On Sept. 4, 1914, Mine No. 1 of the Union Coal Co., Adamson, Oklahoma, suddenly caved, entombing thirteen miners whose bodies were never recovered. The seam of coal mined, the Lower Hartshorne, averaged 5 ft. in thickness and dipped at an angle varying from 22" to 30n. The strata overlying the coal seam were sandstones and shales. The mine was worked by the pillar-and-room method, the rooms being driven directly up the dip of the seam. All coal was blasted off the solid. Rooms were turned on short centers and room pillars were thin and irregular, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the form; showing the mine workings. Some cracks had been observed on the surface, it is said, at least a month before the squeeze occurred, but the collapse of the mine workings came very suddenly. As is usual when squeezes occur on such steep dips and the pillars fail, the crush progressed rapidly down the dip until it reached solid coal; there was a line of break, or draw, over in the solid coal. Several well-defined cracks appeared on the surface, after the mine had squeezed, but there was no appreciable subsidence of the surface, the weight seemed to be thrown entirely to the dip. About one year after the squeeze, and after the workings of the adjoining mine, NO. 4, had been retimbered and made safe, the writer inspected the tenth north (right) entry, or lift, off of No. 4 slope, which was below and fairly near the lowest caved portion of mine No. 1. The roof shale was composed of thin layers, which had been bent in somewhat the same manner as the leaves of a book having flexible covers are bent when the book is folded or rolled up in the hands. Though the mine workings are immediately beneath the streets and buildings of the mining town of Adamson, business was not disturbed by the squeeze, so far as any subsidence of the surface was concerned. No surface monuments were available and no elevations were taken, but the mine workings had been accurately surveyed and traversed, and the streets of the town overlying the mine workings had been carefully platted on the mine map, so that it was possible to locate accurately the cracks on the surface.

ALMOST every metallurgist who has given the Howe Memorial Lecture has had a personal contact with the distinguished gentleman to whose honor this hour is devoted. Unfortunately for me, such personal contacts were not possible. However, in the preparation of a thesis on the open-hearth process, one of my earliest tasks was to make a survey of the literature, and it was from Professor Howe's Metallurgy of Iron and Steel that I drew a number of references to previous work which formed the foundation for my reading. In his volume there is such a complete exposition of the then current thought on the subject of slags and on their role in the elimination of phosphorus from steel that I feel no hesitation in discussing in this Howe Lecture the subject of "Slag Control." In the present era of close specification, the drive for uniformity of product, and the close inspection of the product and of the cost sheet, the utmost efforts must be made to control the steelmaking variables to the best advantage of the steel producer. One of the major variables is the slag in the furnace and its effect upon the composition and quality of the metal. What advantages are to be gained from slag control? In the broad sense the advantages must be tremendous, because the very foundations of good steel melting are based on "shaping up" the slag to a point where, with proper temperature, the heat is ready for the final additions. Every melter works toward these ends through his experience with innumerable heats of steel. The elimination of undesirable constituents such as phosphorus and sulphur is entirely a matter of slag composition and physical nature, a point well known for over half a century. The role played by the slag in assisting in proper heat transfer from roof and flame to the steel has been equally well known. In more recent years there has come the problem of oxygen control in the more accurate gaug-ing of additions for making high-grade rimmed steel for the new strip mills, and in the deoxidizing additions for grain-size control and cleanli-ness of forging steels, both carbon and alloy. In this problem the oxidiz-ing characteristics of the slag are of prime importance.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF CLASSIFICATION WHAT is the use of a classification of mineral deposits? From the days of Agricola, the founder of the science of ore deposits, successive authors on the subject have attempted classifications, none of which have attained unanimous indorsement of miners, engineers, or geologists. The miner and engineer naturally have little regard for a classification that does not help them to find ore. Mining geologists may share this feeling, and deplore the overemphasis that may be placed on classification by their academic brothers. Apparent effects of such overemphasis may be reflected by students or new graduates who have grown to think that each deposit must fit perfectly into some pigeonhole of the more