Northparkes Mines is located 27 km northwest of Parkes in central west New South Wales. The E26 deposit is the largest of all defined to-date in the area, containing over 50 per cent of Northparkes' resources and reserves. The combination of orebody geometry and geotechnical characteristics provide ideal conditions for the block cave method of mining of the first lift of the E26 deposit. Although this method of underground mining has been used for decades in other countries, E26 is the first example of its use in Australia. Copper-gold mineralisation at Northparkes is related to quartz monzonite porphyries that have intruded coeval Ordovician volcanics. Sulphide mineralisation (dominantly bornite and chalcopyrite) occurs principally within quartz veins associated with the porphyry intrusions. Veining and mineralisation occurs within both the porphyries and volcanics. To optimise the recovery of a resource within a block cave mine, a good understanding of the rock mass and ore flow characteristics is essential. These have a significant effect on the fragmentation size and range and on parameters such as the drawzone spacing, height of interaction zone and dilution entry. As ore within a cave column moves and mixes when material is extracted from below and beside it, the total reserve extracted is unique for a particular draw strategy/production history. Until recently, reserve estimates and production schedules were based on the application of a uniform dilution factor to the tabulated resource. However, given the complicated flow and mixing within the cave column, such a simplistic approach can produce erroneous results. Northparkes Mines purchased and sponsored the upgrading of a commercially available software package specifically developed for modelling removal of resource blocks under caving conditions. This Gemcom software package, PC-BC, has been used for mine planning, reserve reporting and production scheduling. Blocks within it resource block model are converted into a mineable reserve taking into account mixing and dilution during depletion of drawcolumns (by horizontal and vertical redistribution of insitu tonnage and metal). As PC-BC gives individual drawpoint reserves, it can be used during the planning stage to determine whether or not a drawpoint is economic. For E26 Lift I an optimal layout containing 130 drawpoints has been developed based on a nominal 14 m x 14 m drawpoint spacing and a 0.8 per cent equivalent copper (eCu) cut-off grade. Annual production schedules for the depletion of material above this layout are based on: I higher tonnage removal from higher grade drawpoints in the early years of production; and 2 drawpoint production rates proportional to the total tonnage of orr remaining in the drawcolumn up to the optimal height of draw tier subsequent years. The reserve is tabulated from the combined annual production schedules over the life of the lift. The pre-mining reserve for Lift I of E26 is 26.6 Mt at 1.43 per cent copper and 0.39 g/t gold, of which approximately 23.4 Mt will be extracted under caving conditions. By scaling down the annual production schedule, weekly drawpoint tonnage calls can be given for short-tern production scheduling.

Grade control is a process of maximising value and reducing risk, through the delivery of quality tonnes to the mill via the accurate definition of ore and waste. It essentially comprises data collection, integration and interpretation; local resource estimation; stope design; supervision of mining and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of geological understanding led by high-quality mapping and sampling to drive appropriate estimation strategies and mining. Gold veins show various complex features relating to erratic grade distribution (nugget effect), variable geometry and internal architecture. These include variations in dip, strike and width, late-stage faulting/shearing effects and geometallurgy. Such variations generally require close geological understanding to ensure optimum grade, minimal dilution and maximum mining recovery. A well designed grade control program will prove to management and stakeholders that by applying geological knowledge, the mining process can be more efficient and cost effective. This paper reviews the issues of grade control in underground gold mines and focuses on integrated mapping and sampling through three case studies.

The ever increasing trend of the gold price has meant that ore deposits that were previously considered too complex, or unattractive by virtue of their low gold grade, are now being investigated more closely. These ore deposits present a greater risk of failure than previously was the case. To ensure that the risk of project failure is reduced and the maximum value is derived from the deposit, its mineralogy, as well as other characteristics, should be well understood such that the optimum process can be designed.Quite often the flow sheet design is assembled using individual process components, from various sources, and without consideration of the complete system. Test work programs require careful planning and an open viewpoint in terms of comminution circuit design particularly with respect to ever increasing power costs across the globe. As an example, high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology in many cases offers better mineral liberation than the more traditional comminution devices and it does so at a reduced energy input, and yet HPGR test work is often restricted in its scope due to the perceived novelty of the technology and the resultant lack of generally agreed and accepted test work routes.In this paper the authors outline a typical HPGR test work process route driven by the needs of different ore types and illustrate that to optimise the project value, any test work program should start from the premise that thorough understanding of the ore is vital.CITATION:Bookless, T, Meadows, D and Pownell, J, 2013. The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

