In a previous paper,' the use of a split graphite tube resistor as a heater element for high-temperature furnaces has been described. The principal advantages of this type of construction are: I. The quadruple resistance or voltage compared with the top-bottom clamp resistor furnace. 2. Free expansion of the resistor. 3. The ease of protection from oxidation by air. 4. The firmness by which it may be held in the compact split clamp. This construction appeared to be well adapted for the fusion of high melting metals which require fusion in a vacuum. Zirconium metal had previously been melted at the Albany Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines in a vacuum arc furnace on a water-cooled plate, using a movable tungsten top electrode.% When larger furnace capacities were desired, this type of construction proved to have its limitations as the largest tungsten rods available were about 7/8 in. in diameter. The supply of direct current of high amperage for producing the desired arc characteristics was also not available. Considerable difficulty was also found in compensating the atmospheric pressure on the flcxible tubing of the movable electrodc, at the same time keeping its movement sufficiently free to enable the striking of an arc on any part of the metal briquet. Among the various materials used for the electrodes in conducting experiments in the vacuum arc furnace was graphite. It was found that zirconium fused in a graphite cup with a carbon arc was contaminated to only 0.2 pct carbon. It was therefore decsed to melt zirconium directly in graphite crucibles. A high-frequency furnace was first used in the attempt to melt the zirconium in graphite crucibles. The high-frequency heating coil was placed outside a silica tube which was evacuated by means of an oil diffusion pump backed up by a mechanical pump. The graphite crucible was thoroughly degassed at 19oo"C before use. Considerable difficulty was experienced in operating at such temperatures in vacuo because, as shown by Zintl,3 carbon vapor formed and reacted with silica accortling to the reaction: SiO² + C = SiO + CO. The silicon monoxide which is volatile at these high temperatures reacted with the zirconium, thereby contaminating it with silicon and oxygen. The presence of carbon monoxide was detected by means of a gas discharge tube placed in the vacuum system as indicated by the pale blue glow of the tube as soon as carbon vapor started to react with the hot silica. Fourteen straight-run asphalts were prepared in the laboratory from bitumens obtained from three sources: (1) native bitumen from Rozel Point, Utah, (2). bitumen extracted from Athabaska bituminous sandstone at Canada, and (3) bitumen extracted from Edna bituminous sandstone outcropping in San Luis Obispo County, to seven asphalts with penetrations ranging from 19 to 287 at 77 F. were prepared from each of the bitumens. The yields of the prepared asphalts ranged from 74.5 percent for a 27-penetration asphalt from the Athabaska bitumen to 99.5 percent for a 271-penetration asphalt from the Rozel Point bitumen.

