This report is the 26th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations and the 8th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.1 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1961, and it provides references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1961 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned may be obtained by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Bibliography; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications. The coal program of the Bureau of Mines extends over the wide range of applied and theoretical studies indicated by the table of contents of this report. Applied studies are conducted in connection with the development and evaluation of new mining techniques, and the effective processing and utilization of coal and coal products. Analyses of coal, technical advice, and other assistance to Federal agencies in connection with fuel and boiler-water problems, and health and safety activities are among the practical services handled by the Bureau, Fundamental research such as that on coal structure and on the properties of coal is conducted because it will, over a period of the, furnish an increasing general knowledge about coal; scientists and engineers may use this knowledge in solving problems in mining and utilization of

The cave propagation behaviour of a jointed rock mass is strongly governed by the unique nature of joints and discontinuities, together with the intact strength of rock bridges that make up the rock fabric. A discrete finite difference (DFD) modelling technique has been developed to allow for the detailed consideration of the rock mass structural fabric at many scales and through many different stress paths that can be used for complex mine-scale analysis. The DFD methodology uses interfaces to explicitly represent large-scale structures and ubiquitous joints embedded within the simulated rock mass matrix to characterise intermediate structures. Through simulated testing of DFD materials, properties such as strength anisotropy and scale effects can be obtained. The search for precious metals opened up the American West. And Nevada was right in the heart of this development. In the mid-19th century, prospectors seeking gold roamed the hills of Nevada and discovered the ComstockLode. The development of this huge silver and gold deposit began in1859 and was responsible for Nevada’s early entry to statehood. Mining was Nevada’s first industry. In more recent years, the Nevada mining industry has led the nation in gold, silver and barite production. Nevada also produces many other minerals. These include aggregates, clays, copper, diatomite, dolomite, gypsum, lime and limestone, lithium and magnesium compounds, perlite, salt and silica. Even today, Nevada’s mining industry continues to be a major economic force in the state. The mining industry has made more than $10 billion in capital investments in Nevada since 1985. And the value of Nevada’s mineral production last year was about $2.7 billion.

The Olmsted Locks and Dam project is located on the Ohio River approximately 16.5 miles upstream of its confluence with the Mississippi River. It consists of twin 1200 ft. locks with floating and fixed approach walls, five 110 ft. wide tainter gate bays, a 1400 ft. wide navigable pass boat operated wicket gate section, and a 400-ft. section of fixed weir (Fig. 1). The project will have a total cost over 1.0 billion dollars, and as such is one of the largest civil works project underway in the Corps of Engineers.

Other Federal agencies have been coming to the Bureau of Mines for help with the purchase and utilization of fuel, largely coal, almost since the day the Bureau was created in 1910. The requests covered a wide range of fuel- economy problems and included boiler-water treatment after it became apparent that water-formed deposits on heating surfaces acted as insulators, decreasing heat transfer and impairing fuel efficiency. Dr. Ralph E. Hall, a Bureau of Mines physical chemist determined the 3 reactions that cause adhering scale to form in boilers (7)2 and went on to introduce scientific principles into water treatment for scale prevention (8). Widespread publicity of these achievements increased the requests for help from Federal steam-generating plants. Since no other Federal agency (even those which were more directly concerned with testing water) wanted to provide boiler-feedwater service, the Bureau decided to continue to give requested help to Federal agencies, Later, the Congress endorsed such agency cooperation as an economy measure,

Keywords: drying, steam drying, concentrates, copper, lead During the past twenty years steam drying has become a prominent technology for drying of non-ferrous metals concentrate. This is mainly because of its low energy consumption and very low emissions. The first applications of significant capacity were stationary steam dryers, which however, faced severe challenges in maintenance costs and availability. That technology was soon replaced by Kumera?s rotary steam drying technology, which has been the dominant technology in new dryer installations world-wide for the past ten years, ever since the first installation in Hamburg in 1999. There are ten Kumera steam dryers in operation today and five more to be commissioned during 2011. Practically every dryer is different owing to continuous development, new innovations and operational experience with continuous feedback from the operators. Most significant improvements relate to capacity increase with the Kumera steam-dryer family, new feeder systems at the wet end, a completely new design of the dry material discharge with increased availability, heating element design and material selection, and control systems. This paper discusses the modifications and improvements introduced which have enabled the Kumera steam dryer to become the global leader in new dryer installations.

