The performances of ten field-scale experimental final covers were evaluated over an eight-year period. The covers were evaluated as part of the rehabilitation of acid generating coarse coal reject dumps and opencast coalmines in the Northern KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa. The main purpose of the experimental covers was to restrict rainfall infiltration into acid generating coal discard. The mean average rainfall over the monitoring period was 839 mm with 84 per cent occurring between October and April. The average evaporation was 2100 mm. The site is described as a ædry siteÆ since the evaporation exceeds rainfall by a significant margin. Approximately 30 per cent of rainfall infiltrated the uncovered cells. Rainfall infiltration into the fine coal discard was reduced to 20 per cent and 15 per cent for a 300 mm and 500 mm cover respectively. Infiltration was reduced to ten and 12 per cent of rainfall for fine coal discard provided with a 1000 mm double soil cover and a compacted bottom layer. This relatively high infiltration was probably caused by moisture being entrapped in the bottom retentive layer, and not being released by evapotranspiration. The best performing cover comprised 1000 mm single soil with a compacted bottom layer and infiltration was reduced to four per cent of rainfall. Rainfall infiltration into sloped cells varied between seven per cent and 14 per cent of rainfall. The computer software, SoilCover, was used to predict infiltration and moisture content in the cover. Predictions of rainfall infiltration were accurate, but were less accurate for covers where the hydraulic properties of field compacted soils were not adequately characterised. Oxygen ingress was significantly reduced for cells provided with a 1000 mm cover. Oxygen concentrations were generally below one per cent, with the exception during exceptionally dry periods when the cover dried out, resulting in increased oxygen ingress. For other covers, and the uncovered cells, oxygen concentrations were close to atmospheric concentrations. During the eight-year monitoring period, acid breakthrough occurred in five of the cells, including three uncovered cells, one cell with a 300 mm cover and one sloped cell. In contrast, cells covered with 1000 mm, bottom compacted soils shows a marked improvement of leachate quality, indicating that sulfide oxidation processes have been slowed. There was a distinct relationship between oxygen ingress and leachate quality for all of the cells. No cover degradation was evident over the eight-year period, except for some erosion observed on a sloped cell. The results indicate that the onset of acid drainage can be delayed by perhaps hundreds of years and salinity loads can be reduced by more than 90 per cent, if coarse coal reject dumps in the KwaZulu-Natal provinces in South Africa are provided by an adequate cover system. These research outcomes can be extrapolated and applied to other dry site regions where similar materials are being considered.

The Challenger Gold deposit was discovered in 1995 by Dominion Mining Ltd in a remote western area of the Gawler Craton in South Australia. Mine development commenced in 2002 with initial production from an open pit supplemented by ore from a very small adjacent auxiliary pit. Development of the underground mine commenced in 2004. The orebody plunge of just less than 30 degrees requires careful attention to mine design. Production from the M1 orebody, with less than 800 ounces per vertical metre (ovm) and very limited æsurgeÆ capacity, requires careful scheduling and implementation to ensure continuity of ore feed for milling. Initial production results from underground stopes included more dilution than anticipated. The narrow, high-grade zones proved to have much more complex geometry than early interpretations had indicated. Greatly improved understanding of the mineralisation controls resulted in important changes being made to the underground mine design and method. Coupled with careful control of development and drilling and blasting practices, this resulted in an immediate reduction in dilution and high recoveries of the resource. The benefits of these changes flowed through in the 2005/06 financial year, resulting in a 150 per cent increase in gold production to 108 080 oz and a sharp reduction in cash operating costs to A$280/oz. This was followed in 2006/07 with production of 108 91 oz of gold at an operating cost of $309/oz and in 2007/08 with 109 326 oz of gold at $367/oz. Production to June 2008 has been mainly from the M1 orebody, with the lowest stoping to date on the 580 m Level (615 m below surface) above development mining on the 520 Level. The rate of vertical advance of mining this orebody has averaged 150 vertical metres per year. The increased current combined JORC compliant resource and reserve position of over one million ounces, now includes the M2 and M3 orebodies with a current total average gold inventory up to 1400 - 1500 ovm. Exploration has intersected other shoots and all shoots are open at depth. The adjacent M2 and M3 orebodies are being developed for stoping. The narrow width of these zones from 1 m up to 4 m will require continued focus on ore zone definition, accurate development and careful drill and blast practice. In addition, to minimise cost increases in the current period of rapidly escalating labour, equipment, consumables and energy costs, high productivities will need to be maintained to allow the established rapid mining advance to continue at low unit costs.

