THE proper material of construction for a given purpose is that material which meets the requirements satisfactorily at the lowest ultirnatc cost. It is consistent with this principle that most aluminum castings are made of an alloy containing about 8 per cent. copper. This alloy possesses mechanical properties satisfactory for general engineering purposes together with manufacturing characteristics leading to the production of finished castings at low cost. It is to the aluminum industry what gray iron is to the iron and steel industry. Just as some services require "semi-steel," malleable castings or steel castings instead of gray iron, there is a certain and growing demand for aluminum castings of superior strength or ductility, or both. Since the beginning of .the industry producers and others have sought to develop alloys or processes by which such castings could be made. Out of these efforts have emerged many alloy compositions and special processes, of which only a few have had sufficient merit to survive. It is the purpose of this paper to describe those which seem to the authors to offer the greatest promise for the production on a commercial scale of aluminum castings of superior mechanical properties, with special reference to heat-treated castings. The suitability of an alloy or process for actual manufacture is affected by so many factors that the problem of appraisal is not a simple one. Since this is such an important part of the whole subject it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the requirements. The final verdict is of course the result of commercial trial and experience. It will therefore, perhaps, be profitable to employ a somewhat historical method of treatment in discussing the subject of alloy development. The alloys or processes to be used in the production of aluminum castings are to be considered from the standpoint of their effects on both the utility and the cost of the finished casting. On the steep slopes of the Kootenays, 15 to 20 miles south of Nelson, B. C., are a number of ore occurrences (Fig. 1). One that has many features of mining and geological interest is the Ymir Yankee Girl Gold Mines Limited. Discovery of this property was made in 1899 at an outcrop on the hillside, some 2500 ft. above the village of Ymir. This proved to be a branch vein 20 ft. long leading to two main veins, the Yankee Girl and the Spur (Fig. 5). The ore pattern as now delimited shows a remarkable increase in ore area with depth below the outcrop. This recent development is of interest particularly in view of the fact that the property was nearly condemned, professionally. Another interesting feature, which has a bearing upon its history, is the persistent excess of tonnage produced from period to period over visible reserves. This is not ascribed to lagging mine development, but to detailed vein characteristics, which we will endeavor to make clear by giving a description of the veins and their surroundings. HISTORY AND PRODUCTION Little interest_was_evidenced-in this-distriet until the building of the railway in 1893 provided easy access and the discovery of the Ymir mine in 1896 attracted attention. As a result, the Ymir Yankee Girl group of claims was staked in October 1899. In 1907, an American syndicate took over the property and subsequently extended the 50-ft. drift and opened the present 400 and 540-ft. levels. In 1908, the Syndicate, without recording any shipments in the meantime, dropped its lease, which was taken up by H. L. Rogers, who bonded the Yankee Girl group. Rogers shipped 2622 tons of ore, mainly from the uppermost stope in the mine, which is reported to have yielded

THE unusual physical, electrical and magnetic properties of the iron-nickel alloys has given rise to a voluminous literature. This work will be reviewed critically in "The Alloys of Iron and Nickel," a monograph of the Alloys of Iron Research Series, soon to be published. In what follows we shall therefore confine ourselves to those of the earlier investi-gations that involved the use of X-ray crystal-structure methods. The earliest X-ray work on the iron-nickel system was by Miss Andrews1. Using the powder method of X-ray analysis purely as a means of identifying the phases present, she located a region between 20 and 30 weight per cent nickel in which body-centered and face-centered phases coexisted. No lattice constants nor details of heat-treat-ment were reported. Bain2 also reported some qualitative observations. McKeehan3 made a systematic investigation over the whole of the system, giving many of his alloys four and some five different heat-treatments. In alloys furnace-cooled from 900° to 950° C. he found two coexisting phases between 0.15 and 30 per cent nickel. The precision of the lattice-constant measurements was low in comparison with what can be obtained today.. Even for alloys of the same heat-treatment, differences in the constants were often between two and ten parts per thousand. In regions where no change of lattice constant with heat-treatment should occur, differences of the same order of magnitude were found. Since the maximum change in the lattice constant of nickel with change of composition is only about 2 per cent of the constant for pure nickel, these variations in the constants for a given alloy cause the points