For several years barite (BaSO4) production has topped such better known minerals as feldspar and fluorspar in annual tonnage and is now well established among our foremost nonmetallic industries. Description Of widespread occurrence in the United States, barite is relatively soft (hardness, 2.5 to 3.5), inert, heavy (specific gravity, 4.5), and is also called "barytes" (sometimes pronounced "bear-i-tease"), "heavy spar" and "tiff." It occurs with granular and earthy structure but usually has coarse, orthorhombic crystallization. It is commonly white, and although occurring in various shades of red, yellow, and gray, barite always gives a white streak and can be scratched by the ordinary prospecting pick. Its softness and weight are usually sufficient to establish field identification. Another aid is the "rotten egg" odor of H2S which sometimes emanates from freshly fractured surfaces. Barite can be readily distinguished from two other minerals which have somewhat similar occurrences and characteristics. The relatively rare celestite, strontium sulphate, has a specific gravity slightly less than 4.00 and gives a distinctively crimson color in a flame test. The very rare wither-ite, barium carbonate, has a specific gravity of 4.3 but readily effervesces with dilute hydrochloric acid. Occurrence All known commercially important barite deposits in the United States occur as re- placements or cavity fillings in schists, shales, limestones, dolomites, and quart-zites, or as residual deposits from such formations. In Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Missouri, high-grade barite is recovered as fragments from residual clays covering quartzites and dolomites. In Arkansas, Nevada, and California, barite, usually of lower grade, is mined from replacement deposits. These seven states contributed the entire production reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1945 as given in Table I. Such a large part of this undistributed production came from California that that state probably outranked both Nevada and Tennessee. For the second consecutive year Arkansas was the leading producing state, particularly worthy of note because there was no commercial production of barite there prior to 1941 and because the entire production of Arkansas has come from one large deposit which is being operated by two companies. Probably no other type of equipment is now being introduced into American underground mines about which less is known and about which there is more misinformation than the Diesel mine locomotive. Any equipment installed underground brings with it hazards that were not present before, and it is the purpose of this paper to show that Diesel-powered equipment can be used with safety in underground mining if certain feasible but very important precautions are taken. Diesel locomotives are not new in underground mining, since they have been used successfully in European mines for at least 19 years, but their use in American mines is exceedingly limited; so far as is known, only five Diesel mine locomotives are operating at present in United States mines. Diesel locomotives were permitted underground in Great Britain for the first time in 1939, and the rapid increase in the number in use in those mines testifies to their safety and efficiency. More than 1300 Diesel mine locomotives are in use in European mines, according to the latest statistics; these locomotives are employed in coal, iron, lead-zinc and mercury mines. SO far as is known, the Diesel mine locomotive has not yet caused an explosion or mine fire, and has not been the cause of any fatalities from toxic gases in the mines in which it has been used. Adjustments of Diesel Engines foR Underground Use A Diesel engine adjusted to work in an underground mine should not be confused with the same engine adjusted for use outside the mine. Adjustment of the air:fuel ratio for engines that are used on the surface is intended to give the maximum fuel economy, and little or no attention is given to the chemical composition of the exhaust gas produced. Many such engines are poorly adjusted and perhaps poorly maintained, with the result that the engine emits smoke in quantity as well as the disagreeable odor familiarly associated with Diesel engines. The air:fuel ratio in the case of Diesel engines operated on the surface is generally around 15:1; that is, 15 lb of air to burn I lb of fuel. Diesel engines adjusted to work underground usually have an air:fuel ratio of about 20:1, as at this ratio the minimum quantity of toxic gases is given off in the engine exhaust. Diesel engines operated underground must be maintained in better condition than similar engines used on the surface; otherwise, the smoke emitted in the exhaust becomes objectionable if not unendurable. Practically normal air is required for safe operation of Diesel engines underground or in confined places; failure to provide virtually normal air for Diesel engine operation is almost certain to result in trouble. "The Frood-Stobie Mine is by far the largest metal producer in the Sudbury area. Its efficient development was made possible by the consolidation of three mining properties that covered parts of the same ore body. They were known as the Frood Mine, the Frood Extension, and the Stobie Mine.The southwest or Frood portion of the orebody was discovered by Thomas Frood and A. J. Cockburn in 1884. Cockburn's interest was acquired by J. H. Metcalf and W. B. McAllister and patents were issued to Frood, Metcalf, and McAllister in 1884. The property was purchased by the Canadian Copper Company (lnco) in 1886.James Stobie discovered the northeast or Stobie part of the orebody in 1885. In 1886 Stobie and Rinaldo McConnell applied for the location and patent was issued in 1886. They sold the property to the Canadian Copper Company (lnco) the same year.The Frood Extension property included very little of the ore zone at surface but it covered ore down the dip from Frood. Frank Cochrane was granted title to the property in 1908 and sold it to the Mond Nickel Company in 1910. The title was transferred to the International Nickel Company in 1929 at the time of the Inco-Mond merger.Prior to 1930 the three properties produced a total of about 1 ,000,000 tons of ore from mining done during the periods 1887-1903, 1913-1915 and 1925-1929. Since 1929 the Frood-Stobie operation has produced more than 120,000,000 tons of ore, about half from open pits and half from square set and blast hole stoping. The current production rate is in excess of 6,000,000 tons per year.The principal products from the ore are nickel and copper. The by-products are iron ore, cobalt, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, gold, silver, selenium, tellurium, and sulphuric acid."

Bureau of Mines engineers engaged in studying stimulative methods of recovering oil have been making a series of tests on the effectiveness' of methods that may be applied in water flooding oil-bearing sandstones. The report gives the test procedures and results of a study of the rates and pressures used for injecting water into several sandstone formations in the Mid-Continent fields for the purpose of learning more about the mechanics and efficiency of the flooding process and to provide useful information for operators of water floods in this area.