"Booster fans are relatively rare in Australian coal mines. However, as mines become progressivelydeeper it is likely that such fans will be increasingly adopted as a method to sustain or improve the ventilation of underground workings. The reasons why booster fans may be an att ractive alternative include: increased cost of sinking additional ventilation shafts with greater seam depths; environmental objections to shaft sinking projects; and increasing urbanisation and surface constraints limiting availability of potential ventilation shaft sites. As Tahmoor Colliery movedinto its northern lease the ventilation constraints became the limiting factor on production. Thelimitations of the old workings meant that the existing ventilation system would be inadequateto sustain the required production. Extensive ventilation modelling was carried out to evaluatevarious potential solutions and the recommended option was the installation of a booster fanor fans, to gain underground access to an already approved shaft site in the northern lease.Proposals were sought from recognised fan manufacturers and various alternative arrangements were tendered. Ultimately the choice was between one large centrifugal fan and a set (three or four) of smaller æauxiliary-likeÆ fans in parallel. The successful tender was for a single centrifugal, an arrangement very similar to the booster fans that have been operating eff ectively at Westcliff Colliery for a number of years. This paper describes the current ventilation network, evaluation of the ventilation options, the fan selection process, and the project status to date."

Processing of lead-zinc and copper ores by Mount Isa Mines Limited produces large quantit- ies of concentrator tailings waste which is pumped as a slurry to special dams where the solids are allowed to settle and dry out. These areas are unattractive and show no signs of encroachment by plant life even though the surfaces of some dams have remained undisturbed for more than a decade. During 1970 Mount Isa Mines Limited commenced a long term research program in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, University of Queensland to deter- mine possible methods of establishing a plant cover on this material. Research has defined the major factors limiting plant growth in the tailings medium. Modification of the edaphic conditions through fertilizer inputs, particularly of phosphorus and nitrogen, and alteration of "soil" physical properties by incorporation of mulching mater- ials, provided conditions which allowed plant growth. The outstanding "soil" amendment treatment was incorporation of fly ash, a waste product of the company's coal fired power stations. A range of crop and pasture species have been selected which have grown well with adequate irrigation under the amended conditions in the field. Further research is assessing a range of native plant species and agronomic techniques to provide a stable plant cover on the tailings dams.

This paper describes the methodology developed to establish a sequentia mining plan applied to a coal mine, using computers. Firstly, isocontou. maps were generated from the drill holes and outcrop description information, representing the thickness and depth of the rock formation: present in the mine site. The procedure relies on the repeated application of the cross validation techniques, until the standard deviation of thi estimation is reduced to a minimum.From this map the coal reserves of the two coal seams, the overburdet (separated in hard and soft material) and the interburden were calculated After that, the maps were transferred in digital files to AutoCAI software, where different mining plan simulations were performed. 7b ore evaluation in each case was done automatically, including tonnages volumes and stripping relations. The final mine configuration consider the economic aspects of the operation.

An inrush of water or mud into an underground mine, or sudden subsidence above mining voids represent low probability but high impact risks in underground mining. About two such incidents involving multiple fatalities or loss of production are reported each year worldwide. On average, Australia experiences one such incident every three to four years. This paper reports the development of a Standard that is intended to eliminate fatalities due to inrushes and subsidence.