Costly damage by severe wave attack to many engineering structures has illustrated the need for a consideration of the nature of wave action in plans for offshore drilling operations. Using wave data it is possible to answer questions pertaining to engineering problems such as platform elevation, structure orientation, and expected wave forces. For locations where wave records are not available a technique can be used to obtain information about wave characteristics from past meteorological data and near shore submarine topography. Forces exerted on structures by waves may be divided into four parts. A completed study is given in which frequencies of various wave heights and maximum frictional drag forces are computed for a typical offshore drilling site. INTRODUCTION Waves of tremendous proportions accompanying hurricane winds crash against breakwaters and other offshore structures causing untold damages. Wave forces exerted on structures at these times are enormous, as shown by past records of incidents where massive portions of breakwaters have been broken off and moved by waves. On other similar occasions, whole structure; have been unloosed and smashed or floated away. These incidents, which seem almost incredible, serve to illustrate the great amount of energy contained in large waves, and to show that this energy results in powerful forces destructive to offshore installation~ which are not designed sufficiently strong to withstand wave attack. In the past the expected frequencies of waves having various characteristic.% have rarely been considered in the design of structure affected by wave action. As a result, many structures have failed to accomplish the purpose for which they were designed or have collapsed under wave attack. Others have been constructed to withstand greater wave energy than is ever encountered, with resulting waste of material and construction time. In this study an analysis is made of the frequencies of waves having different characteristics which affect the plans for offshore drilling installations. After such an analysis the erection of these structures can proceed with less risk involved and with more efficiency and economy. ENGINEERING ASPECTS In the offshore drilling program wave forces play an extremely important part in design and construction of drilling rigs in shallow water. The design of a platform or other structure from which drilling equipment is operated is critical, becauze any damage to the platform may endanger personnel and result in complete loss of equipment. Since a platform built too close to the water would be battered by breakers, and one built unnecessarily high would involve undue expense, it is necessary to know the most desirable elevation at which the platform should be erected. This is only one of many questions about structural planning which can be answered using existing technique for determining wave characteristics. The purpose of efficient design for the portions of many types of offshore structures which are acted upon by wave forces is the same as that of all designs which deal with frictional forces of a fluid on a solid. For these structures the problem is comparable to that encountered by undersea craft moving through water, except that in the case of a fixed structure the force is produced by the water moving past the model. For off shore sructures which are extremely rigid the frictional forces may be nearly negligible compared with the impact or shock forces imparted by breaking waves. In all case; the better design is that which offers the least resistance to the opposing forces. From a consideration of wave forces, each drilling structure varies in efficiency depending upon the type and amount of superstructure in contact with the waves. For example, round piling and bracing offer less resistance to wave forces than do I-shaped ones. All network superstructure such as cross bracing should be kept to a minimum and at as low an elevation as possible, so that it will not expecience the pressure exerted at the tops of breaking waves. Models of proposed structures can be tested in wave tanks and in the field to ascertain the efficiency of specific designs. Past experience in beach and shoreline engineering has shown that, although changes in the topography of the bottom