As can be seen from the phase diagram A1-W1 the equilibrium solubility of tungsten in aluminum is practically nil at room temperature. By quenching from the liquid state (50,000°C per sec), Varic, Burov, and Kolesnicenko2 obtained A1-W solid solutions up to 0.15 at. pct W. The quenched alloys were in the form of foils, 0.2 to 0.3 mm thick. Considering the results of Duwez and Willens,3 it is obvious that this thickness, which makes impossible a sufficiently rapid quenching, was the main reason for the relatively low content of tungsten dissolved in aluminum found by varic.2 he present note shows that the metastable solubility of tungsten in aluminum can be appreciably extended in aluminum-rich A1-W alloys. The quenching technique and the procedure employed for the preparation of the alloys have been described previously.475 The resulting quenched flakes varied in thickness from 1 to 20 µm from experiment to experiment. However, the measurements of the lattice parameters were carried out only with flakes thinner than 5 µm. The areas of quenched flakes were between 0.1 and 15 mm2. The quenched flakes were placed into a 0.3-mm glass capillary tube which was then mounted in a 114.6-mm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera. Straumanis asymmetric film position and nickel-filtered CuKa radiation were used. The lattice spacings were computed taking X(CuKa1) = 1.54050A for resolved and ?(CuKa) = 1.54178A for unresolved doublets. All specimens were rotated at room temperature, 26o +2°C. The lattice parameters were estimated from extrapolation against the Nelson-Riley function. It was estimated that the error in the lattice parameter of the measurements on a single film lies within +0.0004A for lower and about +0.001A for higher concentrations of tungsten. The lattice parameters of the metastable solid solutions A1-W are plotted vs the concentration of tungsten in Fig. 1 together with the parameters measured by previous investigators.' Each point of the present measurements represents a determination of the lattice spacing on different quenched flakes, for a given concentration of tungsten. With experimental accuracy, the lattice parameters of the metastable solid solutions fall on the straight line passing through the already known data.' As estimated from the uncertainties in the lattice spacings of the solid solutions, the alloys were homogeneous within 0.1 at. pct W. The solubility of tungsten in aluminum-rich A1-W solid solutions obtained by a very rapid quenching technique is increased to about 0.95 at. pct W. This value is 6 times greater than the amount known up to now. -he lattice parameters of the resultant aluminum solid solutions with higher concentrations of tungsten than 0.95 at. pct W did not remain constant AUGER electron spectroscopy has been used to clarify the role of impurities in the embrittlement of AISI 3340 steel. Analysis of fracture surfaces has shown that the embrittled condition is correlated with appreciable antimony segregation at grain boundaries. The low temperature (400" to 600°C) temper embrittlement of low alloy steels containing various combinations of Cr , Ni , Sb , Mn , P , Sn , and As has been examined extensively for many years. General reviews of the area have been made by McMahon1 in 1968, LOW' in 1959, woodfine3 in 1953, and Holloman4 in 1946. calculation has been made of the standard deviations to be expected in the measurement of volume fractions by areal analysis, lineal analysis and four point-counting Procedures. The effect of experimetztal errors is not included. Our conclusion is that a point count using a two-dimensional grid will be the most efficient method of volume fraction analvsis providing the grid spacing IS coarse enough. The predicted standard deviation for such an analysis is shown to he in good agreement with that determined experimentally. A metallurgist wishing to estimate a structural property by means of quantitative metallography is often faced with a choice between several different procedures. In such a case, he will naturally wish to know: a) Which procedure is the most efficient in the sense of requiring the least effort for a given precision? b) For a given procedure, what are the conditions for maximum efficiency? c) Under these conditions, how many measurements are required to attain a given precision? It is our aim in this paper to provide at least partial answers to these queries as they relate to the estimation of volume fractions from measurements on a random two-dimensional section of an opaque specimen. The commonly used techniques1,2 for volume-fraction analyses are based on one or more of the following principles: i) For an areal or Delesse3 analysis: That the areal fraction of a three-dimensional feature intercepted by a random plane provides an unbiased estimate of the volume fraction of that feature. ii) For a lineal or Rosiwal4 analysis: That the fractional intercept on a line passing at random through a two-or three-dimensional feature provides an unbiased estimate of, respectively, the areal or volume fraction of that feature. iii) For a point-count analysis: That the fractional number of randomly or regularly dispersed points falling within the boundaries of a two-dimensional feature on a plane, or within the boundaries of a three-dimensional feature in a volume, provides an unbiased estimate of, respectively, the areal or volume fraction of that feature. The absence of bias referred to in these principles does not, of course, imply that the results of an analysis will be free of error, but only that the expected result is equal to the true one. Application of the foregoing principles provide the following six possible experimental procedures: a) An Areal Analysis—This involves the measurement with a planimeter (or other means) of the area of a constitutent intercepted by