Knowledge of the hydrogeological setting of a mine forms an integral part of a mining operation. Groundwater impacts, initially, on mine feasibility. Then, on commencement of mining, it interacts on the operational components of dewatering, water supply, tailings leachates, mine wall stability, stormwater run-off, water disposal, impact on regional environment and mine closure planning. The recording of hydrogeological information is frequently overlooked during resource and reserve definition as well as during the course of mining when prime opportunity exists for the collection and collation of this data. In recent times, the exclusion of hydrogeological data has been exacerbated by use of high air pressure drill rigs that exclude water inflow. The recording of water data has been further inhibited by the use of computer coded drill logs that do not include the site geologistÆs or drillerÆs comments on drilling problems and observations associated with groundwater intersections. Geologists now infrequently directly supervise drill rigs, but visit the rig only intermittently to evaluate drilling progress. They do not see first hand drill performance characteristics at water make zones. Drill cuttings, as drill chips and cores, are now mostly logged away from the drill site so that wet sample locations, visual water flow evidence and verbal comments from the driller are not recorded. As a result, mine geologists now do not direct adequate attention to the delineation of lithologies and structures that store and transmit water. This paper provides examples of water sighting and recording techniques applicable to a mining operation. Examples are also provided where hydrogeological conditions have been disregarded with serious impact on the progress of mining. The recording of hydrogeological data should be maintained and formatted by the site geologists into a useful database for review as and when required by specialists in hydrogeology, geotechnical and mining engineering and the environment. The information can be coded by the site geologist for inclusion into the mine database. A groundwater dataset, compiled during the progress of field investigations, will save the considerable cost of re-drilling and hole re-entry testing which would otherwise be required to provide base level hydrogeological information required for progress of mining. Apart from working mine use, a hydrogeological dataset is a necessary component for planning mining closure and mine legacy conditions.

Nuclear techniques have been used to determine the solids weight fraction (W) and ash content of (fine) coal in slurries independent of voidage variations. The method is based on the correlation between W and the hydrogen concentration Hsl (wt/wt) of the slurry. Hsl is determined by combining measurements of neutron moderation and ?-ray transmission. Both Wand ash content are determined by combining the above measurements with the ash-sensitive measurement of X-ray backscatter compensated by a measurement of iron K X-ray intensity.The nuclear analysis system, called the SIRO coal slurry gauge, has been proved in a six-week plant trial at the BHP Steelworks washery at Newcastle, NSW. Several probes, each containing a radioisotope source and scintillation detector, were immersed directly into the coal slurry in the feed box upstream from the bank of flotation cells. For 140 samples W, ash and voidage varied in the ranges of 0 to 13 wt percent, 26 to 41 wt per cent and 0 to 4 vol. per cent, respectively. The r.m.s. difference in solids weight fraction, determined by probe measurements and conventional assay, was 0·52 wt per cent. Ash was determined with an r.m.s. difference of 2·0 wt percent in the coal. Better sampling techniques were used in the last half of the plant trial, and r.m.s. differences were 0.35 wt per cent solids and 1·5 wt per cent ash.