very near shore do not seem to be occurring, the natural forces involved may be in a delicate balance such that a static state exists. Interruptions of any of these natural forces by erecting offshore structures are likely to cause undesirable effects. Changes in beach profile result partly from sediment being brought into suspension by the orbital motion of waves and partly from the transport of sediment by longshore currents. With the erection of an offshore structure and consequent change in the combined effects of these two forces, unfavorable deposition upon, or erosion of, the bottom at the site may occur. Therefore, combination wave and current studies are essential for the solution of problems involved in the design of most marine structures. TECHNIQUE FOR OBTAINING WAVE INFORMATION In determining the probable effect of wave action on an offshore drilling structure, it is first necessary to know the usual frequencies of certain wave types for the given location. THE need for new or improved refractory materials has caused metal phosphides to be given renewed scrutiny. Some metal phosphides show high-temperature inertness, are exceptionally hard, and exhibit a marked resistance to chemical attack. Various metal phosphides have been prepared for study by direct combination of the elements,'-' by reaction of metal or metal compounds with phosphine or phosphorus trichloride,'"' by thermal decomposition of a metallic phosphate or phosphite,"-'8 and by molten salt electrolysis.19 Electrolytic preparation of phosphides of titanium, manganese, and chromium from their oxides is reported in this paper. An externally heated 3-in.-ID by 6-in.-deep graphite cell, that served as the anode as well as a container for the electrolyte, was used in these investigations, and a suspended, centrally positioned graphite rod served as the cathode. A closely fitting silicon carbide furnace liner minimized atmospheric oxidation of the crucible. Electrolyses were performed for predetermined periods and current settings. Preliminary research had indicated the more efficient current and potential settings that could be used. Upon completion of the deposition period, the deposit was hot-stripped from the cathode. The mass of crystalline deposit, plus occluded and adhering salt, was crushed to minus 10 mesh and hot-leached in dilute hydrochloric acid. The leached crystalline material was water-washed, dried, and sampled for analysis. Products were identified by X-ray diffraction and standard analytical procedures. Electrochemical studies were initiated to establish the optimum conditions necessary to produce manganese phosphide (MnP), titanium phosphide (Tip), and chromium phosphide (CrP). Among the factors studied were the operating temperature, the imposed current, and the electrolyte system. If the temperature, or imposed current, was too high, deposition of phosphorus resulted, and if either were too low, partially reduced lower oxides were deposited. The operating conditions established for repetitive high-quality production of metal phosphides of the MP structure are presented in Table I. The metal phosphide crystals varied in size, but all had a definite metallic appearance. Typical are the crystals of CrP shown in Fig. 1. Evaluation data and analysis of the crystals are presented in Table 11. Efforts to measure resistivity of these three compounds over the temperature ranges of 250o to 400°K were hampered by the small physical size of the crys-

IN many countries the lack of liquid petroleum supplies has centered interest upon the hydrogenation of coal and coal tars for the preparation of motor fuel. In the United States, hydrogenation has been of greater interest for grading up low-value petroleum fractions to the more valuable volatile fuels and for the preparation of a variety of premium products, including aviation gasolines, solvents, Diesel fuels, and lubricating oils. Chemically, the basic reason for this process is that, as shown in Table 1, the ratio of hydrogen to carbon (H/C ratio) in available raw materials is quite different from that characterizing the products sought.

