Industrial engineering departments perform staff duties and are most effective when sincerely supported by management. In accordance with the needs and desires of the mining companies involved, various industrial engineering functions have been adopted widely at western metal mines during the period 1950-60. Newly organized departments usually conduct method and equipment studies, work-measurement programs, and establish and maintain production standards. Supervisor-training programs and courses are effective in showing the relationship between supervisory responsibility and the purpose for which industrial engineering is practiced. Industrial engineering staffs of western metal mines are composed predominantly of personnel from within the companies. Experienced industrial engineers, not necessarily experienced in mining, frequently are hired by a company to help establish the department. Management consultants frequently are called upon to advise management and instruct department personnel in industrial engineering practices. Some departments have developed satisfactory industrial engineering programs without benefit of formal industrial engineering training or advice.

The effectiveness of an industry?s safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and ?service" contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. There was little change during 1988 in the production of minerals in Burundi. The Government of Burundi, which banned all commercial mining operations in the country in 1979, lifted the ban on mining of alluvial gold deposits and started a program of small-scale artisan gold mining in October. Along with the legal mining of gold, licensed gold trading counters were established. Other mineral commodities produced were kaolin clay, lime, and peat. In compliance with the Government ban, the only mineral wealth exploited for commercial sale and export was alluvial gold. Through financial assistance from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), a study to inventory the country's mineral resources continued throughout the year. As part of this study, during the year, a West German company undertook a drilling program to further outline the nickel reserves of the Musongati area in central Burundi. Results of the work as of yearend were disappointing, with only 12 million tons of ore identified with better than 2% nickel content proven. Investigations also continued during the year regarding the centrally located deposits of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite. A Norwegian company contracted to prepare a prefeasibility study for developing the deposit. The British Sulphur Corp. Ltd. was nearing completion of its $1.2 million2 study of the phosphatic limestone deposit at Matongo-Bandaga at yearend. Ore reserves of about 17 million tons grading 11% phosphorus pentoxide (P2O3) had been identified. The phosphate zone overlies a carbonatite rock, which could provide the basis for a cement industry. Additional drilling was planned for 1984. Exploration for gold was underway in 19S3 in northern Burundi through UNDP funding. Several primary deposits of shallow semimassive sulfides with gold values ranging from traces to 11 grams per ton had been discovered. Vehicle vibration exposure has been linked to chronic back pain and low back symptoms among agricultural tractor drivers. The objectives of this study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) were to assess driver whole body vibration (WBV) exposures and recommend interventions to reduce the risk of back related injuries, particularly relative to vehicle jarring/jolting (the transient mechanical shock components of WBV). The methodology included collecting, from two independent samples, ?eld data and health and work history data of farm equipment operators. Data were collected during mowing, raking, baling, chiseling, tilling, and road travel for different model tractors. Spraying using a sprayer and shrub removal with a skid steer loader were also included. Based on ISO 2631 (1985), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, threshold limit values, presents 0.5 m/s2 as the action level recommended by the Commission of European Communities for overall weighted total RMS acceleration (vector sum for axes x, y, and z) [ACGIH, 2006. Threshold limit values and biological exposure indices. Cincinnati, OH]. WBV measured at the operator/seat interface exceeded this action level. The roughest rides and highest vector sum accelerations occurred with small utility tractor mowers (3.3 and 2.8 m/s2) and a skid steer loader (1.7 m/s2). Major ?ndings from health and work history data showed 96% of participants reported having to bend or twist their necks, although 24% reported neck symptoms. Sixty four percent of participating operators reported experiencing back symptoms (e.g., pain, aching, stiffness, etc.). Recommendations included: specifying a seat that ??better?? isolates operators from jars/jolts with new tractor purchases; maintaining the seat/seat suspension and replacing worn or damaged cushions with NIOSH tested viscoelastic foam padding; using larger diameter tires with radial ply instead of bias ply construction, particularly on small utility tractor mowers, to aid in attenuating ride ??roughness??; using a swivel seat to reduce the stress on the neck from bending or twisting; and improving efforts to educate owner/operators of the adverse effects of WBV exposures. Since the data presented in this paper were collected from two independent samples, the authors were unable to draw any correlations or etiological inferences from the study. However, results were compared and contrasted with other studies which included similar vibration measurements in agriculture.