the plane of polish b) A Two-Dimensional Random Point Count—Apos-sible experimental procedure for this analysis is to superimpose a sheet of transparent graph paper on a micrograph, and then use a table of random numbers to select coordinates for the points. c) A Two-Dimensiotuzl Systematic Point Count-Similar to b) except that the points are distributed in a prescribed manner, usually at the corners of a lattice superimposed on a micrograph or the screen of a projection microscope. d)A Lineal Analysis—A measurement of the fractional line length intercepted. It is usually performed by traversing the specimen under the cross hairs of a microscope and recording the distance travelled in each constituent. e) 4 One-Dimensional Random-Point Count— This could be performed by traversing the specimen with stops at random intervals to identify the constituent then present under the cross hairs. f) A One-Dimensionul Systematic Point Count— Similar to e) except that the traverse is stopped at prescribed (usually equal) intervals. It will be noted that the point-counting procedures b) and c) can be regarded as methods of estimating the areal fraction. Similarly, e) and f) are indirect methods of making a lineal analysis. All of the six procedures described above involve at least one stage of sampling. Thus, quite apart from any experimental errors, there will always be a statistical uncertainty associated with the final results. It is with the calculation of this uncertainty that we will be concerned. To avoid unnecessary repetition, the statistical relationships that will be used in the calculations are collected together in the appendix. For a fuller discussion reference should be made to one of the many textbooks5,6 on statistics. For symbols relating to the specimen structure we will follow as far as possible the terminology used by Smith and Guttman.7

THE composition and quality of finished steel depend upon selection and proportioning of the raw materials of the charge as well as upon control of furnace practice. This chapter deals only with the raw materials of the basic open-hearth process that are important in determining the composition of the steel or slag. They are the metallic charge, oxygen-bearing materials, fluxes, alloying and deoxidizing additions, and certain refractory materials used for maintenance of bottoms. Other refractories, which may affect the slag composition, are discussed in Chapter 3. Wide variations are possible in the type and composition of charged materials but certain limiting relations among the elements of the charge must be observed. Since the process consists essentially of refining by the oxidation of undesired dements, a balance must be established between the sources of oxygen and the elements in the charge that are subject to oxidation (see Chapters 2 and 7). For example, if it is desired to use a high ratio of blast-furnace hot metal to scrap, it is necessary to add an oxygen-bearing material such as ore or mill scale to eliminate the excess carbon and silicon that are present in the hot metal. An example of the opposite extreme is the use of a metallic charge composed entirely of steel scrap. With this type of charge, it is common practice to substitute burnt lime for limestone as a flux and to charge some carbonaceous material such as coke to avoid an excess of oxygen in relation to the elements of the charge that are subject to oxidation. Elements such as copper and nickel, which are not oxidized or eliminated by, any other reaction, may be introduced into the charge only to the extent to which they are permissible in the finished steel. An example of adjustment of the charge for elements of this type is found in the use of steel scrap high in copper. In this case, metallic components of the charge other than the scrap should be low in copper, or a sufficiently high ratio of pig iron to scrap should be charged to dilute the copper from the

The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. Soon after the initiation in Belgium, the process was introduced into England, where subsequent investigation developed similar processes, which were successfully used in

THE Tri-State district, as outlined in this paper, refers to the entire mineralized area in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma (Fig. 1). The part of the district in Missouri and near Galena, Kans., is still sometimes referred to as the Joplin district (Fig. 2). The Picher-Miami area is that part of the Tri-State district located contiguously in Kansas and Oklahoma in the vicinity of Baxter Springs, Picher and Miami. This paper is confined almost wholly to the ore deposits of the Tri-State district and particularly to the Picher-Miami area. Our study of the ore deposits of this district dates from late in 1925 (by Fowler) and early in 1927 (by Lyden) to the present. Our work has been confined almost entirely to the search for ore for numerous companies and individuals. It was not possible for us to undertake numerous highly interesting investigations which presented themselves but which would not immediately help in finding ore. We particularly refer to the general structural geology of the Ozark uplift, the genesis of the ore, and other problems of a similar nature. The local and general structural problems of the district are being solved gradually as the work progresses. The factors that control the loci of the several orebodies are evident. This paper is based almost exclusively upon our own observations. Most of the important mines in the Picher-Miami area were studied in detail. A map (Fig. 5) is included which shows this area and the properties we have examined to date. When it was convenient we visited, studied and compared structural relations in numerous mines in states outside the district. Some of these observations are noted in this paper.