In its investigation of old, abandoned, lead-zinc mines at which records of operations are not available, in 1914 the Bureau of Mines dug surface trenches anti', in 1947 It diamond-drilled three holes at the Albright Farm deposit in Sinking Valley. Some good lead-zinc ore had been extracted from veins in dolomitic limestone during the time of the American Revolution and as late as 1870. Since that time the only activity was sporadic prospecting and developing. Thu Bureau of Mines disclosed two additional veins by surface trenching, but diamond drilling failed to find significant lead-zinc mineralization.

By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

The properties of limestone reservoir rocks such as the distribution and degree of continuity of the pore systems, and the relative volumes and permeabilities of the systems making up the complex cause large variations between performance of individual limestone reservoirs and their susceptibility to secondary recovery methods. The effects of these factors on the mechanism of fluid flow cannot be adequately evaluated with presently developed concepts, laboratory data, and geological information. The observance and interpretation of the performance of individual limestone reservoirs provides, at present, the most adequate approach for evaluating the integrated effects upon performance of the many. now immeasurable variations in the properties of limestone reservoirs. INTRODUCTION The development and application of techniques for increasing the efficiency of oil recovery from natural reservoirs is a problem of primary importance to the industry. During the past several years, a great deal of effort has been expended by the technical personnel of the industry toward the improvement of present known methods of oil recovery. and evaluating the factors which control the susceptibility of particular reservoir types to economic application of secondary recovery methods. Providing adequate and accurate laboratory data on the properties of the reservoir rock and its contained fluids. together with good production statistics, are available, methods have been evolved for estimating with reasonable accuracy the performance of an oil reservoir under either continued natural depletion or conditions imposed by introducing additional displacing fluid into the reservoir from an extraneous source through the injection of gas and/or water. The susceptibility of limestone reservoirs to secondary recovery by gas injection is very much dependent upon gas-oil relative permeability relationships for the reservoir in question. In a rock formation in which the porosity is of the intergranular type such as is found in sand stones and some non-fractured dolomites, a representative sample of the pore structure can be obtained in a small core plug. In this type of reservoir, it has been shown that relative permeability data obtained from laboratory experiments can be Properly applied to evaluate the flow relationships actually observed during the depletion of a reservoir. In addition, a good idea of the fraction of the reservoir which will be swept by the injected gas may be obtained from the spacing pattern used and the permeability profile of cored wells. From these data, it has been demonstrated that reliable estimates of performance and recoveries under gas injection operations can be made for reservoirs in which the Porosity is of the intergranular type. Limestone reservoirs on the other hand often present much more complex problems. One reason that the performance of limestone reservoirs is so variable is that there may be, in reality. two or more pore systems, the integrated performance of which will depend upon the physical properties of each system and their inter-relationship. For instance, in a limestone reservoir, the main pore structure, as far as void spaces for storage of hydrocarbons is concerned, may be represented by the intergranular openings of the rock. Usually in limes and dolomites, the intergranular pore openings are very small and the matrix permeabilities extremely low. Often, as in the case of Many dolomite and oolitic lime reservoirs, this is the only pore system, and performance is observed to be very similar to that of a sand stone of similar permeability. However, in the great majority of' the limestone reservoirs, there is present, in addition to the intergranular pore system, a complementary system of openings caused by fracturing or solution.',' The openings in the latter system are usually many times more permeable than the intergranular pore system due to their much larger size, and may contribute almost all the fluid carrying capacity of the formation, even though their volume may be a very small part of the total pore space in the reservoir. Obviously, the performance of such a complex under either primary or secondary control will deend upon the distribution and degree of continuity of both systems, the relative volumes and permeabilities of the

This paper presents a theory for estimating the rate of gravity drainage of a liquid out of a sand column. Account is taken of the variation in permeability to the liquid as the saturation in the upper part of the sand becomes less than 100 pct. The theory is confirmed by previously published experimental data. Introduction Petroleum engineers have expressed the need for 4 theory of gravity drainage. Brunner,' in particular, has pointed out that some type of mathematical theory is necessary to begin the application of laboratory data to field problems. Muskat and his associates2'3-4 have recently made contributions to the theory of gas-drive behavior and have indicated an intention to apply their methods to water-drive systems. No theory of gravity drainage rates has been developed, however, and it seems desirable to formulate one at this time. Differential Equations of Capillary Flow The flow of liquids in partially saturated porous media has been studied by many investigators.6-10 Richards6 presented derivations of fundamental differential equa- tions governing two-phase capillary flow; and used simplified forms of those equations in solving a steady-state problem. Muskat and Meres6 presented and used equations different from those of Richards. Their equations did not explicitly involve capillary pressure gradients; but included, on the other hand, terms expressing the effects of the evolution of gas from the liquid phase during flow. Leverett8 stated in 1940 that "previous work on the flow of fluid mixtures in porous solids [had] failed adequately to account for all of the three influences that cause motion of the fluids: capillarity, gravity, and impressed external pressure differentials." Leverett's basic equations, however, were specialized forms of the general equations of Richards,5 which had actually taken account of the three influences mentioned by Leverett, but had not been used in a problem involving all three. The fact is that our knowledge of capillary flow and our ability to express this knowledge in differential equations exceed our ability to solve the equations except in a few cases. General differential equations have usually been of little more than formal value. In solving practical problems, it has been necessary to develop specific equations, preserving terms that involved the factors important in those problems, and purposefully neglecting other terms that were not of predominating influence. This is the method followed here. It is believed that the solution of the particular problem and the scheme of the solution itself are new.

