The effects of hydrogen on the properties of binary Ti-A1 alloys containing 2.5, 5, and 7 pct aluminum and ternary alloys of the same compositions with added interstitial elements oxygen, nihrogen, and carbon were stzdied. Aluminum increases the apparent hydrogen solubility of the a-phase, resulting in a marked increase in resistance to impact embrittlement. In the Ti-5Al and Ti-7Al alloys, for example, the addition of 180 and 305 ppm hydrogen, respectively, did not cause embrittlement, while unalloyed titanium was embrittled by as little as 75 ppm. The role of aluminum in increasing hydrogen solubility of the a-phase probably accounts for the excellent hydrogen tolerance of a-ß alloys containing considerable amounts of aluminum. There is some evidence that aluminum retards the rate of hydride precipitation. If so, these alloys may be susceptible to slow-strain embrittlement. UNALLOYED a-titanium is extremely sensitive to small amounts of added hydrogen in that there is a marked decrease in notch properties. For example, as little as 100 ppm hydrogen is sufficient to lower the room-temperature notch-impact strength from over 100 to less than 20 in.-lb.' SINCE the writer has been intimately connected with the development of manganese steel for many years, some remarks upon the early work with regard to the rolling and forging of this material might he of interest, and particularly as to the question of rails of special quality and of superior wearing qualities. In a paper on Iron Alloys, with Special Deference to Manganese Steel, read before this Institute at the International Engineering Congress in Chicago in 1893,1 the writer mentioned that, about 20 years ago, his firm in Sheffield produced railroad material, such as tires and axles, of forged and rolled manganese steel, thus showing that this product could be manipulated and worked up into the various required forms. The tires illustrated in the paper referred to above formed a particularly difficult class of work to produce in a special steel, but no special obstacles were met with Although there was no difficulty at that time in making and producing manganese steel in various forms, forged, rolled or pressed; nevertheless, on account of its higher expense, sufficient encouragement

EXPERIMENTAL work on the properties of high-purity alloys of the copper-manganese-zinc system has necessarily required extensive metallographic work to determine the equilibrium conditions in this system. Previous work on these alloys is fragmentary and, unfortunately, based on alloys made with impure grades of manganese, thus introducing significant amounts of iron, silicon, aluminum and carbon. Since these elements are known to affect equilibrium conditions, it became desirable to re-examine these alloys made from the pure metals. The alpha solid solution field was of particular interest and, therefore, was chosen for the initial work, which was outlined to determine the composition limits of this field. PREVIOUS WORK Heusler1 conducted an extensive survey of the liquid-solid regions of this system and also made an estimate of the solid-phase boundaries at 340°C. The pertinent part of his diagram is given in Fig. I, but it is of limited usefulness, since it applied to a single temperature only and is based on impure alloys under admittedly nonequilibrium conditions. Bauer and Hansen,2 likewise working with impure alloys, have determined the phase boundaries for alphabeta brasses containing small amounts of manganese and indicate an increase in the extent of the alpha field with increasing manganese. This is not in accordance with Heusler or with data obtained on pure alloys.3 They also described a third constituent precipitating in the alpha plus beta field below 350° to 400°C. but did not identify this constituent. Guillet4 and Heike and Ledibur5 have also noted this precipitate Each of these investigators recognized that impurities present in the manganese could and did have an effect on the structure and properties of their alloys. Corson6 in particular pointed out the hardening effects of silicon, aluminum, and carbon in copper-manganese alloys and Heusler reported that his alloys containing more than 25 per cent manganese were extremely brittle. In all probability this brittleness was due to the impurities present. This early work, therefore, should be taken as a general guide for preliminary studies only, and high-purity alloys may be expected to produce different results. The work of the Bureau of Mines laboratories with electrolytic manganese has been briefly summarized by Dean7 but includes only a short section on this system. Later work3 outlined a limited portion of the alpha field in the neighborhood of 65 per cent copper, 10 per cent manganese, and 25 per cent zinc. The present work was under-