WHILE the yield stress of solution treated Fe-Cu alloys increases rapidly with aging, a precipitate has only been directly observed in overaged samples.'-" This precipitate is essentially pure fcc copper, the E phase. Hornbogen2 suggested that the initial hardening is due to clustering of copper atoms in a bcc iron matrix. Hornbogen was not able to obtain direct confirmation for such bcc clusters by either X-ray diffraction or electron microscopy; however, he did observe analogous clustering in Fe-Au alloys7 where the scattering factor difference between iron and gold is more favorable than that for iron and copper. Fujii, Nemoto, Suto, and Monma4 recently observed diffuse electron diffraction scattering in a 2.5 pct Cu alloy aged at 500°C: for 30 hr. They suggested that part of the diffuse SCattering was due to a modulated structure of 26 to 42 wavelength parallel to the (110) matrix plane. This disappeared with further aging. However, 30 hr at 500°C is well beyond the peak strengthening in this alloy which occurred at less than I hr at 500oc.4 By transmission electron microscopy they could not distinguish between quenched samples and samples aged to maximum strength. The purpose of the present investigation was to try to obtain further confirming evidence for a precipitation stage preceding the formation of the fcc E phase. Change in Young's modulus was selected for study be- EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The Fe-1.67 at. pct Cu alloy was supplied by the U.S. Steel Corporation in the form of a hot forged rectangular bar. The carbon and nitrogen contents of this alloy were 70 ppm and less than 10 ppm, respectively. The samples for Young's modulus measurements were made by cold swaging to & in. diam and cutting to 2 in. lengths. Tensile test samples 1 in. long were prepared by cold rolling to a thickness of 0.012 in. and then machining to gage dimensions of 0.5 by 0.012 in. For Mijssbauer studies, foils 1 mil thick were prepared by cold rolling. During fabrication the alloy was given intermediate anneals at 845OC followed by quenching. The specimens after preparation were solution treated at 1000°C (y field) or 845°C (a field) for 1 to 2 and 5 to 6 hr, respectively, in a dynamic vacuum of about 2 x lom6 torr. The tensile and modulus specimens were drop-quenched into iced brine through an aluminum foil which vacuum-sealed the bottom of the furnace tube. The MOssbauer foils were drop-quenched into helium gas cooled by passing through N2 (liq) in a copper coil. The grain diameter of the modulus and tensile specimens was between 0.025 and 0.035 mm. The samples were aged from 400" to 500°C in a dynamic vacuum of 2 x 10-6 torr and cooled by pulling into a water-cooled portion of the vacuum system. The dynamic Young's modulus was measured at room temperature using electrostatic excitation and detection of longitudinal vibrations.' Neglecting any length change during the aging, (this is expected to be comparatively small), the fractional change of Young's modulus (?Et)/Eav, is equal to twice the fractional change of the resonant frequency (?ft)/fav . ?ft =ft —fo where fo and ft are the resonant frequencies of a specimen before aging and after aging to time t. The measured f's, approximately 51,000 cps, were corrected to 25°C for any variation in the ambient temperature. The tensile tests reported were carried out at room temperature in an Instron with a 1000 lb full scale load cell. The flow stress reported herein corresponds to a strain of 0.002. The Massbauer spectra were taken in a constant acceleration model AM-1 NSEC spectrometer. The

The term "timbered stope" is here meant to denote stopes in which timbering is the predominant feature of the mining method. Stopes with stull sets, as in the Hecla mine, are types of timbered stopes; these types are probably the best-known. Timbering stopes by means of square sets is not as common as formerly, as the system is not often necessary, yet there are good examples and large tonnages are being mined by the method. The square set may be utilized in ordinary overhand stopes if the orebody is suitable. At some mines, square sets have been abandoned in favor of top-slicing; and at others, the square set has superseded horizontal cut and backfilling. A drift, either in the wall or orebody, is necessary before opening the sill floor. In wide deposits, there may be a grillage of drifts and crosscuts, and at least one raise to the level above is needed in each stope for ventilation and handling timbers and filling. The square sets are filled with waste rock from the hanging wall, sorted from the ore, from development work, or from the level above. As a rule, little timber is recovered. The examples include the Butte district, Mother Lode of California, Bunker Hill & Sullivan, Hecla, and Morning mines.