In a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the technical cohesion limit is affected by the same four factors that affect the flow stress, namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate.16-28 Moreover, each of these factors affects the technical cohesion limit in the same way that it affects the flow stress,t The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term ilfracture stress' has come into use with the same significance as 'ctechnical cohesion limit," the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the flow of notched and unnotched specimens betqrcen yield and fracture, A study has thus been made of the flow and fracture of metals as affected by the stress system, and of the ductility of metals as affected by the stress system throughout plastic deformation. Since two of the principal stresses were equal (S2 = S3), the stress systems can be represented in terms of the radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse radial stress s3 to the longitudinal stress S1.* The results of the experiments are represented by a series of their flow-stress curves for each Of the metals investigated, and these diagrams have been used for the development Of Other diagrams Of various types. Ludwik was the first to suggest that fracture occurs when the flow stress becomes equal to a technical cohesion limit. Although Ludwik was incorrect in his view that the technical cohesion limit depends only on the amount of plastic deformation and not On the stress system, he was 'Orrect in his view that the flow-stress curve for any stress system terminates at a point representing a technical cohesion limit. The authors have seen some recent references to assertions by other investigators that a point representing the fracture stress need not be on the flow-stress curve. The Ludwik principle, however, "auld Seem to be axiomatic, provided that the flow Stress and fracture stress are properly defined and that the fracture stress is properly determined. Disregard Of this principle has led to some untenable theories Of criteria for fracture. When a metal is very ductile, the conventional method of determining the ductility and fracture stress by dividing the breaking load by the sectional area after fracture, generally gives values that are much too high. During World War II the shortage of ore revived interest in eastern iron deposits, among which -!2..c "Ile Massachusetts and Connecticut limonites. The Cheever mine, in the Richmond-Salisbury area of Massachusetts, was formerly a large producer of limonite ere. The Bureau of Mines investigated the lateral and downward extensions of the Cheever ore body, which was mined from about 1850 to 1892, by ap open cut 1,000 feet long and also by underground workings. even holes aggregating 1,723 feet, were drilled by the Bureau during the winter of 1943-44. They comprised three diamond-core drill holes, two churn-drill holes, and two rotary-drill holes. A geophysical survey of the Cheever mine area and adjoining ground was made in conjunction with the drilling program. Although this survey did not locate the limonite ore beds, the data were of considerable assistance in locating the limestone contact which forms the footwall of the ore beds. Drilling disclosed two beds of limonite with a heavy overburden of glacial till.

