The fluorite, deposit discussed herein occurs on a property known as the Snowball and comprises five contiguous mining claims in Maricopa County, Ariz. Attention of the Bureau was first directed to this property early in 1944 through .a request by D. B. Powell, original locator; to investigate his property as a possible source of fluorite and one that might 'Warrant exploration by the Bureau. The property was examined by two Bureau engineers, Thomas C. Denton and Geo. W. Huseman. It was decided to investigate the occurrence further by trenching, sampling, and diamond drilling. Work began on May 15, 194. Preparatory work, trenching and surface sampling, was supervised by Geo. W. Huseman. Drilling was in charge of R. M. Grantham. The project was completed August 8, 1944.

At Fresnillo a series of veins that has yielded very large quantities of silver and other metals has been developed over a length of 6500 ft. and to a depth of over 3000 ft. In the course of this work striking changes in the mineralogy and metal content of the principal veins have been disclosed and are well illustrated by assay data and ore reserve calculations. This paper describes those changes and suggests their bearing on theories of ore deposition. Location The Fresnillo mines and the adjacent city of Fresnillo are in the central part of the state of Zacatecas, 35 miles northwest of the capitol city of Zacatecas, once a great silver-mining center whose total production is said to place it fourth in. the world. Another famous old silver district, Sombre-rete, lies northwest of Fresnillo. Fresnillo is connected by a 5-mile branch with Fresnillo On on the Mexican National Railways line from Juarez to Mexico City. Lying near the southwestern edge of the central plateau of Mexico, Fresnillo is Surrounded by a semi-arid rolling plain from which rise widely scattered low hills. One of these is Proano hill, an inconspicuous elevation rising barely 300 ft. above the plain, but in and around Proano hill are the Fresnillo mines, and it is marked now by a great gash cut by glory-hole mining. According to an account written in 1834 by Francisco Garcia, then Governor of the state of Zacatecas, Fresnillo was discovered in 1554, and a presidio was established there in 1568 to protect travelers on the road between zacatecas and sombreretea Little is known of the earliest mining at Fresnillo, which seemingly began soon after its discovery, but by piecing together various accounts, it appears that mines there were working in 1717 and were notably active in 1751 under an administrator named Murguia, who left detailed notes describing them. In I757, however, the mines became inactive because of dificulties with creditors and no doubt also because of increasing water troubles, and they remained abandoned until 1830. In 1830 the mines at Fresnillo became the property of the State of Zacatecas because the interest of Governor Garcia had been aroused by the long disregarded notes of Murguia. Under Garcia's energetic leadership the mines were reopened, and silver production began in 1832 in spite of serious difliculties, including abnormal rains and an epidemic of cholera. In 1835 English capital was sought to allow installation of steam-driven is pumps at the two principal shafts and to build the great hacienda de beneficio (the present Proano hacienda). The company formed in 1835 (Cia. Zacatecano-Mexicana) operated successfully until 1872, when its career was brought to an end by the political and economic disturbances

Introduction The discovery of artificial radioactivity, that is, of radioactivity of acorns other than those which are naturally radioactive, has increased vastly the possibility of using radioactivity as an analytical cool. The incomparable value of radioactive atoms, which are commonly termed tracers, arises from the extreme sensitivity of this analytical method. To get an idea of this extreme sensitivity it may be useful co recall that gravimetric analytical methods will not permit the weighing of anything much lighter than one-hundredth of a milligram of material. Under the most favourable circumstances, this represents an uncertainty in the answer of 1016 acorns, or 10,000,000,000,000,000 acorns. Accurate spectrographic methods possibly have a sensitivity 10,000 times greater than this, but the uncertainty is still of the order of 1012 atoms. The tracer permits ascertainment of decay of a single atom so that its sensitivity, without half trying, can be several orders of magnitude greater than that of any other method available co chemists. In addition co the sensitivity of tracers to which reference has just been made, tracers have another property which makes them unique. A radioactive atom is almost exactly like the corresponding non-radioactive acorn m regard to its electronic structure, and therefore in regard to its chemical properties. The nucleus is different, but the nucleus does not participate in chemical reactions. Therefore, a tracer acorn behaves like an ordinary atom until such time as its nucleus undergoes a catastrophic decay. This unique property permits one to use tracer acorns as atomic spies and therefore to follow the behaviour of acorns of a certain kind among their own kind. In other words, the tracer method permits us to study and measure what we call self-diffusion. All of the uses of tracers that have been made depend on the two properties co which reference has been made.