"Determining the deportment of economic and environmentally significant elements in sulfidic mine materials (eg ore, gangue and waste) requires the use of advanced microanalytical techniques, including electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Sulfidic boulders were sampled from an acid rock drainage impacted ephemeral stream adjacent to historical copper-silver workings at Baal Gammon, northern Queensland. The abundance and deportment of a range of trace elements and precious metals were analysed in these samples. Whilst many of these elements represent a potential environmental risk if leached from sulfidic rocks into streams in the surficial environment, significantly some of these elements (eg In, Sb and Co) represent specialised metals that are currently considered to be in critical supply.Sulfidic waste rock material at Baal Gammon is dominated by chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. Microanalytical investigations revealed that chalcopyrite contains significant quantities of In, Sn, Ag and Zn either substituted directly into the crystal lattice or occurring as discrete sphalerite and stannite inclusions. Arsenopyrite, which may comprise more than 50 per cent of some boulders, is notably enriched in Sb, Co and Ni but also contains inclusions of sphalerite, chalcopyrite and stannite. In contrast, pyrrhotite contains no trace elements of economic significance, but instead represents a likely contributor to acid generation during oxidation in the surficial environment. Trace metals (eg In, Sb, Co, Ni, Zn) are liberated during sulfide oxidation of these boulders in the surficial environment, generating a metal-rich, low-pH leachate.Fe-oxides precipitated as rinds on the surface of these boulders under low pH conditions also contain abundant As, Bi, Sn, Cu and Zn. Abandoned or historical mines represent potential sources of metalliferous drainage that poses potential environmental risks to water and habitats. However, sulfide-rich historical waste rock, stockpiles and processed waste (eg tailings) at abandoned mines may also represent significant sources of critical (eg indium) or other significant metals (eg Sn) that if liberated economically could improve environmental conditions in and around abandoned and historical mines.CITATION:Fox, N, Parbhakar-Fox, A and Lottermoser, B G, 2016. The design work undertaken by Rock Mechanics Technology (now part of Golder Associates (Golder)) has played a major part in successfully establishing mechanised room and pillar working in Indian coalmines, both for the development of new districts and for the re-establishment of old districts prior to pillar extraction on panel retreat.Golder has used appropriate design of pillars, extraction sequences and final snook sizes to minimise ground control risks during pillar extraction. Where the strata will not cave reliably, partial extraction systems leaving either a crush pillar or a substantial yield pillar have been adopted.Remote monitoring of selected pillars during the extraction process using stress cells, extensometry and convergence measurements provides confirmation of pillar behaviour and verification of designs.A new telltale device, giving a visible warning of impending caving, is now installed at all Indian pillar extraction sites and is proving very successful.CITATION:MacAndrew, K M, Garcia, A S and Gregson, I D, 2014. The Resource Management Act has been in force now for approximately ten months. This Act, and the Crown Minerals Act which accompanied it, have substantially changed the manner by which mining operations and other resource uses obtain access to resources and are subject to controls of their environmental effects. This paper briefly summarises the key elements of the regulatory provisions of the Resource Management Act. It identifies the types of resource consents required, and discusses these and procedural matters in relation to mining in Otago. It addresses the transitional provisions and highlights inconsistencies and difficulties in the implementation of these provisions. This paper identifies potential future developments in the planning and regulatory environment relating to mining in Otago.

In April 2000 Mount Isa Mines installed hoist ropes of a new design on the double-drum winder at their P49 shaft. The ropes, CASAR Duroplast, were about three times as expensive as the previously used triangular strand ropes. The P49 shaft is situated at Mount Isa MinesÆ George Fisher Mine, located some 30 km north of Mt Isa. This shaft used the tried and proven 6 x 33 triangular strand style ropes. The rope life attained by these ropes at the time was acceptable due to many years of satisfactory performance. The following study indicates the improvement of service life using CASAR Duroplast rope in P 49 shaft, which depends on shaft and winder parameters of that particular shaft and cannot necessarily be generalised to other shafts.

