It is generally realized and very often admitted by both producers and consumers of coal that there is great need for a revision of existing commercial classifications, and this will involve, of course, determination of a standard classification and a constant revision of marketing practices as they are affected by coal classification. I recently sent out some 200 letters to producers and consumers with a request for their views on the subject of commercial classification. Nearly all of the replies from both sides were that there was needed some change in the present method. There were three or four dissenting voices but the great majority of opinion was in favor of the formulation of some standard commercial classification. The classifications in commercial use today can best be described as a hodgepodge. They are made upon different bases, have different names and have different ways. There are, for instance, about 11 single bases of classifications as used commercially and some 17 or 18 combination bases. Then there were the Tidewater Pool Exchanges. The classification which they put in force is still used in the tidewater markets and has several different bases of its own. It will be considerable of an undertaking to bring about a change in marketing methods as affected by coal classification but it is well worth doing and I think the committee which has been appointed under the auspices of the American Society for Testing Materials realizes the importance of the subject and is on the way to at least bring about some provision for adjusting matters. By way of starting, each member of the Committee on Commercial Classification has been assigned to a general market district and each member is now engaged in collecting the commercial market practice data for submission at the next meeting of the Committee. About a year ago I made up a list of the commercial classifications in the different markets and the total was 171. The 11 single bases I found used in commercial practice were:

As the basis for a round table discussion of Petroleum Engineering Education for the February, 1930, meeting of the Petroleum Division, A. I. M. One of the greatest improvements in drilling equipment has been the development of hard facing metals which are welded by electricity or by acetylene to form a facing which protects the steel of the bit from abrasive wear. The main desirable characteristics of hard facing metals are resistance to abrasive wear, resistance to shock and perfect bond with underlying metal. Resistance to abrasion offered by various metals shows many anomalies. Compounds containing carbon, silicon and boron are the most important hard substances. Carbon, as diamond, silicon carbide and especially the carbides of iron, chromium and tungsten are the outstanding hard products in common use. Tungsten carbide is probably the most commonly used. It is made in the electric furnace and it is important to get the right amount of carbon and the correct crystalline structure in order to obtain the greatest hardness and greatest resistance to abrasion. It may be obtained in three main divisions: wrought, cast and casehardened. Insert hard metals are common. The method of application varies, but it is generally welded to the bit, placed in channels or in drilled holes and covered with a hard surfacing metal. Robinson' has given a very complete article on the use of inserts. Gregg and Küttner2 has discussed the metallography of tungsten carbides and given a good bibliography of the subject,. The time and expense of large-scale testing, together with variations in results, led to the development of a laboratory testing machine for determining the abrasive-resisting qualities of different metals. This machine consists of a motor-driven 40-grain, alumina-base corundum wheel, 8 in. dia., rotating at 30 r.p.m. It is run wet and dressed with

In another paper' the writer has shown that the low permissible maximum fiber stress in a loaded zinc sheet demands a much closer support spacing than is used for steel. The limiting fiber stress in 13-gage (0.032 in.) sheets having a 1-in. depth of corrugation was found to be about 5000 lb. per sq. in. on a 37-in. span under a load of 40 Ib. per sq. ft. Corrugated steel sheets are commonly laid with spans varying from 48 to 60 in. In order to increase the span in 13-gage zinc to 54 in. (a common spacing) the metal must be capable of withstanding, under long-continued loading, a maximum fiber stress of about 10,000 lb. per sq. in. This is known to be impossible with unalloyed zinc. In this paper the writer describes a series of experiments leading up to the development of an alloy capable of safely sustaining this fiber stress. The effect of alloying on the slow creep of zinc was studied by means of static tensile tests, accurate determinations of apparent elastic limits and finally by means of loading tests on full-size roof sections. Two industrial buildings roofed with alloyed zinc sheets on spans involving fiber stresses in excess of 10,000 lb. per sq. in. have been under observation for over two years without signs of sagging. Experimental Work Two methods of increasing the maximum permissible fiber stress in zinc were considered. Cold rolling, which' increases the stiffness and tensile strength, was found to decrease the resistance to slow flow. Alloying, therefore, provided the only feasible means of obtaining the desired result, It was recognized that the improvement secured by the solid solution of natural impurities was insufficient. The deductions drawn in crushing and grinding operations have heretofore been based on a separation of the products into various sizes. A crushed product may be sized by sieving, by elutriation and by aid of the microscope. To estimate the surface of each size the relation of the surface to the estimated average diameter must be assumed. Such a relation, owing to the irregularity of the particles, may involve two assumptions: First, a factor to convert average diameter to surface for one particular size; and second, a variation in the factor as the diameter of the particle changes. Obviously a surface measurement in which such assumptions and estimates are involved is questionable. In the first paper of this series1 a method has been given by which an accurate measure of surface of quartz can be obtained from its dissolution rate. By the use of this method, surface measurements have been made on a series of sieve sizes of crushed quartz, the results of which are given and discussed in this paper. Prepaeation of the Quartz Sizes The quartz, consisting of large uniform pieces with a density of 2.65 and a purity of 99.5 per cent. SiO2, was crushed to pass 20 mesh and was then sieved. Tyler standard sieves were used, the sieving being done by hand according to the proposed standard method submitted by the senior author to the Milling Committee of the A. I. M. E. A wet split of the sample was made on a 270-mesh sieve. This was followed by dry sieving until less than 0.05 per cent. of the weight of the sample passed through the sieve in 1-min. sieving. The +28-mesh material was discarded because that size did not contain the difficult grains from the 20-mesh sieve.

