The rapid progress of basic changes in refining processes, which has characterized this division of the petroleum industry during the last 7 years, slowed up in 1926 and the industry as a whole devoted itself to the enormous task of adopting these changes to its methods of manufacturing. If for no other reason, the year of 1926 will stand out as the first year of widespread activities in placing refining on a true manufacturing basis. A brief survey of each of the important operations and the trend of the changes with their economic results indicate the importance of this period of transition. No attempt has been made to detail the numerous activities in each of the major operations and the writer would refer those seeking such information to the various trade papers and the paper on "Basic Changes in Refining Processes," by Walter Miller.' Distillation.—-Distillation (excluding cracking) is the major item in refining. During the past year there has been a wide application of the improvements developed in former years. Operating costs have been reduced for fuel, labor and capital items. Practically all types of distillations are now carried on as semi-continuous or continuous operations, rather than by the old batch method. Heat-saving devices, such as heat exchangers, or improved combustion chambers, have had a marked effect on the total fuel bill of the industry. The modern pipe-still has been widely used and figures available show that approximately 10 per cent. of the older shell equipment was replaced by pipe-stills during 1926. The range of usefulness of this type of equipment has been extended successfully to the most complicated types of lubricating oil manufacture. These stills afford marked economies in fuel as well as labor costs, also many advantages in older plants where space is limited, as a single pipe-still can replace several batteries of shell stills. Capital expenditure per barrel capacity is decidedly lower and offers economy in this direction. Although there has been considerable discussion of other types of distillation equipment such as the vacuum still, there has been no appreciable increase in these installations during 1926. During the past year the Committee on Coal and Coke has been collecting data concerning various phases of the bituminous industry about which considerable misinformation has been circulated even, in some cases, through the coal trade papers. The data here presented have been compiled by various members, from the most authentic sources available and, where possible, cover the period 1913-1924. They will enable comparisons to be made within the industry, and of this and other industries, and will explain some of the differences between conditions existing now and in the prewar period. Capacity and Over-development The capacity of bituminous mines is frequently stated at figures ranging between 800,000,000 to 1,400,000,000 tons per year. Table 1 shows statistics for the industry, mainly from U. S. Geological Survey sources but partly from U. S. Coal Commission reports. Column 3 gives the mine capacity with equipment and labor as of given date, as estimated from the data published by the U. S. Geological Survey. This is calculated for each State by obtaining the total man days worked as reported by the operators (multiplying average men employed by total days worked at each mine) and dividing this figure into the total production, getting the production per man day; this figure times number of men employed times 308 (a theoretical full working year) equals estimated full-time capacity. Two major objections are made to this method—one that the total number of men employed is used, instead of the number actually working, and the other that the number of days used only deducts Sundays and five holidays. The first objection is answered by the fact that the same number of men is used in estimating capacity as is used in actual production, and while this number is always from 12 to 20 per cent. more than are actually working, this condition exists at all times, although it is worse at times of maximum output. Few coal men will agree with the conclusion that the use of 308 days is correct, as it is practically impossible to keep any mine working full time at the same daily rate of production as when it is working part time, and the opinion is

Ventilation may be defined as the process by which vitiated air of an enclosed or partly enclosed space is continuously replaced by fresh air. Fresh air has been defined as invigorating pure air. It was, however, well known that the untoward effects produced on those exposed to such air was not due to the concentration of the carbon dioxide. It has been found that the untoward effects on the comfort and efficiency of those so exposed are due to the increased temperature and humidity. It has been found that men can breathe air containing many times the amount of carbon dioxide found in our worst ventilated theaters and assembly halls, which, according to Rosenau, do not contain above 0.5 per cent, carbon dioxide. Nevertheless, in mines it sometimes occurs in sufficient quantities to cause symptoms in men or even unconsciousness and death. One-half of 1 per cent. of carbon dioxide in normal air causes a slight and unnotice-able increase in the ventilation of the lungs, that is, a man exposed to one-ha,lf of 1 per cent. of carbon dioxide will breathe a little deeper and a little faster than when in pure air. IN January, 1926, the writer began a study of the commercial value of beryllium in its relation to copper. The purpose of the investigation was not to make a mere laboratory study of the characteristics of beryllium-copper alloys, but to determine under mill conditions the behavior of copper when alloyed with beryllium and when other metals were added to such alloys; in other words, it was considered important to know whether the alloy bars could be hot-rolled or cold-worked, and what limits in composition would have to be established for these two methods of working. Consequently, more stress has been placed on the practical application of the alloys in engineering and commercial use than on a discussion of the metallography of the specimens examined, although this part of the matter has not been entirely neglected. Credit should be first given to G. Oesterheld,1 who, in 1916, published the copper-beryllium equilibrium diagram. Fig. 1 has been copied from the original article with the simple substitution of English words. It will be noted from Fig. 1 that alpha solid solutions are formed, up to about 1.5 per cent. Be (10.5 atom.). The freezing-point curve, after falling from 4.2 per cent. Be (23.5 atom.), enters into a very complicated form over the entire beta region. There is a possible compound, Cu2Be, at about 6.5 per cent. Be (32.3 atom.). The pure gamma range extends from 11.2 to 12.2 per cent. Be. (46.5 to 49 atom.), after which the liquidus rises rapidly to 30 per cent. Be. (75 atom.). The delta solution extends from 25 per cent. to an unknown percentage of beryllium. There is a eutectoid point at 575" C., extending from 1.5 to 11.2 per cent. Be., the maximum time interval of which occurs at 6 per cent. Be. Below this line the beta solution is described as breaking up into alpha and gamma. Microscopically, the eutectiferous alloy thus formed closely resembles pearlite, and requires a high magnification for its resolution.