Single crystals of vanadium were bent at 293" and 77°K to a maximum fiber strain of about 1 pct. Analysis of slip line and etch markings of- crystals deformed at either temperature show the slip planes are {112}. The slip directions at 298° and 77°K, deterwined from the asterism axes of rotation of crystals compressed in a {110} direclion, were (111). Etch pits, associated with dislocations, were observed in the plastically deformed vanadium. There was no evidence of mechanical twinning. THIS paper presents results on single crystals of vanadium plastically deformed by bending and compressing at 298° and 77°K. Bcc metals have been observed to slip on {110}, (1121, and (123) planes while the slip direction has invariably been found to be ( 111) 1 Lindley and smallman2 have studied the deformation intension of polycrystalline vanadium between 298° and 20°K and reported that at and above 77°K the deformation is predominantly by slip, but at 20°K the deformation is associated with twinning. Later, Edington and smallman3 found that single crystals of vanadium compressed in a (111) direction at 77°K deformed by twinning on { 112}( 111) systems. Clough and pavlovic4 have reported that mechanical twins were observed in vanadium loaded by impact at 77°, 173°, and 195°K, respectively. PREPARATION OF SINGLE CRYSTALS The vanadium single crystals were made from commercial vanadium reported to contain 0.03 pct C, 0.03 pct 0, 0.02 pct N, 0.0X* pct Ca, 0.0X pct Si, proximately 0.8 cm diam, 4 cm long and were grown in (100) and (110) directions. A crystal for studies of etch pits was gound to have a face parallel to a {l00} plane by the Bond crystal-orienting technique.7 In order to avoid straining, the crystals were placed on the steel mount with a low-melting organic compound (glycol phthalate) before grinding. Crystals for the bending experiments were ground to have the four side faces parallel to ( 100) planes. The crystals were electropolished8 in 10 pct H2So4 using a current density of about 3 amp per sq cm to remove the strained surface material. The crystals were bent slowly by three-point loading in a stainless-steel jig designed by Sylwestrowicz.9 The end rollers of the jig were 3.8 cm apart. DEFORMATION AT 298°K The bent vanadium crystal, after removal from the jig, had a radius of curvature of 20.4 cm over the 2-cm length close to the center loading roller, where the maximum bending moment occurred. This radius of curvature corresponded to a maximum fiber strain of 0.9 pet. The side faces contained slip bands as shown in Fig. 1. These bands are straight where the strain is high, top and bottom of micrograph, but are curved on either side of the neutral axis in the center. This curvature of the slip bands in the low-stress area may be due to cross slip. The plastically deformed crystal was subsequently electropolished and then electroetched in 10 pct H2SO4 solution, using a current density of 0.25 amp per sq cm. The structure is shown in Fig. 2. INTRODUCTION IRON-ORE deposits in the Philippine Islands became the subject of official record as early as 1664. Undoubtedly iron ore was known and recognized by the Filipinos long before the earliest Spanish records. It is even possible that the Filipino practice of smelting iron ore is, like the native copper smelting, older than the Spanish conquest of the islands. The first records have to do with the magnetite-hematite ores near the towns of Santa Inez and Bosoboso in Rizal Province, from 15 to 20 miles east of Manila. The magnetite-hematite ores of Bulacan were exploited in 1783. Similar ores near the town of Mambulao in Camarines Province yielded a number of specimens to be exhibited in Spain in 1834. With the exception, then, of the lateritic iron ores on the eastern coast of northern Surigao, the true nature of which was not recognized until 1914, the important iron-ore deposits of the Philippines had all been discovered before the islands came under the dominion of the United States. Indeed, in the Spanish documents relating to the history of iron mining are statements which, if their accuracy be not questioned, leave us in the Philippines today with much less iron ore than the Spaniards found. To quote, for example, a report submitted to the Superior Government in Spain in 1835 by one of its emissaries, Don Lorenzo Calvo: "The Philippine Islands, most excellent Sir, possess iron and exhibit it in nearly every known mineralogical combination, and in such abundance that the cordillera of the island of Luzon, from Montufar Point in San Bernardino Straits to Cape Bojeador, is composed of no other mineral than iron, its ranges, of the third order, being in content and structure totally iron of the best quality, the more valuable in that its combinations are such as to facilitate its fusion and to render its reduction to metal simple."