Practically all tin-base babbitt metals used in engine bearings are made to customers' specifications, which are many and varied. The copper ranges from 3 to 8 per cent. and the antimony from 4 to 13 per cent.; generally, the babbitt with lower copper content will contain from 4 to 8 per cent. antimony and that with higher copper will have from 7 to 13 per cent. antimony. The allowable lead content varies from 0.20 to 2.00 per cent. If a solder is used as a bonding material instead of tin, the resulting material in the finished bearing will have a higher lead content, but it would not be enough to bring the lead above specifica-tional limits. Impurities such as iron, arsenic and bismuth should be determined in the tin before using to insure a uniform and high-grade product. These points must be considered when segregating and grading the waste that comes from the finishing operations on lined bearings. Classification of SCRAP Because of the extremely rigid nature of most of the specifications for bearing linings it is necessary to use the purest of materials as a base for all compositions. The problem of handling secondary metals is confined almost entirely to the recovery of drosses, spills and turnings incident to the manufacturing operations. As a matter of convenience the waste or scrap may be divided into 10 grades, as follows: 1. Tin from pots where tinning operation is carried out. 2. Tin and babbitt spatters from babbitting operation. - 3. Tin skimmings combined with burned zinc chloride. 4. Borings and reamings. 5. Gates from die-cast bushings and bearings. 6. Drosses from die-cast pots, babbitt foundry pots, and pots in babbittiug room. 7. Babbitt with small amount of bronze from machining operations. 8. Babbitt and bronze borings. 9. Scrap bronze-back babbitt-lined bearings. I 10. Scrap die-cast bearings and bushings. The mixing of fine ores with fuel and burning under induced draft is called sintering in iron-ore practice and either sintering or roasting in copper and lead metallurgy. The first development of sintering was the Huntington-Heberlein process, in which fine sulfide ores mixed with fuel were charged into a pot and burned under the action of an upcast current of air introduced at the bottom of the pot. Modern development has resulted in two types of machine; the continuous Dwight-Lloyd machine, which consists of heat-resisting grates and a moving beltlike type of hearth constructed of metal, in which air is drawn downward through the bed, and the stationary Greenawalt batch process, which operates in the same manner as the Dwight-Lloyd except that the hearth is stationary. The recent rapid increase in the use of sintering has been the result of two great advances in metallurgical process—flotation and the treatment of flue dust. The Dwight-Lloyd machine is used in many plants for agglomerating flotation concentrates and at the same time reducing the sulfur content to furnace requirements and it has become standard practice to treat iron blast-furnace flue dust by either the Greenawalt or Dwight-Lloyd machine, so that it can be recharged into the furnace. The mining of low-grade magnetite iron deposits and their beneficiat-ing by grinding and magnetic separation resulted in a fine concentrate extremely detrimental to blast-furnace practice. These concentrates are sintered and made into ideal material for blast-furnace use. Incidentally, coke savings of about 400 lb. per ton of pig are reported. Sintering at Evergreen Plant The application to limonitic iron ores is the most recent development of the sintering process. The first plant in the Lake Superior region was erected by the Minnesota Sintering Co., a subsidiary of the Evergreen Mining Co., at Ironton, Minn., in 1924. This plant was designed to treat Cuyuna Range iron and manganiferous ores containing low silica, high moisture and a structure objectionable because of a large proportion