or less arbitrary scheme that has been drilled into them. Diversity in mineral deposits as in other natural phenomena, however, is too great to be fully expressed in the usual tabular classification, and experience is essential for the appreciation of the value or usefulness of a classification. The succession of classifications has closely followed the growth of the science of mineral deposits and reflects that growth, as well perhaps as the limited or comprehensive viewpoint of each proponent. The earliest classifications were based on metal content, and were superseded by those based mainly on form of deposit. Source of materials also became a basis, and was followed by physical and chemical conditions and processes. In spite of this development it is interesting to note that in many of the latest reports on mining regions the authors adopt special classifications suited for their particular districts. Some of these, like the earliest classifications, are based primarily on metal content, and others are most conveniently based on form, and it may be convenient to modify these by reference to source of material or temperature of deposition. Some, including the writers, after noting these different usages, have refused to worry much over classification as an ultimate objective, but,

The purpose of this study is to present the results of a detailed survey of the financial and operating aspects of 30 oil companies comprising a major sample of the American petroleum industry. This review supplements a previous paper entitled "Capital Flow and Capital Formation in the Petroleum Industry, 1934-1941,"a and deals not only with a longer period but also gives new and more revealing analyses of the capital movements and characteristics. The data are gathered from published financial statements of the companies, especially the annual reports to stockholders and Form 10-K to the Securities and Exchange Commission, supplemented by confidential information. The 30 oil companies covered by this study are listed on the leading stock exchanges and for the purpose of analysis are grouped as follows: 9 companiesb engaged principally in crude production, 4 companiesc with production averaging in excess of refinery requirements, and 17 companiesd with refinery throughput in excess of crude production. These samples are sufficiently broad and representative to constitute norms against which individual company performances may be profitably compared. The 30 companies in 1942 produced 54 per cent of the Nation's total output of crude oil and refined 79 per cent of the country's crude run to stills. The financial data apply predominantly to the domestic oil business, although 15 of the companies have investments and operate facilities in foreign countries. The net value of these foreign holdings amounted to 724 million dollars, or 12 per cent, of the combined net assets of the 30 oil companies at December 31, 1942.

(written discussion).—It seems to me that thc young man must first be absolutely sure that the work he has taken up is to his liking and then I would advise that he get into the practical end of it and learn as much about it as he can as fast as he can. For instance, in the refinery business the college man, graduated in chemical engineering, should ground himself by going through the various departments in a refinery and working in them until he is thoroughly familiar with the operating problems. In a short time he would be able to apply many things which appear in the abstract form in his college work and this would opcn up an opportunity for him to capitalize on them, promoting his own interest. I do not criticize the present-day college men as a class, but I have found that many of them come into your plant with the idea that mere possession of a diploma should insure rapid promotion; in a short time they are impatient and usually leave. We have found in employing men that the single attribute most difficult to find in them is a lot of energy and whole-hearted interest in the work at hand, and it seems to me that if a man combines these with a careful technical training he should be fairly well equipped to gamble on his future. They must learn that the biggest satisfaction to be gained in life is in their work. Procedure for Attaining Objective of Young Petroleum Engineer H. B. Fell,+ Ardmore, Okla. (written discussion).—Of course, the first thing to be ronsidered in any proposition is the ultimate objective that is desired to be attained. 