At high temperatues and reduced oxygen pressuves, molybdenum silicicles oxidize to form SiO(g) vathev than a passivating SiO2 film. This is a sevious problem for low-pressure applications of sili-cide-coated rejvactory tnetals. As oxiclalion pvoceeds, the higher oxidntion potential of silicon initially suppresses oxidation of molybdenum and silicon is depleted near the surface. Eventually, silicon depletion causes secondary passivation (SiO2) mid an active to passiue transition in oxidntion behavior at moderately low pressures. At very low pressures, silicon depletion continues until steady-state oxidation of both silicon and rnolyhdenum can proceed at rates propovtional to their initial stoicliiorrzetvies. Ohsel-vations of 'oxidatiou-rate belzcriliov at temperatures from 1101° to 1700°C and oxygen pressures from 10-7 to 1 at in were made using thermogravimetn'c, X-ray diffraction, and elect?*on-rtric?ro/,vobe techniqrres. The experimental results are in good agreement with calculated lirnits for the various types of behavior that were based on tlievtnochernicnl atzd dffusion rate data for the Mo-Si system. A protective oxide film normally forms during the oxidation of elemental silicon. However, at elevated temperatures and reduced pressures this film is not present and oxidation is rapid. wagnerl has shown that this behavior occurs because SiO(g) is more stable than SiO2. The behavior of the silicides at high temperatures is similar but more complicated. Molybdenum and several silicide compounds are involved and the chemical activity of silicon, or the equivalent silicon vapor pressure, can vary considerably in these phases. Also, diffusion in the silicides resulting from reactions in which a higher silicide is reduced to a lower silicide, or molybdenum containing dissolved silicon, must be considered. EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL METHODS Isothermal oxidation experiments were conducted using hot-pressed MoSi2 and Mo5Si3 wafers. Each experiment was conducted at a fixed oxygen pressure by controlling the flow of oxygen in and out of the furnace chamber. Most of the experiments were conducted in a molybdenum-wound tube furnace. Special construction features, including use of a high-purity dense A12O3 refractory tube, permitted operation in high vacuum to 1500°C. Higher temperatures could be obtained at higher working pressures and with a sacrifice of tube lifetime. Temperature was measured with three Pt 6 pct Rh/Pt 30 pct Rh thermocouples and controlled with a proportional controller. Weight changes were monitored with a quartz spring balance. The few experiments, at higher temperatures and low pressures, were conducted in a cold wall vacuum chamber using induction heating with direct susceptance of the sample. Because of the variable levitation effect of the induction coil on the sample, weight changes could not be monitored continuously in these experiments. All samples representing both experimental methods were weighed before and after oxidiation and examined with a microscope and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The analytical treatment assumes equilibrium at interfaces and uses existing thermodynamic data. For convenience, equilibria are expressed as chemical potentials or as vapor pressures of the gases involved. The resulting differences in equilibrium vapor pressure between adjacent interfaces and between the surface and external atmosphere drive diffusion processes in the solid and gas boundary film, respectively. These diffusion processes govern the rate of oxidation. A bibliography of the sources of thermochemical data for the reactions pertinent to the Mo-Si-O system is given in Table I. Reactions are listed with the sources of free-energy data referenced. Since all of these reactions involve one or more gas species, usually oxygen, a plot of the product-gas chemical potential, -RT In Pg, vs absolute temperature for each reaction is given in Fig. 1. These curves can be used to determine equilibrium vapor pressures or to compare the stability of different compounds in the various gases: O2, Si, SiO, and Moo3,. The data of Table I and Fig. 1 were used to determine the analytical results presented in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The weight changes for three MoSi, samples oxidized at 1500°C are plotted against time in Fig. 2. The treatments were identical except for the indicated variance of oxygen pressure and each curve represents one of three characteristic types of behavior that were observed. PETROLEUM consumption during 1946 broke all previous records and further increases are expected during 1947. U. S. consumption amounted to an average of 5,280,000 bbl a day, of which 4,745,000 bbl was domestic crude oil, with the rest from natural gasoline production and crude oil imports. World consumption during the past year, excluding Russia, is estimated at 7,200,000 bbl daily. Forecasts for 1947 indicate a U. S. consumption of 5,425,000 bbl daily of petroleum products. This is expected to be made up of 4,655,000 bbl of domestic crude oil production, 340,000 bbl of natural gasoline production, 400,000 bbl of crude oil imports, and the rest from stocks. Petroleum's principal use is still as a fuel. The field remains highly competitive, but petroleum has been continuously progressing. Less than fifty years ago, oil supplied only one twentieth as much of the nation's total energy as coal, but today it supplies over half as much.