IN all wet concentration processes it is of primary importance to determine to what degree the crushing must be carried in order to obtain the maximum profit per ton of ore milled.To effect a clean separation, either by gravity or flotation treatment, between either one valuable sulphide from another, or a sUlphide from the gangue, the ore must have been subjected to grinding to such an extent that the particles to be separated are completely liberated from each other.Insufficient crushing will result in either an incomplete separation of the sulphides from each other, and thus a loss of the one sulphide in the other, or else a loss of the valuable sulphide in the gangue.This being so, the question arises whether the added cost of extra crushing would be economically warranted by the increased recovery consequent on such a step.

IN his recent article, Stanley C. Herold described some of the principles involved in oil-field rejuvenation. The purpose of this paper is to present certain facts, based upon observations of systematic water flooding of oil sands in the Bradford and Allegany fields of northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York, which, it is believed, will partially substantiate Mr. Herold's opinions. The writer gratefully acknowledges his obligation to the Forest Oil Corpn., the Kendall Refining Co., the Petroleum Reclamation Co., W. J. Healey, of Bradford, Pa., and the Producers Oil Corpn., of Olean, N. Y., for information included in this article; and he is especially indebted to Jerry B. Newby, of the Petroleum Reclamation Co., for helpful suggestions and criticism in the preparation of the paper. It is obvious that, in the calculation of mathematical formulas for the prediction of oil recovery, uniform conditions must be assumed; otherwise, the applicability of the results of such work will be, by necessity, restricted to the area or individual property for which they were designed. Geologic and physical conditions are so variable throughout the fields where water flooding is practiced that it is difficult to devise methods that can be universally applicable. However, it is believed that there are certain fundamental principles which, when applied with specific modifications designed to meet the conditions existing in local areas or individual properties, may yield considerably greater recoveries of oil.

Many articles on the physical properties of fire damp have appeared in the Transactions and elsewhere but practically nothing has been written in regard to its occurrence or fluctuation in quantity in an ordinary mine. After the Monongah explosion in 1907, with the loss of 361 lives, the Consolidation Coal Co. sought a method by which such catastrophes could be prevented. While the cause of this particular explosion was attributed to coal dust, some of those acquainted with the mine thought that fire damp was involved, if it was not the initial cause. So the literature on the subject was studied and mines where similar conditions prevailed in this country and Europe, were visited, with the view of establishing some system by which gas could be more easily detected and controlled. The results of this study were disappointing for no method was found other than the time-honored fire boss with his safety lamp, with some variations in the rules and regulations governing his inspections and reports. Duties of the Fire Boss Pending the development of a better method, it was decided to standardize and perfect the duties of the fire boss and the reports based on his observations. Those who were then in service were closely examined, various lamps were experimented with and the lamps and individuals tested under known conditions. It was found that a fire boss could tell whether gas was present but his estimate of quantity was not even an approximation; therefore, while the services of fire bosses were indispen-sible there was need of additional information by which the quantity of gas could be estimated with some precision in order to determine its variation from time to time. Chemical Process for Determination of Methane After considering all methods known at that time a chemical process was adopted. THE results are presented of an investigation to discover the fundamental atomic conditions existing in Corson's high-copper alloys hardenable by means of silicide solution and reprecipitation. The study attracted the writer because it offered a very convenient example of the general type of hardenable alloys exemplified by duralumin. Sykes' iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys and the hardenable lead-antimony. SUMMARY OF RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS In brief, the investigation shows that very perfect crystallinity exists in the solid solutions prepared at high temperature to contain as much dissolved silicide as possible. The lattice parameter of copper is altered very little by the amount of cobalt, nickel or chromium, and silicon dissolved. The hardening by drawing at a temperature to initiate precipitation of excess silicon and metal produces a remarkable change in the atomistics of the solid solution. The old perfection of crystallinity in the solid solution is destroyed and the new atomic spacings are of variable magnitude even in one grain, and a condition in a measure resembling that found in martensite is observed. Were no particles whatever precipitated by the drawing action, still ample causes for hardness would be in evidence in the solid solution alone. The lack of plane continuity in the crystal grains would oppose slip in a very effective manner. Complete annealing restores the crystalline perfection in large measure. In these alloys even the most sensitive methods failed to reveal the characteristic pattern of the silicide precipitated by the anneal, but this was largely to be expected as the amount is relatively small.