MEIERAN and Richman' have proposed a method for the determination of electron-diffraction patterns from twinned bcc crystals. It is the purpose of this note to present a general method capable of predicting the positions of all reflections from both matrix and twin regions for all possible orientations of cubic crystals. The method has been verified for twinning in explosively deformed copper, and is found to be a very useful tool when used in conjunction with stereographic projection, and dark-field electron microscopy. Let an isometric crystal be twinned in any (hkl) plane. The twinning can be considered either as a reflection in the twin plane or as a 180-deg rotation about the twin axis. In reciprocal space, the 180-deg rotation about the twin axis would place a given point p, q, Y to a new position P, Q,R, such that both will be equally inclined to the twin axis. This is represented in Fig. 1. If the coordinates of three such pairs of points are determined, the matrix of the transformation can be obtained.' It is also seen that such pairs would satisfy another condition, i.e., the vector [p,q,r] plus the vector [P,Q,R] will yield a multiple of hkl, i.e., the indices of the twin plane, because in isometric systems the axis [hkl] is perpendicular to the plane (hkl). This can be simplified by taking the points along the three axes. If a point h2 + k2 + 12, 0, 0 is taken along the x axis, it is seen that its new indices should be so as to yield a sum 2h2, 2hk, 2hl,i.e., 2h(h,k,1). (Also the points h2 - k2 - 12, 2hk, 2h1, and h2 + k2 + 12, 0, 0 are equidistant from the origin and both points make equal angles with the twin axis, i.e., cos-' h/dh2 + k2 + l2.) Similar operations for the points yield respectively, after the 180-deg rotation about the twin axis. Following the method due to Buerger,' the matrix of the transformation is obtained as follows: Using this matrix the indices of any other point in reciprocal space can be determined. The chief use of scrapers at this mine has been on lead ore of milling grade, clean and dry, in stulled stopes, 50-100 ft. long, 5-12 ft. high, and pitching 20-30°. Scrapers have also been used to fill these stopes with waste. The first scraper used (Fig. 1) is modified from a Cleveland-Cliffs design, being only 30 in. wide. It is light, weighing but 95 lb., handles well, and-digs itself in; but it spills part of its load on a long haul. It is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony—stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities ; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. MOST students that plan to enter the mining profession attempt to obtain some kind of practical experience before graduation. Six or seven years ago it was an easy matter for undergraduates to find employment during the summer vacation and return to school in the fall filled with enthusiasm to dig deeper into the theoretical field. However, during the past few years it has become extremely difficult for an inexperienced undergraduate to obtain even a menial job in mining. This was the situation which presented itself to the author and his partner, T. M. Patten several months before school closed in May, 1934. At that time, Mr. Patten's training consisted of two years study in Mining, and mine included three years' study in Mining Geology at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. With this technical training and no practical experience, we conceived the idea that custom assaying in some of the western mining districts should be a lucrative business. We thought that the renewed interest in prospecting for gold and the opening of new mines should provide more assay work, and believed that we might secure it if we were on the spot where the assaying was needed. We realized that it would be out of the question for us to obtain the necessary equipment with which to establish an assay office. Even if such an office were established we had a maximum of but three months during which to operate. So we determined to build some kind of inexpensive equipment that could be placed in an automobile, or trailer, and be moved from one camp to another. We then began to study the theoretical aspects of assaying and started experimental work with the equipment that we proposed to build.