MINOR industrial minerals included in this chapter are: the alum minerals, bromine, calcium chloride, epsomite and other natural magnesium salts, iodine, meerschaum, quartz, industrial crystals other than quartz (Iceland spar, tourmaline, fluorite, selenite, mica), and nonfuel gases (air, helium, carbon dioxide). ALUM MINERALS The alums comprise a series of double sulphates (or selenates) isomorphous with potash alum, which, according to a ruling of the Pennsylvania courts, is the only product commercially described simply as "alum." Common alum occurs in nature as kalinite (K2SO4- A12 (SO4) 324H2O). The mineral mendozite (Na2S04) 3.A12 (SO4)3- 24H2O) is soda alum; tschennigite (NH4)2SO4.Al2 (SO4)3.24H2O) is ammonium alum; and there are about a dozen other native alums and related double sulphates. Alunite (alumstone or alum rock) has the formula Al2(SO4) 3.K2S04.4A1 (OH)3 and alunogen, Al2(So4) 3.18H20. Saline residues, found wherever natural water is evaporated, may contain sulphate of alumina, which for most uses is the essential ingredient of alum. Mineral wells and springs that emerge from beds of pyritiferous shale are typically astringent and at times form local deposits of alum, generally as incrustations. Acid waters acting upon aluminous rocks may form sulphates of alumina. The alums of commerce, as well as aluminum sulphate (concentrated alum), are produced principally by treating bauxite with acid, but they have been made also on a substantial scale from clay, cryolite, pyritic slates, schists, lignites, alunite, and leucite. Alum shale-chiefly clay, pyrite, and (usually) carbonaceous matter-was extensively used in England as a source of alum for more than two centuries. In France, pyritic lignites mixed with sand and clay were burned in heaps to red ash, the leach Liquors from which, after treatment with ammonia, yielded alum and copperas. The Portland beryl-mica district, Middlesex County, Conn., comprises three deposits investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1943. The Gotta-Walden deposit is in a pegmatite dike 4 to 20 feet thick, which cuts gneiss and schist. In general, the hanging wall is rich in mica and beryl with some feldspar, quartz, and garnet. The central core is usually high in quartz and feldspar, with relatively little mica and beryl. The footwall comprises quartz and feldspar, with varying amounts of mica and some beryl. The beryl crystals range in color from green to almost golden and have a maximum diameter of inches. Results of surface trenches indicate a beryl content of 0.81 percent for the pegmatite. A small production of beryl, feldspar, and scrap mica has been made from the deposit.

To the Membership of the Institute Gentlemen: The Mineral Industry of Canada in 1948 The preliminary estimate issued by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics and tabulated in the Bulletin of January, 1949, indicated that the value of Canada's mineral production in 1948 reached an all-time high of $808,180,216, showing an increase of 25 per cent over the previous record of $644,696,007 established in the preceding year. The output value of metallics was increased by 22.4 per cent; of fuels, by 43.7 percent of other non-metallics, by 19 per 'cent; and of structural materials, by 16.8 per cent. The value of metals produced in 1948 at $483,770,759, was about $87,000,000 more than in the previous year. There were substantial increases in the tonnages of copper, lead zinc nickel, and other base metals produced, but the rises in market prices for such metals accounted for most of the gains in output values. Production of gold at 3,495,403 ounces valued at $122,339,105 indicated an increase in volume of approximately 500,000 ounces and an increase in value of 14 per cent. Despite the benefits provided under the Emergency Gold Mining Assistance Act 1948 the volume of gold produced in the year was still nearly 2,000,000 ounces less than the record of 5,300,000 ounces established in 1941. The value of mineral fuels produced in 1948, at $158,787,255, was 44 per cent above the 1947 total. Coal production at 18,431,250 tons valued at $107,298,757, while substantially higher than in the preceding year was still half a million tons below the record reached in 1942. Striking developments in the Leduc field in Alberta were responsible for bringing the output of crude petroleum in the year to a new high of 12,098,166 barrels, valued at $36,858,959.

THE use of froth flotation for the separation of minerals has become one of the most important of ore dressing processes. Its particular adaptability to the enrichment of low grade ores has made the process an important factor in the national economy. The methods have been extended to the recovery of a great number of minerals. Among the few minerals which have resisted efforts toward industrial flotation is chrysocolla, a hydrated partly colloidal copper silicate. Chrysocolla, being a product of natural oxidation, has been found to occur in small quantities with many ores which are recovered by flotation methods. In present practice, these small quantities of copper silicate pass off with the tailings and are lost. The advantages to be gained by a satisfactory process for the recovery of chrysocolla is apparent. Any application of principles which points a way toward the satisfactory industrial flotation process for copper silicate would be of advantage. This paper presents an attack on this problem.