During July 1941, a study was initiated at the Boulder City Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines on proposed methods for the production of magnesium metal. The major emphasis was placed upon development of a process that required minimum reliance upon the sale or utilization of by-products to meet economic competition from processes already in operation. It was felt that only through the development of such a process could the nation's vast resources of dolomite and low-grade magnesite that are contiguous to large blocks of firm power be properly utilized. During the course of exploratory tests on electrolytic and electrothermic processes, it was noted that fused magnesium chloride would dissolve appreciable quantities of magnesium oxide in the presence of small amounts of boric oxide. The use of such a solution in an electrolytic cell employing a graphite anode and a steel cathode caused the deposition of magnesium at the cathode and the evolution of carbon oxides at the anode with minimal amounts of chlorine The original results were sufficiently encouraging to justify further investigation on an enlarged scale, since the process seemed to present advantages over other proposed processes.1,2 for the direct use of magnesium oxide in a fused chloride electrolyte. When work oil a larger scale was initiated it was found that the addition of boric oxide to the electrolyte resulted in dispersion of metal and constantly decreasing current efficiency. However, by this time solubility studies had shown that magnesium oxide was sufficiently soluble in magnesium chloride melts containing no boric oxide to effect the same anode reactions, and development work was continued. Over two years of development work have been carried out, and considerable work remains to be done. It is desired to emphasize the fact that many of the difficulties met require a long period of continuous operation before they become serious enough to affect operation of the cell. The copper concentrator of the Braden Copper Co. is at Sewell, Chile, on the westem flank of the main Cordillera of the Andes, at an air distance of approximately 50 miles southeast of Santiago, the capital of Chile. The region is mountainous and space is at a premium because of the rough terrain and the danger of snowslides. The ore, a porphyry copper, is mined by a block-caving method in the El Teniente mine. It is hauled to the crushing plant, a distance of 2.6 miles, through a tunnel because of the severe climatic conditions. The usual large, coarsely set, primary reduction machines found in many ore-treating plants are not required because of the mining method employed and the limiting 12-in. spacing of the grizzlies at the head of each ore pass in the mine. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the numerous improvements made in the crushing section of this large flotation concentrator during the past I5 years to increase the efficiency of the plant and to raise the daily output from around 20,000 to 30,000 tons. The reader should keep in mind that all changes were made within the existing building because of the limited space and the high cost of the heavy mill construction required to withstand the snow loads. The present plant, as well as the former, operates on a 24-hr, 7 days a week basis. The crushing plant commenced operations at its present site in 1921, the main equipment being No. 7½ gyratories, followed by 48-in. horizontal Symons disk crushers. Fines were removed by I-in. stationary grizzlies ahead of each unit. In 1924 a third stage of crushing was provided by the addition of 55½-in. rolls in open circuit. During 1925, the Symons disks were replaced by 73½-in. rolls. All the rolls were changed to closed circuit, with elevators and screens to give a final product of 9 pct plus 3-mesh. The flowsheet of a typical crushing section of this period is shown in Fig I. The ore was withdrawn from a common bill serving the five crushing sections in the plant by means of any number up to six 36-in. wide-apron feeders, which discharged onto a common conveyor belt. This conveyor was equipped with a magnetic head pulley and the crusher attendant was stationed near the discharge end to pick out pieces of mine timber that might be in the ore. The ore was discharged over a 13/4-in. spaced bar grizzly and the oversize of this grizzly was crushed by a No. 7½ McCully gyratory crusher set at 13/4-in. opening on the closed side. The grizzly undersize joined the gyratory discharge and was conveyed to a set of 73½ by 20-in. Garfield rolls set at I in. These rolls operated in closed circuit with a bucket elevator and two vibrating screens placed in parallel.