The principal causes of unstable boreholes* have been known for many years. For example, in a paper published in 1938, Halbouty and Kaldenbachl listed nearly all the classes of troublesome shales that we know today. Much progress has been made since then, but we still have difficulty in identifying the cause of hole problems and consequently in selecting the right technique for combatting them. This subject was discussed at length by Kelly2 in a recent paper and much valuable information was provided. In the Shell Laboratory it was felt that there was a need for a better understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying the various forms of hole instability, and accordingly, a study was undertaken. This entailed reviewing the physics and chemistry of shales, developing tests for characterizing shales, and constructing a model to study borehole stability. Full simulation of underground conditions was not attempted; for example, we used reconstituted shale specimens, and often simple solutions or suspensions rather than practical drilling muds. Such procedures are necessary in order to establish mechanisms, but caution must be exercised in applying the results to the more complex conditions in the field. Part I — Compaction Swelling and Dispersion of Shales Compaction of Sediments Shales are formed by the compaction of sediments. Water is expressed as sediments are buried by subsequent layers, and the degree of compaction is proportional to the depth of burial, provided the water is able to escape easily to permeable formations. The younger sediments, when recovered at the surface, soften and disperse when mixed with water; the older shales have undergone diagenesis (alteration of the clay minerals, secondary cementation, etc.), and remain hard and unaffected by water. In this paper we shall apply the term "shale", as the drilling engineer does, to everything from clays, which are highly reactive to water, to completely lithified materials such as claystones and slates, which are completely inert. However, because these materials behave quite differently when encountered in the drilling well, it is desirable to develop a simple means of characterizing them. The feature that distinguishes the various shales is their dispersibility in water —soft clays disperse readily, harder shales disperse slowly when agitated, the lithified materials will not disperse at all unless milled. In the dispersibility test used in our study, a weighed amount of dry shale particles in the 12-to-100-mesh-size range was placed in a tube filled with distilled water and allowed to soak for 16 hours. The following record of the important responsibilities already shouldered by Dr. Ricketts will give some indication of the trust and confidence reposed in him by his colleagues. The Institute is to be congratulated that a man who is already so much engaged should be willing to assume the further responsibility of guiding the Institute's Ship of state during the ensuing year. Louis Davidson Ricketts, who is brother of Professor Palmer or Chamberlaine Ricketts, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was born at Elkton, Md., Dec. 19. 1859, was graduated from Princeton University in 1881 with the degree, Bachelor of Science, chosen a Fellow in Chemistry and W. S. Ward Fellow in Economic Geology, and after two years' study given the degree Doctor of Science. Following the completion of Iris work at Princeton, Dr. Ricketts went to Colorado and started to work as a mine surveyor. For the 15 years following, his time was chiefly occupied in reconnaissance work, geological work and mine examination. From 1887 to 1890 Dr. Ricketts was Geologist for Wyoming, and at, the end of that period transferred his operations to the Southwest. where he has since been steadily engaged in large mining projects. He was identified with the acquisition of the property now owned by the Moctezuma Copper Co., a , subsidiary of Phelps, Dodge & Co., at Nacozari, Sonora, Mex. From 1899 to 1901 he was General Manager of the property and during his administration the concentrator and reduction works were completed and the mines put on a dividend-paying basis

Everyone in the coal industry from top management to the preparation engineer is vitally interterested in recovering as much salable coal as possible from the run-of-mine product. Coal losses from a preparation plant occur in the solid refuse material being discharged from the plant and in the bleed-off slurry from the water circuit. The refuse is generally hauled from the plant in solid form by trucks, conveyors, or aerial trams to the refuse or culm banks or it may be crushed and transported by hydraulic methods to refuse ponds or dams. The loss of coal in refuse material and the extent of this problem has been covered in another paver.' The loss of salable coal in the plant bleed-off slurry is one of the water circuit problems in coal preparation plants. Slurries originate at various places in the processing circuits and are usually disposed of by transportation to waste ponds known as slurry ponds. Even though the combustible material discharged as slurry and refuse from the plant is labeled a loss, the loss must only be considered temporary. There is a tendency at the present time to examine refuse and slurry losses and to reprocess these materials to recover valuable coal. Slurries from eight bituminous coal preparation plants in central and western Pennsylvania have been sampled and examined to determine the amount of recoverable coal in each. Examinations of the samples were made to determine the tons per hour of solids and the gallons per minute of water in the slurry; the size, ash, and sulfur analyses of the solids; and the sink-float characteristics of the larger solids. The extreme fines (—325 mesh material) from one of the samples has been examined further to determine the micron size fractions as well as the ash and sulfur content of the micron sizes. Collection of the Samples: Field trips were made to each of the plants where samples were obtained and discussions held with the preparation engineer prior to sampling. The flowsheet of the plant operation was studied and a time-period selected to obtain a representative sample. At least 20 1-gal samples of total plant bleed-off suspensions were collected at each plant in increments over designated periods belived to be typical of the plant flow Three of the samples were obtained from plants in the Pittsburgh area. Each plant supplied information on the capacity, operating time, type of cleaning equipment used, water and material balances, and auxiliary equipment. From the time required to collect given amounts of slurry and from the amount of solids in the slurry, total solids discharges from the plant were calculated and compared with the plant flow. Ash and sulfur analyses of the total solids were also checked, at some plants, with company figures. In all cases where checks could be made there was reasonable agreement between company figures and those reported here. Analysis of the Slurries: Representative fractions of properly agitated samples were examined in the laboratory to determine the specific gravities of the slurries. The solids and water were separated by filtration to check the weight of each so that the percent of solids in the pulp could be determined. From the resulting data, presented in Table I, it may be seen that the percent solids in the slurries ranges from 2.8 to 39.0 and the amount of solids from 2.61 to 45.61 tph. Size Analysis of Solids: Representative fractions of the slurries were permitted to settle and the clear water was removed by siphoning. The solids were then wet-screened at 28, 35, 48, 65, 100, 150, 200 and 325 mesh. Results of the size analyses are presented in Table 11. These results indicate the extreme variation of sizes and in most cases the degree of fineness of the solids. The amount of —325 mesh ranges from 22.5 to 84.5 pct and the amount of+200 mesh from 8.3 to 69.1 pct.