1 presume that the desired objective of most of the young men graduating in petroleum engineering will be that of chief executive of one of the companies in the petroleum industry, or one of the allied industries, or to become an independent oil producer, or oil refiner, or possibly an oil distributor. The next phase then to be considered is the procedure which should most logically be followed to attain the objeckive of the indivitlual, since in these cases these young men will have been trained in a course in petroleum engineering and it would logically be presumed that the attainment of their objective should be through the operating end of the branch of the business with which they are connected. The operating end is, of course, the department of each branch of the business that develops the resources, or refines the products, or distributes the products, from which the profits are derived, and is a part of any business which is filled with enough interesting work to appease the desires of the most ambitious young men. In order to get the best possible training it would appear to me that the place for a young man to start after graduation would be at the bottom of that branch of the industry which he expects to follow. For example, if he is going in the producing end he can gct no better training than is secured by starting as a roustabout in the ficltl, where he romes in constant rontact with the character of work that is necessary

The effects of temperature, grain size, and magnesium content on the strength and ductility of cadmium were studied in the range -269° to 23 °C. A sharp drop in ductility between -140° and -190°C marked a transition in fracture mode from ductile shear to inter gvanular fracture. The addition of up to 15.35 wt pct Mg in solid solution raised the transition temperature, and for two compositions produced basal cleavages. The relatively high ductility of unalloyed cadmium at cryogenic temperatures is attributed to temperature independence of the yield stress and the absence of dislocation locking. ALTHOUGH numerous studies have been made of the mechanical properties of cadmium single crystals,1-5 no comprehensive investigation of deformation and fracture in polycrystalline cadmium has been carried out. This investigation was initiated to determine the mechanisms of deformation and fracture in polycrystalline cadmium, and to attempt to correlate these mechanisms with the behavior of other metals of hexagonal close-packed structure. A second objective of this work was to determine whether the slip systems and mode of fracture of polycrystalline cadmium could be altered by reduction of the axial ratio, which is 1.886, through alloying. Dorn and co-workers' have been able to induce prismatic slip in magnesium through alloying to reduce the axial ratio. Single crystals of cadmium are so highly ductile that glide strains of 400 pct are observed at room temperature, and 80 pct at -269°c.l Failure in every reported case is by necking down and shearing off of the crystal. Cleavage in cadmium single crystals has never been observed. Magnusson and aldwin reported a ductile to brittle transition for polycrystalline cadmium at about —160 C for specimens tested at a strain rate of 0.05 in. per in. per min in tension. However, even at -196° substantial ductility was retained. The transition temperature was strain rate dependent, impact loading at 19,000 in. per in. per min raising the transition temperature to about -85°C while leaving the low temperature ductility unchanged. No information was given on microstructures or fracture mode, nor were stress-strain characteristics reported. In the present investigation, tensile tests were carried out on polycrystalline cadmium and solid solution Cd-Mg alloys to determine flow stresses, work-hardening behavior, fracture strength, and fracture ductility. Variables employed included temperature, alloy content (and c/a ratio), and grain size.Some compression data also have been obtained for comparison purposes. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Polycrystalline Cadmium. Two purities of cadmium were employed in this investigation. Cadmium of 99.95 pct purity was supplied by Belmont Smelting and Refining Co. Cadmium of 99.99+ pct purity was supplied by American Smelting and Refining Co. Threaded cylindrical tensile specimens were machined to give approximately a 1/2 in. long straight gage section with a reduced diameter of about 0.110 in. Specimens were heat treated in evacuated pyrex capsules in the range 140" to 290°C to produce desired grain sizes. All specimens were polished in a solution containing 320 g Cr03 and 20 g NaS04 in 1000 cc of H20. Occasionally this solution caused staining of the specimen, in which case a further polish with a solution of one part HN03 and two parts H202 in two parts ethyl alcohol was employed.' Tensile testing was carried out on a screw-driven Instron machine, at a constant rate of crosshead movement, which for most tests was 0.01 in. per in. per min. Load vs time, and therefore load vs total strain, were recorded. Temperatures from -196" to -40°C were obtained by passing nitrogen gas through a copper coil immersed in liquid nitrogen, and then feeding the gas into a jacket around the specimen. Tests at -269°C were carried out in a helium cryostat, at a crosshead rate of 0.1 in. per in. per min, with specimens of 1 in. gage length. Compression specimens were tested in a jig similar to one designed by ilman. The jig was mounted on the under side of the Instron crosshead. Load was transmitted by means of a rod connected to a movable part of the jig at one end, and the load cell at the other end. A downward movement of the crosshead applied a compressive load to the specimen.