THOUGH powder metallurgy is one of the oldest of metallurgical processes, it is in its infancy as a branch of the modern field of metallurgy. As early as 3000 B.C., the ancients produced implements and weapons of iron by reducing iron ore in a charcoal fire and forging the resultant sponge while still hot into the desired shape. Melting and casting soon superseded the powder metallurgy practice, and it was not until the turn of the twentieth century that powder metallurgy was applied to the commercial manufacture of tungsten lamp filaments. From this beginning, the use of the powder metallurgy process spread to the manufacture of porous oil-impregnated bearings, cemented carbide tools, contact points, diamond grinding wheels, clutch facings, starter brushes, resin-bonded radio cores, magnets, metallic filters, and other parts. More recently, and particularly during the present war, there has been a definite trend toward the manufacture of machine parts by this process in competition with the more conventional fabricating methods. Notwithstanding these many developments, scientific progress has been slow. While many articles on powder metallurgy have appeared in the press and various publications, there have been too few contributions to our technical societies, with the result that there is a dearth of the type of information necessary for the full development of this science. It is of primary importance that the results of research and development be freely disseminated if powder metallurgy is to realize its fullest potentialities. PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION Excluding the refractory metal field, all commercial powder metallurgical products made by a cold compressing and sintering operation contain voids. These voids can be substantially eliminated by subsequent severe working and heat-treatment, but such practice has not proved economical in most applications. By applying heat during the compressing operation, plastic deformation of the powder particles is substantially increased, and the resultant compact or briquette is practically free of voids. However, hot-pressing has many attendant problems, which at present preclude its use in the manufacture of precision parts. The more important of these are to devise: I. A die steel capable of withstanding high pressures at elevated temperatures. 2. A high-temperature lubricant capable of preventing excessive die wear and welding of the compact to the die walls. 3. A method of retaining a neutral or reducing atmosphere in the compacting zone of the die assembly. 4. A means of ejecting the hot-pressed specimen into a neutral atmosphere until reasonably cold.