The Belizean economy registered a modest real growth of 1.3% during 1981. The gross domestic product (GDP), based on current prim was $121 million' with an inflation-rate of 10%. The country received $19 million in economic aid during 1981. In early 1981, Belize'e four commercial banks raised the interest on deposits to 15% in an effort to curb capital outflow. During 1981, the financial situation deteriorated somewhat, particularly the balance of payments. For the year the total value of imports exceeded exports by almost $38 million, while the Government continued to maintain a fairly free trade policy. Import duties and term averaged about 8% on essential item and 40% on nonessential ones.

Provide optimum visibility of mining operations while maintaining protection and comfort for ma-chine operators. Approach Cabs and canopies with hydraulically powered variable-height control were developed for several machines and tested in underground mining operations. How It Works From his position in the cab, the operator can raise or lower the cab, selecting a height that offers either more visibility of the working place or greater clearance for tramming. The entire cab enclosure moves up and down on guide rollers that ride on a pair of rails, and is actuated by a hydraulic cylinder controlled from within the cab. Normal working heights, for each of the four different cabs developed, are with the cab bottom from 6 to 8 inches above the mine bottom. A typical range of elevation (excursion) afforded by this design is shown in Figure 1.

"ABSTRACTIn exothermic and endothermic catalytic reactions, control of the temperature is of utmost importance. Basic calculations are developed for determining catalyst volumes of various types of reactors that give particular temperature distributions, and the individual designs are compared.INTRODUCTIONA narrow range of permissible operating temperatures characterizes many, catalytic reactions, and yields of the desired product are reduced sharply if operating temperatures fall outside of this optimum range. In order to achieve close temperature control, reactors with internal heat exchange have been developed in which thin layers of catalyst are located between cooling surfaces.The temperature distribution for an exothermic reaction in such a thin catalyst layer is shown in figure 1. Reactive gases flow downward through the catalyst section, which is 2so wide. It is assumed that a constant amount of heat is generated per unit of bulk catalyst volume, and that this heat is entirely removed through the walls. Consequently, except for a short section at the entrance of the reactor, the heat of reaction is not available for raising the temperature of the gases. Thus, at all points equidistant from the axis, the temperature is the same throughout the entire reactor. At the middle of the gas stream, the temperature is designated as uo. Traveling radially from this point, the temperature decreases because of the removal of heat through the walls and reaches, in the vicinity of the cooling surface, the value u1. Over a relatively narrow zone of width, b, the temperature falls to the value u2 at the cooling surface. Because inadequate data are available on heat-transfer coefficients for a gas flowing through a porous bed, and also because the narrow zone, b, is probably without effect on the reaction by virtue of its low temperature, the temperature drop in this zone at the cooling wall was disregarded. The following calculations were made on the basis of the temperature drop (u0 - u1) resulting from heat conduction within the main body of the catalyst bed only."