The Karara iron ore project is a magnetite operation consist of open pit mining and concentrator to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The concentrator has adopted three stages of comminution, ie fine crushing in the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), primary ball milling and fine grinding in the TowerMill plus magnetic separation in between these comminution devices. Since 2014, the concentrator has increased the plant feed rate by 18 per cent. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 13 per cent to a Bond work index value of 15 kWh/t that led to a coarser flotation feed. Karara Mine has decided to shift the comminution workload from the primary ball mill to the TowerMill circuit by bypassing the 100 µm fine screen in between the ball mill and TowerMill circuits. This action has increased the circuit feed particle size distribution with a top size close to 1 mm. The specific energy consumption of the TowerMill circuit was approximately 3.4 kWh/t, and the circuit product sizes (P80) were ranged between 38 and 45 µm. A joint process improvement exercise was carried out to reduce the circuit product size closer to the magnetite liberation size, ie 35 µm. Among the activities were circuit audit, recommendation for improvement, modelling and simulation, multicomponent analysis, implementation of recommendations and quantification of the improvement. One of the key findings was the density effect of multicomponent minerals in the hydrocyclone. The analysis revealed that the low density coarser gangue minerals were bypassed to the hydrocyclone overflow stream that has resulted in a coarser particle size distribution. Meanwhile, more than 20 per cent of fine (-35 µm) high-density magnetite particles were recycled back to the mill through the hydrocyclone underflow stream and increased the circulating load. Based on these outcomes, several recommendations such as conversion to bottom feed configuration, use of smaller grinding media, high operating hydrocyclone pressure and additional grinding power to the TowerMill circuit were made to improve the overall circuit performances. Karara Mine has prioritised to implement those recommendations that have a minimal financial implication. Full-scale plant trials with bottom feed configuration and 17 mm grinding media were conducted to evaluate its performances. These trials have indicated that the grinding efficiency in the TowerMill was enhanced by 10 – 30 per cent. In May 2017, all the five TowerMills were converted to the bottom feed configuration. Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an underground sublevel caving mine located in north-west Queensland with a production rate of 6.4 Mt/a. The mine has sublevels spaced with a 25 m vertical interval. The production process on each level starts with the drilling and firing of a blind uphole rise to start the slot extraction. These rises are fired as a single shot and routinely need to achieve a design height of 22 m to 30 m depending on the local mine geometry. If the rise fails to perform as designed then the production phase of the level is delayed with significant rework required to remedy the situation.This paper describes the process that the EHM team has followed to improve the first time performance of each rise. The improvement process commenced with a review of results from previous rises and resulted in the identification of a number of improvement opportunities. A revised holistic approach was established for the process, which included involvement from operators and engineers. Through continued measurement and review of rise performance, inputs to the process were improved to a point where reliable results can now be expected. The successful performance of subsequent rises has been verified through a comprehensive quality assurance quality control (QA/QC) program. Before quality control processes were implemented, the success rate of blind uphole rises was only 11 per cent (one out of nine rises) at EHM. In comparison, the success rates have been vastly improved to 25 per cent (one out of four) and 75 per cent (three out of four) respectively following two stages of improvements. A new porphyry copper gold district has been discovered at Goonumbla near Parkes in central New South Wales. Endeavour 26 North is the largest deposit known to date with a possible resource of 166.4 million tonnes at 0.74% copper, 0.12g/tonne gold and 1.7g/tonne silver, using a cut-off grade 0.3% copper. Mineralisation is primarily bornite in the higher grade zones and chalcopyrite in the peripheral lower grade zones. Most of the copper, gold mineralisation is associated with potassic alteration. Two mineralised quartz monzonite porphyry intrusive stages have been identified and these are related at depth to a large monz- onite stock which may have been the source of some of the mineralisation. On the basis of detailed paragenesis studies, the potassic zone can be divided into three symmetric subzones. The low grade inner potassium feldspar subzone is confined to the later intrusive porphyry. The outer potassium feldspar subzone is the most highly mineralised alteration halo due to the focussed superimposition of two hydrothermal cycles which have overprinted intrusive and volcanic rocks. The fringing biotite potassium feldspar subzone reveals alteration minerals which are developed early in the paragenesis. Fracture controlled quartz sericite alteration with low sulphide content, fringes and, in part overprints the potassic zone. The restricted pipe-like nature of the alteration zones and related mineralisation suggests that Endeavour 26 North is repres- entative of a multiphase focussed porphyry copper gold system.