An attempt has been made to compare the influences of the two most widely used depressants—alkalis and sodium cyanide—and the most widely used activator—copper sulfate—on the air-mineral contact induced by five sulfur-bearing compounds: (1) sodium di-ethyl dithio-phosphate (sodium Aerofloat); (2) potassium ethyl xanthate; (3) sodium di-ethyl dithiocarbamate; (4) potassium iso-amyl xanthate; (5) potassium di-n-amyl dithiocarbamate. Three different organic types are included in lhis group and for two of these types a higher and a lower homologue have been tested. The study of potassium ethyl xanthate, the preliminary results of which have been described,' was continued until there had been obtained a comprehensive account of the influence of variations in pH value and in the concentrations of xanthate, sodium cyanide and copper sulfate on the adsorption of this xanthate by galena, sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. With concentrations of copper sulfate and collector that the work with ethyl xanthate indicated would give the most illuminating. results, the other four collectors were tested, in a less exhaustive way. The same general principles determine the influence of alkalis, cyanide and copper sulfate, no matter to which type the collector belongs, but there is a gradation in the quantitative measure of such influence. In the list above, the five collectors are cited in the order of their capacity to withstand the depressants, sodium Aerofloat being the least resistant, potassium di-n-amyl dithiocarbamate the most resistant. This order coincides substantially with that of the solubilities of the heavy metal salts formed by double decomposition with the collectors, those formed from sodium Aerofloat being most soluble. There is little difference between the third and fourth members of the series, and under certain conditions their positions are reversed. In general, then, of the three types of collectors investigated, the dithiophosphate type is most easily influenced by depressants, and the

The paper is in two parts. The first develops the formulae and method needed to calculate the size, nu)nber, spacing, and volume fraction of hard or inert particles in the interior of a specimen from measurernents made on an extraction replica; throughout, the spread of- particle sizes in a single specimen is taken into account, and the extraction efficiency of the replica is considered. A method for testing whether the particles are randotnly distributed in space is described, and the spacing of randomly distributed particles is discussed. The second Part describes the application of the method to copper containing spherical particles of silica; the description includes an estimate of the errors involved, and a comparison of this with alternative methods. All parameters except uolume fraction can be determined satisfactorily, and the method offers advantages over other electron-,rzicroscopic techniques when dealing with hard particles in a softer matrix, or inert particles in a chem-ically less inert matrix. 1 HE experimental measurement of sizes and numbers of discrete particles of a second phase embedded in a matrix material from opaque, plane sections has been considered by many authors, notably by Fullman.' It is assumed that, when the specimen is sectioned, the particles are also sectioned, so that the diameters of the circles of intersection of particles with the plane of the cross section ("surface diameters") are measured. It is difficult to derive the distribution of true particle diameters ("volume diameters") from measurements of the distribution of "surface diameters" on a plane section. The measurement of size and numbers of small second-phase particles by transmission electron microscopy through thin foils of matrix containing the particles has been described by Cahn and ~uttin~' and by ~illiard.~ Because of overlap and the fact that particles which intersect the foil surface may be sectioned whereas those in the bulk of the foil are not, it is again difficult to measure the true distribution of particle sizes. The use of replicas for this sort of measurement has not been analyzed in detail. A replica made from an opaque cross section, thus replicating the circles of intersection of particles with the plane of section, is analyzed by Fullman's method and suffers from the same difficulties. Under certain circumstances, however, extraction replicas can be used, and offer a special advantage in that they make the determination of the true distribution of particle diameters particularly simple. It is the purpose of this paper to describe this extraction replica method. Consider the example of an alloy consisting of SiOz particles, whose mean diameter is about 1000A, dispersed in a copper matrix. When the alloy is sectioned and mechanically polished, the particles are not sectioned, because they are much harder than the matrix, and so will be either left in the surface or pulled out whole, and because the particle size is smaller than the abrasive size of even the finest abrasive. The particles are chemically inert in solutions which chemically etch or electropolish the matrix, so that chemical treatments do not section the particles either. (Experimental measurements of particle shape in this alloy confirm this—truncated particles are never seen.) Small, hard or inert, particles are therefore not sectioned when the specimen is sectioned and polished. An extraction replica taken from this polished surface shows the true "volume" diameter of each