The quasi-binary systems "VFe3"—VCo,—VNi,— "VCu3"and "TiFe3"—TiCo3,—TiNi3-"TiCu3"have been studied by a combination of microscopic and X-ray methods. Of the Phases encountered, eleven had close-packed ordered layer structures. Within each system, there is an approximately linear variation of the degree of hexagonality of the stacking arrangement with electron concentration, e/a. A study of eighty -four known examples of AB3 structures in transition metal alloys indicates that at e/a = 8.65 the ordered structure of the close -packed layers changes from "triangular" (AuCu3 type) to "rectangular" (SbCu3 type). At e/a < 8.65, the slope of hexagonality us e/a line increases with the group number of the A component. An interesting series of close-packed ordered structures is known to exist at the composition AB3; however, their alloy chemistry has not yet been fully understood. Dwight and Beck1 observed a correlation between position of the components in the periodic table and the type of crystal structure of the binary AB2 structures formed by transition metals. No consistent effect due to atomic size was noted and they proposed that electron concentration* predominates in In the present paper, the AB3 structures are characterized by a symbol describing the stacking and a symbol specifying the ordered layer. The stacking symbol used was introduced by Zhdanov,7 and later used in the International Tables,8 and by Beck9 in his survey of possible layer stacking structures. Alternating positive and negative integers are used to represent the number of positive (e.g., in abcabc...) and negative (e.g., in cbacba...) stacking sequences. T denotes the triangular ordering found in close-packed planes of the AuCu3 structure and R the rectangular ordering found in close-packed planes of the SbCu3 structure, Figs. 3(a) and (b). The present structure symbols are listed in Table I alongside the prototypes, where known, and other structural characteristics of AB3 phases found in the present investigation. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were metals of 99.9+ purity. The alloys were prepared by arc melting under argon atmosphere using a nonconsumable tungsten electrode and water-cooled copper hearth. The total weight loss upon melting and subsequent annealing was always less than 0.5 pct and hence the alloys will be referred to by their intended (unanalyzed) compositions. The alloys were homogenized and annealed at suitable temperatures in the range 750" to 1200°C, the annealing periods varying from 3 days at 1200°C to 10 days at 750°C. The heat treatments were carried out in sealed silica capsules under argon atmosphere and with a molybdenum foil cover between the alloy and the walls of the capsule. The quenched alloys were microscopically examined and reduced to powder by crushing or filing. The powders were, whenever necessary, given a stress-relieving anneal at the original annealing temperature. X-ray powder patterns were obtained with an asymmetrical focusing camera, a Guinier-deWolff focusing camera, or a Debye-Scherrer camera. Cr, Co, or Cu radiations were used. In some cases, to ensure the minimum degree of contamination, the deeply etched specimens were mounted in the asymmetrical focusing camera to obtain an X-ray pattern. Internal silicon standards were employed for lattice parameter determinations. The intensity calculations were made by using a Fortran IV program

INTRODUCTION The Endako deposit was first explored in 1926, but development waited until the early nineteen sixties. It first came under the control of Placer Development in 1963, and early in 1964 a decision to bring it into production was reached. The deposit is located near the geographic center of British Columbia, and is served by an east-west communication system including a paved highway, mainline railway and good telephone, teletype, and computer facilities. The plant area is shown in Figure 1. The operation is known as the Endako Mines Division of Canex Placer Limited of Vancouver. First production was achieved in June, 1965, at a nominal rate of 10,000 tons per day, but it soon was closer to 15,000 tons per day. In 1967, two new grinding and flotation, sections brought capacity to the present rate of approximately 27,000 tons per day. With mill heads of around 0.15 percent MoS2, production is about 14,000,000 pounds of molybdenum per year. A flowsheet of the operation is given in Figure 2. A legend for this flowsheet is given in Table 1. Published ore reserves are estimated at 214,500,000 tons at an average grade of 0.143 percent MoS2. LOCATION AND HISTORY The Bunker Hill Mine is situated on the south side of the Coeur d’Alene River in Shoshone County of Northern Idaho near the City of Kellogg. Kellogg, the largest in the Coeur d’Alene District cities, is at an elevation of 2,300 feet and has a population of approximately 7,000 people. It can be reached by air, railway or highway. The history of the Bunker Hill Mine dates back to August 26, 1885, when Noah S . Kellogg found the outcrop of the Bunker Hill ore body on the hillside above the present town of Wardner, Idaho, in Milo Gulch. A small concentrator was erected in 1886. Before the railroad came, the mine output was transported by mule teams to the head of navigation on Coeur d’Alene Lake. After ten years of production, an interest was purchased in the Tacoma Smelter at Tacoma, Washington, to which the entire output was shipped. In 1916 and 1917 a modern lead smelting plant and refinery was erected and in 1927 and 1928, a modern Electrolytic Zinc Reduction Plant was built and put into operation by the Sullivan Mining Company which was 50% owned and now totally owned by The Bunker Hill Company. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The Bunker Hill ore bodies are found in gray and greenish gray quartzite and argillaceous quartzite of Precambrian age and are known as the Revett and St. Regis formations. Most of the ore bodies are found in the St. Regis formation.