The amount of airborne respirable dust generated from break- age of different coals varies widely. This research was conducted to identify the facets of airborne respirable dust liberation from the coal product. Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted on a range of low to high volatile bituminous coals to investigate the various factors influencing airborne respirable dust generation. Bituminous coal samples from 8 mines (5 U.S. and 3 Polish) were uniformly prepared and processed through a double roll crusher located in a low air velocity wind tunnel. Experimental factors studied included inherent coal seam constituents, specific energy of crushing, product size characteristics, dust cloud electrostatic field, and specific quantity of airborne respirable dust generated. The results of this investigation build upon previously published results, which indicated that a combination of several factors are associated with the generation of airborne respirable dust. One factor involved is the effect of coal rank, described by the inherent moist fuel ratio, on the product size characteristics, defined by Schuhmann size function parameters. However, since coals of high moist fuel ratio (high rank) are generally more extensively cleated, it is suggested in the present work that the degree of cleating is directly responsible for the quantity of respirable-sized particles produced in the crushed product material for eastern U.S. coals. This is implied by the relationship of ash content and at least one mineral constituent (pyrite, determined from pyritic sulfur analysis) to the percentage of airborne respirable dust. To validate this hypothesis, a description is offered that is based on known coal petrography. Another key factor is the effect of air dry loss moisture in the coal seam on the breakage-induced electrostatic field of airborne dust. The air dry loss moisture factor appears to control the amount of airborne respirable dust that is liberated from the product. The resultant effect of these factors is that different percentages of coal particles smaller than 10 µm are dispersed as airborne respirable dust with a well-defined peak in the normalized airborne respirable dust for a narrow range of air dry loss moisture - ash ratios. A clear delineation of coals, based on well-known proximate analysis characteristics, that generate the most respirable dust appears to be possible. In 1990, the Bureau of Mines (BOM) conducted a mineral investigation of the mines and prospects in the East Mojave National Scenic Area (EMNSA), San Bernardino County, California During field work, BOM identified 701 mines and prospects in EMNSA for which the geology, mineral resources, and mining history were compiled and summarized. Analytical results for 1,188 rock samples collected are tabulated. Total value of identified resources in EMNSA is $5.0 billion. Twenty-four mines and prospects were deemed profitable under current economic conditions. Development could generate considerable economic benefits to San Bernardino County. Potential economic benefits from mining the deposits were evaluated under the following access restrictions for EMNSA: 1) full access, 2) HR 3460, and 3) S 11/HR 780. Under the full access scenario, cumulative mine revenues are $3.0 billion, cumulative personal earnings at mines and supporting industries are $0.94 billion, and annual jobs at mines and supporting industries are 2,379. Under HR 3460, mine revenues, personal earnings, and annual jobs are $2.9 billion, $0.88 billion, and 2,165, respectively. Under S 11/HR 780, mine revenues, personal earnings, and annual jobs are $1.0 billion, $0.32 billion, and 936, respectively.

This dictionary is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the mining and mineral literature in the belief that it will fill a recognized need. Several attempts have been made over the years to revise Albert Fay's Glossary of the Mining and Mineral Industry which first appeared in December of 1918. Frank L. Hess of the Bureau of Mines worked on a revision, but his untimely death prevented its completion. Subsequently, the writer was employed to compile and edit this dictionary in cooperation with the technical staff of the Bureau of Mines. Fay's glossary contained about 18,000 terms with 27,000 definitions; the present compilation contains about 55,000 terms with approximately 150,000 definitions. These terms are of both a technical and local nature, and they apply to metal mining, coal mining, quarrying, geology, metallurgy, ceramics and clays, glassmaking, minerals and mineralogy, and general terminology. Petroleum, natural gas, and legal mining terminology, unless of a general nature, has been excluded, as has been foreign terminology where there is an English equivalent. Several thousand Spanish-American mining terms that appeared in Fay's compilation have been removed to make way for the thousands of new English terms that have evolved over the years. Those Spanish-American and Mexican terms still used in the Southwestern United States have been retained.

The domination of Bangladesh's mineral industry by natural gas was in for some possibly significant changes. A modest flow of crude oil was struck in a gas development well in the northeastern corner of the country. This was the first commercial flow of crude oil in Bangladesh. All crude oil was being imported, which cost a significant proportion of the nation's foreign exchange earnings. The development of an oilfield producing only a few thousand barrels per day would be a welcome help to the economy. Additional exploration at a 1985 coal discovery in the northwest indicated a considerable reserve of good-quality coal at a depth suitable for mining. If the coal is mined, it would be a boon to the local economy because natural gas was not available in the area.

"INTRODUCTION Slate has earned a high reputation as a roofing material, carefully selected and properly placed it is rainproof, attractive, and extraordinarily durable. Despite there qualities in its favor, the slate industry during the past 30 years has suffered marked reduction in volume of sales. An increase in building construction and general improvement in business will doubtless bring renewed activity, but considerable ground has to be recovered before the industry can become prosperous. Influences tending to dwarf this long-established industry producing materials of world-wide reputation are analyzed briefly in the following pages in the hope that they may be rectified.HISTORY OF SLATE PRODUCTIONFigure 1 shows graphically the rise and fall from year to year of sales of roofing slate since 1885. In quantity, the peak was reached in 1902, and the most serious decline was from 1912 to 1918, sales at the end of this 6-year period being only one third those at the beginning. Unlike most building materials, slate experienced only a slight recovery in volume of sales during the post-war period, 1920-29. The value closely parallels the volume up to the World War period. Subsequently, however, as unit values increased the aggregate value rose sharololy above the volume curve, attaining in 1928 the point reached in 1903, although the Lumber of squares sold was scarcely one third as great. The increased unit value was due partly to larger sales of heavy architectural grades."