Drilling mineral sand deposits has specific challenges, which are different from drilling hard rock deposits: Drilled sequences are represented by non-consolidated free-flowing sands to semi-consolidated clayey sands and indurated layers. Valuable heavy minerals (ilmenite, rutile, zircon, leucoxene) have an average density of 4.6 g/cm3, which is significantly heavier than the hosting sand matrix; mainly represented by quartz (density = 2.6 g/cm3). The large difference in the mineral densities can result in sample segregation in the drilling rods and capturing devices causing biased composition of the recovered samples. The drilled strata can contain beds of consolidated sediments, hard pan lenses and concretions. Therefore, chosen drilling equipment should be flexible and permit a switch from drilling the free-flowing sands to hard rock drilling. Thickness of the sand hosted mineralisation varies from several metres to more than 170 m. Mineralisation is distributed above and below the water table. Evaluation of the mineral sands deposits is based on hundreds of drill holes and many thousands of samples, therefore drilling methods should be fast and cost effective. The drilling methods commonly used for mineral sand deposit evaluation, include aircore, triple tube diamond and sonic; including its variants, such as vibrocore drilling technique. The ability of the studied drilling techniques to properly address the above listed challenges in mineral sand deposits, whilst maximising the quality of the obtained samples has been compared in three deposits: Corridor Sands (Mozambique), Richards Bay (Republic of South Africa) and Fort-Dauphin (Madagascar).This study has shown that aircore samples tend to be negatively grade biased, underestimating the heavy minerals content, in particular when drilled intervals are located below the water table. Triple tube diamond core method can produce non-biased samples. However, results can be marred by incorrectly chosen drilling mud. Sonic drilling is a relatively new technique based on a high frequency vibratory technology. It is the only production drilling technique that allows a continuous relatively undisturbed sample of unlithified sands to be obtained. The main limitations of this technology preventing its wider use for developing mineral sand resources are the relatively high drilling costs, in particular when the depth of drilling exceeds 100 m, and speed of drilling advance.

Amongst those whose task it is to design tumbling mills and other comminution machines there is an almost religious divide between devotees of the Bond method and devotees of other methods developed in more recent times. For a decade or so the issue was between the Bond power-based methods and the JKMRC (JK) simulation based approach. The newest method to challenge the status quo is power-based and was developed by Steve Morrell. As the title suggests, this paper will take some liberty at concluding that Fred Bond and Steve Morrell may be separated by history, but not by their approaches to their individual contributions to the science of comminution. Another driver for the paper is that although it is good to have diversity of thought, the existing divisions are problematic for those of us signing public disclosure documents. If alternative design methods produce materially different outcomes for the mill duty, then at least one of them is wrong or being used incorrectly. At some point the unsustainable argument may need to be put in a court of law that we metallurgists have two or more materially different design methods, each of which is correct! Therefore, perhaps a resolution is needed before this occurs?The works of both Fred Bond and Steve Morrell are each directly related to their contemporary grinding mill design and operational environments. Both their approaches are empirical, borne of observing and measuring real world situations. Both worked with theories that preceded them, gathered their own data and then each saw shortfalls in the status quo.Fred Bond was an escapee from revolution, a victim of The Great Depression, and had several near death experiences during his early site-based career. Perhaps he was fortuitously rescued from himself when asked by Allis Chalmers (A-C) to set up its rock testing laboratory in Milwaukie in 1930. Fred’s testing led him to conclude that neither the Kick nor the Von Rittinger theories explained his measurements. His writings on the failings of these old theories caused a divide between devotees of the old and new methods at that time. After many years, and much thought and plotting of data (the old way!), he came up with his now-famous equations (and his Third Theory) which have stood the test of time, certainly in the world of Bond-era machines.Coming from England via several African diamond mines, Steve Morrell immersed himself into the comminution world of the JK in Brisbane about a decade after Fred passed on. The JK had developed its semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) simulation framework using its own pendulum breakage tester, itself a derivative of the twin pendulum impact device invented by Bond decades earlier. At the JK Steve developed his authoritative Tumbling Mill Power equations and was involved in real world analysis of comminution problems on the global stage. Steve’s JK experience coincided with the demise of the rod mill, the rise of autogenous grinding (AG) and SAG milling and a rapid expansion in concentrator capacity.Morrell left the JK to pursue his own interests, which included ongoing consulting work, now demanded by the comminution world. He then turned to investigating a growing list of discrepancies between the opinions of designers and theoreticians, and the factual outcomes. The Morrell Method of design arose from this re-examination of ore testing, real world operating data and these glaring and expensive discrepancies between design and outcome. Production targets are the basis for almost every decision made by operations personnel in the daily operation of a concentrator. It is the production targets that determine how the plant is operated and therefore determine its efficiency. However, to achieve maximum plant efficiency production targets must be relevant to the process and achievable.In RoseberyÆs case, for many years, production targets were taken from budget data which, with the exception of mill feed tonnes and grades were carried forward from the previous budget. The zinc concentrate grade target was fixed at 57 per cent Zn, a long-term average; it was the accepted æstandardÆ for Rosebery. Historical data showed this target was never consistently achieved and plant efficiency was highly variable.Investigations into the possible causes for the variable performance ruled out plant and mechanical issues. Despite the Rosebery concentratorÆs age the plant and equipment are more than serviceable and reliable. The mineralogy of the ore and specifically the iron content of the sphalerite was found to be the most significant determinant of zinc concentrate grade. It was found with increasing frequency that the zinc grade of the sphalerite in the ore was below the zinc concentrate grade target. Consequently on these occasions attempts to meet the required concentrate target destabilised the process resulting in plant inefficiencies.Using the correlation between iron and zinc, data modelling was able to accurately predict the maximum zinc concentrate grade achievable for any ore type. By using on stream analysis instrumentation the operations personnel are now provided with constantly updated concentrate grade targets. By knowing the mineralogical limits of the ore at the time it is being treated process stability is maintained allowing plant efficiency to be optimised. The current methodology for delineating and subsequently evaluating coal reserves is based on the use of vertical drill holes and surface based geophysics/geology. These techniques have three major problems, these being respectively:-a) Vertical drill holes can only provide a small sample of the coal seam and stratigraphy. Therefore the planar variation in coal reserve and environment parameters can only be approximated.b) Although surface based geophysics has had its fair share of success in recent years, there are still environments which have masked the finding of major structures.c) Access to drill sites is difficult at some locations due to mountaineous terrain, standing water and environmental impact.