An inventory of the mineral resources of a region is a most desirable basis for planning their systematic development. In the absence of appropriate samples upon which to base a reliable estimate of this inventory, investigators have resorted to a number of indirect approaches; the unit regional value concept forms the basis for one such approach. The produced resources of a region are a function of the inventory multiplied by the degree of intensity (some fraction between zero and one) of development of the resources. A convenient means of expressing this amount is to accumulate the weight and value of resource and to prorate the totals over the area represented by the unit sampled; i.e., weight and value per unit area or tonnes/km.2 and U.S. 1967 $/km.2. When this approach is used for the U.S.A., South Africa and Rhodesia the average value of (log.) U.S. 67$/km.2 for the states of the U.S.A. and South Africa are similar ($55,176 U.S.$67/km.2 and $52,538/km.2 respectively); whereas, Rhodesia is relatively underdeveloped (10,301 U.S.67$/km.2). On the other hand if the individual commodities are used as a basis for comparison, the U.S.A. shows the greatest diversity (67 commodities out of a possible total of 75) with South Africa next (50 commodities) and Rhodesia last with only 26 commodities. Since it is known that area and value are not simply related perhaps diversity is directly related to area. Again the kinds of commodities which have contributed the greatest value to the totals differs, with fuels (petroleum, coal and natural gas) predominating in the U.S.A. totals; whereas, South Africa and Rhodesia obtain their greatest contributions from gold, diamonds (S. Africa) coal and asbestos. In each case the greatest value of resources is produced from sedimentary rocks. As a somewhat different kind of example, consider a single resource (petroleum, the most valuable in the U.S.A.) over a large area (number of sampling units) the U.S.A. by state. Furthermore, assume that the model frequency distribution of the amount of petroleum (tonnes/km.2) is log normal. Then the present production fails to match the model first because 17 states (34% out of 50) have not produced petroleum. Of the remaining 33 states, Louisiana has produced the most (15,177 tonnes/km.2) and the frequency histogram is still skew. A spatial analysis of the distribution of the amount of petroleum by state shows that the samples (i.e., states) are not random; the non-producers and producers tend to cluster. It remains to be seen if this is indeed a true representation of the incidence of petroleum or is a function of the exploration philosophy currently in vogue.

The dressing-works of the St. Joseph Lead Company were destroyed by fire, February 26th, 1883. Within about four months, or on July 5th, 1883, the new mill, with a capacity of 500 tons per day, was built and in active operation. The capacity of the new mill has since been increased to 800 tons per day. The old mill was built in 1867, by Mr. C. B. Parsons, the present superintendent. It was a curious rambling old structure, which had grown with the demands of the business; a few jigs having been added in one place, a table or two in another and wings and sheds added to the main buildings, from time to time, as it was found necessary to increase the efficiency or the capacity of the mill. The old mill was, moreover, a most interesting place to the student, a perfect "museum of ore-dressing." Nearly every form of dressing apparatus known to the art had, at one time or another, found a place under its roof, jigs of many kinds, concave, convex, side-bump and stationary tables, tyes, buddles, dolly-tubs, etc., etc. The method of dressing followed in the main the lines of English practice, but with many modifications, both in the machinery and the methods of working, due to the inventive genius of Mr. Parsons. Environmental constraints can both delay and raise the cost of a major plant addition, often requiring a complete reevaluation of the plant site and the proposed project. In this case history, steps are presented which were followed in applying for environmental permits for a major addition to a lime plant. Methods are described for determining expected emission increases and for selecting the best control technology for each source. The description progresses through pre-application conferences with control agencies, the formal application procedure, computer modeling the air quality impact, and the methods followed in obtaining a favorable determination.