The results of an inquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research 1aboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys. The B Constituent In addition to locating the limits of composition for the three principal types of structure (polyhedral ferrite, martensite and austenite) and their combinations, certain other features of the system were observed. A hitherto undescribed brittle constituent (designated here as the "B constituent") was discovered. It is very hard, non-magnetic and forms in two modes from chrome-ferrite by recrystallization. It is the stable low-temperature condition for the equal-proportion chromium-iron materials containing less than 10 per cent. nickel. Although it partakes of the nature of an inter-metallic compound, yet it may exist over a considerable range of composition. It is non-existent above a temperalure zone, varying with composition, from 800° C. to 950° C., and heating above this critical temperature develops chrome ferrite persistent after average cooling rate; a few hours just below this temperature will develop the complicated brittle crystalline type. The B constituent, when found in the grain boundaries of alloys of lower chromium content, contributes a serious brittleness removable, however, by heating and cooling rapid enough to prevent its re-format'ion. By suitable means of precipitution, the hard B constituent can be made to strengthen the already stiff alloy matrix in the manner of submicro-scopic particles, as exemplified in duralumin or the Sykes iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys. THIS paper is written primarily for those who are familiar with the processes mentioned but who desire a further insight into some of the fundamental principles. It does not give a complete description of the various practices employed in the working of aluminum and its alloys, but presents a few illustrations of the essential respects in which aluminum differs from other common metals, and emphasizes the controlling factors of the processes under consideration. HEAT TREATING Certain aluminum alloys are capable of having their mechanical properties greatly altered by a heat-treatment process. The degree of this improvement may be illustrated by the typical properties of duralumin (Table 1). It is essential that the material be in the wrought condition in order to obtain maximum heat-treatment effects.