extracted particle; the distribution of diameters seen on the replica is the surface distribution of true "volume" diameters, and the volume distribution of true "volume" diameters is easily derived from it. The extraction replica method is not subject to the difficulties associated with sectioning of particles, and avoids the problem of overlap from which the transmission method suffers. The method is well-suited for studying hard particles in a soft matrix. Examples are provided by internally oxidized alloys, oxide-dispersion strengthened metals like T.D. Nickel, and carbides, nitrides, and strong intermetallic compounds in metals. It should be possible to adapt polishing techniques in alloys containing softer but inert particles to avoid sectioning the particles (say by electropolishing or etching). The method is tested and illustrated in Sections 8 and 9 by applying it to a dispersion of spherical SiO2 particles in a copper matrix. THE metallurgical polarization microscope has been utilized in several researches in the last few years, thus attaining a fair degree of prominence, but little has been written in a manner suitable to a metallurgist concern-ing the theory of this instrument. In this investigation the theory was carefully studied, and the results are presented here in a detailed manner, yet as simply as possible. The theory is discussed with particular reference to the three chief functions of the instrument: (1) determination of anisotropy; (2) effect of strain; and (3) identification of inclusions. Each of these is investigated experimentally, with especial attention to the mechanism of producing any effect. Where possible, the discussion is supplemented by photomicrographs. The instrument used had numerous defects as a polarization microscope; these and their remedies are discussed. In the microscopic study of transparent mineral sections (chal-cography) the use of polarized light has aided tremendously in the identification of a mineral. The determination of strain in transparent substances (photoelasticity) by the use of polarized light has lately become a commercial process, used in testing finished glass articles. The success of the use of polarized light with opaque materials has not been so great. The magnitude of the effects obtained is much less than that of the corresponding effects with transparent materials, and the mechanical difficulties are much greater. IT would clearly be advantageous to produce molten titanium, suitable for alloying and casting, directly from the relatively inexpensive tetra-chloride, without using a metallic reducing agent. Accordingly, a preliminary investigation has been made of the production of titanium by hydrogen reduction of the tetrachloride in an electric arc furnace. For the reaction: TiCl4(g) + 2H2(g) ? Ti(s) + 4HCl(g), Lockhart and his colleagues' have calculated equilibrium constants at 800" to 1500°K, based on tables of Brewer.' Extrapolating these data on the assumption that the heat of reaction varies linearly with temperature, and using Brewer's value for the heat of fusion, there is obtained for the reaction: TiCl4(g) + 2H2(g) ? Ti(l) + 4HCl(g) an equilibrium constant at 2100°K (100" above the melting point) Kp = (PHCl)4/pTlcl4 (Ph2)2 = 0.167 atm. If this is correct, starting with hydrogen saturated with TiC14 at 25°C, where the vapor pressure of the latter3 is 12.6 mm, and maintaining the overall pressure at 1 atm, 99 1/4 pct of the TiC14 would be reduced to Ti at equilibrium. An arc furnace designed for the melting of titanium and lined with water-cooled copper was used for the preliminary experimental check. Its inside diameter was 2 7/16 in. and height 6 in. The water-cooled electrode was tipped with 3/4 in. diam tung-sten. In the one run carried out, the furnace was charged with a starting batch of 293.35 g of scrap titanium,' analyzing 99.24 pct Ti. After the system was twice pumped out and flushed with argon to remove air, the arc was struck in argon and kept at 400 amp dc, electrode negative, for 1 min to melt the starting batch. Commercial tank hydrogen, dried by passing over silica gel and bubbled through technical grade TiC14 at room temperature, was then admitted to the furnace. The inlet tube directed this gas downward toward the arc and melt; the gas outlet was at the top of the furnace. The quantity of gas passed through was not measured accurately but is estimated to be about 50 liters per min at a few mm of mercury above atmospheric pressure. The arc was held in the H2-TiC14 mixture at 400 amp with little difficulty. After 10 min the arc burned through the copper lining above the melt, admitting water and ending the run. (This had happened frequently in straight melting runs under argon, and is not thought due to the atmosphere used.) In the furnace were found an ingot, several small pieces, and a little metallic powder, evidently formed when water entered the hot furnace. Some titanium also clung to the electrode. The portions were weighed and separately analyzed for titanium. Their total weight was 321.76 g of 94.82 pct overall purity. Much of the impurity consisted of tungsten broken off when the titanium was removed from the electrode. No detailed impurity analysis was made because the starting materials were impure and flooding the furnace introduced further contamination. Thus, the metal recovered contained 305.08 g Ti, as compared to 291.12 g in the starting batch. Titanium could not have been carried over from previous melting runs in the furnace, as the interior was sandblasted