For purposes of coal classification it is desirable to know the composition and calorific value of the pure coal substance; that is, of the coal free from its ash-forming minerals. Two methods suggest themselves: (1) To free the coal from most of the ash-forming material previous to the analysis; and (2) to analyze the coal as received and calculate the analysis, with certain more or less arbitrary corrections, to the pure-coal basis. Calculation methods are obviously more apt to give correct results with low-ash than high-ash coals. With coals of unusually high ash it would appear preferable to remove, previous to the analysis, as much of the inorganic matter as possible, by float-and-sink or acid-treating methods. Effect of Ignition on Inorganic Constituents of Coal The need of corrections in calculating analysis to the pure-coal basis is due to the fact that the ash, as determined by ignition, is not the same, in either weight or composition, as the inorganic mineral matter in the coal. On ignition a number of changes occur in the coal such as loss of water of hydration of the shaly material, conversion of pyrite (FeS2) to ferric oxide (Fe203) with evolution of the sulfur as sulfur dioxide or possible fixation of more or less of the sulfur in the ash as calcium sulfate (CaSO4), and decomposition of calcite (CaC03) to calcium oxide (CaO). The amount of sulfur from pyrite which remains in the ash as calcium sulfate depends on the amount of calcite and pyrite in the coal. Certain coals high in both calcite and pyrite show relatively large amounts of sulfate sulfur in the coal ash. The determination of total carbon and hydrogen in coal includes, besides the organic carbon and hydrogen, the carbon of inorganic carbonates such as calcite, and the hydrogen of the water of composition of some of the ash-forming minerals. IN 1926 one of the authors published researches on the determination and description of the iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum systems,1 including the equilibrium diagrams. In 1929, further work was carried on, including the examination by X-rays, which is recorded here. Measurements were made of changes in lattice parameters in the solid solutions. Precipitation from the solid solution and the accompanying changes in hardness were studied as well as the formation of the intermetallic compound phases upon sintering a mixture of metal powders.

Many requests for information as to the possibility of washing coals to some predetermined percentage of ash or sulfur have suggested that the producers aim to satisfy some degree of purity set by the user of the fuel, rather than to attain the greatest economic benefit to all concerned. This paper is written to show that the highest economic purity of washed coal can be determined from washability studies of the raw coal, costs of mining and washing coal, and data on the effect of ash and sulfur on the value of the coal for the particular use for which it is intended. Coke fob Blast-fuenace Use For purposes of illustration, we take the case of coal washed for coke to be used in the iron blast furnace. The method outlined can be made general in its application by substituting for the figures used here the actual operating figures for the particular case under consideration. In general, it costs the blast-furnace operation from 8 to 25 c. per ton of pig iron to slag out each 1 per cent. of ash introduced into the blast furnace by the coke. This figure depends on which one per cent. of ash is removed, and decreases with decrease in ash. When blast furnaces and coal mines are considered as a whole, the figure decreases to zero and then becomes negative, on account of low recovery of washed coal. Various figures1 have been given by different investigators. These figures necessarily differ, not only on account of the differences in operating costs but on account of the difference in the respective fuels as well. For the purpose of this paper, which, as explained, is to point out a method of attacking a certain problem, the figures used in the exposition of the method are of secondary importance. It is apparent that no universally applicable figures can be used, because there are none. Each plant has its own coal,2 its own operating cost, and its own conditions.

SAN FRANCISCO Mines of Mexico, Ltd. owns and operates an extensive group of claims in the San Francisco del Oro-Santa Barbara district, about 15 miles southwest of Parral, Chihuahua. The property comprises the mines, aerial tramways, flotation mill, power plant, shops, offices, assay and testing laboratories, modern hospital, water and sanitary system, quarters for miners, mechanics and operators, a well housed colony for Mexican staff employees and residences for foreigners. Each colony has a club house and mess and tennis courts. The employees have constructed a nine-hole golf course. In other words, the property is self-contained and completely integrated for production of lead and zinc concentrates from complex sulfide ores.