Various analysis techniques are used to determine the nature of a large seismic event that was triggered by a mass blast in an underground mine. This event was recorded by surface accelerometer arrays whose output was doubly integrated using a stable filter to determine the dynamic displacements. The peak dynamic displacements during the blast were 0.09 mm, and during its latter stages, this blast induced a seismic event having a peak dynamic displacement more than ten times larger at 1.26 mm. Polarisation analysis, based on the complex covariance matrix, showed that the seismic event was caused by movement of a known underground fault, close to the blast, which radiated most of its release motion as a shear-horizontal (SH) wave. The change in frequency content with time for the blast and seismic event was initially determined using the Fourier-based reassigned S-method. This analysis showed that the large amplitude seismic event had frequency content significantly lower than that of the blast. Nevertheless, this Fourier technique still retains the problems associated with short time windows as well as the fact that most realistic signals are non-stationary. In order to eliminate such influences, the more recently developed empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was used to obtain the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) of the seismic wave propagation. The EMD vibration analysis showed that each IMF generally exhibited distinct frequency changes throughout the blast and a significant reduction in frequency throughout the subsequent event. It is shown that most of the energy of the seismic event is contained in IMF modes 2, 3 and 4 of the SH wave; the high-frequency first mode (IMF1) contains little energy. The Crown Minerals Act provides a new+framework for the management of Crown owned minerals and requires that regard be had for the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. The Act requires the preparation of Minerals Programmes to achieve the Act's objectives of efficient allocation of rights and the recovery of a fair financial return on its minerals. Efficient allocation requires that a permit is allocated to the party which values it most highly. A fair financial return to the Crown must be considered in the context of the economic rent available from individual mineral projects, with the proviso that a nil return to the Crown as the owner of the resource will not be considered a fair return from the community's perspective.

Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is the primary global source of titaniumdioxide which is commonly used as a whitening agent in papermanufacture and a pigment in paint manufacture. In WesternAustralia ilmenite is processed by the Becher process (Becher,1963, Becher et al, 1965) where ilmenite particles are feddirectly into the furnace with coal and heated to form acomposite of elemental iron and TiO2. The mechanism of thecarbothermic reduction of ilmenite has been extensively studied(Grey, Jones and Reid, 1973; Jones, 1973; Grey and Reid, 1974;El-Tawil, Morse and Francis, 1993) and is reasonably wellaccepted.

Oil can enter a flotation circuit from a number of sources (for example, from mining equipment, oil leaks from the grinding equipment and coatings on the grinding media, but to name a few). Folklore generally states that any oil that contaminates the ore entering the flotation circuit is considered to have a negative impact on flotation. That is, a loss in concentrate grade and recovery.This represents a dilemma for some grinding media suppliers, who use a variety of quenching medium (air, polymer, oil or water) to achieve the desired physical properties of the ball. In the case of high chrome grinding media it is necessary, in some instances, to quench in oil to give the ball the right degree of toughness, which invariably leads to these balls having a thin film of oil on their surface. Once the grinding media arrives on site and site personnel recognise that the balls are “covered” in oil, they generally insist that the oil will have a deleterious impact on flotation performance.Obviously, any supplier “worth their salt” would take remedial action at the point of manufacture to minimise this problem. However, does quenching oil actually present a significant “threat” to the flotation process? This paper provides both laboratory and plant data describing the effect quenching oil has on the flotation of copper sulphide ore, with surprising results!

"Unconventional gas resources, including coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs, can be located above and below aquifers that provide groundwater for agricultural, industrial, urban and other uses. Development of these resources may, therefore, lead to potential impacts on groundwater supply.Management of reservoir/aquifer interconnections necessitates a program of focused data acquisition. For example, groundwater transfer from shallow aquifers to underlying CSG reservoirs may occur where CSG-containing units subcrop beneath shallow aquifers, possibly at significant distances from operating wells.Arrow Energy is undertaking studies of connectivity between aquifers including an investigation in collaboration with the Queensland Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment to evaluate connectivity between the Condamine Alluvium (CA) and CSG-containing Walloon Coal Measures (WCM).The Condamine Valley hosts highly productive agricultural land with groundwater resources heavily utilised for irrigation. Water demand outstrips available supply and groundwater has been subject to restrictions on further development since the early 1970s. Developments that could have an additional impact on groundwater resources in the CA are of major concern to local landholders. This paper describes: planned field investigations at two sites: 1. Stratheden, where pumping from the WCM will be undertaken 2. The iron ore mining district of Labrador West and adjacent Quebec is Canada's largest iron ore producer with almost 50 years of production. The area is currently experiencing a period of renewed activity not seen in decades that includes new mine development, mine expansion and exploration for new iron ore resources. All of the past and present production and exploration programs in the district are centred on the Lower Proterozoic Superior-type iron formations of the Knob Lake Group, located within the Grenville tectonic province of the Canadian Shield. The Knob Lake Group is a continental margin sedimentary sequence which was deformed and subjected to greenschist to upper amphibolite facies metamorphism during the Grenville orogeny. Regional deformation and metamorphism plays a key role in making the iron formation of the Knob Lake Group economic. The distribution of orebodies in the district is controlled by superimposed F1/F2 synclines which causes thickening of the iron formation through repetition. Ore mineralogy consists of specular haematite, magnetite and locally martite with quartz as the major gangue mineral. Regional metamorphism has caused an increase in grain size of the ore minerals making it more amenable to concentrating and pelletising. Altius has been active in Labrador West since 2003 and is now the second largest licence holder in the district with several iron ore exploration projects. The Kamistiatusset project is located in the heart of the region's transportation, power and mining infrastructure. The property has seen limited previous exploration, but covers several significant iron ore prospects. Work by Altius includes a helicopter-borne magnetic survey, ground magnetic and gravity surveys, geological mapping, sampling and 6000 m of diamond core drilling all of which confirm both a favourable geologic setting and ore mineralogy.