IN connection with certain coöperative work carried on between the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the U. S. Geological Survey during the year 1918, it was the writers' privilege to make metallographic examinations of a great many test bars and other pieces of nickel-steel gun forgings. The material studied came from many different steel plants throughout the country and consisted both of forgings that had been accepted by the Ordnance Department and those that had failed to pass the specified physical tests. In general, these tests require a minimum tensile strength of 95,000 lb. (42,091 kg.), an elastic limit of 65,000 lb. (29,483 kg.), an 18 per cent. elongation, and a 30 per cent. reduction in area. An average chemical composition of the steel studied is 0.38 per cent. carbon and 2.9 per cent. nickel. The steel was of both basic electric and basic open-hearth manufacture. The object of the metallographic work was two-fold: to assist in detecting defects in the steel and, if possible, to suggest remedies for the same; and to obtain as much information as possible in regard to the relation of the microstructure of the metal to its physical properties. The greater part of the investigation was devoted to defective metal that failed to pass the ordnance specifications. Many types and kinds of more or less serious defects thus came under observation, but most of these were due to the attempts by the manufacturer to meet the enormous demand for ordnance steel with more or less inadequate equipment, and were soon remedied. Two defects, the so-called "flakes" or "snowflakes" and a certain "fibrous" or "woody" fracture, were encountered so frequently and were so disastrous to the steel that the greater part of the study was devoted to them. THE Mather mine, of the Negaunee Mine Co., is within the limits of the City of Ishpeming, on the Marquette iron- range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is named for William G. Mather, who has served as President, and Chairman of the Board, of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. for well over 50 years. The property comprises nearly the square mile of section 2, T.47 N. R.27 W., which, except for 20 acres in the northeast corner, was leased by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to the Negaunee company. The latter is a partnership of Cleveland-Cliffs and the Bethlehem Steel Co., organized to equip the property, retaining Cliffs in charge as operator. Shipments of ore from this area are mainly through Marquette, which is 16 miles to the northeast on Lake Superior, or through Escanaba, a Lake Michigan port, 65 miles to the south. Cleveland-Cliffs, in 1943, operated 12 mines in the Lake Superior district, with shipments of 6,635,576 tons for the year. GEOLOGY The north footwall of the Marquette Range synclinorium outcrops near the north line of sec. 2, the iron formation dipping to the south at an angle of about 40º. The south side of the trough reappears at a distance of 4 ½ miles on sec. 26 and the surface geology between shows iron formation or intrusive diorites. The latter are harder than most phases of the iron formation and, as a result of glacial action, appear as buttes or low-lying hills. The general elevation of sec. 2 is about 1450 ft. above sea level, or 850ft. above Lake Superior, and the higher diorite outcroppings about 1600 ft. above sea level. The geological structure has been complicated by a series of major and minor faults, one of which may be illustrated by the diorite sheet, which tilts south with the iron formation in the north half of the section and then reappears near the center to repeat this sequence. Sectionally the geological series includes a nearly eroded capping of Goodrich quartzite followed by the considerable thickness of Negaunee iron formation, which is cut by intrusive dikes or diorite sheets, and underlain by the Siamo slates grading into quartzites. The ore deposits occur mainly in troughs formed by the intersection of impervious dikes and the footwall slate, but include locally enriched lenses or bands in the iron formation and also interbedded with the Siamo slate. The ore is a soft red hematite with an indicated dried analysis from the surface drilling to date of 61.50 per cent Fe, 0.134 per cent P, 5.40 per cent Si, 2.87 per cent Al and 0.015 per cent S. Since 1933, the Coal Mine Rating Schedule in Pennsylvania has provided credits in the Workmen's Compensation insurance premium rates for the use of safety hats, goggles and shoes. In that year, the worth of such protective clothing had just been well established and satisfactory articles were being made by a number of manufacturers. Standards for these three items of safety clothing' were written in the Rating Schedule and have been little changed through the years. The credit in the premium rate for a bituminous mine is $0.14 for hats, $o.08 for goggles, $o.08 for shoes. In order to earn such credit, it is necessary that all the employees in the particular mine be equipped with safety hats, goggles or shoes, as the case may be. In fact, it is not unusual for mines to qualify in all three categories, thus earning a rate reduction of $o.30 per $100 of payroll. These credits have been a decided stimulus to the use of safety clothing, and at present insured bituminous mines are credited as follows: Hats........ 63 per cent, or 22,600 employees Goggles..... 28 per cent, or 10,000 employees Shoes....... 44 per cent, or 15,800 employees Of course, many other employees wear these protective articles but they are in mines that are not fully equipped and so are not given the rate credit. The growth in use of this equipment has not been spectacular but it has been steady, as shown in Table I. An interesting thing about this is that it covers virtually all of the small and medium-sized bitumi- nous mine operations in Pennsylvania. A number of large operations are included, but many large mines are self-insured. It is difficult to keep alive interest in safety work in the smaller mines: first, because employment of safety engineers is out of the question and the one or several mine officials employed are often concerned only with production; second, because the life of many small mines is brief, so that safe conditions although established do not last long. Conditions as to safety in mines of this class rest chiefly with inspectors of state mine departments and of casualty insurance companies.