THE Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite of Ordovician age, is composed of 538 ft of dolomitc and limestone. Numerous bands, layers and nodules of chert, arenaceous and shale zones are present. The characteristics displayed by these features have been useful in mapping, prospecting and mining. Perhaps a better understanding of the origin of these zones will increase their usefulness. Introduction The presence of numerous bands, nodules, and irregular bodies of chert within the Kingsport formation in the Mascot locality has long been recognized. Oder and Miller1 mention the general characteristics, but do not deal with the chert occurrences in detail. When the occurrence of chert is studied in fresh exposures underground, a variety of characteristics is noted which has been useful in correlation and in detailing the sub-surface stratigraphy. Although the writer has no desire to enter into a controversy over the origin of chert, many observations have been made of its local characterigtics. A detailed stratigraphic section is included which shows the position of the individual horizons discussed in the following paragraphs. The term "chertification" has been adopted from Fowler and Lyden2 for use here. It refers to the replacement of lime- stone by introduced silicic acid. The writer uses it to refer to the occurrencc of introduced or original chert in limestone and dolomite. In this writing "syngenetic chert" refers to chert which has been deposited contemporaneously with the enclosing limestone or dolomite. Also, it is considered to include interstitial silica shown by chemical analysis and insoluble residues. The term "epigenetic" is applied to all chert which has been introduced after consolidation of the rocks in which it occurs, regardless of the nature of the depositing solutions. Syngenetic Chert It is the belief of the author that a large percentage of the chert found in the Kingsport formation is syngenetic. The widespread occurrence of similar nodules and bands of chert in the same horizon far from one another and far from areas of deformation or alteration of the enclosing rocks is difficult to explain by infiltration of the silica after compaction of the enclosing rocks. When chert of this type does occur near zones of movement it is likely to be involved in faulting and brecciation which indicates that it was deposited prior to deformation. Older Epigenetic Chert There are several occurrences of nodules in the Kingsport which seem to be epigenetic as pointed out in the following examples: A cherty zone occurs 26 ft above the o bed (Fig =). The volumetric behavior of five mixtures of black oil and natural gas and of two mixtures of condensate and natural gas from a field in the San Joaquin Valley was experimentally established. This work was carried out at roo°, I9o° and 250°F in the pressure interval between 400 and 5000 psi. The viscosity of the liquid phase of four mixtures of black oil and natural gas was experimentally measured in the above-indicated temperature and pressure intervals. The effect of methane upon the precipitation of bitumen from the black oil was studied at 230°F. Introduction The solution of a number of the economical and technological problems which arise in connection with petroleum production is dependent upon the availability of the necessary quantitative information covering the materials involved. This requires data concerning physical properties of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures at the pressures and temperatures characteristic of underground petroleum reservoirs. The experimental determination of the desired data for each situation encountered is relatively time-consuming. However, it is considered to yield results sufficiently more reliable than those obtained from correlations to justify the effort. For these reasons there was undertaken a laboratory investigation of the viscosity of the liquid phase and the volu- metric and phase behavior of mixtures of oil and gas samples obtained from wells in a field located in the San Joaquin Valley. Terminology The nomenclature of petroleum engineering is not at present entirely standardized. Many commonly used technical terms are not everywhere given the same meanings. For the purposes of this paper the following definitions will be adopted: Black oil refers to the dark-colored, hydrocarbon liquid obtained when the producing horizon of the well lies partly in the condensed hydrocarbon phase of the reservoir. Condensate is the term applied to the relatively volatile, pale yellow or amber-colored hydrocarbon liquid that is often obtained from the surface separator system when the producing horizon of the well lies in the gas cap of the reservoir. The gas obtained from the surface separator system is called natural gas regardless of whether the well is producing black oil or condensate. As might be expected from the multi-component character of naturally occurring hydrocarbon materials, the compositions of black oil, condensate and natural gas are subject to considerable variation depending upon the temperatures and pressures prevailing in the surface separator system as well as upon the overall composition of the material produced from the reservoir. An apparatus is described whereby capillary pressure curves for porous media may be determined by a technique that involves forcing mercury under pressure into the evacuated pores of solids. The data so obtained are compared with capillary pressure curves determined by the porous diaphragm method, and the advantages of the mercury injection method are stated. Based upon a simplified working hypothesis, an equation is derived to show the relationship of the permeability of a porous medium to its porosity and capillary pressure curve, and experimental data are presented to support its validity. A procedure is outlined whereby an estimate of the permeability of drill cuttings may be made with sufficient acuracy to meet most engineering requirements. INTRODUCTION The nature of capillary pressures and the role they play in reservoir behavior have been lucidly discussed by Lev-rett', Hassler, Brunner, and Deah12, and others. As a result of these publications the value of determining capillary pressure curves for cores has come to be generally recognized within the oil industry. While considerable attention has been directed toward the subject in an effort to provide a reliable method of estimating percentages of connate water, it has been recognized that capillary pressure data may prove of value in other equally important applications. This paper describes a method and procedure for determining capillary pressure curves for porous media wherein mercury is forced under pressure into the evacuated pores of the solids. The pressure-volume relationships ob- tained are reasonably similar to capillary pressure curves determined by the generally accepted porous diaphragm method. The advantages of the method lie in the rapidity with which the experimental data can be obtained and in the fact that small, irregularly shaped samples, e.g., drill cuttings, can be handled in the same manner as larger pieces of regular shape such as cores or permeability plugs. Based upon a simplified working hypothesis, a theoretical equation will be derived which relates the capillary pressure curve to the porosity and permeability of a porous solid, and experimental data will be presented to support its validity. This relationship aplied to capillary pressure data obtained for drill cuttings by the procedure described provides a means for predicting the permeability of drill cuttings. METHODS FOR DETERMINING CAPILLARY PRESSURES Several techniques have so far been employed in determining capillary pressure curves and these fall into two principal categories: (1) Liquid is removed from, or imbibed by, the core through the medium of a high displacement pressure porous diaphragm (2) Liquid is removed from the core which is subjected to high centrifugal forces in a centrifuge4,'. There are? however, certain limitations inherent in both methods. The greatest capillary pressure which can be observed by method (I), above, is determined by the maximum displacement pressure procurable in a permeable diaphragm which at the present time appears to be less than 100 psi. An even more serious limitation of the diaphragm method is imposed hy the fact that several days may be required to reach saturation equilibrium at a given pressure; hence, the time re- quired to obtain a well-defined curve may be measured in terms of weeks. Furthermore, to date, no suitable technique for handling relatively small, irregularly shaped pieces of rock, such as drill cuttings, has been reported and, therefore, measurements must be made, in general, on cores, or portions thereof. The centrifuge method offers the distinct advantage over the porous diaphragm method of arriving at saturation equilibrium in a relatively short time by virtue of the elimination of the transfer medium for the liquid. The calculation of capillary pressures from centrifuge speeds is somewhat tediousa, however, and the equipment required is fairly elaborate. While there exists the possibility that this method might be adaptable to the determination of the capillary pressures of cuttings, this particular ramification has not been investigated, as far as is known. In view of the limitations of the two principal methods for determining capillary pressures, the apparatus described in the following sections has been devised in order that difficulties previously encountered might be circumvented. MERCURY INJECTION METHOD FOR DETERMINING CAPILLARY PRESSURES Theory The methods described above for determining capillary pressures are characterized by the fact that one of the fluids present within the pore spaces of the solid is a liquid which "wets" the solid, i.e., the contact angle which the liquid forms against the solid is less than 90" as measured through that phase. For these "wetting" liquids the action of surface forces is such that the fluid spontaneously fills the voids within the solid. These forces likewise oppose the withdrawal of the fluid from the pores of the solid.