"This repot continues the series of papers being prepared at the Southwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the department of mining and metallurgy, University of Arizona, on factors involved in the leaching of ores. A list of previous publications is given in the bibliography at the end of this paper.Four factors are essential to the leaching of any copper-bearing ore: (1) A solution that will attack the copper minerals must get into the body of the ore particles; (2) the copper minerals must be dissolved by the solution; (3) the solution containing the dissolved copper must find its way out of the voids of the rocks into the main solution; and (4) the copper in solution must be recovered by some means of precipitation.This paper considers the third step -- the extraction of the water-soluble copper. From leached ores. The usual commercial practice in leaching copper ores consists of: (1) Crushing the ore to pass through a screen with approximately one-quarter or one-third inch openings; (2) charging the crushed ore into a fat; (3) adding, usually by upward percolation, a solution that will attack the copper minerals; and (4) washing the copper-laden solutions out of the ore with solutions weaker in copper than the pregnant solution, and finally with water. A countercurrent system of leaching and washing is usually employed. In some plants the solutions are circulated during leaching and washing, and in others they are not. In some plants the wash solutions are added by upward percolation, while at Chuquicamata the so-called ""piston-displacement"" method of washing is employed.The following condensed resume of the leaching cycle of the plant of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is given to present to the reader a picture of the steps involved in a typical leaching cycle. This plant was recently described in detail.4 The ore, crushed to pass openings 11/2 inches in diameter, passes over a screen with ¼-inch openings. The undersize from the screen goes to a Dorr howl classifier that removes the primary slime from the circuit. The overflow from the classifier is treated in a slime-leaching plant. The oversize of the ¼-inch screen passes through rolls, where it is crushed to pass a 3/8-inchscreen. The undersize from the 3/8-inch screen join with the coarse material from the classifier, and the combined products become the feed to the leaching vats. There are 13 concrete lead-lined leaching vats. The complete leaching cycle is 13 days. Eight tanks are under acid-iron content at all times; three are being washed, one tank is being filled, and the one is being excavated. The electrolyzed solution from the tank house, to which amount of new acid has been added, is put on the oldest tank of ore under need This solution travels from tank to tank and finally emerges from the newest ore"

This report describes construction details and methods used in driving the 5490 tunnel at the Kennecott Copper Corp, property, Bingham, Utah. The tunnel will provide railroad access to the world-famous open-pit copper mine at the projected 5490 level. This publication is one of a series prepared by the Bureau of Mines to depict mining operations and techniques in various mining districts in the United States. Utah Construction and Mining Go. (formerly Utah Construction Co.), contractor on the tunnel project, began work during September 1956 and completed the project in February 1959. The tunnel is 18 feet wide, 24 feet high, and about 18,000 feet long, It will accommodate a railroad locomotive on standard- gage track. With the exception of the last 1,700 feet, the tunnel is supported by steel sets embedded in concrete lining. The 1,700-fact segment of the tunnel is supported by timber sets that will eventually be removed as the pit is deepened.

Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest cost in underground mining operations. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of belt conveyors, a common practice in coal and similar soft miner ii mines. This is particularly true if oversize ore and rock can he eliminated prior to conveying; thus producing a demand for crushers near the production areas. Portable feeder-breakers are extensively used in conveyorized mines, but no suitable, equivalent equipment, is available to provide these benefits to hard rock mines of low to medium headroom. A hard rock crusher capable of easy movement and readily disassembled would allow use to belt conveyors and could improve the general safety and productivity of any underground ore hauling system. This report summarizes proposals and findings made in conjunction with the newly designed M-44 Low Head Portable Crusher which is believed well capable of meeting the requirements of a "portable, underground, hard rock" machine as previously defined in earlier reports. Data gathered by use of the 1/4 Scale Model of the M-44 has substantiated and verified the concept sufficiently to justify construction of a full-size machine for further testing under actual mine conditions.