Determining the minimum amount of inert material that can be used between explosive columns is a complex problem. Using too little inert material can result in detonator/primer failure, either by sympathetic detonation of or failure to fire of the subsequent explosive column(s). Propagation type failure results when inert material length between charges is small enough that the subsequent (delayed) deck fires more or less instantly. In this situation, the primer, detonator, or bulk product is initiated by the shock wave from the earlier firing deck. This type of failure may be un-noticed until the vibration/airblast report is examined.

"The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) in downtown metropolitan San Francisco, California, is supported on a mat foundation. Although the mat foundation of the original museum was designed to accommodate a future expansion, the plans for expansion that developed in 2010 required a larger footprint to accommodate the new space requirements of the museum. The new, larger expansion was designed by lead architect Snohetta. It will be a tall 12-story, steel-framed building occupying an area that was once the eastern part of the existing museum as well as two adjacent and newly acquired parcels.As designed, the expansion includes a 30-foot-deep excavation which is surrounded by adjacent buildings and improvements. Because of variable subsurface conditions at the site, geotechnical challenges included mitigating anticipated differential settlement between the existing and new foundations, preventing overstressing of the existing mat foundation, controlling groundwater to prevent settlement of surrounding improvements, and providing temporary support of adjacent structures during excavation for the new basement.To address several of the geotechnical challenges, soil-cement mixed (SMX) ground improvement was recommended by Treadwell & Rollo. However, during contract negotiations and construction, the specialty contractor proposed using jet grouting as an alternative technique for ground improvement. The jet grouting approach was accepted in principal, but when implemented was only marginally successful. Accordingly, the contractor eventually installed SMX panels using a Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) machine. Because the CSM machine was a late arrival during construction, the contractor was not able to take advantage of the ground-improvement technique to install many of the shoring elements that we had originally recommended (such as the cut-off shoring wall). In the end, SMX panels were installed as ground-improvement beneath the new mat foundation to (1) reduce the potential for liquefaction in clean sand below the groundwater by providing increased rigidity to the soil, (2) reduce the potential for disturbing a weak underlying marsh deposit during construction, and (3) transfer vertical building loads to a layer of underlying dense sand.This paper also discusses the quality control and quality assurance programs that were implemented to check that the ground-improvement techniques used were thorough and complete and provided the required strength to transfer the new foundation loads to the underlying strata."

Société le Nickel (SLN) exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, and the controls are extremely complex at all scales: lithology, oxidation-reduction conditions, mineralogy, and multivariate geochemistry. In that context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: ? Support effect: the exploration data-set can only warrant the estimation of large panels 20×20×3 m3, which are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5×5×3 m3 ? Information effect: the selection at production stage uses estimates based on information much denser than that available for mine planning. The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for any estimation process (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at mining stage (i.e. the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria involve not only Ni grades but also other constituents such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, and SiO2. The solution presented in this paper is the construction of a platform of SMU multivariate simulations in the saprolitic horizon, together with efficient post-processing aimed at producing the multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model (DGM), the validity of which is tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process at the mining stage, by offering the ability to simulate in each block a composite value located at random within the block. Finally, the paper presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream phases (reserve optimization, mine sequencing) of the project. The implementation presented here is for the first generation of the Scenario Reduction plugin built in Isatis software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set is based on Ni quantities only. Research is under way to adapt the measure to the true multivariate nature of the problem.

LTl’s MapStar LPS (laser positioning system) utilize both tripod mounted and hand held reflectorless distance meters. These are eye safe, easy-to-use, and specifically designed to endure the harsh environment characteristic to the mining, quarry and explosives industries. Survey data collected by the systems is digitally stored in a ruggedized data collector and then processed with a specialized, interactive software program, which can be run on any standard PC. Win Prof, the Windows-based analytical software package is used to reduce the data for generating bench face profiles, surfaces, volumes, estimating true burdens and mining ratio calculations. In addition, the software has many other built-in routines to calculate powder factors, toe shear, to map structural contacts and to predict the flyrock potential based on the Burden to Energy ratios. An extensive, built-in library of explosive’s data facilitates these calculations. It will also conform automatically to user-specified minimum and/or maximum burden in relation to the explosive energy, hole diameter and bench geometry - for both vertical and inclined holes. Numerical data can be represented in 2D or 3D to emphasize the hole-burden-face relationships.In this workshop, the MapStar LPS instruments and Win Prof analytical software will be thoroughly demonstrated. Demonstrations include equipment configuration, typical field setups and several effective survey procedures, including processing of some sample data.