"ZINC-LEAD REPLACEMENT deposits straddle the steep-sided valley of Kicking Horse River at a point three miles east of Field, B.c., in Yoho National Park. The Monarch orebodies extend into Mt. Stephen on the south side of the valley, and outcrop at two points, 1,000 and 1,200 feet above the valley floor. The Kicking Horse deposits are in Mt. Field, on the north side of the valley, and they outcrop 200 feet lower.The East Monarch outcrop is said to have been discovered in 1884 during construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The larger West Monarch outcrop, 700 feet west of the original discovery, was not reached till 1917 because of its nearly inaccessible location on the cliff face.The Kicking Horse mine was staked in 1906. Little development was done for several decades, and mining was not commenced till 1935.At the East Monarch, mining was commenced soon after location, and several thousand tons of ore were shipped prior to 1912. At this time a gravity concentrator was installed. This was operated till 1924, and a total of 42,000 tons of ore were mined, including about 10,000 tons from the West Monarch. The period from 1928 to 1935 featured flotation milling and the mining of 265,000 tons of ore, mostly from the West Monarch orebody. Intensive exploratory development was carried out in both Monarch and Kicking Horse from 1935 to 1946. Production from both mines in this period totalled 380,000 tons. From 1947 to the time of closure in 1952, considerable new ore was found in both mines and 185,000 tons were milled. Immediate possibilities for finding ore in the Monarch were considered exhausted. Kicking Horse orebodies are known to persist with a low grade of zinc. Total production from the two mines amounts to 842,500 tons grading approximately 7 per cent lead, 10 per cent zinc, and 1.2 ounces per ton silver."