This report describes methods and techniques employed by The Glidden Co. of Cleveland, Ohio, in explorating an ilmenite-bearing sand deposit in Ocean County, New Jersey, during 1960 to determine ore reserve potential and the feasibility of mining and establishing a milling plant on the property for the production of ilmenite concentrate. The property covered approximately 1,250 acres. Comprehensive sampling by water-jet drilling indicated the deposit averaged 20 feet in thickness and contained 4.5 percent heavy minerals, of which 80 to 85 percent was ilmenite and leucoxene. Average depth of the water table as determined by auger boring was 16.8 feet. Pilot plant tests indicated that circular concentrators in combination with spiral concentrators would recover at least 80 percent of the heavy mineral content of the sands. It was estimated that sufficient ore reserve tonnage had been developed to supply the company's Baltimore chemicals division, pigments department, with a suitable grade ilmenite concentrate for a period of 20 years at the present rate of pigments production. The property was designated as Lakehurst mine and plans are in progress for mining development and plant construction.

In 1984, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 13,730-acre Burnt Lodge (MT-065-278) Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The WSA is located in Phillips and Valley Counties, MT, about 55 miles south of Malta adjoining the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. It is underlain by near horizontal sedimentary beds of the Hell Creek Formation, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Bearpaw Shale. No mines or prospects were found in the WSA. Bentonitic beds were examined, but are generally less than 1 ft thick and, except where exposed, are deeply buried. Kaolin-bearing sandstone in the Colgate Member of the Foxhills Sandstone was sampled and may have potential for use in structural clay products. However, remoteness and inaccessibility of the area make it unlikely that the material could be economically extracted even though some of the material is marginally useful.

An important element of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mining research program is the development and evaluation of reliable coal interface detection (CID) systems. Commercially available CID sensors based on natural gamma radiation (NGR) are only applicable if the immediate roof is composed of shaley material. The USBM has made numerous underground and laboratory measurements using several NGR systems approved for installation on mining machines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. In addition, two small handheld NGR instruments were used to make comparative measurements. Underground NGR measurements in 10 different coal seams, potassium-uranium-thorium radiometric analyses on samples from 16 seams, and chemical analyses of coal and rock for correlation with NGR counts were made. Laboratory test results on the effect of air gap and sample thickness, size, and weight on the NGR measurements, as well as general results of the various NGR systems, are discussed.

Rock mass classification is widely used throughout the underground mining industry—in both coal and hard-rock mines. It is used in all stages of the mining process, from site characterization to production operations. The goal of the International Workshop on Rock Mass Classification in Underground Mining was to provide a forum for leading practitioners of rock mass classification to come together and share their methods and experiences with the technique. The workshop was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on May 31, 2007. It was co-chaired by Christopher Mark, Ph.D., P.E., National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh, PA, and Rimas Pakalnis, P.Eng., University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. The proceedings of the workshop contain 16 invited papers from 9 countries, reflecting the international depth and breadth of current practice. Applications in both hard-rock and coal mining are well represented. Some of the topics that were addressed at the workshop include: • Major rock mass classification systems used in mining and their variants • Collection of input data through observation, rock testing, and geophysics • Design of mine layouts and rock support systems using classification • Estimation of rock mass strength and other input parameters for numerical models from classification • Applications in weak rock, raise boring, cavability assessment, and other special topics • Risk assessment using rock mass classification

The Windigo Theilson RARE II area has a low mineral potential. There are no mines or claims in the area. The only observed results of mining activities were five prospect pits near Tolo Mountain. Samples from these pits contained no significant assays. The study area contains more than 190 million cu yds (145 million m3) of cinders in 17 cones. Development of these cinders is unlikely because their locations are remote, and other sources supply area needs. The Geological Survey has classified the area as prospectively valuable for geothermal resources. However, there has been no geothermal exploration activity.