Rio Tinto’s Hope Downs Operations are currently mining iron ore in their South Central Pit. Prior to the commencement of mine operations, Hope Downs carried out an extensive archaeological investigation and identified an ancient rock shelter lying within the proposed mine boundaries. The site is significant to the traditional owners/custodians of the land in this part of the Pilbara, and thus the final pit design was changed to preserve the rock shelter, which now lies 30 m outside the mine boundary. In order to further preserve this ancient dwelling from blast-induced damage, blast design procedures were improved over time to minimise the vibration impact when blasting close to the shelter. Blasting and vibration monitoring commenced in May 2008 using pyrotechnic delay sequences and normal-direction firing. In October 2009 electronic delays were used to reverse-fire blasts close to the shelter in order to create a damage zone between the initiating holes and the rock shelter. A detailed statistical analysis of the vibration data shows a reduction in the higher levels of vibration for blasts fired after October 2009, which is most likely caused by the created damage zone. In May 2010, a site-specific vibration model was developed and implemented, and based on Monte Carlo waveform superposition. This model was used to give a further insight and improvement to the blast delay sequences when blasting close to the shelter. However, such models are expensive to implement and have limitations, which reduces their potential for estimating the probability of getting an excessive vibration due to a given blast design. In this regard, it is more realistic and significantly less expensive to use a recently developed probabilistic analysis based on simple charge weight scaling. This analysis shows that there was a higher probability of exceeding prescribed vibration limits at the rock shelter for blasts fired before October 2009 than there was for blasts fired after October 2009.

The term Engineer of Record (EoR) is commonly used in North America and South Africa to define the responsible person for the design, construction and operational phases of a tailings storage facility (TSF). Recently, this role has been elevated in prominence within Australia, but what does it really mean? Recent updates to international TSF guidelines suggests appointing an EoR is good practice, but where does the responsibilities of the EoR start and finish. Interestingly, both Samarco and Mount Polley failures had active EoR’s in place. This suggests that nominating an EoR alone, is not the full answer to mitigating the potential for a TSF failure. Appropriate construction and operational practices are key to the success of the design of TSFs, where all too often, operators ignore the operating plans developed by the designer. To be successful, a key consideration of the EoR role, is involvement in the operational phase of the TSF. This requires ‘buy-in’ from the mine managers and a change in the way TSFs are perceived by site. This paper explores how the roles and responsibilities of the EoR can assist in improving governance of TSFs if implemented effectively and what role the client has to ensure the success of the EoR.