Among the more recent developments for breaking coal in mines is the Airdox system, in which high-pressure compressed air is conducted to the points of application by means of heavy-duty steel and copper tubing. Stray electric currents can be detected on y of the compressed-air lines, and evidence of such currents is rev led, by arcs and sparks when contact is made between the tubing and mine track or other equipment forming a current path with the track. Explosive gas is liberated in many coal mines; therefore, from the standpoint of safety, it is desirable to eliminate all possible sources of gas ignition, including stray electric currents. The purpose of this report is to reveal the source, magnitude, and possible methods of controlling stray currents in compressed-air lines that are used in connection with Airdox systems. Stray electric currents have been studied in most coal-mining localities in the United. States where Airdox equipment is used. The information given in this report is based on the find of these studies.

"The Canam property is in southern British Columbia, 24 miles southeast of Hope. It is reached by 5 miles of road from Mile 26 on the Hope-Princeton Highway.Between the years 1930, when the property was discovered, and I 938 development work by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited included some open-cuts and six adits totalling 2,700 feet in length. Canam Copper Company Ltd. explored the property intermittently from 1947 to 1955 by diamond drilling and underground work, including driving No. 10 adit. From surface down to the level of No. 10 adit, about 1,250,000 tons of ore has been outlined with an approximate grade of 1.25 per cent copper, 0.8 ounce silver per ton, and 0.01 ounce gold per ton. The ore in the upper part of the deposit also contains a little molybdenum and a little uranium.In June, 1955 Canam Copper Company Ltd. made arrangements to have the property brought into production under the direction of Mogul Mining Corporation Ltd. of Toronto, and a new low level adit has been started.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe principal rocks on the Canam property are chert, cherty argillite, and argillite. They are considered to be Jurassic or Lower Cretaceous in age. Although massive bands to 150 feet in thickness occur, these rocks are in general thinly bedded. Conformable bands of pyrrhotite, a fraction of an inch in thickness, are not uncommon in the well-bedded rocks, and fine tourmaline can be observed in various places.The sediments strike slightly west of north and dip quite steeply, generally eastward; however, sharp divergences from this general attitude are fairly common.Dark grey dioritic sills, in which slender prismatic crystals are conspicuous, are fairly common in the sediments. In general the sills are less than 25 feet in thickness, but a few are as much as 100 feet thick. Under the microscope the sills are seen to consist largely of amphibole (pargasite) and plagioclase (near An50)."

