differing backgrounds for the land that is available to the nation.This is of particular interest to the industry with which we are concerned as it is of critical importance to the discovery and development of future reserves of minerals and metals. Part of my daily task is involved with the administration of legislation for mining operations and the conditions under which such operations may be undertaken, in implementing government policies relating to mining, and in designing and administering legislationdirected to safety and health in mines.Most of our members are involved in exploration or in day-to-day problems associated with the production of minerals or the management of companies in these pursuits and would be aware of many of the conflicting viewpoints on priorities.F. F. Espie in his presidential address of 1975 'On being a minority', made the point that our Institute found that the mining industry had a great communication 'Problem with the Australian people.I believe that this is one of our major problems.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The formation of orogenic gold deposits is commonly a two-stage process. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. The expansion of hydrometallurgical operations, declining ore grades and upwardly spiralling production increases the demand for fresh and recycled water with low levels of contaminants. The minerals industry is also increasingly being forced both by regulatory and cost pressures to reduce the amount of liquid waste they produce. This requires a strong focus on waste reduction by recycling, regeneration and reuse. However, these measures are often not enough in arid countries for a forward progress and expansion of their mining activities.   It is often the case that in the arid and semi-arid countries the only available water is either sea water or underground (brackish to hypersaline) saline waters. Brackish waters can be desalted at a reasonable cost but the desalination of highly saline waters is challenging and expensive.   There are emerging reports that sea water and in some cases hypersaline underground waters are now used by various mining industries as process water. This study explores the possibility of the use of sea water in various mineral processing and hydrometallurgical processes and briefly discusses the benefits and problems related to the use of saline waters at the mine and mill site. Several cases studies and preliminary laboratory test results are presented.

THIS has been a much-neglected branch of engineering. With the majority of industries labour is the chief item of trouble and expense. Anything that will reduce trouble and increase efficiency is well worth considering. It is only of recent years that any attempt has been made on a scientific basis to improve conditions sporadic attempts having been made from time to time, privately and by law. Some have been successful, others unsuccessful not necessarily the fault of those who initiated the ideas, though naturally mistakes were made in some cases for want of experience, but those whom it was desired to benefit were not always prepared for the change, and by their distrust hampered schemes instead of assisting them.Man power is generally more expensive than machinery, though there are exceptions, such as when a small amount of work has to be done in a place where machinery does not exist, and it would not pay to instal any or where labour is cheap, and skilled workmen are scarce as in some tropical countries. When machinery is first introduced it generally causes the suspicion that it will deprive men of their work. It may cause men to vary the conditions of their work, and in some individual cases, when men are unable to conform to changed circumstances it may result in a certain amount of hardship; but, after all, the less competent must not hold back progress for the general good. Besides, changes as a rule do not take place suddenly, so old hands can generally find work at their particular calling 'till nature requires them to retire. Titanium is not yet being produced on a commercial scale despite the facts that it has some impressive properties, and that it occurs very abundantly in easily-mined, highgrade oxide ores. One important reason for this is that the excellent mechanical properties of the metal were not widely recognised and appreciated until about twenty years ago.Another factor which has tended to retard progress in titanium metallurgy has been the realization that the oxide minerals of titanium are very stable; in other words, considerable energy has to be expended to reduce the oxide to metal. Table 1 presents the minimum energies which would have to be expended to produce one ton of each of the metals, aluminium, magnesium, titanium and iron from their respective oxides under theoretically ideal conditions at normal temperature and pressure. At higher temperatures, the minimum energy requirements are different, but the values for the various metals still fall in the same order as indicated in Table 1.In actual fact, the energy consumption in the case of any particular metal is higher than the ideal value by an amount which can be determined only by' the results of plant practice.