The ventilation of metal mines is becoming more of a fundamental requirement than it was 10 or even 5 years ago. There are many reasons for this, and in general they are based on economy or efficiency rather than health or safety, yet the latter enters into the picture in at least some instances. One Montana metal mine which had installed mine fans and a general ventilating system shut down the fan when there was a period of cessation of work; within a few weeks it was found that the underground timbers were becoming so covered with fungus that the fans were put into operation and thereafter continued in operation whether the mine was worked or not. The fungus soon disappeared and the cost of operating the fans was held to be far less than would be the numerous losses from timber decay which quickly started when cessation of air flow was encountered. A large iron ore mine in Michigan had much difficulty in holding men in a slicing region due to foul air under certain surface conditions as to direction of wind. Upon the placing of a moderate sized fan on the surface with some doors, stoppings and regulators underground, not only was the bad air condition removed but there was found to be a decided increase of tonnage per man per shift and timber decay was retarded to a very considerable extent. This particular mining company was rather inclined to be angry when I called attention to some of the what I considered very bad working conditions underground, and the mine superintendent for about a year and a half was on anything but friendly terms with me. Later on when the effect of the placing of the fan was found (the fan had been placed over his protest), that, man came through very nicely with a letter and congratulated me on the recommendation made and congratulated himself and the company on the conditions obtained after the installation of the fan. Wherever salt is extracted from the ground as an artificial brine produced by pumping down fresh water to dissolve the salt, subsidence of the overburden is a possibility, though apparently few cases of such subsidence have been noted and detailed records are wanting. This description is intended as a record of subsidence that may permit the forcasting of similar occurrences in other cases; the data were supplied largely by R. B. Lee, city engineer of Hutchinson, Kans. About eleven years ago, ground movement occurred at a neighboring salt plant, when the surface assumed the form of a shallow funnel. Movement was probably due to a flow of sand into a well through a poor seal or a broken casing. The salt deposit increases in thickness from the east until at Hutchinson, where the subsidence occurred, it is about 310 ft. thick. The interbedded layers of shale vary in thickness from mere traces to about 7 ft. While knowledge of the shale content of the beds is not exact, the log of a shaft 3 miles east of Hutchinson indicates that shale forms about 25 per cent. of the total thickness. This shaft does not reach the bottom of the salt by about 60 ft., but there is no reason to think that the lower part of the bed is different from the upper. Logs of wells sunk to the bottom are not sufficiently detailed to be of much value. Above the salt is the shale of the well-known Red Beds. The thickness of this is variable, principally because of its eroded surface, but at the mine it is 340 ft. This shale is variable in character and strength, but contains no strong members of limestone or sandstone. If the support is removed, very probably it will subside. The Arkansas River flows across the salt district and Hutchinson is situated on the flood plain. Between the top soil, which is about 8 ft. thick, and the shale is 60 to 100 ft. of water-bearing sand and gravel. The process of removing salt, at least in the case of the earlier wells with which we are concerned, is as follows: An 8-in. hole is put down through the sand and gravel by means of a drive pipe, which is bedded in the shale. Prom the top of the shale, a 6411. hole is drilled through the shale, to, or nearly to, the bottom of the salt. Casing is put in to a depth of about 140 ft. to shut off a water-bearing layer in the shale.

THIS paper presents in an abbreviated form the chief points of interest in an investigation of the tarnish-resistant qualities of silver alloys, an investigation which has been carried out as a joint research by the Bureau of Mines and the Bureau of Standards and will later be reported in detail in an official publication from these bureaus. In 1923 a Commission of Gold and Silver Inquiry was created by a Resolution of the U. S. Senate to study the causes of the depressed condi¬tion of the gold and silver industry. In cooperation with this commission the Bureau of Mines made a preliminary survey to determine in what ways, if any, it might be possible to increase the uses of silver. One of the possibilities indicated by this survey was the development of silver alloys which should be non-tarnishing, or at least less-tarnishing, than the usual sterling silver (copper-silver). The preparation of a rather wide variety of silver alloys and the determination of their behavior under accelerated tarnish tests in the laboratory was therefore undertaken by the bureaus, of Mines and Standards as a joint investigation. PREVIOUS WORK ON TARNISH RESISTING SILVERS At about the time this work was undertaken interest in tarnish-resisting silvers was rather keen due to announcements from England that there had been developed a new silver alloy, "Silanca," which was resistant to tarnish. It was even frequently described in the popular press as "non-tarnishing." A few samples and several analyses of "Silanca" which were available indicated that it was an alloy of sterling fineness, that is, it contained about 93 per cent. of silver, with approximately 4.5 per cent. of antimony and either cadmium or zinc, or both, to make the remaining 2.5 per cent.

ANY metal which contains even a small percentage of aluminum possesses certain peculiarities of appearance and properties which are exhibited both when the metal is melted and after it solidifies. Pure aluminum, or an alloy containing a small proportion of aluminum, can be melted without flux-except for a layer of charcoal-because a film of aluminum oxide and metal forms at the surface of melted aluminum. Although very thin, this film is air-proof, and it prevents the metal underneath from oxidizing. This oxidized film does not move easily on account of its toughness and high surface tension. One very important point in connection with this process of still casting has not been strongly enough stressed, namely, that the same kind of surface film with the same peculiarities forms over the surface of all melted alloys that contain even a small proportion of aluminum. Experienced foundrymen know how desirable it is to cast aluminum under its "skin" or under the surface of the film which tends to remain still. In the case of red copper, when in fusion, the surface shows pure copper only. This' is due to the fact that liquid copper constantly absorbs the copper oxide which forms on the surface. By closely examining melting copper the oxide can be seen dissolving in the bath, and going into solution just as pulverized sugar dissolves in water. When copper is cast in the open, either in wire bars or cakes, the surface of metal exposed to the air is covered by a film of black oxide that cannot be absorbed by the metal.