Introduction. History and Production Statements. Southeast Missouri is the oldest of the large producing districts of the United States. The first recorded production from disseminated ores was in 1869, although for many years prior to that time lead had been milled from shallow pockets, and steady growth in production has been shown ever since, the greatest increases being during the past five years. The production by years for each of the operating companies from 1869 to 1907, inclusive, is given in Table I. In Table 11. is given the production by years from 1908 to 1912, inclusive, for the district as a whole, showing the tonnage of crude ore mined, yield in concentrates, average assay of concentrates; yield in metallic lead both per ton of crude ore and in total; also approximate value of the yearly production. It is interesting to note that the production for the 5-yr. period 1908 to 1912, inclusive, is practically equal to the total previous production, viz., the 39-yr. period 1869 to 1907, the summary being as follows:

Some time ago, at ameeting of the Institute Prof. J. W. Richards1 said, "I take exception to the statement that all the factors in the production of electrolytic zinc were known long ago.... There is possible in my opinion an improvement of perhaps 50 per cent. in the new electrolytic processes." An examination of the literature of the subject will show the justness of Professor Richards&apos; contention. The work of the earlier investigators was carried on in the shadow of difficulties that, today, are hardly more than memories. We seldom hear now of zinc sponge, that bête noir of the electrolytic-zinc pioneers. Zinc sponge was the name given to a peculiar, soft, black, non-adherent form of zinc deposit that was utterly useless for melting into ingot form. At the big plant at Cockle Creek, New South Wales, in 1897, Edgar Ashcroft2 said that the solution in the plant would suddenly, and without ascertainable cause, go&apos; "bad" and begin to deposit spongy zinc. The most delicate, even spectroscopic, methods of analysis were unable to detect any difference between "good" solution and "bad" solution; either form might change to the other on being kept for a while. When it is added that an outbreak of this insidious disease (which appeared to be infectious, or at least contagious) could be dealt with only by discarding the solution and washing out all tanks and pipe lines, some idea may be gathered of the troubles of the zinc electrometallurgist in what may be spoken of as the "sponge age" of electrolytic zinc. Thanks to the efforts of a number of investigators, we are today able to diagnose with considerable certitude the nature of the malady that puzzled Ashcroft and his co-workers. When mixed with common cast steel in quantities ranging from 11 to 131/2 per cent. and properly treated, manganese increases the ductility of the metal and adds greatly to its toughness and resistance to abrasive action, which properties comprise the distinctive characteristics that make manganese steel so valuable for many purposes at the present time.. * At present the manganese-steel foundries of this country have an annual capacity of about 60,000 tons and most of the growth has occurred within the past 10 years. In the early days of the industry it was impracticable to make manganese castings weighing over a few thousand pounds, but at present crusher heads, rolling-mill pinions, and similar castings weighing up to 30,000 Ib. each are produced, and it does not appear that the limit of weight has been reached by a considerable margin. Manganese steel is similar in analysis to ordinary first-class converter metal except that it is high in carbon and contains from 11 to 13.5 per cent. of manganese. From one standpoint manganese steel is similar to malleable iron in that the casting as it comes out of the sand is hard and brittle and must be made ductile by a heat-treating process. The heat treatment is an essential part of the process of making manganese-steel castings and must be properly carried out to secure satisfactory results. The necessity for heat treatment limits the thickness of sections which may be made of manganese steel. Originally the annealing depth was comparatively small, but researches carried on during the past few years have resulted in an increase in the thickness of section up to 51/2 in., which it is possible to treat successfully. Large castings are cored out to a minimum thickness of 51/2 in., thus not only eliminating some of the internal stresses which are invariably set up in a very thick casting, but also reducing the weight and inertia of the piece, an important consideration if the casting is to be a moving part in a machine. At the same time, the thickness of 51/2 in. is sufficient to permit the use of manganese steel for the heaviest classes of machinery.