Anthracite, as sent to market, comes under three general terms of description: characteristics, source and size. Anthracite is generally classified as white ash, red ash, or Lykens Valley. The white ash coals are sometimes further described as "hard" or "free-burning." Lehigh white ash would come under the former description and Shamokin white ash under the latter. As a rule, it may be said that the nearer the origin of the coal to the western extremity of the anthracite region, the softer and more free-burning it is. Indeed, for many years the coal from Trevorton, at the western tip of the Middle Western field, was classified as "semianthracite" in the shipment reports. Lykens Valley coal is always a red ash coal, with a higher volatile content than the general run of anthracite, and consequently free-burning. The name does not exclusively indicate the neighborhood in which the coal is dug, but rather refers to the beds from which it is obtained. These beds lie, not above the Pottsville conglomerate, as is the rule, but encased in it. The extreme eastern limit of the Lykens Valley beds would seem to be about Tremont, in Schuylkill County, and the Natalie mine, near Mount Carmel. There are, of course, traces of these beds farther to the east, but they do not seem to be workable. There are as many as six of the Lykens Valley measures found in the conglomerate at some points, but to a large extent they are unworkable. Whether this coal is obtained in the Lykens Valley proper, where the beds were first identified, or from the Shamokin Valley, it is always Lykens Valley coal, and it has long been considered a premium coal, especially desirable for domestic use, particularly when a quick, hot kitchen fire is desired. Coals are, of course, frequently marketed under special names—Jeddo, Scranton, Kingston, Old Company Lehigh, Famous Reading, Lacka-wanna, etc.—which, of course, have the trade significance which their producers and vendors have built up. The Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at its last session passed a new act dealing with barrier pillars, which may have a wide interest in other states. In the past the laws of Pennsylvania have required that the superintendent of a mine "shall not permit the mining of coal within 50 ft. of any abandoned mine containing a dangerous accumulation of water, until said danger has been removed by driving a passageway to tap and drain off said water, as provided for in this act: Provided, That the thickness of the barrier pillars shall be greater aid shall be in proportion of one foot of pillar thickness to each one and one-quarter feet of water head, if in the judgment of the engineer of the property and that of the district inspector it is necessary for the safety of the persons working in the mine." Thus it has happened that a thickness of several hundred feet has necessarily been left in pillars in mining. It has seemed to many in the mining industry that this left an unnecessary amount of coal in pillars, and did not provide that the pillar be left equally on the two sides of the mine. As a result the General Assembly of 1927 by Joint Resolution authorized the Governor to appoint a Commission of "seven prominent citizens, of whom four shall be recognized mining engineers, one shall be a hydraulic engineer, one a geologist of recognized standing in his profession, and one a State mine inspector from the bituminous coal mining district, to investigate and report upon barrier pillars in the bituminous coal region." The Governor appointed the following Commission: Morris Coulter, Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corp., Indiana, Pa.; A. E. Roberts, Monroe Coal Mining Co., Revloc, Pa.; George T. Lewis, Westmoreland Coal Co., Irwin, Pa.; Morris Knowles, hydraulic engineer, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Thomas A. Mather, State Inspector of Mines, Tyrone, Pa.; A. B. Jessup, Anthracite Coal Operators Association, Jeddo, Pa.; George H. Ashley, State Geologist, Harrisburg, Pa. Mr. Coulter was elected Chairman and Mr. Ashley, Secretary. This Commission held meetings in Harrisburg, Johnstown and Pittsburgh. It obtained and considered the laws and experiences of other states and European countries. "DEEPHOLE " or "Longhole" drilling is the name given to the drilling of prospecting holes with the pneumatic hammer drill. The drilling bit is of the same form, and is prepared in the same way as ordinary rock drill steel, and is extended to the bottom of the hole by sectional hollow rods, through which water is forced.The cuttings from the hole provide a sample of the ground drilled.Deephole drilling was developed at an American mine where the cost of diamond drilling, owing to loss of diamonds, was excessive, and proved very successful, holes being drilled as deep as 220 ft., in limestone, at a cost of one dollar per foot. The use of the method in other mines, and in a variety of rocks, has since been described in the technical literature. From the published descriptions the following data are drawn:

In this investigation, the ampoule type of carbon-monoxide (CO) detector which is manufactured under license of U. S. Patent 1,644,014 (October 4, 1927) was tested for sensitivity and reliability. This detector was devised primarily for examining the air of manholes and sewers for possible dangerous contamination with CO before workmen enter these places, but due to the simplicity of the device it may have a more general usage for examination of atmospheres which are known or suspected, to be contaminated with CO. Some of the suggested uses are the examination of the air in garages, tunnels, mines, around blast furnaces, gas plants, and in the home.