THE reduction of tungstic oxide to tungsten metal powder by hydrogen is a process by which one might expect the resultant metal powder to he porous. In- deed, sponge iron, prepared by rcduction of the oxide in a reducing gas, is generally accepted as quite porous. with pores large enough to be seen readily under the optical microscope at relatively low magnifications. However, any pores that may exist in tungsten metal powder are not resolved by the optical microscope, and apparently, not even by the electron microscope. Fig r shows commercial tungsten powder magni- fied at I0,000 X by the electron microscope,' both etched and unetched. In an earlier paper by one of the authors,* the existence of ports in tungsten powder was required to explain adequately the particle size changes occurring during the reduction of tungstic oxide. The inability to detect these pores under the electron microscope at 10,000 X implies that these {pores} are of a size of 100 A units or less. (This in itself is by no means proof that pores above 100 A would not exist, since polishing effects on the specimen might smear up holes of such small magnitude). If, then, these pores are less than IOO A. and of the order of molecular size, then the density of the metal powder should be

Several disastrous and a great number of near-disastrous mine fires have been started by igniting the combustible conductor insulation and outer covering of trailing cables. Those who have had experience in fighting such fires know that they are extremely difficult to combat and extinguish owing to the irritating and noxious gases, fumes and vapors evolved from evaporation, distillation and combustion of the sundry compounds used in the construction of cables. When electric-motor-driven coal-cutting machines were first introduced in coal mines, the electricity was transmitted to the apparatus by two single-conductor trailing cables. Later, two-conductor parallel and concentric types were developed. These early cables were made with the materials available at that time with relatively little thought given to using new materials or utilizing the old to the best advantage. The copper conductors were stranded to give flexibility, but there were too few strands and the method of laying them was such that they did not endure well the stresses of twisting and pulling, to which trailing cables used in mines are usually subjected. The rubber insulating compounds used were not satisfactory in resisting water, high temperature, and the crushing stresses encountered in mine service. The outer coverings were cotton or jute braids saturated with tars or asphalts having relatively no abrasive resistance. In fact, the only consideration given to trailing cable design because of its extremely short life, was to construct it at the lowest possible cost. With increased electrification and mechanization, more serious problems were encountered. Cables used in mines were exposed to more severe conditions than in any other industry. The excessive overload currents, poor heat dissipation, severe abrasion, crushing loads from falling material, runovers, and any of the other things that tend to destroy cable, called for vast improvement in trailing cable design for mine use. About 1918, one manufacturer who recognized the need for improving the toughness of cables in order to obtain greater safety and longer life, developed a special rope-stranded conductor, a superior rubber insulation compound and a tough rubber sheath or jacket compound. As a result of this type of construction, broken conductor strands were practically eliminated, the insulating material withstood high temperature without undue disintegration, and the jacket, similar to that used for automobile tire tread, had high abrasion resistance, high tear resistance, and was waterproof. While the initial cost of these cables was higher than the jute-filled braided types, this disadvantage was more than offset by increased safety and longer service. Cables with these improved characteristics were first installed in mines in 1920. Since 1930, the use of braided trailing cables in coal mines has been almost completely supplanted by the more superior types, employing high-grade rubber compounds for insulation and sheath. Manganese-oxide minerals occur in irregular pockets distributed through the residual clays of the Cartersville district, which lies 45 miles north-west of Atlanta in Bartow County, Ga. The district produces, or has produced, limonite, barite, specular hematite, ochre, ferruginous manganese, manganiferous iron are, as well as manganese. Bureau of Mines engineers have visited the district on three occasions - in December 1939, February 1941, and October 1942. During the visit of February 1941, 80 tons of samples of manganese-bearing clays were taken from seven properties for ore-dressing tests, which were conducted at the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Rolla, Mo. The. October 1942 visit was for the purpose of reappraising the district in the light of knowledge gained from the ore-dressing studies and to prepare a plan for the district's development. Exploratory drilling was begun in March l943 and was continued until June 1945. Nine properties were explored that, roughly follow a line beginning near Cartersville and extend to a point 2 miles northeast of the village of White. The work consisted of bulldozer trenching, rotary bucket churn drilling, sampling, and analytical determinations. The manganese district is 18 miles long with a maximum width of 7 miles at Cartersville, which lies at the center of the district. The work of the Bureau was confined to the northern half of the district between Cartersville and Pine Log. The properties explored comprise but a small portion of the Potential producing area.