THE flotative properties of the principal minerals in Michigan&apos;s potential iron ores have been investigated to develop methods of bene-ficiation for the ores. One of these minerals, magnetite, is of considerable importance as a source of iron. Study of its flotation was similar to that of hematite1, another iron mineral in these potential ores. The present research consisted essentially of: (1) a survey of the literature on mag-netite flotation, (2) the preparation of pure magnetite, (3) the develop-ment of laboratory procedure and (4) flotation experimentation. Literature an Magnetite Flotation.-For the purpose of this discussion, the results of previous work on the flotation of magnetite can be sum-marized as follows. The mineral has been floated with pine oil2, and it has also been separated from synthetic mixtures with silicates by the use of the same reagent2. Magnetite and apatite in iron-ore slimes have been separated by flotation of apatite with sodium palmitate3. These data were utilized in the present investigation. Preparation of Magnetite.-The pure mineral was prepared from the magnetic-separator concentrate of an iron ore (obtained from the Wither-bee Sherman Corporation, Port Henry, N. Y.). This concentrate was slowly comminuted with laboratory rolls and pulverizer to pass 65 mesh and was then tabled several times. Tabling yielded a relatively coarse magnetite concentrate, tailing and slimes. The two latter materials were rejected insofar as the present work is concerned, and treatment of the magnetite (table concentrate) was continued by separating it into -65 + 200 and -200-mesh sizes. Separation of the sizes was made by first dry screening and then wet screening. The -200-mesh material was rejected to eliminate possible introduction of error into flotation

The rolling texture transition in copper as a function of deformation temperature is found to be quite similar to that in high-purity silver. The ordinary copper type texture changes gradually to the brass type, accompanied by an increase in the stacking fault frequency, as the temperature of deformation decreases. The rolling textures obtained at low temperatures and the corresponding annealing textures compare remarkably well with the ordinary rolling and annealing textures of low-zinc brasses. Furthermore, it is also found that the observed stacking fault energies of copper specimens deformed at low temperatures correspond closely with those of low-zinc brasses, as deduced from measurements of the dislocation nodes. These results are consistent with the idea that texture transition may be significantly dependent on the stacking fault energy. It was shown in a series of previous publications1"3 that the rolling texture of high-purity silver changes gradually from the common silver type (or the brass type) to the copper type* with increasing temperature *The silver or brass type rolling textures are commonly described as (110)[112],4,5 whereas the copper type rolling textures are mainly (123) [a121 and (146)[211].5 Other ideal orientations have been used by various investigators for the copper type rolling textures, but the actual difference among these ideal orientations is rather small. of deformation, and that such texture transition can be correlated with the change in stacking fault frequency as a function of rolling temperature. Furthermore, it was shown that the formation of annealing textures in high-purity silver from the various rolling textures obtained during the course of texture transition depends entirely upon the deformation texture. From a common silver type or brass type rolling texture (such as produced by rolling at 0" or at 50° C) the recrystallization texture is mainly (120)[211], which is quite different from the recrystallization texture of brass.* However, for both ma- terials the orientation relationship between the rolling texture and the recrystallization texture can be expressed in terms of similar rotations around [Ill.] axes of approximately 30 or 35 deg. They differ in that the [Ill] rotational axes are different. In the case of high-purity silver, the axes of rotation are the two (111) poles near the plane normal of the deformed specimen with a (11l)[112] type rolling texture, whereas in brass, they are the (111) poles near the direction of rolling. For high-purity silver with a predominantly copper type rolling texture (such as produced by rolling at 150° or 200°C) the recrystallization texture is mainly (100)[001], or the cube texture, plus its twin orientations. It was shown previously6 that such reorientation observed in copper or aluminum can be described as [Ill] rotations of 30 to 40 deg. THE catenary system of line construction possesses so many desirable characteristics from the operating standpoint that it has wide application for all types of electric traction. Many steam roads are electrifying sections of their lines, and in most cases are operating both steam and electric locomotives over the same track. This&apos; means that the overhead catenary system is subjected to the severe corrosive action of locomotive smoke, and data concerning the resistance of various alloys to this form of