A standard set of coal mining laws for the entire United States is hardly practicsble, yet the numerous variations in the state laws for almost every item seems entirely unnecessary. The same useless variations appear in almost every comparable section with no apparent reason except that no attempt has ever been made to codify them, and as they were developed over a long period of time by innumerable individuals and legislatures, the present situation is the logical outcome of lack of cooperation between states. The ventilation of a mine is affected indirectly by many provisions not listed specifically under this heading, so that it would be necessary to tabulate the major portion of all the laws to secure a complete comparable digest; therefore only a few of the more important have been set down here. This point is well illustrated in the section providing for clearance between car and rib, which is intended as a safety measure against personal injury, but is very important from the standpoint of ventilation because of choked airways in mines on two-entry system. Confusing Phraseology Misinterpretation and confusion may be expected from the phraseology alone; one state provides that the scale of the mine map shall be "not more than 100 ft. to 1 in.;'' another state demands "not less than 100 ft. to 1 in." Both probably mean the same thing and seek to prevent the operator from furnishing a map on which the workings will appear SO small that the detail is illegible. Legislation is certainly indefinite that specifies structures must be fireproof when "near" a mine opening, and just what is a "dusty" or "gaseous" mine is open to argument in most of the states. The variation in spacing crosscuts and break-throughs and the limited number of men on a split seem entirely unnecessary, as the distance is not reduced in gaseous fields, excepting in Arkansas and Tennessee, which states produce a comparatively small amount of coal, and the number of men differs 100 per cent. and more for no apparent reason.

Operating Characteristics of Centrifugal Fans and Use of Fan Performance Curve Discussion of paper by. Louis W. BRIGHT, Pittsburgh, Pa.-Apparently from the pressure curves for a forward-curved-blade fan, in Mr. Huber's paper, practically all ventilation-might be stopped with increased resistance. In order, to discuss the characteristics of a fan we need, some better way to measure the characteristics of a mine. You all know that. the average anemometer is not very-reliable. Sometimes two anemometers, supposed to be recently calibrated, will differ 50 per cent. Either this or some other committee should standardize measuring methods. The characteristic curves of fans, given by Mr. Huber, would indicate that the forward-curved-blade fan would cause trouble in attempting parallel operation, because two machines will not parallel unless they have dropping pressure characteristics. On the other hand, it is indicated that with the backward-curved blade, they could easily be paralleled. But few mines use more than one fan. Mr. Huber said that if the resistance of the mine was considerably more than contemplated, the quantity of air might be such that the efficiency of the backward-curved fan would be seriously affected, dropping say from 70 to 55 or 50 per cent. In such event, could a difference of speed be selected for the fan that would give the quantity desired at a higher efficiency? L. W. HUBER, Pittsburgh, Pa.-The backward-curved-blade fan responds to change in speed the same as any other fan; if' the speed is doubled, the quantity of air is doubled, the pressure is increased four times and the horsepower eight times. One point not mentioned in the paper is that the backward-curved fan is more efficient than the forward-curved or any other type. If the latter were more efficient, it would pay to install that type and keep the resistance of the mine constant, which is hard to do but it can be done with care. But the total mechanical efficiency of a fan with backward-curved blades is from 10 to 20 per cent. higher.

The success of a coal-mining venture as relates to operations at the gob or break-line, such as the drawing of pillars or the working of long-faces, depends upon the control of face conditions. The measures required to control the latter are dependent upon the action of the coal seam, roof and floor at and in the vicinity of the faces, but the manner in which these will act is dependent upon the rate of face movement as well as upon the facc characteristics and upon the forces exerted. Yet the merits of a method of working—the practicability of controlling face conditions and the means required for such control when applied to any particular case—are usually judged only upon a consideration of the characteristics of coal seam, roof and floor, and the manner in which they have been observed to act. Practically every coal-mining man knows that face conditions are influenced by the rate of face movement, but few have appreciated that this is as much of a factor in the control of face conditions as are the face characteristics and the forces exerted. Fewer yet have recognized or taken advantage of faster rates of face movement as one of the principal means of establishing control of face conditions or of securing more favorable face conditions. Seemingly inherent difficulties, particularly in the control of roof conditions, but also in the control of conditions of the coal seam and floor, are frequently mitigated or disappear when the rate of movement of the faces is sufficiently increased. The characteristics of the coal seam, roof and floor and the forces exerted upon them do determine the general trend or tendency of face action, but the manner in which the coal seam, roof and floor will act and be aeted upon and the magnitude of the action during the time the site of mining operations remains at any particular point are very largely determined by the rate of movement of the faces.