and the electrode ground clean before the run. Evidently at least 13.96 g of Ti were produced from TiCl4. Since this would require complete reduction of 430 liters of TiCl, gas at 12.6 mm of Hg, the efficiency of the process must have been rather high. Experimental work is continuing. No reason is seen why the process could not be scaled up to the size of a 30-ton steel-melting arc furnace. In a large unit there would be a large molten pool from which liquid metal could be withdrawn for alloying and casting. The problems of electrodes and power supply are similar to those arising in arc furnaces for melting titanium. Unreacted TiC14 and the HC1 in the exhaust gases could be recovered; unreacted H2 could be dried and re-used. The melt would be saturated with hydrogen, whose solubility in liquid titanium is unknown. Small amounts of hydrogen seem to have little effect on the properties of titanium.5 If the amount introduced was so large as to impair properties or cause casting difficulties, it could be reduced by holding the melt under an inert gas or by pumping on it, prior to casting. IT is very difficult to arrive at exact figures for the cost of maintaining excess capacity of coal mines, but we can approximate the various items. To do this, I will take the Pittsburgh district of Pennsylvania and the other districts can be compared to this one. I believe we can take the depreciation item of plant ac- count as a whole and discount it over a period of 20 years; while this is high for some items it is low for others and I believe it is not far from a safe basis. This equals 5 per cent per year, and this depreciation will take place about as rapidly when not in use as when in operation. A fair value in the Pittsburgh district to- day for plant and houses is close to $4 per ton per annum. At 5 per cent this will equal 20 cents per ton per year. The item of keeping the mine in condition, free from water, etc., will be close to an average of 2y2 cents per ton per annum.

s-plutonium samples possessing a strong growth texture have been produced by allowing them to transform under pressure from p to a. A fiber texture with [010] parallel to the pressure axis results. The textured samples are expected to be useful in determining the effects of crystallographic orientation on the physical properties of a plutonium, and initial results of measurements of resistivity and mechanical properties are described. THE crystal structure of a plutonium1 is mono-clinic, P21/m, and many of the metal's properties should reflect the crystallographic anisotropy. Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to grow useful sizes of single crystals of a plutonium. Therefore, few of plutonium's orientation-sensitive properties have been determined as a function of crystallographic orientation. One way to gain information about at least some of the orientation-dependent properties is to study a highly textured sample. Such samples have been produced by cold rolling a plutonium,2 but they are necessarily very small in one dimension. We have now successfully used two other techniques to produce highly textured samples, not limited to small thicknesses. METHODS OF PRODUCING PREFERRED ORIENTATION The texture is produced by causing the plutonium to transform from ß to a while under pressure. It was observed by Gardner3 that applying a compres-sive load during the transformation resulted in the formation of columnar grains of a plutonium, and Cramer4 observed a similar structure in some diffusion couples rolled in the P phase. Neither of these workers, however, investigated the subject beyond these observations. The more flexible of the two methods developed is that of compressive loading. The technique is to enclose a sample of plutonium in a die assembly before applying the load. It is possible, of course, to dispense with the die and simply press the sample between two platens. In this case, however, the unrestrained sample deforms during the pressing, making it difficult to maintain the load and to control the final sample thickness. This compressive loading technique has been used on specimens ranging from 1/4 to 3 in. diameter, with height-to-diameter ratios ranging from 5 : l to 1:6. The procedure begins with loading the sample, a right cylinder of a plutonium, into the pressing die. Plastic deformation of the sample while it is being pressed is minimized by machining the sample so that its diameter is nearly the same as that of the die barrel. Then the loaded die assembly is placed in a vacuum pressing can that fits on a hydraulic press. After a vacuum is achieved the die assembly is heated to 180°C and equilibrated. The load is then applied and the specimen and die are allowed to cool to about 40° to 50°C before the pressure is removed. The resulting sample is composed of rod-shaped a -plutonium grains, the rod axes being parallel to the cylinder axis and the pressing direction. Photomicrographs of the oriented structure are shown in Fig. 1. Although most of the specimen is composed of grains whose rod axes are parallel to the cylinder axis, a thin, peripheral layer consists of rod-shaped grains whose rod axes are perpendicular to the cylinder axis. Presumably, the highly plastic nature of p plutonium leads to approximately hydrostatic conditions during the initial stages of the P — a transformation under pressure. At this time, the grains in the peripheral layer would have grown parallel to the local force direction. During the latter stages of the transformation, the accompanying