IN addition to its base-metal and coal mining operations, the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has, for the past quarter century, been one of the few large American mining companies interested in dredging. Its activities in this field are confined to gold, and to Alaska, but it is the largest operator in that territory, with twelve huge dredges available to work during the summer on the frozen ancient beach sands at Nome and the gravels of Fairbanks. These operations will be described separately.

HOT pressing of powder particles has gained importance recently, since it affords a method in which high densities are rapidly attained. In a recent study on hot pressing of alumina powders, Mangsen, Lam-bertson, and Best1 have shown within the limits of their experiment, the validity the rate equation for densification in hot pressing, originally proposed by Murray, Livey, and Williams.2 i.e., where D = fraction of theoretical density, t = time, P = pressure and 77 is the viscosity, all in appropriate units. This equation was derived from earlier work of Shuttleworth and Mackenzie3 which is based on the closing of spherical pores under the action of surface tension. The integrated form of this equation yields a straight-line relation between log (1 - D) and t. Such conditions were found by Felten4 to be true only after extended periods of pressing. The application of hydraulic concentration to large scale operations has been effectively accomplished by the use of the SiphonSizer. Operation has been simple, automatic and essentially trouble free. The use of the primary desliming SiphonSizer on magnetic taconites has shown an improvement in grade of concentrate and an increase in recovery over conventional hydroseparators. Magnetic concentrates have been further deslimed and upgraded in SiphonSizers by floating a coarse middling product away from the heavier concentrate. The application of the Siphon-sizer to closed circuit grinding has met with only partial success to date. Hydraulic concentration of minerals has been practiced for a good many years. Until recently, however, the practice has been limited to equipment using a multiplicity of small pockets and relatively low tonnages and flows. The adaptation of the SiphonSizer to the concentration and classification of magnetite has changed this concept. Some fifty commercial units varying in size from a 16-ft diam circular unit to a 25x100-ft rectangular unit are currently in operation on magnetic taconites. Additional units up to 38 ft diam are under construction. Depending upon the application in the flowsheet, upgrading varies from 0.75% to 14% Fe in a single stage. To those not familiar with taconite processing, the importance of the struggle to remove economically as much silica as possible may not be fully appreciated. Perhaps some figures pertaining to transportation costs will underscore this important process. If the silica content of the concentrate from a 10,000,000 ton per year plant could be reduced by I%, a savings in boat freight, at $2.00 per ton, would amount to $200,000 annually! THE SlPHONSlZER The SiphonSizer, as illustrated in Figs. lA, 1B and 2, is a hydraulic classifier in which the hydraulic water is distributed uniformly across the bottom of the vessel by means of a system of headers (1 and 2), jet pipes (3), and nozzles (4). The depth of the teeter bed is automatically maintained by the siphon-float assembly. The feed is introduced through a feed well (5) and separated into two fractions by the effects of rising water and the density of the teetered bed. The magnetite fraction is discharged by the siphon (12) while the fine slime and light middling overflow a peripheral weir (9) to the overflow launder (6). The bed depth is controlled automatically by float valves (7), which are responsive to changes in the height of clear water supported in the superelevation tubes (8) by the density of the teetered bed. Born, March 28, 1853 Died July 23, 1916 On July 25, 1916, the Board of Directors adopted the following minute and directed that it be entered upon the records of the Board & published in the Bulletin of the Institute, and thereof be sent to the family of Mr. Kirchhoff: Charles Kirchhoff was one of the oldest, most widely known and most highly esteerned members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. On his return in 1875 from a European course of study, to begin a highly successful professional career, he joined the Institute, then just commencing to acquire both national and international recognition. He became at once, and-for more than 40 years continued to be, its earnest , and active supporter, serving it as Manager, Councilor or Director for terms aggregating 9 years,-as Vice-President for 2 years, and twice as President for a year. During the critical period of the erection of the United Engineering Society's building, and the transfer of the Institute to permanent head-quarters therein, Mr. Kirchhoff was its efficient representative in the United Engineering Society, and on the Building Committee. In 1910, amid the congratulations of colleagues, employees, and innumerable friends, Mr. Kirchhoff retired from active business as Vice- President and General Manager of a great technical publishing company. Yet he sacrificed of his well-earned leisure yet one more year, to serve the Institute as President through 1911.