As a part of the Bureau of Mines' intensive; 'investigation of domestic manganese deposits, ore-dressing studies were conducted on three samples of oxide and silicate manganese ores from various Wyoming properties. The samples wore as follows: 1. A 2-ton sample of ore was obtained by a Bureau engineer during examination of the Caulkins-McGuckin property in the center of Crook County, 10 miles north of Sundance, Wyo. The ore body was described as a vein deposit in rhyolite porphyry. 2. The J. B. C. Mining Co. submitted a 1-ton sample of oxide manganese ore from a property located 44 miles northeast of Rock River in Albany County, Wyoming. 3. A 1-ton sample of oxide-silicate-ore was obtained by a Bureau examining engineer from the Gheen property in the northeast corner of Washakie County, Wyo. The ore body was described as a replacement deposit in a country rock of silicified limestone. As the samples differed widely in physical and chemical characteristics and also in their response to methods of concentration, ore from each property was considered a separate ore-dressing problem.

Diesel locomotives for underground haulage have been used in coal mines in Continental Europe for twenty-five years or more. In Great Britain, it was not until 1935 that permission was granted to use them in gassy coal mines, but since that time they have been employed in increasing numbers both in gassy and non-gassy coal mines and in metal mines. Their use underground in coal mines in the United States is still prohibited and the same was the case in Canada until 1946, when permission was granted to operate a Diesel underground in the Adanac mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, at Bellevue, Alberta. The locomotive used here is a 50 h.p. Hunslet Mark II. More recently, a 100 h.p. Diesel was placed in operation for underground haulage at No. 18 Colliery of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, in the Sydney coalfield, N. S. Thus, on this continent, Canada has been a pioneer in the use of these locomotives underground in coal mines and there is no doubt that more and more of them will be employed as time goes on. We feel, therefore, that the following notes concerning their design and performance, which we have received from the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, will be of interest to our members.

SECONDARY fertilizer minerals include borax, gypsum and sulphur and such compounds as the sulphates of copper, magnesium, manganese and zinc; also the carbonate and oxide of magnesium. Potash, phosphates and nitrogen are generally considered to be primary fertilizer materials. The growing plant, under the average conditions of growth, is able to get from the soil the mineral elements required for the completion of its life cycle. The elements taken up are numerous and the vital functions of some of them yet remain to be determined. However, in the commercial growing of the plant (farming) something much more than the mere completion of a life cycle is required. There the maxi- mum possible growth of plant or yield of seed or fruit are the objective and for that objective the average soil is deficient in some elements, and additions from artificial sources are desirable. Commercial fertilizers (15,000,000 tons in 1946) are designed to supply those deficiencies. Long experience has taught that nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the elements most apt to be required and in a greater degree, and to supply them is the-basic function of the fertilizer industry. Thus nitrogen, phosphate, and potash are designated as the major plant-food materials. But other mineral crop nutrients may likewise be deficient in varying degrees as determined by diagnostic techniques, soil tests, plant analysis and foliar symptoms,3 calling for their addition from artificial sources if maximum crop yields are to be obtained. Because used in lesser amounts and frequently in relatively minute amounts as compared with the major three, they are designated either as "minor elements," or, if used in larger amounts, as "secondary elements." Thus, included under the two designations, in alphabetical order, are: borax; copper sulphate; magnesium carbonate, oxide and sulphate; manganese sulphate, and zinc sulphate. Obviously, the sulphates of the metals copper, manganese, and zinc cannot be considered as "industrial rocks," but they are given brief mention for whatever interest may pertain there to.