Explosion hazards that may exist when air becomes polluted with combustible gases and vapors are extremely dangerous, particularly if the volume of gaseous atmosphere is large, and an explosion under such circumstances could do tremendous damage to persons and property. The hazard is even greater if explosive mixtures are confined under high pressure, as the pressure could increase to tremendous proportions just before the container would rupture. Because of its interest in safety in the mining and allied industries, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated the flammability (explosibility) of various types of combustible atmospheres and published its findings. The explosibility of natural gas has been studied, and the limits of flammability have been determined and published. Other investigations have shown how explosions of natural gas-air mixtures may be prevented by the addition of nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

The process of diffusion alloying of mixed powders offers attractive possibilities both commercially and experimentally. It avoids the fabrication difficulties arising from high alloy contents. Indeed, the process is facilitated by larger alloy additions. The direct formation of the part or test piece and the opportunlity to perform machining operations under more favorable conditions are of no small importance. However, it is necessary to make only brief mention of the interesting features. As yet there have been few attempts to study this process in detail and to carry it to completion, if such is possible. It was intended not only to measure the intermediate and optimum magnetic properties of sintered alloys but to use magnetic testing itself as a means of following the progress of alloying under various condi-tions. Having established that alloys could be successfully synthesized by this tech. nique, the opportunity was taken to study the magnetic properties of several alloys of iron and silicon which had hitherto been too difficult to prepare in suitable test piece form. While avoiding some of the difficulties inherent in the fabrication of alloys by orthodox methods, the diffusion alloying process introduces a few of its own. The first of these is the evaluation of the approach to homogenization. In recent years some notable contributions have been made to this question, but considerable uncertainty remains in its definition and evaluation. This work has concerned itself with further study of this problem and it is hoped that more light has been shed on it. The second of these difficulties arises from the presence of porosity. It is inevitable that in the consolidation of a loose bulk of powder, there should remain some voids unless extremely high pressures are repeatedly applied. It was therefore of importance to investigate their effect on magnetic properties. Recently this effect has been studied and certain predictions made of its behavior. It is believed that the experimental results presented here provide a sound substantiation of the theoretical treatment. The attempt has been made to synthesize five alloys of the iron-silicon system and three each of the iron-nickel and iron-cobalt systems. A series of experiments was also conducted on some of these alloys to test their susceptibility to heat treatment. Some unfortunate experiences have provided opportunity to report data on the deleterious effects of nitrogen on magnetic properties when present as a a in protective atmospheres. Recorded production wan begun in 1815, increasing in size and importance until 1888, when the low price of iron resulting from Minnesota's production of high-grade ore caused most of the operators to close down. Missouri's iron production came from three types of ore: (l) Brown ores, including the deposits of primary and secondary limonites in southeast and southwest Missouri, (2) hematites of the filled sinks, including the ores of Central Ozark district, and (3) specular ores in porphyry, including the deposits of the St. Francois Mountains.

During the past several years, the steel casting industry has made studies of heavy castings in which the test bar has been taken from heavy sections rather than from attached or separately cast coupons. It has been noted that the ductility properties of these heavy sections are often lower than those normally expected. Such lowered ductility is usually accompanied by a spotty test bar fracture, and the ductility values can often be greatly improved if a low-temperature aging treatment is given to the casting. A loss of ductility of this type is considered "abnormal," since it is not accompanied by an increase of tensile strength or hardness, and "temporary" when the ductility can be restored by aging. The cure of such an abnormal condition represents a real improvement in the quality of the steel. Several types of abnormal loss of duetility can be distinguished, of which those caused by excessive amounts of inclusions of undesirable type and those caused by unsuitable grain size and inget structure are well known. The particular type of abnormal lowered ductility currently under consideration may be distinguished by the fact that the low-temperature aging treatment necessary for its relief is insufficient to cause any visible change in the micro-structure as ordinarily observed. As this aging will in fact eventually occur at room temperature, the phenomenon of present interest may be given the symptomatic definition, ''Temporary Abnormal Low Ductility." Some hundreds of previous investigations, largely qualitative in nature, have established, beyond reasonable doubt, that hydrogen is normally present in newly manufactured steel and that this gas, in small amounts, can cause a temporary abnormal loss of ductility. The commonly observed association of high gas content and low ductility has given strong evidence for the presumption that hydrogen, possibly assisted by other gases, is the primary cause of the low ductility observed. Accordingly, The Steel Founders' Society of America has, since Nov. 1, 1944, sponsored investigations at Battelle Memorial Institute whose primary objective is to obtain quantitative information on the relation of the amount of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel, together with associated methods of steelmaking and treatment, to low-duetility effects and porosity. The interest of this investigation thus extends to permanent abnormal losses of ductility, such as are caused by the inclusions which sometimes result from special deoxidizing practices and possibly from metallic nitrides, but as these can he distinguished from the temporary effect of hydrogen, they have been excluded from the work reported here except when they