Billions of tons of bulk solid materials are processed through our industrial plants each year, and the tonnage is steadily rising. It has been estimated that for every dollar spent in industry as a whole, approxinlately 30 cents is consumed in the handling of bulk solid materials. It is in this category that tremendous savings are possible through the use of improved techniques. Since World War 11, the mining, steel, chemical, and grain industries, among others have made use of increased materials-handling automation in order to gain some of these savings. However, in a chain of automatic operations, every link must be completely reliable, for if there is a single failure, the whole system immediately becomes ineffective. Only too often the weak link in the chain proves to be the flow of bulk solids from bins. To contribute to the fundamental knowledge in this area, a research study has been continuing at The Ohio State University. The principal objective of the investigation has been to study the internal stresses existing in confined bulk solids. LITERATURE SURVEY Literature studies have revealed that many outstanding people have made contributions to the field of bulk solids. For instance, C. F. Jenkin,1 suggested: a. The pressure on a bin wall is not directly proportional to the depth beneath the surface of material in the bin. b. The vertical pressure distribution on the base of a bin is not actually uniform but is a variable. c. Arches form in bins as a result of very small deformations of the material in the bin. This deformation causes a series of gaps to appear, and consequently causes the disappearance of diagonal forces that cannot act across these gaps. The removal of the diagonal forces causes horizontal forces to be introduced which seem to be the chief cause of arching. 11. A. Janssen,4 in 1895 in connection with his experiments on bins, derived a differential equation to describe both the lateral and vertical pressure in bins with vertical sides. This represents a significant contribution to bulk solid theory, and thus its solution is reproduced as follows: L = KV = RW/U' [l-e -U'KY/R] I where L is the lateral pressure of the bulk solid in psf., V is the vertical pressure of the bulk solid in psf., K is the ratio of the lateral pressure to the vertical pressure at any point, R is the hydraulic radius of the bin in feet, W is the density of the bulk solid in lbs. per cubic feet, U' is the coefficient of friction between the stored material and the bin wall, and Y is the head of material above the point in question in feet. In 1903, Jamieson,6 in an elaborate series of experiments on full sized bins measured vertical and lateral pressures by hydraulic diaphragms. He determined many values for mediums of corn, wheat, peas, and flaxseed. In 1951, Caughey, Tooles, and scheer3 measured both lateral and vertical pressure in deep bins by using strain guages on steel bands. There are many methods for determining the meridian, but all of those in common use involve at least two separate observations, one for latitude and one for azimuth. Such observations made upon a south star at any hour are open to the objection of possible inaccuracy due to ignorance of the absolute refraction, and also to slow change in the altitude of the star when near the meridian. The method of observing a circum-polar star at elongation. besides requiring a separate observation for latitude, is open to the serious objection that clouds may obscure the star at the critical moment. Moreover, a tedious wait for the star to come to elongation is sometimes necessary. Many of us can recall 'long, cold, weary vigils, waiting for Polaris to reach elongation. For observing a circumpolar star at any hour, not only the latitude, but also the true time, must be known. This it is practically impossible to obtain, except in regions reached by the telegraph, and usually then one has to know the longitude also, in order to reduce " standard time" to " local time." The results obtained by this method, when the star is at culmination, are not very good, unless the true local time is absolutely known. The methods of obtaining the nleridian from the sun, by means of a solar attachment, or by direct observation, while good, are not absolute, by reason of refraction, change in declination of the sun, and small change in vertical angle, when the sun is near the meridian. For these two methods, latitude, time, and approximate longitude have to be known. In the method here described, only one observation is needed, and from it are computed azimuth, latitude, aud sidereal time. In other words, one call observe a circumpolar star—Polaris