volume contraction would have eliminated the radial forces, leaving only the axial force and resulting in the growth of the observed structure. NATURAL carbon dioxide has recently been exploited in the United States in consequence of oil and gas developments in the Western States and the growing demand by transcontinental and transoceanic shippers for solid carbon dioxide. The discovery by drilling of commercial deposits resulted in consideration of its geographic and geologic distribution and occurrence. Its wide distribution in nature is evidenced by its occurrence in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. The question of origin of carbon dioxide involves consideration of theories similar to those concerning natural hydrocarbons, although available evidence favors an inor-ganic rather than an organic source. Areas favorable to development of commercial production appear to be those in proximity to igneous rocks or in the vicinity of decadent volcanic activity, where, it has long been known, the gas is evolved either free or dissolved in the waters of furnaroles, geysers or mud pots. Structure contour maps are presented showing the Wagon Mound anticline in New Mexico and the Farnham anticline, Utah. A well drilled on the latter supplies gas to a 20-ton plant manufacturing solid carbon dioxide at Wellington, Utah, on the Denver and Rio Grande R.R., whence it is shipped to surrounding territory and to the West Coast. Before funds are invested in a plant for the manufacture of liquid or solid carbon dioxide, whether supplied by wells or springs, an effort to ascertain the volume of gas available is advisable. The use of present methods of estimation of gas reserves with modifications to account for the quantity absorbed by any water present in the produc-ing formation is recommended. The Farnham anticline is used as an example and computations are made of the probable volume of gas originally present in the struc-ture. No attempt was made to compute reserves in the Niland area, California, for the reason that in such areas it is believed the volume is indeterminate.

SINCE the discussion On steel rails in America has forcibly drawn attention to the value of chemical analysis, if not as a necessary stipulation, at least as a guide to control the usual mechanical tests, some doubt has been thrown upon the accuracy of the analytical results Obtained by different chemists. To any One having the least acquaintance with chemistry., it is quite clear that if exactly similar results are to be obtained from the same borings of steel, exactly the same methods must be used by the different analysts. Hence the necessity (if complications are to be avoided) of establishing what I may call standard or normal methods, to be used both by the inspectors and by the chemists at the works. Remembering that the application' of chemistry to steel-rail inspection is yet in its infancy, it is of great importance to possess a perfect acquaintance with the best methods in use. Being myself a grateful pupil of Professor Eggertz, of the School of Mines in Sweden, it Occurred to me, two. years ago, that I could not do better than start a laboratory of my. own, and engage One of his pupils, Mr. Troilius, for the purpose of analyzing the steel borings from mechanically-tested rails, so that I might thus Obtain without delay thoroughly accurate determinations. Moreover, in Order to carry on the, operations in perfect accordance with the methods used at the steel works in England and Germany, where I had to control the manufacture, I deemed it desirable to allow Mr. Troilius to go through a course of training at these works; and I gladly seize this opportunity of expressing my grateful acknowledgments to several works in England and in Germany for affording every facility for such an exchange of information as was found necessary in arriving at the best analytical methods to be used.

The object of this paper is to describe the electric equipment at the iron-ore mines of Penn Iron Mining Co., Vulcan, Mich. and of Republic Iron Co., Republic, Mich.; to give the results of tests; and to discuss the methods in use from an operating as well as from an efficiency standpoint. Electricity was introduced at the Penn mines for pumping, hoisting, and compressing air in the spring of 1907, upon the completion of a hydro-electric plant built by that company on the Menominee river about 4 miles from the mines. This plant was described in a paper1 presented before the Lake Superior Mining Institute. A paper2 presented at a meeting of the same Institute describes some of the operating features, and the safety devices of the electric hoist at the Curry shaft were briefly described in the Proceedings of the First Co-operative Safety Congress held under the auspices of the Association of Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers at Milwaukee, Wis., Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, 1912. Generating PoweR Plants After the success of electrical operation was assured, a second set of water wheels and generator was installed at the falls, for which provision had been made in the original design and in the construction of the foundations, and later three additional wires were added to the main transmission line, doubling its capacity and reducing the line loss. The general conditions of this installation are particularly favorable for hydro-electric operation. In the neighborhood of three-fourths of the power used is for mine pumping, which in the main is regular and continuous.