The more than 40,000 mining industry professionals that are expected to attend the National Mining Association’s(NMA) MINExpo International2000 trade show and conference will be treated to the exhibition’s largest display ever. The exhibit is expected to cover more than 60,385 m2(650,000 sq ft) and feature more than 1,300 exhibitors. The event is set for Oct. 9-12, 2000 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. Richard L. Lawson, NMA’s president and chief executive officer, said, “MINExpo 2000 will showcase everything that mining is proudest of. This is the largest premier mining exposition in the world.” MINExpo is held every four years.

Conventional sampling methods are known to suffer from the variable loss of fine gold by elutriation. Freeze sampling yields representative and quantitative data that, when combined with information on the sedimentology of gravel-bed rivers, may facilitate the development of improved dispersion models for source detection. "Enterprises are faced with increasing economic competition and managers are obliged to look for methods that will ensure a competitive edge in their companies’ markets. These methods include managerial concepts that employ common sense and are low cost. One of these approaches is the KAIZEN methodology, of Japanese origin; kaizen means continuous improvement (CI) when translated. A mining company, despite some of its idiosyncrasies, is just an enterprise where the application of KAIZEN can be advantageous. The company investigated, OKD, is the only domestic producer of hard coal in the Czech Republic and operates four mines that produce 11 Mt of coal annually. The OKD management team opted for KAIZEN as their principal method of continuous quality improvement. This paper suggests ideas for development and application of processes that provide for continuing improvement of production and management. The authors have taken the OKD Company to be their benchmark in the field of mining activities. The paper also focuses on possible difficulties accompanying the introduction of CI sustainable methods. Three years of application of CI methods has increased the income of the company by almost US$38.1 million, which provides a strong argument for continued application."

Merensky Reef is mined extensively within the Bushveld Complex. In previously mined-out areas on the Merensky Reef horizon there are pillars, potholes and remnants that have not been mined. These unmined blocks of ground on the Merensky Reef horizon can influence the mining of the underlying UG2 Reef. The extent of the influence will depend on the size of unmined ground and the middling between the two reef horizons. This paper quantifies the influence of partially extracted Merensky Reef on mining of the UG2 Reef, and aims to provide recommendations for mining strategies, as well as regional and local support to achieve efficient and safe extraction of the UG2 Reef, for various middlings beneath the Merensky Reef horizon. In some cases it was found that relatively shallow UG2 Reef mining could encounter conditions similar to those experienced in deep and ultra-deep mining environments.

It is not the primary object of this paper to treat with the scheme of prospecting in detail, but it is considered that a brief description of the broad lines is necessary so that the significance of the points to be discussed later may be appreciated.The finding of payable gold reefs on the Bendigo field resolves itself into a two-fold problem, firstly the location of quartz bodies, and secondly the location of gold shoots in such bodies. The country rock of the field has been folded and faulted, and the occurrence of known reefs is associated with the fold axes and the faulting. The "lines" of the field are the anticlinal axes, and practically all known reefs are at or near centre country. Very little work has been done on the synclines, which may have some potential value.Quartz has been introduced along the fracture systems, and gives rise to the three main types of reef met with on the field, namely, the "back," which is similar to a bedded quartz reef and is formed along a bedding plane fault; the "saddle," which forms at the crest of the anticline and has the typical shape from which it takes its name; and "spurs," which are irregular masses of quartz, making off reefs of the first two types.As the fracturing throughout the field is widespread and fairly intense, the first problem, that of finqing quartz, is comparatively simple, and any regular system of blocking out the ground will be productive of quartz bodies.*Field Superintendent, Bendigo Mines Ltd. A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

Selection of resistance factors within Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) requires accurate assessment of uncertainty and bias in load and resistance. To date, many studies have focused predominantly on the assessment of uncertainty, while the potential for bias appears to be the dominant factor in design for consistent levels of reliability under a variety of situations. Bias comes from factors which have been ignored in design method development but significantly influence resistance when extrapolating from conditions typical of databases to those at a given site. Uncertainty and bias can be quantified as the coefficient of variation and mean (or median) of a data set, respectively, for statistical assessment of load and resistance factors. This paper first presents an overview of statistical assessment of resistance factors, and then discusses factors that influence uncertainty and bias when extrapolating to situations outside of conventional databases of driven pile axial capacity.