corrosion are very desirable from every point of view. Reliable and specific information and data on the subject of corrosion due to steam and smoke from locomotives are extremely meager and, on this account, extensive service tests, together with accelerated tests, have been made on a number of commercial metals and alloys. The observations and data recorded in this paper are the result of a, preliminary test which was started in 1923 and which has been carried on to the present time. The recognition of the need for even more detailed and accurate data has resulted in the undertaking of another test which has been in progress for about a year. The result of this test will be published in due course. Some years ago The Ohio Brass Co. was asked by one of the large steam railroad companies to furnish data on construction details for a catenary system which it was considering for one of its divisions. The selection of, materials which would give the necessary physical characteristics as well as withstand the severe corrosive action of locomotive gases caused electrical railroad engineers considerable concern. At that time, there were available no specific or authentic data on these important questions: no systematic investigation of the problem appeared to have been made, even though its importance was generally recognized. Such observations as had been made were crude in that they had been limited largely to visual inspection which too frequently is most misleading. However, the scattered information which was collected gave important clues as to how best to start an investigation.

THAT Illinois is an important mineral producing state is well known. A value of over $237,000,000 for the mineral products in 1926 indicates the magnitude of the industries. Coal mining is the largest mineral industry, and the value of its product was about 63 per cent of the total mineral production of the state. Oil and gas constituted about 8 per cent and the non-metallic minerals about 29 per cent. This 29 per cent represents the production of a varied group of mineral industries of wide geographic distribution through the state.

An orientation survey was conducted over a known disseminated copper deposit and a Au-Cu vein deposit and employed geological, geophysical, and geochemical methods. Geochemical techniques proved the most effective and economical means of locating and defining areas underlain by these types of mineralization. Six additional, widely separated occurrences were also investigated and mineralization was confirmed by determination of cold-extractable copper in stream sediments. The length of anomalous drainage varies from several to 16 km and depends on the type and tenor of mineralization. Despite generally marked relief and extreme physical and chemical weathering, cold-extractable copper anomalies in soils appear to reflect closely variations in the ore mineral content of immediately underlying rocks. Threshold values vary with local geological conditions and type and grade of mineralization. Significant thresholds in stream sediments are about 65 ppm and 10 ppm for cold-extractable copper in disseminated and vein copper occurrences respectively. Similar differences are encountered in soils. This necessitates the use of a scale of threshold values at progressive stages in each exploration program. Dis-seminated copper occurrences are presently the major source of mineral production m the Philippines. Much potentially productive ground remains to be investigated and applied geochemistry appears to offer the best available approach. The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Program (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature and involved both orientation and exploration. During approximately six weeks, an orientation survey, involving geological mapping, geophysical surveying and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Santo Nino (Fig. 1). This study demonstrated the economic and technical feasibility of geochemical ptospecting, relative to the other methods tested, for the location and delineation of a typical disseminated copper occurrence characteristic of those that represent the major source of metal in the Philippines.&apos; Geochemical techniques, similar to those tested at Santo Nino, were then applied in a second orientation study of a vein occurrence at Suyoc (Fig. 1). The results of these two orientation studies suggest that, in reconnaissance work in this region, stream sediment analyses, combined with the determination of pH in the same streams, can be used to indicate areas underlain by rock containing anomalous concentrations of copper, whether it occurs in the large tonnage, low grade, disseminated deposits or in the comparatively small tonnage, higher grade, gold vein occurrences. Furthermore, the orientation surveys demonstrate that soil sampling and analysis serve effectively to outline more closely the mineralized zones within the generally anomalous areas identified from the stream reconnaissance. To further test the methods selected from the two earlier trials, six additional, widely separated prospects were investigated. The geological and geochem-