Energy costs are steadily increasing worldwide while the availability and quality of water are becoming contentious issues between the users (municipalities/households, agriculture, manufacturing and mining). Refractory gold ore treatment - pressure oxidation, biological oxidation and roasting (ultra-fine grinding, or UFG, will not be discussed here as this process only reduces the particle size of the feed prior to cyanidation) - requires substantially more energy and water quantity and quality are vastly different compared to the standard and simple flow sheets used for treating non-refractory ores This paper will provide an overview of the energy and water requirements for treating refractory gold ores, a topic which does not appear to have been considered previously in the literature.CITATION:Roberto, F, Snyder, J, Dodd, J and Dunne, R, 2013. Porgera mine is 95 per cent owned by Barrick Gold Corporation. It is located at an altitude of 2200–2700 m above sea level in the Enga province of Papua New Guinea and produces approximately 460 000 oz per annum with a proven and probable reserve of 6.2 Moz. The refractory ore is ground in a conventional semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuit. After the gravity gold is recovered, the slurry is floated, oxidised in the autoclaves and then leached. This paper will focus on the flotation circuit and the recent upgrade of the control system. The five interdependent flotation circuits were challenging for operations to control as they dealt with variable grade, throughput and circulating loads, as well as the physical limitations of the equipment. With the installation of 18 Portage Froth Characterization® (PFC) cameras, the plant’s operation has been converted from a level-control based strategy that was focused on individual cells to one that targets grade and recovery control across the entire circuit. Variability in feed and the corresponding launder issues were addressed with a unique site initiative of deflector plates to indicate filling level. Non-linear closed loop control was implemented directly in the DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) using Portage Advantage Regulatory Control (PARC) algorithms and optimised with AwaRE advanced controllers. The most noticeable benefits achieved with the upgrade include improved flotation gold recovery, consistent flotation sulfur grade and autoclave performance. A major challenge for closure planning at mining operations below the water table is evaporation from final void pit lakes and concentration of salts, which can impact on downstream groundwater (and surface water) flows and quality. Where such impacts are deemed unacceptable, the closure approach that is often adopted is to infill the final voids with waste rock to above the pre-mining water table to prevent the development of a pit lake and subsequent evaporative losses. BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Marillana Creek (Yandi) mining operations face these issues. The orebody is a channel iron deposit that forms the major aquifer in the region, which will be completely mined as a series of elongated open pits over tens of kilometres. The major constraint on mine closure planning was the stripping ratio of less than one, which means that there is insufficient waste rock to infill all areas to the pre-mining water table. Hydrogeological investigations and groundwater modelling indicated that standard mine closure approaches would result in pit void lakes becoming saline sinks unless the residual void geometry was optimised to minimise evaporation and maximise throughflow. The solution developed is a cost-effective long-term mine plan that meets all mine closure objectives, and involved:the selective infilling of all pits, largely using run-of-mine waste dumping with limited re-handling; the diversion of the major part of up-catchment creek flows around the mining operations to allow mining of the resource under Marillana Creek crossings, which in turn restricted overall aquifer recharge and reduced the elevation of the long-term water table; the diversion of some minor creek tributary flows into specific locations within the mine path to induce hydraulic gradients to maintain groundwater throughflow and water quality; and close integration of mine plan optimisation (mining and waste dumping schedules) with groundwater modelling scenarios to achieve acceptable environmental outcomes. This approach is designed to result in no reduction in downstream surface water flows or quality, maintenance of adequate downstream groundwater throughflow to support groundwater dependent ecosystems, and no reduction in the beneficial use status of the downstream groundwater resource.