The decline of ore grades on land, increasing demand and high prices for various minerals have led to an increased interest in mining the deep ocean sea floor. The potential deep ocean reserves are vast and in some circumstances the grades are high enough to consider mining. However, the consequences of such mining are as yet uncertain. This paper will present the results of a comparative assessment of life cycle impacts of deep ocean minerals. Two alternative extraction technologies from different deep ocean resource types were examined and key commodities are considered. Initial results indicate that the energy requirements will be higher than the average land-based resources, but may fall within the range of the deepest terrestrial mines.CITATION:McLellan, B C, 2015. Charcoal produced from Syzygium Zeylanicum (local name: Yakada Maran = iron killer) trees were widely used in ancient Sri Lankan iron smelting practices. In this study, relict charcoal from Syzygium Zeylanicum tree trunks, branches and leaves were analysed for the first time. Unusually high concentrations of calcium oxalate (CaC2O4.H2O – CaOX) crystals were identified preserved in plant cell structures by optical mineralogy and SEM analysis. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) of CaOX showed that it displayed three decomposition stages, releasing H2O at 177°C, CO at 493°C and CO2 at 750°C. Following the identification of CaOX in Sri Lankan charcoal, a series of reduction tests on a low-grade, high-P iron ore fine sample (high SiO2: 5 wt. per cent; Al2O3 4 wt. per cent; P: 0.135 wt. per cent) doped with CaOX were carried out at various temperatures. Samples were analysed by XRF, SEM and EPMA to determine the degree of reduction and the effect of reduction on the deportment of impurities, in particular P. Reduction tests at 800°C and 900°C with 5 wt. per cent CaOX showed that the reducibility increased to over 65 per cent. At temperatures above 900°C, P was located mainly within a fine, interstitial glass matrix suggesting that the CaOX flux enhanced removal of P from iron-rich pre-cursor phases to form glass. Preliminary magnetic separation tests to remove the P-rich interstitial glass were unsuccessful due to the fine grain size. Further complete reduction tests at temperatures above 1200°C with addition of coke to convert the iron oxides into Fem were conducted with samples doped with 10 wt. per cent CaOX, 10 wt. per cent CaCO3 and equivalent undoped samples. Results confirmed the preferential P-incorporation into a glassy matrix in the CaOX samples although some rare P incorporation into the metallic phase was noted. Experimental results, including comparisons with the CaCO3 fluxed and undoped samples, are discussed in view of the potential for CaOX flux for removing P (and potentially other impurities) from P-rich iron ores.

High-accuracy, solid-state digital reference barometers have proven to be well suited to conducting underground barometric pressure surveys. The only problem is their expense; at least A$4000 each. For this reason, and because barometric pressure surveys are not a routine undertaking, very few mines have been able to justify the purchase of suitable instruments. The author knows of only three Australian metalliferous mines that own them.However, this may soon change given the recent development of low-cost, mass-produced miniature barometric pressure transducers. These transducers were developed to provide an altimeter function in the latest generation of smartphones. The main purpose of the inbuilt altimeter function is to allow the smartphone to be aware of its altitude when the global positioning system satellite signal is lost.This paper describes a prototype barometer that was constructed using one of the most accurate of the latest generation of piezo-resistive smartphone barometric pressure transducers. The prototype instrument was constructed for less than five per cent of the cost of a commercially available digital reference barometer. The prototype was subsequently tested against a reference barometer at the University of Queensland’s Experimental Mine to verify its accuracy and suitability for measuring pressure differences between underground survey stations.It is expected that the instrument’s low cost will pave the way for barometric pressure surveys to become more commonly used in mines. In turn, the resulting improvement in knowledge of major underground pressure losses should allow mine ventilation officers and engineers to optimise their ventilation systems and potentially reduce overall operating costs.An alternative option would be to use a barometer-equipped smartphone as a survey instrument, provided that its inbuilt barometer module is sufficiently accurate.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2015.