This treatment may be accomplished by wrapping the single crystal tightly in very thin, dead soft, brass foil and annealing in the presence of air for 20 hr at 800°C. Since the wrapping encircles the sptcimen three to four times, only a very slight amount of oxidation occurs on the specimen surface. On unwrapping one of these cylindrical single crystals. in. in diam by ro in. long (72.75 pct cu, 27.23 pct Zn, 0.01 pct P11, 0.01 pct re), mall light-gray depnrrits in the form of circular arcs werenoted on the part nf the foil which had been in contact with the single crystal, Fig r. (By superim- approximatetl). These deposits, which, from their color, suggest the appearance of sublimated zinc, were found to coincide roughly with a set of octahedral planes nearly perpendicular to the rod axis. The pattern shorn in the figure held no relation to the profle of the sample since the markin~s on the crystal More annealing werc attributed to traces of cube planes. It seems very likely that the deposits were formed by sutllimation of zinc diffusing from octahrdral planes since diffusian would Eogically take place along planes of maximum atomic spacing. However, it is difficult to understand why a continuous sublimation of zinc should occur from a single crystat in contact with a wrapping roil OF the same composition, and why diffusion would take place along specific octahedral planes and in a regular pattern.

The Boston Consolidated mine is situated in the Bingham mining district, Salt Lake County; Utah (fig. 1). The property has had a noteworthy production of cupriferous, gold-bearing, pyritic ore in addition to lead ore. The Bureau of Mines established a diamond-drilling development project on the property in September 1943 with the primary objective of determining the continuity of a mineralized zone in the Commercial limestone below and to the northeast of the 800-foot level (fig.2). Examination of the geologic feature at the property previous to drilling indicated that the mineralized limestone horizon would continue belay the 800-foot level, but with a flatter dip than disclosed above this level. During the project period, 36 holes totaling 4,001 feet were drilled from underground stations outlining the zone below the 800-foot level (figs. 2 and 3).

A study of the behavior of retrograde condensation from gas mixtures was made in the presence and absence of sand in order to determine if the condensed liquid would re-vaporize in the Presence of sand. Methane-butane and methane-pentane mixtures that would form liquids by retrograde condensation when produced from a constant volume cell were used. The methane-butane mixtures of similar composition were produced by three different methods. The first two were charged into an empty cell and were produced in one case within a period of 9 hr and in the other within a period of 3 days. The third mixture was charged to a sand-packed cell and produced within a period of 9 hr. The curves relating composition of the produced gas to pressure obtained from these experiments show that equilibrium was maintained as long as liquid was condensing. However, during the portion of the pressure decline where the condensed liquid should be revaporizing, equilibrium was maintained only when the mixture was produced from the sand-packed cell. The methane-pentane mixture is produced only in the presence of sand. The data obtained for this system also show that equilibrium is maintained at all times during the pressure decline. These results indicate that revaporization is aided rather than prevented by the fact that the condensate "wets the sand." The significance to the petroleum industry of the behavior of hydrocarbons in the retrograde region is becoming increasingly important because a large percentage of reservoirs being discovered today arc of the gas-condensate type. The important characteristic of a gas-condensate reservoir is the retrograde condensation of a liquid phase throughout the reservoir if the pressure is allowed to decline. In order to prevent the loss of this retrograde liquid in some of these reservoirs, they are "cycled"; that is, the material produced from the reservoir is processed to remove the heavier hydrocarbons and the light fractions are returned to the reservoir to maintain the reservoir pressure. Another method of producing these reservoirs is Pressure depletion. There are other methods but they are not in general use. Although a large number of factors are involved in determining the optimum method of producing a reservoir, only the problem of whether the retrograde condensate resulting from pressure depletion will revaporize from sand at equilibrium conditions is considered in this paper. Also the data are limited to the methane-n-butane and the methane-n-pentane systerns at loo°F and one type of sand. Three types of tests were run in order to compare the revaporization of retrograde liquid formed in a cell with that formed in a sand-packed cell, and to establish the effect of time. The results of tests presented in this paper indicate that both time and the presence of sand promote the revaporization of