As the title indicates the central themes discussed in this contribution are sustainable development, information systems, and extractive industry. More specifically, the objective is to present a prototype for the systematic generation of extractive industry (henceforth: EI) û specific sustainability information. The paper begins with the authorÆs viewpoints on the core notions of sustainability, and development, as well as their relationship to information. These set the stage for the introduction of the information system (IS), as well as the follow-up sustainability information system (SIS) extractive industry sustainability information system (EISIS) concepts and related discussions. The paper continues with a second part, in which, efforts to research and develop an EISIS prototype are described. First, the team is presented. Second, the systemÆs aim and target groups are briefly discussed. After, an articulated overarching EISIS conceptual model emphasising capital accumulation, and service flow concepts û is presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the assembled prototype with a focus on data and information generation. The formulation of data generation, storage and transmission processes, as well as its use in sustainability interpretation rules and their embedment in the conceptual model is made with respect to monetised stock and flow parameters, measured in the appropriate dimensions. In the third part, the author presents and discusses the results of a first round of prototype experimental development in three major EI firms. First, the system observation, and data analysis protocols are described. Second, a review of protocol implementation, and respective results, is made. Finally, the overall performance of the proposed prototype, and development process issues are discussed, before suggesting areas for improvement and future research. Fosterville Gold Mine is an underground operation located approximately 20 km northeast of Bendigo and 170 km north of Melbourne. Fosterville is the most productive gold mine in Victoria, producing over 100 000 ounces of gold annually. Access to the underground is via two portals cut into previously mined open pits. Fosterville is 100 per cent owned and operated by Northgate Minerals, a gold and copper producer with mining operations, development projects and exploration properties in Canada and Australia. (Northgate Minerals Corporation, 2010).Underground operations commenced in 2006 with ore production focused on three orebodies – Phoenix, Ellesmere and Falcon. Primary ventilation to the existing operation is provided by wall mounted exhaust fans located underground. This system provides approximately 220 m3/s of primary ventilation to the operations with intake achieved through the portals. Exploration drilling during recent times has uncovered another lode, the Harrier orebody, located 2.2 km to the south of the existing workings. Due to the location of the new Harrier orebody, vent analysis revealed the requirement for a separate source of primary ventilation to service Harrier. Figure 1 shows a current underground long section and the location of Harrier in relation to the existing workings. A number of options were considered, including a parallel decline from one of the existing two portals, however, a 4 m diameter, 350 m deep surface ventilation shaft was selected as the most suitable and feasible option for the mine.In December 2009, geotechnical drilling commenced to determine the most suitable location for the shaft. Site locations were constrained by a number of factors including interaction with current and planned surface infrastructure as well as proximity to nearby community members at the southern end of the mining lease. Results from the geotechnical drilling indicated that the majority of the proposed shaft would be suitable for a 4 m raise bored shaft. However, the top 40 m of the proposed shaft were deemed unsuitable for raiseboring due to zones of weakness that would likely influence the stability of a 4 m diameter shaft (Robinson, 2010). Following independent geotechnical advice and input from experienced raiseboring contractors, it was decided to construct a 40 m presink prior to raiseboring activities.A crane mounted auger was chosen as the preferred method to construct the presink. This method differs substantially from traditional blind sinking methods which are highly labour intensive. The auger, or drill, is designed and built to be attached to a crane base using engineered pivoting cradles. The auger is suspended from the crane jib by pennant ropes attached to hydraulic rams. The auger applies rotation and axial loads to the drilling tools via a telescopic steel bar (Kelly Bar). Drill tools are attached to the bottom of the Kelly Bar and comprise an assortment of drilling buckets and reaming barrels. Drilling buckets cut in situ material and collect the spoil for removal and are used for the excavation of the ‘pilot hole’. Reaming barrels are used to expand the diameter of the excavation by directing cuttings into the pilot hole which are then removed by the drilling bucket. In June 2010, the presink was constructed utilising a crane mounted auger with support to the shaft walls applied via a remote fibrecrete unit. The excavation method involved cutting a series of smaller diameter holes (2.4 m wide) before reaming out to the final diameter (4.7 m wide) in 4 - 5 m vertical increments. Fibrecreting activities were carried out on the backshifts, to ensure the stability of the excavation and minimise interaction between the two units. The presink was completed on time and offered many advantages compared to traditional blind sinking methods, including safety, costs and timing. This paper will examine the benefits of this method as well as lessons learnt and future applications in the mining industry.
